2014 NCAA Tournament Information TOURNAMENT FIELD: The 2014 NCAA Volleyball Tournament field will consist of 64 teams in four regions. It’s the 17th season for the 64-team format after expanding from 56 teams in 1998. There will be 32 automatic bids and 32 at-large invitations to the single-elimination event, and the bracket will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 30. FIRST AND SECOND ROUNDS: First and second round matches will be held Thursday-Friday (Dec. 4-5) or Friday-Saturday (Dec. 5-6) at 16 campus sites. The 16 sub-regional winners will advance to one of the four regional sites. REGIONALS: Four regional championships of four teams each will be played Friday-Saturday (Dec. 12-13). For the eighth season each regional championship will be held at a predetermined site. The 2014 regional sites are Seattle, Wash., Ames, Iowa, Louisville, Ky., and Minneapolis, Minn.

Bears Volleyball

FINAL FOUR: Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla., is the host site for the NCAA Division I championship. The national semifinals are slated for Thursday, Dec. 18, with the title match on Saturday, Dec. 20. A year ago, Penn State beat Washington in the semifinals and Wisconsin in the finals to claim the national title. MISSOURI STATE IN THE NCAA: The Bears have appeared in the NCAA Tournament 10 times. The Bears earned an at-large berth in 1982 and lost in four games at Texas in the first round. In 1990, Missouri State won the Gateway automatic bid and fell in three games at Hawaii. In 1993, the Bears collected the MVC automatic berth and lost in three games to Illinois. In 2003, the Bears returned to the Tournament but lost in four to Arkansas at Manhattan, Kan. In 2005, the Bears won the MVC Tournament to clinch the automatic berth, falling at Missouri in the first round. In 2006, the Bears broke through with the program’s first NCAA win, defeating Arkansas 3-1 in the first round before falling 3-0 to Oklahoma. MSU made it three in a row in 2007, losing to Oregon in the first round as one of a record four MVC teams included in the field. In 2008, Missouri State fell to UAB in the first round, while the Bears fell to another Alabama school, Auburn, in 2010 as the MVC matched its 2007 record of four bids. The Bears fell to 15th-seeded Pepperdine in the 2011 first round. The current MVC membership has an 21-46 mark in NCAA volleyball competition after Missouri State, UNI and Wichita State qualified last year.
