PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico -- Missouri State got double-doubles from seniors Christiana Shorter and Whitney Edie to pace an 83-75 win over Central Florida in the consolation round of the Hardwood Tournament of Hope Wednesday (Nov. 21). Shorter tallied 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Edie also snagged 10 boards and tallied 16 points in the winning effort. Kenzie Williams added 13 points for the Lady Bears, while Hannah Wilkerson contributed 12. The victory looked like a sure thing in the early going as Shorter scored 18 in the irst half to lead MSU to a 39-22 advantage at the break. A put-back by Williams just four-and-a-half minutes into the second half extended the Lady Bears’ lead to 50-28, the team’s largest of the night. With less than 12 minutes left in the game, Williams knocked down a 3-pointer and then scored a quick layup 35 seconds later to put Nyla Milleson’s squad ahead 61-41 at the 11:04 mark, but the Knights seemed to ind a spark in the inal 10 minutes. Sara Djassi hit a pair of free throws and a jumper, while Erike Jones knocked down a short jumper to spark a 6-0 UCF run and cut the Missouri State advantage to 14. Later, a trey by Jackson ended the Knights’ 9-2 run and made it a 63-50 game with 9:52 remaining. The Lady Bears would eventually push their lead back to 17 as Edie scored ive points in a stretch of two minutes. Tyonna Snow’s charity shot at the 7:43 mark helped MSU lead 69-52 with order seemingly restored for the moment. But Missouri State went nearly ive minutes without a ield goal while UCF chewed away at the de icit. Jackson scored nine straight points for the Knights, including a pair of 3-pointers that made it a seven-point game with 4:49 left. Later, Gevenia Carter knocked down a trey with just over three minutes on the clock that pulled the Conference USA squad within 75-69. But the Lady Bears were game, and turned to veterans Shorter and Karly Buer down the stretch for key buckets. A put-back by Shorter gave MSU some breathing room at 77-69, and then an 18-footer by Buer at the 2:09 mark extended the Lady Bears’ advantage to double igures again, 79-69. A pair of Bry Snow free throws with 73 ticks to go put MSU on top by 11 before a traditional three-point play by Jackson in the inal seconds provided the inal eight-point margin of victory. The effort by Shorter was her 22nd career double-double and ninth 20-point scoring performance. She was 12-for-20 from the ield and helped MSU ire at a 53.8-percent (35-for-65) clip for the game. MSU was just 1-for-8 (.125) from bonus distance and 12-for-20 (.600) from the line. However, the Lady Bears overcame 27 turnovers with a commanding 53-43 rebounding advantage while blocking six shots. UCF was 26-for-81 (.321) overall from the ield after iring at a 15.8-percent clip in the irst half. The Knights knocked down seven 3-pointers (7-for-20) and were 16-for-26 (.615) at the charity stripe. Carter added 14 points as the only other UCF player to score in double igures, while Jones joined Edie and Shorter with a game-high 10 rebounds, including eight offensive boards.

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico -- Missouri State played an even second half with undefeated Gonzaga Tuesday night, but a 16-0 run by the Bulldogs midway through the game was the difference in an 80-66 setback in the opening round of the Hardwood Tournament of Hope. Keani Albanez scored a game-high 19 points for Gonzaga (5-0), which knocked down nine 3-pointers and shot 46.8 percent (29for-62) from the ield. Missouri State (1-2) was led by Whitney Edie with 16 points on a 7-for-13 shooting performance, while Christiana Shorter scored 12, and Karly Buer tallied 11 points. The Lady Bears committed 20 turnovers and overcame a slow start with a 50-percent shooting effort in the second half. A Hannah Wilkerson coast-to-coast layup with four-and-a-half minutes left in the irst half tied the game, 27-27 and ended a 6-2 Lady Bears’ run at the time. But Gonzaga responded with a 14-0 outburst before the half to lead 41-27 at the break, and then extended its advantage to 16 points with the irst bucket of the second stanza. Midway through the half, the Bulldogs extended their advantage to 21 points on a turn-around jumper by Stephanie Golden that made it a 62-41 game with 10:41 to go. But the Lady Bears never surrendered and trimmed their de icit to 10 on a Shorter layup at the 6:57 mark as part of an 18-point surge over the next four minutes. But Gonzaga had too much irepower down the stretch and scored eight of the game’s next 10 points to put it out of reach. The Lady Bears inished 26-for-58 (.448) from the ield, 4-for-12 (.333) from bonus distance and 10-for-17 from the line (.588). MSU owned a 36-35 rebounding edge and snagged 10 steals, including four by Kenzie Williams.

LADY BEARS

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Missouri State outscored Arkansas-Little Rock by 10 points in the second half Thursday to earn a 78-68 victory over the Trojans in non-conference women’s basketball play at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock. The Lady Bears ripped off runs of 7-0 and 10-0 after the game was tied at 49-49 early in the second period to distance themselves from the home team and placed four scorers in double igures as both teams moved to 1-1 on the season. Kenzie Williams (20), Bry Snow (15) and Hannah Wilkerson (13) all produced career-high scoring efforts and Whitney Edie notched her irst career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Missouri State got off to a slow start with ive turnovers on its irst eight possessions, but still took a 9-7 lead on the ninth possession thanks to a Williams 3-pointer. In fact, the Lady Bears did not miss a shot of any kind for nearly six minutes to start the game, going 3-for-3 from the ield and 6-for-6 from the free throw line for a 13-11 advantage before inally missing at the 14:12 mark. The Trojans came back and took a four-point lead before the Lady Bears answered with an 8-0 run on four layups for a 23-19 lead with 8:51 left in the period. That advantage would be the largest for either club until halftime as four ties and nine lead changes followed on the way to a 42-42 deadlock at the break. Missouri State used a three-point play from Edie and a Bry Snow layup to lead 47-44 with 18:48 to go in the game, then fended off a pair of UALR tying scores with a 7-0 run by Williams and Wilkerson to lead 56-49 at the 14:38 mark. UALR scored two quick buckets to cut the gap to three points when the Lady Bears asserted themselves again, this time with a 10-0 run to lead 66-53 with just under 11 minutes to play. Missouri State pushed the lead to as many as 17 at 74-57 before UALR’s Janette Merriex nailed three consecutive 3-pointers as part of an 11-0 run that inally ended when Edie hit a pair of free throws for a 76-68 score with 2:46 on the clock. The Lady Bears kept the home team from scoring again to account for the inal margin. Missouri State shot 42.9-percent (27-63) from the loor and held a 13-point margin at the foul line, shooting 22-for-27 compared to 9-for-14 for UALR.
