2012-13 Women’s Basketball Guide

yla Milleson enters her sixth season as the head Lady Bear after returning Missouri State back to the top of the Missouri Valley Conference in year five. Milleson, who enters the 2012-13 season 276-106 (.723) overall as a collegiate head coach, is 91-70 (.565) at MSU to rank second all-time among Lady Bear mentors for total victories through five seasons. Milleson’s Lady Bears will have a new look entering the 2012-13 season, with the five seniors who were so instrumental in the program’s return to prominence being replaced by an exciting seven-player freshman class with loads of potential. Even with the loss of those seniors, MSU still returns four players who made at least 12 starts in 2011-12, including two-time all-MVC performer Christiana Shorter and junior guard Karly Buer, whose high level of play in the second half of her sophomore season was a catalyst for the Lady Bears’ regular-season conference championship. Under Milleson’s leadership, the Lady Bears have won 70 games over the last three seasons, including a total of five postseason victories in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The Lady Bears topped the 20-win mark for the 17th time in school history in 2011-12, finishing 24-9 overall to match the ninthhighest single-season win total in the 43-year history of the program. Additionally, MSU’s 12-win improvement from a 10-victory season in Milleson’s second year (200809) to a 22-11 record just one year later tied for the seventh-best turnaround in the nation in 2009-10 and propelled the Lady Bears to their first postseason tournament appearance in five seasons. The Lady Bears renaissance under Milleson has been keyed by an infusion of talented newcomers since her arrival on campus. Milleson’s recruiting haul has ultimately landed 10 all-conference honorees over the past three seasons alone, as well as either an MVC Freshman or Newcomer of the Year award in each of her first four seasons at MSU, including 2010 Jackie Stiles MVC Player of the Year Casey Garrison. Additionally, Christiana Shorter was named the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2010, becoming the second straight Lady Bear to earn the league’s top rookie honor after Garrison earned the same distinction in 2009. Highlighted by Garrison’s four consecutive First-Team All-MVC honors, just the sixth time in league history a player has accomplished that feat, last year’s haul hiked MSU’s total number of all-conference citations to 18 (by nine different players) during her five years on the Lady Bear bench. Milleson’s squad has excelled in the classroom as well, racking up a combined 30 MVC Honor Roll and Scholar-Athlete citations during her tenure. Most notably, Lacey Boshe became the sixth Lady Bear
