SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Missouri State (9-4, 2-1 Missouri Valley Conference) outscored visiting Creighton (6-7, 0-2) by five points in each half and picked up its second league win in three tries with a 70-60 victory over the Bluejays Thursday evening at JQH Arena. A tight game early was highlighted by Casey Garrison’s 2,000th career point on a layup with 13:50 on the clock, and neither team led by as many as three points until Jaleshia Roberson’s second three-pointer made it 17-13 with 9:13 left, as three ties and six lead changes marked a back-and-forth game up to that point. Garrison, who finished the game with 14 points, six rebounds and seven assists, became the fifth player in MVC history and third at Missouri State to reach the 2,000-point plateau. Roberson canned another trey on the next possession after a Creighton basket for a 20-15 lead, her 1,100th career point, Christiana Shorter added a layup at 8:20, and Casey Garrison hit two free throws to extend MSU’s run to 13-2 before a CU bucket at 6:59 made the score 24-17 Lady Bears. The Bluejays then got a steal and hit a triple to cut the gap to four points, and Carli Tritz hit a three at 3:51 to close the visitors within 28-25. Roberson answered with a fourth three-ball to lead 33-26 with 2:07 to play, and the Lady Bears went into half with a 33-28 advantage despite making two fewer field goals than CU. Missouri State out-rebounded the Jays 18-14 and held a 9-1 advantage from the foul line in the first period. Creighton’s Jordan Garrison hit back-to-back threes out of the break to quickly put the Jays ahead 34-33 as they eventually pushed their run to 10-0 over both halves and led 36-33 with 18:16 to play. Two Shorter layups and another from Roberson got the lead back for MSU at 39-38 with 15:30 to play, and Casey Garrison and Shorter hit two more shots in the next minute to make for a 10-2 MSU run and 43-38 lead for the Lady Bears. The Lady Bears went scoreless over the next 3:55 but CU was only able to score two points in the interim as Roberson’s runner at 10:24 got the lead back to five at 45-40. The teams traded baskets to 49-44 before Lacey Boshe rolled a short jumper over the rim at 7:54 for a 51-44 advantage, and Aly Stock’s layup at 6:53 gave MSU its largest lead of the game at 54-46. Creighton cut the lead in half with two quick buckets in the next minute, but the Lady Bears responded by making six consecutive free throws to push make the score 60-50 with 4:17 to play. Taylor Johnson’s trey with 1:16 left brought CU to within six points at 6256, and the Jays cut the lead to five on two occasions before the Lady Bears broke the press for a Boshe layup with 25 seconds left and Roberson intercepted a pass on CU’s next possession before making three free throws in the final 17 seconds to cap a seasonhigh 25-point night. Roberson connected on 7-of-9 shots from the floor, including 4-of-6 from three-point land, and made 7-of-8 free throws. Shorter had 14 points and eight boards, and Boshe made four of her five field goals for eight points.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Missouri State (10-4, 3-1 Missouri Valley Conference) scored the first 15 points of the game and limited Drake (7-7, 1-2) to 21.8 percent shooting in a 78-46 victory Saturday evening at JQH Arena. The Lady Bears tied an arena record by allowing 46 points, which was also an opponent season low along with DU’s shooting percentage (.218), field goals made (12), three-pointers made (2), three-point percentage (.143) and assists (5). Christiana Shorter had four points and four rebounds in the game’s first two minutes and Jaleshia Roberson drained a pair of threes to propel to Lady Bears to a 15-0 lead as Drake began the game 0-for-8 from the field with four turnovers before scoring with 13:53 on the clock to make the score 15-2. Roberson’s third trey made it 18-2 out of the ensuing media timeout, and the lead grew to 20 points at 28-8 when Aly Stock put in a jumper with 6:13 remaining in the period. The Lady Bears pushed the advantage to as many as 22 points on two occasions before an 11-2 Drake run took the score from 32-10 at 4:57 to 34-21 with 38 seconds left. Casey Garrison hit a trey with 20 seconds left for a 37-21 halftime lead. Eight Lady Bears scored in the first period and the team shot 16of-29 (55.2 percent) while holding Drake to 7-of-31 (22.6 percent). Missouri State began the second half on a 7-2 run to lead 44-23 and Lacey Boshe gave the Lady Bears their largest lead yet at 51-28 with a layup at the 13:33 mark after the Bulldogs had closed the gap to 18 points. Garrison’s third trey in as many tries made it 56-32 10:57 left and MSU held Drake scoreless for over three minutes before a three-pointer made it 58-35 with 8:10 to go. Roberson’s fifth three-pointer of the night came with 6:15 to play and tied her with Jackie Stiles for fourth-place at MSU with 221 threes while making the score 61-37, and the senior added two free throws on MSU’s next possession for a 26-point lead. Roberson then passed Stiles with a sixth three-ball minutes later and finished the game with 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 6-for-10 from deep with five assists. In all, 12 Lady Bears scored, including Bry Snow’s first MSU points with two late baskets. Garrison added 16 on 6-for-10 shooting, and Shorter had eight to go with nine rebounds. Jasmine Malone hauled in eight boards as MSU trailed the league’s top rebounding club by a 39-37 margin. Missouri State shot 54.1 percent overall (33-61) and made nine of its 18 three-point attempts. Drake did outscore MSU 20-3 from the foul line, an odd statistic considering the final score.

WICHITA, Kan. — Missouri State battled back from a 12-point second-half deficit at Wichita State Saturday before missing two shots for the tie and the win in the final seconds of a 53-51 setback in Missouri Valley Conference play at Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan. The Lady Bears had the final possession and missed their first try for the tie, but the rebound went out of bounds of the Shockers with 3.6 seconds on the clock. The ensuing inbounds pass rolled through everyone on the floor untouched and went out of bounds next to the MSU bench for Wichita State’s possession. WSU inbounded, was fouled and missed its first free throw and Casey Garrison’s half-court heave was on line but came up short, grazing the bottom of the net as it went by. The Lady Bears committed 15 turnovers in the first period, including six before the first media timeout on the way to a 7-3 deficit. Lacey Boshe’s free throw at the 14:05 mark capped a 5-0 MSU run and gave the Lady Bears their first lead at 8-7, and the teams exchanged baskets before an 8-0 Shocker run made it 17-10 in favor of the home team. Whitney Edie’s layup with 7:24 remaining in the half broke a 5:54 scoreless streak for the Lady Bears, and Boshe and Bry Snow hit shots in the final three minutes of the period to pull Missouri State within one point each time before WSU scored for a 23-20 halftime margin. Missouri State shot 40.9 percent in the first half compared to 39.3 for WSU and held a 19-13 rebounding advantage, but trailed by six in turnovers, leading to the three-point deficit. The Lady Bears cut WSU’s lead to a single point twice early in the second half, including Christiana Shorter’s 1,000th career point on a layup at the 18:54 mark for a 25-24 score. The Shockers answered that with a 15-4 run over the next 5:24 to open up a 40-28 advantage before Desiree Phillips stopped it with a free throw. Shorter scored four more points from there to make the score 40-33, and, after the Shockers got a layup to lead by nine again, the Lady Bears ripped off an 8-0 run capped by Shorter’s driving layup that made the score 42-41 WSU with 7:01 to play. Another Shorter bucket made it 44-43 as the Lady Bears got within one point for a fourth time in the second period, but the Shockers answered with a 6-0 run to over two minutes to lead 50-43 with 3:58 to play. Garrison hit a pair of free throws and a long jumper to make it 50-47 and drained another in response to WSU’s make for a 52-49 score and 1:28 to go. The senior made it eight straight MSU points with a shot for 53-51 and 49 seconds left, and Shorter’s 12th rebound gave the Lady Bears the final possession down two points. Shorter notched her 19th career double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds as MSU led the Shockers by a 39-25 margin on the boards. Garrison finished with 12 points and Edie had six points and six boards. The Lady Bears ended the game with 24 turnovers.
