2011-12 GAME SUMMARIES GAME 29

GAME 30

Old Dominion knocked down 12 three-pointers and got 28 points from Kent Bazemore to turn back MSU, 73-67, in a nationally-televised BracketBusters tilt.   Trian Iliadis also buried four three-pointers to finish with 14 points for ODU.   Kyle Weems led four MSU players in double figures with 15 points and 6 rebounds, while Anthony Downing and Jarmar Gulley pitched in 13 points apiece.   The game was a statistical dead heat with MSU out-rebounding the visitors 30-29, while both teams hit 25 field goals, 11 free throws and committed 9 turnovers. It was ODU’s long-range efforts, however that consistently stood out.   A 10-0 run by ODU in the last three minutes of the first half put the visitors ahead 30-27 at the break. However, the Bears came out storming and collected a dunk by Christian Kirk and transition layup by Downing to move on top 31-30.   A Pickens layup just under three minutes into the second half put the Bears ahead 36-33, but a trey from Iliadis a minute later helped spark another 10-0 Monarchs’ run. By the time the run peaked at the 15:24 mark, ODU led 43-36.   ODU later made it 51-42 with just under 12 minutes to go on a Donte Hill trey.   The Bears continued to battle and cut their deficit to five later in the half. A transition bucket by Downing, and a Gulley field goal made it 53-48 at the 9:34 mark. However, a soft foul on Downing sent Bazemore to the line on ODU’s next possession, and sparked him to score 9 straight over the next five minutes.   With three-and-a-half minutes left, Pickens stripped the ball from Bazemore near mid-court and raced down the floor for a layup. Bazemore fouled the sophomore on the play, giving Pickens a chance to pull the Bears back within five points. Pickens missed the ensuing and-one free throw, and then Iliadis dropped in his final trey of the night to push the visitors’ lead to 65-56.   The Bears rallied in the final two minutes when Caleb Patterson scored a short jumper, and Downing knocked down a clutch three over a 21-second span to make it a 67-62 game. Bazemore made a pair of free throws with 1:32 to play, but Weems responded with a trey nine seconds later to make it 69-65.   Hill made one-of-two free throws with 1:19 left, and Patterson responded with a pair of foul shots for the Bears to gain ground and make it 70-67 with 1:08 left.   The Bears got a timely stop on ODU’s next possession, forcing Bazemore into a missed jumper. Gulley tracked down the long rebound, and MSU quickly got the ball down the floor to Patterson who missed from point-blank range in traffic. MSU then had to foul and sent Nick Wright to the line where he made 1-of-2 free throws to keep the Bears within four. MSU missed two threes on their next trip before Bazemore iced the game with two more free throws.

Missouri State shot a season-low 31.3 percent from the field and never led in a 59-46 senior night setback to visiting Indiana State.   The Sycamores spoiled MSU’s chance to lock up the No. 3 seed for the MVC Tournament in St. Louis and handed the Bears just their third senior-night defeat since they moved to Division I in 1982-83.   Dwayne Lathan led three ISU players in double figures with 12 points. Indiana State finished 21-for-49 from the field and out-rebounded the home club 41-34.   After Indiana State expanded its 10-point halftime lead to 12 on the first bucket of the second half, MSU got the offense rolling and put together a 9-0 run to pull within 30-27 at the 14:42 mark. A three-point play by Kyle Weems and a hook shot by Christian Kirk saprked the run and got the Bears back in the hunt.   Indiana State ended a five-minute scoring drought at the 12:57 mark when Lathan dropped in a three-pointer from the left wing to stretch the ISU advantage back to six. A fast-break layup by Steve McWhorter followed on the next Sycamores’ possession to stretch the game back to 35-27.   The Bears got a layup by Jarmar Gulley and a quick jumper by Caleb Patterson on their next two possessions to make it a 37-31 game with 10:39 remaining. But, Indiana State had an answer for every run after that.   After a jumper off an in-bound play by Kyle Weems with 6:38 to go made it 44-36, the Bears got their final 10 points from Anthony Downing. Indiana State, meanwhile stretched out the clock, got the breaks it needed down the stretch to hand MSU just its third double-figure loss ever at JQH Arena.   Downing finished with a game-high 14 points, while Gulley tacked on 13 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double at Missouri State.   The Bears’ four seniors all scored, but combined for just 14 points, including 7 by Weems who had a 28-game double-figure scoring streak snapped. Michael Bizoukas scored three, while Patterson and Isaiah Rhine added two points.   Late in the first half, a 12-0 run by the visitors put ISU ahead, 28-18, at the intermission. The Bears got a tip-in from Gulley at the 8:38 mark to pull MSU within 13-12. After a Printy trey pushed ISU back ahead by four, Rhine knocked down a short jumper from the left baseline to make it a 16-14 game.   It was all Indiana State over the last five minutes of the first half. ISU reeled off 12 straight before Gulley closed out the half with four unanswered points. During the ISU’ run, it led by as many as 14 before the late rally by Gulley.
