When the Missouri State Bears traveled to Murray State on Oct. 9, 2010, one of the most exciting games in Division I FCS history emerged after the 3 hour, 9 minute battle of attrition saw the Racers prevail 72-59. Among the many school records broken in the game, most notable was a national record for combined total offense. The Bears accounted for 607 yards of total offense on 50 plays, the 11th-highest total in school history, while Murray State tallied 816 yards on an amazing 94 plays. The 1,423 combined yards established a new NCAA Division I FCS record for total yards, breaking the old standard of 1,418 set by Howard (740) vs. Bethune Cookman (678), set Sept. 19, 1987 on 161 total plays. Murray State quarterback Casey Brockman was 32-for-41 for 570 yards and 7 touchdowns (5 to Marcus Harris) in the game, which broke school records for the latter two categories. He also finished with 586 yards of total offense, a new MSU opponent record along with an all-time high water mark for passing yards by a Bears’ foe. Missouri State, which surrendered the final 20 points of the game to allow a 59-52 lead to slip away in the final 8:28, was led by Chris Douglas who carried 10 times for 191 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Douglas’ 97-yard run from scrimmage in the first quarter matched the second-longest in Missouri State history and set the fast track. MSU finished with 436 rushing yards on 36 carries with Douglas and Stephen Johnston (13-for-164) going over the century mark, and quarterback Cody Kirby setting a career high with 13 carries for 81 yards and four touchdowns. Kirby also passed for 171 yards on the day and was 10-for-14 through the air.
