1718 Manhattan School of Music Performance Calendar

Page 1

I am delighted to welcome you to Manhattan School of Music’s 2017–18 season. This year, our wide-ranging program of performances spotlights MSM’s prodigiously talented student artists (from more than 50 countries and nearly every state), world-renowned faculty, special guests, and master class artists as they bring thrilling life to a repertoire of classical, jazz, and musical theatre works. We are proud to offer a program of singular breadth, one that will transport audiences over the course of eight months and hundreds of performances, principally from MSM’s many stages but also in special engagements at some of this city’s most prestigious venues. This season also marks a major development in the artistic life of the School. Thanks in large part to a generous anchor gift from alumna and MSM Trustee Noémi Karpati Neidorff and her husband Michael Neidorff, construction is underway on the Centennial Project, a comprehensive re-imagining of the MSM campus that will see a grand new entrance on Claremont Avenue; an expanded entryway and lobby; and a major renovation of our historic principal performance space (named for Noémi and Michael), Neidorff-Karpati Hall. And although we will be without the hall during its season-long transformation, our expansive 2017–18 performance program proceeds in MSM’s eight other venues as well as on a range of notable New York City stages that includes the Riverside Church, Harlem Stage, Florence Gould Hall at the French Institute Alliance Française, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Aaron Davis Hall at City College, Symphony Space, Merkin Concert Hall, and the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College. As we begin to prepare for MSM’s 100th-anniversary celebrations in 2018–19, it is my hope that the transformative work being done in and around the School through the coming year, especially the magnificent program of music-making, provides a measure of uplift in these tumultuous times. We turn to the arts for inspiration, consolation, and a shared sense of purpose; once again this year, our international student body and world-renowned guest artists will offer all that and more. These pages provide a restorative roadmap into the wide world of music-making. I hope you will come along for the ride.

James Gandre, President

With construction underway on Manhattan School of Music’s milestone Centennial Project, which will see a grand new entrance, an expansive new lobby, and a fully renovated principal performance space (Neidorff-Karpati Hall), the School is gearing up to launch its next hundred years with an architectural revitalization that underpins every aspect of its mission.

NEIDORFF-KARPATI HALL IS POISED TO BE ONE OF NEW YORK’S MAJOR CULTURAL GATHERING PLACES IN THE HEART OF ONE OF AMERICA’S MOST ARTISTICALLY FERTILE COMMUNITIES. THIS ART DECO CLASSIC WILL CELEBRATE AND AMPLIFY OUR MOST SACRED DEMOCRATIC VALUES OF DIVERSITY, EMPATHY, AND CREATIVITY.” Stefon Harris (BM ’95, MM ’97) MSM Associate Dean and Director of the Jazz Arts Program

Claremont Avenue’s European flavor, the bucolic beauty of Sakura Park, and the imposing grandeur of the Riverside Church and Grant’s Tomb will heighten the sense of occasion that accompanies every arrival at MSM’s doors.

This space will act as both the School’s main entryway and the lobby for Neidorff-Karpati Hall. The removal of walls and the addition of glass doors, while retaining the existing Art Deco detail, will create a larger and more visually expansive space.

The renovation of MSM’s concert hall will feature an entrance sound lock; new house lighting, décor, seats, and carpeting; a widened proscenium and new acoustic shell; and a shortened balcony.

THIS WONDERFUL HALL LAUNCHED ME INTO NEW YORK OPERA, WHICH OPENED THE DOOR TO THE REST OF THE WORLD. I AM THRILLED MSM IS COMMITTING TO ITS RENEWAL, JUST IN TIME FOR THE SCHOOL’S 100TH ANNIVERSARY AND FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS OF YOUNG OPERA SINGERS.”

THE CAREER I HAVE NOW, WHILE NOT DIRECTLY IN MUSIC, USES SO MANY OF THE SKILLS I LEARNED AT MSM. HEARING ABOUT THE NEW RENOVATION PLANS FOR NEIDORFF-KARPATI HALL WAS THE PERFECT WAY FOR ME TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL. LEAVING MY MARK BRINGS EVERYTHING IN MY LIFE FULL CIRCLE.”

BECAUSE OF MY SCHOLARSHIP I HAVE GAINED ACCESS TO A COMMUNITY WHICH HAS DONE NOTHING BUT SUPPORT ME. MSM HAS TRULY REDEFINED MY OUTLOOK ON MUSIC AND HAS GIVEN ME THE TOOLS TO BUILD A CAREER.” Toby Ekpunobi, Class of 2018 Hometown: Eustis, Florida Bachelor of Music Candidate, Jazz Trombone
