MOMBASA COUNTY BUILDING ON 55 YEARS OF PARTNERSHIP WITH KENYANS IN CIVIL SOCIETY, THE PRIVATE SECTOR AND GOVERNMENT

I

n 2015, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) invested KES 47.2 billion to advance Kenya’s development goals. Our support is focused in multiple sectors, including agriculture, economic growth, education and youth, environment, health, water and sanitation, and energy. Our investments are guided by the global Sustainable Development Goals, Kenya’s long-term development plan, Vision 2030, and the 2010 Constitution. Through strong partnerships with the national and county governments, civil society and the private sector, we are working together to end extreme poverty and build resilient, democratic societies where more men, women and children have access to opportunities that improve their lives.

EFFECTIVE DEVOLUTION

Supporting the government and the people of Kenya to implement the country’s reform agenda, with a special focus on the successful implementation of devolution Three years into the process, devolution is already delivering real improvements in governance and the lives of Kenyans – and even greater benefits are within reach. Done well, devolution will address important economic, social and governance issues. USAID is strengthening the link between citizens and their county governments. Mombasa citizens are becoming more actively engaged in the democratic process by learning more about how county government works and providing useful contributions to key legislative and financial decisions. Our investments are also helping the Mombasa County Government responsibly plan for, deliver and manage county affairs in a manner that responds to the immediate needs and priorities of its citizens, and charts a course for long-term development.

INVESTING IN KENYANS

Contributing to a healthy, well-nourished, and educated Kenyan population USAID is supporting the Government of Kenya vision of building a strong, more robust health-care system that can deliver affordable, quality health services to the greatest possible number of Kenyans. We are working with county health teams to reduce preventable deaths and illnesses by addressing health challenges such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV and AIDS. Our efforts also focus on making childbirth safer for mothers and their children, providing them with adequate nutrition, clean water and sanitation, and giving couples options to plan their families. We are partners in the Government of Kenya national early-grade reading program, which reaches every Class One and Two public-school pupil in the country. Our scholarships also help high-achieving but disadvantaged students complete their education.

PARTNERING WITH USAID

USAID assistance is delivered through our implementing partners, which include local, national and international non-governmental organizations, civil society groups and private businesses, as well as Government of Kenya agencies. We also work with the new generation of Kenyan leaders, thinkers, entrepreneurs, and innovators who are leading the transformation of their societies.

INCLUSIVE, ENVIRONMENTALLYSOUND ECONOMIC GROWTH Helping more Kenyans contribute to and benefit from increased economic growth

With USAID support, more Kenyans are gaining access to the tools and opportunities to lift themselves out of poverty. Smallholder farmers are embracing new farming methods and accessing markets that help them increase their productivity and incomes. Entrepreneurs – particularly women and young people – are now able to access credit to sustain and grow their businesses through our partnerships with local financial institutions. These relationships are also helping to unlock financing in areas such as agricultural processing and export, clean water and energy. Our work with county governments helps them attract investments from the private and public sectors. With more of these partnerships, counties can increase revenue, expand the provision of social services, and build thriving local economies that generate more employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for residents. USAID promotes the conservation of Kenya’s unique biodiversity and the sustainable management of its natural resources. We support our Kenyan partners on the front lines of the fight against illegal wildlife poaching and trafficking. Our work also helps the government and people of Kenya respond to the realities of climate change, including developing strategies to reduce harmful emissions, and helping vulnerable communities better prepare for and bounce back from drought.

Some of these partners, listed on the back page, have offices or field staff working in Mombasa County or are supporting local organizations to deliver development assistance. Others, working in Nairobi or elsewhere, are able to offer technical assistance in Mombasa. USAID partners with organizations, businesses and entities that successfully respond to competitive solicitations. Visit www.fbo.gov and www.grants.gov and search for Kenya to find relevant solicitations, or contact one of our development professionals below.
