LULULEMON SSC

As a collaborative inter-disciplinary team at DIALOG, we put together a proposal in for the Lululemon’s new office on their False Creek Flats property. Our team was the only allCanadian practice, that had made it to the top four proposals.

In addition to provided design brief, extensive research was completed to understand workplace strategy, the future of a connected workspace. We had understand the the operation and functionality of the different employee’s daily work, and yet still reflecting the Lululemon mantras.

Different iterative design options were developed to communicate the function and form that shaped the final proposed concept. Major factors that influenced these diagrams included solar exposure, circulation, untraditional break-out spaces, places of refuge, community space, views and vantage points, and its responsive relationship to the neighbouring context. This was all done whilst working within the confinements of an area of 500,000 SF under the existing CD-1 zoning.

CAPITAL POINT

While at DIALOG, a Real Estate Developer client had purchase two towers in the Metrotown area in Burnaby, with the intention to have it renovated, with an addition of a two level podium at grade. In order to do deliver the project, we had to meet the City’s new mandates and fulfill the Step Code 3 energy efficiency performance requirements.

For the exterior concept, I helped lead the design. We had three principles in mind: 1) 50/50 window-wall ratio to meet the city’s requirements; 2) envelop the structure so it feels like a contemporary shrink wrap; and 3) in some way to pay homage to the original gold glass.

For the first principle, we used the 50/50 window-wall ratio to be expressed vertically to make the buildings appear taller. For the second, we used curved glass at the corners to make the chamfered corners more contemporary. And lastly, the gold was used at the main building entries at grade for a grand expression of way-finding.

In the interior, we focused on developing the lobby and common public spaces focusing on fitting a list of furniture and equipment with consideration to seamless integration of the existing structure, and proposed mechanical, plumbing and electrical through extensive collaboration and coordination.

BRITANNIA MUSEUM

The City of Richmond approached StudioHuB Architects to come up with different remediation strategies, along with different proposed layouts of different room and room areas, for the First Nations Bunkhouse at the Steveston waterfront. We worked closely with the different disciplines, especially the Structural team to develop two main concept. The first approach is to retain the existing wood structure, and to brace it with a new steel structure. This iteration gives a clear narrative of new versus old. The second approach was an all old wood approach, which holds up to true to it original design intent. Each option had different mechanical and electrical strategies, which a contractor priced out for the city to determine a budget for.

ZAAP CHARGE

Zaap Charge is a electric vehicle charge start-up, that reached out to me for help in defining what their product looks like. Before delving into the design, I went over their branding, and noticed that they can simplify their graphics to more align with what their company’s brand identity and values.

Original Branding

To address both the branding and EV chargers altogether. Through a series of concepts, colour stories and principles a couple of new brand options were finetuned, which lead to the start-up’s finalized design of the EV charge stations.

Does a good job on representating the idea of ‘recharge’ and ‘motion’. Needs to take a step back to reflect on graphics principles (determined in following page)

Helpful to know, but too much text is distracting for a clean logo and can find this elsewhere

Colour story difficult to follow and down the line, hard to change. A single colour can be changed much easier

DESIGN - BUILD -

REFUGE PHASE 3

The School of Architecture at Dalhousie is unique in Canada for their design-build labs. Our group was most interested in the rural retreat, and using fundamental building techniques and details to construct with local building materials. These materials included hemlock for the beams and joists, spruce framing and interior finishes, white cedar shingle roof and cladding, and hemlock cladded gable ends.

The adjacent diagram demonstrates the third and final phase of that was completed by our group for the final finished product captured in the photo on the right. We were able to brainstorm and collaboratively design these details, and then work together to build them within the short timeline that was given.

PARADE OF LIGHTS

Every year, the architecture students design a float for Dalhousie University’s float in the Halifax annual Parade of Lights. In 2016, I took the inititative to lead a team of 13 to work towards a timeline and to actualize a design based on a simple napkin sketch shown on the right. Instead of having a massive float on a truck, we decided to go the route of designing installations that can be installed on bicycles to ride in the parade.

We came up with the design of snowflake inspired wings to fly through the streets of Halifax. As we pedaled through the Halifax streets in the evening, the lit up wings would flutter through the streets.
