LET’S MAKE 2019 OUR BEST SEASON EVER! EVERGREEN CHEVROLET

ALWAYS MORE, ALWAYS FOR 2019LESS, skyline football | team xxIii | 1. S.T. ISSAQUAH EXIT 15, I-90

Welcome to the 2019 Season of

skyline high school football! Welcome to the 2019 Season of Skyline High School Football and the 23rd Team (TXXIII) in school history! Our team has had a very successful offseason! The group of young men is already showing a unity that is hard to find at such an early point in the season. As I write this message to you, I cannot help but think about how far this program has come in such a short period of time. This is a truly remarkable program to be a part of. The community, school and support these young men get is amazing. Many of these young men were in the stands watching, visualizing and waiting for their time to be a Spartan and run out onto the field, representing the greater Skyline community. While every year is different, we try to live by these two standards: Protect the Tradition and United we will be the Hardest Working, Most Disciplined, Best Conditioned TEAM in the State. Protecting the Tradition of Skyline Football is not about winning State Championships. This is abouprotecting the tradition of excellence on and off the field and living to a standard that makes everyone proud to say they are a Spartan. The tradition of Skyline Football extends in the classroom, as well as, the community. We expect these young men to be inclusive of everyone. When this happens, their play on the gridiron will take care of itself.

Mat Taylor Head Coach Since 2008

Untied we will be the Hardest Working, Most Disciplined, Best Conditioned Team in the State is probably the most important identity I want these young men to live by and take aware from this football program when they move on. Unity is something these young men will have to embody in order to be successful on the field. Discipline is essential to making sure everyone is working towards a common goal and in reality every single play on the field. Furthermore, conditioning will ensure we are able to be at our peak performance until the last play of the game. While these are examples of how this identity looks on the field, my hope is that they take each of these attributes to their everyday lives into adulthood. Have great work ethic in the classroom, work place and making sure their families are provided for. Show tremendous discipline when faced with adverse moments and making the right decisions. Lastly, we want these young men to not only be in good physical condition, but be well conditioned mentally and live a well-balanced lifestyle as they get older. Thank you for your continued support of Skyline Football. We hope to make the Skyline community proud. We look forward to seeing you and value your support on Friday Nights! Go Spartans!

Spartan Fans…I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to another exciting sports season at Skyline High School. As our school and athletic program continues to grow, we set our sights on yet another successful sports season. However, success does not just happen – it is the result of many people working together to benefit our student-athletes. Whether you are a parent, community member, Skyline staff, coach or family member, I thank you in advance for your continued positive support in making Skyline a GREAT school. Together – we can continue to make a difference! As you enjoy the athletic contest, please keep in mind that sportsmanship is a critical component to the success of any event. As a school and an athletic department, we expect our student-athletes to be leaders in the areas of achievement and sportsmanship in the classroom, on the field and in the bleachers. Please join us in showing enthusiasm for our teams by cheering for their efforts rather than criticizing our opponents or the officials. We hope you enjoy your time watching Skyline athletics and thank you for your continued support of our school and athletic program. Our staff, coaches and student-athletes work extremely hard, and we hope to see you at another contest soon.

Keith Hennig Principal since 2018

Go SPARTANS!

Spartans, thank you for your continued support of Skyline Athletics. The Fall Sports season is here, and all the teams are hard at work, which shows their commitment and dedication to their team mates and Skyline. I know they are excited for the games to begin. Student involvement in any activity, sport, or club is an important part of the culture at Skyline and I am excited for the start of a new year. While attending athletic events, please show your Spartan Pride by positively supporting the student-athletes and respecting the opponents and officials. Your support for Skyline High School is appreciated and valued. Have a great season!

Every season, Skyline Gridiron Club (SGC) chooses a theme that expresses the sentiment of our mission: To establish, cultivate and maintain the highest level of relationships with and between the Skyline Spartan Football Program of Sammamish, Washington and it various constituencies. The theme for this 23rd season of football in Sparta articulates just that. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), for the first time in over 30 years, during the 2018-19 school year, there was a decline in high school sports participation. This year’s total, the third highest ever, consists of 4,534,758 boys and 3,402,733 girls, according to the figures obtained from the 51-member state high school associations, which includes the District of Columbia. The last decline in sports participation numbers occurred during the 1988-89 school year. Dr. Karissa Niehoff, NFHS executive director. “The data from this year’s survey serves as a reminder that we have to work even harder in the coming years to involve more students in these vital programs”. The biggest contributors to the decline were the two longstanding and popular sports of football and basketball. Participation in boys 11-player football declined by 30,829 participants to 1,006,013 – the lowest mark since 1,002,734 in the 1999-2000 school year. For those of us that believe high school football offers a lot more than wins or losses, this trend has been troubling. SGC’s board of directors are all alumni parents of Skyline football. We fondly remember the early years when few were in the stands and on-the-field success was building the foundation of what is still today a nationally recognized program. SGCs efforts are to assist the coaching staff and administration in continuing to extol the virtues of football – around the campus and into the community. Regardless of any one player, coach, volunteer or season of play, “Protecting the Tradition” can be seen in our feeder youth program, with off-season trainings, and engaged volunteers. The Sammamish community has changed since Skyline opening in 1997 and its affects can be felt. What hasn’t changed is the commitment of Spartan football to offer a safe, competitive and exciting program for any athlete to enjoy. And Skyline Gridiron Club stays committed to working all year long to support every athlete, coach and parent to experience what thousands have before them! Go Skyline! #FootballAnIncredibleGame

“Stay focused. Your start does not determine how you’re going to finish” - Herm Edwards, ASU Head Coach, NFL Player/Coach

giving back In 2006 and 2007 the families of Skyline football encouraged Skyline Gridiron Club to “adopt” Warren Easton Charter School in New Orleans, after it was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. The following summer, two Spartan coaches led a team from around Washington State representing the Seattle Seahawks to an undefeated championship in the NFL’s National 7v7 High School Showcase, held at the New Orleans Saints practice facility. Players, coaches and a few Skyline parents took time to visit the campus of Warren Easton to witness for themselves how a community like Sparta can make a positive impact off the field to help others less fortunate continue to participate in football. Several years ago, we shifted our support to find a school within Washington and are now connected to a 1A school in South Grant County, the Wahluke Warriors. Athletes in this program have challenges that most schools like Skyline can’t imagine. SGC is proud that as old technology is replaced in Sparta, it is refurbished and donated to help Wahluke advance the sport of football on their campus. Other ideas are always in the game plan. The Warriors gathered recently on their field for this photo to say “Thank You” and let Sparta know they appreciate our continuing support. Skyline Football history includes amazing athletes. After graduation, paths lead in many directions. Many pursue careers based on a degree; other pursue their passion. A small percentage, including these ten alumni, have found unique opportunities in their life’s journey that builds on their Spartan football experience on bigger stages.

Fans can follow our alumni showcases on Facebook and Twitter. Many have gone on to play on Saturdays – checkout out the Collegiate Gridiron list in this program.

…DEDICATION OVER DECADES “If it wasn’t for football, a lot of the best times of my life wouldn’t exist.” - Jon Gruden

Thousands of Spartan faithful have been along for the ride, watching the first twenty two teams contribute to the legacy of the program. What began in 1997 has been taken to heights that still amaze many. Spartan Stadium, the home of Skyline Football, continues to offer the community a chance to be part of many special moments, set early on a foundation for current and future athletes to continue to build on in their quest to “Protect the Tradition”.
