Switching and Scenery
T
he Edsall Industrial RR is a 3 x 6 switching layout, constructed while waiting for my RR room to be rebuilt. The EIRR served several purposes. It provided a modeling opportunity while residing in a temporary apartment; allowed me to try modeling in a different period – in this case, the 21st Century; and provided a test bed to determine the requirements for reliable switching in N scale.
This article provides an overview of the scenery techniques used on the layout and can be applied to a small or large track plan. For the most part, the techniques can be used in any scale – just make everything larger or smaller as necessary. In any scale, the key to realistic scenery is variety. Nature provides an amazing diversity of flora; and fortunately,
materials are easily available to recreate that variety on our layouts.
The Layout The EIRR track plan is loosely based on a chapter in Bernie Kempinski’s book “Midsized Track Plans for Realistic Layouts” (http://www.geocities.com/ bkempins/ASMMain/TrackPlanBook. html). The prototype is current day Norfolk Southern, pretty much right in
