MQHYA by Cat Guenther

Elizabeth West

Elizabeth West is a 7th grade student at Williamston Middle School. She is a straight A student, plays the ute in the middle school band, and plays basketball for her school as well as for the AAU team Capitol City Express. Elizabeth also has a strong passion for horses. Last year she showed her horse “Move With Me,” aka Trigger. Elizabeth has owned Trigger for four years. Her accomplishments with him include winning the Congress twice and winning top ten overall and 13 & under Champion at the Youth World Show, both in Hunter Under Saddle. Last summer Elizabeth acquired a new show partner, “Chevrolatte,” aka Mocha. West was asked to describe her new show partner, “I had watched him show a lot and never thought that he would ever be mine. My rst show with him was at the 2015 MQHA Lisa Terry show. We started off great and won the high-point 18 & under at that show. At the Congress we were Reserve Champion in the NSBA showmanship. We have been working very hard for this show season. He is good at patterns, which lets me focus more on my horsemanship. I am very excited for 2016!” This year Elizabeth was elected as the new MQHYA vice president. Elizabeth also said, “I would like to thank Christie Showerman for her coaching. I would also like to thank my sister, Katherine, and parents, Jeff and Christine, for their support.”

Saying Goodbye...

This horse was beauty on earth, our boy “Luke” (Lukamotion). A champion and a truly extraordinary horse. He could rock the show ring with his long and graceful stride, appearing effortless in his movement. Pointing his toes and knowing what to do when we would “just sit up and ride.” He loved showing, especially at Ludington, and knew his jobs very well. A friend once said that he was the “Captain of the ship” at our barn, which I believe is so true. Proud and noble one minute and so incredibly goofy and playful the next. He loved zipping and unzipping our jackets, forcing his nose in our pockets in hopes of nding the treat he was sure we wanted him to have. He believed that humans were wonderful and made his world “right.” Luke loved everyone to stop and say “hi” at his stall, because in his mind, why would you not want to say hi to him? He loved the sight, smell, and sound of our trainer, Kathy Williams, and would slyly inch over to stand next to her at any given opportunity. Luke deeply loved my girls, Josie and Jacqueline. He felt well guided by Josie, with her quiet, calm and condent way in riding and handling him. And Luke knew when small-sized Jacqueline was on his back, that he had precious cargo and needed to be a good and gentle boy with her. I believe he knew that I loved him and that I would care for him and give him everything he needed. He would come to me when called (when not feeling playful) and would stare me down until I put his halter on. He could communicate so well with his eyes. I know with every ber of my being that he thought life was really pretty fantastic!

Luke sadly lost his battle with colic and it’s numerous complications. He went into surgery like a champ and fought hard for just over four months. He so wanted to live, and stay with us...his humans, as well as his horse buddies. But, with life being so precious, we simply don’t know the plan. If sheer willpower were all that was needed, then my will alone would have kept Luke alive. His will be a life never forgotten and always cherished. My thanks to my husband, Joe, along with Kathy Williams, Dr. Stephanie Rubie, the MSU Vet Hospital, and my friends and family for loving us and our amazing boy, Luke. I miss you my boy. ~ Julie Horlings www.MIQuarterHorse.com

A. Failure by exhibitor to wear correct number(s) in a visible manner shall result in disqualification. B. Two and three year old performance classes will be split at the discretion of the show management. C. The Futurity Committee follows all AQHA rules and regulations regarding bits, bosals and artificial appliances. Further, the Futurity Committee, at its discretion, reserves the right to do a random check in all classes for artificial devices or equipment. If there are any violations discovered, then the horse involved will not be allowed to enter the ring. DRUG TESTING 28. For the purposes of the Breeders' Futurity ONLY, weanlings will not be subject to drug testing. All horses exhibited at the MQHBF are subject to the current AQHA Drug testing rules and regulations. A. Every exhibitor at the Michigan Quarter Horse Breeders' Futurity shall upon request permit a specimen of urine, saliva, blood or other substance to be taken for testing. Refusal to comply with such request shall constitute grounds for immediate disqualification of the animal from further participation at the show and forfeiture of all awards earned by that animal. If the laboratory report on the chemical analysis is of the presence of a forbidden drug or medication, this shall be taken as prima facie evidence that such substance has been administered to the horse either internally or externally. B. The exhibitor, whether owner or otherwise, shall be responsible for, and be the absolute insurer of, the condition of the horses he/she enters and exhibits, regardless of the acts of third parties. C. Any person entering the arena with a horse for the purpose of having his/her horse judged shall be deemed to have given his or her consent to have said horse submit to testing. D. If a positive drug test occurs at the MQHA Futurity, it could result in a maximum penalty of forfeiture of all monies and awards earned by that horse and owner/ exhibitor in that current year's Futurity. In addition, the owner/exhibitor may be ineligible to show or have any of their horses shown in the following year's Futurity. 1. A sub-committee, consisting of, the Futurity Director, the Drug Testing Director and the MQHA Executive Committee, will review the drug test information and make its recommendation to the MQ Board. 2. The MQ Board will then proceed with the final decision abiding by section 8, MQHA DRUG TESTING AND THERAPEUTIC MEDICATION RULES in the MQHA rule book, or any other applicable AQHA guideline. SECTION 2 - MQHA STALLION SERVICE AUCTION, FUTURITY AND SNAFFLE BIT 29. The Concept: A. To develop a high-money Futurity funded by the sale of donated stallion services. C. This Futurity will be known as the MQHA Stallion Service Sale Futurity. It is only for foals resulting from the Stallion Service Sale. Classes offered are: weanling halter, yearling longe line, two-year-old snaffle bit, and three year old hunter under saddle. D. All foals showing in the Stallion Service Sale Futurity (mare owners and stallion owners) must be eligible to be registered with a known breed association. 30. The Procedure: A. The MQHA Stallion Service Sale Futurity will be held in conjunction with the MQHA Breeders' Futurity and judged by three judges. One judge can be a nonAQHA approved judge. B. A stallion owner will be eligible to enter a foal from the Stallion he/she donates. A stallion owner may donate more than one service if he/she wishes to do so. The stallion owner (agent) shall notify MQHA in writing, by September 1st of the year shown, the choice of which entry will represent the stallion. Entries will be accepted from September 2nd to the start of the class but will be subject to a late fee. The stallion owner (agent) is the owner (agent) who signed the breeding contract for the year the foal was conceived. Any conflicts will be decided by the SSS Committee. All decisions are final. C. Proceeds of the auction will be divided as follows after expenses: 20% MQHA, 40% Stallion Owner's purse, 40% Mare Owner's purse. 1. Stallion Service Sale pays MQHA 20% for MQHA contribution, which provides the Stallion Service Sale/Futurity Secretary. Stallion Service Sale will pay all additional expenses directly related to the Stallion Service Sale and a percentage of expenses incurred directly at the MQHBF/SSS circuit. Any expenses arising from past years sales will affect the current year's purse. D. Purchase of a service must be paid for on the day of the auction. Cash, money order, Visa/Mastercard or personal check will be accepted. E. September 10th is the cut-off date to purchase unsold stallion services from the MQHA Stallion Service Sale. 31. PAYBACKS: A. The purse structure is as follows: 34% to weanling fillies (mare owners and stallion owners), 34% to weanling colts or geldings (mare owners and stallion owners), 17% to the 2-year-old snaffle bit class entries (mare owners and stallion owners) 7% to the yearling longe line (mare owners and stallion owners) and 5% to the 3 Year Old Hunter Under Saddle (mare owners and stallion owners). Classes with fewer than 5 entries may be run concurrently and awarded by mare owner and stallion owner division. A 3% discretionary fund is established and its use will be decided by the committee on an annual basis. It will provide for larger awards and start up paybacks. 1. For the weanlings, the total weanling purse will be divided equally between the four weanling classes and the paybacks will go to six (6) places. If there are more than 32 exhibitors in the class, that class payback will go to seven (7) places. 6 places will pay 30%, 24%, 18%, 12%, 9% and 7%. 7 places will pay 29%, 23%, 15%, 11%, 9%, 7%, and 6%. The yearling longe line, the two year old and the three year old SSS classes will follow the SSS Payback Schedule. B. In the event of a tie, the tie breaker judge will decide who receives the award and ribbon, but monies will be combined and divided equally, the tie positions shall be designated as co-position (example: two-way tie for 1st place will be designated Co-Champions of said class). 32. General Rules: A. The primary means of raising revenue will be an auction, to be held at the MQHA

Entries will be accepted from Sept. 2nd to the start of the class but will be subject to a late fee. I. The MQHA Stallion Service Sale Yearling Longe Line Class will follow current NSBA Longe Line rules. 1. Entry fees, late fees and any added money, less no more than 10% for expenses, will determine the class purse. The entry fee will be due by September 1st of the calendar year. A late fee in addition to the entry fee will be assessed for entries received after September 1st and up to the day of the show. 3. A Stallion owner whose stallion's breeding has sold two years previously is eligible for one free entry in the SSS Yearling Longe Line class. All donated stallion breeding services will be treated equally (advertising, etc.). C. All Mare Owners who purchased a stallion service through the MQHA Michigan Stallion Service Sale auction are required to declare one mare bred before December 1st of the year of the auction. If declaration is not made by December 1st, but by January 1st following the year of the auction, a $25 penalty will be imposed for eligibility. If declaration is not made before January 1st following the year of the auction, the resulting foal will be considered ineligible for competition in the MQHA Stallion Service Sale Futurities. The year following the auction will be the extent of validity of all contracts purchased through the auction. D. All Mare Owners who purchased a stallion service through the MQHA Michigan Stallion Service Sale auction may declare additional mares (provided he/she is owner or lessee of record) for a fee of $25 per mare due by December 1st of the year of the auction or $125 due January 1st following the year of the auction. E. The stallion owner's entry is in the year following his/her donation (As per 2009 Sale, 2010 Futurity) provided the service sells. F. The MQHA Stallion Service Sale Committee must be notified in writing when a mare is open or a substitute mare is necessary. A copy of this notification must be sent to the MQHA Office and the SSS Director. G. A written notice will be returned to the mare owner and the stallion owner by the SSS Committee upon receipt of this notification in response to rule "E". H. MQHA MICHIGAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION Meeting of the Board of Directors March 8, 2016 Meeting Minutes President Tiffany Weitzel called a meeting of the MQHA Board of Directors to order at 7:04 p.m. The following Directors and staff were present: Trevor Barnes, Meggen Baynes, MacKenzie Chapman, Kathy Christensen, Sasha Glover, Megan Hirschman, Rob Kirkpatrick, Ted Meyer, Bob Milks, Monty Montgomery, Jacque Moody, Chris Perniciaro, Cathy Thaler, Morgan Warda, Tiffany Weitzel, and Kris Woroniecki. Excused from the meeting were: Jill Finley, Tom Powers and Jeff West. AGENDA: Bob Milks made a motion to approve the agenda as presented. Sasha Glover seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. MINUTES: Cathy Thaler made a motion to accept the February 16, 2016 Board of Directors minutes as presented. Monty Montgomery seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. REVIEW OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS: Treasurer, Megan Hirschman presented the financial statement for the period ending February, 2016. The total assets of the Association as of February 29, 2016 are listed at $347,521.77; the total liabilities at $118,201.09 and the total members' equity is listed at $229,320.68. The net income as of the end of February is listed at $18,685.29 compared to $2439.26 for the same period in 2015. Bob Milks made a motion to accept the February financial report as presented. Sasha Glover seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Megan stated that she felt that the financial statements look on par with where everything should be at this point in the year. TREASURER'S REPORT: Megan Hirschman reviewed the AR and AP reports. Monty Montgomery made a motion to accept the report as written. Bob Milks seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. The February, 2016 checks written report was presented. There were checks written totaling $24,199.71 for the month. Sasha Glover made a motion to approve the February checks written report. Bob Milks seconded. Motion passed with none opposed. Megan stated that she is aware that each committee is working to establish individual committee budgets. She indicated that this is a work in progress, and may take a few months. She explained that for some of the items that are paid out of the operating budget, she is www.MIQuarterHorse.com

working to break them out and give each committee an individual budget. She is working to identify actual costs attributed to each project, in the past many projects were paid out of general operating and not designated to a specific committee. The financial breakdown per committee will allow better accountability for committees, and allow for better planning in the future. The due diligence meeting will be rescheduled for May. Megan will work on a date and let the Board know. PRESIDENT'S REPORT: President Weitzel thanked Sasha Glover for his help setting up the excel spreadsheets for the Directors to do their budgets on. She also thanked Megan Hirschman for her help getting the budget process started which Tiffany acknowledged can be both tedious and confusing. She encouraged the Directors to ask questions. VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT: Vice President, Jacque Moody asked the Directors if they were able to open the excel template, confirming that everyone has excel. She asked if anyone was having trouble opening any other types of attachments. Bob Milks stated that he cannot open items from Jacque. Jacque will work to send them to Bob Milks in a different format whenever possible. OFFICE REPORT: Secretary, Kris Woroniecki presented a letter from the Michigan Great Lakes QHA requesting permission to run a silent benefit auction during the Harbor Classic. Bob Milks made a motion to allow Michigan Great Lakes to host their auction at the Harbor Classic in conjunction with MQHA. Megan Baynes seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. The details of the auction will need to be worked through with the Harbor Classic Committee. Kris also explained that the two shows that used to be the J&R QH Shows in Washington, MI have been released to AQHA. She recommended that MQHA move one date to be with the Great Lakes Classic as this would cause no disruption. Monty made a motion to move one date to the Great Lakes Classic and to hold the second date with AQHA for use in 2017. Meggen Baynes seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. COMMITTEE REPORTS AWARDS: Monty Montgomery stated that the 2015 Year End Awards budget was $30,164 and that for 2016, MQHA will be adding two rookie high points and reserve high points. Monty will need to request an increase in the budget to cover the cost of the additional awards. Megan Hirschman asked that all committee budget requests be done at the same time.

BENEFIT CLINIC: Trevor Barns reported that the clinic was the biggest success they've had in years. The multiple clinician format, with varied topics, drew a lot more interest from both riders and auditors. The plan is to continue with that format in 2017. The 2017 date is February 3-4. Taylor Fabus has already signed her portion of the contract, not sure if MQHA has yet. The judging contest continues to grow each year with 120+ participants this year. Trevor encourages MQHYA youth to participate, and the committee will look at a reduced rate for them to attend. Taylor and Trevor would entertain the idea of helping coach an MQHYA team as well, if there are youth interested. MQHA's role in this weekend will need to be to secure educational classroom session presenters. CONVENTION: Tiffany Weitzel stated that the Convention Committee is working to seek an alternate location and they are considering locations in both Grand Rapids and in Lansing. The committee continues to be very concerned about the costs associated with a move. EASTER SHOW: Monty Montgomery reported that everything is under control. He is hoping that the new format works and is waiting to hear if a rule is passed at the AQHA Convention allowing halter to be shown to six judges at once, which would save at least an hour. FUNDRAISING: Bob Milks asked what the fundraising committee duties are and for some help getting started. Vice President Moody indicated that she would get some information to him and help him get started. FUTURITY: Futurity chair, Jacque Moody indicated that she would be taking ideas on the show format from the Easter show and determining what might be able to be implemented for the show in September. She also stated that the show has not had huge youth numbers and she would like to come up with a way to encourage additional attendance by the youth at the Great Lakes Classic. HARBOR CLASSIC: Co-chair Ted Meyer reported that the committee will be holding a conference call in the next week to discuss sponsorships, camping and awards. HARVEST CLASSIC: Meggen Baynes said that she is hoping to have a potato bar during the horse show. She also stated that the Michigan Great Lakes will have a silent auction. JOURNAL, FACEBOOK AND WEBSITE: Submitted by Cathy Thaler, Committee Chair Journal Kathy Christiansen and Tiffany Weitzel both provided me history regarding their management of the Journal. I have contacted the Journal publisher several times for additional MQHA Journal • May/June 2016 • 16

MQHA information with no response. In addition to needing information from the publisher, in reviewing the budget numbers there are several line items for which I need further explanation before completing the budget. For example, the largest journal expense is MQ Admin, which is more than the total printing expense. If the Journal is to survive in printed form, we need to analyze both sides of the balance sheet in great detail. There seems to be some concern regarding approaching the Journal publisher as she does so much for us with so little compensation. I am trying to be patient and respectful of her time constraints, but when she fails to respond to me regarding updates to the site or information we need moving forward, I'm not sure how to proceed. As a former business owner if I paid for a service I expected to get it. If we are paying her so little that she doesn't feel we are a priority, then both she and MQ should have a discussion regarding such. Website The Journal publisher is also responsible for updating the website. I have requested information regarding it as well with no response. Facebook Pages The Marketplace is really self-sufficient and does not require updating other than approving new members and removing/blocking any person/business that is inappropriate. The current number of members as of today is 5,749, up 325 from January 9, 2016. MQ's main Facebook page current number of “fans” as of today is 2,670, up 765 from January 9, 2016. Demographically, 87% of the page viewers are females, with 34% being 35-54 and 21% being 25-34. By far the largest reach for posts are photos/articles about members and information regarding showing (i.e. Show bills, educational posts, AQHA information). To add value to our Facebook page, these statistics should be considered when planning/sharing posts. Responding in a timely manner to "fan" questions is also key to managing this page. No budget has been established for the Facebook pages in the past, but we may want to add a small budget to allow for promoting the page. MEMBERSHIP AND PUBLICITY: Submitted by Kathy Christensen, Committee Chair MHC Expo – Coordinated volunteers to work the MQHA booth Saddle-Up Magazine – renewed cover sponsor for March edition, reviewed ½ page adds for future editions, posted MQHA shows on Saddle Up calendar $395 www.MIQuarterHorse.com

GoHorseShow.com and GoMag – renewed purchase of 6 pages and tile for website. Includes 10 Certificates for GoMag. Listed Easter Show sponsors on Showbill and emailed to Gohorseshow.com for posting. $770 AQHA.com – corrected post for MQHA Convention. Will work with AQHA to ensure all future posts have correct information. Sent Thank You Cards to exiting Directors, expressing appreciation for their years of service to MQHA. Creating a detailed list of this committee's responsibilities including contacts and time frames. Requesting approval of 2016 budget of $2265.00 This would include current expenses of $395 for Saddle Up, $770 for GoMag. Additionally, $700 for member appreciation token purchase and $400 for printing and miscellaneous expenses. Currently in the process of redoing recruiting/ publicity page card. Previously known as the tri-fold. Kathy then reminded the Board of the discussion about ordering MQHA keychains. Megan Hirschman made a motion to approve up to $800 for the purchase of keychains to be given out by the membership and publicity committee. Cathy Thaler seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. NOMINATIONS: Morgan McCarthy Warda stated that it is her goal to encourage each committee chairperson to get one person to serve on each committee that is not a MQHA Board member. QUEEN: Kathy Christensen explained that the Queen Application has been updated on the website. She also has two additional people on the committee with her who are not MQHA Directors. RULES AND CONSTITUTION: Cathy Thaler explained that during a meeting prior to this meeting, there was discussion about the job description for the vice president elect and the job of the executive committee. Megan Hirschman made a motion to approve the working copy of the job descriptions. Seconded by Sasha Glover. Motion passed with none opposed. To be added to Article IV, Section 2 - Officers (Not sure if this will stay here or be moved to MQHA Organization Responsibility and Job Chart Definitions, page 28 in old document) Add second paragraph to read Officers of the Michigan Quarter Horse Association are required to:

• Attend and participate in all meetings of the Board of Directors. • Be informed about the Association's mission, services, policies, and programs. • Assist the Board of Directors in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities. • Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board, committee meetings, and conference calls. • Attend the annual MQHA Convention. • Annually review and vote on the Association's budget. • Contribute to a review of the Executive Secretary. • Prepare and present information at meetings on behalf of the Association as needed. Working Description Vice President Elect (maybe on page 11 of new document?) This includes the duty of reviewing and proposing updates to the Business Plan annually, but again not sure if that will be here or in the MQHA Organization Responsibility and Job Chart Definitions, page 28 in old document) Article IV, Section 5 - Vice President Elect (I think. I don't have the new version so not sure of the numbering) The Vice President Elect shall perform the duties of the President or Vice President in the absence of those officers, either at regular or special board meetings, or for Association business. The Vice President Elect shall serve as the successor to the Vice President. To prepare to ascend to the Vice President office, the Vice President Elect shall participate in all Executive Committee meetings and decisions. In addition, both the President and the Vice President will mentor this person by sharing duties, information, and providing shadowing opportunities to ensure the succession plan transitions are smooth and seamless. In the event that a vacancy occurs simultaneously in the offices of both the President and Vice President, the Vice President Elect shall ascend to the office of President. SHOW APPROVAL: Rob Kirkpatrick suggested that for the MQHA owned shows, the show approval committee do the patterns. SUMMER SERIES: Sasha Glover explained that the contract for the fairgrounds has been signed. The portable stalls are on hold with the rental company. The showbill is complete with the schedule rearranged. YOUTH: submitted by Jeff West, Committee Chair Next Youth Board Meeting will be held on 3/25 at around 7:00. We would like to have Pizza and pop and use fundraising dollars to cover this. Do we need approval from the Board to do this? MQHA Journal • May/June 2016 • 17

MQHA Fundraising update: We only have 6 packets of 50 tickets left to be signed out. To date we have two completed packets with 100 tickets sold turned in (Emme Lantis and Elizabeth West). We have a fundraiser planned for the Easter show and it will be an Easter Egg hunt. We are requesting gift certificates from MQ that can only be used to cover MQ show expenses. We figure if we can get $300 from MQ we could raise $1000 and our net profits will be $700. Audrey Barnes, Miller Lantis & Emme Lantis are running this with the help from their parents. Yes Conference: We have one confirmed person interested Cassidy Jensen. A few others said they would be interested, but we wondered if they were thinking the trip was all expense paid. We are not offering any assisted funding with this, as we would like direction from the MQ Board on how to handle this going forward. Any thoughts from the board would be a great help. Jeff West will be running the point total for each class differently for World Show this year than in previous years. He has asked the youth of Michigan to let him know who has already qualified in classes and what classes they plan on wanting a state spot. He does not want the MQ office staff to have to spend hours and days after each show feeding excel spreadsheets,

when the reality is that each year we have had open spots. He will have a n excel spreadsheet that will be updated with each class and who has nationally qualified and who is ranked 1-6 in each class with the approved criteria. This will be the same for NYATT. There are three Youth who have requested hardship applications out of Michigan. 2016 youth who have hardship application in to Michigan – None Megan Hirschman recommended that the discussion regarding financial support of the YES conference goes back to the youth board to determine if the youth want to spend money sending someone to the YES conference. Sasha Glover will help communicate this information and bring something back to the board for the next meeting. Monty Montgomery made a motion to provide the youth with $300 worth of MQHA gift certificates which will be charged to the youth, to be used for the Easter egg fundraiser. Bob Milks seconded. Motion passed with none opposed. Megan Hirschman made a motion to approve a silent auction at the Easter show, held by the youth with proceeds split between youth and the year-end awards committees. Meggen Baynes seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. OLD BUSINESS: MSU Covered Arena – Megan Hirschman indicated that the finance committee is looking into the MSU Covered Arena and

they don't want to over pledge with MSU. A final number can be obtained once the budgets are finalized. NEW BUSINESS: Monty Montgomery made a motion to approve the following 2016 Futurity Rule Change and to insert the rule in the 2016 Rule Book. Cathy Thaler seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. SECTION 1 – MQHA BREEDERS' FUTURITY GENERAL PROVISIONS 4. Yearlings: Yearlings may be shown at halter as follows: open and/or amateur mares, open and/or amateur stallions, and open and/or amateur geldings. Yearlings may also be shown in open and/or non-pro yearling longe line, which will be considered performance classes. Open western longe line, open HUS prospect longe line and/or non pro western/hus combined longe line. A motion to adjourn was made at 9:36 p.m. by Bob Milks. Monty Montgomery seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. ELECTRONIC BOARD CORRESPONDENCE: MQHA rules now allow for electronic voting when necessary. Need to tune up your performance in pattern classes? by Taylor Fabus, MSU Extension With horse show season upon us, let’s focus on having our most successful year yet! Success means reaching goals, improving your personal performance, adding new skills, developing consistency and don’t forget, enjoying the ride. Isn’t that why we do this “horse show thing?” Here we’ll focus on my top five tips to help improve your performance in the very popular pattern classes, such as showman-ship, equitation and horsemanship. 1. Study the pattern First things first, you better know your pattern! It’s becoming more common for show management to share the pattern with exhibitors days or weeks before the show. Even if the pattern is only available the morning of the show, committing your patterns to memory is your first and most important step towards success. Be sure to not only look at the diagram/ drawing of the pattern, but also read the descriptive words provided. If you feel there is any conflicts or areas of confusion, let the show management know. They’ll clear up any confusion with the judge. The judge may even ask at the beginning of your class if you have any questions – use this opportunity if you have any lingering con-fusion. 2. Map out your path Many of us are visual learners. I’ve found that the absolute best way to first practice your pattern is on your own feet, without your horse. I will set up a smaller version of the

2016 AQHA/MQHA SHOWS

pattern, complete with cones, and “perform” it myself. You don’t need to ride your horse the first time you are learning the pattern. Allow your horse the rest and save him the confusion. While you “trot” out your pattern, you can begin to plan your path of travel, including which side of the cones you’re supposed to be on, distance from the cones, as well as where trans-itions and maneuvers are required. Once you’ve successfully mapped out your course of action on your own, you can now add the equine element. The first few times I practice the pattern, I will simply walk or trot my horse through the required path of travel, removing the required transitions and maneuvers. This will help you plan your path in the arena without over prac-ticing, which we’ll discuss later. 3. Plan your transitions One of the keys to any successful show ring performance is found right in the transitions. Transitions show the horse’s athleticism as well as the communication between horse and rider. A well-practiced team will have prompt, collected transitions with subtle cues. In a pattern, a rider should plan when to ask for each transition, which will differ for each horse. Knowing how long it takes for your horse to pick up a canter will help you transition right where it’s called for in the pattern. In addition, this will set the pair up for success for whatever the next element is in the pattern. 4. Show off your strong suits Each skilled rider will know both their personal as well as their horse’s strong suits. As a showman, it is your role to high-light your areas of strength while of course minimizing your areas of weakness. For

example, does your horse have a nice trot, but struggles with pivoting? Or is he a weak loper, but has a great stop? Plan your pattern so that you provide extra support for your horse during a difficult challenge while being sure you allow the judge to see your strengths in their full glory. 5. Don’t over practice I’m sure you’ve heard practice makes perfect, but just be sure you don’t over practice your pattern, especially while you’re at the show. Even a new show horse can easily start to anticipate parts of the pattern once they’ve performed it a few times. Use the tricks described in tip two above to be sure you get enough practice opportunities, without over doing it. While at home and at the show, I will practice riding around cones without asking my horse to perform any maneuvers or trans-itions at the cones. Horses often associate cones with a pattern maneuver, so riding past them will help your horse dissociate the two and prevent anticipation. One other way to be sure you get enough practice without getting burnt out is to practice the pieces of the pattern separ-ately. Before performing the entire pattern, be sure you’ve tuned your horse up on each element and transition separately. This is a very common practice technique of a suc-cessful showman. Once each element is tuned, you can then perform the pattern as described. I hope you’ll find these five tips useful and that they help you have a successful show season ahead! MQHA

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hi everyone! Summer is ofcially in full swing and I couldn’t be happier after the cold spring. The MQHA board has been very busy planning shows, working on budgets and continuing to make MQHA the premier Quarter Horse association to be a member of. As we get into the busiest months of showing, please remember etiquette and courtesies. We are all at the shows to have fun and be competitive, but it’s much more enjoyable for everyone if we treat all exhibitors, parents, volunteers and staff with respect. We are faced with many challenges at every show and have the power to make decisions that have a positive impact on the people around us. Where do you hear the most complaints and concerns? Most would agree the make-up pen. From early morning longing and pattern practice to crowded pleasure warm ups. Lead by example, if you see someone having trouble give them some space. We have all cut someone off or bumped into someone unintentionally, when in doubt, just say “I’m sorry.” And communicate, let someone know you are approaching or if they are to close politely ask them to please give you more space. And don’t forget the new folks. Our association is growing by leaps and bounds and I’m sure there are people you’ve seen week in and week out and have no idea who they are. I challenge you to introduce yourself to someone you don’t know at the next event you attend. Enjoy the summer, good luck showing, and don’t forget your sunscreen! Tiffany Weitzel, MQHA President

MQHA By Cat Guenther, Youth Reporter For this journal’s youth report, I presented the question “How do you view the future of the youth role in the quarter horse association?” There are many different views and opinions on this topic, but I had the chance to hear from a few different voices. Rebecca Lewis-Kenyon commented on the topic via social media, “I'd like to see some type of incentives to get more youth in. The Michigan paint association has a new program for true rookie riders, if they've had no points in any association APHA, AQHA, etc. they can show rookie classes only for free. They still pay all other fees.” Rebecca is planning for her daughter to start showing with the quarter horse association in the future and would like to see more rookie classes added. As well as Rebecca, Ashlynn Blamer commented on this topic via social media, “I would like to see more upcoming youth be interested in training horses and not just showing. They are the trainers of tomorrow.” Ashlynn stressed the importance of hard work and how it translates into the show pen. Kylie Klotz, a current youth member, also contributed her view of the youth association “I view the future of the youth role quite seriously. The youth are a large part of the QH association, and should continue to be for a long time. The youths make a lot happen within the association, and if we keep nice, dedicated youths in the association, it would be in our favor.” Lastly, Katherine West, also a current youth member commented “I believe that the youth are a big part of our association's future because we are the new generation of MQHA members, and we are going to be the ones who will decide what we want to do to make this association better someday.” To sum it up, the youth are our future!

MQHA Spring is finally here! Hello MQHA Members - I hope this finds everyone in good spirits and that your spring projects, whether they are taking finals, finally getting to some housework, or breaking out a new two-year-old colt, are going well! The first few months of the year have been pretty busy for MQHA, and myself! First, our annual convention and banquet was held in Lansing where we awarded the top point earners throughout the state. Congratulations again to all of the award winners! I really enjoyed convention this year, since I got to see so many faces that I’ve met over the past few months, and for that I am grateful. And I’ve gotten the gracious chance to meet so many new people since! I hope most people got out to the annual tack sale that is held in February, and were successful with their buying and selling. Thank you to all the vendors and sellers who participated. It was a great weekend with numerous informative clinics as well. In March I attended the Michigan Horse Council’s Stallion Expo - what a blast! I got to meet the Michigan High School Rodeo Queen, Mackenzie, some adorably irresistible baby rabbits, and my favorite, more MQHA members! We advertised our wonderful association, as well as passed out information on AQHA and the horses we love. I had a great time walking around the Expo with some of the youth in our association and meeting the animals at the petting zoo provided by Northfork Outback, and the other breeds of horses in attendance. Once again MQHA put on another amazing Easter EggStravaganza show at the end of March. I know I for one was craving a horse show, and that weekend did not disappoint! Thank you to all who came out, the MQHA show staff, and for all of the sponsors for this show. Easter weekend in East Lansing is always my favorite way to start off the show season! Up next we have our slate of summer shows - The Spartan Spectacular has www.MIQuarterHorse.com

been held April 29th until May 1st, the Great Lakes Spring Circuit May 13th until May 15th and the Summer Series over Memorial Day weekend. The 2016 Harbor Classic show will be upon us very soon after that, where it will be time to crown a new Queen, Princess and Jr. Princess. I hope everyone has safe travels this summer to these events and any others you’ll be attending. Let’s make it a great show season! I’d like to part with thanks to the many sponsors and individuals who have sponsored this contest, and my journey as Queen. My parents, grandparents, MQHA, the previous Queens for their guidance, Kathy Christensen, Sandy House, Warren, Laurie & Corinne English, Jack & Nancy Christensen, Anna Marie Cooper, Millbrook Tack, Lope for Hope & Renee Kozlowski, Bodacious Cowgirl & Wendy Cook, Kathy Williams Tails, Chris Frantz & Chris’ Custom Creations, Tiffany Weitzel, Tom Moore, The Wire Horse, Sharon Merchant, Lexi Heney, Mary Beth Hegedus, Jim & Joni Roth, Cowgirl Rocz, Closet Space, Biggby Coffee & Jen Dolby, Cassidy’s Casuals & Brenda Arnold, Audrey Winter & 3M, Jeanne Norcross, Doris Perniciaro, Debbie Wadds, LouAnn Thompson, and Bonnie Bailey.
