WOMAN’S LAKE
PLUS SHORT
(FRAUENSEE) Dir: Zoltan Paul, Germany, 2012, DCP, 85 min German with English subtitles
Earthy and capable Rosa is a professional fisherwoman who spends her days silently travelling through the peaceful waterways of the picturesque hinterlands north of Berlin. As guardian of the lakes, she can be found policing and protecting the surrounding landscape when she’s not casting her nets. Rosa’s lover Kirsten is a successful architect who lives in a lakeside bungalow, yet seems an odd match for the chilled Rosa. While Rosa is ready to settle into the relationship, Kirsten seems uneasy about committing, and uptight about anything that distracts from her business interests. Their world is upended by the arrival of Olivia and Evi, a brash, sexually adventurous young lesbian couple who are on a study break from Berlin and sailing through the lakes. Both Rosa and Kirsten react differently to the sexual advances of the young women, and their presence threatens the already precarious relationship of the older women. (LD) Melbourne Premiere
