GENERAL INFORMATION

01. OVERVIEW Le Cercle complex was established in 2007. Before that, its premises were occupied on one side by the Utopia restaurant, a gastronomic innovator rooted in the arts of gastronomy and wine tasting, and on the other by the Gallery Rouje, a true Mecca of the independent arts and music scenes in Quebec City. It is from this fertile home of creators, entrepreneurs, cultural managers and inspired public that the desire was born to practice an art of dining that would go well beyond established standards.

/\/\/\/ \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\//\/\/ The project of Le Cercle is an experience in good living, offering visitors the opportunity to revitalize themselves in a variety of ways. Day after day, in the act of sharing wine and food with you, serving you art in all its different faces, Le Cercle regenerates, transforms and is nourished through your contributions.

Le Cercle should be seen as an island of change, a daily living space where distinction can flourish. A framework that is versatile enough to make it possible to attempt acts that re-humanize the social connection “in situ and live.

MUSIC, CONCERT, LIVING PERFORMANCES, MOVIES,

RESTAURANT, DIGITAL ART, WINE TASTING, PHILOSOPHY, VISUAL ART, LITERATURE, HUMOUR, THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE,

LE CERCLE COMPLEX IS A MEETINGS SPACE THAT HOUSES MANY DISCIPLINES FROM VARIOUS ARTISTIC CURRENTS. THE MERGING OF THESE DIFFERENT DYNAMICS STIMULATES

autant la créativité du public, AND THE STAFF ON SITE, AS IT DOES THE ARTISANS AND ARTISTS THEMSELVES.

Since opening, it is clear that both Le Cercle’s affluence and influence are constantly progressing. Why this continued success? Among other things, our collaborators often point out our status as a public space and our strategic position at the centre of many local businesses. Their growing interest in wanting to work with us assures us of being able to accommodate a collective diversity.

The consistency of our alliances with the creative community allows us to develop a clientele that is loyal and curious. Their plurality is a reflection of the diversity of the programming, products and services we offer.

Antenne-A AND SU

CréatioN

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ At the centre of Le Cercle, the organizations Antenne-A and SU Création handle the arts and culture mandate. They are the main architects of the musical programming and the living, visual and digital arts initiatives. Other organizations like Get A Room!, le Festival d’été de Québec, le Festival Envol et Macadam, le Festival de Jazz de Québec, VOX, la Rotonde, le Mois Multi, le Carrefour international de théâtre, Spirafilm and le Festival de la Bande Dessinée francophone de Québec are some of the longtime partners we work with to present programming that represents many disciplines.

Symbiose

/\ /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\//\/\/ In addition, importation agency Symbiose Vins et cie is responsible for developing and refining our wine bar and sommelier activities. Le Cercle hosts many events presented by this growing agency. Its mission is to develop new standards of originality and quality in terms of sensory products and experiences that go hand in hand with Le Cercle’s cuisine. Because of a desire to make the richness of Quebec farm fresh food accessible to everyone, our chef builds relationships with many local suppliers. Thanks to this alliance, he develops tasty and comforting market cuisine. Emblematic of a crossroad that intersects the arts and business, many companies in new technologies related to knowledge or culture gather at Le Cercle for informal meetings, conferences or business meals.

03. LE CERCLE:

ITS SPACES AND ITS SERVICES

A) A RESTAURANT and a WINE

/\/\/\/\ /\/\/\/\/\ The restaurant in Le Cercle complex is a cozy spot where we gather to share unpretentious and tasty cuisine of the best quality that is affordable.

The dining room has a minimalist design, open ceilings and long bar situated in front of an impressive glass wine cellar. The restaurant is equipped with a 12-meter panoramic projection screen, which is used as a presentation tool or to create visual and digital art.

Our chef and his team concoct a varied menu showcasing fresh seasonal products. With a desire to offer the highest quality products, we make almost all of the food served, from starters to dessert. In addition, we work with a constant concern to present and provide a showcase for local food industry artisans. Restaurant service is provided by a brigade of professionals, mostly sommeliers, who are happy to share their contagious passion for the wines of the world with you. Our extensive cellar of 2,000 bottles alone confirms how serious we are about our wine bar.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ Le Cercle complex houses an alternative showcase that aims to promote emerging talent. We offer a monthly program of artists from Quebec, Canada and all over the world. The works are installed in a way that generates aesthetics that visitors can interact with in an uncommon setting

Managed by SU CrĂŠation, these spaces go beyond simple presentation and are organized to create a communion between art and space, and are seen as a journey to be discovered. Striving for transdisciplinarity, we work to promote dialogue between different artistic media, whether it is architecture, illustration, graphic design, visual and digital arts, performance, photography or graffiti.

4 DEDICATED SPACES FOR ARTISTIC CREATION

30 EXHIBITIONS EVERY YEAR

CLOSE TO 10,000 PEOPLE PASS THROUGH THESE SPACES MONTHLY

ARTISTIC EVENTS

THAT BENEFIT FROM ALL OUR MEDIA PLATFORMS

4 presentation and exhibition spaces can be inhabited by artists who want to collaborate with us. Artists may choose to use the entire space or one of its parts. In the process of public art, some of the works are created specifically for the space, which allows the artist to put their vision to the test as it encounters the different currents that exist within Le Cercle. Depending on the time of day, the chosen space and context, the artistic visions benefit from Le Cercle’s different ambiances.

01

The Gallery in the basement of Le Cercle is vast and uncluttered and ideal for artists who want to shape, transform and adapt the space to what their works demand.

02

The Audiovisual Gallery qand its various video projection surfaces include six giant screens, a console and a sound system that can create custom sound productions.

03

The Mezzanine, on the performance hall side has a brick wall of almost fifty feet. This space is well suited for classic wall hanging, and is a great showcase for photography, illustration and painting exhibitions.

04

The Aquarium is the central space, and the junction between Le Cercle’s two other spaces. Major intersection and center point within the walls, it also gives out onto the street. Its size and cube shape are well suited for installations.

04. AN ESSENTIAL MEDIA POINT OF VIEW

cULTURAL PURPOSE Central Nervous System of St-Roch Josianne Desloges, Le Soleil, October 29, 2011.

“Almost 20 years ago, the project to revitalize Saint-Roch, which aimed to give back the neighbourhood its cultural purpose was launched. Gradually, organizations, businesses, media, artists, merchants and restaurateurs settled in, but a vital piece was missing: a place where art, expression, nightlife and fine cuisine could converge. Le Cercle, which celebrates its fourth anniversary this year, embodies the heart and voice of the neighbourhood.”

Le Cercle Seen by The New York Times 36 Hours in Quebec City. Noah Rosenberg, New York Times, October 13, 2011

“For an artistically inspired night out, there’s Le Cercle, a sleek industrial-modern spaceborn of a 2009 merger between a wine bar and an adjacent performance venue. It offers live indie, rock, dance and folk music, and films, comedy shows and theater. The spot also features local art and video projections, a 2,000 bottle wine cellar and a kitchen, ideal for late-night snacking, that serves dishes like chilled smoked mussels.”

Who Wants to Play Sommelier? Wine Chronicle. Vanessa Bell, CHYZ 94.3, November 17, 2010

“The assembled choices were revealed to us. From the three samples we were given, we had to create our own wine by using different proportions. [...] I met people who were as passionate and curious as I am, I discovered a wealth of information while having fun and moreover, I discovered it with the help of a bubbly sommelier who was relevant and refreshing.”

Animated Brunches

Le Cercle: Open to families. Stéphanie Bois-Houde, Le Soleil, October 10, 2010

“Every second weekend, Le Cercle animates a brunch that reproduces the spirit of childhood breakfasts in front of the TV [...] Except here, it’s Quebec creators, through a collaboration with the Quebec Francophone Comics Festival, who take over the screen. A big screen! Le Cercle: Open to the families!”

A Musical and Visual Program Within a Restaurant Silence Gives Consent. Sophie Marcotte, Voir-Québec, June 17, 2010

“Already excellent, its cuisine (Le Cercle) has been raised a notch or two. So much so that the dishes, executed with outstanding mastery, leave us speechless. [...] At Le Cercle, gastronomy and art are hand in glove; we concluded the meal by watching a few silent animated short films projected on the wall next to us. [...] Merging is a term that perfectly summarizes Le Cercle, where young hipsters and thirty-somethings with laptops rub shoulders with businessmen in ties with the utmost of ease, and where fine cuisine is served by waiters with tattooed arms ... The final word? Bravo.”

La robe blanche by Pol Pelletier at Le Cercle

Sylvie Nicolas, le Devoir, June 6, 2011

cu riO uS

“There were many crowding chaotically at Le Cercle on June 3 to attend this special presentation of La robe blanche by Pol Pelletier. She arrived from the back of the room, in white face, a top hat, black silhouette, red shoes and gloved hands. She discreetly made her way to the bare stage before easily addressing the waiting hearts with a few words of introduction to her work in progress, a project titled voie/voix de naître.”

In the autumn the Antenne-A Festival presents a week of discovery concerts, conferences and performances.

Dominique Goulet, former Programming Director of the Festival d’été de Québec. January 2010

“They are always one step ahead of trends in terms of programming. Antenne-A lets us reach an audience that would not necessarily come to our general public performances.”

The Pecha Kucha Non-conferences: An Evening of 20 Images x 20 Seconds Networking or Happening? Raymond Poirier, Voir-Québec, September 24, 2009

“In the world of networking, it could be said that Pecha Kucha (chit chat) is a small revolution or reinvention. [...] Created in 2003 in Tokyo, this new kind of networking concept has emerged in the field of creation and design around the world. Thanks to AntenneA, it has now arrived in Quebec City.”

A Remarkable Launch

The Cream of the Danes. François Gariépy, VoirQuébec, October 2007

“A full house on Thursday at Le Cercle, formerly Rouje, with Trentemøller visiting for the first time, a concert that will forever mark the splendid space that has a promising future. And after local hero Millimetrik opened the show with the help of his laptop, Trentemøller came on stage accompanied by a guitarist and a drummer to support each note of his mesmerizing music. Visibly pleased with the response from the public (with a packed house in attendance), the Dane praised the crowd’s enthusiasm on several occasions.”
