Another year has passed and with it comes the end of my term representing the MPSTMA. I’d like to thank the membership for a great year and the opportunity to serve as president of this association. Continuing efforts of many individuals and groups have helped advance the Minnesota Chapter of STMA. The MPSTMA Annual Meeting and Board Elections will take place on Thurs., Jan. 14 at 10:45 a.m. during the Northern Green Expo. We have a great slate of candidates and I look forward to Jay Stadler, Grounds Manager at Carleton College, leading this group through the upcoming year. Also on Jan. 14, a Vendor Appreciation breakfast will take place at Key’s Cafe in Minneapolis between 6-7 a.m. All MPSTMA members are invited to attend. Our 2016 event schedule in shaping up, mark your calendars for the following: + Spring Workshop at the University of Northwestern - March 9 + Tour-on-Wheels at Toro’s Tomah Plant in Wisconsin- June 29 + Chapter Clash in Minnesota - July 15-16 + UM / MTGF Field Day at TROE Center - August 11 + Fall Workshop - September (TBD) + Community Service Project - October (TBD) A BIG thank you to my fellow board members for their dedication to working out the details and taking their time to make this whole thing work. Both Jeff and Scott Turtinen play an integral role in the success of our group. By serving as Executive Secretary and the MPSTMA’s business office, they set up events, organize the newsletters and tie up loose ends. I thank you for your unending efforts. I look forward to seeing a large Minnesota contingent in San Diego at the STMA National Conference January 19-22. But, before that, I hope this new year finds you with an opportunity to join us at the MPSTMA Annual Meeting. Beginning in February, we will begin a monthly e-mail newsletter called “Ground Level News From MPSTMA.” We will print one issue of MPSTMA NEWS annually. On a final note, 2016 membership dues are due by Feb. 10 and more information on our Spring Workshop will be forwarded to you soon. Sincerely,

MPSTMA ANNUALLY PERFORMS A COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT IN MINNESOTA
Community Service Project in St. Paul Will Benefit Kids Under 10 Years Old On October 21, a perfect fall day, MPSTMA members performed a Community Service Project at Parkway Fields in St. Paul. Parkway Fields are a group of four baseball fields on private land. The two original fields were built 60 years ago. The third field, with help from a MPSTMA Community Service Project, was built nine years ago. This year, a fourth field for 5-10 year olds was built. Thanks in large part to a couple of MPSTMA Commercial member companies: Shwaders Sports Turf Management and Minnesota Sod Company - good people who had the right equipment and helped make MPSTMA's role in this Community Service Project possible. Ben Boeding CSFM, Mike McDonald CSFM and the Shwaders Sports Turf Management team of Adam Farrell, Kyle Larson and Steve Nielsen dealt with homeplate, the pitching rubber and the bases. They measured and anchored them into their proper spots. Volunteers helped pinch together the sod as it was laid in the outfield by Minnesota Sod Company's sod rolling machine. Shwaders Sports Turf Management representative Adam Farrell said they were “happy to assist Parkway Little League with the construction of their new addition to the complex. Parkway representative Ken Sabota invited us down to the construction site as Semple Excavating was still shaping the sub grade to take a look at what was needed to get the field ready for the Community Service Project. From that day forward, we stayed in contact with Ken and Semple Excavating and their progress with sub grade, dugout construction and getting fence posts in the ground. Once Semple was completed with sub grade and brought in the proper amount of soil and AgLime, Shwaders was hired to complete final laser grading of the outfield soil prior to the Community Service Project. After a couple days, we had the outfield completely laser graded and

ready for the irrigation to be installed. Once the irrigation was installed, we came back to touch things up and prepare the infield to be graded the day of the Community Service Project. On the morning of CSP, we laser graded the entire infield skin area as sod was being unloaded and starting to be installed. Once the infield was laser graded after a couple of hours, we assisted Ben Boeding CSFM, with the installation of bases, pitcher's rubber and home plate. “We were very happy to be able to be a part of this project and look forward to future CSPs!” (Continued on Page 4)

Volunteers then came and and worked all day to finish the job at Parkway Little League Fields in St. Paul. The “after” photo is pictured at the upper right. This field will be used by 5-10 year-olds and is surrounded by three privately-owned, regulation Little League fields. MPSTMA volunteers helped build one of the other fields on this site nine years ago.
