HARISH SHANKAR

NAOHISA FURUSAWA

Hailing from Malaysia, Harish Shankar enjoys a growing presence on the international stage. Prize winner at the 6th International Jorma Panula Conducting Competition, Shankar has conducted the Jena Philharmonics, the Leipzig Symphony Orchestra, Staatsphilharmonie Braunschweig, Orquesta Sinfónica de Trujillo, the North Czech Philharmonic, Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra, Vaasa City Orchestra, Jyväskylä Symphony Orchestra and Manchester Camerata. His debut with the Hallé Orchestra received high critical acclaim. With an active voice in the media, Shankar has been featured in ‘Classical Music Magazine’ and interviewed on BBC Radio 3.

Naohisa Furusawa has been a member of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) double bass section since January 2003. Born in Tokyo in 1973, he started to play the violin when he was four years old and later joined his junior high school orchestra as a double bass player at age 12. His first conducting experiences were with this school orchestra. Later, he studied double bass with Prof. Nobuo Shiga, piano and conducting with Prof. Kazue Kamiya at Tokyo’s Toho Gakuen School of Music.

A pianist by training, Shankar received initial piano lessons at the age of six with Penny Kam. He continued his studies with Loo Bang Hean before being accepted into the class of Konstanze Eickhorst at the Conservatoire of Lübeck. He went on to study conducting with Eiji Oue and was subsequently invited to Peru where he lead projects for El Sistema, an award-winning social programme that aims to bring children from all walks of life together with music. Shankar completed his Master’s degree in Conducting at the conservatoire of Weimar, Germany under Gunter Kahlert. He has also received mentorship from Sir Mark Elder, Clark Rundell and Mark Heron. Masterclasses with Paavo Järvi, Nicolás Pasquet and Leonid Grin round up his studies. He has served as assistant conductor to many renowned artists including Sir Andrew Davis, Eckehard Stier, Juanjo Mena and Vasily Petrenko. Currently residing in Manchester, Shankar is the Junior Fellow of Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music.

Furusawa has performed as a double bass player with the NHK Symphony, Yomiuri Nihon Symphony, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony and several other orchestras, under the director of many conductors, including Seiji Ozawa, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Holst Stein, Lorin Maazel, Herbert Blomstedt, Pierre Boulez and Valery Gergiev. In 1998, Furusawa was awarded a scholarship from the Cultural Affairs Agency of Japan to study double bass at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. He has conducted Beethoven’s 9th Symphony five times with Tokyo’s MAX Philharmonic Orchestra. He also conducted Mahler’s 2nd Symphony with the MAX Philharmonic to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. He has conducted many young musician ensembles, including MPO’s Encounter Training Ensemble, and the Miri Tutti Project in East Malaysia as part of MPO’s Education and Outreach programme.

BEETHOVEN Violin Concerto

BRUCKNER Symphony No. 4

MAHLER Symphony No. 1

BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 6 “Pastoral”

Masterpieces by two towering figures of the mid 19th century adorn this programme. Making his MPO debut in Schumann’s Piano Concerto is French pianist David Fray whose playing has been described by critics as “exquisite, imaginative, and virtuosic”. Bruckner’s best-known symphony, the Fourth, inhabits a sound world of celestial majesty, vast time scale, far-flung sonic splendour, a leisurely pace, awesome silences and engaging themes of great breadth.

Internationally acclaimed baritone Matthias Goerne sings Gustav Mahler’s intimate, deeply personal songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth’s Magic Horn). Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 “Titan” – at once mystical, playful, earthy and transcendent – offers an exhilarating journey into the human experience and a heroic conclusion to the concert.

Winner of the Queen Elisabeth (2009) and Yehudi Menuhin Competitions (2008), Ray Chen is among the most compelling young violinists on the world stage today. Chen plays Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, music of sublime beauty and regarded as one of the greatest in the repertory. To open the programme we hear Beethoven’s King Stephen Overture and to close, one of his best-known symphonies, the idyllic Pastoral (No. 6).

The prominent role provided by the organ, the ‘King of Instruments’, provides an additional measure of imposing sonority. Regarded as one of the great French symphonies, it also boasts a good measure of charm, elegance and consummate craftsmanship. Debussy’s sensuous tone poem about the amorous musing of a woodland creature (a faun) and Poulenc’s witty Sinfonietta complete the programme.

BERLIOZ Symphonie fantastique

MENDELSSOHN Symphony No. 4

Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique is truly fantastic, not only for the fantasy world it depicts but for the composer’s use of the orchestra as a giant virtuoso instrument for the conductor to play upon. This endlessly fascinating symphony is filled to the brim with myriad orchestral effects and tonal colours, making it one of the most popular works in the repertory. Orchestral mastery is evident also in excerpts from Wagner’s final opera, Parsifal, music of mystery and magic that transports the listener to another dimension.

Roberto Abbado’s programme opens with Berlioz’s dazzling portrayal of Roman festivities and closes with Mendelssohn’s beloved Italian Symphony. In between, we hear a violin concerto by one of Italy’s bestknown composers, Nicolò Paganini, whose music for violin is known for its technical wizardry and virtuosic flair. Luigi Boccherini too was Italian but spent much of his career in Spain, where he received inspiration for his Night Music of the Streets of Madrid.

English conductor Mark Wigglesworth and Serbian violinist Nemanja Radulović join forces in Tchaikovsky’s super-popular Violin Concerto, music that is by turns hyperemotional and passionate, reflective and introspective, hence in many ways reflecting the life of the man who wrote it. Stravinsky’s Petrushka, another audience favourite, is a wildly colourful ballet score filled with picturesque details – some riotously flamboyant, some exquisitely beautiful – depicting a puppet show at a carnival scene in a 19th century Russian village. Fairytale music by Ravel opens the programme.

The featured work on this concert is a symphonic synthesis of Wagner’s monumental Tristan and Isolde, a tale of searing passion set in legendary time. The Magic Flute is bound to enchant you! RM380 RM270 RM 210 RM150

The featured work is Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals in which he depicts the mighty roars of the lion (a little scary!), lumbering elephants, onagers (fastest horses in the world), a graceful swan and much more. The MPYO presents two of the world’s most beloved serenades; one for winds and one for strings. Dvořák’s Serenade is one of his sunniest, most enjoyable compositions. Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings is his tribute to Mozart, a thoroughly delightful work in which Tchaikovsky at times imitates the style of his favourite composer. A bold and brassy fanfare by Dukas opens the programme.

Music by Dmitri Shostakovich opens and closes this concert by the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. The composer’s Fifth Symphony is the featured work. It is not only the most popular of Shostakovich’s fifteen symphonies but one of the most popular symphonies of the entire twentieth century. The same composer’s impressive Festive Overture opens the concert, followed by a lovely musical landscape of the Bohemian countryside, Smetana’s Moldau.

Resident conductor, Harish Shankar leads the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in Sibelius’ grandest and most popular symphony, the Second, which takes the listener from a gentle beginning to towering symphonic strength.

DEWAN FILHARMONIK PETRONAS

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) is home to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) and is Malaysia’s first concert hall dedicated to classical music. Located at the PETRONAS Twin Towers, it was officially opened on 17 August 1998 by the patron of the MPO, Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali and former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. Designed by Cesar Pelli, the hall takes its inspiration from the traditional shoe-box shape of the great 19th century European concert halls with the magnificent Klais Pipe Organ providing a spectacular backdrop to the hall’s stage. The hall contains 920 seats, including box seats, corporate suites and a royal suite. Acoustics experts Kirkegaard and Associates have incorporated unique acoustical devices into its design to maximize the hall’s natural qualities. Celebrating its 18th anniversary in 2016, DFP plays an integral part in the music and cultural landscape of Malaysia and the city of Kuala Lumpur. It continues to enthrall listeners as it has done since the day it first opened its doors. In addition to stimulating and enriching concerts by the MPO, world renowned orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, BBC Symphony and Vienna Symphony have performed in this hall. Beyond classical music, DFP has hosted prominent ensembles of other music genres such as the Count Basie Orchestra, Yellowjackets, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mezzoforte, Pink Martini and Gotan Project. International stars that have graced the stage include Harry Connick Jr., Anoushka Shankar, Laura Fygi, Zakir Hussain, Larry Carlton and Diana Krall. Renowned Malaysian artists including SM Salim, Sheila Majid, M Nasir, Siti Nurhaliza, Jamal Abdillah, Ramli Ibrahim, Khadijah Ibrahim, Ella, Yuna, Aizat, Hafiz, Najwa and Dayang Nurfaizah have mesmerised audiences at DFP. Concerts by talented young Malaysians from the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) continue to be hosted at this venue. DFP’s success is also attributed to its exceptional architectural design, superior acoustics and recording studio modelled after the legendary Abbey Road Studios. 43

MALAYSIAN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) gave its inaugural performance at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) on 17 August 1998. The MPO today comprises musicians from 24 countries, including 7 from Malaysia, a remarkable example of harmony among different cultures and nationalities. A host of internationally-acclaimed musicians has worked with the MPO, including Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Yehudi Menuhin, Joshua Bell, Harry Connick Jr., José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli and Branford Marsalis, many of whom have praised the MPO for its fine musical qualities and vitality. With each new season, the MPO continues to present a varied programme of orchestral music drawn from over three centuries, as well as the crowd-pleasing concert series. Its versatility transcends genres, from classical masterpieces to film music, pop, jazz, contemporary and commissioned works. The MPO regularly performs at major cities of Malaysia. Internationally, it has showcased its virtuosity to audiences in Singapore (1999, 2001 and 2005), Korea (2001), Australia

(2004), China (2006), Taiwan (2007), Japan (2001 and 2009) and Vietnam (2013). Its Education and Outreach Programme, ENCOUNTER, reaches beyond the concert platform to develop musical awareness, appreciation and skills through dedicated activities that include instrumental lessons, workshops and school concerts. ENCOUNTER also presents memorable events in such diverse venues as orphanages, hospitals, rehabilitation centres and community centres. The MPO’s commitment to furthering musical interest in the nation has been the creation of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO). It gave its inaugural concert at DFP on 25 August 2007, followed by a tour in Peninsular Malaysia. It has performed in Sabah and Sarawak (2008), Singapore (2009) and Brisbane, Australia (2012). As it celebrates its 18th anniversary in 2016, the MPO remains steadfast in its mission to share the depth, power and beauty of great music. The MPO’s main benefactor is PETRONAS and its patron is Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali.
