MPCS Mission Statement Providing academic excellence in a Christ-centered environment, Mount Paran Christian School unites with home and church to prepare servant-leaders to honor God, love others, and walk in Truth.

MPCS Vision Statement Mount Paran Christian School will become the exemplary Christian school in the Atlanta area as defined by the development of Christ-centered servant-leaders and quality academic preparation.

From the headmaster Dear friends, There is so much good news to report—amazing performances on our stages, quality state-ranked athletic achievements, dual accreditation success by our academic sector, a redo of our preschool’s Sewell Cottage, extraordinary college placements by our soon-to-be alumni—I could go on but, unlike Wingspans of the past, this issue is dedicated to one theme—philanthropy at MPCS. All other tremendously exciting news of the year will be featured in the summer issue of the Wingspan. Stay tuned! MPCS has been blessed with the generosity of so many friends and families. I first want to say thanks! Thanks to the many families who contributed to the Annual Fund, as well as to financial aid, academics, arts, missions, athletics, service, and volunteer organizations—you name it! While this giving is essential in offsetting the gap between tuition and operational costs, we are now engaged in our capital campaign— Imagine Tomorrow—designed to enhance the experience of our students by acquiring facilities that will allow for quality expansion of programs. An undertaking of this size and significance requires our full commitment to a vision of preparing students to take Christ into a lost world. This effort also requires leadership—people willing to step-up and accept the challenge to raise funds to pay for the Murray Arts Center, build a high school, and construct an athletic stadium. Dale and Cindy Hughes have accepted the challenge of chairing the campaign and will be working alongside the development office in this effort. We thank the Hughes family! Not only have they assumed this role, they have contributed generously by giving $1 million toward the purchase of the Murray Arts Center. The article on page 4, “Leaving a Legacy,” features this family’s dedication to MPCS and was appropriately written by their daughter, Lauren. Who would know them better? The time is now! With a challenge grant of $1.5 million from an anonymous foundation, we must raise the remaining $2.3 million by December 31, 2012! Please join us in this Kingdom work as together we can make a difference in the lives of our students—today and tomorrow!

Leaving a Legacy Written by Lauren Hughes

In 1986, a newlywed couple bought their first home in the booming north Atlanta suburb of Cobb County. It was a quaint house with just enough room for a husband, a recent graduate from the University of Georgia’s School of Law, his wife, an English teacher at a local high school, and their dog, a rescued Doberman Pinscher. They couldn’t possibly have known when they bought that first house what the next two decades would bring, but they knew Cobb County was where they wanted to be - where God had called them to be. As children, they both spent a lot of time moving around, he as the son of a career Air Force man and she as the daughter of a Methodist minister, and it was because of this that they wanted to plant their own small family’s roots somewhere permanently. They wanted to make their lives and raise their children in one place. They wanted a place they could call home. They wanted a community. That newly married couple—known as Dale and Cindy Hughes to most, but simply as dad and mom to me—still reside in Cobb County. True to their word, they raised my two younger siblings and me in one place. In fact, I lived in the same house in a neighborhood off of Gordon Combs Road until I was fourteen years old (and even then, when we moved, it was only to a new neighborhood across the street). It was always important to my parents that we have a community to grow up in—a community with friends, mentors, and leaders that would help mold us into intelligent, compassionate, and faithful citizens of, not just our immediate community, but the world. The emphasis my parents put on faith and a communal aspect of living is what led them to enroll my younger sister and brother, Lindsey (MPCS ’10) and Luke (MPCS ’14), at Mount Paran Christian School in 2007. As a school, Mount Paran Christian strives to unite home, school, and church to prepare youth spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually. Quite simply, MPCS is about the business of fostering servant-leaders to enter the world ready to honor God, love others, and walk in Truth. The result of this mission is that MPCS is a community filled with faculty, families, and students with a passion for serving God, loving others, and lifelong learning.

Lauren Hughes is a University of Georgia graduate (B.A., Communication Studies,’12) and former Mount Paran Christian School intern. She is currently pursuing a career as a freelance writer. www.laurenmhughes.com

WINGSPAN | Spring 2012

It was that exact passion for God, for service, and for lifelong learning that inspired my parents to accept the chairmanship role of the Imagine Tomorrow Capital Campaign last year. It was that passion—passion for service to their community and, above all, to the Lord - that also led them to commit a lead gift of $1 million to the first phase of the campaign (acquiring the Murray Arts Center). And it is that same passion that will motivate them to work alongside the MPCS community to raise the money needed to match the challenge grant awarded to the school by an anonymous Atlanta-area foundation by the end of 2012. The crazy thing about passion is that it is often contagious. On Friday, February 3, 2012, my family was honored by the MPCS administration after an exhilarating come-from-behind victory by the Lady Eagles varsity basketball team against The Walker School. The gym buzzed with excitement—with passion—as my family stood at center court that night. As the sign that bore our family’s name was unveiled, my father explained why we had chosen to give to the Imagine Tomorrow Capital Campaign. As the crowd looked on, he said simply, “We need to show our children that investing in this school is investing in the future of our community. We need to imagine a tomorrow where we occupy the world with servant-leaders.” There is no greater blessing than the blessing of a community like MPCS. They didn’t know it when they moved to Cobb County in 1986, but MPCS was what my parents had been searching for all along - for them and for their three future children. For my parents, Mount Paran Christian School is the embodiment of the ideals they have always tried to teach Lindsey, Luke, and me. MPCS is a passionate community of believers committed to not just learning, but to serving, as well—and that passion is absolutely contagious. It’s that passion for service to community and, above all, service to the Lord that moved my parents to commit to the Imagine Tomorrow Capital Campaign. It’s that passion that reverberated off the walls of the newly-christened Hughes Gymnasium in February after the Lady Eagles’ win over Walker. And it’s that same passion that will join us together over the next year and allow us to imagine a tomorrow for our community that is even brighter than today. W

MPCS Allows me to use my talents for god’s glory in such a beautiful facility.

Case Study: Sisters Shine in the Arts Written by Tiffany Westbrook

Lights, camera, action — just a typical evening at the Murray Arts Center at Mount Paran Christian School. Unlike any arts center in the region, this facility is constantly buzzing with students, dancers, instrumentalists, artists, actors, singers, and producers. The 577-seat Kristi Lynn Theatre, black box theater, ballet and piano studios, choral and orchestra rooms, recording studio, classrooms, and event spaces provide state-of-the-art resources for MPCS families. There’s no doubt that these incredible spaces within the Murray Arts Center are being utilized for God’s glory. Though we have been blessed thus far by what this facility offers, the question remains: Why are we really working to pay off such a large expense? The capital campaign Phase One plan to purchase the Murray Arts Center outright is not about buildings at all. Instead, it’s about utilizing this environment to impact student lives. And in today’s culture, fostering a child’s character, especially in their formative years, can be challenging. This is a place where we can provide our kids opportunities to discover their God-given gifts. From their commitment and dedicated hours, reaching of goals, and growing in confidence, we will ultimately cultivate a generation of servant-leaders through the Arts. But don’t take our word for it. Take a look at a family who is shining in this place. Meet the Blackburn sisters. Isabel Blackburn (grade 8) has had a life-long passion for dance. Attending MPCS has plugged her into other areas of performing arts such as musical theater, chorus, and drama. “I love dancing” says Isabel, “and MPCS allows me to use my talents for God’s glory in such a beautiful facility.” Isabel’s God-given gifts have been recently showcased in her spectacular performance in Mulan Jr. MPCS dance instructor, Lynne Brague comments, “Isabel is very dedicated to her training in the arts. She goes above and beyond to achieve her best and to help others. Her humble attitude shines through as a Christ-like example.” Drama instructor Meagan Morgan agrees, “While Isabel is one of the hardest workers in my class, she also is one of the sweetest and most humble students I know.” Emily Blackburn (grade 7) has explored her options at the Murray Arts Center in another direction. She has always enjoyed visual art but coming to MPCS has sparked a genuine passion for musical arts. She now plays the double bass, piano, and harp. After joining the MPCS Orchestra last year, Emily mentions, “I found an instrument that I want to play for the rest of my life.” Instructor Jennifer Laminack explains, “Emily is such a creative and passionate student, always ready to experiment and try something new, and always putting one hundred percent into everything she does in class. With her artistic imagination and drive, it will be so exciting to see where all she will go in life.” Isabel and Emily exemplify the opportunities for student-growth available through the arts. Their mother, Jan Blackburn comments, “The facilities and instruction at the Murray Arts Center have created an environment of excellence. The pace of our daughters’ development has exceeded our expectations.” Students like the Blackburn sisters are truly the reason why we do what we do. Jan Blackburn adds, “It is a joy to see them blossom into unique, Christ-filled young women.” W

Annual Report Dear Mount Paran Christian School Supporters, With the abundant blessings of our faithful Lord and generous donors like you giving sacrificially, 2010-2011 was a record year for Mount Paran Christian School. Your contributions to the school last year, which are critical to the annual budget and strategic plans for the future of MPCS, totaled $2,585,190 (including Annual Fund, designated giving, capital campaign, and GOAL). Annual Fund remains the top giving priority of the school, and we are grateful for the 82 percent participation our parents achieved, gaining us access to more foundation dollars for the school. We look forward to this opportunity each year to recognize our donors which include parents, alumni, grandparents, corporate partners, and friends of the school. Thank you for your continued support and prayers for Mount Paran Christian School!

It’s Time to Imagine Tomorrow, Today

A Capital Campaign Update

The clock is ticking and we are nearing the finish line on the first and most critical phase of the Imagine Tomorrow Capital Campaign. Just how close are we to celebrating sweet victory? What do we really achieve for MPCS by hitting this first benchmark of the capital campaign? And what is the main factor in our success? In late 2007 and with an unprecedented $10 million grant from the Stuart and Eulene Murray Family Foundation, Mount Paran Christian School purchased the Murray Arts Center and officially launched the capital campaign to pay for the Center, build a high school addition, and construct an athletic stadium. While it hasn’t been the ideal economic climate since that time, we pressed on with the campaign in faith, and the Lord’s blessings have been abundant! In 2010, an anonymous Atlanta foundation made a challenge grant for $1.5 million, accessible if our school community could raise the remaining $5 million by January 2013 (needed for the full $16.5 million purchase of the Murray Arts Center.) Since that time, many of our MPCS families and friends have made generous gift commitments, including the Hughes’ $1 million donation, to draw us closer to that goal. To date, we have raised $14.2 million which is 86 percent of our phase one goal! So, how close are we? $2.3 million by December 31, 2012. That’s it! We can literally see the finish line. When we are successful in raising this remaining $2.3 million needed to trigger the challenge grant, a few things will happen: 1) The first phase of the capital campaign will be complete; 2) We will be able to move on to the needed high school addition (to accommodate the growth in enrollment and class offerings) and the athletic stadium which serves as home to football, soccer, lacrosse, track and field, cheerleading, and marching band; 3) As soon as we pay off the Murray Arts Center, we can direct attention to enhancing various program areas of the school.

One more thing is at stake for MPCS—our reputation. This is a pivotal moment. The challenge grant being offered is, in essence, a test for our school community. At the end of December, having successfully achieved the goal, we will have also made the strong statement that we are a leading institution and worthy of further funding by major foundations. To attract their attention for future projects, we must first prove our ability to rally the support of our families. Foundations have told us, if we are successful in this first phase, they will consider gifts to the high school addition and athletic stadium. Meeting this challenge grant will determine whether our families must bear the financial burden of these future projects alone, or whether our school will have standing in the philanthropic community that earns us the opportunity to access outside funding. What do we need in order to finish the Murray Arts Center phase and literally catapult MPCS to the next level? YOU. Now is the time for every family and friend of MPCS to prayerfully consider their own gift to the capital campaign and go above and beyond what you normally give each year. This is a sacrificial gift; an investment that will benefit your children and future students, as evidenced in the photos throughout this issue. Just like those parents a decade before you who built this beautiful campus for your children, we ask you to invest in MPCS for coming generations. Why should you give? Our God and His children deserve the very best we can give. While tuition runs the school at a basic level, dramatic enhancements to our programs and facilities expansions requires an investment through sacrificial giving. In other words, it is not about the buildings. It’s about what happens inside the buildings and classrooms, on the stage and on the field, and in the heart of every child. It’s about preparing every student academically and spiritually, to be servant-leaders. It’s about helping them explore their gifts and learning how to use those gifts in a way that impacts the world for Christ. We invite you to Imagine Tomorrow, to change our students’ lives, and to create a legacy for your children and family through our capital campaign. W

How to Give TODAY

Now is the time! While there are staff and volunteers making personal contact with many families, don’t wait for that call. If you are ready to discuss a gift or have questions before making a decision, please complete the response card attached in this publication or contact the school. Jennifer New in the Development Office, Dr. Tilley, or a parent volunteer will be happy to visit with you and review the details of the campaign. Thanks!

What kind of giving will help us accomplish the goal?

• Giving is a personal decision based on each family’s set of unique factors. However, we ask that you stretch your faith and make a gift above your normal giving.

• Spread the word to grandparents, family friends, relatives, and business colleagues who have the ability to make a major gift.

• A one-time gift of cash or a multi-year pledge (over three years) will both be counted toward our goal. In other words, if making a multi-year pledge enables your family to commit more, we are able to count the full amount toward the challenge. (Ex. A $30,000 pledge in annual payments of

• There are multiple and various named gift opportunities available throughout campus including the Murray Arts Center, academic spaces, and athletic facilities. Contact the Development Office for a complete list.

$10,000 counts as $30,000 toward the challenge goal.)
