we have heard authors remark, "I only truly know

myself when I am writing." The arts speak to our most honest selves, whether it is through words, movement, a lens, a brush, or simply our hands. The arts express our dreams, our fears, our hopes, and our humanity. West Chester, with a historical tradition of valuing and cultivating the arts, is notably abundant with creatives. We are building Uptown Alliance to house musical and theatrical performances. We have our own theatre company and Shakespeare in our local parks. West Chester University's College of Arts and Humanities continues to grow and flourish, flooding our town with up and coming talent.

Find out more on page 36!

As the arts grow in West Chester, so does Fig. We enthusiastically welcome Bri Carlisle to our amazing team of community connectors and creators. Bri, with a gift for and love of photography, brings to Fig a passion for community building and small business development, as well asan impressive marketing background. In this issue, we present a book of artists, makers, and creatives who have made West Chester their home—nationally recognized talent that inspires our local community and beyond. Matthew Perko, a local West Chester high school student, graces our cover with his unparalleled physical abilities and our town with his kind spirit. This fall, we encourage you to pick up a brush, attend a performance, or buy a piece of art. Find your passion and inspire your creative spirit right here in West Chester.

Althea in her bedroom with her favorite cameras, books, and artwork.

AUTHENTIC:

ALTHEA HUTCH I N SO N

thirteen-year-old West Chester

resident Althea Hutchinson was diagnosed with cancer in her left eye just after her first birthday. To make sure they got it all, the doctors took her eye and all the muscles in the socket and gave her a prosthetic eye that’s virtually unnoticeable. And the best part is that the initial unfortunate diagnosis hasn’t slowed her down. Which is good, because Althea is a vibrant, confident young woman with a passion for the arts. “I love photography,” she says, “but artwise I’ve been getting into doing more drawing. I just took a really cool class where I did pencil and ink, graphic novel

style; and then I water-colored it and it came out really awesome.” She’s inspired by the works of Brian Selznik, who’s won awards for his illustrated books. “It’s not just beautiful art with a lazy storyline,” Althea says, “the story lines are logical and it feels like it’s a movie in front of you.” Althea’s interests aren’t limited to the arts, however. “I love to read and I love art, but I also love archery,” she says, which she got into by reading ‘Ranger’s Apprentice’ by John Flanagan. “Archery is awesome,” she continues, “because with most sports I’m at a disadvantage because of my eye. But with archery you have to close an eye anyway!”

Althea is also an active fundraiser for childhood cancer research. She’s a star speaker for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation at their annual Philadelphia event, and she and her friends and family have raised over $50,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand since she began. And in spring of 2015, she visited the corporate headquarters of Rita’s Italian Ice, which partners with Alex’s Lemonade Stand. “I was CEO for a day,” she says, “and I got to make every single dessert they have and sample everything. And, I met the real CEO and got to chill with him—pun intended!”

west chester needs a theatre. UPTOWN!

Entertainment Alliance is a non-profit organization that started as a conversation among friends. Three years later that conversation has evolved into a realized and passionate plan to bring a theatre to West Chester, Pennsylvania. With the combined efforts of the surrounding community, including MacElree Harvey, the 100-year-old Armory building on North High Street in downtown West Chester will be transformed into a flexible, mixed-use theatre. The main stage will have 300 plus seats, as well as additional spaces upstairs and on the lower level of the building. As a centrally located cultural hub, the new theatre will present professional theatre, jazz, music, Latin programming, improv, modern dance, and educational opportunities for children and adults. Save the date, and plan to attend the grand opening Celebration of a Century on December 31, 2016 to celebrate 100 years of the Armory building and the launch of its new life as a future theatre for our community. Visit uptownwestchester.org to learn more and to make a donation today to support the transformation.

STEFFI SWOPE

has long been the melting pot, where people from different cultures offer their unique talents and perspectives for the greater benefit of society. West Chester, like most towns and cities today, is a microcosm of that melting pot and a good exemplar of that notion is Steffi Swope, who has lived in West Chester for 40 years. But she’s a pioneer transplant—and her family’s story begins in the 19th century.

ranchers, builders, and developers.” Steffi grew up herding cattle on a Quarter Horse right on the Mexican border in southern California. Her twin sister, Robbie McErlane, was the first to move east to West Chester, and when Steffi came out to visit, she ended up falling in love with and later marrying the best friend of her sister’s husband. She became a teacher and taught middle school history and world cultures in the West Chester School District for the next 30 years.

the Sultana Foundation, and various animal rescue organizations. Steffi has also been active in Women for Sail, which is women teaching other women how to sail competitively, from the Chesapeake to Indonesia. Steffi says it’s so important for women to celebrate women in this way, because it gives them the confidence to do other things in their life.

“I’m a fifth-generation Californian,” she says proudly. “My Norwegian ancestors were immigrants who walked from the Boston area down through the Cumberland Gap to eventually settle in San Diego, where they became cattle

Widowed now for 13 years, Steffi has been active in many charitable and community organizations in the area, including the Swope Family Scholarship Foundation, the Chester County Historical Society,

“I’m very passionate about people stepping out of their comfort zone and celebrating other people’s cultures,” Steffi says. “There are people living in Chester County who have an enormous amount to offer who were not born and raised here—their culture and their ideas make Chester County a more interesting place.”

Sharlee K. Van Tine, AIA, LEED Director//Architecture Philadelphia

we’re on a mission to redefine architecture. For 15 years we’ve thoughtfully pursued an ambitious path to simplify the design-build process and unleash the possibilities of what architecture can achieve. We’ve done that by harnessing the power of our family of companies: RETRO Development, TONO Architects, PROTO Construction, and Interiors by DECO. By working together, we create a

strong, seamless, streamlined process. United as a family of companies, we have the greatest ability to impact and influence the built environment, for good, from beginning to end. Founded in Lancaster in 2001, TONO Group has continued to grow and expand our reach all across the midAtlantic. As part of our commitment to the Philadelphia region, we’ve established an office under the leadership of Sharlee Van Tine.

At TONO Group, we believe architecture is truly a singular endeavor—and as strategic placemakers, we will continue our mission to do architecture a little differently, creating meaningful places and building with intention and sustainability in mind. We’re looking toward the future—and we’re bringing architecture back to the conversation about how to shape a community.
