Hello...

‘YOUR M MAGAZ OVE INE’

For our special edition dedicated to the memory of John Lennon we strived to bring a little bit of 60s style to each feature in this issue of Your Move. We found out all about the life of John Lennon from playwright Bob Eaton (including some never heard before titbits) and photographed our very swinging sixties fashion shoot at The Beatles Story Pier Head. We’ve also chosen the best events happening over the next two months for The Lennon Tribute season. As always, we’ve picked out the best properties to rent and for all the latest news sign up to our free digital fortnightly magazine by emailing post@movepublishing.co.uk

The Punk era of Eric’s Club tried to forget The Beatles ever existed only to lose out to a wealth of Beatles themed businesses opening up in Liverpool. Your Move asks how big Beatles business in Liverpool is and will it just keep growing?

Beatles business is big business. The sixties saw the city selling everything from moptop wigs at Woolworths to guitar shaped cakes at Sayers as they cashed in on the superstar status of Liverpool’s sons. Even Prime Minister Ted Heath declared "The Beatles have boosted our reserves" barely suppressing a hearty Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! And by the time of their Hard Day’s Night

driving forces behind the regeneration of the city after the collapse of its shipping industry and Toxteth riots brought it to its knees. Left a hollow shell of its former self the city had to take drastic positive steps to kick start its economy, and with The Beatles being the most successful band to date it was a short jump from industrial city to touristic attraction. The rise of themed businesses, probably beginning with the reopening of The Cavern in 1991 and the opening of The Beatles Story, brought in a wealth of investment that would lead to its eventual naming as Capital of Culture 08. Jon Keats, Events Manager at The Cavern Club, commented: “Prior to taking over the club we were already at the forefront, we were running Beatles Week Festival and Cavern City Tours for 10 years. At the same time The Beatles Story opened up and

we led the way for what has become a huge part of the city’s economy.” This month’s John Lennon Tribute, a two-month celebration of everything the peace campaigner stood for,

Liverpool is rightfully a pilgrimage for many, where The Cavern Club is their church and the hotel of choice is the ironically named Hard Days Night on the doorstep of Mathew Street with its juxtaposition of tasteful décor and Fab Four themed interiors. An estimated 826,000 day visitors and 110,000 staying visitors come to Liverpool each year to visit the birthplace of The Beatles, spending approximately £48million. Beatlemania was one of the key

HOT TOPIC year brings with it a new generation of Beatles and John Lennon fans. The event also provides an opportunity to showcase the destination to a global audience. It is encouraging to see so many attractions, venues and organisations come together to produce this programme.” This tribute is the latest in a long line of annual events celebrating the music and ethos

lost its steam. Mike Dewey, General Manager at the Hard Days Night Hotel, commented: “We have traded at between 60 and 70 per cent occupancy which although is below our competitor set we do not compromise the rate as others are prepared to do and as a consequence we tend to out perform the market on average rate and the industry bench

still isn’t fully reaching its potential when it comes to the Fab Four. It may seem like there are enough themed cafes, bars and tours already but fans are turning to new and exciting ways to use beatlemania as a business idea. One of the more successful ones is Beatles Business Basics, who offer motivational Beatlesthemed keynote presentations, seminars and training

The Beatles has brought world wide recognition and I can't for the life of me understand why the city does not make more of them.” Even if Scousers have become a bit immune to the glory of Paul, John, Ringo and George, this seems to be a common belief with people working in the industry – Liverpool

Director John MacCarfrae commented: “We were set up in 2000 and now have requests as far as from the USA and Canada to maximize the potential of organizations using the story of The Beatles who are the most successful band ever.” Liverpool’s new industry barely seems to be waning and with the

of the Fab Four from Beatles Day to the long Beatles Week rounding it up with the Mathew Street festival. It seems The Beatles are still a marketing dream spawning off numerous by-products with everything from mugs to paintings. After the opening of the first ever Beatles themed hotel Hard Days Night in 2008 it seems the dream still hasn’t

interactive lesson in all things scouse-rock, it’s hooking a new generation. Our top tips for those who want to set up a Beatles-themed business are: be passionate about The Beatles, be unique and be wary of the legal implications and abuse of the Fab Four’s collection as you don’t want to be sued by the corporate arm of McCartney and Ringo, otherwise known as Apple Corps. The Beatles business may have helped bring it back from the brink of ghost town but it’s what Liverpool has done with its economy that helps it grow year on year. Tate Liverpool attracts nearly a million visitors each year and is the most visited gallery of modern art outside London, showing a lively mix of international exhibitions and displays and produce a wide range of events and projects in the Liverpool city region. For the mean time The Beatles are safe from a Disney-style extravaganza for as long as the founding fathers have anything to do with it the business will always keep its integrity and presence in the city. www.visitliverpool.com/site/ music/the-beatles/johnlennon-tribute-season

Most of Tate Liverpool's visitors come from outside of the Northwest (33%) with a further 20% visiting from abroad

2008/2009 1,046,196 visitors to Tate Liverpool

Liverpool City Region’s Visitor Economy is worth £1.3 billon a year, with 23,000 jobs, by 2012 £1.4 billion and 25,000 jobs

Liverpool Hero remembered

Charleston House

The great-granddaughter of a Liverpool legend flew in from Australia to unveil a plaque to commemorate the city’s role in the American Civil War. The plaque at Charleston House at Rumford Court, Rumford Place, commemorates the role played in the war by the Liverpool branch of Fraser Trenholm

cotton brokers based in Charleston, South Carolina (headquarters of the Confederate States Navy) who became the unofficial European bankers for the Confederacy. The plaque has been specially recast to commemorate the recently completed refurbishment of Alabama, Bulloch, Winslow, Enrica and Charleston Houses which are currently being

marketed by Keppie Massie. Barbara Elliott’s greatgrandfather was James Dunwoody Bulloch, the Confederate States’ Navy secret purchasing agent in Liverpool during the American Civil War (1861-65) who operated out of offices at Rumford Court during that time. He was also an uncle of US President Teddy Roosevelt and cousin to Jefferson Davis,

president of the Confederate States of America. He commissioned the building of the CSS Alabama out of Laird’s shipyard in Birkenhead but the havoc she wreaked on American ships caused much Anglo-American tension since Britain was officially neutral during the war. When the war ended with victory for the Union he was exiled in Liverpool as a traitor (he is buried in Toxteth) and the UK was fined £3million by the International Court of Justice for allowing the CSS Alabama to be built. Rumford Court is currently home to a thriving business community of architects, financial advisors, solicitors, estate agents, insurance brokers and PR agencies and has a total of 4,500²ft of office space available, ranging from units of 750²ft to 2,600²ft. For more information telephone Keppie Massie on 0151 236 9660 or visit www.keppiemassie.com

Sutton Kersh expand Sutton Kersh has expanded its South Liverpool lettings and property management operations with the opening of a new lettings office on Allerton Road, just two doors down from their flagship estate agency branch. The opening of the new office at 56A Allerton Road follows on from their best rental month on record. To tie in with the opening they are offering free preparation of inventory for all new instructions received in October; providing landlords with a saving of £95+VAT. Phil Lawton, Director at Sutton Kersh commented: “There is a strong demand for rental property in

South Liverpool and our new lettings office on Allerton Road will strengthen our position as one of the leading letting agents in the city.” City centre properties are proving to be particularly popular with the majority being let within days of coming on to the market. High demand has created a shortage of good quality stock in the city centre and rental prices remain strong and steady. It is hoped that the recent return of buy-to-let lender Paragon will invigorate the buy-to-let sector and allow investors to re-enter the marketplace. The specialist lender has introduced a number of new products aimed at providing finance to those they describe as ‘professional landlords’. Sutton Kersh’s

Bellway’s Express Mover Service gets Jim and Nicky moving to Garston In a challenging housing market the more you can do to ease the path for a buyer the better. Certainly award winning house builder Bellway realises this which is why it is recommending its Express Mover Service to potential clients. “Our Express Mover Service aims to take the hassle out of moving and put buyers and sellers together at the earliest opportunity, at the same time making sure that the estate agent is working harder on your behalf,” commented Bellway’s sales director, Jenny Bell. That certainly seems to be the experience of Jim and Nicky who moved from Mosely Hill to Bellway’s development at Cressington Grange in Garston. “We had been considering

moving for a while, but it wasn’t until we viewed the homes at Bellway’s Cressington Grange development that we really made up our minds to move. Bellway’s Ribble house type really ticked all the boxes. The location is excellent with good access to public transport; I work in Liverpool and am able to catch the train from South Parkway station into the city. “We have two adult children, one at university and one on a gap year so the three double bedrooms were ideal. Bellway’s Express Mover Service certainly helped in finding us a buyer for our old home who in fact turned out to be a first time buyer which meant there was no chain. We have been in our new home for a couple of months now and we’re really

delighted. Bellway made the buying process quite straight forward and Debbie the sales advisor and Tony the site manager have helped us throughout,” said Jim. Cressington Grange offers house buyers a variety of house styles and sizes including 3 and 4 bedroom homes priced from £157,995. Garston offers a wide range of local amenities including doctors, dentist and shops for day-to-day requirements. “The new Mersey Shopping Park and leisure facilities are also close by. Educationally there is St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School, Gilmour Junior & Infants Schools and St Benedict's College, all less than a mile away.” For commuters, Cressington

HAVE YOUR SAY YOUR VIEWS ON BIG ISSUES

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN JOHN LENNON DIED?

“The day John Lennon died I was 18 and was taking my mum for her first trip to London. It was one of those super saver away days that you could get in those days when you set off at a godforsaken hour and came back the same day having taken London by storm. Due to this it meant we had been on the go from dawn and had not heard any news but were struck on arriving in London how sombre the atmosphere was - every shop we went into was playing Lennon. Arriving in Covent Garden to more Lennon music we asked the assistant and were shocked to receive the news that Lennon was dead. We spent the rest of our day, like others, in quiet contemplation.”

Karen Gallagher Artistic Director Merseyside Dance Initiative The Daktota Building

“I was 14 and although I was a Paul McCartney fan, I remember very clearly my older brother who was a huge fan of John Lennon. I remember how depressed and distressed he was, he never went to school that day. I didn’t realise at the time how significant that day was, not until years later. You remember the little things like we made scones that day. ”

“I was at home when I heard on the breakfast news that John Lennon had been shot. I was shocked and saddened by the news. I had grown up listening to the Beatles, and John Lennon in particular was a big musical influence for me. I remember thinking how tragic it was that he should be murdered when he finally seemed to have found peace and happiness in his life. He brought a great deal of pleasure to millions of people and deserves his place as one of the great songwriters of modern times.”

Phil Lawton Director of Sutton Kersh

Jon Keats Event Manager at The Cavern Club

“I heard about it in the morning news on the radio. Then I was in rehearsal in Manchester but I remember going in and everyone being in shock. You can’t take these things in immediately it’s a bit like the world trade towers being destroyed you can’t take it in for a while. There’s a brilliant scene in the TV film The Ruttles, with George Harrison. All things in the film are references to The Beatles and in the film Lennon goes to Australia and the reporter asks them how do you feel, and they say “well, shocked and stunned.” Ringo and George later repeated that same line in an interview after John Lennon’s death.”

“I can remember exactly where I was when I heard the news of the death of John Lennon. My parents lived in a village just outside of Brighton and I was visiting. I was having a shave when my mother announced that John Lennon had been shot.”

A very unusual tenancy was sold at Merseyside Property Auctions making their September auction a big success. The auction offered a variety of lots including a 3-bedroom mid terraced house in Fincham Road, Liverpool which had a very unusual tenancy – 33 year lease from 2007 at a fixed rent of £3,600 per year for the whole of the term. Northwest Women in Business award winner and founder-Director, Kate Lay, commented: “This was a very unusual tenancy, the property was being sold on behalf of Receivers and they were delighted with the result of the sale, with the house selling for £57,500.” Merseyside Property Auctions’ Consultant Auctioneer, Guy Charrison, who can often be seen on BBC TV in “Homes under the Hammer”, commented: “There were some very good buying opportunities – the returns on rental income could exceed 10 percent, 20 times the level of the Bank of England’s base rate, an opportunity never seen before in bricks and mortar investments.” Kate Lay, said that she is looking forward to her next sale on 24 November – a date which gives those who are looking to sell and complete before Christmas an opportunity of doing so.

Landlords Wanted!

eBay Mania

Julia Casimo

A lot of people seem to be doing it nowadays – buying and selling on internet auction sites, eBay being the best known. And according to recent news articles many people are making a lot of money... Q. My husband, who works shifts for the Post Office, and has quite a lot of free time, is a keen golfer. Last year he began to buy wholesale lots of golf equipment like sets of clubs, and clothing, and then sell them individually on eBay and he has become quite successful at this. Somebody has told me that this is taxable, but surely it is just my husband’s hobby, as he already has a job?? A. There are no hard – and – fast rules to determine whether your husband’s eBay activities are taxable. It is necessary to consider the facts in each individual case, and to take into account the type, frequency and history of your husband’s transactions, along with his intentions when he purchases the goods. Having said that, based on what you have told me your husband’s activities do sound very much like trading. This is because he seems to be buying and selling frequently, and is purchasing items with the motivation of selling them at a profit. The fact that your husband has a job is not really relevant and it is perfectly possible for someone to be employed and selfemployed at the same time. Q. Is he likely to get into trouble with the HMRC?? A. Your husband should have notified HMRC of his trading activity within three months of starting to trade. He will be liable to tax on the profits of his eBay trading and a penalty for not notifying HMRC within the three month time limit. In addition he needs to be aware of the VAT threshold ( currently £70,000 ) as if his annual sales exceed this he will be liable for VAT as well, whether or not he collected it from his customers. eBay transactions are not part of the cash economy as sales have to be made by cheque, postal order or virtual credit card systems like ‘Pay pal’ and ‘Escrow’ and a record of all these transaction will exist either in your husband’s bank account or his Pay pal account. HMRC is now using a variety of techniques to locate regular sellers on auction sites. Q. So everyone selling things on eBay is going to have to pay tax? A. Not at all. If you use eBay to sell unwanted personal items (clothes, jewellery, household goods etc) this is very unlikely to be taxable. One-off transactions like these are subject to the capital gains tax rules for ‘chattels’ and will be exempt if the item has a life of less than 50 years or if it is bought and sold for less than £6000.

What attracted you to Cressington Heath? We had looked at second hand homes but every property needed something doing to it. We decided to look at new builds because everything is ready to go without any work required. With HomeBuy Direct we were able to take out an equity loan for up to 30 per cent of the price, which made owning our own home more affordable. The whole buying process was really simple and nothing was too much trouble for the Redrow staff – from the construction team to the sales consultants.

What’s the layout of the house? The ‘Faygate’ is different to other homes as it’s arranged over three floors. On the ground floor there’s an openplan kitchen/ diner plus a separate lounge. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, a family bathroom and second lounge, with the master bedroom and en-suite on the top floor.

Page 35

Tell us about the living area? The main living room on the ground floor is a really good size. It’s well lit with French doors that lead to the garden helping to bring the outside inside. Supporting local businesses is important to us and we bought some of our furniture from a shop nearby called Cressington Pine.

Keith Cunningha m & Corinne Parkes Liverpool is ‘home’ of the Beatles, do you have a favourite Beatle? We don’t really have a favourite member of the band but we do like and respect their music. Their catalogue of hits like the Help album is so vast that it’s hard to pick a favourite song.

Tell us about the kitchen? It’s open plan with the dining room combined with the kitchen. The tall units and wide drawers are ideal as it means there’s plenty of storage space. It’s the perfect kitchen for us.

And the bathroom? The bathroom is superb as there’s lots of space and includes a shower above the bath.

What would be your dream buy? My dream purchase for the house would be a 50inch 3D TV.

What about the bedrooms? There are three bedrooms – two on the first floor (one with a Juliet balcony) - and the master bedroom even includes French doors to a walk-out balcony. The master bedroom also enjoys the benefit of an en-suite shower, which is really handy. Most of the bedroom furniture is handmade by Corinne’s dad who runs his own business Ormeside Joinery.

Obituary COLIN ROMAINE BLEASDALE “A family man and pioneering builder, who developed communities across the NW of England.” COLIN BLEASDALE was born in Aintree, Liverpool on 9th November 1925 and died on 9th September 2010, aged 84 years of age. He was a pioneering builder and business man who contributed to the post war development of Liverpool, Wirral and Lancashire. Along with his father, Sam Bleasdale, he was instrumental in the Bleasdale tradition of building affordable, quality and spacious houses throughout the North West of England. The houses are today affectionately still known as ‘Sefton Houses’, with the road names chosen by Colin to reflect his love of the Lakes (in Maghull) as well as Public Schools (in Aintree). The Sefton Building Company Ltd was based in Aintree in Liverpool and built over 30,000 houses, shops and commercial properties between 1932 and 1976. The company, at its peak, employed over 200 Liverpool based staff with many additional components for property development built at the family’s builder’s merchants or joiners shops Melsons Ltd, also based in Aintree. The Bleasdale family built the Old Roan Estate in Aintree, Liverpool as well as other estates in Bromborough, Eastham, Parkgate, Barnston, Litherland, Childwall, West Derby, Aughton, Maghull and Blundellsands. They were also closely involved with a range of North West councils, developing estates in Maghull, Lydiate, Aintree, Halsall, Whiston, Huyton, Prescot, Bootle, Liverpool, Burnley, Accrington, Clitheroe, Lunt Village, Rufford, Darwen and Blackpool. The Bleasdale family built the Old Roan estate in Aintree, Liverpool. The estate was planned and built in its entirety by the company. It was some achievement and attracted favourable comment from planning experts who were impressed by the practical and imaginative design. Colin demonstrated such tenacity for life that he did not retire and continued working until his death. He set a trend for working past retirement age, continuing his economic endeavours by setting up a business with his son, Marcus, in 2001 when he was 75 years of age and established a Managing Agent and Lettings business in 2009, aged 84 years. As a magistrate on the Ormskirk Bench in Lancashire, between 1970 and 1995, he was known and respected as a firm but fair provider of justice. His commitment to the judiciary included offering opportunities to ex-offenders to work within the building companies. Later in life, Colin married Frances Margaret Martland in 1960, after meeting her in Bleasdale Hall, the Conservative Club in Aintree. It was a meeting of two very special soul-mates, both from Aintree. They had a very happy and loving marriage, creating a family of a daughter, Simone and three sons, Clive, Marcus and Jason. Frances set a trend for older mums when she gave birth to Jason at the age of 46. With their family complete, Colin and Frances created a happy, loving and fun-filled home life, based in Aughton. They also had a particular love affair with the Algarve in Portugal, holidaying there regularly each year, and spent weekends in North Wales with the children.

As a testament to their parenting, all the children settled close by enabling Colin and Frances to enjoy their grandchildren, who affectionately called them Nana and Bapa. It was a rare and special privilege to meet and know Colin. People generally describe him as one of life’s great gentlemen who lived with dignity, style, and respect and always had a friendly interest in people – the sort of man they don’t make any more. Colin created, with his wife, special and lasting stories and memories, with their family being their treasured legacy. Colin also leaves a lasting legacy in the family business, the Bleasdale Group of Companies which provide homes to rent throughout the North West of England, continuing the Bleasdale tradition of quality, affordable homes. In addition, the three Aintree shopping centres provide a haven for small and medium sized businesses, as well as national multiples to prosper in the town that is the Bleasdales spiritual home. Colin leaves his sons, daughter, son-in-law, daughters-in-law and eight grandchildren, a sister and a niece with a legacy of love, treasured memories, laughter and family values.

It was the year of 1981 and emotions were still running high following John Lennon’s murder. As a tribute, and a wake, the musical Lennon, which follows him from Woolton church fete to New York was an instant smash hit. With Lennon finally returning to Liverpool Your Move catches up with Bob Eaton where he reveals a few juicy titbits of Lennon’s life and his delight of being the in-house director at the Royal Court Theatre.

Tell us about the play Lennon. It was the first I did at the Everyman Theatre when I was director there in ‘81 and it had only been six months since John was killed so it was intended as a tribute almost a wake. I knew I wanted it to be performed by actor musicians so you didn’t have just actors playing and others doing music, and it was a massive success. As a result I went to New York with it which was produced by Sid Bernstein, the guy who first took The Beatles to America. It was done again in London’s West End in 1985 but since then it hasn’t been done because the rights of the songs weren’t available any more especially after Michael Jackson bought them. They were passed on from him before he died but I needed to get in touch with Yoko Ono and get her approval first. Getting Yoko Ono’s blessing is notoriously difficult, how did it feel to get her approval? I’m very honoured because I didn’t meet her the first time round when we did it but then five years ago I was asked to go work on a Broadway show called Lennon which wasn’t mine and as a result I got to meet Yoko and I was able to maintain contact with her which was very fortunate. 40 Your Move

Did you write Lennon in response to his death or was it something already on the pipelines? I was sitting in a wine bar with Ken Campbell, who was the outgoing director, and we were talking about shows I wanted to do which was very much about local subjects using popular music. As we were talking somebody put on a record of John singing ‘Woman’ and I said ‘Oh my goodness, I wonder if we could do a show about John?’ and Ken agreed. My first job was working in a theatre in Stoke called the Victoria Theatre with Peter Cheeseman who used to do musical documentaries built out of interviews with local people so I took a leaf out of Peter’s book. I did a lot of interviews with people around then like Bob Wooler and Allan Williams, and the original script had a lot of those interviews in it. How has the play changed since its 1986 performance? It’s the same idea but since then there’s been so much more information available. Back then there were like three books I could draw information from and now there’s 300 books, I was wondering around in the dark. It’s changed more than anything else in terms of events. For example I was never very clear what sparked off John’s and Yoko’s split what he called ‘the lost weekend’, which lasted 18 months. Meeting Yoko she was able to tell me what happened. She said the straw that broke the camel’s back was this party where John pulled a woman into a bedroom and all the people at the party could hear

what was going on but couldn’t go in there. All the coats were on the bed so they couldn’t go home and that was the trigger, so she said to John to go to Los Angeles and I’ll tell you when to come back. However the story still centres around this extraordinary character Lennon and this amazing music that he was part of creating – his story is so fascinating you get a story, a bit of history and a good night out. How does it feel to be directing most of the shows at the Royal Court? The Royal Court is the most amazing place to work it’s the kind of the theatre I’ve been looking for all my life. The audience is so refreshing it’s a real cross section of people Liverpool is unique and the Royal Court is unique within Liverpool. How did you get into directing plays? Turn left at Greenland (laughs) – I did a drama degree in the 60s and decided while at university that directing looked like a good job and I was very lucky to get this job as soon as I left with Peter Cheeseman. That was my formative period, and I was given plays to direct from a young age. What are you now hoping for your future? I’ve got permission to do Lennon in Liverpool for the moment but who knows. I’m also doing the Christmas show Scouse Pacific which will be great. Lennon will be playing at the Royal Court Theatre from Friday, October 15 to Saturday, November 13. For tickets visit www.royalcourtliverpool.co.uk or call the Box Office on 0870 787 1866.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Ask the expert GOT AN INTERIOR DESIGN DILEMMA? EMAIL US AT POST@MOVEPUBLISHING.CO.UK

ICONIC IMAGES We have recently moved into our new home. The downstairs toilet comprises of a white suite with white tiles and black border tiles. It looks quite stark at the moment and we were wondering what you could suggest for the walls that would add a touch of glamour and make a functional room look a bit more interesting.

With over ten years’ experience in the interior design business, Sharon Armor is poised to answer all your design queries from DIY disasters to decorating dilemmas.

Trowbridge has been supplying some of the best framed art to the interior design trade world wide for more than 25 years. The company offers the finest examples of reproduction fine art prints, black and white photography, textiles and original works of art all in exquisite handmade frames. In their black and white archive collection they have over fifty iconic images of the 1960’s from which you can make your own collection to suit your personal tastes. Why not go for a music icon theme; this month celebrates the 70th Birthday of the ultimate icon, John Lennon. These images combined with, for example, Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones would create a eclectic collection. www.trowbridgegallery.com

MEMORY LANE I have inherited what I think is a retro armchair from the 1960’s. It has always belonged to my Grandmother and was a favourite of mine. I have had it re-covered in a stone coloured fabric to co-ordinate with my own furniture, but am looking for something to enhance its retro feel. I have been looking for cushions on the high street, however, nothing I have seen so far is fun or colourful enough. Do you have any suggestions? I would suggest that you look for cushions with strong imagery on them to provide colour and texture to your armchair. The Andrew Martin Beatles cushions in yellow have a fantastic tapestry style with the “Fab Four” in their iconic Sergeant Pepper outfits. I think the cushion would look fantastic on the style of chair you have described and would provide nostalgic memories of a childhood listening and dancing to The Beatles with your Grandmother.

ROLLOVER... I would really like to find some original 1960’s wallpaper preferably with a floral pattern. I have looked and been unable to find anything in my local vintage shops and fairs. I don’t need many rolls as I only want to decorate one wall in my living room. Could you help point me in the right direction? The best place to start would be the internet; there are a number of companies worldwide that specialise in vintage wallpapers. Companies such as hannahstreasures.com have a wide range of designs to choose from. Design FSRE3R2 is a 1960’s yellow floral design which could be just what your looking for; they currently have 6 rolls in stock which should be enough for you to decorate one wall in your living room. www.hannahstreasures.com

Lennon Remembered

Lennon’s Mont Blanc This year, Montblanc celebrates the 70th Anniversary of John Lennon with its exclusive commemorative writing instrument. The commemorative pen is based on his genius, reflecting his iconic status through the creation of a fountain pen, ballpoint pen and a rollerball. Echoing his most recognized solo hit, the word “Imagine” rendered in a skeleton of 750 white gold, encircles the writing instrument and the blue tone of the transparent precious resin on the cap and barrel makes a fond reference to Lennon’s trademark round blue glasses. The Montblanc John Lennon Edition is available at David M Robinson Jewellers. Prices start at £455 and are available from South John Street, Liverpool ONE, 0151 708 9725, Altrincham and Southport.

TABLE TALK

“John Lennon was a genius in that he appeared to be truly independent and a driven spirit.”

MARYA MCCANN HAS LUNCH WITH.... owner of Corke Gallery, Nic Corke learnt that not only had Nic, who owns and runs Corke Gallery on Aigburth Road, shared the same secondary school as John Lennon – Quarry Bank – but also the same stage. Said Nic: ‘Before Quarry Bank I went to St Peter’s primary school in Woolton. And landing a part in the pantomime two years on the run meant I got to perform on the same stage as the Quarrymen.’

I

throughout, and settled for three dishes to share; goat’s cheese salad, a tapas platter and a bowl of wedges with dips. Marking the month that would have been John Lennon’s 70th birthday we talked about him as an artist and an inspiration. Nic talks with passion about art and creating a Liverpoolcentric space for talent to grow. Within the city’s Chamber of Commerce he is chairman of the Arts and Culture

“excellent examples of local dishes like Scouse as well as European and Asian meals.” Following in the band’s footsteps, as many a Liverpool teenage boy has done, Nick had stints as drummer into his twenties. ‘Looking back, though, I was probably the Pete Best...’ he said, self deprecatingly, as we contemplated the menu. For lunch there are light bites, seasonal specials and bar platters to choose from. The bar still has the unfussy, and simple vibe it’s always had, but the food has developed into excellent examples of local dishes like Scouse as well as European and Asian meals. We decided to take advice from our lovely waitress, who was attentive and helpful

Committee, a regular contributor on Radio Merseyside’s arts show and has masterminded a rolling series of exhibitions and events to run during the Biennial. So would he say art was pretty integral to his life? ‘I certainly get excited when I come across a talented artist living and breathing their work,’ he said. ‘Often they are the ones who are still living in poverty and working other jobs to support their art. These are the ones who really interest me and, ultimately, I’ve got no time for Sunday painters. ‘John Lennon was a genius in that he appeared to be truly independent and a driven

spirit. Decisions he made in his personal life as well as his musical life often challenged the norm and upset people. But challenge is what I think art can – and should – do well. Whilst Imagine has become universally acclaimed as a quaint tune it’s only when you listen to the words that you can hear Lennon being subversive.’ However, he cites Working Class Hero as his favourite Lennon song and feels that it still epitomises the lives of many people in Liverpool. A Lennon-inspired show at the gallery will run from December 6 – 9 marking the end of the birthday tributes to him. Until then Nic is giving university and school students the chance

to submit pieces into his final Biennial exhibition. (For details of how work may be included go his website.) In such relaxed surroundings two hours flew by as I learnt much about Liverpool art. Nic flags up a number of local artists who are currently creating exceptional work and also highlighted his concern about the way some projects are funded in the city. Over coffee he also conveyed a little of his fascinating family history (a great-grandfather who was a leading unionist in the 1920s on one side and a dynasty of wealthy Liverpool builders who developed the Welsh street area of Edge Lane on the other.) As we left the bar I wondered if a book beckons...

PENNY LANE WINE BAR – LIVERPOOL 116-118 PENNY LANE, LIVERPOOL L18 1DQ –

The menu changes regularly and coming up this month will be the chef’s chicken satay, tomato curry and winter soups.

From the tapas platter we both agreed that the warm chorizo and brie was delicious and that the wedges had been cooked to perfection. The goat’s cheese was one of the creamiest and pungent I have tasted and blended beautifully with the croutons.
