WHAT CAUSES AGE-RELATED HEARING LOSS? Age-related hearing loss, medically known as presbycusis, is a prevalent form of sensorineural hearing impairment that emerges as individuals advance in years. It manifests as a gradual, progressive condition, typically affecting both ears with varying degrees of severity. The causes of age-related hearing loss are multifaceted and encompass a range of factors that include changes that include the following: 1. Changes in the Inner Ear Structures: The natural aging process is a primary instigator of age-related hearing loss. Over time, the inner ear's structures, particularly the cochlea, experience degenerative changes. This deterioration can involve damage to or the loss of hair cells, which are essential for translating sound vibrations into electrical signals processed by the brain. 2. Cumulative Noise Exposure: Lifelong exposure to loud sounds damages the delicate cochlear hair cells, accumulating over time to result in hearing impairment. 3. Genetic Factors: Genetic predisposition plays a role. Individuals with a family history of hearing loss are more susceptible to developing it as they age. 4. Vascular Changes: Alterations in blood flow and circulation to the inner ear can influence hearing. Reduced blood supply to the cochlea can lead to oxygen and nutrient deprivation, damaging hair cells and auditory nerves. 5. Exposure to Ototoxic Medications: Certain drugs, such as antibiotics, diuretics, and chemotherapy agents, can be ototoxic, potentially harming the inner ear and exacerbating age-related hearing loss. 6. Changes in the Central Auditory System: Age-related transformations in the central auditory pathways, responsible for processing sound signals in the brain, can further contribute to hearing difficulties. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is generally irreversible. Once the delicate cochlear hair cells or auditory nerve cells are damaged or lost, they cannot regenerate or self-repair. What happens if you do not wear hearing aids that are prescribed to you, for your hearing loss? The implications of a hearing loss diagnosis and the choice not to use prescribed hearing aids can be profound. It's crucial to understand the potential consequences: 1. Communication Difficulties: Hearing loss makes comprehending spoken conversations, especially in noisy

4

settings or amidst multiple speakers, challenging. 2. Social Isolation: Untreated hearing loss often leads to social withdrawal and isolation, as difficulties communicating with friends and family result in frustration, embarrassment, and loneliness. 3. Reduced Quality of Life: Previously enjoyed activities such as watching movies, attending gatherings, or engaging in hobbies that involve listening may become less enjoyable. 4. Cognitive Decline: Research suggests a connection between untreated hearing loss and cognitive decline, including an elevated risk of conditions like dementia. 5. Emotional Impact: Increased stress, anxiety, and depression can result from the struggle to hear and communicate effectively, impacting mental well-being. 6. Relationship Strain: Hearing loss can strain relationships with loved ones and colleagues, as misunderstandings and communication difficulties lead to frustration and tension. 7. Decreased Job Performance: In a professional context, untreated hearing loss can impede job performance, hindering career advancement due to challenges in hearing instructions, participating in meetings, and communicating with peers and clients. 8. Safety Concerns: Hearing loss can jeopardize one's ability to hear critical environmental sounds like alarms, sirens, and approaching vehicles, posing safety risks in various scenarios. 9. Increased Risk of Falls: Older adults with hearing loss face an augmented risk of falls, primarily due to difficulties in hearing balance cues or warnings from others, leading to accidents. 10. Progressive Hearing Loss: Neglecting treatment can result in a further decline in hearing ability, as some forms of hearing loss worsen over time. It is imperative to recognize that hearing aids are effective tools for managing hearing loss, substantially enhancing the ability to hear and communicate. Modern hearing aids are discreet and technologically advanced, making them user-friendly and less obtrusive than older models. If you suspect you have hearing loss, consulting with an audiologist for a comprehensive evaluation is advisable. Taking proactive steps to address hearing loss can significantly contribute to maintaining a higher quality of life and overall well-being.

Can Anyone Wear an Invisible Hearing Aid? Invisible hearing aids, also known as Invisible-in-Canal (IIC) or Completely-in-Canal (CIC) hearing aids, are designed to be very discreet as they fit deep inside the ear canal making them virtually invisible to others. These types of hearing aids are custom-made to fit an individual’s ear canal, which means they can be a suitable option for many people with hearing loss. Here are some factors that may determine whether an invisible hearing aid is suitable: 1. Ear Canal Size and Shape: The size and shape of the ear canal plays a significant role in determining whether an invisible hearing aid can be comfortably and securely fitted. Some individuals may have ear canals that are too small or too irregularly shaped for this type of hearing aid. 2. Degree of Hearing Loss: Invisible hearing aids are typically designed for mild to moderate hearing loss. If someone has a severe or profound hearing loss, they may require a more powerful hearing aid that may not be suitable for an invisible design.

3. Ear Health and Anatomy: Conditions such as chronic ear infections, excessive earwax, or abnormal ear anatomy may limit the use of these devices. 4. Lifestyle and Preferences: Some people may prefer more visible hearing aids with larger controls, while others value the discreet nature of invisible hearing aids. 5. Manual Dexterity: Invisible hearing aids are small and can be more challenging to handle, insert, and remove, especially for individuals with limited manual dexterity. It is important for anyone considering a hearing aid to undergo a thorough hearing evaluation and consultation with an audiologist or hearing healthcare professional. They can assess your specific needs, ear anatomy, and hearing loss characteristics to determine the most appropriate type of hearing aid for you. They can also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of invisible hearing aids and help you make an informed decision based on your individual circumstances.

We are now offering a risk free, money back guarantee on invisible hearing aids at Hear Pure in Heswall. Call for a free appointment on 0151 342 6325.

OMEGA-3: AN ESSENTIAL FATTY ACID Working as a healthcare researcher for over 16 years means that I have reviewed many articles within the area of nutrition and health. However, few subjects have gathered as much attention as the Omega-3 essential fatty acids. There have been 26,685 peer reviewed research articles published since 2008 on this topic. The scientific community is in no doubt that, as their name suggests, Omega-3s are essential for promoting physical and mental health in many areas: Heart Health: Omega-3 has been found to have cardio-protective properties. Studies have shown that regular consumption of Omega-3-rich foods or supplements can reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering triglyceride levels, reducing blood pressure and improving cholesterol profiles. Brain Function & Mental Health: Omega-3s are critical for brain health throughout life. They are essential for the healthy development of a baby’s brain and eyes. They are also linked to improved cognitive function, mood regulation and reduced risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

ensure that sufficient Omega-3 is added into your diet. Omega-3 Testing It is now possible to test your Omega-3 status at home without needing to see the doctor. A simple dry blood spot test provided by Zinzino can be taken to reveal your Omega-3/6 balance and Omega-3 index. Regardless of your test result, the good news is that your Omega-3 status can be altered within a few months through a corrective supplement program. By recognising the vital importance of Omega-3 fatty acids, we can take proactive steps towards a healthier life. Dr Jennifer Kirton, BSc (Hons), MSc, PGCE, PhD Healthcare Researcher Further information on Omega-3 & testing Contact: 07796 155 825 or scan the QR code. https://www.zinzino.com/2013701532

Inflammation: Chronic inflammation is linked to a host of diseases including cancer, arthritis and auto-immune conditions. The Omega-3s reduce inflammation by competing with the pro-inflammatory Omega 6s in the body and help to maintain a healthy balance. Given all these health benefits, it is easy to understand why Omega-3s are essential for our health and wellbeing. How do we Ensure we Get Enough Omega-3 in Our Diet? Unfortunately, our bodies cannot synthesise Omega-3 and therefore we must obtain it through food or supplements. Omega-3 is obtained from two different food sources: Marine Based Omega-3: Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are found in fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines and herring. Plant Based Omega-3: Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) can be found in flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, canola oil, soybeans and soy products and leafy greens such as spinach and kale. Supplements: Many people consume Omega-3 supplements as they do not feel able to include enough Omega-3 rich foods into their diet. There are countless supplements available for Omega-3, however research studies have been inconclusive in ascertaining their effectiveness. Therefore, caution must be taken when selecting a supplement as they do not all provide the health benefits promised. However, high quality supplements can help to WIRRAL WELL

TIPS FOR WELLNESS THIS AUTUMN Autumn is here and the trees are about to show why it’s okay to let things go! With this change in seasons comes shorter days and cooler weather. Thankfully, we don’t need to curl up and hibernate just yet! Autumn is a wonderful time to set new intentions for self care, begin a new wellness routine or revamp what you have been doing for while. The Christmas holidays will be here before you know it and prioritising self care now will help you stay on track during those even busier winter months. In Eastern Medicine, Autumn is regarded as a time to pull our energy inward to prepare for winter. Autumn is about layering up and slowing down. It’s normal during this transition to feel a sense of loss as the light fades, but a great way to cheer yourself up is to spend some time outdoors and enjoy the gorgeous colours. Cultivating balance is key during any transition. Do you notice how many people tend to get sick in the Autumn and Winter seasons? Often, it’s because we’re depleted, not living in alignment with the season and in serious need of rest. Recognising that we are part of the cycle of nature and that there is a time to put our energy outward (Spring and Summer) and a time to draw our energy inward (Autumn and Winter) sets the foundation for a sustainable wellness practice. Making even slight lifestyle adjustments to our everyday rituals will support our wellbeing on many levels. Once the summer energy is far behind us it can be hard to get motivated to take care of ourselves. The more you can prepare now, the more likely it is that you will be able to stay on track during those cold, darker months ahead. GET PLENTY OF REST Sleep is essential to keeping us happy and healthy. Studies show that over time, lack of quality sleep impairs the immune system which makes us more susceptible to colds and viruses that frequently float around during those cooler months. KEEP IT SIMPLE Don’t go overboard setting crazy goals for yourself. It’s important to consider our obligations and what our current schedule looks like when we’re in the goal setting process. In the long run it’s more beneficial to set goals that are reachable, and then add on from there. CHECK YOUR VITAMIN D LEVELS We get the majority of our vitamin D from the sun. Naturally our intake decreases in cooler months from spending more time indoors. Vitamin D increases fertility keeps our bones strong and supports the immune system. We

8

WIRRAL WELL

BEING

see many people in clinic who have muscular aches and pains and often it is low vitamin D levels which is the cause. Schedule a visit with your doctor to check your vitamin D levels so you can know how much you need to supplement with. This is a very routine test with a quick turnaround time for results. NOURISH WITH SEASONAL FOODS Squash, dark leafy greens, apples, beets, soups, and stews are all great places to start. Autumn is an ideal season to spend some time in the kitchen preparing your favourite nourishing foods. Autumn is a great time to enjoy warmer meals prepared with love. Set aside a few hours each weekend to prepare some of your favourite foods for the week. My favourite is homemade chicken soup using the carcass to make the broth and packed full of dark leafy greens and beans. LEARN TO SAY NO! Over committing is something we all do! No is a very powerful word, much more powerful than YES! Look at where and what you are spending your time on or at, and what you would like to change in your week. Do you feel you never take time for yourself, do you always say yes and then have a feeling of regret. Saying no is not selfish, but often necessary to not use all your energy reserves up for other people, family, friends, events etc. What can you say NO to and be happy with your decision? Wear that scarf, hat, and glove set. Not only are they fashionable but they keep us from loosing body heat, preventing chills that lead to many sniffles and cold in the winter months. Drink more teas and hot drinks to keep warm incorporating some of your favourite sessional flavours. Ginger, cinnamon, cardamon, vanilla are especially refreshing at this time of year.

THE GUIDANCE COMPANY A few weeks back, I sat down with a good friend of mine (full

of business growth, leadership, operations, and culture.

disclosure) to talk about their new business, The Guidance

I decided to do an interview style format, so I met up in the Otto Lounge in Heswall with Lee O’Carroll, owner of the Guidance Company.

Laura: Hi Lee, how have you been, what have you been up to?

Lee: I’m good, the family are all good, still wrecking my head (more like I’m wrecking theirs) but they're all well, so yeah, all’s good with me.

Covid change my perspective somewhat, so I exited my previous company on good terms and retained my equity, took a break,

followed the sun and went travelling with my best mate, Emma for

a few months. Right now, I’m just mad busy with the new company I’ve started.

Laura: Alright for some, I love Emma :) New Business? That's interesting, what’s it about?

Lee: It’s called The Guidance Company and it helps business

leaders and senior managers solve their most pressing business problems, specifically in the areas of Growth, Leadership, Operations and Culture.

It provides straight forward, actionable solutions that have a real impact on a business. No waffle, no BS, just proper advice, and guidance that adds value, clarity and direction. Laura: What is your background, Lee?

Lee: Professionally, for the past 20 odd years, as CEO and CMO, I’ve built, managed, merged, and sold several businesses within the

B2C and B2B technology sector ranging from 5 figure start-ups to 7 figure enterprises.

Prior to that, I worked in the family jewellery, check cashing and pawnbroking business and prior to that, I spent 7 years as a Submariner.

I actually started my first business in a small retail space in Heswall offering website design solutions back in the late 90s when Google just kicked off.

Laura: All that experience can’t come cheap Lee, are the services and solutions being offered expensive?

Lee: That’s a very subjective question. It’s not whether a solution is expensive, it’s about the value that’s brought to the table.

Here’s an example, a business owner / management know that

their business needs to be more focused and more efficient. If they received a solution that made their business more agile, more

productive, and more effective and that solution led to improving the company margins by say 12K a month - What would that solution / guidance be worth? £12K ,£3K, £1K?

It’s always value first and the impact that value brings, followed

by whether the cost for that value makes sense. In that example, anyone of the costs would make absolute sense.

Laura: Why have you decided to start The Guidance Company? Lee: Because I believe it’s needed. Because it solves a problem. Laura: Ok, but what's the problem Lee?

The short version… In my experience, there is too much mediocrity, too many solutions that are half ass and that don’t live up to the

promise. Too much BS, waffle, showboating, kidology, and generally just poor advice.

Business owners and management are busy people. What they

want are solutions that address the pain points within the business. Solutions that add real, measurable value.

WIRRAL WELL

Solutions that cut through the waffle and noise. Solutions that deal with the actual business pain points.

BEING

Laura: I hear that there’s a podcast on its way, spill the beans… Lee: How did you know that….Yeah, it’s called The Autistic

Entrepreneur (The EA) Podcast and it’s something that I have wanted to do for a few years but have only now found the confidence and belief to give it a go.

Laura: Sounds interesting, what’s it going to be about?

In a nutshell, I want it to be a platform that enables open

discussion about the challenges (and benefits IMO) of being and living with being neurodivergent. It want it to be 100% authentic,

casual, open minded, worldly and a place where anyone can tell their story.

It will probably carry a PG cert due to my years living in Ireland

where good banter, swearing and having the craic has become part of my DNA.

Laura: I can testify to the swearing and banter bit :)

Lee: I’m also a high-functioning autistic person so I appreciate what being neurodivergent means and how it impacts people within the workplace and with their general well-being.

I’ve also lived with depression for as long as I can remember whilst juggling the demands of running various businesses.

I’d like to think I can offer some real value to people who find

themselves in the same boat and I want The AE to be the platform to do this.

Laura: That sounds amazing, I’d love to come on the show. Lee: And I’d be delighted to have you :) Laura: When is the podcast going live?

Lee: I’m aiming for the start of November.

Laura: Well Lee, it sounds like you’re as busy as ever. It’s been

great to catch up and find out what you’ve been up to Lee. Thanks for the interview, I’m sure our readers will be interested in the business end of things and the podcast.

Laura: How can people get in touch with the company and or the podcast?

Lee: Yeah, nice to catch up, next time, let’s make it all about you!! You buying the coffee’s I mean.

ANDY MCCLUSKEY - OMD To my delight the legendry Andy McCluskey took time out of his busy schedule for a Q&A and a chat about his upcoming tour and exciting new album. What a pleasure it was to talk to the Wirral star and get an insight into his longstanding successful career and plans for the future before he runs off to perform on The Jools Holland show. Q. Where did the name Orchestra Manoeuvres in the Dark come from? A. “It was made up, we wanted something completely different like the style of electronic music we were making. It was a taken from amalgamation of music that we were listening to and song ideas from my bedroom wall. We had landed our first gig at Eric’s Club in Liverpool over the road from the Cavern Club and needed to come up with a name fast and it was the weirdest we could think of at the time”. Q. Why do you think you have stayed so successful in the industry for so long? A. “Well we certainly didn’t expect it, we genuinely though it would just be that one gig. Paul and I were ready to go off and do other things! But the music was a hit, and we were good at what we did with a knack for writing catchy tunes”. Q. Tell us about the Phone box in Meols and the bands association with it? A. “When Paul and I were teenagers no one really had house phone, so the phone box was our office if you like. We used it to call friends, musicians, record companies, the manager, arrange gigs. The first record deal was made from that phone box. With references and the phone number even appearing in the song Red Frame/ White Lights. Many years later when the phone company tried to remove the box in Meols there was an uproar from locals resulting in the phone box still remining to this day as truite to the band with its mini museum inside”. Q. Who influences your music as a band and who do you listen to today? A. “I think the music you grow up listening to is still part of your journey today, Roxy Music, The Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk. These were some of my music influences and bands that I still like to listen to date.” Q. Tell us about your up-and-coming tour? A. “It’s all very exciting. The biggest UK and European tour starting off earlier in the new year. Sharing our latest single “Slow Train” from upcoming Album “Bauhaus Staircase” We are really looking forward to it and tickets are selling fast, with some still available and we can’t wait to play to the audiences again.”

14

WIRRAL WELL

BEING

Q. Is there somewhere on the tour you are most looking forward to going? A. “We are looking forward to the whole thing, although thrilled to be playing at the Arena again as it’s been 10 years since we were last there and obviously we love Liverpool its part of us and our heritage. Excited for Glasgow and the 02 Area as it’s the biggest venue but we always give 100% to everyone, every gig, and every location.” Q. Do you get alone on tour? A. You have to get along! We enjoy touring and getting out to see the fans playing to a live crowd is what’s its all about for us”. Q. Do you have a creative process when writing a new song or Album. A. “Two things, you need something to inspire you. Then you need the music to inspire you. You can write the lyric’s but until you have the music that sounds great how do you know if the words fit. The words are always last for me”. Q How did you get involved with Atomic Kitten and come to write the song “Whole again”. “Well, I had retired to be at home with my son when he was born. But wanting to create a new vehicle for songs and develop new artists Atomic Kitten was formed. It was crazy, fun, hard work and with lots of ups and downs with Kerry leaving the band and coming back again. I am very proud of that song.” Q How do you think the industry has changed and would you like to be starting out today? A. It’s a very different place today. I wouldn’t want to be starting out today. Its much harder today than it was. It’s almost like musicians must create their own interest and platforms before anyone will take them on.” We are grateful to speak to Andy and would like to thank him for his time. I can’t wait to see him in action again.

BAUHAUS STAIRCASE - OMD Six years since the release of their critically-acclaimed, Top 4-charting The Punishment Of Luxury, synth pioneers Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) return with their brand new studio album Bauhaus Staircase - out October 27th. The album’s first offering is the title track, which serves as a nod both to Andy McCluskey’s love of the Bauhaus era & the power of protest art. It’s available today - Watch the animated video HERE. “I am a huge lover of visual arts, especially mid 20th century movements,” Andy comments. “The song is a metaphor for strength and artist passion in the face of criticism and adversity. When times are hard, there is a tendency for Governments to look at cutting funding for creativity, just at the moment when the arts are most needed to nourish our souls. It seems appropriate that the song and its eponymous album were created during Covid Lockdown.”

By rights, OMD should be in semi-retirement, performing classics like Enola Gay and Maid Of Orleans on the nostalgia festival circuit like so many peers. Instead, they’ve created a landmark album worthy of their finest work. If real life meant OMD were happy to get help, Bauhaus Staircase remains unmistakably the work of a duo who are still perfectly in sync 45 years after their first gig at legendary Liverpool club Eric’s. “I’m very happy with what we’ve done on this record,” McCluskey summarises. “I’m comfortable if this is OMD’s last statement.”

It arrives as the band’s most explicitly political record and the crowning achievement of their desire to be both Stockhausen and Abba - born from the impetus to kickstart new explorations during lockdown when, as Andy McCluskey admits: “I rediscovered the creative power of total boredom.” Predominantly written, recorded, and mixed by both McCluskey & Paul Humphreys (who has recently become a second-time father), Bauhaus Staircase’s other main external influence was David Watts, mainly known as a rock producer who helmed Sheffield band The Reytons’ recent No 1 album and mixed two tracks on the new OMD record. Ranging from the beautiful film noir ballad of ‘Veruschka’, to ‘Anthropocene’ - a term for the current epoch in Earth’s evolution, to the sinister ‘Evolution Of Species’, and the hectic ‘Kleptocracy’ - OMD’s greatest straight-up protest song - the new album is a broad, electronic, sonic masterpiece that lyrically tackles the topics of the future. The record closes on ‘Healing’ - a moment of reflective calm and a rare OMD co-write, with lyrics by McCluskey’s friend, Liverpool singer-songwriter Caroline England, and production from ATOM TM. OMD have sold an astonishing 25 million singles and 15 million albums, which has established them as electronic synthesiser pioneers and one of Britain’s best-loved pop groups. Their 13 albums include reissued ‘Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark’ (1980), ‘Organisation’ (1980), ‘Architecture & Morality’ (1981) and ‘Dazzle Ships’ (1983).

It offers free parking, a shared kitchen space and Living room, outside area and main bathroom with free standing bath, the main bedroom is equipped with a fabulous ensuite and toiletries. Each room is done to perfection with Sky tv and movies, clean and comfortable with the best linen and most certainly the most comfortable bed I have slept in so far! Dale Lloyd the host and creator behind this amazing establishment was extremely hospitable, the cupboards and fridge were stocked with treats, and he was attentive without being intrusive. Dales’ attention to detail and willingness to please guests is admiral and he offers local recommendations and options for bars and meals whilst

THE GIFT OF PRESENCE As we head into a new season, I really wanted to share with you something I talk about each year at this time, and share it as a reminder, plus the real reason it’s my favourite season. People often laugh when I tell them this is my favourite time of year because they automatically assume it’s because of Christmas. When I tell them, it’s because I love that the world slows down, gets present and connects more, they laugh at me like the big guy in the story. Spooky season, followed by bonfire season, followed by Christmas, and a whole host of other beautiful festivals in between. I love it all, not because of one particular festival, or day, or event, but because it is about presence and connection. This time of year asks us to slow down, to get really present, to get into our natural state, after all, we are nature. It acts like a reset for the Heart and Soul, and how we are meant to exist in the world. When we slow down, we invite the people around us to slow down too. When we get more present, we invite the people around us to get more present. Our energy sets the tone. It’s not just about being the change, but embodying the change. Your presence for yourself, firstly, and then the people around you, is the best thing you can give this holiday season. It’s about filling your own cup first, making sure you have the resources and energy to approach the season in a whole new way. It's about understanding the power of the nervous system and a regulated nervous system which allows us to make better choices, healthy choices and inspired choices. Furthermore, it allows us to flow with the changes and

things that can happen over this time. This is what true resilience is about. So how do we do this? Set an intention, ask yourself how do I want to feel this holiday season, allow that to be your direction, the navigation, for yourself, rather than a destination. Trying to achieve the way you want to feel by telling yourself you’ll only feel a certain way once you’ve achieved it, is where you end up with an unfulfilling life. Something I realised many years ago, through this practice, was that I got to connect to these intentions and energy all year around. I realised that presence and connection weren’t just for Christmas, they could be a way that I could exist in the world. In reading this, I hope you gain the permission you are looking for. In fact, I hope through it, you learn to give yourself permission to connect with the intention you want to create in the world. Save this wonderful magazine, put a fold in the corner, put it on your bedside table and allow it to serve as a reminder of presence and peace, when you wake up and when you need it through the day. And please remember, most people don’t remember what they got, they remember how they spent that time. I am Chris, the creator of the Nurture Map, a revolutionary model of wellbeing, personal development and transformation. This model uses somatic and holistic approaches founded in neuroscience, holistic psychology and embodied spirituality, as well as it being a trauma informed. I also have a podcast, Create Your Life with Chris, as well as audiobooks. TEN ACTIONABLE TIPS FOR A FULFILLING RETIREMENT: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE Retirement is often touted as our golden years—a hard-earned period for relaxation, pursuing passions, and quality family time. However, achieving a fulfilling retirement requires meticulous planning and disciplined action. This guide unpacks ten actionable tips to help you prepare for a satisfying and financially secure retirement. 1. Start Early: The Power of Time and Compound Interest The benefits of starting early can't be overstated. Time is your most significant asset, thanks to the miracle of compound interest. Let's illuminate the transformative power of starting early with real numbers. Imagine two individuals, both eyeing retirement at 65. Person A starts setting aside £150 per month from age 35, while Person B waits until they're 45 to do the same. Assuming a modest 5% annual return on their investments, by retirement, Person A would amass an impressive £122,804, whereas Person B would accumulate £61,118. That's a staggering difference of £61686! This isn't merely a head start—it's a financial leap, all thanks to the magical effect of compound interest over time. The moral of the story? Time is your most lucrative asset; start investing now to capitalise on its exponential potential. 2. Set Clear Goals: Envision Your Dream Retirement Without a clear destination, you won’t ever arrive. Therefore, it's essential to set precise objectives for your retirement. Do you envisage travelling the world, taking up a new hobby, or dedicating time to charitable causes? Having concrete goals will not only make your retirement more satisfying but also offer you a better understanding of how much you'll need to save. 3. Align with Your Partner: Team Effort in Achieving Retirement Goals If you're in a relationship, aligning your retirement goals with your partner is crucial. Open dialogue about savings strategies, timelines, and objectives ensures that you're working collectively. A united front often makes the retirement planning process less daunting and the objectives more attainable. 4. Find Your Purpose: Embracing the Japanese Concept of Ikigai Switching from a structured working life to an open-ended retirement can be challenging. One way to ease this transition is to discover a sense of purpose, inspired by the Japanese concept of Ikigai. Whether it's travelling, volunteering, or even launching a small business, find activities that keep you engaged and fulfilled.

8. Prioritise Physical and Mental Health In the pursuit of financial freedom, the importance of health often takes a backseat. Utilise your free time to invest in physical activities like walking, swimming, or joining a local gym and working with a personal trainer. Don't ignore mental well-being; consider mindfulness techniques or even hobbies that stimulate the mind, such as puzzles, reading, or painting. A healthy body and mind are invaluable assets that will enable you to fully enjoy your retirement years. 9. Create a Contingency Plan: Prepare for the Unforeseen Life is unpredictable, and the unexpected can happen at any stage, including during retirement. Whether it's an unforeseen medical expense or urgent repairs to your home, having a contingency fund is critical. Financial experts in the UK recommend setting aside at least six months' worth of living expenses as an emergency fund. Furthermore, it might be prudent to consider insurance options, such as critical illness cover or income protection, to safeguard against future uncertainties. 10. Keep Learning and Growing: The World is Your Oyster Retirement is not the end but a new beginning, an opportunity to explore areas you may have been too busy to delve into previously. Whether it's taking adult education classes, learning a new language, or even starting a part-time job in a field you're passionate about, the possibilities are endless. Remember, age is just a number, and it's never too late to learn something new or to reinvent yourself. By incorporating these additional tips into your retirement planning strategy, you're not just setting the stage for financial security. You're paving the way for a comprehensive, fulfilling lifestyle that benefits your emotional, social, and physical well-being. Start today to secure a retirement that truly represents your golden years. 5. Understand the Cost: Budgeting for a Thriving Retirement Knowing the financial aspects of your dream retirement is essential. Create a budget that includes not just the basics like housing and essential expenses but also any additional costs for your envisioned lifestyle. This will help you get a realistic grasp on the amount you need to save to truly enjoy your later years. 6. Seek Professional Guidance: Navigate the Complexities with Expert Help Retirement planning involves various investment options, tax implications, and ever-changing regulations. Consulting a financial adviser can offer you tailored advice that aligns with your specific financial objectives and retirement goals. The aim is to stop mistakes occurring in the complex world of pensions and make sure your taking advantage of all opportunities. 7. Foster Social Connections: Community is Key While we often focus on the financial aspects of retirement, we mustn't overlook the social dimensions. A fulfilling retirement is one where you're not just financially comfortable, but also socially engaged. The UK has an array of clubs, social groups, and volunteer organisations where you can meet like-minded individuals. Make it a point to stay socially active, whether it’s through regular meetups with old friends, or by making new ones through community engagement. Social connections are proven to improve mental health and overall well-being, making them an integral part of a fulfilling retirement.

Proper foot care is important, yet it is easy to forget that your feet bear the brunt of most of the activities that you perform while standing upright. Over time, ignoring your feet can lead to serious problems such as chronic pain that limits your ability to enjoy your normal activities.

MANAGE ONGOING HEALTH CONDITIONS Certain health conditions place you at greater risk for serious foot problems. For example, diabetes can lead to dangerous infections and nerve damage that can require aggressive treatment if they are allowed to deteriorate.

While it is common to seek treatment for foot pain after an injury, it is also important to keep in mind that a visit to the podiatrist for routine foot care yields many benefits for your overall well-being.

Osteoarthritis also strikes the ankle and foot joints. Since this condition is progressive, receiving proper care early on helps you identify the best strategies for managing pain and easing joint stiffness, such as gentle stretches or insoles for your shoes.

What is a Podiatrist? Podiatrists specialise in the treatment of conditions that affect the feet and lower limbs. We treat pain, infections and mobility issues to keep you moving and actively enjoying life. Traditionally podiatry has been seen as a service accessed by older people needing help with general foot care. But podiatrists are increasingly working with young people, athletes and recreational sports enthusiasts to treat musculoskeletal concerns (affecting joints, bones and muscles) and manage injuries rather than visiting a physiotherapist. TREAT COMMON FOOT AND TOE INFECTIONS The skin on your feet is highly susceptible to several common infections because the dark and damp environment created by your shoes allows bacteria and fungus to flourish. With a fungal foot infection, you may notice things such as redness around your toes, or you may also notice itchiness or a foul odour. This can be alleviated with the correct treatment. For some people, ingrown toenails are a severe or persistent problem that's difficult to manage. Correct cutting may be the key to pain relief, however, nail surgery offers a long-term or permanent solution.

GET BACK IN THE GAME AFTER AN INJURY Foot injuries are common among athletes, which can take you away from your normal exercise routine, frustratingly you may have no idea why it began. Since your foot is a complicated system of muscles, ligaments, joints and nerves, a visit to the podiatrist is the best way to find out exactly what is wrong. Then, you can take advantage of a treatment plan that involves pain management techniques and rehabilitative exercises to get back out on the field LEARN PREVENTATIVE PRACTICES Lifestyle habits are a major contributor to foot problems, and it is possible that you do things every day that can eventually lead to chronic pain. For example, inappropriate footwear choice for what you are doing is associated with foot pain. During the pandemic, there was an increase in foot related pain being reported, this was in part due to people spending large amounts of time at home wearing slippers for the majority of the day, whilst still doing daily activities. If you feel you are in need of some help or need some advice regarding a foot related issue, why not give us a call at our podiatry practice in Hamilton Square on 0151 6477498, the home of healthy happy feet, or visit our website fitsq.co.uk for more information. HOMEOPATHY FOR MENOPAUSE What is homeopathy? Homeopathy is a system of natural and holistic medicine that has been used by millions of people for over 200 years. Even the late Queen Elizabeth II was very fond of homeopathy. In homeopathy, we treat each person as a unique individual and tailor the treatment to that person’s needs. The aim of homeopathy is to stimulate your own body’s healing ability. Homeopathic medicines are made from natural substances like plants and minerals. It can be used by people of all ages and safely taken alongside prescribed medication.

5 reasons to use homeopathy

Managing menopause naturally

Natural Gentle Safe Effective Individual

Menopause is a perfectly natural phase in a woman’s life, but it is also a time of great change both physically and emotionally. Many women pass through menopause with ease, while others suffer from a variety of unpleasant symptoms. With the help of natural medicine, I help women get through menopause and feel empowered and healthy. When supporting a woman through menopause, it is essential not only to take into consideration her physical symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats, tiredness, and dryness, but also her mental and emotional symptoms like anxiety, panic attacks, irritability, depression, insomnia, mood swings, and memory loss. Each woman's feelings about this journey will be unique. In some cases, it is a time of freedom and creativity, while others may have trouble letting go of the old self. It may be hard to accept the aging process and the physical changes that occur in the body. Other factors also play a role in the way a woman experiences menopause. Constitution, family history, environment, diet, lifestyle and stress will all have their influence on her symptoms. A homeopath always treats the individual as a whole, based on their unique symptoms. Nothing in our bodies works in isolation. Every cell, organ and system is closely connected. Having a healthy liver and digestive tract is essential to hormonal health. During menopause, the liver and gut will need extra support if there is a history of contraceptive pill, or repeated antibiotic prescriptions. Prolonged stress can indicate tired adrenal glands, which also play a very important role in hormonal health. There may also be a worsening of pre-existing chronic health problems during menopause, which we can also address with homeopathy. These can include skin conditions, digestive issues, headaches, recurrent infections, lowered immunity, and aches and pains. As well as supporting people with chronic health issues, homeopathy can also treat minor ailments like colds, coughs, ear infections, UTIs, stomach problems, and injuries. WHAT IS HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY? Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing almost pure oxygen in a special room or small chamber. Generally used by those wishing to give their body a quick boost in health & vitality. It enhances healing in people with various other conditions and energises your body, giving you the general feeling of strength & wellbeing. It is great for anti ageing, pain relief, reduce swelling, creating new stem cell production, stimulates new collagen / new tissue, creates new blood flow & circulation. HOW DOES RED LIGHT THERAPY WORK? Red light is thought to work by producing a biochemical effect in cells that strengthens the mitochondria. The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell — it’s where the cell’s energy is created. The energy-carrying molecule found in the cells of all living things is called ATP (adenosine triphosphate).
