THE TEAM

Dear Readers,

The Beginning of an End, or Vice Versa September, in the minds of some, rings only as a reminder that summer is on the verge of an inevitable conclusion. For others, myself included, September 1st brings an air of excitement; a season on the brink of change, fresh collections off the runway and a time to update your sartorial self. In MOUR’s 2013 September/October issue we spoke to you about our desire to exist as Lexington’s fashion avenue; a setting for designers, artists and boutiques to have their brands artfully admired. Acclaimed the same as the other fashion bibles arriving this month in a five pound package? Well, we shall try. Anyone else as excited to check their mail in September (a few weeks prior actually) as I am? One year later we maintain that same inclination; progressing proudly, month by month, to produce enthralling ideals of stylish indulgence to you – our delightful readers. I anticipate our finest spread to date (Sartorial Street, page 17), photographed by the lovely Cristy Elaine, will undoubtedly become one to remember. If any month should tingle your fashion senses, let it be September. We love to hear your feedback! Send your comments and questions to info@mourmagazine.com with ‘Letters to the Editor’ in the subject line.

Editor, Tamra Graves’, fall uniform inspiration.

Q:

I tend to get very bummed when it’s time to start dressing for fall. I get so bored! Is there any way have fun with my wardrobe this fall? -Susan

A:

You’re not alone, Susan! Many ladies dread the onset of this time of year. While a great deal of new and exciting collections break into the world, some feel like our color palette and silhouettes become redundant in the fall and winter. Luckily, this season, bright and bold are everywhere! There’s no better way to amp up your wardrobe and have a little fun than with a bright statement of color. That fuchsia dress hanging in your closet that seems only summer appropriate, nope, pull it out. Lime green accented print, yes – that one too!

XO, Lexi

MOUR FASHION

meet the pro

This month we got to know Halie Rogers, the woman behind one of Lexington’s hottest shopping spots, Morton James. With beauty, business savvy, and an eye for killer fashion, Rogers is a force to be reckoned with. Rogers, hailing from Pikeville and, more recently, Nashville, has proven to be a unique asset to the Lexington fashion community making her effortless, chic style available to everyone through Morton James. Moments after meeting with Rogers at her boutique for the photo shoot, we are giddily thumbing through the one-of-a-kind pieces and she proudly shows off the store’s new stock of Bella Dahl items. She makes me touch each piece to prove to me how soft Bella Dahl denim is (they are indeed unbelievably soft). Her own shirt is Bella Dahl and she has me feel that too. Bella Dahl is just one of many high quality labels that are carried at Morton James. French Connection, Rogers informs me, is another of the store’s popular brands. The store is welcoming, with a décor that is sleek with rustic accents (at one point during Roger’s photo shoot I bump my head into a small pair of antlers mounted on the wall and we both have a laugh). One wall of the store is made up, almost entirely, of shelves of jeans. Rogers rattles off the names of some of her favorite designer jeans the store carries, including Seven for All Mankind, Adriano Goldschmied and Citizens of Humanity, also commenting that denim is one of the store’s biggest sellers.

Even though the store is coming up on its first anniversary, it is easy to see that the excitement about Morton James has not worn off on Rogers. It was a pleasure to share in that passion with her as she talked about life, fashion and seeing her dream of owning a boutique come true. Tell us about a little bit about yourself. Most probably know this by now but the little 7 year old bouncing off the walls at the store on a regular basis is my son, Hudson. He gets to hang with mom at work quite a bit! Aside from work and Hudson, I love photography, cooking, sushi and coffee. I have to have my morning coffee! Where are you originally from and how did you come to end up in Lexington? I’m originally from Pikeville, Kentucky. I moved to Lexington in 2005 to attend the University of Kentucky. I moved to Nashville, Tennessee for a couple of years and then eventually made my way back to Lexington last summer to open Morton James.

Morton James is such an elegant name. What is the story behind the name? Thanks! Morton is actually my middle name. I was named after my grandfather, Earnest Morton and James is my dad’s name and is in my brother’s name as well. It’s funny because I hated my middle name as a child. My dad has always called me “Mort” and although I hated that equally as much as Morton, I’ve grown to love them both. I wanted to use a name for the store that meant something more to me, so it seemed natural to use family names. I scribbled it on paper several times to make sure it was “the one” and that’s ultimately how we got our logo. We couldn’t find a font that seemed to fit so we just kept it in my handwriting to make it even more personal.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life? Fashion influence or otherwise. Definitely my mom. I can remember her saying “less is always more” and I think that’s reflected in my style quite a bit. She drilled that into my head when it came to makeup, emphasizing how natural is always better but I think that can be said for fashion as well. Simple pieces can often make the loudest statement.

What is your favorite memory you have at Morton James? Definitely our opening day. I remember feeling so proud when I saw the store from the outside for the first time. We had worked so hard for months so seeing how it all came together was really cool. I remember just standing there in disbelief- I couldn’t believe we pulled off something so amazing. It was the best feeling!

What are some of your favorite trends right now? I don’t consider myself trendy what so ever. However, I am loving crop tops with matching skirts/shorts. I won’t be trying to pull that off anytime soon but I like seeing how everyone else wears it! I’m also a fan of jumpsuits. I just purchased my first one and can’t wait to wear it. With fun shoes, jewelry and jackets, you can literally find a million different ways to style it!

How has a typical week at Morton James changed since first opening? When did you first open? We opened in October of 2013. I can’t believe it’s almost been a year! The first few months were pretty hectic but after we settled into a routine things became way easier. If Julia hadn’t been there to help with every last detail I’m not sure I could have made it! She’s a pro when it comes to retail and I was literally just starting so she was a huge, huge help.

Let’s talk about Morton James a bit. How is your own style reflected in the clothes at Morton James? When Julia [the store manager] and I are at market, it’s almost as if we are on a shopping spree. Very rarely do we purchase something that we don’t love. Of course there are a few items we buy because we think someone with different a style will like them, but for the most part everything in Morton James is something we are dying to have in our own closet! We both have such a broad range of style so it’s nice because you can find classic pieces you can keep for years to come, along with trendier items to experiment with.

By Andrea Schurr Photos by Paul Bradley

Morton James has such a supportive following on social media with your Facebook page and Instagram. In fact, my first encounter with Morton James was online. How did you come to have such a strong online presence? [We would] be crazy not to take advantage of Facebook and Instagram. Often we stay so busy with work, family and other activities so it’s hard to make time to run in and out of stores. We do, however, check our phones on a regular basis whether it be at a red light, in a waiting room or the car line at school. So we post pictures in hopes that you’ll love everything as much as we do! We know that everyone can’t come in on a weekly basis so posting outfits is a good way to keep everyone updated on new shipments, products and brands! We also have quite a few customers from out of state so it gives them a chance to see our favorite pieces as well!

What aspect of owning a boutique do you enjoy most—the business side or the fashion side? That shouldn’t even be a question! [Laughs] Definitely the fashion side! What can we expect to see in the future for Morton James? I have so many ideas brewing but for now I’m just excited for the first year to be in the books. It’s been such a fun learning experience- I can’t wait to see what year two has in store for us! We think shopping local is so important. Why do you think shopping local is important? My dad has always preached about how important it is to shop local but I don’t think I ever realized how important it really is until now. Morton James couldn’t and wouldn’t exist without the help of the people in our community. I am so grateful that everyone here has been nice enough to give us the opportunity to live out a dream. What are some of your other favorite local places to shop? Luckily for us, there are so many great places to shop here in Lexington! Most are located near Morton James which makes it really easy to hit us all up at once! A.J’s Casuals, Monkees, Voce and Omar + Elsie are all really close clothing boutiques that carry different brands and have their own individual style so it’s easy to find lots of options! Shine on Vine is a new jewelry store that I’m a tad obsessed with! And lastly, I love Adele, For Friends, Worlds Apart, L.V.Harkness and Peggy’s to find home goods and gift items! I could literally go on and on about places here in Lexington...don’t even get me started on all of the amazing food you can find here!

HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY? My mom was a model for a short time before I was born and I always admired fashion. When I was 18 I went to New York City to see agencies and they told me I was too short. When I was 19 I tried out for Americas Next Top Model and made it to runner-up and that kick started everything. Since then I have modeled in NYC, LA, Miami, Hawaii, Greece, Toronto and Mexico. WE KNOW THAT YOUR TALENTS EXTEND FAR BEYOND DESIGN ALONE. CAN YOU SHARE WITH US WHAT ALL YOU HAVE YOUR HANDS IN? I also dance, it is my favorite past time. It’s something I do to just feel good and be happy. WHAT CURRENT PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON? Currently I’ve dropped a few of my projects because I am in Mexico modeling with Paragon Model Management. I will have my modeling workshop in December. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? Boho, minimalistic and lots of neutral colors. Black, white and tan are my friends! WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP? H&M! You can get basic needs, current trends and the company itself has good values. WE WERE ABLE TO ATTEND LAST YEAR’S FASHION ANGELS CHARITY SHOW AND LOVED IT! WILL YOU BE HOSTING ANOTHER SIMILAR EVENT ANY TIME SOON? Yes I will! I plan on a show once a year at least and hope to share new dates with you soon! WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO HANG WHEN YOU’RE IN LEXINGTON? Street scene, Ali Ann Photography Studio, Al’s Bar, Good food co-op. I just can’t pick one. www.laurakirkpatrick.com 14

fall trends

SNEAKERHEAD SHEAR HEAVEN The consensus was clear on what the fur of the season would be as designers from New York to Milan swathed models in luxurious shearling. New York offered an AllAmerican approach to the trend with designers like Ralph Lauren showing a rugged, leather jacket lined with shearling and Altuzarra’s designs echoing those of the classic brand Patagonia.

KNIT CLUB Knitwear might seem like an obvious choice for fall, but this season the ageold sweater was revamped. Designers didn’t limit themselves to a cardigan here or there but instead piled on the layers with knit dresses, pants and scarves, oh my! Combat the bulk of multiple layers by opting for tailored knits à la Marc Jacobs and Céline, leaving you looking slender but still ensuring a cozy autumn. 24

Your feet can breathe a sigh of relief as sneakers made an appearance in a multitude of collections. The trend was first introduced on the spring runways and has managed to stake its claim as one that is here to stay; evidenced by the kicks sported at Chanel and Marc by Marc Jacobs.

It’s a Mod World Designers gave a nod to mod with shortened hemlines and Go-Go-esque boots. The trend proved to be anything but old as the swinging ‘60s were revitalized with classic retro silhouettes in unexpected materials and hues. There were pastel blue, leather minidresses at Gucci and crystal encrusted, hot pink Chelsea boots at Saint Laurent. Trends made especially for the ultimate cool girl.

LITE BRITE The weather outside might start to look a little drab come fall, but that doesn’t mean your wardrobe should. Counter the gray skies with an unexpected pop of color. Might I suggest Dior or Thakoon for inspiration? A little color for fall is sure to brighten your day and others’ around you.

SEEING RED Resist the urge to gravitate towards neutral clothing for fall and make a statement in red. Leave the predictable beiges and grays behind and go all out in a monochromatic red look like the ones seen at Prada and Prabal Gurung. The distinction of color amid the more muted tones will leave everyone wondering, “Who’s that girl?”

MOUR FASHION

WRAP STAR

ART MAJOR You don’t have to have an art history degree to appreciate fall’s art influenced collections. Painterly brushstrokes adorned coats and handbags at Burberry Prorsum, while Dries Van Noten opted for more graphic prints and 3-D flower corsages. The results are worthy of the most renowned museums.

HEAVY METAL Crystals, sequins and paillettes made an appearance in numerous collections, proving that shimmering ensembles are no longer relegated to nights out and New Year’s Eve. The key to pulling off sparkle in the daytime is to keep it subtle and add a glittering touch to an understated outfit.

While it’s not exactly socially acceptable to venture outside of the house in your robe, you can don a robe coat this fall. The silhouette was seen parading down the Chloé, Altuzarra and Richard Chai Love runways, to name a few. The coats’ oversized shapes are perfect for the chilly months ahead and when cinched at the waist they give immediate definition. It’s the best of both worlds: comfort and style!

BIRDS OF PARADISE The fashion industry’s latest pet of choice was found fluttering its way across capes, coats and tops at Valentino, Giles, Markus Lupfer and Marchesa Voyage. Birds of a fashion feather flock together, right?

The Hemingway Daiquiri

MIX IT UP

This month I was asked to create a cocktail inspired by fashion. My first thought was the evolution of fashion and how trends are reinvented time and time again. For example, this month’s cocktail, the Hemingway Daiquiri, is a classic. The original Hemingway represents what a daiquiri was intended to be. Our recipe below is a riff on this long-loved bevvy. A traditional Hemingway includes white rum, lime juice, grapefruit juice and Maraschino Cherry Liqueur. We modernized this delicious beverage by substituting coconut rum and fresh orange juice.

Ingredients:

2 oz. Coconut Rum ½ oz. Maraschino Cherry Liqueur ¾ oz. fresh lime juice ½ oz. fresh orange juice Lime wedge Orange pe el

Combine all ingredients with ice in shaker.

Shake well and strain into martini glass. Garnish with lime wedge and orange pe el. 29

MOUR LIFE

Article & Photos by Jessica Caudill It’s the perfect place to live out your fantasies of sitting down to tea with the women of Downton Abbey or solving riddles with a mad Hatter over bread and butter- if you can find it. An unassuming pale green house sits quietly on West Short Street behind a wrought iron fence. A small sign that reads “Greentree Antiques & Tearoom” hangs from the lamp post in the yard as a small courtesy to guests to keep them from circling the block. Inside, the house is separated into two sections: the antique showroom on the left, the tea room on the right, with charming sconces and delicate furniture (imagine Grandma’s house, if Grandma’s house were an upscale cottage.) In the center of the room full of white linen-dressed tables, under an antique chandelier, is a large round table decorated with a floral centerpiece; at some point while topping off your cup of seasonal tea, staff will fill the table with trays of unlimited finger foods and desserts. The menu changes monthly, and if the current offerings don’t tickle your fancy, their website posts future menus for up to three months so you can plan ahead. Past summer offerings included watermelon gazpacho, shrimp salad, peach scone with whipped cream, tea sandwiches and a mix of cookies and mini cupcakes.

Hot Spot:

Greentree Antiques and Tearoom

The antiques showroom offers 18th and 19th century furnishings and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10am-4 pm, or by appointment. As for the tea room, luncheon is served at noon, Wednesday through Saturday. Afternoon tea is served at 3pm on Saturday or by appointment. Don’t forget to make reservations! Greentree Antiques and Tearoom is a great spot for showers, mother-daughter days, or if you want a relaxing daytime alternative to Ladies’ Night. The quaint establishment is a place “where tradition meets style.”

Gotta Try It: Gastro Gnomes 32

By Lauren Allen | Photography by Michael McCrystal

Rolling up in their colorful, gnome covered van, Gastro Gnomes Food Truck and Mobile Catering can be spotted from miles away. The delicious aromas coming from inside the truck are the only things that can bring more people in than the truck itself. It was not possible to resist a sweet and salty order of a Country Pork Burger with Maple Break Pudding for dessert. Everything on their menu, posted on Facebook every day, seems to always be packed with new and unique flavors that make even simple things like pork chops stand out in a crowd. With a new menu every day, Gastro Gnomes has something for everyone from the most ornate options to the simple home-style favorites. If it’s classics that call to you, try their Farm House Grilled Cheese with four different cheeses and a new twist of asparagus. For those of you that are excited to try something new, go for something like their Old Bay and Crab Fries. How do they choose the menu? “It really depends on the weather, the food and where we’re at,” said Andrew Suthers, co-owner of Gastro Gnomes. The best part is that their favorite parking spots are always outside local bars. All you have to do is walk up to the food truck, order your Grilled Cider marinated Pork Chop and wait inside the bar with a locally brewed beer until your dinner is delivered to you.

At first, this food truck seems similar to the ones lining the streets of New York Fashion Week; but unlike the generic order and eat on the sidewalk places, Gastro Gnomes puts their own unique twist on the food truck trend. Every day is a new selection of gourmet foods likely to make you want to toss your dinner plans and track down the graffiti lined truck. As Suthers said, “Our long term goal is to expand the food truck scene.” New York City is not the only place that can have fun outdoor culinary experiences! Hopefully soon Gastro Gnomes will be the leader of a swarm of successful food trucks around town, all serving a different audience. One of Suthers’ goals is to be a leader in the Lexington food truck community. He wants to be able to be the go-to person to help people with the paperwork and popularity necessary to be successful in the Food Truck business. Imagine a parking lot lined with unique trucks serving any kind of food that your heart desires. That is the world that Gastro Gnomes is trying to create. Maybe they will even start attending all of the wonderful fashion events that Lexington has to offer; we can only hope!
