Dear Mount Saint Mary College Supporters, Alumni, and Friends

It is my privilege as the “old nun” to provide you with this 2021-2022 Donor Impact Report.

For those of you who do not know me, I joined the Mount’s English faculty in 1969 and also served as Director of Residents until 1976. That spring, following the announcement of President O’Hara’s departure in June, I was asked by the Board of Trustees to serve as acting president while a presidential search went on. In the following year, I was named president of our beloved Mount Saint Mary College. I served in that capacity for the next 30 years, retiring in 2008. During those years, I came to appreciate more and more how important philanthropic support is to the continued excellence of the college.

When I became the president of the Mount, the college was operating out of a single academic building – Aquinas Hall – which was designed to serve about 700 students. In a little more than a decade, we had outgrown our facilities and needed to offer students greater recreational opportunities. In response, we purchased the Jewish Community Center and created Hudson Hall, a space for students to meet and build community. Thanks to our dear friend, Bill Kaplan and his late wife, Elaine, we built the Elaine and William Kaplan Recreation Center. The Kaplan Family went on to support the development of the surrounding athletic fields, truly allowing our Athletics program to soar to new heights.

In 2003, we launched a major fundraising campaign for the

Mathematics, Science, and Technology Center addition to Aquinas Hall. We were blessed once again to have leadership support from the Kaplan Foundation, but an undertaking of this magnitude needed the support of hundreds and thousands of additional donors and alumni. I was, and continue to be, grateful for so many of you who played an integral role in the success of the college and our students at a time when the college needed to grow and expand.

During my three decades as president, we accomplished a great deal, thanks to the generosity of many donors and friends of the college, just like you. Now more than ever, I have high hopes for the future of our beloved Mount. I pray for the health and growth of our endowment so that we can provide more scholarships for our students. I want the college to continue investing in new academic programs that are meaningful to society and attractive to new students.

And I pray for new facilities to educate our students’ minds, bodies, and souls. Anything is possible through God’s love and with everyone working together for the greater good of our community, college, and students.

Advancement Committee

A standing committee of the college’s Board of Trustees, members promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the college community, the Hudson Valley, and beyond; serve as advocates of the college; ensure new individuals with interest and capacity are engaged with the college in meaningful ways; and make financial donations to the college.

As an alum, I am very proud of my 45-year connection to the Mount. Having graduated in 1982 with a BS in Business Management and Administration, I was well prepared for my career.  As a local business owner, we proudly serve our clients in the Mount’s Judeo Christian tradition, with integrity and honesty. The continued success of Mount Saint Mary College, in its mission and the values instilled in its students, is very important to me. I proudly served as a member of the Board of Trustees, and am happy to be of continued service to the College as a member of the Advancement Committee.

My wife, Elizabeth, and daughters, Caterina, Mira, and Elle fell in love with Orange County and are proud homeowners in the City of Newburgh. I am passionate about youth development and am a committed community volunteer. Mount Saint Mary College is a critical anchor institution here in the City of Newburgh. As a resident and active stakeholder, I want to help the Mount and our students flourish and continue to be vibrant contributors to our community. I am proud to be a member of the Mount community and happy to have an opportunity to serve the college and continue its mission.

Of the numerous assignments I have had in my 40 years of priestly service, Mount Saint Mary College has been the most enjoyable because of the staff, faculty, and especially the students, who are the best. I was born in the Province of Quebec in Canada and ordained to the priesthood in 1982. I completed a M. Div and an MA in Theology at Saint John’s Seminary, and completed a third MA and a Ph.D. in History at Clark University. I have been with the Mount since 2017, and before that, was in parish work for at least 25 years before being assigned to higher education.

Prior to my son applying to the Mount, I must admit that I knew very little about the college. He had several opportunities to play baseball and attend other schools, but after visiting for the weekend in the fall of 2013, he was convinced the Mount was the place he wanted to spend the next four years. Having witnessed his growth as an individual, a student, and an athlete, it became apparent that the Mount was a special place, which has led me to be a donor and now a member of the Advancement Committee to help further the College’s mission.

I graduated from Mount Saint Mary College in 2019 with a BS in Business Management and concentration in Finance.

During my time at the Mount, I played on the Baseball Team for four years and serviced the Hudson Valley at an internship with Wallkill Valley Federal Savings & Loan before joining UBS Financial Services (NYC) in 2019. Currently, I am the editor & writer for the Huvane Wealth Management Conversations & Next Gen Investor segment, and a coordinator for the Huvane’s 198th scholarship fund, providing financial aid and mentorship to first generation high school students in the Bronx.

I chose to attend the Mount without ever stepping on the grounds. It just felt right and this choice has truly been a blessing in my life. So much so, that when I was choosing where to attend for my Master's, I returned there. Mount Saint Mary College gave me a strong sense of service, mission, commitment, and the desire to give back in any way possible. As a double alumna, a Dominican Sister, and now a member of the Board of Trustees, I continue to be blessed. I am delighted to continue my family's support for Mount Saint Mary College. Growing up in Newburgh, I have been aware of the college and its importance, however it was only after my  father’s participation on the Board of Trustees that I understood how much our community is enhanced by having a world class educational institute right in our downtown.  The college’s support of culturally important organizations such as the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra further confirm Newburgh's good fortune to have Mount Saint Mary College in residence.

For 30 years I have provided service to those affected by mental illness and addiction and the individuals and systems that treat those individuals. After graduating from Mount Saint Mary College in 1988, I went on to Adelphi University where I obtained my Masters of Social Work. My wife, Elaine, Vice President of Students for Mount, is also an alum, as are our children, Ryan and Kayla. Currently, I serve as the CRO of Mental Health America of Dutchess County, and strongly believe that we need to embrace change. My leadership has led to successful transitions of service, and I have been recognized locally and statewide for my compassion and leadership. In addition, I have appeared on television and radio, speaking about mental health topics in an effort to eradicate stigma.

My wife, Kathleen, and children, Benjamin, Luke, and Molly, currently live in the Town of Poughkeepsie, and as a lifelong Hudson Valley resident, I am dedicated to the well-being of the community. I am a proud Mount Saint Mary College alumnus, earning my Bachelor of Science degree in 2004 and completing my Master of Business Administration in 2012. With over 15 years of experience in the marketing and business development field, I am currently the director of business development for PKF O’Connor Davis, and have taken on several leadership positions for businesses throughout the Hudson Valley.

From birth to the age of five, I lived in my grandmother’s house, directly across the street from the Mount campus. After earning my Bachelor’s degree, I continued my education in Business at MSMC, where I felt right at home. My commitment is to community service, a passion I credit to the Mount, particularly through the example of the Dominican Sisters. Working closely with local civic, business, and notfor-profit leaders, my team at Get Right Results and I identify issues of priority for Newburgh. In addition, I served as a keynote speaker for the college’s first Start-Up Weekend, and received the Mount Saint Mary College Distinguished Alumni Award in 2022.

The years I spent at Mount Saint Mary College were among the best in my life. From the moment I arrived, I knew it was (and remains) a special place.  Friends, faculty, and administration had a major influence in shaping the man I am today.  My days there were fun, challenging, and eye opening and gave me perspective that I didn’t have before. Above all else, I met Mary Hill (class of 1990) there...we’ve been married for 25 years. It is for those reasons and more that I try to stay as involved with MSMC as possible 30 years after my graduation. I was born and raised in the Hudson Valley and completed my four-year degree from Mount Saint Mary College majoring in Communications with a minor in Theater and English. I started my career at the former Saint Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, N.Y, planning and executing major hospital fundraisers and ceremonies and building relationships throughout the community, before becoming the Executive Director of The Chamber Foundation, Inc. of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2012. I currently serve as the President of the Mount Saint Mary Alumni Association, a board member of The New Deal Creative Arts Center in Hyde Park, and the Northern Regional Gift Officer for the Westchester Center Health Network.

Born and raised in Newburgh, my connection to the Mount began years ago. I graduated from Mount Saint Mary Academy and years later returned to earn an MBA from MSMC.  Both of my daughters graduated from Bishop Dunn Memorial School. The Future of Giving:

Estate Planning, Endowed gifts, and IRAS

When you think of supporting Mount Saint Mary College, what comes to mind? Donating to fundraisers like Go Blue and Knight Nation?

Participating in capital campaigns? A one-time gift for a current project?

All of those are excellent ways to help the college continue to provide a great education to deserving students. But there are other options as well, some of which you might never have considered.

You can make a bigger impact than you ever imagined, all while receiving benefits in return.

ESTATE PLANNING: WHY A WILL IS THE WAY

An estate plan – the guidebook for your assets after your lifetime – can ensure that you’re able to care for and protect

your loved ones in meaningful ways, as well as giving them valuable peace of mind in knowing that they are carrying out your wishes as you intended.

Here are some of the things an estate plan can do:

• Save time and money: Without an estate plan, the legal process of the distribution of your assets can be lengthy and costly.

• Deepen trust and respect: By designating a specific person to handle your end-of-life care or to be your children’s legal guardians, loved ones see how much you admire and trust them. It’s a tangible way to show them just how much they mean to you.

• Share your passion: Including a gift to Mount Saint Mary College allows you to express your values and support the college in ways that align with your passion, even after your lifetime.

• Prevent dispute: Having a plan in place for assets and responsibilities after the passing of a loved one reduces conflict and confusion, while alleviating stress during an already difficult time.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM ESTATE PLANNING?

Estate planning is for everyone, regardless of marital status, income, or age. Through proper estate planning, you can address the following questions:

• Who will make health care and financial decisions on your behalf if you are not able?

• Who will care for you in the event of illness or disability?

• How would you like your pets to be cared for?

• How would you like your assets to be distributed?

THE IMPACT OF A SCHOLARSHIP

From experienced professors to state-of-the-art technologies in the classroom, providing the best experience for our students requires a growing budget. Also growing is our students’ need for financial aid. Grants, loans, and part-time jobs are common ways to offset the costs of getting a college degree, but an even better option is a scholarship.

Scholarships help give students access to an affordable MSMC education. Since they reduce the debt a student carries after college, scholarships also serve as an investment in their future. By helping cover the cost of tuition, books, and general living expenses, students can focus on what really matters: their education. When you establish a scholarship to Mount Saint Mary College through a gift in your estate plan, you also help secure access for future students as well.

WAYS TO FUND A NAMED SCHOLARSHIP

A named scholarship is an incredible way to honor a loved one; recognize a beloved faculty member; or memorialize the life of someone who has passed. There are two ways to establish a new named scholarship: through an annual gift of at least $5,000, or donors can endow a scholarship in perpetuity with a minimum gift of $25,000. Either gift can be made using cash (or its equivalent) or through a planned gift. An annual scholarship gift is awarded within the year the gift is received and directly provides students with immediate financial assistance during that school year. You can fund this type of gift in many ways, such as donating cash or appreciated stock, or designating a gift in your will or living trust, for instance.

An endowed gift keeps giving in perpetuity. The Mount takes your one-time, lump-sum gift and invests it, using a portion each year to assist students. (See sidebar, at right.)

Endowments

The gifts that keep on Giving A

n endowed scholarship supports our students in perpetuity. The college awards 5 percent of the principle, while re-investing any additional interest back to help the principle grow in value. Here’s an example: If a donor establishes a new named endowed scholarship with a minimum gift of $25,000, the college will award $1,250 in the first year. However, the college’s endowment usually earns more than 5 percent interest. Let’s say the endowment earns 8 percent interest. That extra 3 percent is added back to the principle. Now consider where things will stand in 10 years! Compound interest quickly grows the principle, allowing the college to award more money in the form of student scholarships.

Harnessing the power of your IRA

Your IRA is a tool that helps you save for your retirement years. And when retirement comes, your IRA also provides a smart way to support the initiatives you care about most. When you give through your IRA, you not only make an impact on the Mount, you protect your hard-earned savings from taxes and in return, qualify for benefits.

HOW IT WORKS

If you are 70 ½ or older, you can transfer any amount up to $100,000 per year directly from your IRA to a qualified charitable institution such as Mount Saint Mary College.

THE BENEFITS

Along with making an immediate impact at the Mount, your IRA charitable rollover gift (also referred to as a qualified charitable distribution or QCD) benefits you as well.

• If you are at least 72 years old and you have not yet met your required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.

• You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer does not generate taxable income or a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your tax deductions.

Note: It is important that your gift passes directly from your IRA to Mount Saint Mary College. If you withdraw the amount first, your gift will count as income. Please consult a qualified expert for additional details and to discuss your unique financial situation.

ON MEDICARE?

Making a gift through your IRA can help minimize your Medicare surcharges. Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level, which is used to calculate any Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amounts (IRMAA) that apply to you.

Making a difference at the Mount

Your estate plan can be a powerful way to show your love for Mount Saint Mary College and future students. Some of the ways you can use estate planning to support the college include:

• Naming the college as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy, a retirement account, or almost any other account where a beneficiary can be designated.

• Earmarking a certain percentage of assets in your will or estate plan.

• Leaving the college a specific dollar amount in your will or estate plan.

• Leaving a specific appreciated asset, such as real estate or stocks, to the college as part of your estate plan.

• Establishing a charitable gift annuity through the National Catholic Community Foundation, in which the donors receive income for life, with the remainder of the annuity coming to the college, once the donor or donors pass away.

No matter how you choose to remember the college in your estate plan, please know that we are grateful for your gift - and so too are future generations of Mount alumni. We are here to work with you on the specifics of your donation, and allowing the college to know exactly what you wish to do with your generous legacy gift is an important step in the process.

Giving Hope Mount donors pay it forward to future scholars

For countless Mount Saint Mary College students, scholarships can mean the difference between achieving their academic dreams and putting their education plans on hold.

Mount scholarships provide an affordable, values-based education to thousands of deserving students, many of whom are among the first in their families to attend college. The numbers may surprise you: about nine out of ten Mount students receive financial aid, with scholarships playing a huge role for many. There are plenty of ways to help the Mount fund scholarships, including some you might not have known were possible! The following are the stories of our dedicated alumni who have contributed to the future of education through legacy gifts.

Susan Ryan ’76, PhD

Born in Japan and raised in Germany during the era of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Susan Ryan, PhD found her way to Mount Saint Mary College in 1972, where she would study English and Special Education. Having more international experience by the time she

graduated college than most people get in a lifetime, she soon set off on a fantastic life of service that would take her around the world. And now, she is aiding the next generation of Mount teachers with a scholarship in her parents’ names.

As an elementary school aged student living in Nürnberg, Germany, Ryan’s parents and teachers taught her about the evils that the Nazis inflicted upon the world a few decades earlier.

“These early experiences instilled in me a deep respect for freedom, social justice, moral leadership, and the sense of obligation to contribute positively to society

and the world,” Ryan explained.

Under the guidance of the Dominican Sisters, Ryan’s desire to make the world a better place was amplified during her four years at Mount Saint Mary College. The result has been a life lived in service: Ryan travels extensively, volunteering and working with disenfranchised people in Bolivia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, and on the U.S. border.

It comes as no surprise that Ryan decided to aid the Mount students of tomorrow by creating the LTC Martin Vincent & Geraldine Mary Ryan Special Education Scholarship for students in social services, special

education, or related fields.

“I hope the gift is awarded to someone who demonstrates the ability to make a difference in the lives of people who are disenfranchised, such as people with disabilities,” she said.

Established in honor of her parents, Ryan created the gift by naming the college as a beneficiary on a retirement account.

Her father was a child of Irish immigrants, a scholar, a soldier, and a man of high moral character, explained Ryan. She added that her father “instilled in me the values of integrity, kindness and life-long learning. As an army officer, he also stressed the importance of choosing a profession that aimed to make a difference, give back, and contribute to the world.”

Ryan describes her mother as “the bravest woman I knew: she married a widower with three little girls in 1963.” Her mother also helped to send Ryan on her path to becoming a special education teacher when she suggested that Ryan would enjoy teaching children with disabilities.

Coupled with her dedication to service, Ryan’s fondness for the Mount made the decision to create the scholarship easy.

“My experiences at Mount Saint Mary College were meaningful and, in many ways, shaped my life,” she said.

During her sophomore year, Joan Miller, professor of Education, asked her class to read Christmas in Purgatory by Burton Blatt. The book depicts the hardships experienced by people living in mental health hospitals in the U.S. in the 1960s. Ryan vividly remembers poring through the book while sitting on the floor of the Mount’s library.

“I was so moved…that I knew immediately that I would focus my studies and career on teaching children with the most profound disabilities,” said Ryan.

In late 1972 and early 1973, Miller would provide eight Mount students with the opportunity to spend their own “Christmas in purgatory” at the now-defunct New York State Institution at Wassaic.

“There we witnessed the atrocities that characterized such institutions at that time. These experiences and Dr. Miller’s mentorship profoundly influenced my career trajectory,” Ryan said. “I hope this scholarship will allow other Mount Saint Mary College students to have a similarly meaningful experience.”

After graduating from the Mount, Ryan earned a PhD in special education, lived in Alaska for 25 years, and was a full professor at the University of Vermont and the University of Alaska Anchorage (where she retired as a Professor Emerita).

“I have enjoyed an incredible life and career,” she noted. And thanks to her generosity, future Mount students will have the opportunity to make their dreams come true as well.

Elizabeth ScannellDesch ’72, PhD, RN, OCNS, FAAN

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Elizabeth Scannell-Desch ’72, PhD, RN, OCNS, FAAN was at the start of her career, working towards a bachelor’s degree in Nursing at the Mount. She and her twin sister, Mary Ellen Doherty ’72, PhD, RN, CNM, were some of the earliest graduates of the college and some of the first to benefit from the rigorous Nursing program founded by the Dominican Sisters.

Thanks to several scholarships she earned, Scannell-Desch was able to make her educational dreams come true at the Mount. Now she will be passing that opportunity on to the next generation of Mount nurses by contributing to several undergraduate and graduate scholarships. Her generous gifts have been made possible through a planned gift from her estate.

“I hope to ease the financial burden

of college for deserving Nursing undergraduate and graduate students, who are performing well academically, but are financially challenged as I was,” she explained. “These students need to demonstrate significant motivation toward academic excellence, a drive to provide the highest quality nursing care, a love of learning, and strong compassion in caring for vulnerable patients and their families.”

This isn’t the first time Scannell-Desch has paid it forward to future Mount students: she also funded a scholarship for graduate students in Nursing in the name of her late husband, Lieutenant Colonel Joseph M. Desch, USAF. In addition, both she and her sister endowed additional scholarships in honor of their beloved mother.

LIFE AFTER THE MOUNT

Scannell-Desch has done much since graduating from the Mount, such as becoming a registered nurse, serving in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps for 25 years all over the globe, attaining the rank of Colonel, and leading a rich career in academics that included teaching at Rutgers University and Adelphi University, becomming the Associate Dean of the College of Nursing at Rutgers University, and serving as chairperson of the Mount’s

Division of Nursing. She earned a master’s degree in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Family and Community Nursing Research from Georgia State University. Recently, she started an educational consulting practice, working with colleges and universities to help junior nursing faculty to grow their research programs.

And through it all – as a student, an alumna, and an employee of the college – she has always held a deep love and appreciation for the Mount.

“I found working at the college [as the chairperson for the Mount’s Nursing programs and a professor] to be a wonderful experience, because it was a very welcoming community of staff and scholars,” she noted. “The Mount fostered a sense of warmth, collaboration, cohesion, and working toward mutual goals.”

She also cherishes the college for the great impact it made on her and her career: “The Mount is a treasure that means a great deal to me and has a special place in my heart,” said Scannell-Desch. “It was the launching pad for my success as a leader and scholar.”

The Mount, she said, fostered her drive to succeed academically and professionally. Some of the most influential of Scannell-

Desch’s professors were Sr. Leona DeBoer OP, professor emerita of Nursing, and James Finn Cotter, professor emeritus of English.

“Sr. Leona was an excellent professor, clinician, and role model,” Scannell-Desch explained. “She challenged her students in the classroom and at the bedside to think critically, to always be prepared, and strive for excellence.

She added, “Dr. Cotter was the epitome of a professor: a no-nonsense scholar who demanded excellence in writing and speaking. He taught me to ‘write with purpose.’”

Scannell-Desch has co-authored two books with her twin sister, Nurses in War: Voices from Iraq and Afghanistan (2012) and Nurses After War: The Reintegration Experience of Nurses Returning from Iraq and Afghanistan (2016).

and Ronald French

In a Christmas greeting to the Mount’s leadership in 2015, alumna Elaine Squeri ’64 and her husband, Ronald French, reiterated their love for the college: “The Mount will remain a priority for us and also a great pleasure, as we continue to follow its role in Newburgh and in the lives of the people it reaches now and has touched through decades passed,” they wrote.

It’s a statement that rings true today more than ever. Through their gift to the college, the Dominican Legacy Endowed Scholarship Fund, Squeri and French have helped to pass the Mount experience on to future teachers for nearly a decade.

“We just want to get these students into college in a place they’d love to be,” Squeri

explained.

Their scholarship gift, earmarked for high-achieving Mount students in the Education field, was made possible by a charitable gift annuity through the National Catholic Charity Foundation. After starting the fund in 2014, Squeri and French have followed up with several additional gifts over the years to strengthen the fund.

The scholarship can be awarded to incoming freshmen, or current Mount sophomores or juniors who demonstrate a commitment to serving others, are planning to become teachers, and have financial need. The first award of the scholarship was made in the 2015-16 academic year and the scholarship continues to this day.

At their request, the scholarship fund honors the college’s founders, the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh.

“My personal experience with the Dominican Sisters, from school days through

college days at the Mount, had a profound effect on my life,” Squeri explained. “Their commitment to education and service inspired me in so many ways.”

In the early 1960s, Squeri enjoyed electives in Latin and French at Mount Saint Mary College. Later, she would build on her Mount education by obtaining a master’s degree in French from Middlebury College.

Squeri and her husband, a pair of New Jersey natives, married in the 1970s and moved to Arlington, Va., where they have lived ever since. But despite the time passed and the distance from her alma mater, Squeri’s college experience is something that she has continued to cherish.

“The location and campus are priceless for the Mount, just priceless,” she said. “And I hope it always stays as beautiful as it is.”

One example of that, she said, is the Chapel of the Most Holy Rosary. Squeri still finds it to be just as breathtaking as an

alumna, noting simply, “Oh my gosh, what a beautiful chapel!”

FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS

There was another, lesser-known spot on campus that has also remained in her heart.

“There’s a place by the Villa – just below it – that had sort of a rock seat sort of setup,” she explained. “I would go there whenever I got my mail and open it.” With the Hudson River in the background, “It was a treat!”

As it has been in the past, Squeri wants the Mount’s future to be as immersed in service and community as possible.

“I’m hoping the ties between the Mount, Newburgh itself, and its people will be tight,” she said. “The Dominican Sisters have been working towards that for decades [and] the college helps with that – they really do.”

French applauded the college’s academic strides, and wants to see the college expand its offerings even more: “We would really like to see the Mount grow the way it has been. We liked when we saw the Nursing program evolve.”

Squeri and French won’t have to wait long to see this next evolution of the college. Thanks to the college’s longstanding commitment to education and the community, there are always plans in the works for improving the Mount’s academic offerings and service initiatives.

And thanks to friends of the college like Squeri and French, there are many future generations of Mount students who will be able to make their academic dreams come true with scholarships like the Dominican Legacy Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Reunion Weekend September 5-7 2021

Hundreds of successful grads, spanning decades of Mount Saint Mary College history, journeyed back to their alma mater for the college's annual Alumni Weekend.

Alumni and their families celebrated their accomplishments, caught up with old friends and professors, and saw what's new at the college that launched their careers. They enjoyed a barbecue with their classmates and professors; class dinners and other reunions; and more.

During the festivities, Dr. James Finn Cotter, the longest-serving professor the Mount has ever known, was honored by the Alumni Association for 57 years of dedicated and outstanding service to the college.

Sadly, Dr. Cotter passed away in early 2022 at the age of 92. His legacy is truly part of the DNA of the college, from his administrative service to the thousands of students on which he imparted a love of literature.

Christina Bart Bilsky, a 1985 Nursing graduate of the Mount, was presented with the James V. McEnery Alumni Service Award for her continued service to her alma mater. Bilsky gives back to her alma mater by being a member of the Mount's School of Nursing Alumni Advisory Council and hosted a networking event for recent Mount Nursing alumni. As a registered nurse at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City – a job she began right out of college – Blisky spent 35 years bringing compassion and kindness to her patients.

Spanish-speaking journalist Enny D. Pichardo '06 was honored with the college's Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing his contributions to society through professional and volunteer work. He is currently the host of #EnNYConMas, a self-produced YouTube show that provides daily news briefs regarding issues affecting the Latino community in New York City.

Go Blue for MSMC October 1-30, 2021

The Mount’s annual Go Blue fundraiser earned more than $61,000 for a variety of departments and scholarships at the college. This unique fundraiser allows participants to support what they love about the Mount. From Athletics to Campus Ministry and everything in between, many areas of the college benefited from the generosity of its friends, alumni, faculty, and staff.

Karen Eberle-McCarthy, professor emerita of Hispanic Studies, donated a whopping $20,000 to establish a new scholarship. It will support current junior and senior students with financial need from the City of Newburgh.

Mount Saint Mary College

“Having spent 37 years teaching Spanish at the Mount and taken hundreds of students on immersive study abroad experiences, I have witnessed the incredible impact a college degree can have on young minds and their future success,” said McCarthy. “College graduates from the City of Newburgh are role models for their families and community, which is why I decided to establish a new scholarship. I see this scholarship as an additional bridge between Newburgh and the Mount. The college can’t do this alone – we need more donors and more scholarships.”

After the goal of $50,000 was surpassed, Mount President Jason Adsit’s wife, Heather, went skydiving on May 22, 2022.

Athletics Hall of Fame October 2, 2021

Five outstanding athletes were inducted into the Mount’s 2021 Athletic Hall of Fame. Vinnie Carminati ’14 MBA ’15 hit .377 over 451 at-bats during his career as a Knight, and totaled 170 hits. After graduating, he began working at Essensys, a software company.

Chelsea Dexter ’16 led the softball program to the top of the Skyline Conference and drove in the game-winning run in the Mount’s first NCAA Tournament victory. She was named All-Skyline Conference twice.

Donte Howell ’14 matched the basketball program record for wins in a season with 23 and claimed the ECAC Championship title. He scored a total of 1,235 points in his career.

Sean Lockwood ’14 MBA ’15 turned the Men’s Soccer program into a Skyline Conference contender and led the team to its first Skyline Conference title.

Kaileen Spadaro ’13 was on the Mount’s first Women’s Lacrosse team. She helped lead the Knights to the Skyline Conference Tournament in their first season and she finished the year ranked 50th nationally in goals per game.

12th annual Gala December 10, 2021

The Gala raised more than $153,000 in gifts, sponsorships, and ticket sales, which were used to support the Annual Gala Endowed Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is awarded to academically strong students with financial need, with preference given to students pursuing a degree in Business. Mount scholarships provide an affordable, values-based education to thousands of deserving students, many of whom are among the first in their families to attend college.

Michael J. Quinn, president and CEO of Rhinebeck Bank, and Nick Citera and Nicolas DiBrizzi of Cosimo's Restaurant Group, were honored with the Joseph A. Bonura Award for Leadership Excellence. This award recognizes individuals or organizations whose professional accomplishments, service to the community, and leadership reflect the same commitment to quality, concern for neighbors, and shared prosperity that have exemplified the career and character of local restaurateur Joseph A. Scholarship Donor Brunch October 17, 2021

Student scholarship was the main course at the Mount Saint Mary College Scholarship Appreciation Brunch, which allowed the college community to thank the many generous donors who provide endowed scholarships for Mount students. Nearly 80 scholarships were awarded for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Knight Nation March 22-24, 2022

Instead of playing against a rival school, the Knights teams went head-to-head with each other in the Knight Nation Challenge, an annual fundraiser for the Athletics department.

Nearly a dozen of the Mount's teams competed to see how many donors they could get to help them raise money over a two-day period in March.

In those 48 hours, about 130 friends of the college donated nearly $10,000 for the Knights. Women’s Lacrosse took the crown for most funds raised at $2,060, with Men’s Basketball taking second with $1,900. Women’s Soccer came in third with $1,175.

Emeriti Appreciation Luncheon April 7, 2022

The James F. Cotter Villa Library was packed with familiar faces at the recent Emeriti Facility Luncheon. The professors caught up with old friends, enjoyed a nice lunch, and learned about the latest programs and projects on campus from Mount President Jason Adsit.

Hope Stories

April 7 and 8, 2022

Mount Saint Mary College’s theatre group presented Hope Stories, an original play based on a long-running interview project documenting the history of the Dominican Sisters of Hope.

James Phillips, associate professor of Theatre, and Rebecca Ferretti ’16 sought to honor the legacy of the sisters by interviewing members of the Dominican order. The Mount owes much to the vision and hard work of the Dominican Sisters, who founded the college in 1959.

The interviews illuminated each sister’s history, with questions related to why she joined the order, what she accomplished during her assignments, and how she benefitted from a life as a Dominican.

More than a dozen Dominican Sisters attended the final performance of Hope Stories and enjoyed a reception in their honor afterwards.

Annual Golf and Tennis Invitational Tournament June 6, 2022

Held at the Powelton Club in Newburgh, the event honored the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 363 and the organization’s business manager, Sam Fratto. Fratto was born and raised in Newburgh, and in 2011, he became Business Manager of IBEW Local 363. He has since been elected by the membership four times.

The IBEW Local 363 established an annual scholarship at the Mount for students who are also members of IBEW Local 363 or a dependent of a member.

Thanks to the support of many donors and sponsors, over $108,000 was raised to support the Golf & Tennis Tournament Endowed Scholarship.

Steve Sosler recently became the Director of Major Gifts at Mount Saint Mary College. A 1999 Mount graduate, Sosler enjoyed a long and fruitful career in the college’s Athletics Department before taking on his current role. Sosler’s wife, Nicole, is a Mathematics Coach in Valley Central School District. Their son, Carmelo, is nine years old and the family lives in New Windsor, N.Y.

What prompted your switch from Athletics to Advancement?

I truly enjoyed working in Athletics for the better part of the last 18 years, but I also wanted to challenge myself with a new career direction while staying at the college I love. The timing both personally and professionally was right. This move gives me the opportunity to make a first hand, positive impact on the college’s future.

What do you hope to accomplish as the Director of Major Gifts?

I hope to continue to build relationships to implement the plans we have moving forward. I love the direction the school is going and am excited for our future. The leadership has some exciting plans for an already great place.

I’m extremely thankful to my staff in Athletics and I look forward to working with them in a different capacity. Dear Members of the Mount Saint Mary College Community:

It can’t be overstated: Mount Saint Mary College would not be able to educate a large percentage of our students without the scholarships funded by alumni and friends of the college. To everyone who has helped our students to thrive through their generous donations, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Seeing the success of these deserving, often underprivileged students is one of the greatest joys of being the college president.

The stories in this Donor Impact Report reflect that exceptional generosity and the college’s deep commitment to service. These two elements, handin-hand, have dramatically improved the Mount’s academic programs, student-learning initiatives, and overall campus culture. The legacy of the Dominican Sisters is still alive and well at the college. Like our founding sisters, it is clear that our supporters have made the four Dominican pillars of study, spirituality, community, and service a staple of their everyday lives.

I can’t thank you enough for everything you do to help make the Mount such an incredible place.

As we expand our commitment to service and grow academically, I look forward to seeing how each new story builds upon the Dominican and Catholic legacy of serving others.
