Dear Friends of Mount,

P

lease accept the greetings of the Academy and be assured of our constant prayers on your behalf and in gratitude for your support and partnership. It is good to meet you once again in these pages and share with you news of our school. Outside my office window, which looks out onto our front campus, there stands a tall, stately, old tree. This tree has stood on our campus for as long as anyone can remember and no doubt many of our alumni have sat in its shade or had graduation photos taken near it. I’m sure many of you can remember and can picture the tree of which I write. Often I find myself gazing out the window and enjoying the beauty of this tree – the splendor, majesty, and glory of God’s creation in all seasons. I wonder who planted it. I revel in all the history it has seen. And I am awed by all it has withstood – rain and wind and ice and snow, season after season. Yet, there it stands, still. That tree has become, for me, a symbol of this academy and all those who have partnered with us. Just as the Brothers began

the mission which is Mount Saint Charles Academy, someone (probably a Brother) planted that tree. As the Brothers and those who came before us nurtured the mission, someone through the years has pruned, tended, and cared for that tree. And through these many years Mount has endured many challenges just as wind and foul weather battered the tree. Yet, both the tree and our beloved school still stand. The tree depends upon nutrients from the soil, rain from the clouds, and light from the sun to sustain itself. Without these things the tree would have withered and died many years ago. Like that tree, Mount, too, depends upon outside sources for its sustenance. It is partners and benefactors like you who provide the light and nutrients upon which our mission is able to grow. Because of you Mount has been able to survive the storms, has been able to grow and strengthen its mission, and has been able to spread it branches as a sheltering embrace for all who seek what Mount offers. In these pages we celebrate many things which make Mount great – especially we celebrate

the many accomplishments of our students and our alumni, each of whom have accepted the challenge of our mission statement and seek to serve others with their unique gifts and talents. Through them, Mount spreads both its roots and its branches and grows stronger and prouder than ever. But without you, Mount would not have the light and nutrients it needs to persevere. Without support from you, our partners, Mount’s mission would soon wither. So as you peruse these pages, please understand how important you are to the success of our school and its mission. Once again, it’s time for us to reach out to you through our annual fund appeal. The support you provide is needed now more than ever. Please be as generous as you can so that our school can continue to grow and thrive and flourish, just as the tree that stands outside my window continues to grow taller and stronger with each passing year. I am ever grateful for you partnership and support and I wish you peace and blessings in the Christmas season and throughout the New Year. Excelsior! Herve Richer ’74 President

Dear Alumni and Friends of Mount, Greetings to you all from the Academy in Woonsocket’s Bernon Heights neighborhood. Happily I share that our school year is well underway and our second quarter is progressing rapidly. In this edition we focus on the contributions of Mounties who have served or who are serving in our nation’s armed forces. To these men and women we offer our gratitude and praise. Whether serving in war or peace, you have made sacrifices. Training, travel from home, and time spent away from family and friends are all part of the mission you have chosen. For some, the mission ended with the ultimate sacrifice, and for others, it ended with an honorable discharge from service. Still for others, the mission of service continues. To each of you, and to your families, we say thank you for serving. In some points of history, our nation was less than welcoming and supportive of our veterans. Today, there remains a national debate as to the care and support given to veterans. In a small way here at Mount, I want to share that our students recognize and value the men and women who serve. Just this fall three eighth grade girls came to me and asked if they could organize an effort to collect and send toiletries and other items to our troops. Without hesitation I gave them approval, humbled by their act of concern for others, and proud of their recognition of the sacrifice these soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and others make. 2 2

G.K Chesterton said, “Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of readiness to die.” Though I am not a veteran, I proudly say that my father and uncles were part of the “Greatest Generation” who served in the Second World War. Also, I have nephews who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and through them I have seen the challenges that this new generation of veterans faces. From all of them I gained a greater understanding of the meaning of courage and sacrifice. They had the strength and conviction to put their lives in service of the truths which our great nation professes. Regardless of politics, these men and women in the armed forces take orders from their commander in chief and vow to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies. These civilians were made into soldiers and sent into battle in defense of freedom. With a certainty to their mission and pride in their effort, they found a common purpose and direction. They did not see themselves as heroes or deserving of praise. Rather, they shared with me little of the daily experience, focused instead on those who did not return from the battlefields. To these men in my own family, and countless others, service to our country was something which they knew had to be done for the greater good. Working in union with people from around the nation, they were given tools to accomplish the mission and worked tirelessly in their own small ways

until it was realized. Through authors like Stephen Ambrose and James Bradley, we have been given a greater insight into the lives of these individuals. Sacrifice for the good of others was ingrained in their hearts and minds. Selfless care for their brothers in arms, and a love for their country pushed them onward. Citizen Soldiers, Band of Brothers, D-Day, Flags of Our Fathers, and Flyboys all share insight into the lives of the soldiers of World War Two and remind us in the 21st century what it meant to be called from civilian life into the armed forces. It was a national effort to rid the world of tyranny. May we always be grateful for the efforts of the men and women who answer the call to serve, and may we do all we can to honor their courage, commitment, and sacrifice. Loved be the Heart of Jesus.

We Celebrate Our Royal Mounties and Military Veterans Every year Mount Saint Charles Academy recognizes its Royal Mounties, alumni who graduated 50 years ago or more. This year was exceptionally special because in addition to this celebration, the Academy took the opportunity to also recognize its veterans, of all ages, who have served in the armed forces. Alumni who died while on active duty as well as those who have served our country and are currently serving were honored during a ceremony. This special event happened on Sunday, November 8th in what will now be known as Veterans’ Hall which is located on the main floor of the Academy adjacent to the junior/senior locker room. The day began with Mass and brunch in Chapel Hall - an annual tradition held in honor of the Royal Mounties. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Richard Desaulniers with members of the Academy’s choir and band performing hymns during the service. Everyone was also able to enjoy a tour of the school led by Gail Bryson, the Academy’s Alumni Director. Immediately following brunch was the Veterans’ Hall dedication ceremony. Junior Emily Mercier sang the National Anthem and Deacon Anthony Gagliani, Mount’s director of campus ministry, delivered the invocation. President Herve Richer ‘74 welcomed this distinguished group of alumni, unveiled the new

memorial plaques, and officially dedicated Veterans’ Hall. Donald Demers, Director of Institutional Advancement, and President Richer read the names of the Mount alumni who died on active duty while a bell reverently rang in their honor. Next, they read the names of the alumni who have served and are currently serving in the armed forces. Each memorial plaque is engraved with the names of alumni who died on active duty

the money needed to design and manufacture the plaques. Walter served in the United States Air Force from 1943-1945, retiring as a First Lieutenant. “It is long past time that our school honors those men and women who have graduated from here and gone on to serve in our country’s military,” President Richer said. “We should thank God each and every day for the sacrifices they -- and all veterans -- have made. It is my hope that our memorial will serve as a reminder for generations of Mounties of the sacrifices so many have made and continue to make. And perhaps the memorial will inspire others to follow in the footsteps of those whose names adorn the plaques.”

THE ENTIRE MOUNT COMMUNITY THANKS TWO BROTHERS FOR THEIR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY Brother Albert Gignac, SC (Br. Leander)

Brother Paul Parenteau, SC (Brother Eric)

Born in Embrun, Canada, Brother Albert Gignac, SC (Br. Leander) moved to Woonsocket in the early 1900s. He was one of 16 children with his brother Blaise also serving as a Brother of the Sacred Heart. Brother Albert served in World War I and saw action in France. While in France, he befriended a French family, whom he kept in contact with, and as a part of his Golden Jubilee trip, Brother Albert went back to France to visit them. At the age of 28, Br. Albert joined the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and rendered culinary service for the Brothers. From 1935-1937 and 1948 – 1952, Br. Albert served at Mount. At the age of 77 after 49 years of service as a Brother of the Sacred Heart, he passed away on February 26th, 1972.

Born in Biddeford, Maine, Brother Paul Parenteau, SC (Brother Eric), served in the Navy in World War II. During his three years of naval service, he was assigned on the U.S.S. Boston. He took part in the whole Pacific Campaign, receiving 13 Battle Stars and became one of the first Americans to step on Japanese homeland during occupation time. After being discharged from the Navy, he entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at the age of 21 on June 26, 1946. He pronounced his first vows in 1948 and his perpetual vows at Mount in 1954. In 1956, he began a lengthy assignment (over 28 years) in the African countries of Lesotho and Zambia as well as serving our schools in New England, including Mount from 1969 – 1970. Brother Paul passed away on August 29, 2013 after serving the Brothers of the Sacred Heart for 65 years.

Thank you to Br. Louis Laperle and Br. Robert Croteau for their help in preparing this information!

HONORING OUR MOUNTIES WHO HAVE SERVED AND ARE CURRENTLY SERVING Brittany Smith, Class of 2006 Captain in the Nurse Corps, US Air Force, Active Duty Officer Brittany is currently serving as an active duty officer in the Air Force. She is a Captain in the Nurse Corps and is stationed at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, CA. “I was doing a mission trip in Haiti, helping to build an orphanage, and I was offered a position to work as a nurse in their clinic training the Haitian nurses/midwives,” Brittany said as she reflected on her motivation for joining. “I was so close to saying yes, but I needed to knock down my student loans and could not afford to defer the loans to work in Haiti for a year. When I got home from Haiti, I felt like I needed to do more. I loved being an ER nurse at Cape Cod Hospital, but something was lacking for me. Three days after getting home from Haiti, I was sitting in an Air Force recruiter’s office. Three months later I was commissioned as an officer. Serving my country was ‘the more’ I was searching for.” Brittany deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) as a trauma nurse at Craig Joint Theater Hospital from November 2013 to May 2014. “My six month deployment was, hands down, the best part of my service as a nurse and officer in the military. I love emergency nursing and I was grateful that I could be a part of a team who helped bring our wounded soldiers home. It was a humbling experience and it solidified my reason for serving my country and becoming a nurse. I don’t

talk about my experience overseas that much, but I think of those men and women often and hope they are back with their families and loved ones happy to be alive. I’m honestly just grateful that I played a small role in getting those heroes home safely and alive.” The biggest value that Brittany has taken from her time serving is appreciation. “I have come to appreciate the value of heroes, true American heroes. The respect I have for the men and women who have served our country is insurmountable. That appreciation has helped me understand what I want in life and what I hope to accomplish.” As Britanny thought back to her time spent at Mount, she said it was like an extended family. “I loved the community and I loved the support. My family has supported every single goal I’ve set out to reach. During high school, Mount was right behind my family supporting my ambitions. That support has transcended throughout my life. If I could go back to my teenage self and do it, go to Mount all over again, I would and in a heartbeat. Mount gave me the confidence to just go and just do it. If you fail or don’t enjoy what you’re doing, then move on and tackle the next challenge.”

Michol G. Guilbault, Class of 1976 Electrician’s Mate Third Class, US Coast Guard Michol served in the United States Coast Guard from August 1976 to September 1980. He also had two years of inactive duty from 1980 to 1982. His rank at discharge was Electrician’s Mate, Third Class. “At the advice of my father, I joined the US Military/US Coast Guard to serve my country and help pay to further my education,” Michol said. “My motivation to join the Coast Guard was one of their mottos - ‘We save lives.’” Michol began with Boot Camp at Cape May, NJ and then went to his first assignment at Kure Island, a LORAN Station (Long Range Aid to Navigation). Kure was an island in the Hawaiian chain, measuring approximately ¼ mile by ¼ mile, and located 55 miles Northwest of Midway Island. He served as a seaman/fireman apprentice where he was responsible for maintaining the station and the generators. After spending three months there, Michol was transferred to another island in the South Pacific, Ebeye, an island in the Kwagilian Atoll, which was also a LORAN Station. After nine months, the Coast Guard closed the station at Ebeye and Michol was transferred to Rockland, ME which was a small boat station where he served for six months. From Maine, he went to Governors Island, NY for his technical training at Electrician’s Mate “A” School. His assignment after graduating from Electrician’s Mate school was aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Unimac, State Pier, New Bedford, MA. He served as an 8

Electrician’s Mate Third Class and his duties included maintaining the ships’ generators and electrical systems. New Bedford is where Michol finished his active duty. In his last detail before discharge, Michol was sent to Key West, FL where he assisted in the Cuban Flotilla for which he was awarded a Humanitarian Medal from then President Gerald Ford. “First and foremost what had the strongest impact on me while serving was the comradery I shared

in Guantanamo Bay, Jamaica, and Bermuda. In particular, cruising the North Atlantic in the winter brought shipmates together. While serving, the values I learned were self-confidence, belief in others as well as myself, and not to be repetitive, but comradery. The leaders in boot camp pushed a little harder than the Brothers at Mount, but I learned pride in myself, pride in my fellow man, and pride in my country. My tour was spent in a time of Peace. At Mount, I learned to be strong and to work on my own as well with others. It also taught me the value of a good education. Upon discharge from the service, I went on to receive an Associate’s Degree in Finance and Investment, a Bachelor’s Degree in Management, and an MBA in International Business.”

August 1976 with the other members of my units,” Michol shared. “On the islands, we quickly learned to keep our minds amused, using a pool table, shuffle board, and the nice stereo everyone had. We didn’t have TV, Cable, or Internet, but we did have a movie at night. At Governor’s Island, I had access to downtown Manhattan and was close enough to go home on weekends when I didn’t have duty. My time aboard the Unimac there was again the sense of comradery with stops

November 2015 Michol is presently employed with RICOH – USA as a Site Representative for the New England Institute of Technology.

Frank E. Foster, Class of 1948 Sergeant, US Marine Corps

Frank Foster ‘48 “After attending North Eastern University in Boston, MA, I felt it was my patriotic duty to serve my country, so I joined the United States Marine Corps in September of 1949. My experience at the Parris Island, SC Marine Corps training center was one I will never forget. I adapted to the regimentation quickly because of the training I received as a boarder for three years at the Mount. I was amazed that when the lights went out you could talk and walk around. Throughout my time at Mount Saint

Charles, when the lights went out at 9:00 p.m., you could hear a pin drop. At the Mount, we woke at the same time, ate, prayed, and had recreations and classes always at the same time very similar to the Marine Corps training. It was also my routine to write letters when I went overseas. This was nothing new since letter writing was required every Saturday evening in Mount’s study hall. Thanks MSC! Upon graduation from basic training, I was sent to camp Lejeune, NC

Frank is pictured with his family.

- home of the 2nd Marine Division combat engineer battalion. The day before I arrived, the entire battalion was sent to Korea. I did not realize at the time, but God had his hand on my life. I missed the Korean draft on three other occasions by two and seven days. God still had his hand on me. Many of my friends were involved in the North Korean, Chosin Reservoir campaign. Sadly, many did not come back home. Some of these friends were also members of the class of 1948. I retired after 38 years as a field quality manager for AT&T Technology Group. I have been married for over 60 years to a lovely Christian woman. We have three wonderful children and three grandchildren. I thank God for watching over me and I thank Mount Saint Charles for the lessons learned that have stayed with me and helped me through life’s journey. God Bless Our Servicemen and God Bless America! “

Mary (Csizmesia) Paine, Class of 1982 Petty Officer Second Class (E-5), Navy

Mary served in the U.S. Navy and was on active duty from 1986 - 1992 Cryptolologic Technician Administrative Specialist.. She was honorably discharged as a Petty Officer Second Class (E-5). “I had many reasons for my motivation to join,” Mary shared. “I wanted to travel; I wanted to further my education; I wanted to serve my country; but most of all I wanted to be part of something greater; and yes, as a 21 year old, I wanted to get out of Woonsocket.” Following boot camp in Orlando, Florida, Mary attended school in Norfolk, VA and Pensacola, FL and

then went on to duty stations in Colon, Republic of Panama, and Pensacola, Florida which is where she met her husband, Dave who was also on active duty in the Navy. “The time I spent in Panama probably had the strongest impact on me,” Mary reflected. “I was stationed there while Operation Just Cause was ramping up. Most Panamanians regarded Americans and their presence as a beacon of hope and realized the possibility of overthrowing the current corrupt regime, but they lacked the motivation to accomplish this on their own. Living in a foreign country that does not enjoy a democracy like ours made me appreciate the United States. I live in the greatest country in the world, and people in oppressed countries admire our strength and courage.” When asked what value she derived from serving, Mary said disci-

pline. “Without discipline, I wouldn’t have ambition, focus, and determination. Ultimately, my ambition to achieve higher goals is what led me to leave the military, because, let’s face it, one cannot make a lot of money while serving. That discipline through the years has been the foundation which enabled me to return to and finish college, and to grow a successful business.” “As I look back, Mount’s Catholic faith tradition really gave me a solid foundation in my relationship with God. During my service I experienced some stressful situations. My faith foundation gave me prayer, hope and peace to persevere through these obstacles. My service resulted in my settling in another part of the country, far from family in Rhode Island; this is by the grace of God and the strength of my faith.” 9

David Roderick, Dean of Students at Mount Captain, US Army Reserves

“I am a Captain in the United States Army Reserves and am attached to the 3200 Strategic Intelligence Group, Detachment 1. I joined the reserves in 1996 because I wanted to serve the country in some capacity. From 2004 -2005 I served at the Pentagon in Arlington, VA; February 2005- August 2005 in Baghdad, Iraq; May 2007- November 2007 I went back to Baghdad, Iraq; and from September 2011-July 2012 I served the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. I have many memories from my deployments, both good and bad. I formed bonds of friendships that will never be broken and experienced loss of teammates, the sorrow for which I will bear for a lifetime. However, the experience that had a strongest impact on me occurred in Afghanistan a country from another time, a people from another era. I was located in Helmand Province, where the fighting season is year around. I imagine if hell had rooms Helmand Province would be one of them. It was in this place that I truly learned the importance of team work, loyalty, and above all faith. I was attached to a Marine Special Forces team - no finer group of men have I ever known. It was our team and just us; everyone had a role to play, a job to do. There was no me or I, it was we and us. Our camp was located within an Afghan Commandoes (Afghanistan’s Special Forces) camp, on an Afghan Army base. Our assignment was to mentor the Afghan Commandoes and conduct missions with them. My team had only two commissioned officers - the team Captain and myself. The remainder of the team consisted of enlisted marines and sailors but everyone was treated equally 10

whether young or old, hardened combat veteran or first deployment. We were our brother’s keeper! While we lived this motto every day we were there, there is one day in particular that resonates with me. We were running a joint operation with a ranger team and their Afghan Commando group. The majority of my team was out running the mission. As the intel officer, I remained in camp with a skeleton crew handling communications and intelligence for the mission as well as camp security. In addition to our team, we had several civilian contractors whose safety we were responsible for. During this particular operation, one of the commandoes who was attached to the ranger team was accidentally killed by friendly fire. There already had been some turmoil between the ranger team and their commandoes so this incident only served to acerbate the situation. The mission plan had called for an early withdrawal of the ranger team. Their commandoes left my team with our commandoes lying in wait for any Taliban fighters who might return to the area thinking all of our forces had departed. On the day we were expecting the ranger team to return, my Afghan counterpart had come over to our camp to provide a warning. His troops had heard the ranger team’s commandoes discussing killing Americans in retaliation for their lost comrade. We already had a number of incidents across the country in which our Afghan counter-parts had turned their weapons on coalition forces. I had to take the threat seriously. I checked with my counter-part to ensure that my team was still in good standing with our commandoes. He ensured me that our relationship was strong and built on mutual respect. He stated that he did not trust the other Afghan commandoes and was legitimately concerned for our safety. I had to come up with a plan. The ranger team coming in was not aware of the threat; we had no way to convey it to them prior to their landing. I only had five team members with me, even with the ranger team we were outnumbered roughly 5 -1, no matter

how I looked at it if the Afghan commandoes decided to start shooting, some of us, if not all of us, were going to die. My task was to figure out how to best mitigate the losses. We needed to warn the ranger team as soon as the helicopters landed. We also had to have enough over watch to ensure any threats could be eliminated as quickly as possible. We had to drive two humvees and a flatbed truck to the landing strip in order to pick up the ranger team and their gear. My plan was simple. I dispersed four snipers among the three vehicles; we were going to get to the landing strip early and spread our vehicles out. The middle vehicle would have two snipers - the plan called for superior fire by position and the element of surprise. I was trying to prevent giving any rogue commandoes a chance to react. Once the ranger team landed, I was going to run out with one of my Sergeants to birds, grab the rangers and get off of the strip as soon as possible. If a commando decided to go rogue, my snipers were instructed to eliminate all threats. The Sergeant and I were going warn the rangers, get flat immediately and kill as many combatants as we possibly could. As we drove out to the strip, I momentarily lost my focus and thought of home and wondered what everyone was doing. I then wondered how they would get the news if things went wrong. As we pulled up to the strip, I regained my focus and regained my faith that today was not to be the day. Now removed in time and distance from that day and place I can reflect and ponder. Of all the days in my life that day is the one that most shook my very foundation. I was anchored in my beliefs and I withstood the storm. My time here at Mount has helped to solidify my faith. When I have been off in faraway places and things have been at their worst it helps to remember everything that is important in life, the people you love, your family, your friends and the place you call home. Mount has been a integral part of all of that for the past 16 years.”

Rev. Msgr. Ronald A. Newland, PA, KHS, Class of 1959 Chaplain/Colonel, US Air Force

“I was ordained in 1967 for the Archdiocese of Newark, and served in three parishes over the course of 11 years. I had not given much thought to the military chaplaincy until an invitational letter was sent in 1976 by the Military Ordinary, Cardinal Cooke, to, apparently, priests who were still of an eligible age to enter active duty. Curiosity got the better of me, and after spending several days with a priest friend at his active duty assignment, I was willing -at the age of 37- to try it; and that lasted a little over 22 years! As a military chaplain, you are a non-combatant, but may easily find yourself assigned to a field of combat. Your ministry is the same whether in uniform or in ‘civies’ you are a Catholic priest bringing the sacraments, consolation, and companionship to the men and women in uniform and to their families. But more than that, you represent the military’s commitment to provide for the ‘free exercise of religion’ by its members. This may be easy enough state-side, but may be a challenge in other areas of the world where one’s particular denominational church is either not present or not permitted.

I served at Travis AFB, CA; the remote radar sites of Alaska; the Air Force Academy; Osan Air Base, South Korea; Columbus AFB, MS; Torrejon Air Base, Spain; K.I.Sawyer AFB, MI; Incirlik Air Base, Turkey; RAF Lakenheath, England; and Sheppard AFB, TX. I was deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1990 as part of Operations Desert Shield and Storm; and while serving at Incirlik AB, Turkey, made frequent flights into Zakhu, Iraq, in support of the US troops stationed there during Operation Provide Comfort. I retired in 2000 with the rank of Colonel, and was invited by then archbishop (now cardinal) Edwin O’Brien to serve as chancellor of the Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS), located in Washington, DC. This was the new location of the newly instituted organization (1984) replacing the Military Ordinariate, or MO, that was located in New York City. The AMS is the endorsing agent for all Catholic priests seeking to enter the military chaplaincy, or to serve as contract priests at military installations or VA facilities. I served in that capacity, and retired from it in 2009. Previously, I mentioned curiosity, for that was an attitude stimulated at the Mount. Shortly after arriving as a boarder in September 1955, an invitation was made to the new students by Brother Henry Peter (Lussier) for joining the band. Well, I was signed up for piano lessons - and was told there was no provision for a piano in the band. Thus, this period of silence (he looking at me - and me at him). I broke the silence by asking: ‘What instrument do you need?’ He immediately replied ‘I need a tuba player.’ I responded ‘I’ll learn it!’ And so I did. When I returned in September 1956 for sophomore year, I noticed a new, strange looking instrument

recently purchased from sales of ‘World’s Finest Chocolate’ the previous Easter. Brother Henry-Peter told me it was a bassoon. I asked him ‘Who plays the bassoon in our band?’ Well, he just gave me that look, again! I asked, ‘Do you have the training book?’ And he handed me a copy of the Baldwin Band Builder training manual for bassoon. And thus I became Mount’s first bassoon player - and made All-State two years in a row! Like at Mount, in the military each and every assignment is an opportunity, for no two assignments are the same. Personnel are constantly changing. Priest-chaplains usually serve less than two years per assignment since we are ‘unaccompanied.’ Most other chaplains are married and, therefore, their tours are usually at least three years in duration. Consequently, one had to adapt quickly to the community by reviewing current programs, responding to incoming and outgoing personnel, and adjusting to the rhythm of this base’s mission. I am filled with the fondest memories of my four years at the Mount. Challenges, opportunities, and the inspiration to enter the seminary to serve others; encouragement and trust extended by Brothers Henry-Peter, Peter-Clavier, Michael, Leopold, Luke, and Stanislaus - to name a few. I still hear that challenging Latin expletive voiced by Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society, ‘Carpe Diem!’ I did, I have, I still am!” Monsignor is currently the weekend assistant at Blessed Trinity Parish in Rockaway Point, NY, and an organist for the 5pm Saturday evening Mass. (And working towards his fourth retirement!)

Our Students Say Thank You! “Words cannot describe how lucky we are to live in a country where we can feel safe at home. Thank you to those who leave their homes to protect our freedoms and our beautiful country. Thank you for risking your lives to protect ours. “ - Julia DiSpirito, Class of 2018 “I’m thankful for all the Military Mounties and all members of the military because they protect me and my family and friends. Because of them, I can do all the things I love to do while feeling safe.” - Christopher Baxter, Class of 2020 “Thank you for all the sacrifices you have made and giving up your life so I can live mine. Every day I get to see my family and I never realized until recently that the troops don’t get to see their families almost ever because they are fighting for us. During the holiday season, there is a lot to be thankful for like food, family, and friends, but I am mostly thankful for the men and women who are fighting for our freedom.” - Kristina Hagerman, Class of 2020 “To all Military Mounties - First, thank you so much for all your service. A few weeks ago, I was asked to sing the National Anthem at the Royal Mounties Mass at which plaques were dedicated to all of the Mount graduates who have served in the military, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear all of the alumni in attendance singing with me. It reminded me of the strong sense of community created by Mount, and I realized that this extends far beyond Chapel Hall. I know that you, in the noble vocation that you have chosen, spread the message that everyone she be known, valued, and treasured. Therefore I thank you not only for serving our country, but for serving all people with who you came into contact during your service. Thank you once again. God Bless, and Happy Holidays.” - Emily Mercier, Class of 2017 “I would like to extend my utmost gratitude to all the men and women who have served and made sacrifices for this great nation. You all are truly what makes the United States the land of the free and the home of the brave and for that, I am eternally and humbly grateful.” - Gregory Mumma, Class of 2016 12

“The United States Military is currently made up of a voluntary force of brave men and women who choose to serve, protect, and defend our right against any and all threats that may arise. Without our military, we would not be able to enjoy many of the things that we often take for granted such as freedom of speech, the right to vote, and the right to express our religious beliefs without the fear of persecution. Our military makes many sacrifices for us which is why it is important that we show our appreciation and take care of our veterans. We should show our veterans respect and help them out with any medical, financial, or other hardships they may have experienced because of their service. We should be thankful for these courageous men and women who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country and our way of life. God Bless our troops and may God Bless America!” - Isabella Coppolino, Class of 2019 “I am thankful for all the brave veterans who protect our country. I hope that they stay safe.” - Ellla Mundy, Class of 2022

“Thank you to the people that risk their lives to keep our country and world safe.” - Michael Boddy, Class of 2022 “I am very thankful for veterans because they sacrificed their lives for our freedom. We should be grateful for each soldier who comes home and for the great sacrifice each one of them has made, past and present. They have made a great contribution to America. We also need to keep the lost lives in our hearts and be very grateful to them.” - Isabelle Desaulniers, Class of 2021 “There isn’t much to say other than thank you. I am in awe of how you can put others before yourselves so willingly and take on such a great responsibility of people’s lives so nobly. How can words convey how lucky we are to have brave people like yourselves fighting for our safety, our security, and our freedom. They cannot, however they can try. So, for all that you risk, for all that you do, and for all that you’ve sacrificed. Thank you, from me to you.” - Claire Albright, Class of 2016

A Message from the Class of 2009 Earlier this year we lost our dear friend and classmate Patrick Cooney after a long battle with Leukemia. Patrick was an integral part of the Mount Saint Charles community for his six years at the Academy. We as a class would like to secure an enduring legacy for Patrick at the school where he and his family dedicated so much of their time, talent, and generosity throughout the years. With this intention, we have established the Patrick Lawrence Cooney Memorial Award to be presented every year at Academic Convocation to a rising senior who demonstrates the best of Patrick’s qualities to assist in their Mount tuition. To help those who did not have the pleasure of knowing Patrick, we would like to tell you a bit more our friend and classmate to understand the essence of this award.

About Patrick

The Award

Patrick Lawrence Cooney graduated from Mount Saint Charles in 2009. His attendance at Mount was never a guarantee as Patrick had to overcome incredible odds before ever becoming a Mountie. As a child, he fought and won two separate battles with Leukemia before enrolling at the school as a 7th grader. With his father serving as chorus teacher and his mother a member of the Mount staff, Patrick was already very close to the Mount community, and throughout his six years he added his own vision, insight, and creativity to the culture of the school. Taking after his father’s passion for music, Patrick was heavily involved in chorus and band performances and was an essential part of the annual Charitably Loud benefit concert. As a student, Patrick had an insatiable curiosity about the world around him and a bright scientific mind. Even after attending Mount, and later Fairfield University, Patrick never stopped learning and never stopped encouraging others to do the same. Not long after graduating from college, Patrick was again diagnosed with leukemia, and after a year-long battle with the illness passed away on April 23, 2015 surrounded by the love of his family.

Patrick’s friends and classmates from the Class of 2009 would like to honor someone that represents the best of his qualities that we came to know and love. The award shall be presented to a rising senior to assist with the cost of tuition for their final year. The recipient shall be chosen by Mount’s faculty and awarded to a student that demonstrates perseverance, having overcome adversity while maintaining a passion for learning and creativity. The student shall be someone who is truthful and authentic in their interactions and genuinely appreciative of the many gifts and talents of his or her peers. These were the qualities that defined Patrick Lawrence Cooney, these were his gifts to the Mount community, and we believe these qualities should be recognized.

Patrick fought this battle until the very end in a way that was uniquely Patrick – with a stubborn will and a rigid adherence to his beliefs that no burden was too great and that no outcome, no matter how improbable, was impossible. At no point did he give up on treatment or hope. At no point did he cease to exemplify his tremendous character. Patrick was generous with his humor and with his talent. He had an absolutely singular mind and a great reverence for authenticity and truth. It is these characteristics we wish to honor with the Patrick Lawrence Cooney Award.

It is our hope that throughout the years we can continue to recognize the unique cultural imprint that Patrick undoubtedly made at Mount Saint Charles. For any that have experienced first-hand the kindness and dedication of the Cooney family during their involvement with the school, or for those who have been moved by their story, please consider making a donation to the Patrick Lawrence Cooney Award via www.mountsaintcharles.org/giving/give_now. It would be meaningful to those he loved and a considerable gift to the award winners for years to come.

To secure the initial endowment for the award, we launched an online fundraising campaign. Thanks to the incredible generosity of his classmates, their families, and the greater Mount community, the initial endowment was secure within one week of the launch of the campaign.

Girls Varsity Tennis The girls from the varsity tennis team took part in a season long initiative to collect food for the hungry. Through Pass the Plate: A Fight to Feed, they reached out to all of the teams they competed against and encouraged them to bring a canned good when they came to play at Mount. The team donated more than 300 pounds of food and delivered to a local soup kitchen!

Maikah Bulpitt, Class of 2017 Junior Maikah Bulpitt just completed a wonderful service project for the community of Central Falls! Through a $150 donation from Dave’s Marketplace and with the help from her peers at Mount, she was able to collect 350lbs of food to be donated to Veterans Memorial Elementary School in Central Falls. Because of Maikah’s devotion to this project and the generous donations she received, Veterans Memorial was able to create Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for Central Falls families in need. “Everyone should be given food for the holidays. Just because you’re in need doesn’t mean you shouldn’t eat. No one should go hungry.” ~Maikah Bulpitt

Ellen Johnson, Class of 2016 Ellen Johnson, of Mendon, MA and a senior at Mount Saint Charles Academy, travelled with the USA Tap Team to compete in the International Dance Organization (IDO) World Tap Dance Championships in Reisa, Germany during the first week of December. The team was comprised of dancers from a dozen different states. After auditioning and being selected for a place on the USA Tap Team this past summer, the dancers represented the United States at the competition known as the “Olympics of tap dance” and competed against tap dancers from over 30 countries around the world. The team competed with 17 different dances, including solos, duos, trios, small groups and formations, within three separate age categories. Having danced since she was 3 years old, Johnson performed a solo and an adult formation in the adult category (ages 16 and over). She was one of three female adult soloists selected to represent the United States and compete in this category. “Mount Saint Charles Academy is very proud of the hard work and dedication which has brought Ellen to this point in her dancing experience,” Edwin Burke, principal of Mount, said. “She is a valued member of our school community and a wonderful young person who carries herself with grace. Her participation is a tribute to her commitment and perseverance.”
