What do you do from day to day to take care of your health?

When asked this question, it is a common reaction to focus just on the things you do to maintain your physical health - eating well, drinking plenty of water, exercising regularly. But what about your mental health and social connections?

Research is increasingly pointing to the importance of strong social connections in maintaining good health. Social connection has been shown to lower anxiety and depression, lead to high self-esteem and even improve our immune systems. Some studies suggest that a lack of human connection can be even more harmful to your health than factors such as obesity, smoking and high blood pressure.

Given we are living increasingly busy lives, searching for that elusive balance between work and play, it can be easy for our social connections to fall be the wayside. As we age, lifestyle factors such as changes in health and mobility, loss of family, friends or a spouse and commuting challenges can all make it even harder to maintain connections.

These changes in lifestyle factors can also be compounded for older people who are not up to speed with technology.

Easylink is a not-for-profit community organisation providing vital services to Northern Beaches community members including transport, social outings, medical shuttles and more. As part of the 2022 ClubGRANTS, Mounties and Harbord Diggers has funded Easylink’s eight week Learn & Lunch program focused on digital and online technology.

Easylink will pick participants up from their home and take them to a private class run by Manly Computer Pals, before transporting the group to Harbord Diggers to have lunch together.

Easylink General Manager, Dan Giles commented on the timeliness and importance of the program since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

“As a community transport provider, we are in regular contact with our more senior residents and what we observed during the COVID-19 pandemic was another layer of social isolation where elderly people who

were trying to keep connected with their community were unable to do so due to limited abilities with digital technology,” he explained.

“This eight-week program will not only teach and empower participants to embrace digital technology in order to remain connected to friends and loved ones, it will also provide them with opportunities for social interaction in a fun and safe environment during the classes and while they enjoy lunch afterwards. “We are so grateful to receive financial support from Mounties Group. Thanks to this funding we can provide digital education that will keep on giving, one cherished family Facetime call at a time,” he concluded.

This year, Mounties Group’s ClubGRANTS funding has seen more than $1.2 million given back to the local community via 75 projects across Sydney, the Northern Beaches and Central Coast.

When should my child start swimming lessons and when is it time to stop? These are questions most Australian parents ask. As the organisation that has been doing it longer than anyone else, here is what Carlile Swimming believes.

The first thing they know for sure, is too many Australian children stop swimming before they have the skills to be safer in and around water.

Drowning statistics in recent years have been a national tragedy. Recent research reveals almost 50% of Australian children graduating from primary school can’t swim 50 metres or keep themselves afloat for two minutes.

Swimming saves lives and being able to swim 50 metres in a controlled environment at the school swimming carnival is nowhere near enough. Imagine if your child’s leg rope broke 400 metres from shore?

Forbes Carlile coined the phrase “to swim well is an asset for life” and in Carlile’s view that means being able to swim 400 metres freestyle with good technique, along with good technique in each form stroke.

This doesn’t mean your child will go on to be the next Emma McKeon but they will have the skills to enjoy swimming as a healthy pastime for the rest of their lives.

As for the first question, when should your child start? The answer is the earlier the better.

Carlile pioneered baby teaching in Australia, opening Sydney’s first indoor learn to swim centre and they run water confidence classes from three months of age.

Being in water is a familiar and comforting memory for babies, having spent nine months in the womb surrounded and supported by amniotic fluid. This could be one reason why so many babies love swimming with mum or dad.

For toddlers those memories have faded, and some can develop fear of the water. However, with patience and the right approach older children will learn the skills they need.

Make sure you find a swim school with a caring, gentle approach, with warm water and a pool with ledges where children will feel safe and a structured program that helps children learn the skills necessary to progress to the next level.
