Often a mere three places weren’t enough to contain the local love for music, festivals, venues, comedians, theater, film, dance, trivia and drag nights. The 20 band categories alone turned up nine ties. And there were a number of multiple wins in the section, with LEAF taking Best Local Music Festival and Best Music Festival at Which to Camp; Amanda Ann Platt and her band, The Honeycutters, together racked up the votes in the Singer/ Songwriter, Acoustic/Folk, Americana/Country and favorite All-Around Band categories; Sirius.B also placed a number of times, in favorite All-Around Band, World, Acoustic/Folk and Rock (there are few places in the world, beyond Asheville,

And some passionate voting: “Anywhere where Bill was,” one fan said of Buffalo Wild Wings’ team trivia event. But you, WNC, so adore the arts that you were willing to give shout-outs not only to the usual suspects, but to the lesser known, little known and completely off-the-radar (though no less deserving of mention): We, too, would love to see the “Hellbilly Hootenanny put on by the bootleggers” gets its due in the coming year. Water system saga: Most Important Local News Story
W
orking in local media is all about trying to connect with readers, viewers and listeners. And this year’s poll results helped reveal some of the people, outlets and stories that kept people most informed and interested. Once again, longtime Asheville Citizen-Times writer John boyle won in the Local Print Reporter category for his funny “Answer Man” columns, as well as those that drive community debate on weightier subjects, such as the recent controversies surrounding the Asheville Police Department. “It is gratifying to know I’m connecting with WNC readers, and they seem to appreciate what I’m doing,” he says. An anchor/reporter at WLOS News 13 for three decades, Darcel Grimes responded to her win in the Local TV Personality/ Announcer category with similar appreciation. “I am so thankful to the people of Western North Carolina for inviting me into their homes for so many years,” she says. “It is always rewarding to know that you are connecting with your viewers.” On the radio waves, WNCW 88.7 proved to be your favorite station, though KISS Country’s eddie foxx earned approval as the top Local Radio Personality. 38

In online media, the Ashvegas site (run by Citizen-Times staffer Jason Sandford) won big, praised as Best Local Blog and Website. The honor of being your favorite Social Media Personality went to What Should AVL Call Me. The mystery woman/man behind the brand insists on anonymity, but wins followers with a playful attitude on Twitter (@wsavlcallme) and a Tumblr site that pokes fun at Asheville eccentricities. In terms of stories, voters seem to have conflicting feelings about a state proposal to transfer control of the local water system from the city of Asheville to the Metropolitan Sewage District. As the measure sits in legal limbo, you simultaneously find it to be one of the most important local news stories, one of the most overreported and one of the most under-reported stories. Good luck to the editors trying to make sense of that. Meanwhile, voters showed love to several Xpress staffers, including alli marshall, who won Best Local Print Arts Reporter for the third year in a row and max cooper, who won first place in the Local News Photographer or Photojournalist category after only a couple of years on the job. ake believe is that magic potion adults would pay a premium for if it meant less work, more play and a nap time. In the formative Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, viewers had to hop aboard a model trolley just to get to the trippy kingdom of “Make-Believe.” In Western North Carolina, however, no such fantasy transportation is required to access all the fun — both real and imagined — that the area has to offer. In fact, when you think about it, there really aren’t that many boundaries separating the kid world from the adult one. Sure, they can’t drive cars or hold down 9-to-5 jobs, but children are just as capable of hiking, biking and enjoying the multitude of outdoor activities as their parents. Tots are as regular a fixture at local breweries as their imbibing, Chaco-wearing parents. And when parents and kids need a break from one another, there are

dozens of camps ready and willing to harbor kid refugees during the summer (Tekoa, Rockamount, YMCA, to name a few). In short, this is a great place to be a wee one. No imagination required. The winners of these kid-friendly categories understand creativity and imagination. They also know it’s as important to playcate adults as it is their offspring. Of course, even the adult world can sometimes interfere with fun. One multiple-category winner, The Health Adventure, announced in July it would be closing down after 45 years of providing youth-friendly health education. In a statement, Executive Director Paige Wheeler said, “We can only hope that someday the right combination of partners can come together to fill this void with another interactive science and health center worthy of our community.” — Julia Ritchey
