Emily Brydon interview

On the road to Vancouver 2010 (at last) By Rebecca Edwards Free Press Staff

“T

hank God it is finally here,” says Emily Brydon when asked how it feels to be days away from the 2010 Olympics. “There has been a lot of anticipation and a lot of speculation, a lot of talking – now it’s time to actually do it. It will be good to just go out there knowing we’ve worked hard, we’ve done everything we needed to do and now it’s time to shine.” Speaking to The Free Press on the journey from Vancouver to Whistler on Tuesday, Brydon said that, despite losing a number of skiers to injury, the alpine ski team is feeling optimistic. “We came back from Europe and everyone has done their own preparation. I think they feel really

this is what we have been working for. “In one sense you are trying to keep everything the same and also you want to embrace the Olympic spirit and everything it represents and use that spirit to push harder.” Emily previously said her ability to attend the opening ceremony in Whistler on Friday night will be “ruled by the weather gods.” “I need at least two training runs – if I get them by Friday I can go, if one is cancelled then Saturday becomes more important for me.” She says her mom Rosemary has told her about the Go Emily Go signs appearing around the Elk Valley and laughs when she hears that local

schools plan to show their students her race on Wednesday Feb. 17: “That means I’ll be more popular with those kids because I get them out of going to school!” She adds: “Fernie is really like a part of my team, there are so many people that have supported me I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing here without them. “As much as it’s my dream, it’s also the dream of Fernie and my friends and family. “Each race that I do is an accomplishment in itself and one step closer to my bigger dream. “I want them to enjoy it as much as I am enjoying it. They are as much a part of my career as I am.”

to the Olympic downhill run at Whistler Creekside many times over the last year. “It is one of my favourite courses,” says Emily. “I have a lot of miles on it, I know it well, that is definitely an advantage to us. “I could have the poten-

tial of five training runs and every run is about picking a section and working on that section. “Everything I have done this year has been in preparation for this event – Lake Louise [where she won a silver and bronze] was really important for me but
