ith Japanese restaurants in one direction, Vietnamese, Indian and Thai places in the other, and a buzzing beer garden just a few steps away, it’s pretty easy to walk right past the small and unassuming Song Pa Korean Cuisine. A new addition to the global buffet that is downtown Mountain View, Song Pa might not exactly expand your culinary horizons but it does provide some authentic Korean flavors, albeit toned down for local palates. If your knowledge of Korean food starts and ends at kimchi, then Song Pa offers an easy introduction — if you are looking for the latest in jjajangmyeon, bingsu or tteokguk, you might need to go elsewhere. Weekend

Song Pa’s spicy beef soup is served in a brass bowl. Continued from previous page

Song Pa is a small place, with just 10 or so tables and a one-page menu listing mostly standard Korean fare. It opened in February, replacing the well-established Totoro, which had offered up Korean cooking for almost 15 years. Decor is sparse: a few laminated close-ups of food scattered on cream-colored walls, unadorned tables and a dropdown screen blocking the view into an open kitchen. Design wise, it’s pretty unmemorable,

but that is certainly not the restaurant’s draw. Both at lunch and at dinner there is a steady stream of customers: mostly young, mostly Asian and most wearing laminated name-tags from their nearby offices. Pleasant young greeters make eye contact when you enter and then gesture in the general direction of an open table. Once you order, your server returns with banchan, small side dishes including kimchi, mung-bean sprouts, cucumber, glazed sweet pota-

to, spicy cubes of tofu and a miso dipping sauce. These tastes are designed to balance f lavors and were tasty nibbles both on their own and blended into our main dishes. Song Pa’s kimchi is made in-house, and its fermentation was nicely complex — crispy, salty and briny with a dose of umami. The menu features soups, rice dishes, barbecue, stir-

fries and a good variety of vegetarian selections. While many Korean restaurants provide tabletop grills for customized barbecue, at Song Pa the meat, pork and chicken are cooked in the kitchen and delivered by servers. The stone bowl bibimbap ($14) arrived sizzling and steaming. Ingredients are arranged on top of a mound

of white rice that crackles and pops as it continues to cook in the scorchingly hot bowl. Lightly marinated beef is coupled with wilted spinach, slivers of carrot, mung beans and zucchini, then topped with raw egg. I found the dish pedestrian and bland, though the bits of crunchy rice at the bottom of the bowl mixed in with the rest of the compo-

Rice at the bottom of the stone bowl bibimbop acquires a pleasantly crunchy texture.

nents gave it an interesting texture. Barbecued beef short ribs, or galbi ($13 at lunch; $19 at dinner), were thin-cut across the bone and dry-marinated in a balanced blend of sweet and tangy. They arrived topped with a mound of sautÊed onions, yet more kimchi and a perfect dome of innocuous white rice. The meat was seasoned with a meager hand and tough from too much time on the grill. Kimchi pancakes ($12) were prepared perfectly — crisp

on the outside, silky smooth on the inside, but here, too, the f lavor was bland. Though plenty of cabbage was mixed in with the batter, there was little evidence of the distinctive, tangy bite of kimchi. Soups, on the other hand, appear to be a strong point. Beef dumpling soup ($12) was loaded with delicious dumplings and clusters of clear noodles in a piquant broth garnished with scallions. Its deep f lavors were set off by an egg cooked in the boiling hot liquid. Other soup selections

come with a whole egg that you can break into the simmering bowl on your own. Beverages include beer, rice wine and soju, the Korean equivalent of Japanese sake. Servings are more than generous, and servers are attentive and charming. Song Pa is a good addition to dow ntow n Mou nta in View’s gastronomic buffet for diners interested in dabbling in Korean food. But the restaurant needs a bit more spark to draw repeat diners once that initial curiosity has been sated. Email Ruth Schechter at ruths315@sbcglobal.net. V

Freedom fighters ‘THE BIRTH OF A NATION’ REVISITS IMPORTANT HISTORY 001/2 (Century 16, 20) The story of enslaved African American preacher Nat Turner is not what one would call “commercial.” Turner incited a rebellion of slaves and free blacks in 1831 Virginia. And so it is a story of physical and emotional violence and staggering injustice perpetrated by whites against blacks, and the story of homicidal justice exacted by blacks on whites in claiming freedom. “The Birth of a Nation” marks the directorial debut of actor Nate Parker (“Red Tails”), who also wrote the screenplay and served as a producer. In choosing that title, Parker has historical and political points to make both about American life (in a poetic coda) and American cinema, since Parker shares the title with D.W. Griffith’s notoriously, virulently racist 1915 epic. These flourishes suggest a filmmaker with an urgent point of view. But that’s less apparent in the moments that come between title and fadeout, as Parker essays Turner’s life as a slave, his service

as a preacher (exploited by slave owners), his romance with a fellow slave named Cherry (Aja Naomi King), and the events leading to, including, and following the bloody uprising. The film accumulates power as it heads toward its climax and bitter end. No one could be unmoved by the atrocities of slavery and the atrocities of the rebellion and the largely misdirected capital punishment meted out as a result, all brutal (and mostly historically accurate). To Parker’s credit, he dramatizes a debate over the wisdom of the rebellion, given that the freedoms won are sure to be short-lived and violently consequential to the community. Still, the depiction of Turner as a romantic hero seeking vengeance, with mystical righteousness, raises some obvious problems. A

more deeply considered interpretation of Turner’s story would at least cultivate some ambiguity about his mental health, given the visions he reported and his claim that God had directly endorsed his course of action. In a moment when the conversation about race, and racially motivated violence, in America has become more audible, “The Birth of a Nation” is well-positioned to become a part of that conversation. Unsettlingly, Parker’s historical film depicts an uncivil war that bears comparison to our modern racial struggles, and while it’s history not to be forgotten, it’s also not to be mischaracterized. Rated R for disturbing violent content, and some brief nudity. One hour, 31 minutes. — Peter Canavese

Murder, She Drank EMILY BLUNT IS THE CRIMESOLVING ‘GIRL ON THE TRAIN’ 001/2 (Century 16, 20) Who knew director Tate Taylor (“The Help,” “Get On Up”) aspired to be Adrian Lyne (“Fatal Attraction”, “Unfaithful”)? Taylor’s R-rated adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ bestselling debut novel “The Girl on the Train” comes awash in nudity, laden with sex scenes and psychotic violence. So it has that going for it. But seriously, folks, “The Girl on the Train” is an ugly story that, on screen, plays like a mental-health exploitation picture. In the hands of Alfred Hitchcock, that can get you “Psycho.” In the hands of Tate Taylor, not so much. Hawkins’ story, adapted by Erin Cressida Wilson (“Secretary”), does have a Hitchcockian hook: a train window rather than a “rear window” serves as Rachel Watson’s vantage point on households in trouble. The unemployed, alcoholic divorcee (Emily Blunt) still commutes to nowhere every day, making a point to spy on her

ex-husband Tom (Justin Theroux); Anna (Rebecca Ferguson), the ex-mistress that became his new wife; and their neighbors Megan and Scott Hipwell (Haley Bennett and Luke Evans), who appear to be practicing hard for the Sex Olympics. All the while, Rachel sucks the plastic straw on her travel tumbler of vodka as if it were a baby bottle, which is even more disturbing given how many babies (and wishes for babies) figure into the lurid plot. Hobbled by overripe dialogue and at-times ridiculous situations, Ferguson and Bennett struggle to make their characters seem like more than sexist constructs. Predictably, it’s Blunt who

almost holds the picture together, with a turn better than the movie deserves. Like almost everything in “Girl on the Train,” Blunt’s performance threatens to tip over into comedy, but she mightily overcomes Hawkins’ unlikely contrivances to ground Rachel in psychological realism. With its round-robin of affairs and alcoholic blackouts and domestic violence, failed IVF and aborted pregnancies and babies in danger, it’s no wonder the plot necessitates a therapist (Édgar RamÍrez). After these 112 minutes, you may want one, too. Rated R for violence, sexual content, language and nudity. One hour, 52 minutes. — Peter Canavese
