Veggie Grill | 565 San Antonio Road, Suite 26, Mountain View For an institution truly dedicated to vegetarian and vegan food, look no further than Veggie Grill in Mountain View. The fast-casual restaurant chain serves up innovative food — minus the meat — in a bright, modern space with wood-topped tables and soft lighting from hanging spherical fixtures. Creative veggie-focused entrees that hit the spot include the Sonoran summer bowl, ($10.95) with organic quinoa, black beans, fire-roasted corn, avocado, salsa, jalapeño and tortilla strips in a roasted red-pepper sauce. Other satisfying choices: the crispy cauliflower bites ($6.45) of panko-breaded cauliflower florets served with a sweet and spicy orange dipping sauce, and the banh mi salad ($9.95), which is loaded with organic tofu, eggplant, pickled carrots, white cabbage, cucumbers and daikon, accented with basil, cilantro, mint, kale and a five-spice glaze. A popular sandwich among herbivores and carnivores alike is the Santa Fe crispy chickin’ sandwich ($10.95), according to its vice president of marketing, Leah Smith. It’s loaded with lettuce, tomato, red onion, avocado and a spicy mayo. The fried “chickin’” is a vegetable protein that is marinated and seasoned for a crispy coating “that delivers a sensory experience in terms of flavor and texture,” Smith said. Veggie Grill also offers a selection of organic iced teas and juices — no sugary sodas here. Continued on next page

Veggie Garden | 2464 W El Camino Real, Mountain View If you’re a vegan on a budget, you can’t do much better than a trip to family-owned Veggie Garden in Mountain View. Lorita Teng and her husband opened the restaurant after their daughter developed a skin allergy and their family doctor advised a change in diet, Teng said in an interview, and they felt compelled to spread the gospel of the vegan lifestyle. The small-yet-cozy restaurant offers traditional Chinese food that is completely meat-, dairy- and egg-free. Try the mouth-watering house-made wontons ($7.95) stuffed with fresh cabbage, carrots and zucchini and topped with chili oil. The dumplings are served on a bed of bean sprouts, shredded cucumbers and red cabbage, with a peanut dipping sauce.

The meat substitute, which is imported from Taiwan, is made from soy-bean fiber and shiitake mushrooms, which mimic the texture of meat, Teng said. “It’s good because there’s a lot of fiber, so you feel full but you don’t get all that fat, she said. Teng credits the success of the restaurant to the quality of the ingredients they use. “Our food is not oily like other Chinese restaurants, and our vegetables are very fresh because we don’t order a lot. We order little by little, she said. If you have food allergies, employees will do what they can to accommodate you, Teng added.

VEGETARIAN/VEGANFRIENDLY LYFE Kitchen | 167 Hamilton Ave., Palo Alto LYFE Kitchen is not a completely meat-free restaurant, but it has an extensive menu with many vegan and vegetarian-friendly dishes — and all under 600 calories. The fastcasual restaurant on Hamilton Avenue in downtown Palo Alto, voted best vegetarian restaurant by Best Of Palo Alto voters four years in a row, serves up Instagram-worthy meals inside a large, bright and modern space with a vertical herb garden as the focal point. For vegans, there’s the rich sweet corn chowder ($5), which has the creaminess of traditional corn chowder but is made with cashew cream (it’s also glutenfree). Or, try the quinoa crunch bowl ($10), a popular item among vegans and carnivores alike, said Robert Griffin, the senior brand manager. The filling and flavorful dish comes with quinoa, fresh, crunchy vegetables (like snap peas), avocado, arugula and an edamame hummus, all tossed with a chipotle vinaigrette and Palo Alto Firefighters hot sauce. Most of the ballot-defined projects are massive and very complex, requiring years to plan, design and construct. Although in just the 9th year of a 30 year program (tax collection started mid-2006), VTA has achieved significant results toward meeting Measure A goals including: • Extending BART to the Santa Clara County cities of Milpitas, San Jose and Santa Clara, with the extension to Berryessa currently trending ahead of schedule and under budget • Extending and improving light rail service with projects such as the Mountain View Double-Track and Tasman Drive Pocket Track projects enabling enhanced service to the new Levi’s Stadium, Sunnyvale and Mountain View • Completion of environmental and planning to increase Caltrain service and electrify the system from Palo Alto to Gilroy. VTA is fully committed to successfully delivering Measure A projects. DENIRO PLAYS THE MAN IN ROBERTO DURÁN’S CORNER 001/2 (Century 16 and 20) They called boxing great Roberto Durán “Manos de Piedra,” so it’s understandable that the new biopic about him should be called “Hands of Stone.” And yet, it’s not the best title for this dramatic treatment, which repeatedly makes the point that brute force isn’t as important in the ring as the mental game. As Durán’s legendary trainer Ray Arcel, DeNiro opens the picture by saying, “Ring sense is an art,” later pounding in to Durán, “It’s all in the head,” that strategy is as important as technique. “Hands of Stone” would be a better movie were it more “in the head,” but as it is, the picture offers the simple pleasures of both a conventional biopic and a boxing movie. And while, ultimately, it imposes a misleadingly tidy shape on Durán’s life and career, this account by writer-director Jonathan Jakubowicz doesn’t shy from depicting Durán as petulant, arrogant, insecure, reckless, and generally unlikeable. Granted, much of Durán’s bad behavior is on record, but Jakubowicz and star Edgar Ramírez keep their Durán, the picture’s ostensible hero, edgy to a daring degree. The action begins in 1971 at Madison Square Garden, where Durán’s manager Carlos Eleta (Rubén Blades) introduces old friend Arcel to Durán. At 72, the canny Arcel has a reputation for training nearly 20 world champions, and he’s quickly sold on Durán (in 66 seconds to be exact, the length of the Durán vs. Huertas fight). Durán initially rejects Arcel because he represents the Panamian lightweight’s sore spot: as an American, Arcel bears in Durán’s mind the sins of his country and of Durán’s father, an American who left Durán and his mother to fend for themselves in the Panamanian slums. “Hands of Stone” flashes back to fill in Durán’s youth as a street urchin, an illiterate scrapper who thieves to eat, learns boxing from

Edgar Ramírez, Robert De Niro and Rubén Blades star in the real-life story of boxer Roberto Durán in “Hands of Stone.”

a tender age, and develops a cockof-the-walk external confidence that belies his internalized fear of hunger. Durán’s survivor mentality and, specifically, his experience of true hunger inform his later erratic behavior. And whether out of loyalty or insecurity, Durán brings with him to America not only Eleta, but his trainer “Plomo” (Pedro Perez) and his flamboyant street mentor “Chaflan” (Óscar Jaenada). “Hands of Stone” also weaves in the trajectory of Durán’s relationship with Felicidad Iglesias (Ana de Armas), history of late-20th-century U.S.-Panama relations, namely in the political gamesmanship around the Panama Canal. But Jakubowicz mostly focuses on the role of Arcel in focusing Durán to achieve his greatest wins and tragically failing to do so in his greatest loss (remembered in boxing history as the “no mas” fight). Both involve competitor Sugar Ray Leonard, convincingly portrayed by Usher Raymond. Flawed but enjoyable, “Hands of Stone” proves simplistic in dramatic terms and slippery in its point-of-view even as it manages to engage interest. Colorful,

kinetic visuals and dynamic sound keep the film more cinematic than the typical sports movie, but above all, the film works as well as it does on the strength of its acting. DeNiro is in fine, grounded form, and his verbal sparring with Ramírez, Blades, John Turturro (representing the mob’s reach into boxing), Reg E. Cathey (as promoter Don King), and, albeit more tenderly, Ellen Barkin as Arcel’s wife elevates the film, the overlapping dialogue highly effective in infusing naturalistic energy. Each co-star — and, of course, most crucially, the excellent Ramírez, who obviously developed a rapport with DeNiro playing his son-in-law in last year’s “Joy” — goes toe-to-toe with DeNiro in scenes that lend the film much of its entertainment value. “Hands of Stone” may well convince you of little more than that Roberto Durán was a talented boxer and a worldclass jerk, but it’s a decently informative biopic about a sportsman under unique pressures. HELL OR HIGH WATER000

Old-school bank robbery meets the new economy — and the New West — in Taylor Sheridan’s “Hell or High Water,” a lean tale of cops and robbers, cowboys

and Indians, and customers and bankers. In West Texas, two brothers begin knocking off branches of the Texas Midlands Bank with unnervingly reckless abandon. Younger brother Toby Howard (Chris Pine) is the grim mastermind, while his volatile older brother Tanner Howard (Ben Foster) has the enthusiasm for violence to ensure the plan keeps moving forward. On their trail are two Texas Rangers: Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges), a canny old lawman due for mandatory retirement, and his testy partner Alberto

Parker (Gil Birmingham). Tart banter helps keep “Hell or High Water” moving from one tense action scene to the next, as well as the mockingly sunny aesthetic that unforgivingly keeps at the fore the beauty and mercilessness of the territory in contention. Most importantly, this is a film for actors to do fine, unshowy work. In particular, Pine’s at his best in keeping Toby’s subtle determination tightly coiled. Rated R for some strong violence, language throughout and brief sexuality. One hour, 42 minutes. —P.C.

The purchaser shall have no further recourse against the beneficiary, the Trustor or the trustee. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 877484-9942 or visit this Internet Web site www.USA-Foreclosure.com or www. Auction.com using the file number assigned to this case 7023.115459. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
