STORTI Time.... a note from your principal Happy Fall! I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather!! We have been focusing on our literacy program these past few weeks. Our students have dedicated lots of time to building stamina as readers! Ask your child what this means. Through our reading model, we are differentiating reading instruction to meet the needs of all students. At Pinewood School, all students receive grade level instruction. We meet them where they are at by providing extra support in both above and below grade level needs. Teachers are working hard to meet each reader's individual needs.
The "INS" and "OUTS" of our school parking lot. Thanks for your cooperation with dismissal at the end of the school day. (Please refer to the document on our web page with specific details.) You may pick your child up in two ways at PW: 1. Pick your child up in the North Lot - please stay in car and he/she will walk to you. 2. Plan a meeting place (red or blue zone), get out of your car, walk to the zone and wait for your child in one of the zones. Our top priority is everyone's safety. We are thankful for your patience, understanding and kindness in helping us keep all the students at Pinewood safe.

Disney Pajama Orchestra Concert-Thursday, October 8 @ 6:30pm-Varsity Gym Please join the Irondale Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, October 8, at 6:30pm in the Irondale Gymnasium for the annual Disney Pajama Concert! Bring your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews - anyone from one month to one century! Wear your pajamas or favorite Disney character costume, sing along to your favorite Disney tunes, and enjoy a night of wonderful music. In addition to the music, we will have free Disney tattoos as well as Disney princesses and Disney Cars backdrops for you to take pictures in front of. Bring your singing voices and your cameras...we hope to see you there!
**Fun-Da-Thon Breaking News** In response to the concern with technology issues and timelines, we have extended the deadline for Fun-Da-Thon contributions to THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8th. All envelopes are now due Thursday, October 8th. If you would like another envelope, please send your child to office. Winners will be announced on Thursday as well. Family Library Night The next Family Library Night is October 8 from 5pm-7pm. Join us Thursdays for a free dinner from 5pm-5:30pm followed by story time, crafts, technology projects, guests speakers, reading, homework help, extra book checkouts and more. We meet EVERY Thursday that we have school from September 24-May 26th,
Meet and Greet Night October 8 4:20pm-7:20pm All teaching staff grades 1-5 are available to conference with parents. Parents signed up for a time slot during Back to School Open House, If you did not sign up then and would like a conference, please contact your child's teacher for a time. He or she would be happy to meet with you.

PAWSS Start spreading the word! Pinewood is a community that is growing is so many positive ways. The PAWSS team and teachers have been hard at work helping students find their Spark, what excites them in life- with a better understanding of how postive devlopmental relationships can make the difference for all students. Combined with other community building ideas, PW has strengthened its expectations in all areas of the school in using Above/Below the Line expectations, in the use of Panda $ in classrooms, and Fix-It plans to help students with reconciliation Ask a student from PW how their year has started... 10 Ways To Be An Upstander Putting an end to bullying is everyone's responsibility. When we work together and stand strong against bullying, we are creating communities that are stronger, safer, and more supportive. Here's how YOU can help: 1. Learn more about mean, cruel, and bullying behavior. Educate yourself and your community with the resources on BullyBust.org. For example: Why do kids bully? Where does bullying take place most often in your school? What are the effects of bullying? How can we prevent it? Understanding this information will help you if you are bullied, and will help you to stand up to bullies if a friend or classmate is being bullied. 2. Help others who are being bullied. Be a friend, even if this person is not yet your friend. Go over to them. Let them know how you think they are feeling. Walk with them. Help them to talk to an adult about what just happened. (Just think for a moment about how great this would be if someone did this for you when you were being picked on or hurt!) 3. Stop untrue or harmful messages from spreading online or in person. If someone sends a message or tells you a rumor that you know is untrue, stand up and let the person know it is wrong. Think about how you would feel if someone spread an untrue rumor about you. Don’t laugh, send the message on to friends, or add to the story. Make it clear that you do not think that kind of behavior is cool or funny. 4. Get friends involved. Share this site (and other related sites) with friends. Let people know that you are an upstander and encourage them to be one too. Sign the Stand Up Pledge, and make it an everyday commitment for you and your friends. 5. Make friends outside of your circle. Eat lunch with someone who is alone. Show support for a person who is upset at school, by asking them what is wrong or bringing them to an adult who can help. 6. Be aware of the bullying and upstander policies at your school and keep it in mind when you witness bullying. What are the school’s bully prevention policies? Are there also policies that “catch” kids “being good”? How can you support school rules and codes of conduct support students and adults doing the right thing? If there isn’t a policy, get involved or ask teachers or front office staff to speak about how you can reduce bullying. 7. Welcome new students. If someone is new at your school, make an effort to introduce them around and make them comfortable. Imagine how you would feel leaving your friends and coming to a new school. 8. Refuse to be a “bystander” and be a role model to others instead! If you see friends or classmates laughing along with the bully, tell them that they are contributing to the problem. Let them know that kind of behavior is not okay in your school. 9. Respect others' differences and help others to respect differences. It’s cool for people to be different—that’s what makes all of us unique. Join a diversity club at school to help promote tolerance in your school. 10. Develop an Upstander/ Prevention program or project with a teacher or principal’s support that will help reduce bullying and promote socially responsible behavior in school. Bring together a team of students, parents and teachers who are committed to preventing bullying, and create a community-wide project to raise awareness, share stories and develop helpful supports.
