"Building an inclusive community of responsible, respectful and resourceful citizens who value learning."

MVHS - HOME OF THE MUSTANGS!

From the Principal‌. Hello Mounds View High School Families, Wow! It seems like school just started, yet we have moved out of September and we are now fully immersed into the month of October. The start of the school year has been magnificent, with excellent work occurring in classrooms and activities galore for students to enjoy. Our 9th graders, and others new to MVHS, have also been warmly greeted by students and staff and each and every one of these students has become a wonderful addition to the Mounds View High School community. Looking forward, the month of October brings several events, as well as a few days of respite for our students. We have a Communication Night on October 13, as well as concerts and athletic performances for several ensembles and athletics teams. MVHS will also host a college financial planning night on October 18. There is no school for students on October 14 (staff instructional day), as well as during our annual Education Minnesota (formerly MEA) Conference break October 20-October 21. In conclusion, I want to sincerely thank you all for your continued support of all MVHS students and Mounds View High School. When students come prepared to learn, it makes our jobs as educators so much easier. For this, we thank you. Respectfully,

Dr. Jeffery P. Ridlehoover Principal

Get to Know ‘Em Meet Laura Knoll Hi! I’m Laura Knoll, a new math teacher here at Mounds View! I am teaching ARCC Precalculus and AP Statistics this year. I graduated from UWRiver Falls in January; it’s my first year teaching, and I am loving it so far. It’s so much fun to be able to hang out with high schoolers all day and do math! I have really been enjoying getting to know all my students these first couple weeks! In my free time, I enjoy being outside (as long as it isn’t too cold!) walking, fishing, biking, hiking, just sitting on the deck enjoying the sun, you name it! When it isn’t so nice outside, I enjoy reading and watching Netflix (Supernatural is my favorite show!). I also love to cook, usually very healthy food; I love fruits and vegetables. I have a pet turtle and her name is Peep. I am looking forward to the rest of the school year; getting to know the students and school more and attending Mounds View High School events!

Meet Katie Randall My name is Katie Randall and I teach Spanish II and IV at Mounds View High School. I received my undergraduate degree in Spanish Teaching from the University of Minnesota Duluth and my Masters of Teaching and Learning from Saint Mary’s University in Winona. I had been teaching Spanish for 12 years in another district before joining the Mustangs this year. I am very excited to be working in this district! When I am not teaching, I spend my time with my family. My husband Don and I are proud parents of our two daughters, Mary and Maggie. Mary is a very busy two-yearold and we spend a lot of time taking her to local parks, seeing animals at the zoo and going swimming. Maggie is only three months old and is happy to go along on any adventure. My husband graduated from Mounds View and he is very excited that his daughters are future Mustangs!

9th Grade

It has been a pleasure meeting with our 9th grade students and families this summer. Through these we have been able to establish partnerships between school and home and create valuable 4-year plans. The freshmen participated in a respect retreat at the end of September. While one-half of the grade were at the retreat, the other one-half met with deans to get them into Naviance and connect with them to see how the start of the school year has gone. If you haven’t had an opportunity to meet with your dean, please contact them with the information to the left to set up a time.

10th Grade

Sophomore students will be taking the Pre-ACT on October 25. The Pre-ACT is considered a 10th grade level ACT test that acts as another opportunity to experience a timed standardized test. It is the second test in the ACT series and points out academic strengths and areas of growth. It also allows students, families and deans the opportunity to see if the students are currently on track to be college ready. Furthermore, there is a career explorer that will give career and field of major study ideas as the students begin to research their post-secondary options. The Pre-ACT is comprised of four timed tests: Reading, Math, English and Science. The test will be given to all 10th graders during the school day at Mounds View.

This fall juniors should be investigating colleges of interest. Naviance can be a great tool to run college searches, as well as to gather information on admission rates, costs, majors, and activities colleges offer. College visits should take place during the school year and we suggest getting on campuses when school is in session to gain a better feel for what the college is like while students are there. M.E.A. is often a good time for students to begin making college visits without missing school. MVHS also has college admission representatives visiting our school throughout the year. A complete list of colleges visiting and sign-ups are located on Naviance.

Rotary Youth Exchange Program Rotary International has started a new Youth Exchange program and our local Arden-Hills/ Shoreview Rotary is interested in potentially faciltating the exchange of one or two students during the summer of 2017. Use http://northstaryouthexchange.com/students/summer-program/, if your student is a current sophomore or junior and this is of interest to you/them. Contact Dr. Ridlehoover at 651-621-7103 or at jeff.ridlehoover@moundsviewschools.org for information. Please note that interviews for this opportunity will take place in November, so expressing interest soon could prove beneficial.

Start Times - Share Your Thoughts This fall, the School Board is reviewing the start times of all schools. To allow all families time to adjust schedules, a decision will be made before February 2017. Implementation of any alterations would occur in fall 2017. Parents, staff and high school students have been invited via e-mail to participate in sharing their thoughts about start times online. Parents can also visit www.moundsviewschools.org/starttimes to access the link or to follow progress on this issue throughout the fall.

Closed Campus As a reminder to all students and families, Mounds View High School is a closed campus. While some students do have open periods built into their schedules, for the safety and security of all, students are not permitted to leave campus without parent or guardian permission. If your student has an open hour, remind them that there are designated spaces throughout Mounds View High School (Information & Learning Center, Paddock, Music Suite, Cafeteria, or any classroom) for them to work and/or collaborate, but they may not exit the building without parents/guardians notifying school personnel in advance.

Student Council Student Council has been hard at work this month preparing for one of the biggest weeks of the school year -Homecoming Week. The week includes a different theme for every day, such as 'Merica Monday and TikiTuesday to name a few. Not only is there plenty of spirit during school through students and staff dressing up, but Student Council also plans several events after school to kick-off the festivities. These lead up to the most anticipated day of the week: Friday of the Homecoming Football game. On this day, Council sets up a Pep Fest with student talent, Homecoming royalty and LOTS of cheering. Later that night is the Homecoming tailgate filled with carnival games, face painting and food trucks to get the Mounds View community pumped for the football game. Fans fill the stands in Mounds View's signature green, white and black and root for the home team to take home the win. The weeks festivities are capped off with the Masquerade Ball Homecoming Dance led by Junior Class Officers Hallie Diekoff, Jocelyn Landwehr, and Paige Leiser.
