It has been a wonderful start to our school year. Staff and students are settling into their routines and a positive vibe is noticeable within the halls of Mounds View High School. Homecoming Week was also a huge success as our students and staff enjoyed a theme-filled week that concluded with a very well attended semi-formal dance.

I have also had the wonderful opportunity to visit with each of the four grade level classes where we discussed the importance of school/life balance, respect for one another, and the legacy they wish to leave as proud graduates of Mounds View High School. As we progress through the month of October, I would like to invite and welcome each of you to attend events that involve our students and I would also encourage you to stay connected with our faculty as the school-to-home partnership is a significant key to every student’s academic and socio-emotional success.

Get to Know ‘Em Meet Rebecca Allard Ms. Allard is new to Mounds View High School and ecstatic to work with the Mustang community and business and marketing education department. Becky spent the past 10 years teaching business and marketing education at St. Francis High School as a teacher, coach, and advisor. Becky is excited to be teaching sports, entertainment, and hospitality marketing as well as introduction and advanced marketing classes. Becky is also excited to work with students in the DECA club and Mustang locker room store. In her free time, Becky likes to visit her family in Chicago, travel, camp, hike, and be outside. She also enjoys playing ultimate frisbee.
Meet Jessica Durand
Jessica Durand is a member of the Math Department at Mounds View High School. Jessica grew up in Shoreview and attended Island Lake, Chippewa, and Mounds View. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, Morris, she returned to her alma mater and began teaching at Mounds View High School in 2000. Jessica is currently teaching Advanced Algebra and the 9th grade Accelerated Geometry/Advanced Algebra courses. “The best part of my day is interacting with students and helping them find success in math.” Jessica and her family live in Arden Hills and are often spotted in the community and at events. Her husband, Todd, is the Principal at Island Lake. They have two future Mustangs, Maren (10), and Rachel (8). When away from school, Jessica and her family love to spend time outside, traveling, and at the family cabin in Hayward, Wisconsin.
Meet Jacob Hairrell My name is Jacob Hairrell and I teach physics and physical science. I have been teaching physics, physical science, and astronomy for the past 11 years in multiple settings. I graduated with a B.S. in physics (astronomy minor) from the University of Minnesota and thereafter immediately enrolled in the University’s post-baccalaureate program to earn a teaching license and subsequent M. Ed. in science education. Throughout my years at the U of MN, I participated in a plethora of research opportunities within the physics and astronomy department, focusing mainly on the subjects of observational cosmology and condensed matter physics. When not teaching or attempting to hash out the underlying workings of the universe with my “Nerd Club” I enjoy spending as much time outdoors as possible. At the top of my favorite activities list are spending a day at a park with my wife and two young sons, going out for a long jog, reading epic sci-fi novels, eating any type of culturally inspired food, listening to progressive metal, and spending a night observing the cosmos with my telescopes. I am an active member of the Minnesota Astronomical Society and volunteer at local observatories to give tours of the night sky and assist people to become familiar with our universe.
Meet Cindy McCallum
Cindy McCallum is starting her second year as the Assistant to the Activities Director, Bob Madison. She is passionate about the students, the community and connecting with students through Activities. Cindy, and her husband Jeff, graduated from Irondale High School (back in the day) and have worked side by side in their homebuilding/remodeling business for over 30 years. They have four children, Derek (27) who is married to a wonderful gal named Jenna, Lauren (26), twins, Connor and Corrine (22) and also a little King Charles spaniel named Maddie! The kids have kept their parents busy by all being involved in a number of sports and activities over the years and have now all graduated from college. Cindy enjoys walking, the outdoors, reading and just spending time with her family.

Freshmen family meetings have begun. This is a great opportunity to learn about resources Mounds View High School has to offer, develop a four year academic plan and get to know the Dean your family will be partnering with over the next four years. If you haven’t already signed up, a link to the sign-up page can be found on the MVHS website.
10th Grade
Sophomore students will be taking the PLAN Test at the end of October. The PLAN Test is considered a 10th grade level ACT test. It points out academic strengths and areas where improvement is needed and lets students know if they are on track for college. It helps students find careers that match their interests and even helps connect them with colleges interested in them. Similar to the ACT, the PLAN Test is comprised of four timed tests – Reading, Math, English and Science. The test will be given to all 10th grade students during the school day at Mounds View.
This fall juniors should be investigating colleges of interest. Naviance can be a great tool to run college searches, as well as to gather information on admission rates, costs, majors and activities colleges offer. College visits should be happening during this school year as well. MEA is often a good time for students to make college visits without missing school. MVHS also has college admission representatives visit our school. A complete list of colleges visiting and sign-ups are located on Naviance.

According to a recent study from Harvard’s School of Public Health, more than half of US children and adolescents are not drinking enough fluids throughout the day. Even mild dehydration can have a noticeable impact such as diminished mood, low energy, and difficulty concentrating and learning new material. The good news? Just plain water is the drink of choice recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Our public health message of the month: Consider picking up a fun water bottle to help establish this healthy habit - and offer gentle reminders to use it!

College Corner College Knowledge Month and College Application Day Application season is upon us. Most colleges begin accepting applications in early August and notify students at various times. The Minnesota Department of Education has declared October “College Knowledge Month (CKM)”. The purpose of CKM is to provide students with information about colleges and assist them with the college application process. Minnesota National College Fair The National Association of College Admissions Counseling conducts the Minnesota National College Fair at the Minneapolis Convention Center annually. The University of Minnesota is the top university that Mounds View District students attend with 98 students from the Class of 2015 enrolling this fall. Admission here has become increasingly more competitive, and students are encouraged to apply early. The priority deadline for the Twin Cities campus is December 15. Students wishing to apply to any other University of Minnesota campus (Crookston, Duluth, Morris, Rochester) can do so after completing the Twin Cities’ campus application at no additional charge using the “Share My App” option. Simply contact the admissions office at the Twin Cities campus asking them to share all your information with any of the other campuses thus saving you the application fee at any of the other campuses. If you have already paid fees to another campus, you can request the Twin Cities campus to refund those fees.

Around MVHS 9th Grade Respect Retreat The Respect Retreat was an opportunity for students to experience what school would be like if everyone is respected, and challenged them to respect themselves and others. Youth Frontiers and MVHS Mustang Mentors lead small groups where they discussed concepts of respect and bonded throughout the retreat day.
Key Learning Objectives 1. Help students understand that they matter and so do those around them. 2. Understand that disrespectful behavior is harmful. 3. Identify ways to respect themselves or others more.
