From the Principal…. Dear Mounds View Families, It has been a little over a week since our students and staff returned from a well-deserved break and it appears that we are all settling back into our normal school routines. As we progress through January, there are some key dates and important items to note. Semester one finals will take place on January 26 and 27. Finals for hours 1-3 will be administered on Tuesday and finals for hours 4-6 will take place on Wednesday. Buses will run as usual on both of these days. At the conclusion of the semester one final examinations, students will not have school on January 28 and 29. Winter activities are also progressing well, with several events occurring within the coming weeks. Besides our normal schedule of athletic events, we are also hosting the Winterfest dance competition on January 23 and our student-led production of Shakespeare that runs from January 14-16. If you have time in your busy schedules, the students would love to see you at these or other school-sponsored events. Get to Know ‘Em Meet Terri Bergstrom I am the Records Clerk here. My duties include sending out transcripts for current and former Mustangs. I started here last March and am thrilled to be back in a school setting. I spent 13 years working at Minnehaha Academy in South Minneapolis. My husband Dan is retiring from Minnehaha at the end of this school year. I have two boys, Isaac and Keenan. Isaac graduated from St. Thomas three years ago and Keenan will graduate from Bethel this spring. Both are avid fishermen and Isaac also enjoys hunting. We live on the Mississippi River in Elk River so the boys have had the opportunity to grow up fishing and hunting on the River. In my spare time I love to quilt, cook, ride my bike and be with family.
Meet Julie Coopet
My name is Julie Coopet. I am the Family & Consumer Science teacher (and department!) at Mounds View High School. I have been teaching Foods, Foods of the World, Foods for Life, Child Psychology & Development and Housing & Interior Design for the past 14 years. I graduated from St. Catherine University with my BA in Home Economics Education and I earned my Masters in Interdisciplinary Education from Santa Clara University in Santa Clara. While in California I worked at Stanford University in the Housing Department – I was there during the 1989 Big Quake that stopped the World Series. I am also the Head Girls Gymnastics Coach at MV. My claim to fame is that I participated in the 1st State Girls Gymnastics meet in Minnesota in 1975, representing Region II. I I decided 3 years ago to become a Girls Gymnastics Judge. So the Winter Season is very busy for me coaching and judging. My new adventure is to become a Master Gardener. I am starting the program this winter through the University of Minnesota. You can find me weeding the school grounds throughout the summer and I plant flowers in the planter in the courtyard. I really enjoy teaching and chaperoning football games & dances at MV and being a volunteer Tutor at the Berean Church Innercity Tutoring Program in St. Paul.
Meet Lynn Gay
My name is Lynn Gay, and I teach Math (Introduction to Statistics and Pre-Calculus first semester and Geometry and Pre-Calculus second semester). This is my third year of teaching, and it is my first year at Mounds View High School. I received my undergraduate degree from Michigan Technological University and spent the first ten years of my career as a Mechanical Engineer. At that point, I decided that my passion is really in the classroom, so I enrolled at Hamline University in a Master of Arts in Teaching program in an effort to follow this passion. I worked at two other schools in my first two years of teaching, but I am hoping to make Mounds View High School my permanent home! When I’m not teaching, I spend my time with my husband, Zack, and our Airedale Terrier, Penny (the furry one). Zack and I both grew up in Michigan, so we spend most of our vacation time travelling back to visit family. The exciting news in our family is that we are expecting our first baby, a little girl, in early April this year! We have had a lot of fun working on the nursery, while also attempting to get as much sleep as possible in our last few months prior to parenthood. I also am an avid reader, at least during summer time and vacations, and I love to be outside in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Additionally I love watching sports, specifically college football and basketball, and professional football, hockey, and baseball, and I cheer for all of the Detroit Teams! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Mounds View High School so far, and I look forward to many more years working with great students, families, and colleagues! Go Mustangs!

Winterfest
Join the Mounds View Viewettes as they host the 10th annual Winterfest Invitational and JV Championships on January 23rd at Mounds View High School. Doors open for spectators at 8:30 am and the competition starts at 9:00 am with AAA performances from approximately 9:00 am - 1:30 pm and A/AA teams performing from 2:30 - 5:00 pm. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors.

The registration window for next school year will be open from February 5-15. There will be pre-registration meetings by grade level on February 4 during the last half of 1st, 2nd and 3rd hours.

Health Office Concussion Recovery: Navigating the Waters It’s no secret that concussions have become an increasing source of concern among health care providers, parents, coaches and trainers, school staff, and the media. And for good reason. When it comes to brain health, we can’t take things lightly. A concussion is an injury to the brain that results from a direct blow to the head or a sudden jarring of the body resulting in injury to the brain as it moves within the skull. Concussions are not uncommon and, much like any other injured body part, it takes time and some rest for the brain to heal. If you think your student may have experienced a concussion, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider. There are many excellent resources available to help with recognition of concussion signs and symptoms. Here are a couple examples from reliable sources: CDC: Heads Up - A Fact Sheet For Parents Concussion Information from the American Academy of Pediatrics (heatlhychildren.org) For student athletes, medical clearance is necessary for return to physical activity following a concussion and our athletic trainers will help guide that process. For any student, accommodations may be necessary at school to formulate a plan for managing class work while allowing time for recovery. What we know for sure is that we tend to see more recovery success with careful and early planning and communication. Should your student experience a concussion, his or her Dean and Mounds View’s Health Office staff are more than happy to help answer questions and work with you on return to school planning.
Music at Mounds View Series January 17 – Okee Dokee Brothers Grammy Award and three time Parent’s Choice Award winners, the Okee Dokee Brothers record and perform family music with a goal to inspire children and their parents to get outside and get creative. February 20 – The Singers The Singers, a professional choir of 40 members, exists to serve as artists, educators, and ambassadors of the choral art. Recognized nationally for their innovative programming, commitment to new music, and peerless artistic quality, The Singers made their debut at the renowned Ravinia Festival in June 2013. April 17 – Loring String Quartet With players from the US and Ireland, the Loring String Quartet is an international ensemble of the highest quality, serving the musical needs of the greater Twin Cities area.
