From the Principal…. Dear Mounds View Families, It seems as if we just returned from winter break and yet here we are starting the second semester. Finals week went very smoothly and students and staff already appear to have settled into their semester two routines. As we progress through the remainder of this month, there are some key items to keep in mind. On-line course registration for the 2016-17 school year will remain open until February 15. If your student(s) have any questions about course offerings or individual pathways, please feel welcome to schedule an appointment with their dean. We also have our semester two Open House on Thursday, February 11. During Open House, families will be able to follow their student’s schedules and visit with teachers in a large group/classroom setting. Also on February 11, immediately following the Open House, we will host our first Communication Night of second semester. This time can be used to visit individually with teachers and gain insight and clarification regarding any specific questions. Finally, I would like to remind families that February 22-27 is our annual Winter Week celebration. The MVHS student council has planned theme days, a pep fest, and a culminating all-school dance. Please encourage your student(s) to participate in this exciting, fun-filled week. Thank you again for all you do for the students and staff here at MVHS. Get to Know ‘Em Meet Pam Bazzachini I am Pam Bazzachini and I came to Mounds View in August from Wayzata High School. I am excited to be here and am having fun getting to know students and staff. As a Testing Coordinator, I have quickly learned to differentiate the many acronyms associated with all testing, such as ACT, AP, MAP, MCA, CLEP, NOCTI and PSAT. If your student will be taking a test at MVHS, I will meet them! I also help students through the steps of acquiring a parking permit, which may be just as grueling as taking a test My husband is the hockey coach at St. Olaf College and I have three daughters and a handsome son-in-law. My daughter and son-in-law live outside of Washington, DC (my most frequent travel destination). Our middle daughter just graduated from Olaf with a teaching degree and our youngest is a senior in their nursing program. We also have a very sweet 14 ½ year old golden retriever. Because of her age, very little is required of her and she pretty much spends her days sleeping, watching TV and waiting for someone to come home. I am looking forward to the remainder of this school year and learning so much more about Mounds View. It is such a warm and welcoming atmosphere and I am enjoying this new opportunity.
Meet Ingrid Koenig
Bonjour! My name is Ingrid Koenig, and I teach French at Mounds View. This is my fourth year total working at MVHS. I graduated from St. Olaf College with degrees in French and Education. I am currently working on my Master of Arts in ESL (English as a Second Language) at Hamline University. I have been to France many times, the highlights being a J-Term in Paris and a semester abroad in Rennes (Northwestern France). I am very excited to be taking a group of students to France this summer and to show them the places I know and love! Outside of school, I enjoying running, reading and watching football. I also love spending time with my husband Adam and our two dogs Henry and Toby. We live in Minneapolis and spend a lot of time exploring our neighborhood and working on our house. I am trying to teach my husband French, but have not succeeded yet!
Meet Aaron Oseland My name is Aaron Oseland and I teach social studies (Human Geography, AP Human Geography, and AP Macroeconomics). This is my first year teaching here at Mounds View, 4th year overall, and I’m overjoyed about being here! Before coming here I spent a half a year in Fairmont in southern Minnesota, and the previous two in the North St. Paul - Maplewood - Oakdale district at Maplewood Middle School and Tartan High School. I received my BA from St. Olaf College, double majoring in Social Studies Education and American Studies. I am very happy to be teaching here at Mounds View High School and am loving it here so far. While I grew up in Stillwater and spent my formative years cheering for the Ponies I now feel that I am (mostly) converted. When I am not here at school, you can find me reading, drawing, and getting outside. I especially like getting out in the winter and enjoying all that cold weather has to offer. During the summer I also work as an usher at Target Field, being able to enjoy another of my passions which is baseball. If you ever run into me at a game, don’t be afraid to say hi! When the Twins aren’t in town I enjoy travelling--whether it is around the US, or internationally. Lately I have been visiting places in the world where my ancestors emigrated from, and getting in touch with my cultural heritage which has been very fulfilling!

On January 9, the boys basketball team traveled to the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf to play in one of the most memorable games of the season. At the half, the game was tied 31-31. The Mustangs ended up winning but they played a very good and competitive team. Congrats to both teams!

On January 11, Nordic Skier, Jack Christianson took 2nd place in the Nordic Skate Race at Giants Ridge. Also, Mark Ousdigian took 15th place in the Classic Race. There were over 1000 high school racers at the Mesabi Invite. Then on January 26, Jack took 1st place and Mark took 3rd place in their conference race! Good job guys!!

Health Office News New Year - Time to Reflect and Refresh The start of a new semester provides the perfect opportunity to reflect, refresh, and revisit routines. It’s a great time to establish (or re-establish) good habits as a new semester schedule gets underway! It’s no secret that healthy students are better learners and that brain health is impacted by the little choices we make each day. How is your student doing with some of the basics? This may be a good time to take stock and encourage your student to think about good self care: • Eating regular, balanced meals: And resist the urge to skip breakfast - if those mornings are rushed, a breakfast on the go is a great option. • Exercise: Yes, even in the winter! Whether it’s an organized activity or simply going for a walk or dancing in the living room, moving those bodies provides a boost for physical and emotional health and helps relieve stress. • Getting enough rest: We all need quality sleep to maintain healthy immune function and help illness, but sleep is also a time when the brain is doing important work, storing and processing memories and pruning what’s no longer needed or helpful. • Need some help? Ask early! We all need help from time to time and sometimes teens are hesitant to show weakness. Looking for help before a small problem becomes a big one is an excellent way to prevent unnecessarily stressful situations. • Have fun! Staying socially connected and having time to unwind is necessary for healthy minds and bodies, too! Even when that inevitable stress comes with testing time or that huge project is due, it’s important to schedule some time for fun!

Minnesota Student Survey (MSS)
This survey is given every three years to young people regarding a variety of risk and protective factors. Students in grades 9 and11 will be taking the survey the week of February 22. Ninth graders will take the survey during English class; eleventh graders will take the survey during Science class. More information regarding this survey was mailed home last week.

Senior Mid-Year Reports
Some colleges require mid-year reports from seniors. If your college does require a mid-year report, see Terri Bergstrom in the Paddock.
College Admissions Decisions Many colleges have begun sending admissions decisions to current high school seniors. While some schools admit on a rolling basis, many colleges and universities do not admit students until the end of March/beginning of April. According to state and national admissions ethics standards, students have until May 1 to make a decision. According to the standards established by college admissions counselors, students should not receive pressure to inform colleges until this date unless they have applied using a binding admissions practice known as Early Decision.
University of Minnesota The University of Minnesota has had record applicants this year and has been sending admissions decisions on a rolling basis. All decisions should be made by the end of February. Due to the large number of qualified applicants some students will be placed on a waiting list.

College Corner (cont.) Junior College Planning Juniors should begin their post-secondary planning and should be researching colleges of interest. Ideally, a long list of possible colleges should be developed this spring and honed over the summer to narrow it to a student’s final list of schools. It is important that students’ lists include a variety of schools based on selectivity. In order to determine appropriate schools for each student, it is important to realize where a student stands academically and to know grade point average, test scores, rigor of curriculum, and extra-curricular involvement. In addition to the factors named above, it is important for juniors to begin thinking about college recommendations. Many colleges require a school recommendation which most often comes from the Dean and a teacher. Finally, get on campus! It is crucial that students spend some time on college campuses in order to make sure a school is the right fit. Spring Break is a great time to visit schools.

Re-F.L.E.C.T Staff and students have been collaborating in an effort to implement a new and innovative educational model. This model, which we are calling Re-F.L.E.C.T., will enable students to gain access to teachers and educational materials during the school day in a manner that we believe will be useful to all learners. The Re-F.L.E.C.T. schedule is outlined below, but the premise is that we will infuse a 50 minute intervention and enrichment period into our school day, roughly ten times per semester. During this time, students will be able to complete assignments, visit with teachers, take/re-take assessments, make-up laboratory work, and/or experiment with technologies and other initiatives around MVHS. This exciting new educational programming model will go into effect starting with the 2016-17 academic year, but we will be performing a couple of “trial runs” this semester so that we are able to monitor and adjust before full implementation in September 2016. These “trial runs” will occur on March 2 and 9. We look forward to offering our students this educational experience.

Black History Month Each year, Black History Month is observed in February. Black History Month, also known as African-American History Month in America, is an annual observance in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This observance celebrates African-Americans’ achievements and contributions to the country and remembers important people and events in the history of the Africani diaspora. The African diaspora refers to the communities throughout the world that are descended from the historic movement of peoples from Africa, predominantly to the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, among other areas around the globe. The expansion of Black History Week to Black History Month was first proposed by the leaders of the Black United Students at Kent State University in February 1969. The first celebration of the Black History Month took place at Kent State one year later, in February 1970. “We recognize these champions of justice and the sacrifices they made to bring us to this point, we honor the contributions of African-Americans since our country’s beginning, and we recommit to reaching for a day when no person is judged by anything but the content of their character.” Quote from President Obama Mounds View’s Diversity Council is hosting a sweepstakes for students during Black History Month! Information & Learning Center Word of the usefulness and popularity of the new Mounds View High School Information & Learning Center (ILC) has been spreading. Recently, principal, Dr. Ridlehoover and associate principal, Mr. Schwartz accepted an invitation to present at the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) Winter Conference. Principals and other educational leaders from throughout the state were able to hear about the innovative and creative work being done by our students and staff and several of these leaders plan to visit MVHS to tour and learn more about the flexible learning space that has become the “hub” of student activity. Seth Rosin (Class of 2007) The PREP program at Mounds View High School has received the support of Seth Rosin for the last 2 years. Seth is working in Major League Baseball as a pitcher and volunteers his free time (12+ hours each week) during the off season. Seth works individually supporting students in academics, as well as providing friendship and social supports. Students thoroughly enjoy Seth’s presence while he is here, and track his progress in the world of baseball when he is not. He has opened up the doors of our classroom, including us on his travels through pictures, emails, and text updates. Through his actions on the field, in the community, and in our classroom, Seth is doing Mounds View proud!

Mounds View High School’s Business Management class hosted a fundraiser at North Oaks Country Club in January. Through the generosity of many community members and local businesses, the class raised over $3,800 net which will be given to Children’s Cancer Research Fund. They chose to support children’s cancer research because it is relevant and underfunded. The evening included a gourmet meal, silent auction, giveaways, and selected local vendors (Mary Kay, Norwex, Tastefully Simple, and Thirty¬One). The keynote speaker was Danielle Enberg. She is a childhood cancer survivor who has been cancer free for 23 years. She is now a spokesperson for Children’s Cancer Research Fund.
