MVHS - HOME OF THE MUSTANGS!

From the Principal‌. Hello Mustang Families, Second semester is now well underway and we are moving toward spring and the conclusion to what has been a terrific school year. Upcoming events include: our annual Cultural Festival on March 10, the Physics/STEAM Career Fair on March 13, and Spring Break, which is March 16-24. Some of our winter activities will compete in section and state competitions as they complete their seasons. If you are able to attend any of these events, our students would greatly appreciate your support. On a separate note, I am sure most of you have heard that I have accepted the position of Assistant Superintendent of Instruction. I am incredibly excited to be moving into this role, but I will also be sad to be leaving my post as Mounds View High School principal. The outstanding staff, your amazing children, and the support from families like yours has made this job the most rewarding professional experience of my career. I thank you for this support and plan to be present and visible at Mounds View events for many years. As I move into my new role, Mounds View High School will continue to thrive with Ms. Stephanie Bruggers assuming the role of principal. Many of you already know Stephanie as current associate principal and understand she is a dynamic instructional leader, with excellent communication skills and a desire to see each and every student succeed to their fullest potential. I know that you will warmly welcome Stephanie into her new role with the continued support you have so kindly extended to me.

Respectfully Submitted,

Grade 11-ACT Test Grade 12-NO SCHOOL

Get to Know ‘Em Meet Ellen Chirhart ¡Hola! I’m Ellen Chirhart and this is my first year teaching at Mounds View and at Irondale. I teach Spanish I and II and I love the energy of our underclassmen. I’m especially excited to be back at Mounds View since I am a graduate myself. I have fond memories of playing on the tennis team with my best friends and spending long afternoons working in the Viewer room as an editor. A few things have changed but MV still feels like home! I graduated from Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA, with my B.A. in Spanish and my teaching licenses in Spanish and ESL. Go Zags!! I spent a semester studying in Granada, Spain, and still dream of delicious tapas and jamón. I love the Twin Cities so much I decided to come back home after graduation. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy live music, reading, spending time with my family and friends, going to the family cabin and enjoying our wonderful lakes. I travel every chance I get. This June, I am looking forward to taking my first trip with students. We are going to Costa Rica for two weeks to practice our Spanish skills, explore the beautiful scenery, and live with a host family!

Meet Amanda Zagaros My name is Amanda Zagaros. I get to teach Academic Skills, and co-teach English 10, at Mounds View High School. I help out with the credit recovery program, Bravo, as well as the Anime Club after school. This is the 5th year I have worked at Mounds View High School and my 10th year in education. I went to the University of Minnesota, as well as St. Cloud State University to gain my teaching degree and licenses. I live in Ramsey with my husband, Matt, and two dogs, Casey and Bachka. We enjoy hiking, backpack camping and kayaking. Bachka and I are certified as a therapy dog team and we enjoy visiting nursing homes, Children’s Hospital, The Cancer Center and more. In my spare time I enjoy reading, playing the piano, yoga, and spending time with loved ones. My favorite thing about working at Mounds View High School is getting to work with and know my students. There are so many incredible young people in this building who are going to do amazing things after leaving high school; I feel honored to have the opportunity to teach at such an amazing place.

In an effort to encourage post-secondary access and success for all students, Mounds View Public Schools continues to send out monthly Scholarship Newsletters. In these Scholarship Newsletters, students and families will find a list and links to local and national scholarships. As you will notice, many of these are sponsored by businesses, organizations, or other entities. Though the sponsorship of scholarships may appear as advertising, many businesses and organizations want to help students and families defray the cost of a post-secondary education. Health Office March is National Nutrition Month!

What better time to take a moment to think about our eating practices than National Nutrition Month? We know that eating right is key to maintaining a healthy body and a healthy mind. It can be easy to let busy schedules get in the way of healthy eating…..and your teens are now making many of their nutritional decisions on their own. It may not always feel like it, but you as parents DO still play a central role and have a significant impact on your teens’ health habits! And eating well doesn’t have to be complicated. General guidelines for a healthy diet include the following: • A variety of fruits and vegetables • Whole grains • Fat-free and low-fat dairy • A variety of proteins (such as lean meats, fish, beans, eggs, nuts, and seeds) • Oils • Limited amounts of sugars, saturated fats, and sodium Easier said than done? It can feel that way sometimes in the hustle and bustle of our busy lives. Here are a few tips that can be helpful in making healthful choices manageable: • Plan ahead! Set aside a little time for meal planning and maybe even some prep each week. Having fruits and vegetables washed and prepared and recipes in mind for the week can help keep us from grabbing convenience foods at the end (or in the middle) of a hectic day. • Involve the whole family. Your teen will likely feel more ownership and buy-in if they’re a part of the process. • Focus on fueling the mind and body. Adolescence can be a time of complicated feelings regarding body image and identity. Sometimes even well-intended emphasis on eating habits may play into body image concerns. Keeping healthy choices available, setting a healthy example, and thinking and talking about our food as fuel can help set the stage for life-long healthy food habits. • Looking for more information? Here are a few resources you may find helpful: • Eatright.org from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: nutrition information, recipes, and more. • Choosemyplate.gov from the USDA: another great source of information, recipes, and tips.

Start Times Start times work continues

As the School Board continues to work towards a start times decision this spring, a transportation consultant asked the District to consider adjusting some parameters. The Board agreed to support flexibility with the following parameters if another option can be created. • Some elementary schools and middle schools might have slightly different start times within their levels. • For efficiency, the entire fleet of different-sized buses might be used more creatively, depending on neighborhood densities or traffic patterns.

This spring, the District will continue to work with the consultant and bring updates to future School Board meetings. Communication and information about start times will continue to be shared with families through e-newsletters, at School board meetings and updated at www.moundsviewschools.org/starttimes.

Parent Tool of the Month: Mistakes Respecting your child’s judgment develops self confidence, which is a key element of self-esteem. Let your child make mistakes. That’s okay. Mistakes are a great opportunity to learn while they are still at home and under your mentorship and support. Your child’s mistake is a sign of effort, learning and growing As parents we tend to want to help our children by telling them what “not to do”. Close your eyes and imagine when you were their age, is that how you learned? Or did you have to learn it yourself? When you made a mistake did parents, friends, teachers or even strangers make you feel uncomfortable, or did they “encourage” you to try again? Think back to when you made mistakes in your life, would you have liked having someone say, “that’s okay, what did you learn from it?” Did it lead you to think of solutions to the problem? When we are made to feel “stupid, shameful, guilty and incapable” we feel discouraged to try again. We automatically respond by either not doing, or continue to try, but begin to build walls and keep others out. See mistakes as opportunities to learn. So when you or your child make a mistake, say to yourself “Yeah, this is an opportunity to learn!” Listen carefully, respond with compassion and ask curiosity questions when appropriate, such as “Tell me more about..., What was that like for you? Who was effected? Will it effect you now, or in the future? What is your plan to fix it? What did you learn from your mistake?” Don’t give advice until advice is being sought out. However, you could say “I would be glad to help you brain storm solutions.” Mistakes are part of growing up, part of being an adult too. It’s okay, what can I do to help?” In this way your child will feel supported by you and encouraged to think of solutions by themselves with your mentorship. A great way to let your children know it is okay to make mistakes is by sharing your own mistakes with the whole family, like at dinner time, take turns sharing. Acknowledging mistakes breaks down perfectionism, which in turn creates a bond of support, increases acceptance, confidence in making decisions, and increases self-esteem.

Student Council Student Council members had a fun and hectic beginning to second semester. Winter Week included a wide variety of events ranging from the Mangeant to the Talent Show. The Mangeant is a satirical male beauty pageant, six senior contestants competed to win a $50 Chipotle gift card. They went through three rounds: an introduction walk, a talent portion and a question and answer session. In the end, Sam Lerdahl (12) took the prize, winning the crowd with his rendition of “Piano Man” and scarily short shorts. Students formed teams of 6 to compete in the Powderbuff volleyball competition. “Sets on the Beach” dominated, winning a Pizza Luce gift card. A total of 11 acts ranging from rock bands to belly dancers performed at the Talent Show. Third place went to Landon Conrath (12) singing “Sunday Candy.” Second went to Emma Hoyhtya (11) who sang “Good Girl” by Carrie Underwood. In first was Fur Blise who danced to a popular song remix, earning them at spot to perform at the Pepfest. The Pepfest saw a surge of student enthusiasm and participation. Between awesome MCs Tim Pease (12) and Joe Murphy (12) and the rock band Lonely Enclave drawing cheering students from the stands, the event left little room for improvement. Student Council provided yet another stellar Pepfest. These events led up to the Silverbelle dance. This dance was a girls-ask-guys semi-formal. Student Council spent weeks creating posters and decorations for the Disney-themed mixer. In total, around 400 students attended, taking polaroids, laughing with friends and, most importantly, making memories. Student Council members attended Sprinter, one of the biggest conventions of the year. At this event, councils within the Capital Division meet to discuss ways to improve Council, make a difference and, at the end of the session, vote on next year’s Capital Division leaders. Members came back with many new ideas they hope to instill in the coming year.
