even years, what a journey it has been! This 7th anniversary October 2017 issue of Motown India is a result of our unrelenting hard work and dedication. Despite the tough competition from the digital media, I personally think that the niche automotive print media has a great future.

At Motown India we have not compromised on good, tidy reporting. We have leveraged

our skills in the digital space and are today number 3 among auto magazines in India when it comes to subscriber count and video views on YouTube. It’s been a pure organic growth for us here. Coming back to the 7th anniversary issue, it’s got a right mix of news and features. Keeping in mind the festive season, vehicle manufacturers are launching new products in the market. CAR NEWS NEW AUDI A5 SPORTBACK, A5 CABRIOLET, S5 SPORTBACK LAUNCHED Audi India has launched the new Audi A5 Sportback, the A5 Cabriolet and the new Audi S5 Sportback. These premium fast cars have been priced at Rs 54,02,000, Rs 67,51,000 and Rs 70,60,000 respectively. The Audi A5 Sportback and the A5 Cabriolet are powered by an Inline 4 cylinder 1968cc diesel engine with VTG turbocharger while the S5 is powered by a 2995cc TFSI quattro tiptronic V6 petrol engine. The cars were launched in Mumbai in the presence of Rahil Ansari, Head, Audi India and Bollywood actor Ileana D’cruz. The quattro all-wheel drive is standard on A5 Cabriolet and S5 Sportback. The Audi A5 range is equipped with the Audi Virtual Cockpit and the Audi Smartphone Interface. (Read First Impression Report on Page 34)

VOLVO CARS DEBUTS NEW XC40 SMALL PREMIUM SUV IN MILAN Volvo Cars has expanded its line-up of SUVs and has launched the XC40, a small premium SUV in Milan, Italy. Alongside the launch of the XC40, Volvo has also reinvented the traditional model of car ownership - ‘Care by Volvo’ a subscription service. First being made available to customers of the XC40, the service from Volvo will ensure owning a car is transparent, easy and hassle free. The launch of the new XC40 SUV also marks Volvo’s third vehicle in the fastest growing segment globally. The XC40 has been built on Volvo’s modular vehicle architecture (CMA) and is the first to come on this platform. The platform will underpin all new cars coming in the 40 Series including their line up of fully electrified vehicles. The CMA platform has been co-developed with Geely (Volvo’s parent company) and will ensure the company is able to attain the necessary economies of scale. The new Volvo XC40 SUV will offer consumers technology in terms of safety, connectivity and infotainment coming down from the 90 and 60 Series of cars. The new Volvo XC40 will be available with a D4 diesel or a T5 petrol four cylinder Drive-E engine options. Volvo may offer a hybrid and a full electric powertrain down the line. The XC40 will also become the first Volvo made available with their new 3-cylinder engine. The production of the XC40 will begin in Volvo’s plant in Ghent, Belgium in November 2017.

THE MERCEDES-BENZ C-CLASS ‘EDITION C’ IS PRICED AT ` 42.54 LAKH ONWARD Mercedes-Benz India enhanced its C-Class portfolio with the addition of the new ‘Edition C’. The ‘Edition C’ hosts new exterior and interior upgrades, enhancing the sportiness of the existing C-Class. The car comes with another paint option–the designo Hyacinth red. The C-Class ‘Edition C’ was launched by Roland Folger, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class ‘Edition C’ is available with C 200, C 220 d and C 250 d Avantgarde variants. The ‘C 200 Avantgarde Edition C’ is priced at Rs. 42.54 lakhs, the ‘C 220 d Avantgarde’ at Rs. 43.54 lakh and ‘C 250 d Avantgarde Edition C’ at Rs 46.87 lakh. All prices are ex -showroom (all India). The car comes with a front apron spoiler lip and rear spoiler painted in black, 5 twin spoke light alloy wheels painted in high-gloss black with a high-sheen finish, ‘Edition C’ exterior badge, Night package – front twin louvres, mirror housings, beltline and side skirts in black and LED logo projector for front doors to welcome owners with Mercedes-Benz logo. The interior cabin comes with open-pore black ash wood trim finish, sports pedal in stainless steel with embossed rubber studs and Garmin Map Pilot SD card navigation system which will be standard across variants of the ‘Edition C’.

CAR NEWS SKODA AUTO INDIA LAUNCHES ALL-NEW KODIAQ FOR `34.49 LAKH Skoda Auto India launched the Skoda Kodiaq SUV at an ex-Showroom (all India) price of Rs 34.49 lakh. With a length of 4.70 m, the seven seat configuration and the largest boot within its class, the Skoda Kodiaq will be available in 4 colours of Lava Blue, Quartz Grey, Moon White and Magic Black. The car was launched in Mumbai in the presence of Skoda Auto Board Member for Finance Klaus-Dieter Schürmann and Ashutosh Dixit , Director, Sales, Service & Marketing, Skoda Auto India. TATA NEXON LAUNCHED FOR `5.85 LAKH Indian auto major Tata Motors has launched their much awaited compact SUV -- Nexon for a starting price of Rs. 5,85,000 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the petrol variant and Rs. 6,85,000 (ex-showroom Delhi) for the diesel version. The Nexon is Tata’s first product in the compact SUV space and will take on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford Ecosport and Renault Duster. The Nexon has been designed on the lines of Tata’s new Impact design philosophy which can be seen on the Tiago, Hexa and Tigor. The Nexon will be launched with two powertrain options - a 1.2L petrol and a 1.5L diesel both will come with a 6-speed manual transmission.

SKODA LAUNCHES OCTAVIA RS 230 FOR `24.62 LAKH A few months after introducing the new Octavia, Czech automobile manufacturer Skoda Auto India has introduced the Octavia RS 230. The Octavia RS 230 is available at an ex-showroom (all India) price of Rs 24,62,542/- This is the fastest and most powerful Skoda produced in India. The new Skoda Octavia RS 230 delivers 227 hp from its 2.0 TSI turbocharged petrol engine. The powerful engine and innovative chassis technology including the XDS+ limited-slip differential offer the ultimate driving experience. The Octavia RS 230 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds; its top speed is limited to 250 kmph making it the fastest series-production model in the history of Skoda in India. DATSUN INDIA LAUNCHES REDI-GO GOLD 1.0L FOR `3.70 LAKH Datsun India has launched a limited edition Datsun redi-Go Gold 1.0L for Rs 3,69,737. The car will be available at all Nissan and Datsun dealerships pan-India. The Datsun redi-Go Gold 1.0L comes with gold inspired decals on the exterior together with gold-themed seats in the interior which infuse an extra dose of style to the car. It is available in three body colours: Grey, Silver and White. Datsun redi-Go Gold 1.0L, comes with a first-in-segment ambient lighting app for mobile phones with which a customer can choose the mood lighting of the passenger cabin to suit his or her taste. The limited edition model is available on the T (O) trim level, with features such as Bluetooth audio system, and a reverse parking sensor, among others.

CAR NEWS MAHINDRA LAUNCHES NEW W9 VARIANT OF XUV500 FOR `15.45 LAKH Mahindra & Mahindra has launched a new W9 variant of XUV500 for Rs 15.45 lakh (ex showroom Delhi). The car comes equipped with hi-end features like electric sunroof with anti-pinch, reverse camera with dynamic assist,18cm (7 inch) touchscreen infotainment system, industry first ecosense technology, android auto, emergency call and dual airbags XUV500 W9 will be available in both manual and automatic transmission. With the launch of W9 – electric sunroof will be available in 2 variants – W9 and W10.

MAHINDRA LAUNCHES NEW TUV 3OO T10 VARIANT FOR `9.66 LAKH Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. launched a new T10 variant of their popular compact SUV TUV 3oo. The T10 variant has been priced at Rs. 9.66 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). The TUV 3oo T10 will offer customers features such as a 7 inch touch screen infotainment system, GPS navigation, faux leather seats and much more. Bookings for the T10 variant are open across dealerships in the country. The new infotainment unit on the T10 variant comes with a capacitive touchscreen unit with video and image playback. It also gets USB connectivity, Bluesense technology and a driver information system. The interiors of this TUV 3oo have been designed by legendary Italian design house Pininfarina. A new Pearl White colour has also been added to the list of colour options. The exterior has been given a dash of chrome on the front grille and fog lamps. The SUV also gets static bending headlamps with carbon black finish. The alloy wheels have been given a glossy metallic grey finish along with roof rails and spare wheel cover.

HYUNDAI INDIA INTRODUCES FACTORY FITTED CNG IN XCENT PRIME Hyundai Motor India has introduced the factoryfitted CNG in Hyundai Xcent Prime model making it the first among commercial segment sedans. Xcent Prime CNG comes in two trims: T & T+ and offer a warranty of 100,000 kms/ 3 years and is specially tuned for CNG compatibility. The factory fitted CNG has many advantages, as the Xcent Prime comes with factory fitted SLF – Speed Limiting Function at no additional cost to end user. Factory fitted CNG will also help ease of registration and financing process besides giving registration tax benefit in select areas. Additionally, the factory-fitted CNG will save time of installation post-delivery making it direct to use.

VOLKSWAGEN ANNOUNCES START OF PRODUCTION OF NEW PASSAT Volkswagen India has announced the start of production for its premium luxury sedan, Passat at its Aurangabad facility in Maharashtra. Volkswagen will launch the New Passat on October 10, 2017, the first sedan based on the MQB platform in India. The Passat will be available with a 2.0L TDI, 177 PS engine mated to a 6-speed DSG automatic gearbox offering a perfect blend of performance, efficiency, luxury and most importantly safety.

CAR NEWS TATA MOTORS INTRODUCES TIGOR XM FOR ` 4.99 LAKH Tata Motors has introduced the Tigor XM variant with nine important features, in time for the festive season. The Tigor XM petrol has been priced competitively at Rs. 4.99 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The Tigor XM comes loaded with features like a class leading infotainment system, manual central locking with key, power windows for front and rear, speed dependent auto door locks, follow me home lamps, LED fuel gauge, full fabric seat upholstery, interior lamps with theatre dimming and full wheel covers. The Tigor XM will be available in petrol and diesel fuel types with manual transmission.

TATA MOTORS LAUNCHES TIAGO WIZZ FOR ` 4.52 LAKH ONWARD To mark the success of Tiago and usher in the festive season, Tata Motors launched the limitededition Tiago Wizz. Featuring a more sporty and dynamic look, this new edition is priced at Rs 4.52 lakh for the petrol version and Rs 5.30 lakh for the diesel version (ex – showroom Delhi), inclusive of the accessory kit. The new features of the Tiago Wizz include a contrast black roof and spoiler, stylish dual-tone wheel cover with red accent, unique berry-red grill highlights, black contrast coloured outside mirrors, dual-tone interiors with piano black finish & sporty red accent, sleek roof rails, new patterned seat fabric and stylish blackout on B pillar. The car comes with two engine options: 1.2L Revotron petrol and 1.05L Revotorq diesel engine with multi drive mode- Eco & City, front & rear power windows, remote central locking with flip key, etc.

TOYOTA ETIOS CROSS X-EDITION FOR ` 6.64 LAKH

TOYOTA LAUNCHES NEW FORTUNER TRD SPORTIVO FOR `31 LAKH Toyota Kirloskar Motor has launched the new Fortuner TRD Sportivo in the Indian market for a starting price of Rs. 31,01,500 (ex-showroom Delhi). The Fortuner TRD Sportivo is a sportier version of Toyota’s mammoth Fortuner SUV. Toyota has planned the launch right before the festive season and will be offering the Fortuner TRD Sportivo in a 4x2 AT (automatic) variant. The Toyota Fortuner TRD Sportivo has been designed and developed by Toyota Racing Development (TRD). The Fortuner will get a sportier front bumper spoiler, rear bumper spoiler, TRD radiator and lower radiator grille cover, R18 TRD Alloy Wheel, TRD inspired exterior accents, TRD Sportivo badge, red stitching on the interiors. The new 2017 Toyota Fortuner TRD Sportivo will be powered by the same 2.8L diesel mill which is found on the Fortuner. The engine has been mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and will be available with sequential and paddle shift. The Fortuner TRD Sportivo will get ECO and Power drive modes, it will also come with Active Traction Control. The SUV will come with features which have been offered on the 4x2 AT variant of the Fortuner.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has launched the limited edition of Etios Cross - X-Edition for the Indian market. The New Etios Cross X Edition comes in two engine option - 1.4L Diesel and 1.2L Petrol. The car

is available in a new Quartz Brown color and the price starts at Rs 6,64,300/- (ex-showroom Delhi). The limited edition Etios Cross X Edition comes with features such as new black accents on front grille & fog lamp bezels, body color cladding, instrument panel with new carbon fiber finish, new 6.8” touch screen audio with reverse camera display, new seat fabric, reverse parking camera and an X edition badge. The vehicle also gets safety features like Dual Front SRS Airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Front Seat Belts with Pre-tensioner and force limiter.

BIKE NEWS DUCATI INDIA LAUNCHES NEW SUPERSPORT `12 LAKH Italian sport bike manufacturer Ducati launched the new SuperSport motorcycle in India for Rs. 12,08,000 (ex-showroom India). The company also launched the SuperSport S which has been priced at Rs. 12,39,000 (ex-showroom India). Powering this sport bike is Ducati’s 937cc Testastretta engine which turns 110hp at 9,000rpm and a max torque of 93Nm at 6,500rpm. This is Ducati’s seventh motorcycle launch in India. Present at the launch was Sergi Canovas, Managing Director, Ducati India. The bike gets an aerodynamic front fairing and a sculpted and muscular fuel tank. Ducati has included an electronics package on the new SuperSport which improves rider safety. The bike comes with Sport, Touring and Urban riding modes. Features like Ride-by-Wire, ABS and DTC (traction control) have been added. Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) has also been added to the bike which includes a Bosch 9MP ABS and Ducati Traction Control. The Ducati SuperSport S comes with fully adjustable Ohlins suspension, Ducati Quick Shift up/down system (race derived technology) and rear seat cover.

ROYAL ENFIELD INTRODUCES DISC BRAKES ON CLASSIC MODELS

TVS LAUNCHES VICTOR PREMIUM EDITION FOR `55,065 TVS Motor Company has launched their popular Victor commuter motorcycle in a new Premium Edition for Rs. 55,065 (ex-showroom Delhi). The Victor Premium Edition gets chrome detailing, a new sticker scheme and a chrome crash guard. TVS has also incorporated a body coloured pillion handle, chrome detailing on the side panels, gold detailing on engine cover case and LED DRLs. The TVS Victor is powered by a 110cc engine producing 9.5 PS of power and 9.4Nm of torque. The engine comes mated to a 4-speed gearbox and returns almost 72kms to a litre. TVS is offering the Victor Premium Edition only in a disc brake variant with black colour and yellow graphics. Other variants of the Victor are available in both disc and drum brake variants with 5 different colour options.

Royal Enfield has launched new Gunmetal Grey colour for the Classic 350 and Stealth Black colour for the Classic 500. Royal Enfield has also added a front and rear disc brake setup on their Classic lineup. Bookings for the new colours began on September 18, 2017. The Classic 350 Gunmetal Grey shall be available for Rs. 1,59,677 (on-road Chennai) and the Classic 500 Stealth Black for Rs. 2,05,213 (on-road Chennai). Introduced nearly a decade ago, the Classic series is an ode to retro British cruisers. Built on the lines of the J2, this post-world war II era bike retains classic British motorcycle styling of the 1950s.

HARLEY SLASHES FAT BOY, HERITAGE SOFTAIL CLASSIC PRICES Harley Davidson India announced a price cut on their Fat Boy and Heritage Softail Classic. Prices for the Fat Boy have now been slashed by nearly Rs. 2 lakh with new prices starting from Rs. 14,99,990. The Heritage Softail Classic is now available for Rs. 15,99,990 after witnessing a price drop of Rs. 2.5 lakh. Both prices are ex-showroom Delhi. According to latest figures Harley is the largest retailer of premium motorcycles in India. The company has claimed the price cut will enable it to reach out to prospective and emerging customers. The price cut will be effective on Year 17 models and is effective from September 1, 2017 till stocks last.

e got our hands on the good looking Renault Captur Platine, top end variant which is the most premium version across Renault cars. Incidentally, the Platine variant is making its global debut in India.

EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The Renault Captur is being termed as India’s first premium SUV with crossover DNA. The Renault Captur has been built on the globally successful B0 (B zero) platform of Renault Nissan Alliance which is the stretched wheelbase platform from which was derived the Dacia Duster. The vehicle is quite chic in its appearance,

with a fashion-inspired dual tone body colour. This vehicle is marginally wider and longer than Duster. In its segment in the country, it is the widest and longest. The vehicle has a length of 4329mm, a width of 1813 mm and a height of 1619mm. The vehicle has a wheelbase of 2673mm. The vehicle comes with a smart set of lamps both in front and rear. There is a sparkle full LED headlamps with unique floating side indicators and C-shaped Sapphire LED DRLs. At the rear are the Ripple Tail Lamps. The vehicle sits on R17 Crystal Cut alloys wheels that accentuate the side profile of the vehicle. A closer look at the bonnet reveals that it is elegantly creased and along with the front

panoramic. At night, one can also indulge in some mood lighting with LED ambient lighting. The moment you open the door at night, a series of puddle lights illuminate the area beneath the door sills. Storage space within the cabin of the Captur is just about okay with space for small bottles on the door panels. The glove box too is quite deep for storing things. The Captur Platine features ultra-premium white and gold interiors and takes the feel of sophistication a notch higher with AC vents engulfed in chrome, along with the stylish bezel with golden finish. bumper and the Satin Finish Front & Rear Skid Plates and thick fenders, the vehicle looks quite stylish. There is a dash of chrome on its front and sides. The vehicle has a very good ground clearance of 210mm (unladen) which meant our drive through some very bumpy tracks was complete without a hitch.

INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES Once you step inside the Captur, you are greeted with a very subtle and elegant interior. However, the dash and the instrument cluster look more than familiar, giving it a not so chic appearance for a

premium vehicle. The vehicle has ErgoDesign leather seats which offer immense comfort. These seats are 6-way adjustable and feature enhanced lumbar support. There are no electronic adjustments here, and all you get are manual adjustments for the seats. I found the driver seat perched a little high, something that could be a problem for drivers who are around 6 feet tall. The arm rest between the driver and the co passenger is fixed and cannot be extended. Nor does the arm rest open up to reveal a storage space. But since the A pillar area has a lot of glass, the view from front is almost wraparound

The car has a user-friendly new generation Integrated Intelligent ULC 3.0 multimedia navigation system which comes with a seven-inch display featuring radio and Bluetooth technology, voice recognition (for iOS), maps along with temperature and time display. The Renault Captur is equipped with an automatic AC with surround illumination and rear cooling vents. The steering wheel is adjustable for rake but not for reach. The boot area has a capacity of 392 litres which can be increased to 1352 Litres when you push down the rear seats. Unfortunately, there is no 60:40 split for the rear seats.

WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The Renault Captur comes with both petrol and diesel powertrains, the ones currently powering the Duster in India. For the petrol option, doing duty is a 16 valves 4 cylinder 1.5L H4K petrol engine mated to a 5 speed manual gear box, producing 104.5 bhp at 5,600 rpm and 142 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The diesel version is powered by the 1.5L K9K diesel engine (common rail injection), mated to 6 speed manual gear box, delivering a maximum power of 108.4 bhp at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 240 Nm at 1,750 rpm. Unfortunately, Renault is not offering an automatic transmission for the Captur. We drove the diesel powered variant. We felt that power delivery of this engine should have been a bit more linear and maybe a little more power could have done justice to this big vehicle.

But we were not complaining at all. Features like Cruise Control, and a Speed Limiter, which restricts speed within limits selected by the driver will be useful to many a driver. The vehicle has 2 lateral ISOFIX fixtures with top-tether in the rear seat for enhanced child safety. People who will be buying the Captur in India, will have the option of personalising the vehicle in several ways. Renault is offering the option of further enhancing both the car’s interior and exterior with 2 innovative themed personalisation packs – Diamond Deck and Urban Connect. That means one can spruce up the vehicles style quotient a lot more at the dealer end itself.

VERDICT To our understanding, the Renault Captur will be giving a strong competition to its own Duster and the Hyundai Creta. The Renault Captur with its extremely good looks and great practical capabilities will definitely appeal to a large number of people who like sophistication and value for their buy.

UV stands for Sport Utility Vehicle, but that is not necessarily the case with the new Skoda Kodiaq which is more stylish than sporty. Essentially a sevenseater, this SUV comes with four wheel drive capability and drive mode options, a first for Skoda in India. We got a go at it on the scenic roads of Kovalam, Kerala. The Kodiaq when launched will be Skoda’s flagship vehicle in India. Here is our 2 cents on the

The fascia is imposing, it has sharp looking headlamps and DRLs with angular fog lamps placed right under them. Accentuating this bold look upfront is the broad butterfly grille with ten vertical slats. Moving over to the side, the Kodiaq has been given a flat shoulder line which has been enhanced to make the SUV look muscular. The belt line and shoulder line run parallel to each other while Skoda has given the roof line a gradual slope toward the rear, this lends the SUV quite a modish touch. The Kodiaq boasts of squared off wheel arches which house massive 18 inch tyres that underscore the side profile. The rear gets angular tail lamps as well and an edgy looking tail gate design. Skoda has also added adequate chrome and ample of plastic cladding to give the Kodiaq butch looks. To look at the Kodiaq may not be brawny but Skoda has ensured it gets the essentials to make it fit the shoe.

INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES Step inside the cabin of this luxurious SUV and you are greeted with a familiar sight. The inside as well draws many of its lines and designs from the present generation of Skodas. The Czech manufacturer has achieved a subtle blend of earthy panels and extravagant materials on the inside of the cabin to give this SUV a warm and wealthy feel. While there are certain elements which have been borrowed from other Skoda

models, the dash has been given a very unique look. A fat block of wood seemingly runs across the dash adding to the earthy feeling inside the cabin. The seating inside is quite comfortable, the front row driver and passenger seats are power adjusted, they also come with 3 position memory storage functions. The second row seating is comfy as well with adequate space and a roomy feeling thanks to large windows. The second row bench gets a 40:20:40 split, the backrest can be dropped and the bench can be slid back and forth to access and make room for the third row. Skoda has not provided a one touch tumble function for the third row access. Seating in the third row is not too great. The bench sits low on the floor and under thigh support takes a hit. But one can make more room in the third row by sliding the second row forward to a maximum of 18cm.

Skoda has also catered to a spacious boot which fits upto 270 litres of boot space, this can further be extended to 630 litres by dropping the third row and even more so to 2005 litres by dropping the second row. Skoda has also packed the Kodiaq with a host of nifty features. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Powering the new Skoda Kodiaq is a work horse. Coming in the form of a 2.0L, 4 cylinder, turbocharged diesel TDI engine, it churns out 150 horses. The Kodiaq is quick to accelerate but you can definitely feel the mammoth weight of this SUV being lugged around. The 2.0L TDI in the Kodiaq also belts out 340Nm of torque on tarmac. The surge of power from the engine is thrilling but the meat on the band lies in the mid range.

The 4 cylinder diesel has been married to a slick 7-speed automatic DSG transmission. The DSG is a smooth player as per repute and does not disappoint no matter the circumstance. Also on offer are drive modes - Sport, Individual, Eco, Normal and Snow. While not much difference can be told in between the drive modes, Sport mode does make many faculties a little more responsive. The suspension setup on the Kodiaq has been tuned to be a little soft. The SUV rides well over bad and broken roads soaking in most bumps and undulations with ease. The braking setup is progressive and the Kodiaq surprisingly handles its weight rather well. I found the steering weighted exceptionally well and the Kodiaq drives quite like a sedan.

The driver also gets a good POV of the road and visibility all around is decent. The rear parking camera, sensors and park assist do help out quite a bit on that front.

VERDICT The Kodiaq is more stylish than sporty! The feature list is top notch and the performance is admirable to say the least. Coming into the SUV category it does check some of the right boxes like seating capacity and space but I doubt the Kodiaq would be put through any off-road action anytime soon. Skoda is offering the Kodiaq in an AWD single option automatic variant which I feel is the smartest decision they could have made.

e got our hands very briefly on the new Audi A5 Sportback and the new Audi S5 Sportback. Though we drove the cars barely for a few kilometres on a turf that was not the right one, we must admit that both the models exude panache and character. The latter, however, blew our mind with its sheer intensity and aggressiveness. The moment I got off at the Jaipur

Airport and saw the Audi A5 Sportback, I was mesmerised by the elegantly designed looks of the five-door family coupe. The new A5 Sportback has a very sporty profile. The singleframe grille looks impressive and gives a bold stance to the front end. The side air intakes have bold edges. The new Audi S5 Sportback that I drove later is basically the sporty version of

the A5 Sportback and the only thing that distinguishes the two is the powertrain, apart from some subtle design elements. As the word “Sportback� goes, the A5 and S5 have a very sporty back, not to say the rest is not. From the flowing bonnet, to the A-pillar, then to the roof extending over the athletic body with its frameless doors, the car has very neat design to boast.

The front and rear side windows are given emphasis by a trim strip in aluminum silver. The stretched luggage compartment lid in aluminum has a smart spoiler edge. The LED headlights with DRLS and fog lamps do justice in front while at the rear are slim, three-dimensionally shaped LED lights. The brake light on the upper edge of the rear window glows along the entire width of the glass frame. The S5 Sportback comes with a beefier engine. The rear too is distinct with the A5 Sportback having two exhaust pipes on the left side while the S5 Sportback comes with four tailpipes (two on either side). Rather than a lot of chrome and aluminium, the S5 Sportback has a lot of matt finish. Both the cars boast of super rich interiors with ample seating space, both in the front and in the rear. A continuous air vent strip and the plunging centre console give the impression of a floating instrument panel. Just a few buttons and dials are sufficient for convenient control. When a finger approaches

one of the rocker switches, the function is shown enlarged on the dark LCD display and selected at the push of a button. The three spoke steering wheel makes the car a lot sporty from inside. Not to miss

is the dashboard with a dull black charcoal kind of wood finish at the bottom. The S5, on the other hand, is a bit more brighter with its brushed aluminium finish. The rear seat back splits 40:20:40. Luggage space is around 480 litres and with the rear seats folded the space increases to 1,300 litres. Audi also offers the option of sensor control for opening and closing the standardfit electrically powered luggage compartment lid on the five-door coupĂŠ. A proximity sensor in the rear bumper responds to a kick movement if the optional convenience key is detected. The new Audi A5 Sportback has a large, easy-to-read analog speedometer and tachometer as

standard. Between them is the display of the driver information system (DIS). While it was a treat to drive the 1,968 cc four-cylinder TDI diesel engine powered new Audi A5 Sportback , it was a lot more fun to step on the S5 Sportback powered by a 3 litre V6 TFSI quattro titronic engine. The difference was obvious. While the former develops 190 hp and a peak torque of 400

Nm, the S5 Sportback develops a whopping 354 hp and a peak torque of 500Nm. Driving the latter on the Dynamic mode was like flying your jet too low on the ground. All in all, the limited experience we had with the two cars left us wanting for more. After all, your tryst with something beautiful does not have to end on your first date. We look forward to a much longer drive where we can get to know the cars a lot better.

espite the fact the government of India has stopped hand holding car makers manufacturing hybrid vehicles Maruti Suzuki has taken a brave step in putting in hybrid technology in the all-new S-Cross.

EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The new S-Cross is a good looker. The front has been radically changed and has been replaced with a brand new design element. The all-new Maruti Suzuki S-Cross looks a lot more elegant and bold than the previous model. The chrome tipped grille with the ten vertical slats gives the car a fine character. Adding to that chic element are the projector LED headlamps, the DRLs and the fog lamps. The machine finished alloy wheels add to the smart character of the car. The rear seems to have been untouched. The roof rails and the skid plates further enhance the macho appeal of the car. Talking of wheels, the car now gets a set of better tyres which are definitely better than the earlier ones. Though the car continues to come with tyres from JK Tyres as an OE fitment, this time, the tyres have got wider and better. The car is now fitted with 215/60 R16 UX Royale brand of tyres from JK Tyres that have been created for enhanced stability and better grip.

INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The interiors of the all-new S-Cross too have been revamped with satin chrome accent finish with a soft touch dashboard. The intuitive touchscreen infotainment system comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. The interior hosts many more features like premium meter cluster- high definition TFT screen, rear parking sensor display, automatic climate control, tilt and telescopic leather steering wheel, among others. The car has a piano black coloured central panel with a premium leather finish arm-rest which can be extended and which also comes with a storage that has a USB slot. The car has steering mounted audio controls and buttons which manage your cruise control that lets you pick cruising speeds over 40kmph. Very strangely, only the driver side comes with anti-pinch window, while the other three windows have no such facility. That’s a bit strange, we feel. The new S-Cross comes with rain sensing auto wipers and internally adjustable ORVMs. There are enough cubby holes inside the vehicle for storing your knick knacks and bottles. The seats look premium and offer adequate comfort both for the lumbar as well as the under thigh

area. The rear seats come with 2-position seat back adjustment. But unfortunately there are no rear AC vents. That could be a tad uncomfortable for those seated at the back. The rear seats, however, come with a 60:40 split which in effect means a flexible storage space in the cargo.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE When it comes to driving, the real change is that the DDiS 200 diesel engine which now comes with smart hybrid technology. The company has done away with the more powerful DDiS 320 1.6 litre diesel engine. A few of the guys out there looking for more power are bound to complain. Features like idle-stop-start, torque assist, brake energy regeneration system and a gearshift indicator, makes the car a lot more energy efficient on the road. With the new set of tyres, the company has definitely tweaked the suspension settings a bit. The car is now more planted on the road

while driving and even at high speeds cornering is a lot better. As for braking at high speeds, the tyres along with the car behaved immaculately well, stopping almost immediately without a whimper. Yes, a bit more power from the engine would have done wonders to the car. Those with a massive dose of spare adrenalin in their bodies will find the new S-Cross lacking the massive surge of power. But then, this is a family car with a lot of elegance and not a true off-roader. So, the majority of people who buy this vehicle will find it having the just the right mix of power and comfort. The company has also made sure that the new S-Cross is already compliant with new safety norms like frontal offset crash, side impact and pedestrian safety. The car also comes with air bags and rear seat ISO-FIX child seat safety mount which come standard in all variants of the new S-Cross.

JK TYRE UX ROYALE TYRES The new set of tyres from JK Tyre & Industries which come as an OE fitment in the all-new S-Cross has changed the driving dynamics of the car. It is definitely better that the earlier ones that came with the older version of the S-Cross. JK Tyre claims that new UX Royale brand of tyres for passenger cars have been created for enhanced stability and better grip even in the most slippery of conditions. This power tyre from the JK Tyre is a 5 rib tyre designed keeping in mind the needs of

VERDICT The all-new S-Cross from Maruti Suzuki is a lot more elegant than the previous model and more environment-friendly. As for the driving part, it continues to offer good road handling and safety with disc brakes on all four wheels. The car has definitely undergone a meaningful transformation.

The company claims that the UX Royale has recorded the fastest and shortest braking against other sample tyres of the same size. The Variable Draft Groove Technology platform used to design the tyre gives it added handling and traction. Motown India tested the tyres at speeds of 140kmph and subjected the all-new S-Cross to some tight cornering and braking. The braking test proved the superior qualities of the tyres. It was very evident that the suspension of the car has been finely tuned to the new tyres, making the car more stable and planted to the roads even at high speeds.

, 2, 1....... the buzzer is off and the hounds hit the dirt. Long and slender these graceful animals are deceivingly quick, reaching a top speed of 70kmph in just 30 meters. Their character is defined by swiftness, agility and keen sight. Powerful and muscular, owners have always been advised to keep them in check with a leash. But why am I talking about a racing hound? Because, I had one of my own, ironically in grey. I was at the Raymond race track in Mumbai to test out the shiny new Skoda Octavia RS. To set the tone of things to come let me just throw in some numbers for you. A top speed of 250kmph, a 0-100kmph time of 6.8 seconds, 226hp from 5500-6200rpm

SPECIFICAT IO N S and 350Nm of torque from as low as 1500rpm to 4500rpm. That is what Skoda has managed to churn out of the 2.0L, 4 pot, turbocharged, petrol TSI motor in the new Octavia RS. With those figures out of the way I can safely tell you that the Octavia RS is menacingly fast. But the Raymond racing track built by Gautam Singhania is not really designed for speed, much rather to drift. It would make an ideal proving ground for the agility and stability of the new Octavia RS. Putting this performance saloon through its paces I floored the accelerator and was off in a jiffy. The engine revs freely and the turbo is tuned with precision. The engine has been mated to a 6-speed automatic DSG gearbox which is accurate in most

The Czech manufacturer has also bolted on their electronically regulated XDS+ limited slip differential as part of the standard equipment. While cornering on the track the XDS+ will gently brake the inner wheels and transmit more torque to the outer wheels. Thus rendering more control in corners. The suspension setup on the Octavia RS leans on the stiffer side. The steering has been weighted well, it gave a very solid and sporty feel. The braking setup on the Octavia RS also features discs in the front and rear. Progressive in nature, these brakes are accurate and sharp, making for a controlled and confidence inspiring ride. While putting the Octavia RS in some tight corners and accelerating

rapidly out of them, I was thoroughly impressed with the control and power it had to offer. But that alone does not define this sedan. Skoda has also been known for their solid build and lavish appeal. The Octavia RS does a fabulous job of seamlessly combining that with a very sporty appearance both in and out. The sedan’s facade sports a bold looking bumper with broad honeycomb air inlets. Skoda’s new headlamp design theme for the Octavia also sits well with the overall sporty theme of the sedan. Skoda has also slapped on the RS badges on the radiator grille and tailgate. The tailgate also features a spoiler. On the inside a black colour scheme dominates and sets a raffish tone. Skoda has installed Alcantara sports seats which are comfortable and

provide decent support. The seats also feature red topstitching along with the vRS logo where in ‘v’ stands for Victory. The overall package of the Octavia RS can be defined as sporty and exquisite. Not only has Skoda packed in the right amount of power and performance, but the Octavia RS also gets just the right amount of features and fitment to create a very comfortable and technology rich driving experience. What was extremely remarkable was the way, the Octavia RS handled its weight and was able to shift its line almost instantly, almost like the race pedigree greyhound. Coming in at a price point of Rs. 24.62 lakh (ex-showroom) the Octavia RS is a sure shot winner in my book with not just the performance to thrill but looks and features to elate you.

he new Renegade Commando Classic and the Renegade Commando Mojave (pronounced Mohaave) are extensions of the existing Renegade family of UM motorcycles. We check out the new bikes from UM Lohia Two Wheelers.

DESIGN AND FEATURES Both the bikes are kind of ready-to-ride cruiser motorcycles that are fitted with a saddle bag, a tank cover which is basically a fuel tank cell phone pad and a large leg guard. The Renegade Commando Mojave is inspired from the Mojave desert, North America’s largest and driest desert. The Mojave has the desert like dull finish matte paint while the Classic has a lot of

chrome around it with the exhaust looking trendy with its high quality micron rich gloss chrome finish. The Renegade Commando Classic comes with high gloss metallic 2 tone paint job and more than 3430 square inches of chrome. Apart from the chrome finish that distinguishes it from the Mojave, the Classic has a polycarbonate windshield and an alloy back rest. While both the bikes have a saddle bag, the one attached to the Classic is a lot classier. The tank mounted zipper pouch is very practical for keeping your mobile phone and your wallet safe. There is a USM mobile charger at the side of the tank mounted speedometer. The seats are comfortable with premium high-density seat covers that are

very good for long distance riding. Both the bikes come fitted with oversized leg guards that add to the safety of the biker. As for the pillion rider, the seat is comfortable with the back rest adding on to the comfort quotient. I wished the digits on the analog speedometer had a bigger font and was clearer. The same goes for the digital information on the dial.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The new Renegade Commando Mojave and Renegade Commando Classic are powered by the 279.5 cc liquid cooled, Single Cylinder, 4 strokes, 4 valves, Spark Ignition engine. The engine produces 24.8 hp @ 8500 rpm and a peak torque of 23Nm @ 7000 rpm.

WHEELZ & ROADZ A riding experience

If one were to compare these new UM motorcycles with the Enfield motorcycles, the former does long distance cruising much better than the latter. It’s got the right ergonomics when it comes to seats and handle bar designs. From the time I rode the Commandos, I was impressed with its ride and handling, the comfort it offered to the rider and its stability while cornering. Moreover, the liquid cooled engine did not show any signs of heating up. The engine is mated to a six-speed transmission with overdrive. The sixspeed synchronized mesh Overdrive has been added for easy cruising. The Renegade Commando Mojave and its sibling Renegade Classic come with an electric start and have an air filter with paper element innovation. These motorcycles have a fuel tank of 18 litres with a kerb weight of 179kg. Both the bikes come with Electronic Fuel Injection. The bikes are 2257mm in length and 780mm in width with a wheelbase 1545mm. There are no changes whatsoever on the engine, suspension or brake front compared to the bikes launched by UM initially. These remain the same. Both the bikes come with long legs, but are a tad slow on the take. The bikes have a very lazy torque delivery. The bike achieves its peak torque and power at around 7000 to 8000 rpm. That is way up the rev band. So someone who wants to take off instantly and cruise the highways will find that disappointing. Unfortunately, the bike does not come with ABS. One has to make do with drum brakes in the rear and disc in front. But once the bike slowly shifts to the higher gears, the speed pick up is remarkable. But what this bike has is a wonderful ground clearance of 200mm and also a very functional telescopic suspension in front and dual shock absorbers at the rear. I deliberately went over the pot holes of Kashipur to find out how these bikes took the battering and I came back quite impressed by the amount of abuse it

was able to handle on the roads. If one were to compare these new UM motorcycles with the Enfield motorcycles, the former does long distance cruising much better than the latter. VERDICT UM Lohia Two Wheelers which is just a year old in India has done a remarkable job with the Renegade family of motorcycles. Maintaining good and consistent quality is something which needs to be strictly followed by the company.

be discouraged, the women were determined. It was the Himalayan Highs Season 3 organised by TVS Motor Company. There were finally 10 women and 2 men chosen to ride the TVS Zest 110 through some of the world’s most treacherous roads, peaking over 18,000 feet.

But when a handful of women decided to undertake a journey by road from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh to Khardung La pass in Ladakh, over 11 days, on a TVS Zest 110 Scooty, it sounded almost unbelievable. It was as though the very idea of a few women riding a tiny looking scooty with tyres no bigger than your dinner plate, was doomed from the word “Go”.

Twelve riders were selected through multiple rounds of evaluation, which included physical test and psychological resilience. The chosen ones were Ashwini Pawar (Mumbai), Anjali Chaudhary (Uttar Pradesh), Aashraya Suresh (Karnataka), Shagufta Khan (Mumbai), Vineeta Lohchab (Delhi), Riya Roy (West Bengal), Baishali Nath (Assam), Devaki P (Telangana), Milam Shah (Uttar Pradesh), Mohit Bhardwaj (Delhi), Andre Camara (Goa) and Anjali Manoharan (Kerala).

As a journalist, I rode along to experience this long ride. Initially I was skeptical sitting atop an 110cc, single cylinder, air cooled TVS Scooty Zest. How is this tiny machine ever going to get up there?

he road journey is easy when you are driving a 4X4 off-road vehicle or riding a motorcycle fitted with large tyres and an engine that pumps out large doses of brute power. They say it’s a journey that men love to undertake, as though to prove to the world that it’s a domain best left for the men to tackle.


Setting off early in the morning, a distance of 123kms had to be covered. The first stop was Manali. While riding up along the river Beas I got my answer: Not only was the Scooty capable but there were ten gritty women alongside me also proving their capabilities. The roads to Manali were good and the ride was comfortable. Since the Zest is an automatic scooter, I did not need to bother about clutching or changing gears.

Several men on their big motorcycles took a toss in the slush while our lot on light and zippy scooters glided our way across. En route to Jispa, we crossed the Keylong village from where one can see the Shigri Glacier. Arriving at Jispa - a small hamlet in the Lahual region, we retired early to acclimatise to the altitude and soak in some sights. I had never ever seen such a blue sky. The air was noticeably thin and nippy; it set the tone for what awaited us.

After a comfortable stay and an early breakfast, the bunch was off to take on what would mark the beginning of a real torture test for both man and machine. The day’s ride saw us crossing the Rohtang Pass at an altitude of 3958 meters and concluded in Jispa after travelling some 138 odd kilometers. As we rode down from Rohtang we were shocked to find bikers, truckers and SUVs all stuck in a gooey mix of ice and mud.

Our journey onward took us through varying terrains with the scenery changing dramatically every 50 to 60 kilometers. From Jispa we moved on toward Sarchu, covering a distance of around 85kms. The route was tricky with stretches of bad roads. Along the way we crossed the village of Darcha and finally onward to Baralacha La (4,890 meters). The view from this pass was simply breathtaking with the snow covered mountains and barren landscape. The ascent was quite evident and my breathing seemed to get labored. I had heard

about the air being thin at such altitudes but this was my first encounter with such a phenomenon. From there we were quick to reach Sarchu our final stop for the day. The journey onward saw us crossing The Gata Loops which is a total of 21 hairpin loops beginning at an altitude of 4667 meters above sea level. The road would eventually take us to the Nakee La pass (4739 meters) from where we moved on towards Pang our rest stop for the night. Over the next few days we rode through different parts of Ladakh, moving off the Leh-Manali highway at Upshi. We went up to Hanle a small village which was established on a branch of the ancient Ladakh-Tibet trade route. If the scarcity of oxygen was not enough to leave one breathless then the view at Hanle simply got the job done. The flats along the way also play home to the Kiang - a breed of Asiatic Wild Ass. From Hanle we made our way to Leh covering a distance of nearly 254 kilometers. Leh sits almost 3,500 meters above sea level. On entering the desert city we were greeted with an open blue sky and cold crisp winds. The scenery at Leh was just as we have always been told and exactly how I imagined it to be. The land was barren, filled with snow, rocks and sand. The freezing howling winds blanketed us. The air in Leh was thin and breathing was tough. To put things into perspective, climbing a flight of stairs can make you see stars and bending down to tie your shoe laces will leave you breathless. After being well rested for a day, we headed up to the Khardung La pass which is at 5,359 meters above sea level and arguably one of the highest mountain


passes in the world. But this ride up to Khardung La was all about busting myths. Many of us live in a patriarchal society where women have always been considered inferior and under qualified for several tasks. Right from the selection process to the ride in Ladakh, these women were faced with one dilemma ‘will we be able to do it?’ This journey had been all about breaking stereotypes, be it the women or machines we were riding. Some of them had come this far only to prove that women are no less, others simply wanted to conquer their own fears. I had the chance of speaking with one such brave soul amongst them. After a bad crash almost ten years back, Aashraya Suresh from

Karnataka had always been afraid of taking corners and bends. This was to the extent that she would dismount and walk her scooty across. But much before this journey ended, she was well on her way to conquering her fear of riding.

fter a brief search on the internet I zeroed down on a resort that went by the name of Mountain Quail Lodge in Pangot, a detour one takes on the way to Nainital. It is nestled in the heart of the Naina Devi Himalayan Bird Conservation Reserve and is situated close to the hamlet of Pangot. The lodge is perched at 6500 feet above mean sea level and overlooks the snow-clad Himalaya moutains. The forest area is home to leopards, bears, deer and over 350 species of birds. A few of us packed the Jeep Compass with our bags and left on a weekend just as the sun was beginning to show its radiant face on the horizon. The odometer showed 3056 kilometres as we started our journey from New Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area. There were four of us in the vehicle with our luggage that included our camera and video equipment. As we took the Barapulla bridge from near the INA market area in New Delhi and proceeded towards Sarai Kale Khan and then a left turn towards the Nizamudin bridge, we noticed that there were quite a few holiday makers headed towards the hills. Looking at the numbers of cars headed out of Delhi, I realised that we were bound to encounter bad traffic as we headed towards the hills. The route we had taken not only leads to Pangot, but tourist destinations like Jim Corbett Park, Nainital and a host of other hill resorts. We took a simple straight route which took us from Delhi to Moradabad - Kasipur - Bajpur Kaladunghi and finally to Pangot. En route we encountered three toll booths at Dasna, Hapur and Joya where tolls reasonable enough varying from Rs 30 to Rs 60. Ideally when one leaves New Delhi at 5.30 in the morning, one tends to reach the Pangot destination by 2 in the afternoon. But since it was a long holiday weekend, motorists from Delhi

and surrounding areas had made a beeline for the hill resorts. Such was the rush towards the hills that at one of the toll booths I heard a toll collector saying loudly with a smile “There is an earthquake in Delhi. People are deserting the city”. The only silver lining to the traffic jams we faced on the way was the immense drive comfort which the 4X4 Jeep Compass offered. Apart from the extremely comfortable seats and the quiet cabin the vehicle had, its engine devoured the distance with considerable ease. I was driving the top end diesel model of the Jeep Compass that is powered by a 2 litre engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Initially I was sceptical about the Electric Brake Park button which had replaced the manual hand brake in the vehicle. Being so used to the manual hand brake, I felt it would have been better off if the company had not put in this electric “P” button. But as I got into the hills beyond Kaladunghi, I realised how wrong I was. As we encountered a massive 3 km jam on the steep roads towards Nainital, I realised that this “P” was my saviour. At each of the stop and go traffic on the steep inclines, it was this “P” button which ensured that my vehicle did not roll back, not even by an inch!! I noticed several vehicles ahead of me with manual hand brakes finding it difficult to cope with such a precarious situation. Finally, when we reached Pangot and the Mountain Quail Lodge that was tucked away on top of a hill, we had to drive another few metres to the parking area. The climb was extremely steep but by deploying the 4X4 feature in the vehicle, the Jeep Compass moved up with considerable ease. We had finally reached our destination at 4.57 pm. We were several hours late, thanks to the unruly drivers and bad traffic habits that are so

MOUNTAIN QUAIL LODGE As we had done our room reservations in advance, our rooms were assigned to us immediately. Later we found out that all the resorts and hotels in Pangot and Nainital were booked more than 100pc. The moment our luggage was taken up to our rooms, we trooped out to look at our resort which was to be our home for the next couple of days. Away from the madding crowds with only seven family rooms to offer, the Mountain Quail Lodge is like a piece of heaven tucked away in the hills. The scenic forests surrounding the resort were like a tonic that could do wonders to your mood. We simply immersed ourselves in the natural beauty that was all around and as we had a late vegetarian lunch, our bellies too were happy and relaxed. As it was getting dark, we walked around the property and noticed how beautiful it was, apart from the serenity it offered. With a handful of tourists the resort could accommodate, it was almost like your private resort with no one out there to disturb you. As we all huddled into one room to sit and gossip, my colleague Aakash took out his guitar to strum a few soothing tunes. I had made up mind to sing and to my surprise he took out a book containing lyrics of Selfie time ! several songs. Now that made my singing so easy. We sang into the night, both Hindi and English songs while my Editor, Roy and the cameraperson Afsar played the perfect audience. The dinner call came by 9.30pm. Dinner in the hills is usually served early as the people here are used to retiring for the day early. At dinner time, they offered us a non-vegetarian dish which was wonderfully cooked, while the other vegetarian dishes too tasted refreshingly good. None of us wanted to sleep. We chatted away late into the night.

The next day was spent taking videos and pictures and walking around the resort. We did not want to go too far because we had a serious job to do with our cameras. Our task was to film both the vehicle and the surroundings, which we did so willingly. The more time we spent out the there, the more we were beginning to fall in love with it. Unlike resorts with several rooms that bring in city people of all kinds of loud and deranged behaviour, the Mountain Quail Lodge with its limited rooms offers the right mix of tranquillity and adventure. The winding roads surrounding the resort take you to scenic spots that overlook mountains, hills, streams and small waterfalls. Though the Mountain Quail Lodge does not offer very modern amenities, it gives you clean rooms with neat linen and hot water. The toilets too are modern and neat. There is a large room for the visitors to relax. It has some books to read in case you are the reading kind and comfortable sofas to relax. In case you are the sporty kind, there is a provision for you to play table tennis. The Mountain Quail lodge is not about loud music or swimming pools. It’s about serenity, it’s about romance and most important, it’s a slice of heaven! You can imagine how difficult it is to leave such a place after barely spending some time there. As we started our journey back to the city that refuses to let go of its ghastly tentacles around us, I closed my eyes to think of the fun I had in such a brief time. I never for once missed the lack of mobile or internet connectivity in the place, nor the hustle and bustle of a city, I simply bathed myself in the bliss that surrounded this hill resort of Pangot. Till the next time, the memories of my stay at the Mountain Quail Lodge will help me take on the mad and insane rush of modern day living. As for the Jeep Compass I drove, I felt that it lorded over every kind of terrain that came its way! As we reached home in New Delhi, the odometer reading stood at 3655 kms.

JEEP COMPASS #Versatile

Launched at the end of July this year, the shock pricing on the new Jeep Compass has rocked the Indian market. Not only does the Compass get a really affordable price tag but has been equipped with the right amount of features and off-road capability. We had the Compass both in the urban jungles of Delhi and the wild outdoors of Goa. The versatility of the Jeep Compass can surely impress you in both driving conditions. Sampling all powertrains, we found the diesel immensely pleasurable to drive. You can rev it hard on highways and be sure the low end torque will pull you out of sticky spots for where the road ends. The interiors are plush, Jeep has managed to strike a fine blend between luxury and technology. The cabin of the Compass is feature

rich. However, the top spec variant which comes fully loaded is a bit pricey. All being said, we found that Jeep had it spot on with the Compass simply because the package was good. The Compass gets a lot of features which are not only standard but some completely first in segment. Jeep has brought a product of global standards to India and given competition a new challenge.

MARUTI SUZUKI DZIRE #Desirable

While the Maruti Suzuki Dzire in its previous iterations may not have been too desirable, the latest generation model launched this year is quite the opposite. Maruti Suzuki has given the mid-sized sedan a very modish and contemporary theme. This goes a long way in the commitment the company has towards its buyers. While there are a few who do not understand the design of the new Dzire, we strongly felt it was bold and unique. With a constant evolution of technology and features in the automotive scenario, it becomes tough to offer a right mix of features

that will appeal to the modern buyer. However, Maruti seems to know exactly what customers want which shows up in their sales volume numbers as well. They have offered consumers a cracker of bargain. While the interiors, cabin space, features and design all are rather good, performance is not the strongest points of the new Dzire. But then again this one is for the city where average speeds are between the 35-40kmph mark.

HYUNDAI VERNA #TrueValue

The previous generation Hyundai Verna was a real looker. Fluidic lines and functional interiors were what defined the sedan. In its present generation the Hyundai Verna has evolved quite a bit. The Korean manufacturer has done away with the fluidic lines and replaced them with clean and neat straights. The change is a welcomed one. The sedan is now more executive than ever before and is definitely all the bang for your buck. Not only does the Verna look more mature and well dressed but Hyundai has also given it ample of kit. The list of features on this

sedan is quite long and to make things even more pleasurable Hyundai has also ironed out issues that crept up on the fourth gen Verna. The engine has been tuned a little better. The sedan feels solid and planted to the road even at high speeds. Comfort and space inside the cabin are great. However, the colour scheme, design and materials inside the cabin are not too exciting. That being said, in this segment there could be not better value for money product.

When it comes to the Volvo S60 Polestar, performance is the name of the game. While Volvo’s are known for their safety and reliability, the Polestar division tuned S60 sedan from Volvo is on a different level. Powered by a 2.0L Supercharged and turbocharged petrol, this monster turns 362bhp on tarmac and belts out 470Nm of torque. Going from 0-100kmph in just 4.7 seconds the S60 Polestar can achieve a top speed of 250kmph.

TATA NEXON #Sensational

Prices for the Nexon were recently revealed. Tata continues its aggressive pricing strategy alongside well endowed packages. The Nexon is an embodiment of cars to come in the future. On all aspects, the Nexon combines the best of space, features, performance and price. The reason why I have not mentioned design is because that is where Tata has got it spot on. While many may disagree with this fact, the Nexon is a gem to look at and Tata giving it a distinct look and style has made a very bold statement. What really impressed us is the immense forethought that has

gone into making the Nexon. From features like a wearable key fob to a dash top mounted capacitive touchscreen setup for an improved and safer user experience. Even umbrella holders in the doors have been incorporated on the Nexon. All of this and a lot more simply goes to show why Tata has it right with the Nexon. The cracker of a deal on the price is what simply steals the show.

HONDA WR-V #Fresh

The Honda WR-V is not an everyday car. It may have been modeled on the Jazz platform but is quite distinct in its looks and proportions. Boasting of SUVish proportions, the WR-V has a brawny outlook and some modish design cues. This design is essentially what gives the WR-V a fresh appeal and can set you apart in a herd of SUV mimicking cars. Other aspects of the WR-V such as cabin space, quality of materials and features are quite good when compared with the industry standards. Both diesel and petrol powertrain options on the WR-V are workhorses doing their job earnestly. The engines may not be exciting but are extremely efficient with superb mileage figures. The WR-V is great for a weekend getaway and practical from a city ownership perspective.

A boon to whoever is behind the wheel in it and a bane to those who are not. The Isuzu mu-X in simply put is extremely intimidating to other motorists. When behind the wheel of this SUV, we truly got the feeling of being kings of the road. It has mammoth like proportions and has deceivingly good off road capability. The interiors of the mu-X are on the simpler side but quite functional and handy. While its contenders are quite expensive, the mu-X has been priced aggressively. The drawback is on the lines of features, of which it stands mildly lacking when compared to the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavor. That being said, we found the Isuzu mu-X more capable off road and a worthy contender in terms of its drivability and overall package. Another factor not to be ignored is how easy and comfortable it is to drive the Isuzu mu-X.

HONDA CRF1000L AFRICA TWIN #Capable

It’s not very often that you get your hands on a motorcycle that comes without a gear shift lever and a clutch. The Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin is a motorcycle essentially built for off-road duties but is also a great touring bike. The bike gets immense capability off road and Honda has included multiple technological aides to make riding simpler. Encapsulating the true freedom of motorcycling, the Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin has a go anywhere attitude and will take on any obstacle you throw its way. The Africa Twin is also quite handsome to look at. It gets a sport

paint scheme with an artistically painted fuel tank. To ride on highways and tarred roads, the Africa Twin is sure footed. It also has the capability of catching a lot of attention with its big on road presence. What is unfortunately a bit of a letdown is also a crucial deciding factor - the price, but then it’s not a bike that will appeal to everybody. The FZ series has been popular amongst enthusiasts ever since it was launched. The FZ25 being the biggest of the lot takes on the likes of many fierce contenders that are well established in the market. The bike also gets adequate stopping power but the addition of ABS could never have gone wrong.

Bajaj has been known to make bold moves, the Dominar is no exception to this fact. It takes on the likes of cruiser motorcycles from Royal Enfield in a segment dominated by the latter. What appealed to us the most was the Dominar’s power cruiser nature. The bike is not just comfortable for touring but can also belt out some thrilling performance on tarmac. Cruiser’s in India are mostly associated with Harleys. But the Bonneville Bobber from Triumph is redefining that entirely. Sporting a custom bob job look this bike is long and low slung. The design is unique and the bike turns heads pretty quickly. If you want to stand out in a crowd, nothing in our list says it better than the Triumph Bonneville Bobber. The parallel twin motor is simply amazing to drive and we felt it was much better to ride when compared to some other contenders out there. What this bike really has going for it is the low end torque and the thrilling burst of power you get as soon as you twist the throttle. Issues which we previously found on the bike majorly relating to build quality have been ironed out and the Renegade Commando Classic provides a rather comfortable and hassle free ride. Aside from its contemporary looks and decent build quality, we found the engine to be a work horse. TVS Racing sets national stunt record with Moto Tycoonz on TVS Apache RTR 200

D

oing stunts on a motorcycle is not a very lucrative job, at least in India. But it’s the passion of the riders that overcomes all kinds of obstacles. Motown India had some time back done a short film on motorcycle stunt riding featuring Bunty Godara and Manninder based in New Delhi. We had interviewed Bunty’s parents and recorded the apprehensions of his family and Bunty’s passion for stunt riding. The video went almost viral with more than 97,000 views to date. Bunty Godara recently participated in TVS Apache Pro Performance X which was organised by TVS Racing in Chennai. It was an event which involved non-stop stunt riding for five hours. Bunty was part of the team which set a record, supervised and verified by India Book of

Records team. Bunty’s team Moto Tycoonz is the official team of TVS Racing, part of leading two-wheeler company TVS Motor Company. It achieved this record while doing their stunts on the TVS Apache RTR 200. “It’s a national record which is happening first time in India, thanks to TVS Racing,” Bunty told Motown India. Bunty said the company plans to take this stunt riding to an international level where he hopes to represent India with his Apache RTR 200. Those from Moto Tycoonz who were part of the stunt riding in Chennai included Bunty Godara, Manninder Singh and Rohittesh Upadhayay. UM motorcycle club ROAR concludes ‘Hi-Land Quest’ to Ladakh ROAR – Rebels On A Renegade, the motorcycle club of UM Lohia Two Wheelers recently concluded its Hi-Land Quest, it’s first ever tour of Ladakh. The 15-day tour started in Delhi covering Manali, Sarchu, Leh, Hunder and finally concluded in Chandigarh covering a total distance of 2300 kms. ROAR has been operational for the last 10 months with 18 chapters across the country. The club has been extremely active on-ground and on social media, conducting weekend rides. The ride initiatives are taken up by dealerships, wherein they organise breakfast and overnight rides for customers twice a month. ROAR has been building a lot of properties for its customers along with undertaking CSR activities involving members and communities around them.

Indian Motorcycle K2K ride concludes in Delhi Indian Motorcycle, concluded the iconic Kanyakumari to Kashmir (K2K) ride and brought (C) Pankaj Dubey, Country Head & MD, Polaris India with the riders the ‘Wheels of Change’ initiative in New Delhi. Three owners of the Indian Roadmaster- Anurag Srivastava, Niladri Saha and Bernard Lazar rode across 12 cities and concluded the iconic K2K Ride at the National Capital where they made their generous contribution by distributing educational kits to 120 underprivileged girl students. The K2K Ride was born out of the three passionate Indian Motorcycle owner’s love for riding and their unwavering commitment to ensure primary and high school education for underprivileged girls. As a part of the K2K ride, the three riders cruised over 12 cities – Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kanyakumari, Kolhapur, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Delhi, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Ranbir Singh Pura.

T

he Indian auto industry once again became the whipping boy for all the environmental degradation and congestion on roads. Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari told a stunned gathering of leaders from the Indian auto industry that he would ensure that petrol and diesel vehicles in India make way for electric powertrains and engines running on bio fuels and that we would “bulldoze” the players...and “petrol diesel banaane walo kaa band baajaa bajaana hai” (I will take to task the makers of petrol and diesel vehicles). Gadkari was speaking at the 57th Annual Convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) in New Delhi. Gadkari’s statement, bordering on rudeness and outright insensitiveness, took the entire auto industry representatives by surprise. It may be recalled that the Indian government wants to ensure that only electric vehicles are made in the country from the year 2030. Instead of elaborating on the ways to achieve this in a more scientific and practical way, Gadkari merely mentioned that he wants the pace of car sales in India to slow down as growth in vehicle sales, especially diesel cars, is choking roads and causing

increased pollution. Not a word was spoken on the poor quality of roads and infrastructure in India, whether intra city or inter-city. Rather the Minister was more interested in gaining some brownie points before a large gathering. “You may not like it, but I wish from my heart that your growth should be less...” he said. If this growth continues, he pointed out that he would need an additional Rs 80,000 crore to build an extra lane to the existing highways. That argument did not make any sense to the elite gathering. Citing one apparently poor example, he said, “Even my chef comes in a car. There are too many cars, which is also leading to parking problems.” He also said his government is planning to come out with an app on the lines of Uber and Ola that would facilitate the use of two wheelers as taxi. “If only one person needs to travel, why should he use a car?” he asked. Well said, Mr Minister. But what about the scores of politicians who travel with dozens of cars in a convoy? The government may have done away with the red beacon light, but the convoy of cars still continue.

To a great extent, given the current mood of the government, given the current way the courts are taking decisions, electric mobility will happen much faster than what you and I can assume. This will be a huge and largely disruptive change in the automotive industry in India. Whether everything will move to electric vehicles by 2030 or 2035 is a big question. It is still dependent on a lot of external policies, infrastructure being created, the cost of batteries, cost of modules, etc. But definitely electric mobility is something which will happen. I am happy to share that at Force Motors our first electric Traveller is already on the road. It is going through evaluation and testing. It will take us a few years to get the product in the right shape and right scope of delivery that we require.”

This is a gap that needs to be bridged not by an individual manufacturer but by the whole eco system wherein we have batteries, charging points, etc. But one fine day, electric vehicles will be a reality. ”

B2B NEWS “The auto industry has to be always prepared for disruptions whether it is in terms of bringing in alternative fuels, including electric vehicles. Yes, the government has an agenda and it has a direction. It wants to reduce the import bill on fuel. Earlier, hybrid vehicles were being promoted. I feel the government did not see the positive results by way of supporting the hybrid vehicles. We too as a company had prepared two vehicles on a hybrid platform that were on the verge of being launched but unfortunately with the benefits going away we have scrapped that now. Now we are moving towards electric vehicles. We have the technology worldwide. We will definitely bring it into India. But yes, there are certain supports that we require. One is the charging infrastructure and I think that is where the government will have to play a lead role. In addition to that, standardisation will have required for the electric vehicles. Just like the way gasoline, diesel and CNG vehicles have certain standards. In addition to that, there are also challenges in terms of ensuring that we are able to make these vehicles in India. Because indigenised production will actually will bring down the cost, as otherwise if we were to import these batteries and components, the price would be so expensive of these cars that the affordability will be challenged and there will be very less ownership.”

When the government says by 2030 it wants to move everything into the EV space, I am not sure everything will move. I think the government’s stance is very clear that will move into that direction, which I think is the right direction for a developing country like India. I think there will be disruptions. But I don’t think there will be complete disruptions, where the Internal Combustion Engine will completely vanish. There has to be a step by step adoption of regulations, of components and of technology. There is a lot that needs to be done on the eco system. Every component manufacturer will have his or her strategy to handle this disruption. ”

I feel the first adaptation will happen in four wheelers and then trickle down to two wheelers. I think this is a very positive step if we are able to establish this industry, especially for a country like India where we do a lot of commuting on two wheelers. But as of now we have a lot to do from where we are today to what we want to become by 2030. As of now it is in the nascent stage. It is very difficult to comment on what kind of investments will go in. But as policies mature and technologies mature we will know what is the kind of investment required.”

Adoption of EVs in India – An Opportunity and a Challenge Vinit Bansal, Managing Director, EV Motors With the pollution in Indian cities approaching dangerous levels and with the oil import bill increasing exponentially, the government has announced that the nation will adopt all electric vehicles by 2030 with the expectation that this initiative will help address the environment issues along with the outflow of foreign exchange. This vision needs to be applauded and over the last two years several government programmes that have been initiated clearly demonstrate intent to make this dream a reality.

100 smart cities, the National Smart Grid Mission which is addressing the electricity load on the grids due to adoption of EVs, the National Solar Mission which requires an energy storage strategy and has synergies with EV adoption and various other programmes are each addressing the issues on e-mobility in their own right. However, even with all these efforts the penetration of electric vehicles in India still remain invisible. This begs the question, why then has the adoption of EVs in India been so slow?

DC FAST CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE When we talk about DC fast charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, different regions have adopted different standards, the Europeans and the Americans are following two different variants of CCS charging standard, the Japanese have adopted the CHAdeMO standard and the Chinese the GB/T standard. These standards define how the charging infrastructure communicate with the electric vehicle. India has not yet defined a comprehensive policy that will allow various OEM’s to introduce their electric vehicles in India. The current policy mandates the industry to adopt a modified

version of GB/T charging standards and limits the ability of several large electric vehicle manufacturers to introduce their products in India.

they have to be charged simultaneously it would require a load of over 10 MW to charge such a large fleet of vehicles.

With regards to the bus segment there is a high likelihood that adoption of electric buses in city application may be faster as they have a fixed route and it may be easier to set up a charging infrastructure for them. Even for bus application there could be three potential charging solution that could be adopted. Most of the OEMs in India are proposing overnight charging and can deliver 250 km range on a single charge. Such charging solution has the following disadvantages: higher cost due to larger battery size, less efficient as the vehicle is carrying more battery weight, higher investment in charging solution as one charger for one vehicle is required, lower asset utilization as the charging station is idle during the 16 hrs. period when the vehicles are in use, private bus operators do not have access to the charging stations as they are installed in bus depots, heavy charging loads on the grid even though they are charging during night time. A bus depot generally parks 100 buses or more and if

The Government of India is leading an initiative working with the industry to establish a battery swapping solution for electric buses. With the use of automation such solutions could quickly replace an existing battery with a charged one providing a quick turnaround time. Battery swapping solution has several technology challenges like handling of large battery weight, durability due to frequent connect and disconnect requirement, safety as electric buses require a high voltage system and with a need for a thermal management system for Indian weather conditions it makes the system more complex as frequent connect and disconnect could lead to system leaks. Lastly, such a system would require one owner of the battery systems preventing private companies to participate and increasing the investment burden on the government. complicated. Another very viable option is the ultra-fast charging solution which could significantly reduce the battery size thereby reducing the battery weight and cost. Because of short charging time of less than 10 minutes a distributed charging infrastructure can be adopted which would significantly reduce the number of charging stations required. Such a system can be operational 24 x 7 thereby increasing asset utilization and also allowing the charging system to be available for both public and private bus operators. Ultra fast charging solutions are operating successfully worldwide and are gaining popularity and the numbers are on the rise. Which of these technologies will actually penetrate only time will tell, however, the government needs to adopt policies that would allow all of these technologies to compete and allow the market forces to dictate which charging option is going to be the winner and widely adopted by the country. Force Motors ties up with Rolls Royce Power Systems

After more than two decades of Mahindra & Mahindra joining hands with Ford to form a joint venture and subsequently ending the JV in 2005, both the automobile companies have come together again to explore a strategic cooperation to drive profitable growth in India and other emerging markets. It was in October 1995 that Mahindra Ford India Limited (MFIL), a 50-50 joint venture between Mahindra & Mahindra Limited and Ford Motor Company was formed. In 2005, the relationship formally ended. Now, the two erstwhile partners have agreed to explore a strategic alliance, designed to leverage the benefits of Ford’s global reach and expertise and Mahindra’s scale in India and successful operating model. The agreement between the two companies will allow each to leverage their mutual strengths during a period of unprecedented transformation in the global automotive industry.

Leading commercial vehicle and engine manufacturer and Abhay and Prasan Firodia controlled Force Motors has entered into a non-binding term sheet with Rolls Royce Power System AG (R-RPS) to form an Indian joint venture company for producing engines for power generation and rail application. Besides, the joint venture will produce complete power generation systems, including associated spare parts for Indian and global markets. The Indian joint venture company will also be building a dedicated facility at the Force Motors existing premises in Chakan, Pune in the state of Maharashtra. Force Motors had in June 2016 inaugurated a new engine and axle assembly plant exclusively for Mercedes-Benz India in Chakan, Pune. The company had invested around Rs 100 crore in the new greenfield facility. The plant has an annual capacity of 20,000 engines and 20,000 front and rear axles. Force Motors also has a dedicated engine and parts assembly plant in Chakan for BMW. Rolls Royce Power Systems portfolio includes high speed engines and propulsion systems for ships, power generation, heavy land, rail and

defense vehicles. Rolls Royce has customers in more than 150 countries. Its customers include 400 airlines, 160 armed forces, 70 navies and more than 4000 power and nuclear customers. Force Motors is also the only company in the world that produces engines for two of the leading European premium car makers Mercedes and BMW. This new joint venture with Rolls Royce opens up a complete new business opportunity with great potential for growth. Force Motors is a fully vertically integrated automobile company with expertise in design, development and manufacture of the full range of automotive components, aggregates and vehicles. Yamaha Chennai factory achieves 1 million production milestone

MG Motor takes over GM India’s Halol facility; To invest upwards of `2,000 crore

India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd. (IYM) has reached a major milestone of producing its one-millionth unit from the Chennai Factory on September 22, 2017. The one millionth model rolled out of the IYM’s Chennai factory is India’s most stylish scooter, Fascino. The other scooter and motorcycle models which contributed in reaching this landmark by IYM included Ray Z, Ray ZR, Alpha, Saluto and Saluto RX. Yamaha has so far invested Rs. 1300 crores in the Chennai Factory and plans to invest more than Rs. 200 crores by 2018. Chennai Factory is the first in the Yamaha Motor group which has a “Vendor Park” in its nearby vicinity. The vendor park has 9 vendors which have invested Rs. 760 crore to date, employing more than 1900 people.

The erstwhile car manufacturing plant of General Motors India in Halol, Gujarat was taken over by MG Motor, a UK based company. The Halol facility will now be the manufacturing plant for MG Motor. The company announced it has made an initial investment of Rs 2,000 crore. With an initial capacity of 80,000 units per annum in the first phase, MG Motor India will roll-out its first product from the plant in 2019. The state-of-the-art facility, spread over an area of 170 acres, will be completely revamped by MG Motor by 2019. The company has already hired an initial workforce of 70 employees at the plant. The facility will entail creation of significant number of jobs, apart from several additional indirect jobs in the state, as part of the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’ initiatives.

Modi, Japanese PM Abe inaugurate Suzuki lithium ion battery plant

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart from Japan Shinzo Abe have inaugurated the Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited’s vehicle manufacturing facilities and lithium ion battery manufacturing facility in Hansalpur in the state of Gujarat. Motown India had reported on April 14, 2017 that Suzuki of Japan along with Toshiba and Denso would be setting up a manufacturing facility for lithium ion batteries in the state of Gujarat. Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation, Toshiba Corporation and Denso Corporation had recently signed an agreement to establish a joint venture company for production of automotive lithium-ion battery packs in India.

Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan, has announced the foray of Ecstar – a high-performance engine oil and chemical brand developed by Suzuki, into the Indian-market. Tata Motors to deliver 10,000 Tigor e-sedans to Indian government E-Mobility in India got a real hard push when leading commercial and passenger car manufacturer in India Tata Motors emerged as the lowest bidder in the tender floated by Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), a joint venture comprising four Indian government owned power sector entities. Tata Motors has won the government-administered tender to sell 10,000 electric variants of the Tigor sedan car. The car is priced at Rs 10.16 lakh and supplies will begin in November 2017 and continue tlll October 2018. Though Tata Motors has exhibited several electric cars in the past, this is the first time that an electric car would be manufactured in such large numbers. EESL comprises of NTPC, Power Grid, Power

Intelligent Vehicle Door from Continental Automated driving and mobility solutions such as car-sharing and fleet services call for innovative vehicle access systems, as conventional vehicle keys will cease to be adequate for the mobility concepts of the future. That is why Continental has expanded its Smart Access solution for convenient vehicle access via smartphone to offer drivers a complete package of services. With the technology company’s new emergency unlocking solution, users can gain access to their vehicle even if the car battery is flat – and can do so completely digitally, without having to resort to the mechanical emergency key. In combination with the Continental Smart Access system, the entire door is intelligent, which means that it opens and closes independently. “The intelligent door is a milestone in access technology, as for the first time, we can offer users an all-round package for handsfree and digital operation, from unlocking the car and opening the door to starting the engine. With it, we are enabling an even more convenient and secure driving experience for drivers and offering more design freedom to manufacturers,” explains Andreas Wolf, head of Continental’s Body & Security business unit.

ACCESS TO THE VEHICLE, EVEN WHEN THE BATTERY IS DEAD, THANKS TO A DIGITAL KEY Until now when a car battery ran out drivers had to fall back on the mechanical emergency key and a manual door lock to get into their vehicles and open the hood. The emergency unlocking technology from Continental will render this unnecessary in the future. It does so by using buffered energy from the door control unit, which is sufficient to allow the door to be unlocked once more. This automatic emergency unlocking system is activated by means of NFC technology, such as via a smartphone, which transmits the signal following a successful security check and automatically triggers the unlocking process for the door. This means more convenience for users, as they no longer need a mechanical key, even for emergencies. It also opens up more design freedom for carmakers, as they no longer have to develop a conventional key with a blade and can dispense entirely with the emergency lock in the door. In combination with the automatic door opener, even the entire door handle

will become obsolete, which offers more options for the exterior design, whilst simultaneously improving the vehicle’s aerodynamic resistance. Ensuring that not only the emergency lock but also the entire door handle is surplus to requirements, Continental has integrated an assistant function into the intelligent door. “Electronically controlled doors enable convenient, hands-free operation. Our security and control algorithms make sure that you can open and close the vehicle door securely and easily,” explains Wolf.

HOW SMART ACCESS AND THE VIRTUAL KEY WORK Smart Access enables convenient vehicle access via a smartphone. The system centres on the virtual key, which is saved to a mobile end device. This key, which consists of a tamper-proof data record, gains access only after successful one-time authentication by the back end, which sends it to the smartphone via a wireless interface. Further communication takes place exclusively between the smartphone and the vehicle. For this purpose, the system uses multiple Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or NFC transceiver modules, located in the vehicle, to enable the authorized smartphone to be located both from inside and from outside. As soon as an authorized virtual key is detected, the system issues permission to open the vehicle and start the engine. Therefore, there is no longer any need for a mechanical key.
