T

he month gone by had been extremely busy for us. Post our 8th anniversary issue of Motown India magazine, we did not get time to rest, rather we were on our toes most of the days of October 2018. MG Motor India invited us to visit the SAIC Motor Corporation plant in Lingang in Shanghai, China. We also visited their design centre and their proving

ground in Guangde, around 350km from Shanghai.

SAIC is definitely big. Its fully owned subsidiary MG Motor India is planning to launch an SUV in Indian in the second quarter of 2019, followed by an electric passenger vehicle a year later. SAIC has some ambitious plans for India. Both our B2C as well as B2B sections have extensive reports on SAIC’s India plan and its inherent strength in the field of technology and manufacturing.

We have reviewed the all new Hyundai Santro, the new Ford Aspire and two-wheelers like the Hero Destini, Yamaha R15 v3.0 and the Kawasaki Ninja 300. In the B2B section we have loads of corporate stories, reports on commercial vehicles and automotive technology.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was at his best during the launch of the all-new Hyundai Santro in the Capital. Both are iconic, the new Hyundai Santro which has been around for 20 years and Bollywood badshah Shah Rukh Khan who incidentally has been around on this beautiful Mother Earth for the last 53 years. It was 20 years ago that a much younger Khan had endorsed the Santro from Hyundai Motor India. Hyundai was then an unknown brand in India and Santro was just going to make its debut in India. Since then both have done exceptionally well. Khan remains the heartthrob of India, the evergreen superstar who is today a great success story. At the launch of the all-new Santro in New Delhi, Khan looked quite a handsome man unveiling the equally handsome looking Santro. According to Shah Rukh Khan his 20 year old relationship with the Santro brand is more than a business tie-up and it was one of the saddest moments in his life when he found out that Hyundai would halt production of the car in 2014. “My Santro is back! said an emotional Shah Rukh Khan at the launch. He also applauded Hyundai for doing something different by designing a product around their brand ambassador and not the other way round, which is how it is generally done. Known for his iconic arms wide open pose, the badshah of Bollywood was asked to strike the pose with the new Santro to which he obliged. Referring to his 20 years association with the Santro, Khan said the only longer association he has had in his life in terms of relationships is with wife Gauri which completed 27 years on October 25, 2018. Happy wedding anniversary to the lovely couple! Hyundai Motor India has launched the all new tall boy Santro hatchback family car at a starting price of Rs.3.89 lakh (ex showroom). The car was launched in New Delhi by Y K Koo, MD & CEO of Hyundai Motor India. This is a global debut and the car is launched with a smart auto Automated Manual transmission (AMT). The K1 platform of the car ensures spacious cabin in the all new Santro and good ride and handling. The all new Santro will also have an option of a factory fitted CNG variant. Maserati India drives-in restyled GranTurismo at `2.25 crore Maserati, the Italian luxury carmaker, has launched the restyled GranTurismo in the Indian market. Globally unveiled at the Goodwood Festival last year, the restyled 2018 GranTurismo will be available at the price of Rs 2.25 cr (exshowroom).

The Maserati Design Centre team in Turin approached the restyling by treating the timeless Pininfarina design with utmost respect. The car’s new “sharknose” hexagonal grille is inspired by the Alfieri Concept

and adds a three-dimensional effect to the frontal view. Together with the new, lower air ducts, the grille helps improve the airflow distribution and reduces aerodynamic drag from

0.33 to 0.32 for the GranTurismo. The rear bumper has also been redesigned with an emphasis on the natural elegance of the iconic GT coupé and cabriolet, featuring a neater design with twofold layout for the Sport and MC versions. The interior of the GranTurismo offers comfort for four adults thanks to the individual Poltrona Frau leather seats with integrated headrests. For 2018, the interior features a new, high resolution 8.4” capacitive touch screen and refined ergonomics. The state-of-the art infotainment system is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring functions.

The model comprises two distinct versions, the Sport and the MC. Equipped with the naturally aspirated 4.7-litre V8 engine, which was hand-crafted by Ferrari in Maranello, the car produces 460hp at 7,000rpm and 520Nm peak torque at 4,750rpm. A six-speed ZF Automatic Gearbox is attached directly to the V8 powerhouse.

New Aston Martin Vantage launched in New Delhi at `2.86 crore Almost a year after it was launched globally, the new Aston Martin Vantage debuted in New Delhi. The car has been priced at Rs 2.86 crore (exShowroom). This translates to Rs 28.6 million. Present at the launch in New Delhi were Nancy Chen, Head of Sales Operations for Aston Martin, South and Southeast Asia and Yadur Kapur, Dealer Principal, Aston Martin New

Delhi (Select Cars Pvt. Ltd.). The new Aston Martin Vantage is a sports car, powered by 4.0-litre, 510PS/685Nm twin-turbo V8 mated to an eight-speed transmission, is channeled by its bold and distinctive design language. Pure, sculptural forms create an athletic, predatory stance, while the minimal front and rear overhangs, muscular flanks and

8 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2018

broad haunches express the agility and dynamism inherent with the car. Its new head and tail lights form dramatic new signatures, giving the Vantage unmistakable road presence and contribute to a strong, individual identity within the growing Aston Martin model range. Aerodynamic performance was central to the Vantage design concept: the front

splitter directs airflow underneath the car, where a system of fences channels cooling air where it is needed, and also ensures the rear diffuser is fed with clean airflow. The design of the diffuser creates an area of low pressure air, while simultaneously preventing turbulence generated by the rear wheels from disrupting the flow of air exiting centrally from beneath the car.

Maruti Suzuki Swift gets 2 stars in Global NCAP crash test The latest version of the Maruti Suzuki Swift with standard double airbags, and ISOFIX (i-size) anchorages, reached two stars in Adult Occupant Protection and two stars for Child Occupant Protection in the Global NCAP crash test. This was the latest update released by Global NCAP to its #SaferCarsForIndia crash test results. Barely a few weeks back, the Global NCAP crash test had given 4 stars to the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza for adult occupant protection. The Renault Lodgy without air bags scored a zero in a similar crash test by Global NCAP, a UK based charity which conducts crash tests on cars for safety purposes. Renault India said later in a press statement that its products meet and exceed the regulations set by the Indian government controlled Automotive Research Association of India. ARAI.

the Indian version underperformed in the frontal crash test and is offering less safety features like side body and curtain airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) that are standard for Europe, in India are not even optional.

As for the Maruti Suzuki Swift, the two stars result for adult occupants is due to high compression to the driver chest, unstable structure and poor protection for the feet explained by pedal displacement on the driver side. The Child Occupant Protection of only two stars is explained by the forward facing positioning of the 18 month old dummy in the test offering low protection and also the low protection offered to the chest of the 3 year old dummy.

David Ward, Global NCAP Secretary General said, “The latest version of the Swift sold in India has improved and it is good to see dual airbags as standard. This confirms the beneficial effect of the Indian Government’s new crash test regulations. But the performance of the Swift sold in Europe and Japan shows that a better safety performance is still possible so Global NCAP would like to see Maruti Suzuki aim higher.”

In comparison to its predecessor tested by Global NCAP in 2014, the new Swift offers two standard airbags and I-size approved anchorage points for CRS which demonstrated a two star performance in safety tests. However comparing it to its twin model for the European market,

Alejandro Furas, Global NCAP Technical Director said, “Maruti Suzuki proved with the Brezza that they can produce local models with high safety performance. They should do the same with the Swift and at least make it available in the model range added safety features available as standard in the European and Japanese version”.

The unique exhaust note of the old Jawa was something that the company was in love with and it wanted its engine to have a unique sound, given that replicating the tone of a classic 2-stroke on a modern day 4-stroke would be a big challenge. A maverick team of sound engineers in Italy worked extensively with the company through

countless cycles of harmonic pipe combinations and multiple other permutations to discover a sound that was worthy of the new Jawa. While the engine needed to be built with a reminiscent sameness it needed to be an engine of the future.

TALL BOY LEGEND

Report: P. Tharyan ; Photography: Afsar Baig

he 2018 Hyundai Santro built on a new K1 platform still carries the legendary tall boy design. But it is no more just the boxy shape. The car is a lot more contemporary in its looks. The car now comes in D-lite variant at the lower end and four other variants Era, Magna, Sportz and the top one being Asta. We got to drive the Asta and the variant below that, the Sportz. The Asta only comes with a 5-speed manual transmission and does not come with an automatic transmission, while the Sportz has an option of an AMT and a factory fitted CNG. We drove the Sportz AMT and the Asta MT. The car is powered by a petrol 1.1 litre four-cylinder engine.

EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The Santro now has a 3610mm length compared to 3565mm of the old Santro. The overall width is now 1645mm, compared to 1525mm of the old Santro. The overall height is now 1560mm, compared to 1590mm in

the old model. Here the tall boy takes a wee bit of beating of 30mm. The wheel base is now 2400mm compared to 2380mm of the old Santro. On the style front on the exterior, the car has now a very broad grill which the company calls the cascade design chrome front grille. It reminds you of Heath Ledger who play the role of Joker in the film The Dark Knight. Decently styled, swept back headlamps and uniquely positioned fog lamps give the car a pleasing front personality. There is a first-in-segment micro antenna. The side profile of the car is quite sculpted with prominent wheel arches. As you go back, you get to see stylish tail lamps and dual tone rear bumper with reflectors. Very sporty indeed. The car sits on 165/70 R14 tyres with steel wheels and a hub cap. This profile is available only for the SportZ and Asta variants. The others get R13 tyres.

INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES Compared to the old Santro, this one’s got more leg room in front at 1030mm, compared to 972mm in the old one. The shoulder room in front is now 1310 mm compared to 1215mm. At the rear the leg room is now 886mm as compared to 870mm in the old Santro and the shoulder room is now 1310mm as compared to 1215mm. To get inside you have remote keyless entry. Ingress and egress continues to be cool, especially for tall people. The cabin looks chic and tech friendly. The dash area looks good with decent plastic used. The car gets a dual tone beige and black interiors with champagne gold inserts The centre fascia looks good which the company says is elephant inspired. The entire dash area looks chic with the AC knobs, the 7 inches touchscreen, the volume buttons, a 12V power outlet and a USB port. The power

window buttons are placed near the gear lever towards the floor. The AC vents have a modern appeal, especially the ones on the sides which are propeller inspired. This small car also comes with a rear ac vent, a first in the segment. On the right of the steering wheel on the dash are the buttons to electrically adjust the ORVMs. In order to keep the cabin free of any foul smell, there is an Eco Coating Technology which prevents unpleasant smell to develop in the AC Evaporator by degrading the microorganisms developed in the AC Evaporator Core.

in the glove compartment and even above the glove box area. The boot has a 235 litre space. The seats, I must admit are very comfortable and provide decent thigh support as well as back support. The steering comes with volume controls as well as buttons to change channels. There are also buttons for voice navigation. The 7 inches touchscreen is equipped with smart phone connectivity - Android

Auto, Apple Car Play & Mirror Link and voice recognition function along with iblue smartphone app support. The car comes with electric power steering with a 6.35 cm Multi Information Display which shows fuel efficiency, dual trip meter, etc. There is an analog speedometer and tachometer. The Asta is the only variant that gets a passenger air bag, reverse parking camera, reverse parking sensors

and rear wiper washer, besides pretionsioners and a passenger vanity mirror.

SAFETY AND PERFORMANCE I took turns driving the manual Asta model and the automatic Sportz models. Both the cars offered great comfort in driving. In the manual transmission, a lack of power is quite noticeable as you hit the highways. While on the city roads, this car is cool and quick on its feet, it’s on the highways it

gets to struggle a bit with the manual. But once you shift into the final gear, there is lot of action for you to enjoy. The AMT on the other hand in the Sportz is a genius. No hydraulic actuators here, rather this AMT gets an electric actuator which means there is an electric motor for gear shifting and clutch operation. Being electric it means there is a fast actuator response and smooth shifting of gears.

is also standard across variants. As you move up the value chain you get speed sensing door locks and impact sensing auto door unlocks. Braking is good with discs in front and drums at the rear. NVH levels are impressive for a small car.

The all new Santro comes with ABS and EBD as standard. The driver airbag

The all-new Santro has come a long way. It’s no more just a practical boxy tall boy design. It’s very modern, very chic, very practical and carries loads of first-in segment features that are bound to find favour among the consumers of today. Yes, the legend is back. Back, to make a huge difference in the small car segment!

tyres. The profile of the tyre reads 195/55 R 15. Mind you this is only in the Titanuim and Titanium + variants and for the Ambiente, Trend and Trend+ variants, it is steel wheels with 175/65 R 14 tyres.

INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The cabin of the all-new Ford Aspire is bright with its beige coloured upholstery. The plastic used around the dash area is of decent material. The dash area looks very clean and uncluttered and has an easy right flowing design to it. The fabric seats have good support for the back and under thigh. The cabin comes with convenience features including a reverse parking camera, automatic climate control system, two USB slots, push-button start/ stop, electrochromic IRVM and rain-sensing wipers.

The steering wheel comes with basic controls like volume control and voice command. This electric power assisted steering wheel can be tilted but is not telescopic. The rear seats too are comfortable, although I feel with people around 6 feet or above in height may have a tad discomfort in terms of head room and knee room. Since the top-end variant comes with 6 airbags, there are no grab handles for those seated in the vehicle.

30 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2018

The Inner door panels of the vehicle have ample storage space in its skin with two bottle holders and some extra space. At one end of the dash

you have a cavity where you can tuck away your keys, as this model has a start stop function.

diesel variant is so superb, even at high speeds and on bad roads it stayed planted to the roads. At higher rpms you do get to hear the diesel engine grunting and the noise percolating into the cabin. But that can surely be overlooked because it’s not so bad. The car has disc brakes in front and drums at the rear.

There is a plain Jane looking centre arm rest for the rear passengers. The car features the SYNC 3 in-car infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen which allows drivers to control their entertainment and connected smartphone using voice commands. SYNC 3 system is Apple CarPlay & Android Auto compatible and will allow drivers to use navigation through their iOS or Android paired phones. It also offers Emergency

Assistance, a technology that automatically calls emergency services from a paired phone in case of an accident.

SAFETY AND PERFORMANCE I took turns driving the diesel and the petrol variants. The diesel is peppy like hell. It’s a turbo charged one and you really do not get to feel as it kicks in around the 1200 rpm level on the tachometer. This is where the torque comes into play big time and the vehicle gets going in a hurry. The road handling of the

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com

The all-new, threecylinder 1.2L TiVCT petrol engine in the Ford Aspire is not at all a push over compared to its diesel bro. No turbo here but simply naturally aspirated, it’s spirited though it lags a wee bit at the early stages of the drive but when you push the accelerator, it surely catches up with its diesel bro in performance. Both engines are paired to an all-new, five-speed manual transmission. I am truly impressed by this transmission because shifting comes so easy in this vehicle and the engine seems to be perfectly mated to it. According to the company, this new

manual transmission is almost 15% lighter and helps improve fuel economy while reducing NVH. It requires 40% lesser gear oil than its predecessor. I am a stickler for safety. In the top end of the Ford Aspire the company is offering six airbags. The car has Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD). Features like Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Hill-Launch Assist feature and Traction Control System only come in the sole automatic version.

VERDICT All in all, the new Ford Aspire is a worthy contender in the sub-4 metres car segment in India. If inspirations are what finally lead to aspirations, there is a lot this new car has in terms of inspirations that can lead a person to aspire for this all-new Ford Aspire!

HERO DESTINI 125

O

ne of the prime reasons why people love automatic scooters so much is because they do not have to worry about changing gears. But what if turning the scooter on and off was also automatic and intuitive? Well in such a case you end with a scooter like the Hero Destini 125.

Report: Motown India Bureau

DESIGN AND STYLING The Hero Destini 125 boasts of a clean and somewhat premium design scheme. It has a curvy and chrome heavy front that has long swept back turn indicators. The beefy tail-lamp is a looker as well. The only thing that I found missing was LED headlamps or DRLs. The seat cushion is broad and comfortable for two people

32 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2018

and if you go for the Vx variant, it comes with dual texture. The part analogue, part digital instrument cluster is basic but functional as it shows you your speed, distance covered, time, fuel level and has a trip meter. A remote release allows the rider to open the externally located fuel fill cap easily and the scooter has a handy indicator

that buzzes if you start the scooter with the lid open. The boot area is decent for a small helmet or bag and you can get a boot light and USB charging port in the higher variant.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE I cannot say much about the performance as I only rode

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com

# HERODESTINI125 the scooter for about 10 minutes through city roads. What I did gather was that the scooter has a likeable response in the low and mid range that is good for city use. It is not the best when it comes to acceleration but pulling a single person was not a big issue for the scooter. I did, however, notice vibrations when accelerating from low speeds. It could just be a bad unit or perhaps a genuine issue. We can only be certain once we get the vehicle for review. I was a bit concerned when I got to know that the Destini 125 does not come with a disc brake at the front. But it does get Integrated Braking System

(IBS) or combined braking as it is commonly known. In practice this is effective for most cases but a disc brake will be missed. Granted that this is supposed to be a family oriented scooter and that those riding won’t be too concerned with speed. The Destini 125 is the first Indian scooter to feature the Idle Start Stop (i3s) technology. Hero has already employed i3s in a number of their bikes and has now brought it to their scooter. In the few times that I tested it, it worked almost every time barring a few tries. The main purpose of using i3s is to save fuel and the company claims that the Destini 125 should deliver a mileage of 51kmpl.

Since we were riding the scooter in central Delhi, one of the few places in the capital where you have smooth tarmac, I could not really judge the suspension. While going over a few speedbreakers and a pothole I did feel that the suspension did a decent job of filtering out the shock. The grip from the 10 inch wheel was adequate and the scooter felt firm on its feet.

VERDICT Hero has launched the Destini 125 in two variants, Lx and

Vx which cost Rs 54.650 (ex-showroom Delhi) and Rs 57,500 (ex-showroom Delhi). This makes this 125cc scooter quite affordable in comparison to what is available in the segment currently. One must note that the Lx variant, despite being the cheapest 125cc scooter, does miss out on quite a few features. In case you just want a good looking 125cc scooter that packs in decent amount of convenience and comfort then it could be worth visiting the company showroom.

T

he Yamaha YZF R15 bikes have found immense success and love in the Indian market since the time they were launched. These are entry level racing machines from the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer that people have bought for daily usage. If you have read my report about the

track experience I had with the new R15 v3.0 then you would know that it left me quite excited and proved that the bike did not feel like an outsider there. But even while flying through the corners of MMRT I had one important question going on in my mind. How well would it do in the city? Well it is time to answer just that.

34 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2018

DESIGN AND STYLING I won’t take up too much time drooling over how stylish and on point the bike looks. The designers have got the styling bang on and the bike does look like a sophisticated high end sports bike. I am still not able to make up my mind as to which colour scheme I like more, the funky Racing Blue

or the stealthy Thunder Grey. Sadly, while the design has been borrowed from the R6, the level of materials used is nowhere near that of the elder sibling. The use of plastic takes away some of the charm when you get up close to the new R15. The air vents and fins on the fuel tank, front and tail end of the bike lend it a very

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com

#YAMAHAYZFR15V3.0

aerodynamic appeal. The new R15 has its seat height raised a little and the handlebars lowered when compared to the previous version. It was super fun on the track where you ride for only a little while and need minimum area exposed to the windblast. That same committed riding

position can become painful after an hour or so of riding on the city streets. So if you buy this bike you will have to be mindful of that. The fully digital instrument cluster packs in a load of information but fails to impress when it comes to design and build. To its credit, the display has everything in a decent font size and maintains

enough brightness to be visible even on a sunny day.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE There is no doubt that the slightly bigger 155cc, liquid cooled, single cylinder engine has loads of power and torque to impress enthusiasts. In the city, I did get to test another

aspect of the bike, Variable Valve Actuation (VVA). VVA allows the bike to have dual characteristics. When you are at lower rpms, below 7400rpm, the bike tunes itself to deliver more power in the low and mid range by using the lower cam. The moment you pull the accelerator and go north of 7400rpm, the

#YAMAHAYZFR15V3.0 VVA indication flashes on the digital display and the bike switches to a different intake cam to deliver a better top end response. I was not fully able to feel the usefulness of VVA on the track, where you are almost always chasing the redline, but out in the city you go through all kinds of terrains and situations and this is where I was able to see VVA in proper action. The shift in cam profile is evident, but in a good way. Even if you are not looking at the instrument cluster for the VVA indication, you will feel the bike change its character slightly when you are gunning it. The Yamaha R15 v3.0 delivered a better fuel economy than I expected. Despite my ‘not so efficient’ riding I got close to 38kmpl. When I did do a fuel friendly run I saw an average of about 45kmpl. Keeping aside the fact that the Indian version of this bike lacks ABS, the disc brakes have a lot of bite and progression to offer. Yes, when it comes to panic braking, especially considering how quick this bike is, you will miss ABS. Using the front brake does reveal that the front forks are slightly squishy as they dip a bit more than you would expect. The front forks are in stark contrast with the rear monoshock which is a lot stiffer and not the best at soaking city road harshness. The

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com

slip and assist clutch was a great help on the track and even in the city you do appreciate the light clutch. The gearing is such that you go through the first three gears rather quickly. Despite that the bike does not feel stressed when you are on the 6th gear but are just cruising at 50kmph or so. The bike that I got on the track had a Metzeler tyre at the rear but you get an MRF as stock. The MRF on my road test unit was capable enough to make its way through the various roads in the city of Delhi without making me want more grip at any point.

VERDICT If you are a fan of the R15 brand and you wanted the new R15 to be sportier and more powerful than before then the new R15 v3.0 delivers. But the fact that the bike has become more sporty and more powerful has somewhat played against its credibility in the city. The stiffer suspension and a committed riding position hold it back. The engine and clutch response will almost instantly make you fall in love with the bike and the only real concern that I had with the bike was absence of ABS. But where the bike shines is as an entry level track machine that you can pop your track cherry on!

T

he Ninja 300 bikes from Kawasaki are like a gateway that leads you up towards a heaven of bigger sports bikes that can scare and amuse you at the same time. These 300cc bikes are there to give you a taste, a lesson if you will, on how to tame the power that can be had with a different breed of motorcycles. In the last year or so we have had a lot of manufacturers taking a bite of the 300cc segment resulting in a lot of great bikes. Does this new Ninja 300 still stay relevant in the competition? Thanks to Aurum Kawasaki in Chattarpur Enclave, New Delhi, who generously lent us the bike to review, we were able to find out.

DESIGN AND STYLING The new Ninja 300 looks much like its elder siblings and has a very sporty and stylish look. With the new graphics plastered on, the bike gives a very energetic and wild feel. The Ninja 300 that I got to ride came in the signature Kawasaki green but I think that the electrifying blue paint looks better. The mean looking beak at the front houses twin

Report: Aakash S. Paul; Photography: Afsar Baig halogen units and sadly there are no LED DRLs. To their credit, these halogen units do provide a very respectable illumination at night. Despite the bike boasting of very aggressive looks, it is very comfortable to ride. It has an upright seating position and handlebars that are not set too low making this bike lovable to ride in the city. The cushion is comfortable and there is also a pillion seat which is pretty decent by sports bike standards. Even after hours and hours of riding on this bike, your body won’t be screaming in pain. The cool looks of the bike are only interrupted by the grab handle at the back, which makes the bike look like some kind of utility vehicle. Come on Kawasaki, if you can develop your own supercharged engine then I am pretty sure you can do a better job at designing a simple grab handle! I only wish the instrument cluster was a bit more fleshed out. Not that the panel provided is bad, it just pales a little in comparison

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com

to the fancy kit on other competing bikes. On the Ninja 300 you get a big analogue tachometer along with a couple of indicators and a rather small digital display. The digital display shows things like the speedometer, odometer, two trip meters, fuel level and time. If anything, it could have included a distance to empty and gear level indicator.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The 296cc twin cylinder engine on the Ninja 300 is one of the most refined among the bikes I have ridden recently. The way it climbs the speedometer without shuddering like a shack in the storm is remarkable. Peak power of 38.4hp and peak torque of 27Nm comes at 11,000rpm and 10,000rpm which are a bit late for city use. The bike does struggle a little when you want to accelerate quickly, especially in the second gear. Though the acceleration is very linear and smooth and you do get used to it after a few hours of riding. The good thing, however, is that this bike is loads of fun to rev. You do not feel the need to up shift until you reach the redline and that is a feeling you can get addicted to.

WHEELZ & ROADZ A riding experience

Give this bike an open highway and it can go way over 100kmph with ease. The slip and assist clutch makes clutch pulls effortless and gear shift precise. I really admired that when I found myself stuck in traffic. Riding around the city on the Ninja 300 will not be a bother because the liquid cooling does a good job of keeping the engine cool. Only when you find yourself stuck in traffic is there some warmth to be felt on the right leg. In my short experience with the bike I was getting close to 32kmpl which is pretty good for a bike in this segment. The exhaust note left me wanting for a bit more. It starts off nice and bassy but as you pull the accelerator, the sound becomes more treble heavy and a bit feeble. Handling this bike is fun and almost effortless. It is great for people who want to try bigger bikes but are afraid that they won’t be able to handle them properly.

40 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2018

Maneuvering the Ninja 300 through traffic was no problem. Kawasaki has equipped this bike with dual channel ABS with a 290mm petal disc brake at the front and a 220mm petal disc at the rear. Both come with dual piston calipers and offer nice progression. The front outshines the rear brake which takes a little while to come into full force. Even the ABS intrusion is more apparent when you stomp on the rear brake immediately. The 17-inches MRF Zapper tyres provide excellent grip on the road and it is very easy to maintain your line when you chuck this bike into a corner. The agile nature of the bike combined with its surefootedness encourages you to lean a lot every time there is a tasty bend. If I were to nitpick, a wider tyre at the rear would have further improved the stability of the bike over rocky and muddy surfaces. The suspension in its stock state has been tuned to be a little stiff and potholes and bumps are felt when you

go over them. Thankfully you can adjust the rear suspension to be more forgiving and comfortable over undulations.

VERDICT If you are in the market for a 300cc twin cylinder motorcycle then there is really no reason for you to look beyond the Kawasaki Ninja 300. It looks ferocious, has a very comfortable riding position and a very refined motor. This new iteration of the Ninja 300 has come down in price by almost Rs 60,000 and now costs Rs 2.98 lakh (ex-showroom), thanks to the increase in localisation of parts. Yes, you could get a few single cylinder 300cc bikes for less but they will not pack the kind of refinement and top end performance that the new Ninja 300 has to offer.

It was as though we were at a top secret facility of SAIC Motor Corporation. SAIC’s Guangde Proving Ground, which completed construction in 2012, is the

largest such facility in the ASEAN region. Spread over 5.67 square kilometers, it is renowned for rolling out vehicles that meet the highest levels of safety, quality, performance, and durability.

The proving ground has a total length of more than 60 kilometers of test roads and more than 70 kinds of typical pavements. SAIC vehicles have been tested over a mileage of 20 million kilometers here.

We had to confine ourselves to only three venues here which included a racing track, ring track and a simulated ice and high speed slalom.’

According to Rajeev Chaba, President & Managing Director of MG Motor India, this facility in Guangde was built at a cost equivalent to around Rs 1600 crore. Other rival brands in China can use this facility at a rent of around Rs 50 to Rs 80 lakh for testing their own cars here. Each of the drives barely took a few minutes and we had to hop out for the rest of journalists waiting eagerly for their turns.

VENUE #1 Before I give you my impressions on the MG and Roewe brands of SAIC Motor Passenger car division let me confess to you that I had entered the proving ground with a terribly misconstrued conception that Chinese car makers, no matter how big they are, cannot match the big names of the West. All that changed the moment I was behind the wheels of the sporty MG6 hybrid on the race track and rotated the big knob on the

centre console that put the car into the drive mode. At speeds above 80kmph, I cornered the car and sped between the various cones marked on the ground. Despite the sharp cuts and corners, the car was so grounded and its suspension so top notch that I could barely feel the car stray. It was spot on at the corners. The straight line acceleration, high speed cornering, U turn, slalom and S cornering brought out the finer points of the vehicle, be it its engine power, steering perfection, tyre grip, traction

The term Internet car refers to the next-generation of vehicles based on internet of things (IoT) technologies. The physical elements of the RX5 are designed and developed by SAIC Motor. It is marketed and sold under SAIC Motor’s Roewe brand. Alibaba, on the other hand, provides the operating system for the vehicle’s infotainment

To give you a simple example of what AliOS does, you can through voice command open the sun roof of the car, but where technology comes into play is when the car’s intelligent system goes through the real time weather forecast and warns you that it’s best not to open the roof as it could begin to rain any moment.

I was impressed by the way this vehicle handled on the track and its chassis stability including body flexibility. The Roewe ERX5 has a length of 4554mm, a width of 1855mm and a height of 1716mm. It has a permanent magnet synchronous motor with ternary lithium battery. The car offers a NEDC

Well, the first impression I got of the Roewe ERX5 was that it was a lot more subtle compared to the Marvel X. My time with the cars at the Guangde proving ground was very limited. I am sure when MG Motor India finally introduces its SUV in the Indian market in the second quarter of 2019, it will have the best of technology and features influenced by not just the MG and Roewe brands but the handful of other global brands it has in the kitty of SAIC Motor Corporation.

GLOBAL ELECTRIC VEHICLE TO FOLLOW SUV IN INDIA FOR MG MOTOR INDIA MG Motor India announced the launch of its second product for the Indian market - a global pureelectric SUV within one year of its first vehicle launch. The first vehicle, an SUV, will be launched in India in the 2nd quarter of 2019. “MG will launch a globallycompetitive pure-electric SUV in India, to make our contribution to India’s energy and environmental strategies. The pure electric SUV will be a breakthrough chapter in the EV space in India, being one of its kind in the market. This is in addition to the first SUV which we plan to launch in the second quarter of next year,” said Michael Yang, Executive Director of International Business, SAIC Motor & President of SAIC Motor International Company.

Yang made this announcement in the presence of Rajeev Chaba, President and Managing Director, MG Motor India and a large contingent of auto journalists invited from India to Shanghai. Senior SAIC & MG Motor India officials in Shanghai

Chaba mentioned that the C segment SUV will be made in Halol in the Indian state of Gujarat and would be manufactured in both petrol and diesel powertrains and would have at least 75 per cent localization. RAJEEV CHABA President & MD, MG Motor India

Very briefly can you tell us about SAIC Motor Corporation? It’s a Chinese company with a legacy of its own but is it a force to reckon with? Just to give you a perspective of the company, SAIC sells almost 70 lakh cars per year and the Indian market is 30 lakhs per year. So this company is the market leader. They have got various brands and lots of platforms to choose from. MG brand which the company owns actually is a British brand with 94 years old history and legacy and it was an iconic brand. MG cars were exported to the US also in big number and in India also we have more than 300

MG owners. A lot of cars were made on the MG platform. So now when SAIC has taken over this British brand they want to take this globally now and we have already launched in many countries. India is going to be the next destination and we are going to launch our first car next year in Q2 2019. So the good part is that SAIC has got huge resources. They are investing in technology, they are investing in EV cars, they are investing in hybrids and connectedness, shared mobility. So all this knowledge I think can be transferred to India at the right time whenever we and

48 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2018

our customers need it. Your company makes a large number of cars that are also exported out of China, yet in India you are going to be cautious and bold. The reason being you are launching an SUV first and a year later an electric vehicle. So it’s cautious and bold. You agree? There are two things here and very rightly you have said cautious and bold. We want to lay a good foundation to start with and SUV C-segment hopefully is the right segment we feel to enter and our focus is to make sure that we choose good dealers, we have good employees and we

can give a great experience to the Indian consumers. It’s not only the initial buying experience but also the cost of ownerships, spare parts, resale parts everything hopefully is as per the Indian consumer expectation. Once we lay the right foundation, then we start getting into more spaces. Now, EV is a very important thing because the government of India has shown the intention and vision to get into that space because that’s the global trend and to take care of the environmental issues I think all of us have some responsibility. So the government of India

“The good news is we know all the issues as you said experience means we know all the issues, we know how different manufacturers have done, what we can learn from them, successes and mistakes. So this is what we are observing and trying to do and it should be an interesting journey. Opportunity is that we know what can go wrong so we are trying to get ready and trying to make a final offer which is compelling for the consumers.”

wants OEMs to take that responsibility so we are saying okay either we can wait for the infrastructure to develop or join hands with other stake holders including government to start this journey and take some leadership. Luckily for us in SAIC, we are leaders globally in this space so why not bring it to India right now. It’s going to be challenging, it’s not easy, we would have road blocks, but I think with the right intension with the good help of government I think we should be able to solve it. So that’s why it’s bold. You talked about space, you talked about electric vehicles,

the IC engine vehicles but what about a commercial vehicles because you are also big there with the Maxus brand? You are right. Luckily, as I said earlier, we have a plethora of products and platforms and we can bring it to India at the right time but I think it’s one step at a time. The bigger vision is there, the dream is there but as they say, you need to be realistic. We need to make sure that we do a good job in phase 1 wherein we establish a good foundation, people accept us and people accept our proposition. Once they like our products and experience, hopefully after that we can get into other products including

commercial vehicles. You are a man with great experience, you have worked with some very big names and you have also been posted abroad with great responsibility. Are you optimistic and cautious in your approach at MG Motor India? It’s not going to be easy. To be very honest, I am nervous you know because it’s not easy to crack our Indian market. We may talk about theory but execution is tough. So right now I think all of us are on our toes. We believe in start-up kind of a culture at this point of time. We need to make sure that we take all kinds of different initiatives, do

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com

different things, do different experimentation but at the same point of time we are able to execute to consumer expectation. It’s not going to be easy so we know that. The good news is we know all the issues as you said experience means we know all the issues, we know how different manufacturers have done, what we can learn from them, successes and mistakes. So this is what we are observing and trying to do and it should be an interesting journey. BorgWarner’s EGR solution for reduced NOx emissions In times of increasingly stringent emissions regulations, advanced technologies are more important than ever. BorgWarner, a global leader in clean and efficient solutions for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles, supplies a major global automaker across different regions of the world with its best-in-class EGR system. Featured in one of their engines, BorgWarner’s solution will reduce NOx emissions for several diesel vehicles, helping them comply with latest regulations, such as Euro 6d. “We are happy to expand our

relationship with this globally renowned automaker as a Tier 1 supplier of choice for a wide range of vehicles,” said Joe Fadool, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Emissions & Thermal Systems. “With our latest integrated EGR system, BorgWarner meets significantly increasing demand for efficient and clean technologies for combustion applications. Supplying customers with one complete module instead of single components strengthens our position as a leading supplier for heat exchange technologies,” he added.

BorgWarner’s sophisticated EGR system is an effective and cost-efficient inside-the-engine method to significantly reduce NOX emissions by recirculating a controllable proportion of the exhaust gas back into the intake air. BorgWarner’s EGR system reduces NOx emissions through optimized heat absorption as well as lowering oxygen concentration within the combustion chamber, resulting in lower peak cylinder temperatures. With the capability to resist high thermal loads, the advanced all-in-one solution enables

increased efficiency and durable performance even with minimal coolant flow. The EGR module unites numerous technologies such as an EGR cooler, a bypass and an EGR valve into one compact package.

BorgWarner eBooster and Motor Generator Unit combining synergies for future mobility BorgWarner has presented a smart combination of the company’s eBooster electrically driven compressor and its belted motor generator unit (MGU) on a demonstrator vehicle. Easily integrated into existing propulsion systems, the costeffective combination provides an ideal solution for 48-volt electrification. Benefits such as improved low speed engine torque in combination with engine downsizing, downspeeding and brake energy recuperation allow for significant fuel efficiency enhancements. On a demonstration vehicle, a heavy pickup truck, the synergy between the components enables energy efficient means to collect regenerated energy and provide added torque, faster engine response, and extended engine off operation among a list of added features.

The current trend toward 48-volt electrified vehicles is growing as the automotive industry faces two important challenges. Vehicles need to be more efficient to meet stringent emissions regulations and even a 48-volt architecture has limited electrical energy storage. Also, more electrical power is needed to support added vehicle features. “At BorgWarner, we are constantly working on improving our system technology solutions. The combination of our eBooster technology with the MGU presents an ideal 48-volt capable solution for our customers and strengthens our position as a supplier of choice,” said Robin Kendrick, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Turbo Systems.

eBooster electrically driven compressor is independent of the exhaust gas flow, as it uses an electric motor to drive the compressor wheel. It provides outstanding low-end

torque and can be installed in different locations of the air path with an actively controlled bypass valve next to it. High system efficiency as well as extraordinary power density and improved acceleration time virtually eliminate turbo lag. The technology reduces pumping losses, and – due to higher low end torque – allows for the possibility of further downsizing and downspeeding.

It is the biggest and 1st digital loyalty programme in the history of Indian 2wheeler industry, says the company. Uniti anticipates this Industry 4.0 pilot facility to be operational by 2020, leading the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies. “The UK’s approach to vehicle production, with its focus on light-weighting and innovation in advanced materials, is an ideal model for electric car production globally,” says Uniti CEO, Lewis Horne. “It’s no secret that some of the world’s best vehicle engineers are clustered around Silverstone. When coupled with a government receptive to our ambition and goals, we couldn’t find a better home to establish our pilot production facility,” he added.

Uniti has been working with MEPC at Silverstone Park to develop a vision for the pilot plant, with further details to be announced soon. This is the first of several planned initiatives for Uniti to establish itself in the United Kingdom, working towards a goal of becoming a major player in the UK’s EV market over the next few years. To date, the Swedish carmaker has already engaged a team of engineers at an R&D centre in Northamptonshire while fostering partnerships with local companies such as KW Special Projects (LightWeight Structure and Additive Manufacturing), Danecca (EV Powertrain), and Unipart (Global Supply Chain). Concurrent to Uniti’s engineering activities in Silverstone, the company is setting up an office in London to ensure capital is raised for UK operations on a timescale meaningful to their plans.

“The future of Great Britain is electric and autonomous,” says Sally Povolotsky, Uniti’s Vehicle Development Director. “Through my work with Silverstone Technology Cluster ACES, I can attest this is an exciting time for the UK automotive industry, and one of rapid growth and innovation. Once the Uniti pilot plant facility is fully operational, we can take this blueprint global,“ said Povolotsky. Uniti plans to unveil its production models in late 2019 and deliver vehicles to pre-order customers throughout northern Europe shortly thereafter. As the UK represents a key market, the Swedish carmaker has recently announced a limited equity crowdfunding campaign through UK-based Crowdcube to give British investors an opportunity to own shares in the company.

We’re proud to be the first sightseeing network to introduce a 100% electric bus in London” and adds, “this marks another important step in the RATP Group’s commitment to energy transition. Its success is due to a strong partnership between the team at ‘The Original Tour London’ and four European manufacturers, including ZiehlAbegg which developed the electric powertrain system.”

Unvi is the world’s largest manufacturer of city tour buses with a reputation for custombuilt vehicles. The Spaniards have chosen experienced component manufacturers as partners: BMZ for the batteries, Ziehl-Abegg Automotive for the powertrain and SAV Studio for the system integration. The challenge posed by opentop, double-decker buses is enormous: since they don’t have a roof, it’s impossible to position any batteries on the top of the vehicle. “Since our drive unit is the most efficient in the world, the battery packs can be smaller than with any other motor concepts,” says Arnold. Notwithstanding the legal requirements, there are significant disadvantages with diesel sightseeing buses compared to electrically powered buses: because the constant starting and stopping puts a

Continental, TU Darmstadt develop machinelearning advanced driver assistance system In the fourth stage of the Proreta research project, technology company Continental and TU Darmstadt have developed a machine-learning vehicle system designed to support drivers in urban traffic and have installed it in a prototype. Data from radar sensors helps drivers to assess the traffic situation when turning left, entering a roundabout or at right-before-left intersections. Machine-learning has played a key role in the three-and-a-half-year research project. Algorithms create an always up-to-date driver profile based on a range of vehicle data, allowing them to adapt the driving maneuver recommendations given by the City Assistant System in line with the driving style. The task of the Proreta project was highly complex. “The goal of collaboration between our institutes and Continental during the course of Proreta 4 was to use adaptive systems as a mean of developing solutions that have not yet been addressed due to the lack of adaptability. The results of our work will help to further increase safety both within the vehicle and for other road users, says Professor Hermann Winner, Director of the Institute of Automotive Engineering at TU Darmstadt.

Acceleration, yaw rates, braking and lateral acceleration in particular give the algorithm an idea of what type of driver is behind the wheel. Extensive test drives with testers showed that the algorithms used in the City Assistant System allow conclusions to be drawn about the current driving style within three to five driving maneuvers. The system can therefore assign the driver to one or more clusters of driving profiles, meaning that the

Acting like a good passenger, an advanced driver assistance system must analyse the driver’s style of driving and, in turn, their subjective sense of safety or risk so that, in complex traffic situations, it can give the driver recommendations that are also met with a high degree of acceptance. The driving profile is created quickly and accurately on the basis of a machine-learning process. For this, a range of data recorded during journeys is evaluated.

66 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2018

City Assistant System can then offer highly personalized driving recommendations. Machine-learned algorithms are becoming increasingly common in vehicle systems. While the number of vehicle system units utilising artificial intelligence stood at 7 million in 2015, this figure is expected to increase to 225 million by 2025. Efficient machine-learned algorithms are mostly highly complex models that, in their raw form and like a black box, either are hard to interpret or cannot be interpreted at all by humans. This poses particular challenges for ensuring the reliability of advanced driver assistance systems, which is why a safety approval strategy has been developed as part of the algorithm selection process for advanced driver assistance systems. During the course of Proreta 4, various methods for reducing the number of test cases for learned algorithms were identified; these will now be subject to further research.

Continental enhances driver safety by eliminating forward blind spots Technology company Continental has developed a Virtual A-Pillar to help remove forward blind spots – making wide A-pillars virtually see-through. The front support pillars, often referred to as A-pillars, anchor the windshield and the beginning foundation of the vehicle’s roof. However, A-pillars have also been identified as visual obstructions for the driver. Over the years, A-pillars have expanded to improve rollover safety and meet more rigorous federal roof-crush standards. This trend poses an increased hazard to pedestrians and vulnerable road users easily obscured from the driver’s view. “Increasing the safety of all road users, from drivers to pedestrians, is the motivating force behind innovative Continental technologies like the Virtual A-Pillar,” said Dr. Karsten Michels, head of Systems & Technology in the Interior division at Continental, adding that “By pairing and implementing advanced technology in the vehicle, Continental has created a solution that eliminates the forward blind spots of the A-pillars, helping to reduce a critical safety hazard experienced by so many road users.”

VIRTUAL A-PILLAR PROVIDES DYNAMIC PERSPECTIVE OF THE VEHICLE ENVIRONMENT In some situations, depending on the pillar’s width, a linear distance of over 36 inches can end up being obstructed at just 12 feet from the pillar. This increases substantially as the distance from the vehicle grows. As a result, the design of the A-pillar is an important factor when trying to increase the driver’s forward field of view. Continental’s Virtual A-Pillar is designed to address the growing problem on vehicles that need widened front pillars to meet mandatory

safety testing. With new flexible OLED displays and advanced head tracking, Continental is bringing enhanced visibility to the driver’s view. Today, drivers are used to compensating for lack of forward vision by adjusting their position while driving. The Continental Virtual A-Pillar tracks these movements using an interior camera mounted just above the steering wheel. At the same time, Continental’s SurroundView camera, mounted on the vehicle’s exterior, feeds a live video of the vehicle’s external environment to the OLED displays embedded in the A-pillars. By tracking the driver’s head movements paired with the exterior live image, the Virtual A-Pillar offers a dynamic perspective for the driver, giving the driver an experience more like looking through an extended “window” rather than at a live video feed.

MORE SAFETY FOR VULNERABLE ROAD USERS “This new technology allows the driver to see pedestrians and other vehicles approaching from the left and right, which would have otherwise been blocked by the A-pillar,” Michels added. With the advancements of camera and display technology, Continental’s Virtual A-Pillar allows the driver to maintain a direct line of sight when turning left or right, providing additional safety for cyclists, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.

Audi and Umicore develop closed loop battery recycling Audi and Umicore have successfully completed phase one of their strategic research cooperation for battery recycling. The two partners are developing a closed loop for components of high-voltage batteries that can be used again and again. Particularly valuable materials are set to become available in a raw materials bank. Already before the start of the cooperation with Umicore in June 2018, Audi had analysed the batteries in the A3 e-tron plug-in hybrid car and defined ways of recycling. Together with the material technology experts, the car manufacturer then determined the possible recycling rates for battery components such as cobalt, nickel and copper. The result: In laboratory tests, more than 95 percent of these elements can be recovered and reused. The partners are now developing specific recycling concepts. The focus is on the so-called closed-loop approach. In such a closed cycle, valuable elements from batteries flow into new products at the end of their lifecycle and are thus reused. The Ingolstadt-based company is now applying this approach to the high-voltage batteries in the new Audi e-tron electric car. The aim is to gain insights into the purity of the recovered materials, recycling rates and the economic feasibility of concepts such as a raw materials bank. Security of supply and shorter delivery cycles are the goals.

Kia, Hyundai reveal solar charging system technology for vehicles Kia Motors and Hyundai Motor have announced plans to introduce ‘solar roof’ charging technology on select Hyundai Motor Group vehicles. Electricitygenerating solar panels will be incorporated into the roof or the hood of vehicles, and will support internal combustion, hybrid and battery electric vehicles with additional electrical power, increasing fuel efficiency and range. Hyundai Motor Group will launch the first generation of this technology into its vehicles after 2019 to help meet global regulations targets and improve vehicle fuel efficiency. The solar charging technology is being developed to support the vehicle’s main power source, improving mileage and reducing CO2 emissions. The system will have the capability to charge the batteries of eco-friendly electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as those of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, helping to improve fuel efficiency. Hyundai Motor Group is

currently in testing. It is designed to be applied to the hood and roof of eco-friendly battery electric vehicle models in order to maximize energy output.

HOW HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP SOLAR PANEL TECHNOLOGY WORKS

developing three types of solar roof charging systems: The first-generation system is for hybrid vehicles, while the secondgeneration technology brings a semi-transparent solar roof system to ICE vehicles. The third generation of the technology will see the introduction of a lightweight solar roof for battery electric vehicles. The first-generation system, which will be applied to hybrid models, is created out of a structure of silicon solar panels that are integrated into a standard car roof. This system is capable of charging 30 to 60 percent of the battery over the course of a normal day,

depending on weather conditions and other environmental factors. The second-generation semi-transparent solar roof will be applied to ICE vehicles, representing a world-first application for the technology. The semi-transparent technologies can be integrated with a panoramic sunroof, letting light through into the cabin, whilst charging the vehicle’s battery at the same time. Applying solar charging systems to ICE vehicles will help them comply with ever more stringent global environmental laws regulating CO2 emissions. The third-generation system, is

The solar charging system is composed of a solar panel, a controller and a battery. As the panel absorbs photons of light from the sun, it creates electronhole pairs in silicon cells, enabling current to flow and generating electricity. When a 100W solar panel is equipped, it can produce up to 100 Wh of energy (in ideal conditions: summer noon, 1000 W/m2 intensity of radiation). The controller features Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), which controls voltage and current to increase the efficiency of electricity harvested by the solar panel. This power is converted and stored in the battery, or utilized to decrease load on the vehicle’s alternating current (AC) generator, thereby increasing vehicle range.
