Coming to our print magazine, the July 2017 issue of Motown India carries review reports of some very important cars that include the new Jeep Compass, the new Volkswagen Tiguan, the face-lifted Skoda Octavia, among others. We have also reviewed the new Honda Cliq scooter, another innovative and practical two-wheeler for India’s urban as well as rural towns. We got a chance to visit the modern manufacturing plant of Honda Cars India in Tapukara in Rajasthan. SAIC to set up manufacturing facility in India Establishes MG Motor India SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, one of the biggest corporations in the world and the largest automobile giant in China, has announced its plan to enter the Indian automobile market through a fully-owned car manufacturing facility in the country. For the purpose of conducting its business in India, SAIC has established a fully-owned subsidiary, MG Motor India. In the meantime, former Managing Director of General Motors India Rajeev Chaba has been appointed as the President and Managing Director of MG Motor India. Chaba’s last assignment was as global COO in Vanguard Logistics, USA and as an operating partner of ManCapital, a UK based Private equity firm. P. Balendran who till recently worked as Vice President, Corporate Affairs, General Motors India, has been appointed as the Executive Director of MG Motor India. Balendran has joined MG Motor India after spending over 18 years in global automobile companies in senior positions. Ranked 46th in the Fortune Global 500 list, with an annual revenue of over US $ 100 Billion, SAIC Motor is in the process of finalising its manufacturing facility and is firming up its product strategy for the Indian market, details of which will be announced at a later stage. SAIC Motor’s vision for India is to deliver environment friendly mobility solutions under the iconic “MG” (Morris Garages) brand. As a new-age auto company focused on innovation and technology, the company offers various solutions and technological capabilities required in the development of ‘New Energy Vehicles’, to cater to the changing needs of global customers and the overall ecosystem. “The introduction of the iconic British Sports Car Brand ‘MG’ in India is an important part of SAIC Motor’s global strategy. They will now also be manufactured in India while conforming to global quality standards and aligning with the Indian regulations, emission norms and driving conditions. SAIC Motor adopts the global standard in developing high quality products in various markets where it is located across the globe including UK, USA, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Middle East, South East Asia, Thailand and Indonesia. SAIC Motor has also established its ‘Overseas Innovation Center’ in Silicon Valley, California. Over the years, both its MG and Maxus brands have respectively emerged as one of the fastest growing brands in UK, Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Thailand.
SAIC Motor’s recent launch of a breakthrough ‘internet car’ in collaboration with Alibaba in the ‘connected car space’ is a new milestone in the global automotive industry which has seen unprecedented success. “This was possible by integrating the premium technological resources through the company’s leading world-class supplier base,” the company said. MERCEDES-BENZ LAUNCHES LONG WHEELBASE E-CLASS 220 D After the successful market debut of the top ranging E 350 d diesel and the E 200 petrol, Mercedes-Benz India has launched the all new Long Wheelbase E 220 d. For the first time, the Indian market gets with the OM 654 an engine out of a new, ground-breaking family of engines from Mercedes-Benz, in the all new LWB E 220 d. The new E 220 d consumes around 13% less fuel and is lighter by 17% than its global predecessor. CAR NEWS NEW 6TH GENERATION VOLKSWAGEN POLO UNVEILED IN GERMANY German auto major Volkswagen has unveiled the 6th generation model of the Polo hatch. The new Polo has been completely redesigned and gets more room in the cabin along with more efficient engines. So far the Polo has sold more than 14 million units and is one of the most successful compact models from the German brand. VW is set to launch the Polo in European markets before the close of this year. India, however, may have to wait a while for the new Polo.
The new Polo looks sportier and mature in its new avtar. Volkswagen has also made it bigger than its predecessor from every dimension. The result, more space in the cabin for occupants and a significantly larger boot. The boot space has been increased from 280 litres to 351 litres. The new Polo will be made available across Europe this year post its launch. On offer are a range of Euro 6 engine which deliver from 64.3hp to 147.5hp.

LITHIUM URBAN TECHNOLOGIES TARGETS DELHI WITH ITS E-CABS Delhi, one of the most polluted cities of the world, has a reason to breathe easy. Lithium Urban Technologies, India’s first all electric solution to corporate needs has recognised Delhi as their newest market. Lithium uses only electric vehicles (primarily Mahindra E2Os) to transport employees. Lithium Urban Technologies would also be expanding to Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad. The company was founded in the year of 2015 by Sanjay Krishnan and ex-NASA scientist Ashwin Mahesh. Chetan Maini, the original founder of electric cars in India (Reva) recently joined in as a board member of Lithium Urban Technologies.

The motorcycle is powered by a new race bred 765cc engine that has a new level of power and torque, new state of the art technology, reworked suspension, brakes and tyres, aggressive new looks and class leading weight. It also comes with an all-new gull wing swing arm. The motorcycle has been developed from the celebrated race bred ‘Daytona’ engine and has more than 80 new parts across the range including new crank, pistons and Nikasil plated aluminium barrels and an increased bore and stroke. DUCATI INDIA BRINGS IN MONSTER 797, MULTISTRADA 950 First unveiled at the 2017 Ducati World Premiere, Ducati India launched the Monster 797 and the Multistrada 950. These motorcycles are the first of the five all-new motorcycles that are going to be launched in the country. The Monster 797’s air-cooled 803 cc Desmodue L-twin engine housed in the tubular Ducati Trellis frame is capable of delivering 75 Bhp at 8250 rpm and maximum torque of 69 Nm at 5,750 rpm. The Monster 797 engine also features 12,000 km maintenance intervals. Powering the Multistrada 950 is the 937cc Testastretta 11° engine that churns a maximum of 113 Bhp at 9,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 96.2 Nm at 7750 rpm. The instrument panel consists of a large LCD panel that displays the four riding modes – Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro, each of which gives the Multistrada 950 a distinctive personality. BIKE NEWS ROYAL ENFIELD COLLABORATES FOR 2 CUSTOM BUILDS AT FESTIVAL IN FRANCE Royal Enfield unveiled two new custom builds at the fifth edition of the Wheels and Waves festival, Europe’s landmark surfing and motorcycling event held in June 2017 in Biarritz, France. Royal Enfield participated in this event for the third time, displaying two exclusive renditions – Surf Racer and Gentleman Brat, along with its range of motorcycles and gear. The Wheels and Waves festival is a melting pot for all things around motorcycles, hipsters, customs, community, surf and sand, with a gathering of over 15000 visitors and participants over five days and four locations. Over the years the festival has become a bridge that connects the multifaceted world of motorcycles with skate and surf culture, through philosophy, music and style. At Wheels and Waves 2017, Royal Enfield unveiled its latest custom builds developed in collaboration with Sinroja Motorcycles, based in Leicester, UK. Surf Racer is Royal Enfield’s rendition of the Continental GT cafe racer inspired by the Sun and sand lifestyle, while the Gentleman Brat is a custom based motorcycle on Royal Enfield’s latest non-extreme adventure tourer, the Himalayan.
ROYAL ENFIELD COLLABORATES WITH CUSTOM BUILDERS FOR MOTORCYCLES Royal Enfield has collaborated with four custom builders across India in a bid to promote motorcycle personalisation. The list of customer builders includes - Inline Three, TNT Motorcycles, Bull City Customs and Bombay Custom Works. The popular Classic 500 and Continental GT models have been reworked in this collaboration which is also being celebrated by the introduction of a collection of motorcycle gear inspired by these custom builds. Royal Enfield clarified that this is purely a collaboration and that it is not selling the customized bikes. The tie-up with the designers is to promote the motorcycle customising in India. However, the company has launched T-shirts and Gear products which will be available at existing dealerships, company stores, exclusive gear stores (EGS), online gear store (OGS) shop-in-shop (SIS) and e-commerce portals Flipkart and Myntra.

BIKE NEWS KINETIC GROUP TIES UP WITH SWM After its successful tie up with Italian motorcycle major MV Agusta, India’s Motoroyale, the superbikes venture of the Kinetic Group has tied up with the second brand that will soon be launched in India, the legendary Italian SWM. SWM currently has as many as 12 two wheeled models on sale, ranging from 125 cc to 600 cc. Motoroyale will launch the SWM range in a stepwise manner starting end 2017 with the Superdual 650. The Superdual is the first 600cc on road as well as off road tourer in India. The SWM SuperDual is a four-stroke, singlecylinder 600 cc engine sourced from the Husqvarna TE 630 and manufactured in Italy. It gets the under-slung exhaust configuration which makes about 54 bhp of power and 53.5 Nm of torque. With an 18-litre fuel tank, long travel suspension, high ground clearance and dry weight of 186 kg, the SWM SuperDual promises all the features identified with an adventure motorcycle and will be India’s first on road- off road motorcycle ideal for touring as well.
APRILIA SHIVER 900, DORSODURO 900 LAUNCHED IN INDIA Aprilia has introduced the Shiver 900 and Dorsoduro 900. These superbikes will be available through Piaggio Group’s Motoplexes in Pune, Chennai, Kochi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad and will add to Aprilia’s existing superbikes portfolio of Tuono and RSV4. The bikes are now available with special introductory pricing on limited units until June 30th 2017 to encourage racing enthusiasts in the country. Equipped with a new 900 V-twin engine, the Aprilia Shiver projects maximum torque at any rpm. The design aesthetics of the bike have been revamped to include side covers on the fuel tank, side panels, tail fairing and front mudguard which highlights its sporty character. The mixed steel trellis and aluminium plates frame creates an extremely compact bike and enhances the riding experience of the discerning bikers. The refined mechanics and excellent chassis structure are set to make these bikes the best in class. The Shiver has an ultra-modern instrument cluster which comprises of a TFT technology display with a large 4.3” screen. It has the ability to adapt the background and font colours based on the conditions detected by the light sensor. Smartphones can also be connected through the AMP kit and all data related to the calls and audio files can be accessed.

HONDA LAUNCHES NEW CLIQ SCOOTER Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI) launched the new Cliq, a utilitarian scooter for the Indian masses. The Cliq gets special block pattern tyres which enable it to render more grip on patchy roads. The company has aimed to maximise the utility this scooter offers by providing more legroom with a flat footboard, generous underseat storage and an increase load carrying capacity. The Cliq is powered by Honda’s 110cc, single cylinder, air cooled BS-IV engine which puts out 7.9hp and 8.94Nm of torque. The Cliq has a kerb weight of just 102kgs thus giving it a good power to weight ratio. Honda has also equipped the Cliq with special block pattern tyres which are more durable and efficient in different weather conditions. The new Cliq will also get Honda’s Combi Brake System (CBS) with an Equiliser technology. The CBS reduces braking distance and improves balance. Honda has given the Cliq a unisex design making it comfortable to ride for both male and female riders. The automatic transmission in the Cliq is also said to have a low cost of ownership. The scooter will be made available across India in a stage wise manner. Price: 42,499 (ex-showroom Delhi).
ADVANCE BOOKINGS FOR DSK BENELLI 302R BEGINS DSK Motowheels and Italian superbike brand, Benelli have finally announced advance bookings for one of the mostawaited sports bikes of the year –DSK Benelli 302R. The full-faired sports bike will hit the road next month. The bookings can be made at any of the DSK Benelli showrooms located across the country. DSK Benelli 302R directly descends from the lineage of Tornado. DSK Benelli 302R comes loaded with a 300cc, in-line two cylinder, water-cooled, fourstroke engine. DSK Motowheels, a part of the DSK Group, was established in 2012. It has a CKD plant in Maharashtra.

I
s the all-new Jeep Compass going to be the knight in shining armour for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles India? We checked it out in the jungles of Goa to make up our mind. The Jeep Compass is being offered in three variants – Sport, Latitude and Limited. The Jeep Compass comes with two powertrain options, 1.4-litre Multi-air petrol and a 2-litre Multijet II diesel engine. While the petrol model has an option of a 6-speed manual transmission and a 7-speed Dual Dry Clutch Technology Automatic, the diesel model is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Interior trim levels, alloy wheel designs and a few other features distinguish these different variants. All variants have 60:40 split rear seats. Two front airbags and a reverse camera with sensor are standard in all variants, along with safety features like ABS, hill-start assist, ESP and electronic roll mitigation. We got to drive the diesel Jeep Compass Limited 4X4 variant
EXTERNAL DESIGN AND FEATURES
The Jeep Compass looks like a baby Grand Cherokee with its seven slot grille with chrome rings. If you see its side profile, the silhouette reminds you of the Ranger Rover Evoque. The vehicle comes with Bi-Xenon headlamps, fog lamps, DRLs and LED tail lamps. The square wheel arches, the ribbed roof in a dark shade, different from the body colour, roof rails and an integrated rear spoiler along with a high mounted stop light give the Jeep Compass a very sporty look. Incidentally, the Jeep Compass is built on the same platform as the Jeep Renegade but with a longer wheelbase. The vehicle sits on smart 225/60

R17 Firestone tyres that are mounted on a five spoke alloy wheel with distinct double fins each. Overall, the vehicle looks very boxy with strong attractive design lines. What it misses is a sunroof and rain sensor wipers.
INTERNAL DESIGN AND FEATURES
Step into the Jeep Compass Limited 4X4 and you are pleasantly surprised by the ski-grey Mckinley leather upholstery with ruby red stitching. That looks kind of cool. There is lot of space inside, both for the driver and the rear passengers. Boot space is also more than adequate which can be further increased by dropping down the rear seats. The dual tone interior comes with a black front fascia which is quite soft to feel. The centre console boasts of an Uconnect 7 inches touchscreen with loads of piano black finish surrounding it. On either side of it are the AC vents. Just below that are the Volume/Power knob and the radio tuner knob with Browse and scroll functions. The infotainment system comes with six speakers and has Android Auto and Apple Car play. There is also Bluetooth audio streaming. A ‘Screen Off’ button once pressed blanks out the screen and by simply touching the screen you can bring it back to life. The Mute button, the Hazard warning button and the Parking Off button make up the rest of the functions in the space between these two knobs. Below these are the AC controls with an “Off’ button to switch off your aircon. There are also dual climate zones and a climate control. On the floor console is a large black knob that once touched, engages your 4X4 lock. By rotating it, you can choose the different drive modes: Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud for driving on different terrains. By its side are the USB slot and an Aux in outlet, besides a 12V DC power outlet. The manual gear lever has a large silver colour knob head for easy grip. An arm rest for the driver is also there with a bit of storage space in it. The car has

enough small cubby holes for your bottles and other items. There is also a large glove box. The chunky steering wheel is all leather wrapped, again with the red stitching. Though the seats are all plush and comfortable there are no electric adjustments for any of them. Controls on the steering wheel in the Limited variant are limited to the left side for changing the driver information on the 3.5 inch graphic display, while the right side has only blanks. Maybe in the future when this vehicle comes with an automatic version, it may have the cruise control buttons on the right side of the steering wheel. Surprisingly, there are more controls hidden behind the steering wheel on both the sides. The one on the right controls the volume of the audio system while a tiny centre button is the mute control. Behind the steering wheel on the left are the controls for changing the radio stations and the centre button there helps change the modes. The instrument cluster has a conventional tachometer and a speedometer. With a manual transmission and manual settings for your seats, I expected a manual lever for the hand brake, but the Jeep Compass comes with an Electric Brake Park. I felt this could have been done away with for some further cost cutting.
ENGINE & PERFORMANCE
The 2 litre diesel engine produces 171 HP and 350 Nm of peak torque. With the Jeep Active Drive, the Jeep Compass is an absolute thrill on all kinds of terrain because it’s here that it comes out with flying colours, showing off its four-wheel drive capability. It is equipped with Selec-Terrain Traction Management System. The SUV comes with a Driveline Disconnect Technology (DDT) which essentially disconnects the drive that goes to the rear wheels automatically when not required. This obviously helps in fuel saving and assists safer driving. This five-seater SUV also has Frequency Selective Damping

(FSD). This technology provides variable damping that adjusts to road undulations. These shock absorbers use a special valve inside to enable an optimal ride at both high and low frequencies. For off-road experiences, we drove into the thick jungles of Goa, a few kilometres beyond the Natravali Wildlife sanctuary. The Jeep Compass behaved like the Lord of the Jungles. It simply went over all kinds of obstacles with immense ease. It was raining heavily and the path in the jungle had turned to thick slush. I turned the drive mode to Mud and gently stepped on the accelerator. The SUV meandered its way through the slushy jungle path and refused to be bogged down by the steep inclines and drops. I also got an opportunity to wade through a shallow stream. It was pure Jeep thrill. A day earlier, I had driven the Jeep Compass on both tarred roads and rocky paths when it was not raining. At high speeds it held its weight so well and during braking, it stopped almost instantly without a whimper. With minimal body roll and great stability, Jeep Compass is an absolute delight when it comes

to driving it. The vehicle behaves so perfectly on and off the road.

The Jeep Compass has more than 50 safety and security features. he Volkswagen Tiguan aims to carve a space for itself in the premium SUV segment where the likes of the BMW X1, Mercedes GLA and Audi Q3 exist. But does it have the ‘Eye of the tiger’ or the thrill of the fight? Does it rise up to the challenge of its rivals? I find out.

Volkswagen has built in a lot of comfort and convenience features which have been neatly tucked away. You get 3-zone automatic air conditioning, electrically adjustable driver seat with a memory function for the seat position and the ORVMs, self sealing tyres, automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers, keyless entry with push button start/stop, electrically operated tailgate release and any more handy features. Alongside improving comfort and convenience Volkswagen is also catering to the safety by offering customers with features like pedestrian protection - reactive hood wherein the hood gets raised by a few inches in the case of a frontal impact with a pedestrian, thus making the hood act as a buffer cushion for the pedestrian. Other safety features include driver and passenger curtain and front side

2.0 litre, turbocharged, 4 cylinder diesel engine which churns out approximately 140 horses and 340Nm of torque. The engine has been mated to a slick 7-speed DSG transmission. The power delivery is smooth and feels linear. Driving this SUV around town or on highways is quite a lot of fun thanks to seamless shifts of the gears. Even if you want to get going in a hurry or want to milk the engine for more performance, you have the option of a sports mode which allows you to shift gears manually if you please. Adding a little more flavour to the sporty appeal are paddle shifters. Take the Tiguan out on a highway and it will not disappoint you. Even if you wish to take the road less travelled, the Tiguan has an AWD (All Wheel Drive) setup tucked under its belt. The 4MOTION AWD enables the driver with adequate torque distribution and www.motownindia.com
enhanced off-road capability. Also on offer are different drive modes which can be selected via a dial on the centre floor panel to tackle varying terrain. The suspension setup on the new Tiguan leans slightly towards the stiffer side. It gets a McPherson strut with lower transverse link, stabiliser bar in the front and a multi-link suspension in the rear. The ride is smooth over most terrain and the suspension gobbles up undulations rather easily. The in-cabin comfort as well is at par with other premium offerings. Volkswagen has bolted on disc brakes in the front and rear. The braking is progressive and its efficiency inspires confidence even at high speeds. The overall performance on and off the road is quite admirable but certain aspects were a letdown. The steering did
feel a little wooden and while driving off road it would have been an advantage to get more feedback from the wheels.
VERDICT This swanky new SUV from the stables of Volkswagen has got the ‘eye of the tiger’. In every department the new Volkswagen Tiguan is either as good as its rivals or is even better when considering the features and safety elements that have been incorporated.

koda Auto India has finally given the Octavia a facelift. The outgoing model was largely popular due to its neat no-nonsense design. The new model gets a more bold and unique look. Skoda has not introduced any updates to the powertrain but the cabin has been tweaked to look a bit more contemporary than before. We check out the changes.
EXTERIOR DESIGN & FEATURES
To look at, the Octavia still holds most of those design elements that gave it a dapper character. Clean straight lines that boast of sophistication and panache are what define the profile of the Octavia. The front fascia has received a major overhaul and now features a quad headlamp design. While the previous design was simpler and more functional, the new quad setup does add a bit of class and flavour to the new Octavia. The split headlamp seamlessly integrates with the chiseled front sitting between the butterfly grille which gets glossy black inserts. The inner lamps have been designed to complement the front grille and the outer ones look sharp and definitive. Skoda has also included an adaptive LED headlamp setup on the new Octavia. The LED lamps cast a decent beam and also get an auto high beam function. Skoda has also touched up the front bumper with the addition of a neat looking chrome strip running between the fog lamps which are now a shade sleeker. The bonnet also has been redone to add a touch of macho appeal and looks bolder than before. The side profile more or less retains the design DNA of the outgoing model but gets a set of newly designed 16 inch alloys. A seamlessly

subtle shoulder line running from front to back gives the side profile of the vehicle a butch feel. Moving over to the rear, a set of reworked tail lamps along with the bumper get minor updates. The overall design and character of the new Octavia is essentially bolder than before.

Skoda has made a significant improvement in the cabin which comes in the form of an 8.0 inch touch screen infotainment setup. The change is visually evident and lends the dash a more premium feel. Skoda has even done away with the push buttons that surrounded the previous touch screen unit and replaced them with touch enabled ones. The functionality of the touch setup is quite good and it proves to be quite easy to operate. The infotainment setup gets Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink connectivity. Skoda has also added features such as a park assist and ambient lighting for the top variant. Other updates include a smarter looking steering wheel and a redesigned instrument cluster. The interior colour combination of beige and black gives the cabin a modish appeal. The cabin is spacious and comfy with plenty of features to ensure the utmost comfort and convenience one desires in a saloon of this class. While testing out the park assist function we were quite surprised to find how handy it is in day to day use. The system engages almost seamlessly and the driver needs only to put in minimal effort. Another handy feature that has been incorporated on the new Octavia is a driver attention assist feature which reads the driver’s inputs from the steering and will give a warning signal if

The Czech company has not introduced any changes to the powertrains. The saloon gets a choice of three engines - a 1.4L TSI, 1.8L TSI and a 2.0L TDI. The 2.0 litre diesel mill churns out 140.8hp and 320Nm of torque while the 1.4L TSI puts out 147hp and 250Nm. The 1.8L TSI petrol powered variant which I drove delivered a top of the line 177hp and 250Nm. The engine comes mated solely to a 7-speed DSG gearbox which is exceptionally smooth and equally thrilling. 26 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2017
Peak power of 177hp comes in high in the band but a peak torque of 250Nm is readily available quite low in the rpm range (1250-5000rpm) thus delivering a very sporty performance on demand. I also got to sample the 2.0L diesel which is more efficient than its petrol counterparts. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed DSG gearbox. While the 1.8L TSI petrol delivers 14.7kmpl the 2.0L TDI diesel delivers 19.3kmpl. The diesel mill is punchy and proves to be a lot of fun on long open straights. The rear track has been increased by 30mm on the 1.8L TSI petrol which has
a multi-link axle. The 2.0L TDI and 1.4L TSI which get a compound link crank axle on the rear track see an increase of 20mm. The increase has seemingly improved the control the driver gets over these vehicles. The Octavia is essentially very comfortable to drive thanks to a very well engineered suspension setup. The suspension also gives the driver great control over this vehicle making it a top pick for those who don’t want to be driven. With a lineup of just the right safety features and driver aides, the Skoda Octavia proves to be safe and sporty at the same time. www.motownindia.com

ake a savory bowl full of butter chicken and add a dash of cayenne pepper, the result is one saucy dish. That is exactly what Toyota has done with their Innova Crysta and dubbed it the Innova Touring Sport. The reworked MPV is quite jaunty in its appearance and can certainly grab a lot more attention than the Crysta. The Toyota Innova Touring Sport may not sit well with everyone but in my book it is raffish and quite desirable. I had the Touring Sport in the Wildfire red colour which looked dapper. The colour subtly underscores the changes adding a touch of class to the MPV. The facade sports smoked chrome headlamps and a sportier looking bumper. Subtle hints of chrome have been added and the front bumper gets spoilers with chrome ornamentation. The side profile looks a lot smarter with the addition of 16 inch matt black 5-twin spoke alloys, black cladding around the wheel arches and a skirting with chrome inserts. In the rear, hints of chrome on the rear bumper spoiler and black garnishing on the boot lid add a bit of zing. Toyota has also branded the Touring Sport with a different badge to ensure a clear distinction. As for the interiors, Toyota has offered a unique redwood pattern on the dash, red illumination for the combimeter, red stitching on the seats as well as the console box and black wood finish on the door panels and steering wheel. The interior design of the Innova Touring Sport is quite like the Innova Crysta. However, the subtle cosmetic changes do add hints of panache and style. The interiors have also been made extremely functional with a host of handy features on offer.

Most of the features which have been incorporated in the Innova Touring Sport improve the comfort and convenience of passengers. Features include an automatic climate control with cool start, 8-way power adjustable driver seat, a cooled glove box, cruise control, seatback tables and multiple connectivity options for the 8-inch infotainment setup. The versatility of the Innova Touring Sport is essentially in its ability to stand out in a crowd but it does not really offer any major distinctions on the features front. That being said the Touring Sport does come fully loaded with almost all the essential features required by us today. Even in terms of safety Toyota has added 7 airbags, ABS with EBD and BA, Vehicle Stability Control, Hill Start Assist Control, GOA Body, Back Monitor and Sonar. Toyota is offering the new Innova Touring Sport with the 2.7litre petrol engine and two diesel engine options which come in the form of 2.4L and 2.8L power houses. The engines are the same as the ones found on the Innova Crysta. The petrol 2.7 litre engine will come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed automatic sequential shift transmission. The 2.4L diesel on the other hand will only come mated to a

5-speed manual transmission while the 2.8L diesel mill will only get the 6-speed sequential shift option. I had the top end 2.8L automatic with me. This engine is good for 171.5bhp which comes in at 3400rpm and it can produce a peak torque of 360Nm from as low as 1200rpm going up all the way to 3400rpm. The best way I can describe the performance of this engine is as a continuous surge of power. The Innova Touring Sport is quite thrilling to drive. It combines a softly sprung suspension, a comfortable steering setup and great ergonomics along with a powerful performance to become one of the best MPVs money can buy. hat happens when you mix utility with style, rural with urban or luxury with low price? You are cooking your way towards a ‘mass entertainer’ that is bound to Cliq with the all kinds of people. No, no, that was not a typo erro, I was actually referring to Honda’s latest utility based scooter by the name of Cliq. Tagging it as ‘Bade kaam ki cheez’ Honda has built it with the aim of catering to all sections of people in India at an affordable price, besides, of course providing a whole host of utilities. The Honda Cliq is in fact the most affordable 110cc automatic scooter you can buy in the country as of now. Let’s see if this mass entertainer has what it takes to be a hit at the automotive box office!
DESIGN & STYLE The Honda Cliq is as distinctive in appearance as the Honda Navi. You can actually see a lot of design cues being carried from the Navi to the Cliq in things like the paint job, the handlebar, rearview mirror design and even the distinctive circular extrusion on the body. The tall stance upfront with the headlamp integrated into the front fascia kind of reminds me of the fancy looking scooters you see in foreign countries and to some extent the legendary top tier Africa Twin from Honda. All in all, the looks are surely contemporary and will appeal to teens and their parents alike. The instrument cluster is simple and shows you your speed, distance covered and also the amount of fuel left. The fuel gauge was missing in Honda’s previous budget offering, the Navi. A closer look at the scooter and you will notice that there are these fin-like indentions that can be seen on either sides of the meter console, front and rear as well. Cliq will be available in four different colour schemes all of

which are full of life and one can opt for the Designer version which comes with body graphics that surely enhance the looks of the scooter and would likely appeal to teenagers.
ENGINE & PERFORMANCE One look at the spec sheet and you will realise that the Cliq is quite similar to the Activa, Dio and Navi. This is because it also comes with Honda’s HET 110cc, air cooled, 4 stroke BS IV complaint engine. But due to its lighter kerb weight of 102kgs it is able to squeeze in a little more from the engine giving a power output of 7.9hp @ 7000rpm and a maximum torque of 8.94Nm @ 5500rpm. While the scooter performs well and can get you to speeds above 60kmph easily, the acceleration does not feel as punchy as the Navi. In my short ride, I was able to take it up to 82kmph which is just one unit shy of the claimed 83kmph top speed. So for a light weight person with no baggage the claimed 83kmph is easy to reach. However, if you add in more weight, expect the top speed figure to dip as well. The light weight allows the scooter to be extremely nimble and change lanes at the slightest of inputs. That combined with the compact proportions makes it a great choice for city usage. While the scooter felt at ease even at high speeds, it did rumble at speeds below 25kmph. The 3.5 litre fuel tank could also pose to be an inconvenience for some despite a mileage of about 60kmpl. 34 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2017

There are plenty of things in the Cliq that led to Honda calling it a ‘bade kaam ki cheez’, the first one being the 10inch tubeless tyres with a block pattern. This means that you do not have to look for a puncture guy every now and then and with the immense grip from these tyres, you can tread paths that other scooters might have some problem with. I got to
ride it over some sandy patches and I definitely felt that these tyres do a great job of sticking to the ground. Another feature that I really appreciated was the Combi Brake System with Equaliser. While the brakes you get on both the tyres are your normal 130mm drum brakes, the addition of CBS really makes a world of difference. With CBS you can engage both the front and rear brakes by depressing the left brake and with the Equaliser feature, an equal amount of braking force is sent to both the wheels allowing you to come to a halt almost instantly without losing control of the scooter or skidding. Even in panic braking the scooter felt very much in control. There are some features in the Honda Cliq that would translate into ease of use for owners who are not technically sound when it comes to maintenance. These include the maintenance free battery and the viscous filter that needs no cleaning. You only need to change it post 16,000 kms. The scooter also comes with an auto headlamp unit which has now become mandatory in all two wheelers. Just like the Navi, this scooter also gets options for a whole lot of accessories including a front windshield, rear load carrier, floor mounted storage box, mobile charger under the seat and more.
VERDICT The Honda Cliq will appeal to those who are in need of a budget friendly scooter for their daily business commutes. For those looking forward to giving their kid his/her first two-wheeler ride, this new scooter just might Cliq with them!

Recently we got our hands on two portable Bluetooth speakers, the Zebronics Amazer and the Ambrane BT-8000. Both these are audio solutions that pack quite a punch with their 10W output. They are also compact enough to be carried around. Although the box price of the products differs by almost Rs 1,000, you can get them both for about Rs 2,000 in the market or on online stores. SOUND Both speakers excel when it comes to audio output but the Amazer wins the sound volume war by a slight lead. Yes, there is distortion experienced at the maximum volume but even at a controlled level the Amazer was louder and produced more bass compared to the tamed sound of the BT-8000.
This one goes straight away to the BT-8000 due to its elegant black facade. Even to touch, the material is soft yet feels sturdy and long lasting. The Amazer, in comparison, falls a little flat with its much lighter colour tone and a less than conventional design. Although one must give the Amazer some credit as it stands against what I personally consider one of the best looking Bluetooth speakers.
BATTERY LIFE The Amazer has a 1,200mAh battery while the BT-8000 gets a larger 3600mAh battery. So if music on the go is what you are looking for, then the BT-8000’s 7-hour playback time would sound much more reasonable than the Amazer’s 2 hours playback time.
FEATURES The BT-8000 comes with a built-in microphone allowing you to receive calls. However I feel that the amount of customisation you get for the lights on the Amazer outweighs this calling feature. You can use a mobile app to really dive deep into customising the colour and behaviour of the lights in the Amazer, while on the BT-8000 you are stuck with the blue and white light and no control on the lights whatsoever.
VERDICT Both the Zebronics Amazer and the Ambrane BT-8000 stack up very well against each other and offer great value for money in their own sense. In the end the deciding factor would depend on what you, the user, would like from their speaker.

JIVI SUMO T3000 REVIEW & BATTERY TEST PRICE `1,499 We often reminisce about the good old days when our Nokia feature phones seemed to last for days on a single charge. Frantically looking for a power socket was not the first thing we did after going home. Jivi launched their T3000 Sumo feature phone to deal with this problem and added a rather huge 3,600mAh battery . The company claims that the phone has a standby time of 51 days! So obviously we had to test that out and find the actual reality behind the matter. To test the device’s battery life, I charged it to 100pc and then used it as my main device for calling and that way it lasted me just a little over a month, 32 days to be precise. So it is fair to say that the company’s 51 day standby claim is very legitimate. One thing to note, however, is that the charger bundled with the device is a normal charger and not a fast charger and takes about 7 hours to charge the mobile from 0 to 100pc. So with the big question out of the way let’s look at the rest of the device. I was actually quite pleased to see the display being 2.8 inches in size. Combined with the pleasing blue tone, this display is large enough to read any kind of text easily. The overall looks of the device are pleasing, especially with the rounded edges. The keys up-front are decently big and easy to press. However, one must note that with the big display, the overall size of the mobile also increases. The T3000 Sumo is almost as tall as any smartphone with a 5.0 inch display and you will definitely feel the bulkiness of the device in your pocket.

Just below the camera is a flashlight which can also come in handy as a torchlight that you can toggle by long pressing the ‘0’ key. The camera quality is not much to write home about but despite that Jivi has packed in a lot of features like continuous shot, brightness setting, contrast setting, filters and even white balance adjustment. The Jivi T3000 Sumo definitely lived up to our expectations in terms of battery life and surprised us with its rather premium looks. This mobile will appeal to a lot of people who want a second device just for the purpose of calling or for people looking to buy a simple yet functional device for their children or grandparents so that they can always stay in touch. or once the little boy inside me took over as I stood there giggling like a lad out to play a prank on people. There was no one inside the beautifully designed BMW 730Ld M Sport that stood in the middle of a deserted road with a just a handful of curious onlookers. I was testing the Remote Controlled Parking feature of the car. I stood close to the car and fiddled with the remote display key which lets you know different information about your 7-Series via a small LCD screen. As onlookers stared at me wondering what I was up to, I started the car through the remote and then lo and behold, it moved forward on its own as I walked along with it. The little key also allowed me to drive it in reverse. It was as though I was playing with a remote controlled toy car, the size of a 7 series. Onlookers could not believe their eyes. Not many realised that this feature is meant to get rid of your woes of parking into tight spaces. Is this BMW 730Ld M Sport the holy grail of technology, I asked myself as I stepped into the uber cabin of the car? As I took the driver’s seat the infotainment screen displayed the message “Welcome Joshua”. That was just the beginning. An arsenal of hi-tech features lay in wait to be discovered by me and I was as curious and excited as a little boy when he steps into a toy shop for the first time in his life.

From the seat massage function to changing the cabin temperature or the ambient lighting, it can all be controlled by the passenger via this tab which can also be released and held in your palm. In fact the level of convenience which BMW is offering on the new 7-Series is unparalleled. Even blinds for privacy are motorised and open or close at just the touch of a button. This heady concoction of technology already had me feeling woozy but there was so much more to explore and the list seemed to be endless. BMW has also added a choice of Ambient Fragrances which can be selected by the passenger through the tab interface or by the driver.

#BMW730LDMSPORT Come to think of it, the people at BMW have managed to seamlessly integrate technology with the overall functionality of this saloon. It all comes together neatly with sublime ergonomics and ease of operation. Like a cherry on the cake, the German auto giant has also integrated gesture controls which allows the driver to control different functions and shortcuts of the infotainment setup using hand gestures. So to turn the volume up or down all I needed to do was make a hand gesture of rotating a knob clockwise or counterclockwise respectively. All of this technology bundled together so well in my book would simply be a benchmark to work up towards by the rest of the world.

This saloon is powered by a 2993cc, 6 cylinder diesel engine which turns 265hp at 4000rpm and whips up a beefy 620Nm of torque from 2000-2500rpm. The engine has been mated to an 8-Speed Steptronic Sport Automatic Transmission. To drive this 7-Series feels powerful and sporty. It can accelerate from standstill to a 100kmph in just 6.2 seconds. While it does appear to be graceful and elegant let not its looks deceive you, the 7-Series M Sport is devilishly quick and agile. It also gets a host of handy driver aides like Corner Braking Control, Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Traction Control all of which make the saloon a lot safer and easier to drive.

B
elieve it or not, not a single unbranded local helmet is dependable. Motown India conducted a simple yet decisive test to check the strength of several new local helmets vis-a-vis new branded Indian ones. Several branded affordable new helmets from leading and popular Indian brands Steelbird, Studds and Vega were pitted against a range of new unbranded local helmets. A sledgehammer weighing more than 6.6 kilograms was used to slam the helmets from a height of seven feet. The results were shocking. Not a single local helmet survived the sledgehammer test, while all the new branded helmets absorbed the sledgehammer hits. But what is equally shocking is the fact that there are hundreds and thousands of illegal and unauthorised stores selling unbranded helmets across the country and nothing is being done to stop their production and sale. Moreover, educated and uneducated two-wheeler riders and their pillions in the country are knowingly and unknowingly buying these unbranded helmets to save themselves from a petty traffic fine of a few hundred rupees, throwing all caution to the winds when it comes to their safety. While branded helmet prices start at around Rs 1000 or so, the local unbranded ones are available for as little as Rs 150 or so onward. Many of these local and unbranded helmets even carry the BIS government quality standards, thereby making a mockery of all safety and legal norms.

But before we go any further it is important to understand a bit about branded helmets. Like the egg that cracks open to eventually take the shape of either an omelette or just a sunny side up, our heads too can crack up when you fall off a bike or meet with an unfortunate accident. It is here that helmets play an important role in saving your skull from a fatal injury. So irrespective of age, whether you are on a cycle, or skiing down a mountain, or skating or riding a motorised two-wheeler, the point to note here is that helmets are a must. IS 4151 is the standard mark for an Indian helmets for twowheeler riding and is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made there under. Mind you, the helmets covered by this

standard are not intended for high-speed competitive events. Wearing a decent helmet makes riding a two-wheeler a lot more fun because it protects you from dust, insects, wind noise and even the windblast. It also goes a long way in reducing rider fatigue. Helmets are built to withstand certain falls. They are supposed to be strong, should absorb shock and eventually save the head from fatal accidents. When you are wearing a helmet during a fall or crash, the force of impact is distributed over the surface of the helmet, rather than concentrated on the head.
LIFE OF A HELMET AND ITS BUILD
Experts say a motorcycle helmet generally has a life of around five years or around three years if used regularly. You need to keep it clean and even wear a balaclava to prevent the helmet inner linings being damaged. Four basic components work together to provide protection in the motorcycle helmet: an outer shell; an impact-absorbing liner; the comfort padding; and a good retention

system. What we see first is the outer shell, usually made from some family of fibre-reinforced composites or thermoplastics like polycarbonate. This is tough stuff, yet it’s designed and intended to compress when it hits anything hard. Inside the shell is the equally important impact-absorbing liner, usually made of expanded polystyrene. Both the shell and the liner compress if hit hard, spreading the forces of impact throughout the helmet material. The more impact-energy deflected or absorbed, the less there is of it to reach your head and brain and do damage. Some helmet shells delaminate on impact while others may crack and break. These are ways a helmet acts to absorb shock. The helmet has done its job and needs to be replaced. The comfort padding is the soft foam-andcloth layer that sits next to your head. This padding keeps your head comfortable and in some helmets, this padding can even be taken out for cleaning. The retention system, or chin strap, is one piece that keeps the helmet on your head in a crash. You have to strap the helmet or else it would be flung off in a crash, serving no purpose.

#HELMETS RESULTS OF THE SLEDGEHAMMER TEST
The sledgehammer was first used to hit a local helmet, one that is usually worn by pillion riders as well as riders, especially women, in India. This was not a full mask one. The moment the sledgehammer came in contact with the top of the helmet, it simply crashed through the skull, thereby exposing its fragile shell. It was like slamming your fist on a raw egg. This happened for all the local helmets that were used for the test. Some of the local helmets fraudulently carried the BIS mark. The sledgehammer simply crashed through the helmet, smashing it into pieces. But when it came to the three branded helmets, the results were very different. The branded helmets from Vega, Steelbird and Studds simply absorbed the massive force of the sledgehammer during the crash test. This characteristic of a helmet is the one which saves lives of people during an accident involving a two-wheeler. In fact, each of the branded helmets received at least three separate blows with the sledgehammer and the helmets kept absorbing the shocks. In short, while each of the new
local unbranded helmets tore apart in a single blow of the sledgehammer, the new helmets from Steelbird, Studds and Vega withstood at least three blows of the sledgehammer and absorbed all the shocks while retaining their original shape. The sledgehammer test goes to prove that local unbranded helmets stand no chance when it comes to shocks it receives during a fall or a crash. These need to be banned completely by the government authorities.

Ricciardo wins in Baku in a chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo was the surprise winner in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on June 25, 2017 as chaos dominated a large part of the race. But amidst the chaos, rookie Lance Stroll of Williams took his maiden podium for his team, coming in third while Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas stood second. Among the big names, championship leader Sebastian Vettel beat Lewis Hamilton to fourth place. This is despite the fact that he was penalised for dangerous driving as he had hit his Mercedes rival Hamilton’s car from behind the safety car. For the spectators, it was an afternoon of non-stop drama at the Baku City Circuit. At one stage in the race, Ricciardo had an early pit stop to have debris cleared from his brakes which led him to drop to 17th place. When the safety car was deployed for the first time after the 13th lap, it was Hamilton who was leading, with Vettel of Ferrari behind him. By then Daniil Kvyat had to deal with a broken Toro Rosso car. After the race resumed, just three laps later, the two cars of Force India collided because Esteban Ocon made an aggressive Turn 2 pass on team mate Sergio Perez. The safety car was deployed and the debris had to be cleaned. Eventually, for Force India, Esteban Ocon came in sixth in the race while his teammate Sergio Perez had to retire. Daniel Ricciardo. Valentino Rossi rallies to win Dutch Grand Prix No. 46 Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), referred to as the “Doctor” raced his way to another spectacular win, his 115th, in the Motul TT Assen, in the Netherlands. The nine-time World Champion completed a challenging weekend due to mixed conditions with a superb win, giving him the longest winning career through all classes, spread over 20 years and 313 days. The race was truly spectacular since only six hundredths of a second was the distance between victory and podium, as Rossi just headed Danilo Petrucci (Octo Pramac Racing) over the line. Reigning Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) won a three-way fight for third to complete the rostrum in another close contest, beating Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) by 0.042 at the flag. Teammate Maverick Vinales fought his way up from eleventh on the grid and was heading towards the leading group, but his efforts ended in a DNF after an unlucky fall. Valentino Rossi. Mahindra pitstop confusion leads to Buemi win It was an unfortunate second race for Mahindra Racing as winner of the first race in Berlin eprix Felix Rosenqvist had to be content with just the second place (a result of a pit stop confusion), while another Mahindra Racing podium entry Nick Heidfeld was placed tenth. Sebastien Buemi of Renault e.dams extended his lead in the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship to 32 points after picking up his 12th career win in the all-electric single-seater series. However, the Renault e.dams driver was not first across the line around the revamped Tempelhofring airfield circuit, but when on-the-road winner Felix Rosenqvist was given a 10-second penalty for an unsafe release in the pits, he was there to pick up the pieces. Buemi was handed the winner’s trophy by Formula E super fan James Harmon. After taking his maiden win in the previous day’s race, Rosenqvist was once again the man to beat in Berlin. Porsche wins 2017 Le Mans race, its 19th overall
In a race that was full of close calls and heart aches, the #2 Porsche 919 Hybrid driven by Earl Bamber (NZ), Timo Bernhard (DE) and Brendon Hartley (NZ) won for the 19th time at the Circuit des 24 Heures. The second and third places went to to two LMP2s Orecas fielded by Jackie Chan DC Racing (#38) and Vaillante Rebellion (#13). The 85th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans saw 258,500 spectators witnessing the record 19th victory for Porsche. Toyota continued with its bad luck, as it did in the 2016 Le Mans race, when the three Toyota TS050 Hybrids failed to register a win. Though they were in the lead in the beginning of the race, the #7 Toyota (Conway/Kobayashi/Sarrazin) and the #9 (Lapierre/ Kunimoto/Lopez) retired before the halfway stage due to a mechanical issue for the #7 and a race incident for the #9. Porsche too had its share of bad luck when #1 Jani/Lotterer/Tandy took control in the ninth hour. The car was heading towards victory with less than four hours to go but suddenly the car ground to a halt in the Mulsanne Straight and announced its retirement a few minutes later. Now it was for the #2 Porsche 919 Hybrid to fight it out and the crew actually fought back from 55th place and came a winner. The remaining Toyota, the #8, finished second in class but in 9th place overall.

H
onda Cars India’s “Make in India” initiative is beginning to pay rich dividends not only in its car business but also in its car parts business. A visit to one of its plants in Rajasthan clearly indicated that the Japanese car maker has become a formidable force in the car parts business with many critical parts being exported to several advanced countries. Exports of these components and parts which stood at a mere Rs 443 crore in 2013-14 has jumped to Rs 1140 crore in 2016-17. This is despite the fact that a lacklustre 2016-17 financial year saw domestic sales of its cars plummeting by 18.09 per cent to 157,313 units (as per SIAM records). This meant that the company’s two plants in India, one in Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh and the other in Tapukara in Rajasthan had to operate at levels much below their installed capacity. Both the plants have an installed capacity of 120,000 units per annum each. The Tapukara plant capacity can be scaled up to 180,000 units based on requirements. Production at the Greater Noida plant
in Uttar Pradesh started in 1998 and today models like the CR-V, City, Amaze and Brio are made here. The 400 acres Tapukara plant situated in Rajasthan’s Alwar district began production in 2008 in phase I with making of body panels and engine components. In phase II which began in 2014, the company started its car assembly operations. Current models which are being made here include the City, WR-V, Jazz and BR-V. Till March 31, 2017, the company invested Rs 5441 crore in the plant. As of May 31, 2017 the company employed 5901 people.
LARGEST MANUAL TRANSMISSION MANUFACTURING FACILITY FOR HONDA But at Tapukara, it’s not just about cars, but also about critical components meant for domestic as well as global consumption. This plant is incidentally the largest manual transmission manufacturing facility of Honda Motors globally, exporting to nine countries -UK, Turkey, Thailand, China, Indonesia, Canada, America, Brazil and America. For transmissions, the company does in-house castings, clutch and transmission cases, machining, etc. The company makes transmissions for 7 petrol and 5 diesel

domestic models while for the export market, it makes transmissions for 19 petrol models and 3 diesel models. The Tapukara plant is also the largest manufacturer of diesel engines in Honda globally, with an annual capacity of 1.80 lakh car sets per annum. The engine test bed at the plant makes it possible for conducting various marketability and durability testing of engines and transmissions for domestic as well as export markets. In the last nine years, the plant has completed 11 projects on time. This plant which started by making frame parts, today even makes ferrous parts like crankshafts and connecting rods, cylinder heads, diesel engine components, transmissions and forgings, besides of course assembling the car ultimately for both domestic as well as global markets. TAPUKARA PLANT UNDERTAKES KEY MANUFACTURING FUNCTIONS
For making cars, the Tapukara plant undertakes key manufacturing functions like forging, powertrain – engine components, press shop, weld shop, paint shop, plastic moulding, engine assembly and frame assembly. Testing facilities include those for engines, test course and hot and cold test chambers. At all levels of production, robots have been engaged in large numbers at the plant. 3.80 lakh car sets per annum. Press handling robots too are installed in this section. Around 97 robots are there in the welding section where spot welding and roller hemming, among others are carried out. To ensure geometry of car body as per the original 3D design, the plant has a fully automatic CMM or coordinate measuring machine for quick measurement of white body accuracy. This is obviously advanced technology and third in Honda globally. In order to enhance the skills of its workers for welding, the plant has a training and development facility. The layout and processes for painting are as per Honda global design and specifications to ensure top notch paint quality of cars. Coming to the assembly lines, a main line and sub lines make up this area. These are state of the art and 100pc localised. Here tasks are undertaken

primarily by humans with robots being used for windshield sealing. Once the cars are assembled, they go in for various quality checks like weatherproof in–line test course, conveyorised static inspection, car drive performance

The BMW plant in Chennai has started the production for the all-new BMW 5 Series that will be launched later this month in India on June 29, 2017. The Chennai plant of BMW started operations on March 29, 2007. It locally produces the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 7 Series, the BMW X1, the BMW X3 and the BMW X5. Takata files for bankruptcy: KSS to acquire company Major vehicle airbag manufacturer Takata Corporation of Japan, which is facing a plethora of charges and law suits for its product recall following a spate of accidents involving faulty airbags in cars, has filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States and Japan. The company is also being substantially acquired for $1.6 billion by the Michigan based and Chinese-owned Key Safety Systems. According to rough estimates, Takata’s total liabilities stand at around $15 billion. It is the biggest bankruptcy of a Japanese manufacturer. Takata airbag inflators have been linked to several deaths and injuries around the world because faulty and dangerous bursting of airbags. According to reports, TK Holdings, its U.S. operations, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware on June 25, 2017. The Japanese parent company filed for protection with the Tokyo District Court a day later. KSS TO PURCHASE MAJORITY OF TAKATA ASSETS FOR $ 1.588 BILLION Meanwhile, Key Safety Systems (KSS), one of the leading brands in automotive safety systems, has reached an agreement in principle with Takata Corporation to sponsor a restructuring plan for the purchase of almost all of Takata’s global assets and operations. An aggregate purchase price of USD 1.588 billion has been agreed upon but is subject to certain adjustments at closing. KSS is a global leader in the system integration and performance of safety-critical components to the automotive and non-automotive markets serving the active safety, passive safety and specialty product sectors. KSS is headquartered in Sterling Heights, Michigan, with a global network of 32 sales, engineering and manufacturing facilities. The company has 5 main technical centers located in China, Germany, Japan, South Korea, and the United States.
GM India begins shipment of Chevrolet Beat sedan to Latin America
General Motors India has now begun regular shipment of sedan version of Chevrolet Beat from its Talegaon export hub to Latin America Markets. A consignment of 1200 Chevrolet Beat sedans was loaded for shipping to Latin America on June 26, 2017, following the start of production on June 5, 2017. “Our Talegaon facility is a key export manufacturing hub for GM,” said Asif Khatri, VP - Manufacturing, GM India, adding that, “GM India’s exports have more than tripled in the past year. GM was India’s third largest passenger vehicle exporter in May - recording our highest monthly total of vehicle exports at 8,297 units.” Earlier this year, GM India began exporting the Chevrolet Beat hatchback to Latin American markets.
First Jeep Compass rolls off assembly line in Ranjangaon After showcasing the pre-production version of Jeep Compass in April 2017, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) India’s first locally-produced sport-utility vehicle (SUV) officially rolled off the assembly line at the company’s Ranjangaon plant. The start of production sees India joining China, Brazil and Mexico as a manufacturing and export hub for the Jeep Compass. Ranjangaon will be the sole export facility for righthand-drive (RHD) markets across the globe. Meanwhile, FCA India has announced the opening of pre-bookings for its Made in India Jeep Compass. Mahindra First Choice Wheels includes premium bikes Mahindra First Choice Wheels Ltd. (MFCWL), India’s leading multi-brand used car products and services company, has now entered the space of used premium two wheelers. The company will initially focus on the premium segment (250 cc and above). For the two wheelers business, the company will set up its first outlet in Delhi and two more are expected in Mumbai and Bengaluru, said Dr. Nagendra (Nagi) Palle, CEO and MD, Mahindra First Choice Wheels. “Currently the price range of used two-wheelers in our outlets range from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 7 lakh,” he said. The company hopes to launch 50 twowheeler outlets By March 2018. Meanwhile, the company inaugurated the country’s largest pre-owned vehicle showroom in Wazirpur Industrial Area in New Delhi. Spread over an area of nearly. 7000 sq ft, this multi brand pre-owned vehicle display showroom will retail passenger cars, commercial vehicles and premium 2 wheelers from the same facility - an industry first. Mahindra Electric unveils roadmap for making next gen electric vehicles Mahindra Electric, manufacturer of electric vehicles (EV) and a part of the Mahindra Group, has unveiled a comprehensive technology and product roadmap, leading to the next generation of electric vehicles, which the company internally refers to as EV 2.0. EV 2.0 will see the company make investments to ramp up manufacturing and charging infrastructure and to develop new, high-end electric powertrains, motor controllers, systems integration and battery technology. The company currently offers a range of EVs, suitable for personal as well as shared and last mile connectivity. At the same time, the company is investing in next generation EV technology solutions which will deliver longer range, higher speeds and the next generation of connected car technologies. Further, Mahindra is actively engaging with the ecosystem stakeholders, both private and public to drive faster adoption of electric vehicles. Mahindra decides to quit Moto3 after 2017 season The Mahindra Group announced the withdrawal of Mahindra Racing from the Moto3 World Championship series after the conclusion of the 2017 season. The move comes in as a result of a shift in the racing division’s focus toward electric vehicle racing. The company now plans to focus on its FIA Formula E team which recently won its first race in Berlin and currently is in third position in the overall standings. The company entered the MotoGP back in 2011 in a bid to improve its technological prowess in the two wheeler space. Mahindra Racing has recorded 13 podium finishes including three race wins in the Moto3 category with their MGP3O race bike. Mahindra has also recently announced its EV 2.0 strategy for the next generation of electric vehicles for global consumers.

DICV crosses 10,000 trucks export mark Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) celebrated the next important milestone in its export business by surpassing the 10,000 units mark. Less than four years after the kick-off, the 10,000th exports vehicle rolled onto the ship at Kamarajar Port near Chennai. The milestone vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz 40-ton heavy- duty tractor for a customer in Indonesia, is part of a batch of about 250 trucks on the way to various markets in South-East Asia. DICV’s export product range, manufactured on the same production lines as its domestic BharatBenz portfolio according to global Daimler standards, features medium-duty (9-16 tonnes) and heavy-duty (16-49 tonnes) trucks.

BharatBenz launched its all-new BS IV heavy-duty truck range in New Delhi and NCR. The trucks meet the new BS-IV emission standards and are introduced at the price level of the brand’s earlier BS-III trucks. Tata Motors Electric bus commences pilotruns in Chandigarh Tata Motors has commenced trials of its 9 meters electric bus in Chandigarh. With a capacity to seat 31 passengers, the Tata Ultra ELECTRIC 9m bus will run for over 15-days, with the trial jointly carried out with Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) and the State Transport Department, with the Chandigarh administration having started the process of introducing electric buses in the city under its Smart City plan. This is in continuation to the successful trial of the 9 meters electric bus trial from Parwanoo to Shimla a few weeks ago, where the bus covered a distance of 160 kms in one full charge. The initial trials in Chandigarh also show very encouraging results in a running of 143 kms, covering approximately 70% of the charge. The trials are part of the Ministry of Road Transport’s agenda for the electrification of public transport, for which Tata Motors is getting ready with its range of electric vehicles, from 9 meters and 12 meters with various seating configurations, as well as its last mile passenger transport vehicle, the Tata Magic Iris.
