P. THARYAN (ROY) he New Year 2017 promises to be full of hope and positive sentiments. No, not because of demonetisation, a step I am personally not convinced of, but more because of the fact that the Indian automotive industry is planning a

slew of new launches. To begin with, products like the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, and the Bajaj Dominar 400 (deliveries begin in January 2017 for this motorcycle) will set the pace for new model launches. We have compiled a list of some very exciting products that are likely to be launched in the New Year. These comprise of four wheelers as well as two-wheelers. In the four-wheeler space, the new launches will be skewed more towards SUVs of varying sizes. In the twowheeler space the new launches will be skewed more towards powerful and stylish motorcycles. Apart from the regular road test reviews and news, we also continue with our news and analysis of the B2B industry. Coming back to demonetisation, maybe it curtails black money, maybe it stops terrorist funding, maybe it stops circulation of fake currency, but the fact is that in order for India to become an almost cashless society, the government needs to improve the infrastructure across the country and that includes good quality roads, hospitals, schools, colleges, quality power, potable water, toilets, etc. And then there should also be uninterrupted high speed internet connection. Let’s focus on that in the New Year! I wish all my readers a very positive and prosperous New Year!

I

n a world where time is precious, speed plays a very important role. Be it a pizza delivery in 30 minutes, an ambulance reaching a patient on time or just making it to work on time on a manic Monday, it all requires speed. But with great speed comes an even greater responsibility of control and that is exactly what the Mercedes C 43 AMG displays. It has been pioneered to perform in every aspect and that sets it a class apart from every other contender. The C 43 AMG is powered by a 3.0 litre, V6, Bi-Turbo, petrol

engine which bites harder than it barks. Yes, the exhaust note is quite throaty and sounds ferocious but it does not do justice to how quick this sedan really is. The engine belts out 367 horses on the asphalt from 5500-6000rpm. The C 43 AMG gets going rather quick, thanks to the 520Nm of torque which comes in at 2000rpm and goes all the way upto 4200rpm. Its sublime performance is only complimented by the final performance figures--the sedan accelerates from 0-100kmph in a mere 4.7 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 250kmph.

14 | MOTOWN INDIA | JANUARY 2017

Thanks to the well integrated Bi-Turbo the V6 engine does not feel linear in the least and on flooring the accelerator pedal one gets thrown back in the seat, catering to an immensely thrilling drive. The engine has been mated to a 9-Speed automatic transmission which is better known as the 9G-Tronic. The gear shifts are extremely smooth and deliver peak performance on demand. Different drive modes on offer also help the driver to squeeze the best performance from the sedan, depending on the requirement. The C 43 AMG comes with Eco, Comfort,

Sport, Sport + and Individual drive modes. Each mode puts the sedan in a different state of tune enabling the driver to optimise their performance. We drove the vehicle on BIC (Buddh International Circuit), first in the Comfort mode and then shifted to the Sport + mode. While in comfort, a mild understeer could be felt however in Sport + this was completely negated and the C 43 held its own rather well on the track. Mercedes has setup their AMG sport suspension in the sedan, which when coupled with the fat 245/40 R18 tyres

how fast you are pushing the sedan. Mercedes has also built in adequate stopping power in the C 43 AMG via perforated discs in the front and discs brakes in the rear. The brakes have a mean bite and get their job done well. The overall engineering in the C 43 is impeccable and will not leave you longing for more. Mercedes Benz has been

synonymous with luxury and finesse since its inception. Over the years it has skillfully crafted some of the finest automobiles known to man and their latest in India, the C 43 AMG 4Matic is no exception to this. The vehicle comes with great build quality and finish, which would probably be rivaled only by another Mercedes make. The

design and aesthetics are also quite appealing apart from a host of handy features and functions for convenience and safety. The C 43 AMG 4Matic will set you back by Rs. 74.35 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). If a power packed ride is what floats your boat, then this is probably one of the best bets under Rs.1 crore.

RENAULT KWID AMT

F

rench auto maker Renault has launched an automatic variant of their popular entry level hatchback – Kwid which promises to make commuting in traffic an absolute cinch. The new AMT has been mated to the 1.0 litre engine on the Kwid. When the Kwid was first unveiled in India by Carlos Ghosn, Chairman & CEO, Groupe Renault, he said, “This is a car

for conquest”. The conquest was to have the highest selling cars in the entry level hatchback segment, which is currently being led by Maruti Suzuki. The latest contender from the stables of Renault is here to challenge the AGS (Automatic Gear Shift) variant of the Alto K10. The AMT variant of the Kwid comes with a 5-speed automatic transmission mated to the 1.0 litre, 3 cylinder, petrol motor. The engine puts out a healthy 91Nm of torque and

18 | MOTOWN INDIA | JANUARY 2017

68bhp. Peak power comes in at 5500rpm while torque output peaks at 4250rpm. Unlike traditional automatics this vehicle does not come with a gear lever, instead it has a knob placed conveniently on the dash, to change between reverse, neutral and drive. Gear shifts on the 5-Speed AMT feel seamless and smooth if you are cruising around in city traffic. But if you floor the accelerator pedal a slight lag is witnessed

between gear shifts, the shift time is not too long and the Kwid AMT gets moving rather quick. The hatch however does not get a dead pedal which should be a basic addition to any automatic vehicle. The Kwid also does not offer the option of shifting gears manually which is available on

the Alto K10 AGS. Considering the usage of the hatch as a city smart car, the automatic Kwid makes a lot of sense thanks to the ease of operation while shifting between forward and reverse. The 5-speed transmission performs well on highways as well, the Kwid moves through the first three gears rather quickly, post that the fourth and fifth gears offer longer shift intervals in which you can easily cruise at speeds in excess of 100kmph. The automatic transmission combined with the maneuverability of the Kwid

caters to a very easy and hassle free drive through congested city streets and even on road trips. The smart hatch also offers features like a touch screen infotainment setup with navigation and inputs for USB, AUX and bluetooth. The hatch gets almost everything one wants in their first car and offers a lot of space for 4 adults to travel. To sum it up, the Renault Kwid AMT is indeed a city smart hatchback with just the right amount of frills and fancies to suit the needs of urban dwellers and all at a the right price of Rs. 4.25 lakh (exshowroom Delhi).

ost manufacturers have come out with their versions of compact sedans to compete in the ever evolving Indian market. Volkswagen also joined the band wagon this year by launching

the Ameo. While the car got the right bells and whistles we felt it lacked the right punch‌.that was up until we drove the TDI diesel variant which was recently launched. The combination of a 1.5 litre diesel mill mated to the 7-speed automatic DSG gearbox and a boat full of features

20 | MOTOWN INDIA | JANUARY 2017

renders a sucker punch to the other competitors and puts the Ameo right back in the game. While Maruti and Hyundai have been the major players in this segment, there is still a large scope for improvement. This is where we feel Volkswagen has capitalised extremely well

with their new Ameo TDI. The Ameo gets a 1.5 litre, 4 cylinder, turbocharged diesel mill which can churn out 108.4bhp and 250Nm of torque. This is the most powerful motor on offer in the compact sedan segment and lends a very peppy drive experience. Turn the key and

www.motownindia.com

A DRIVING EXPERIENCE the diesel mill roars to life, the engine achieves peak power at 4400rpm but the climb up the band is minutely linear since the peak power is higher up in the rpm gauge. Once the turbo kicks in you can feel that punch in the small of your back, as the Ameo surges forward. The engine’s peak torque comes in from 1500rpm and goes up to 3000rpm which helps the compact sedan to get going with ease and out do the competition. The engine of the Ameo has been mated to the famed 7-speed DSG gearbox. The transmission is extremely smooth and thanks to the dual clutch system the up shifts come with minimal lag. You can also throw the lever into sports mode and that makes the drive feel even more peppy. While having a compact sedan in congested cities makes a lot of sense, an automatic transmission caters to stress free commuting. Even if you want to get going in a hurry, the DSG gearbox assists in quick shifts and the 1.5L TDI engine punches out its 100 plus horses on the tarmac. The diesel mill returns 16-18kmpl in city traffic and approximately 22kms to the litre on

www.motownindia.com

highways. The suspensions setup on the Ameo is a McPherson Strut in the front and a Semi Independent Trailing Arm in the rear. Thanks to the mildly stiff suspension, the Ameo glides over bad roads and feels planted to the road while cruising at high speeds. Braking on the Ameo is facilitated by Ventilated disc in the front and drum brakes in the rear. The braking is progressive and quite stable, the vehicle also handles extremely well during panic braking situations and can come to a stop from 60kmph in a matter of seconds. The Ameo also displays excellent corner braking control and does not get its tail out easily thanks to ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Program) and ABS. The DSG variants of the Ameo also get hill hold control to prevent a roll back while stopped on a positive incline. The Ameo Highline variant powered by the 1.5L TDI variant which is mated to the 7-speed DSG gearbox is available for Rs. 9,31,900 (ex-showroom Delhi). The top end variant offers a lot of

WHEELZ & ROADZ

features which redefine convenience and set this compact sedan apart from the rest. If you are looking at picking up a vehicle in this segment, then in our opinion there is no better option than the Ameo at present.

T

he Toyota Etios sedan has been immensely popular in the commercial market (taxi segment) in India, but was never revered as a passenger car. The company recently launched the Platinum Etios with mild updates all round to make it more appealing to the private buyer. At first sight the sedan does look more sporty and chic with just the right amount of chrome all around to bring

about resurgence in the lifespan of this sedan. The front sports a redesigned front bumper with fog lamps housed in chrome casings and a new V shaped grille. At the rear, the sedan gets a reworked bumper with a fat chrome slab and a boot lid spoiler. The Platinum Etios also gets a new set of 15’ diamond cut alloys. At first glance the changes are not very obvious but spend a minute or two with this sedan and its fresh design changes

22 | MOTOWN INDIA | JANUARY 2017

will become apparent. While the Platinum Etios does look a little sportier than before, it may not just be enough to compete with segment leaders who offer a more contemporary design. What Toyota has always scored top points for is their exceptional build quality and finish. The Platinum Etios is no exception to this. It gets exceptional fit and finish along with a providing a very sturdy ride. The cabin has also received a few updates and

the quality of materials does feel better but could do with a little more improvement. Toyota has also added new colour upholstery options and has marginally improved the NVH (Noise Vibrations Harshness) on the Platinum Etios. What remains unchanged on the sedan is the power train options of a 1.5L petrol engine and a 1.4L diesel mill. We got our hands on the 1.5L, 4-cylinder, petrol variant which has been mated to a

5-speed transmission. The engine produces 88.7hp at 5600rpm and 132Nm of torque at 3000rpm. Smoothness is what defines this motor from Toyota. The acceleration is linear and gradual, letting you cruise through city streets in a relaxed manner. If you decide to floor the accelerator, you will be greeted with an incredibly leveled power delivery, which feels peppy as the vehicle gets going with ease. Given the amount of space within the cabin and in the boot, the Platinum Etios is ideal for intercity transit and weekend excursions. The ride on the Platinum Etios also feels solid and planted, aided by a McPherson Strut in the front and a Torsion Beam in the rear, this sedan does offer a fine and balanced ride over the varying Indian road terrain. It’s the deep ditches and steep bumps one needs to be careful of, due to a mildly stiff suspension. Braking performance on the Platinum Etios is quite good, it is facilitated by a ventilated disc upfront and a drum setup in the rear. The brakes get a healthy bit and give this sedan adequate stopping power. Even while driving at high speed not only does the ride feel planted but thanks to the addition of ABS as standard fitment the sedan also provides tassel free motoring. The Platinum Etios offers customers a host of handy features which includes electrically foldable and retractable ORVMs, parking sensors, steering mounted controls, Bluetooth integration, a part digital part analogue speed-o-meter, bench folding rear seats, ISOFIX mounts, rear seat centre armrest, and standard front airbags for the drive and co-passenger. The sedan is available at an ex-showroom Delhi price of Rs. 7.85 lakh, which in our opinion is a decent bargain considering the value for money on offer. All the updates and tweaks made on the Platinum Etios should put it on a path to resurgence and entice the private buyer.

rom the dawn of civilisation, no tyrant has been able to suppress the spirit of freedom. Mankind has evolved over time, breaking the bonds which shackled him to the very earth that was meant for him to rove. Many a tyrant has emerged and eventually been brought down but in today’s age and date we face a more complicated problem. Our shackles are no more made

of iron and steel but rather the responsibilities which bring us down to a mere existence. Sometimes it becomes essential to set your spirit free and that feeling of liberty is what I felt, when I set out into the horizon on the Indian Scout Sixty. When you set out on an open expanse of highway and venture into the unknown, there are no frills and fancies; moreover it’s a sense of anticipation which takes a hold of you. The Scout Sixty is

just on those lines. It is not a ride meant for the faint of heart but rather a weapon to unleash the rover within. Every fleeting breath you draw while on this motorcycle is a step closer to embracing the freedom which has long eluded us. The Scout Sixty gets a 999cc, liquid cooled, V Twin engine which makes 78 horses and 88.8Nm of torque. Peak power comes in at 7300rpm while the peak torque is achieved at 5800rpm. The engine has been

mated to a 5-Speed transmission with a tall gearing setup. The bike gets going at the slightest of throttle inputs and is smooth in its acceleration. The Indian Scout Sixty in my opinion is one of the finest motorcycles I have ridden thus far and that is simply because it is not intimidating in least. You can cruise the highways in a very laid back manner and thoroughly enjoy the ride. If you want power, that too is available on demand. www.motownindia.com

A RIDING EXPERIENCE

The rider gets a seat height set at 643mm, while the bikes foot pegs and handlebars that have been designed to maintain a very ergonomic balance of comfort and convenience. The engine is extremely linear and gets going with ease, this bike is also light and not bulky like its siblings, weighing in at just 254kgs (Kerb). All these elements cater to a very well balanced and nimble ride. The suspension setup on the Scout Sixty is a telescopic fork in the front and a dual shock in the rear. The bike rides well over the www.motownindia.com

beaten path and smoothly over tarmac. The 76mm of travel in the rear suspension ensures rider comfort and the ability to explore and go beyond, where roads end. The bike gets a ground clearance of 135mm which is decent and clears big potholes and breakers with ease. The bike rides on broad 130/90 R16 tyres in the front and 150/80 R16 tyres in the rear. The Scout Sixty gets immense grip thanks to the tyres and riders can achieve a good lean angle while hugging a corner. While in city traffic the turning radius does feel a bit

disconcerting, on highways riding this cruiser is a breeze. Indian has also packed adequate stopping power on this motorcycle with a single disc in the front and rear. The bike gets 298mm disc with a two pot caliper in the rear and a 298mm disc in the rear with a single pot caliper. Apart from fine engineering, the bike also has been skillfully crafted and in terms of its design and styling looks like a stallion on steroids. The fat tyres look right at home under the beefy fenders, while the bike gets just the right amount of bling. The

switch gear is of excellent quality and the bike also gets a host of handy features. The overall fit and finish is good with a lot of emphasis given to the detailing of this motorcycle. The Indian Scout Sixty is available for an ex-showroom New Delhi price of Rs. 11.99 lakh which seems to be decent considering the quality and capability of the motorcycle. This hunk of a cruiser motorcycle does have enough to set you forth on a journey filled with great memories and truly liberate your soul from the shackles of tyranny we face in our daily lives.

ife is all about making yourself and the things around you better. We constantly strive to improve ourselves and stay relevant. Same is true with the automotive industry. With new products coming every day and competition from overseas companies on the rise, Indian two wheeler manufacturer, Hero Motocorp decided that their much loved and successful commuter bike needed an increment as well. Thus the Splendor was morphed into the Splendor iSmart 110. The all new Splendor 110 gets a complete overhaul in terms of looks. It now gets a small cowl up front and new stylish dual tone graphics. The turn indicators get a sleeker look and the tail lamp also looks great but I am not a big fan of the plastic cladding under the fuel tank. While this new design of the Splendor 110 might not be too eye catchy by today’s standards, it surely has improved by leaps and bounds compared to what the previous iteration looked like. The engine also has received an update. As the name suggest, now the Splendor is powered by a 110cc engine rather than a 100cc one. This 110cc engine puts out a respectable 9.3hp @ 7500rpm and 9Nm of torque at 5500rpm. Just like the older Splendors this one is zippy when tackling the congested city roads. Acceleration comes easy till about 45-50kmph after which you start to feel the dip. According to me, 60-65kmph would be the sweet spot for cruising on highways but you can go all the way up to 87kmph if you like but beware that you will feel the bike struggle at such high speeds. While the 4 speed transmission is good under city conditions, people who travel on highways will miss the presence of a fifth gear as it eats up the first three gears rather quickly. Maneuvering the bike is pretty easy due to its aerodynamic design and light weight of 115kgs. There is also a 165mm ground clearance so you can be assured that the bike won’t bottom out in most situations. You get a telescopic fork suspension in the front and adjustable swing arm in the rear. The suspension is slightly stiff so bad roads and potholes will be felt but overall

www.motownindia.com

we did not have any gripes with it. The 130mm drum brake in the front and the 110mm drum in the rear do a decent job of decelerating and stopping the bike but they could have done with a bit more bite or Hero could have included an option to add a front disc. The tyres are thin and make for some great cornering experience although one must be careful that if you push too hard you might slip as well. A while back I got to spend some time with the Hero Achiever 150 and I really admired the three features that it had – Hero’s i3s, side stand indicator and AOH. I was more than delighted to see those three features make an appearance even on a commuter bike like the Splendor iSmart 110. It really shows the company’s dedication to provide safety to its riders across all their product range. Hero’s intelligent smart start and stop (i3s) technology switches off the bike if you are idling in neutral for more than 5 seconds and also starts the bike just by pulling the clutch. This is a handy feature that saves fuel and makes starting your bike easier as well. However, if for some reason you do not want the feature you can simply turn it off using a big blue switch on the right side of the handlebar. The side stand indicator on the meter console is also a very practical feature as people tend to forget to pull the side stand up when they are in a hurry or not paying attention, if you have the stand open then the indicator will glow in bright red to remind you. Finally the automatic headlamp on (AHO) feature keeps the headlamp of the Splendor 110 on at all times. The meter console is a mix of analogue

and digital. A big dial in the center shows you your speed and the smaller one on its left indicates the fuel level. On the right you see a digital display that show you the kilometers covered and a trip meter. I really like the elongated design of the grip on the handlebar, they really give the rider a feeling as if he/she is riding a fast bike. The rest of the switches on the handlebar are in very much within reach and easy to toggle. What Hero has done with the new Splendor iSmart 110 is that it has made a commuter bike that has the look and feel of a bike from a segment above and several practical features. At Rs 53,530 (ex-showroom Delh), to be honest, it’s is a great deal.

REVIEW

HYPERX SAVAGE

Most of us know that Kingston is a trusted manufacturer of memory products like flash drives and RAMs. What some of us might not know is that they have a Red Bull anointed offspring called HyperX as well. HyperX makes high performance products that are more or less oriented for gamers and one such product, the Savage 8GB DDR3 Ram recently made its home in our workstations and boy did it roar! Savage is the midrange line of RAMs from HyperX. This range goes from 4GB up to 32GB and can have a CAS latency ranging from CL9 to CL11. It is also offered with speeds of 1600, 1866, 2133 and 2400MHz. Aimed for overclocking purposes these RAMs come with 2 XMP profiles so you can turn the savagery up by a few notches. These RAMs also undergo rigorous testing and come with lifetime warranty just in case you need it. We got a single 8GB stick clocked at 2133MHz with a CL11 latency. This RAM use 1.65V which is slightly more than what we expected but it is still not a big deal but at the base 1600Mhz it runs at 1.5V The first and foremost striking feature of the Savage is its bright red looks. The red aluminium heatsink compliments the all black PCB underneath it and the asymmetrical heat spreaders up-top really put the inverted commas in Savage! While Savage comes dressed only in the dazzling metallic red attire it’s younger sibling does come in four different colours. The RAM is pretty small in its dimensions yet very heavy and feels like it indeed has been made with very high quality material. The small height (33.3mm) also means that it will easily fit in the most congested of cases without a problem or without disturbing any other components. In fact I was a little surprised when I actually held the RAM in my hand for the first time. This 240 pin RAM is also compatible with almost all the boards in the market.

The box of the HyperX Savage itself has the words ‘ACCELERATE GAMING!’ which implies the product’s intentions. Thus I called a few colleagues of mine who were bored out of doing their everyday desk job for a little gaming session. Our test rig had an Intel Core i5 6500 processor and an Asus Nvidia GTX 960 Strix graphics card. The resulting setup gave us an average of 53-57 fps at high settings in all the latest generation titles such as Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, GTA V and The Witcher 3. The results dropped slightly in Arkham Knight but that however can be contributed to the bad port that it got for PC. Taking some of the latest games like these to Ultra can bring the fps down to about 45fps. However it is known that RAMs have little to no effect on the gaming performance as most of the work is done by the processor and the GPU. But if you (for some funny reason) can afford the Savage 8GB RAM but do not own a graphics card then the work done by the VRAM of a GPU falls on the CPU and the RAM. The amount of memory on the CPU is not much thus a lot has to be done by the RAM. Thus we took the Savage and slotted it in a less privileged system with an Intel Core i5 2300, 4GB Adata RAM clocked at 1333MHz and no GPU. The test results here did yield some more frames in the titles. Of course we had to drop down to medium or low settings but there was a noticeable increase of about 6-8 fps. As a final test we put the RAM in another system with the same specs as the one before but here the motherboard supported a max of 1333MHz. Due to the speed limitation here, the HyperX Savage performed just like any other RAM would.

So once we fit the RAM in our system and booted it normally and found the RAM running at the 1600MHz rate. From then on we went on with our usual work which involves opening multiple heavy software at the same time. We were able to edit videos in Premiere Pro while occasionally switching to Photoshop for cropping and resizing some images while also listening to music. Then we decided to test the XMP profiles that come with the RAM. So we dove right into the BIOS menu and just navigated to the memory tab where we were given the choice to go from Auto to one of the two XMP profiles. This really makes things a lot better and safer for some who do not know the nitty-gritty of the volatile nature of overclocking and yet want some more form their RAM.

36 | MOTOWN INDIA | JANUARY 2017

The 8GB single stick HyperX Savage RAM can be bought through online portals for approximately Rs 6,000. While it may not be the perfect RAM in terms of latency and voltage consumption, it does manage to rise above the rest in terms of real world performance. The build and looks send a strong message about the company’s commitment of providing well made and gorgeous looking products to consumers.

ZEBRONICS MAX MECHANICAL KEYBOARD

Made to cater to the gaming community Zebronics Max looks sleek and comes with LED lighting under the keys with pre-programmed modes and removable keycaps. Even though the keyboard does not have a number pad it is just a little shorter in length than a regular keyboard. The all black keyboard comes with a nice finish on the top that is a mix of glossy and matte which gives the keyboard a solid look & does not attract too many fingerprints as well. You get a matching black 1.8m long braided cable with a gold plated USB connector at the other end. The two rubber grips underneath the keyboard combined with the keyboard’s weight make sure that the keyboard stays planted. One must remember that this keyboard is not meant for hardcore typing tasks. With that said, my biggest gripe with the keyboard was the obvious absence of a dedicated keypad but people will eventually get around using the number keys above the alphabets. The key are large enough but the height of the keys can take some time to get used to for some people. The keys require a decent amount of pressure to press which is good for gamers don’t want to accidently press keys. The 12 media keys are a great addition and can be used to play/pause the current track, go back and forth in the playlist, control volume and much more by pressing the function (Fn) key and one of the media keys. The keycaps themselves are replaceable but you will have to buy a keycap remover separately. To press the keys is satisfying and they also make a sufficiently loud click. The multi-coloured LED backlighting is really a boon for people who use their system at night with the lights of their room turned off. There are 3 brightness and a ‘breathe’ mode as well. However you do not get any customization options for the lights. The colours produced by the LED are rich and vibrant. On the extreme left of the keyboard is a strip the has the scroll lock & caps lock indicators at the top and the Zebronics logo at the bottom which is backlit. At Rs 2424 the Zebronics Max is going to be a great pick for young gamers who want to have their hands on a mechanical keyboard that looks great but is cheap as well. The LED lights are a great addition but we would have definitely liked more modes for them.

REVIEW

AMBRANE BT-6000

Ambrane’s BT-6000 is a Bluetooth speaker that also acts as an LED lamp with 5 different colours and three brightness modes. Within the box you get the speaker a 3.5mm Aux cable, a USB to micro USB cable and a manual. All of these come in full white. Below the speaker your get four rubber grips to hold the speaker in place. A hook is also tucked in here which we think is a very neat addition. You can pop this hook open and hang the speaker to act just like a normal light lamp. The buttons at the bottom allow you to play/ pause media or to accept calls, and switch to the next or previous track which can also be used to control the volume by pressing and holding. Lastly you have a button to toggle between the various connectivity modes and a button to freeze the lighting in the current stage so that you don’t accidently change it by tapping the top. On the right of the buttons is a blue indicator which glows when the speaker is in the Bluetooth mode. You also get a slot to put a microSD card, a micro USB port for charging and an aux in as well. On the side of these posts is an indicator that glows red while the speaker is charging and shuts off once the speaker is completely charged. The top houses the speaker grille which is also touch sensitive. Tapping the top once switches on the light in the dim mode, two more taps will result in two different brightness options. If you press and hold for a few seconds then the yellow light turns into red. Any taps thereafter lead to different colours including blue, green, purple and pink. On top of this you even have an alternative and dynamic mode. Pressing and holding the top again will bring back the yellow light. At its brightest the speaker can project enough light to light a big room. The only hiccup here is that the top sometimes does not register the touch. The speaker has a total output of 3W. In terms of the sound quality the BT-6000 delivered excellently. The 1200mAh rechargeable battery inside this Bluetooth speaker lasted for about 6.5 hours of non-stop playback in our test. FEATURES & TRAVEL

Awfis, Awfis...

now that sounds interesting!

Report: P. Tharyan; Photography: Afsar Baig

I

am sure many of you may have watched the ‘Office Office’ sitcom on television in the past and may have thoroughly enjoyed it too. But in the real world of office, things are never so exciting and easy. Beginning with the task of driving through thick traffic, spending hours in unending traffic jams, experiencing the pains of parking your vehicle....all of these usually take a toll on your health and peace of mind. Now there is a four-wheel Awfis that’s definitely bound to make your office life beautiful. With this Awfis, you really do not have to go to your office; rather your office comes to you. AWFIS is positioned as the new age office that is providing the ecosystem of workspaces that caters to small and medium enterprises, individual and local entrepreneurs. AWFIS was founded in 2015, with a seed capital of $10 Million, along with investments from entrepreneur Radha Kapoor and Amit Ramani. AWFIS, which is Asia’s largest co-working solutions firm is all set to take the shared office infra segment to a whole new level by introducing India’s first ‘Mobile AWFIS’ that operates out of a van in New Delhi.

At Motown India, we made it a point to experience this office on wheels. The van was basically a Force Motors Traveller vehicle modified into a spanking new ultra modern office that can accommodate up to 8 people. It is fully equipped with work desks, meeting table, high speed Wi-Fi, teleconferencing, a printer, LCD screen, CCTV,

38 | MOTOWN INDIA | JANUARY 2017

pantry and washroom. The splendid lighting and the smartly designed furniture provide absolute comfort even during long journeys. The van is currently available for commute in Delhi and Gurugram. There is no set route that it follows within the city and the traveller is free to use as per their itinerary. Charges per

day are also reasonable. These range from Rs. 4,000 for 4 hours to Rs. 7,500 for 8 hours. For every additional hour, the company charges Rs. 1,100 extra. The van can be booked through the Awfis App from few hours to 2-3 days and even a week, depending on one’s requirement and the availability of the van. After having spent a few hours in the mobile van, I realised

www.motownindia.com

FEATURES & TRAVEL that this office on wheels offers a lot of advantages. Think of a situation where a businessman flies into the capital for a day full of meetings. He or she can pick up the clients or friends in and around Delhi in the mobile Awfis, spend a few hours or so with them in the confines of this smart office and drop them off anywhere along the way. Think of another situation where one works from home (in our digital world we are all linked through internet and computers) and your boss calls you once a month for a tete a tete. He too may be operating from his palatial house, so all he

does is hire this van and meets his small team in the van. Since it’s more like a taxi, with a driver and attendant, you do not have to bother with the driving part, and the attendant can help make the coffee or heat up some food in the microwave. The mobile Awfis is very

spacious and does not give you a claustrophobic feel even when a few of us got in from the office. The seats were very comfortable and some of them were big enough to double up as a neat bed. There are charging points for your laptops and the LCD television can lift your mood

when you watch your favourite movie or show. The wash room is neat and practical. This new mobile Awfis is bound to find a lot of takers in the times to come, keeping in mind the myriad advantages it offers. Awfis, Awfis...now that sounds interesting!

here are a lot of beautiful places tucked away on the Indian landscape that come alive occasionally to the sound of music and adventure, attracting hundreds and thousands from across the country and even those residing abroad. Dambuk in Lower Dibang Valley, a tehsil in Arunachal Pradesh, situation in North East, witnessed such an awakening when it held its third edition of Dambuk Orange Festival of Adventure and Music from December 15-18. Amidst the refreshing music generated by both Indian and foreign artistes, two off roading events too were held that saw some raw action on the hilly and treacherous terrains of Dambuk. Unlike a red revolution, Dambuk’s festival earned its “Orange” name from the first orange plantation that came into being here almost three decades back. Today, Dambuk is known for good quality oranges and has become a cash crop of the area. This year witnessed the fifth round of Maruti Suzuki National Super League TSD (Time, Speed, Distance) rally and the JK Tyre 4×4 Fury off-roading event which was managed by two-time Raid de Himalaya winner Lhakpa Tesring. Before you think adventure was limited to these two rallies, you are wrong, because there were adventure sports of various kinds like river rafting, dirt cycling, ATV rides, Burma bridge sky walk, etc. The Orange festival was supported by the Arunachal Pradesh Tourism department.

TSD Rally: The 5th leg of Maruti Suzuki National Super League TSD Rally Championship 2016(MS-NStrdRC) – Rally of Arunachal concluded in Dambuk with Jagmeet Gill and Chandan Sen emerging as champions. The duo was driving a Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Covering a distance of over 700kms from Itanagar to Dambuk, the rally saw over 40 participants competing for the coveted title. JK Tyre-Orange 4x4 Fury championship: The Bangalore Off-roaders proved to be the most accomplished drivers in the JK Tyre-Orange 4x4 Fury, clinching the championship with ease on the third and final day. Siddarth Santosh and Lokesh Shivaraja, who had a superlative second day on , played it safe in the last two stages as they already had a sizeable lead in their pockets. The BODA team finished fourth

Overall winners of the JK Tyre-Orange 4x4 Fury championship and collected just 166.5 points on the final day, but that was enough to give them a cumulative total of 830.75 points and the glittering trophy. They were ably assisted by co-drivers Prithviraj and Sanjay on all three days, displaying their driving skills across various terrains including water, land and hills, to emerge victorious. The two car, four member team showed great coordination and courage as they crossed three 10-foot long pits by using wooden planks that were just

as wide as their tyres. Defending champions Kabir Waraich and Gurmeet Virdi of Team Gerrari from Chandigarh had a good day, finishing second in the ‘obstacle start’ and ‘reverse obstacle’ to hold on to their second place. They added 216.75 points for a total of 745.25 points. The local North East team led by Ujjal Namshum Chow and Aditya Mein showed amazing calm to finish third and grab the third place in the championship.

BOSSMAN

Speaks AMIT RAMANI

Founder & CEO, Awfis Space Solutions Report : P. THARYAN How and when did you get this idea of an office on wheels? We currently operate out of 20 different locations across India that includes Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. We do what is called co working centres. These co working centres are essentially places where people can work from one hour to 11 months which can be booked through our technology platform. This office on wheels was just an extension of that and what we were looking to do was essentially to make people productive on the go. Today with all the pollution, all the traffic, all the commute time etc, clearly this was an attempt to make people productive completely while they are on the go. What’s been the feedback from potential clients and consumers? The van is essentially launched for the community members of Awfis, so if you are a member of Awfis, you can definitely book the van through our technology platform. The initial feedback has been very positive. People have booked for various kinds of uses, some of them which I never thought could be possible. For example, one of our lawyers who works out of his Connaught Place centre in New Delhi booked it for a High Court

www.motownindia.com

arbitration. People use it for team meetings, people also use it for pick and drop from the airport. They also use it for regular meetings. Buying and modifying vehicles like the one you have done, require a lot of funds. Are you ready on that front? Similar to what we have done in our Awfis venture, we tie up with our partners essentially to what we call manage aggregation which means that the space is somebody else’s and we come in and manage the show. The plans are similar here as well. There are a whole bunch of people who already have these vehicles and we want to partner with them to actually create these mobile offices, not just in this format but in smaller formats as well so that we can partner with them to put out on our platform and help create the demand for the partners we have engaged with. My view is that the use of a corporate cab exists. The corporate customer is also looking at being productive while on the go. The least productive time is when you are picked up from the airport and you go into the next meeting. These kinds of formats will help make them productive even when they are travelling within the city. When is the big action taking

place in terms of launches etc? We are creating the complete roadmap for it. Early February 2017 is when we launch it in a bigger fashion. Currently we have this format where we have an office built on a Force Motors Traveller vehicle but we are also working on an Innova converted into a mobile office. Once those two concepts are tested and we get the initial feedback from customers and we tweak our model based on that, we are ready to go in February. Why is there a need for a small office the size of a Toyota Innova? The Force Motors kind of vehicle is meant for around 8 odd people and the cost to operate it will be higher. But we also feel that a lot of corporate customers today have meeting s which involves two to three people. We feel that smaller formats have much more utility and the Innova is an obvious choice for many corporate customers. The only difference would be that this would be a fully fitted out Innova which would be very productive. Our sense is that that market is much larger. As for the demand for such office on wheels, we expect it to come from tier I cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune etc. I feel the

tier II cities will take a little longer for us to penetrate. What else are you exploring in terms of an office on wheels? We have also explored a Volvo bus. Clearly, if you look at the commute time today for senior executives travelling, there is need to make them productive for the several hours of travel. But this can happen only in partnership with a corporate where you have a very focussed customer. What about the cost of making these vehicles, even if it is to showcase it to potential clients? Clearly there will be economies of scale. All the design that we do will be our own IP. My focus is to continuously drive down the price. The cost of an Innova will be around 20pc more when it is fitted out and a corporate customer will be ready to pay the price. Initial costs will definitely be there. What kind of targets have you fixed for yourself in this business? Our focus clearly here is to build a scale. Our first year targets are still being established. We are the first players in this kind of business in India and I am sure a lot of me-too players would join in later.

B2B NEWS

Year-end media interaction with Maruti Suzuki top management RC BHARGAVA, Chairman, KENICHI AYUKAWA, Managing Director & CEO, KS KALSI, Executive Director, Marketing & Sales and CV RAMAN, Executive Director, Engineering, Maruti Suzuki

OVERALL EFFECT OF DEMONETISATION RC Bhargava (RCB): It did lead to a dip in bookings in November (20pc lower than last year). Bookings as well as True Value sales. But retail sales were lower but you need to compare with the previous November which had Diwali in it. This year Diwali was in October. Our October and November retail sales together this year was 6-7pc higher than the last year October-November. For December, till 22nd, bookings were 7pc higher than last year. Immediately after demonetisation took place, there was certain amount of uncertainty and concern, and bookings dropped. The trend has changed. True Value sales are an important part, also

58 | MOTOWN INDIA | JANUARY 2017

declined in November. They are still lower in December. But it is showing an upward trend because the decline is not as much as it was in November. While 80pc of car sales are financed, only 40pc of True Value car sales are financed. As far as whole sales are concerned, Maruti sales to dealers, we will be on our target what we had planned for December. As a policy we want to minimise the dealer stocks at the end of the month. The moment you get into the new year and there is stock with the dealer, the customer says this is last year’s stock. Overall it seems to me that demonetisation’s initial negative impact on market has now reversed. As far as Maruti is concerned we are having no real cause

of worry because we are maintaining our production levels as planned, maintain our wholesale figures as planned. The only thing I am not prepared to do is to make a forecast for the next three months. I want to have a little bit more evidence of what happens in January before we predict for the whole year. DEMONETISATION AND RURAL SALES Rural sales constitute 30 pc of overall sales for Maruti Suzuki. In November rural sales were down by 11pc and December is up by 18pc. It is a little surprising why this has been happened. Rural sales are financed less than urban sales (around 50 to 60pc). Normally people in rural areas have more

www.motownindia.com

B2B NEWS cash with them. Banking is not that strong in these areas and moreover they are not generally required to pay income tax on their rural earnings. The rural market seems to have recovered real fast. I cannot give an explanation for that but that has just happened! ON CAPACITY CONSTRAINTS We have a capacity constraint. There is a much greater demand for the Baleno and the Brezza. We have been trying to optimise production, which means we have had to deliberately reduce the production of some of the other models. Till the time of demonetisation, every car had a waiting period. Overall the entry level car market (Alto) is little bit lower than last year. That is deliberate because we are not giving that many cars to the market. ON THE GUJARAT PLANT The Gujarat plant is actually a Suzuki plant, not a Maruti plant. My abiklity to answer questions on the Gujarat plant are somewhat limited. The whole project is on schedule. We will be selling cars made in Gujarat from February 2017. During this financial year, 10,000 cars produced in the Gujarat plant will be made delivered to us for sale. ON THE SUPREME COURT AND NATIONAL GREEN TRIBUNAL DECISIONS TO BAN DIESEL CARS EARLIER IN THE YEAR Diesel cars sales were adversely affected by these decisions. We were not affected because our major diesel product is the Brezza which was not affected at all. We had no problem in selling any of our diesel

products. LATEST ON THE R&D CENTRE COMING UP AT ROHTAK IN HARYANA CV Raman: We have already set up the test track and the crash facility and have invested till now around Rs 1700 crore. We are now setting up more facilities for ride, handling, NVH, etc and by 2019 we will be putting up another investment of roughly around Rs 2000 crore. Total investment in Rohtak by end 2019 will be around Rs 3800 crore. ON THE VITARA BREZZA WINNING THE ICOTY 2017 AWARD RCB: The Brezza largely designed by Raman and his team has won the Indian Car of The Year 2017 award. That says something. That was in competition with all foreign designed cars. That is something to be proud of, something that Indian engineers have done. I feel very proud of this. Raman’s mandate is to keep producing more Brezza type successes. ONE MAJOR ISSUE THAT WEIGHS ON YOUR MIND In the area of emissions, there is seemingly reluctance on people to look at facts and figures, scientifically collected data, and to take decisions based on that. The entire West, their pollution problems did arise out of automobiles, they never had a dust problem in their country. Here in India if you look at the air quality index, it is based on dust levels in the air. It is not based on NOx or CO etc. In the western world it is based on the NOx concerns. NOx in Delhi is still within the safe limits. The general impression is that cars are biggest polluters. Studies from IIT

Kapnur and other facts are simply ignored....I think this attitude needs to change. We have to look at our problems and our remedies to solve these problems. There are enough scientific brains to look into this matter and come up with solutions. THE GROWTH OF TAXI SERVICES LIKE UBER AND OLA, AND THE POSSIBILITY OF OWNERSHIP DYNAMICS CHANGING I do not see the aggregators as a threat to the industry. I think they are positive to the industry. The reason being that anything which increases efficiency level, which is a more economic level, has to be good for the customer and what is good for the user of cars it has to be good for the industry. There cannot be a situation where a solution is good for the users and the customers and is bad for industry. This will lead to a large number of people using four-wheel transport which they would not have used if they had to privately buy a car. The replacement cycle of a car for an Uber or Ola too is faster, when compared to individual car owners. We are involved in training drivers of both Uber and Ola. We have a contract for training 70,000 drivers. ON INCREASING COMPETITION IN SMALL CAR SEGMENT AND SCOPE OF A NEW SMALL CAR FROM MARUTI SUZUKI Kenichi Ayukawa: We already have a wide portfolio in the small car segment and we have plans as to which model needs to be changed and when. Based on that portfolio plan, we shall plan a change including a product change.

Continental introduces biometrics to vehicles

There is much more to innovative access systems than simply unlocking car doors or starting the engine. Continental will demonstrate the intelligence of today’s solutions at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 in Las Vegas. Through the combination of the keyless entry and start system PASE (Passive Start and Entry) and biometric elements, the international technology company is opening up new possibilities in the field of vehicle personalization and authentication. “The integration of biometric elements brings our expertise in system integration to the fore, as we are linking our access control solution with other intelligent systems in vehicles to ensure increased comfort and safety for

all passengers,” explains Andreas Wolf, head of Continental’s Body & Security business unit, adding that “In addition, the access system functions almost like a doorman, allowing us to control specific components as and when they are needed. This means that components are not required to operate continuously, which saves energy and increases efficiency.” Depending on the system configuration, automotive manufacturers can introduce another level of security to their vehicles using biometrics. Introducing a biometric element could mean, for example, that the presence of a valid key inside the vehicle is no longer enough to start the engine as the driver is also required to

provide authentication using a fingerprint sensor. This twofold authentication process significantly increases the vehicle’s anti-theft protection measures. Biometric elements also allow drivers to personalise their vehicles. The system is connected to an interior camera, which recognizes the driver’s face and automatically

personalizes vehicle settings, such as seat and mirror position, music, temperature, and navigation, for the driver in question. Continental’s Intelligent Glass can also be integrated, which allows drivers to gradually darken almost all windows of the vehicle and lightens them again automatically when the driver approaches.
