I

P. THARYAN (ROY) n this issue of Motown India magazine we have a drive report on the new Maruti Suzuki Ignis, a smart urban compact vehicle meant for the millennials. Millennials are folks who were born between 1981 or so and 2001. They love gizmos, they are cost

conscious and they kind of care for the environment (I am not very sure there!). Though the car is kind of funky looking, it is not necessary that the boys and girls from the millennial world will go for this car instantly. But knowing Maruti Suzuki and its solid marketing and sales muscles, we can expect some decent numbers as we go along. Another interesting vehicle we test rode was the Dominar 400 motorcycle from the Bajaj Auto stable. Rajiv Bajaj has pinned a lot of hope on this product which promises to excite the young ones, who have only the bulky Royal Enfield motorcycles to entertain them in that segment. A lot of interesting reports make up the rest of the pages. These include the Mahindra Royal Escape, the Rally Dakar 2017 and the CES 2017 held in Las Vegas. As for the recently concluded Dakar Rally, we all know it is the mother of all off road rallies and is an almost two-week affair across some of the world’s toughest terrains and in extreme weather conditions. Just as we were going to the press, in came news of the France based PSA group tying up with the CK Birla Group for cars and components. Also, in the F1 arena, Bernie Ecclestone has made way for Chase Carey of Liberty Media Corporation, the new owners of Formula 1.

Gee-zmo Effect

Report: P.Tharyan; Photography: Afsar Baig

I

f there was one person in the entire Maruti Suzuki family who was extremely excited about the Maruti Suzuki Ignis during its media drive, it was RS Kalsi,

Executive Director (Marketing & Sales) who, at dinner time, actually sang a one line song “Ignis, I love you” before a large gathering of journalists. And if you thought that was not good

enough, CV Raman, Executive Director (Engineering) went ahead and did a short jig to some very upbeat music. No one was making a song and dance about the Ignis, rather it was all about

fuelling a passion in the hearts of the hundreds and thousands of millennials, for whom the Ignis has been built. Millennials are supposed to have a few things in common.

WHEELZ & ROADZ They love all kinds of gizmos that are offered in its digital form, they are cost conscious and they care for the environment. So, when I got my hands on the top end Alpha petrol model (manual) I was pleasantly surprised by what it had to offer in terms of a “gizmo effect. Or should I say, the Gee-zmo effect! More of that later! The top end model has a smart

A DRIVING EXPERIENCE dash with toggle switches to control the climate in the cabin while there is a tablet like touch screen that comes with loads of functions. This infotainment system offers smartphone connectivity experience with Andriod Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link. The top end variant of the Ignis also comes with LED projector headlamps and DRLs.

These simply add to the good looks of the car which has been designed as a smart compact urban vehicle. The front grille with chrome accents in the top end variant gives the car a sporty look. The black alloys accentuate this style quotient. The prominent wheel arches and the smart rear with the three lines etched on the C pillar of the car, bring out the oomph factor in the car

When it comes to cabin space, the car has more than enough of it. With its slightly tall boy design, head room in the car is more than average, while leg room too is impressive. The car comes with a large boot space of 265 litres, which can be further increased with 60:40 rear split seats at the rear. The 1.2 litre petrol engine, mated to a five speed manual transmission is packed

with adequate power and decent torque. Touching speeds of 100kmph and above come quite easy to this petrol car. When it comes to ride and handling, I will say the car has been technically tweaked brilliantly to ensure your ride is not rocky and unstable. It handles well even on tight corners. But in the 1.3 litre diesel automatic mill I found the automatic shifting of gears not too seamless, as though the engine was pausing to take a deep breath after every gear. But then automatics score big time over manuals in some of the toughest road conditions, especially when one has to drive through thick traffic. The company has also emphasised a lot on the safety aspect with this car. It comes with dual air bags, seatbelts with pre-tensioner force limiter, ABS with ABD. These all come as standard fitment. The car is compliant for pedestrian safety, side impact and off set crash regulations ahead

18 | MOTOWN INDIA | FEBRUARY 2017

of the regulation time. It also has the ISOFIX anchorage which is basically a child seat restraint system, a feature which is meaningless in a country like India. But then kudos to Maruti Suzuki to set a new benchmark in safety standards! While the car performs well overall, what could really set the millennials thinking would be the car’s shape and styling. The Ignis is a car one could blindly fall in love with or could dislike it out rightly. On a personal note, I liked the Ignis and found it a very practical car. But I was a tad disappointed with the fact that several of its interesting features like tab like touch screen, LED projector headlamps, toggle switches for the climate control, etc are missing in all models except the top variants of the petrol and diesel cars with manual transmission. Now this is something which may not go down too well with the millennials. But then, I really do not want to make a song and dance about this!

A DRIVING EXPERIENCE NEW SKODA RAPID

A Reckoning Report: Joshua David Luther; Photography: Afsar Baig

E

very year we see slew of new products being launched in the automotive market, some are me too products while others post a stiff competition for contending brands. It is a rare occasion when a game changing product is launched and Skoda has done just that with their new Rapid. It packs a lot of features and gets a right mix performance and comfort, a reckoning long expected from Skoda. We got a chance to take the new Rapid

www.motownindia.com

for a spin and here is what we made of it. At first sight the Rapid is a sure shot head turner. Its bedazzling facade has a very captivating appeal with adequate chrome and sharp design elements setting it apart from other contenders. The striking DRLs and projector headlamps add to the sedan’s contemporary looks giving it a sporty yet elegant nature. The side and rear profiles are reminiscent of the previous model. On the inside as well the Rapid does feel quite

like the Vento, also offering a very rich and premium cabin. At the heart of the Rapid is a 1.5 litre, 4 cylinder diesel mill which puts out 108bhp of power and 250Nm of torque. The Rapid is also available with a 1.6 litre petrol engine. Peak power on the diesel TDI variant which we drove comes in at 4000rpm while peak torque is achieve as low as 1500rpm going up to 2500rpm. With 250Nm of torque available low in the rev band, the Rapid is capable of lunging forward effortlessly and sustaining the

surge catering to a very punchy and thrilling drive. The engine revs freely upto 5000rpm after which not much is on offer. The manual version of the Rapid is available with a 5-speed gearbox. The sedan is quick through the first three gears but the fourth and fifth gears have much taller ratios which can really be stretched on open patches of highway. Aside from the punchy motor and racy performance, the Rapid also delivers superb levels of fuel efficiency. The diesel TDI manual

variant is capable of returning 21.13kms to a litre of fuel and can deliver anywhere between 15-17kmpl in city traffic. The gear shifts feel smooth and crisp with short throws making changing gears a delightful experience. The clutch leans toward the heavier side and may be a little unnerving in congested traffic, however the Rapid TDI is also offered with the famed DSG 7-Speed gearbox which out performs in almost all driving conditions. suspension in the front and a compound link crank axle in the rear, the Skoda Rapid gets a very solid ride and feels planted to the tarmac no matter what the speed. The suspension is a little taut giving the occupants a sturdy and comfortable ride, the sedan glides over most bad roads and bumps but bigger undulations can toss those seated inside to a fair extent. While cruising on highways at healthy speeds the Rapid inspires a lot of confidence and that is also thanks to a well engineered braking setup.

Braking is facilitated by discs in the front and drums in the rear. Being progressive in nature, the brakes are able to bring this fleet footed ride to a halt in seconds. The steering is an electro mechanical system which feels firm and steady to hold, it has been weighted well and is precise to driver inputs. The availability of adjusting the steering for rake and reach also enables the driver to get into a comfy position and relax while traversing long distances as well. Speaking of long distances,

the Rapid gets a spacious boot capable of holding 460 litres of cargo, more than adequate for your weekend getaway. The sedan has a fuel tank capacity of 55 litres giving it a range of more than 900kms on a single tank of diesel. In terms of kit the Rapid gets a 6.5’ touch screen infotainment setup with steering mounted controls and inputs for USB, AUX and Bluetooth. It also gets MirrorLink connectivity, automatic climate control, electrically foldable and retractable ORVMs,

rear AC vents, cruise control, rain sensing wipers, remote boot lid release, cooled glovebox, front and rear arm rests along with plenty of storage spaces and cubby holes. The sedan also packs ample of driver aids such as front and rear fog lamps, anti glare IRVM, timed rear defogger, ABS, Hill Hold Control(Only in DSG variant), Electronic Stability Control, rear parking sensors, height adjustable seat belts, speed sensing auto door locks and much more. The Skoda Rapid also offers buyers a very spacious cabin with ample of seating space in the front and in the rear. The

seats offer a good amount of bolstering and lumbar support up front and the rear bench also gives occupants adequate under thigh and back support. The bench in the rear can easily fit three adults but the floor hunch is a tad bit taller than usual, which may leave the occupant in the middle fighting for space. All in all, the Skoda Rapid packs the best of all worlds, it has the right amount of features, performance, safety and space, which when combined with edgy looks and a price of Rs. 11.56 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) feel like a steal.

BAJAJ DOMINAR 400

Braveheart Report: Joshua David Luther; Photography: Afsar Baig

T

hey say making bold decisions is for the foolhardy and wisdom only comes with age. But it is the courage of brave hearts that has brought mankind to the frontier we are now at. Decisions which redefine standards may be considered reckless but infact usher in the era of a brave new world, where change may be an uphill climb but only for the betterment of us all. Bajaj in many ways has pronounced change and has

ushered in an era of evolution which will redefine motorcycling for Indians. The Dominar 400, which was launched earlier this month took the market by storm. Its incredibly affordable pricing and imposing looks captivated many a biker. But how good it is in the real world would be a question on many minds. We got our chance to take it for a spin on the winding roads of Panchgani in Maharashtra and boy, oh boy, was it a treat! Despite its

intimidating looks, the Dominar 400 feels very inviting to ride and Bajaj has been subtle while tucking in some neat features to improve performance. The Dominar is powered by a single cylinder 373.3cc, liquid cooled, fuel injected motor. While many believe it to be powered by same engine found on the KTM Duke, Bajaj has reworked the design and shares only the a few parts with KTM’s power plant. The motor puts out 34.5hp at 8000rpm and 35Nm of torque at

6500rpm. The meat of the power is found in the mid range and the Dominar reaches its peak performance with ease. Setting a rather comfortable pace, the bike is able to deliver a very linear climb in the power band. While peak torque is achieved at 6500rpm, the engine belts out 28Nm of torque at 3000rpm and the climb up to 35Nm comes in another 3500rpm, thus catering to a thrilling ride and adequate power when required. The engine has been mated

to a 6-speed transmission which does feel a bit clunky and needs some getting used to. The bike is quick through the first three gears and gets going with ease. Bajaj has also added a slipper clutch to mitigate the effects of engine braking while decelerating. The overall ride feels quite premium and sporty with the bike making a deep and throaty exhaust note. While cruising on highways the 5th and 6th gears provide adequate room for the rider to accelerate upto 148kmph and the bike can also achieve a 100kmph from standstill in just 8.23 seconds. Post 8000 revs one does need to up shift and this is where a gear position or a shift indicator would have come in quite handy. The Dominar does not feel out of breath easily and is comfortable

www.motownindia.com

cruising between 110-120kmph. The ride feels solid and planted, putting this machine through some tight corners and twisties is truly a thrilling experience. The tyres grip the road well and the suspension setup facilitates a very balanced and controlled ride. The rigid perimeter frame also enables precision steering of the motorcycle, giving the rider a capability to change direction in the blink of an eye.

The suspension setup is on the softer side, soaking in most of the undulations and bumps with ease. One of the most impressive aspects of the Dominar 400 is its braking performance. The bike features a 320mm disc up front and a 230mm disc in the rear. The discs are linked to a two channel ABS setup which is incredibly efficient. In normal riding conditions this motorcycle

But alas the journey must go on and that is essentially what the Royal Escape is about, a journey through Rajasthan, living like kings and travelling with flair and panache, while bystanders simply gaze on with longing eyes at the magnificence of Mahindra’s convoy. As we bid a fond adieu to the Gajner Palace and rolled out to our next destination, I carried the memories of a frolic filled night of music, campfire

FEATURES & TRAVEL and dancing. With the sounds still resonating in my mind, I turned the ignition key to the Mahindra Thar and with a huge rumble the behemoth came to life. Fitted with Mud Terrain tyres and a stock leaf spring suspension in the rear, the Thar simply gobbled up the worst of terrain we would encounter. The journey onward would take us to the outskirts of Jaisalmer, a road filled with scenic beauty. We got to see wild camels in their natural habitat along with some Rajasthani women in traditional attire. A winding road through the barren waste land and a seemingly cool evening breeze welcomed us to the city of Jaisalmer. But our stop would not be the city. Some 50 kms from Jaisalmer we were to camp out in the dunes of Sam. The setting sun burned bright shades of orange on the little hamlets that we crossed along the way. For miles and miles all the eye could see were dunes of sand and untamed earth with wild shrubs. Being so used to civilisation, it was a rather refreshing sight to see uninhabited land, just as how it was purposed to be. As dusk set, only distant shapes of dunes were visible in the twilight. The convoy ambled along into the darkness with just headlights to guide us. Then off in the distance a light shone out into the darkness, to my eyes it seemed like an oasis hidden in the desert. There she sat nestled in a brae, our camp for the next two nights. Raj Kapoor in the lead Scorpio took us down a broken path to the camp site. As we parked our vehicles and jumped out to stretch, my gaze fell upon the sky. It was a sight to be remembered forever. The countless stars in the desert sky bedazzled my senses as I stood there awestruck. I was quick through the evening supper, only to set out for the dunes in search of a night shot with the Thar.

As I rolled out of the parking area, a few others joined me to venture out in the desert. Setting our vehicles in four wheel drive we drove deeper into the darkness. Soon, the rumbling sounds that our vehicles made over hard ground was over and we hit soft sand. The dunes were not too far off. My Thar took on the dunes with ease and rumbled right to the top of a mound. With the able guidance of Raj Kapoor and his crew most of us were through the sand and rolling in the deep dark dunes at a healthy pace. Stopping at what I could perceive as the highest dune, I switched off my headlamps and stepped out onto the soft sand. Closing my eyes and taking a breath of fresh air felt like the

epitome of liberation. The stars along with outlines of the galaxy were all I could see and before I knew it I was truly at peace. The next morning we were once again heading out into the desert, but this time to really test what these Mahindra vehicles were capable of. Men, women, young and old, all got a chance behind the wheel and were able to conquer the desert sands. A few did manage to beach their vehicles but were eventually towed out with a winch. After a very thorough session of dune bashing we headed back to the camp for a bit of rest. The adventures of the night gone by had left me a bit worn out. As night drew nearer and we all had soaked in a fair share of the

desert sun, we gathered around the camp fire to enjoy some music and colours of traditional folk presentation. The evening was brought to life by Queen Harish sending the group into splits of giggling, laughter and dance. We all got our choice of poison and let the senses numb a bit. After the fires had trimmed down to a feeble flame and all had their fill of authentic Rajasthani delicacies we retired to our tents for a sound sleep. By the light of the next morning we were once again back on tarmac, heading to the great city of Jodhpur. Running at full force the convoy sped through some impeccable roads to reach Jodhpur before the sun set. Our first stop in Jodhpur was the Mehrangarh Fort, which is

one of the largest and most well stocked in all of Rajasthan. As our convoy drew closer to the fort through a winding road, the massive 186ft walls looked even more imposing. The fort sits 410ft above the city on a hill overlooking most of Jodhpur. The structure is reminiscent of the years gone by where invading armies of Jaipur and Bikaner battered the gates with canons. Most of the convoy members wandered through the Fort for hours, soaking in the culturally rich design and architectural marvel that the Mehrangarh Fort is. With the setting sun we headed to our rest for the night at the ITC Welcome hotel in Jodhpur. Rising early on New Year’s Eve, I hurried to pack my things and

The drive was not too long but would be filled with scenic beauty, set in the deep ravines of the Aravali range, the dreamy town is rumored to lie over the fabled Saraswati river where the only temple of Brahma in India can be found. Pulling into the Taj Gateway resort, we were welcomed to what would essentially be our spot for the new year’s celebrations to come.

Taking a moment to watch the sunset, I settled down at a fine corner of the resort and watched as the dusking sun slowly dissolved behind the rugged and ancient hills. Eager and anxious, most of us congregated at the party lawns early to begin celebrations of welcoming the New Year. We began our journey as a group of complete strangers but as time progressed, it would seem

as if we had turned into a band of soldiers, inseparable and resolute. The camaraderie and fellowship which we had shared over the course of our journey drew us closer to one another. As we danced and sang our way into 2017 it was a rejuvenating experience to build new friendships and barge our way into the first of January together. Alas, the journey must end, and so it did but only to be filled

with memories and stories to be regaled for a lifetime. In many ways, our journey was symbolic of getting lost, losing ourselves in the beauty of the stars, the smell of the dunes, the rich taste of authentic and unfiltered Rajasthan, the song, the dance and bonds which we would not forsake. And not to forget the spirit of adventure that is so etched in the DNA of Mahindra vehicles!

p in the mountains of Bhutan, there comes a time, ever so frequently, when heavy mist comes rolling in and blocks everything from view. So Akielie and I pull over under an overhanging rock, take off our helmets, gloves and boots.

After riding for hours with all the protective gears on, it is a relief to take them off and let our heads, hands and feet breathe! We were in no hurry. We waited for a good 25 minutes for the mist to lift and when it did, the view was just mesmerising. We stood rooted in our place as we were treated with a grand view of mountains

with lush green dense forest, a roaring river way below, cutting through their base and clouds hovering above us. Bhutan never fails to mesmerise its visitors. It had done that to me a lot of times‌. and I was game for some more. This tiny Himalayan kingdom is a great motorcycling country and I decided to try

the model from the Mahindra Two Wheeler stable‌Mojo, on the Bhutanese mountains. Although I liked the 295cc single cylinder powerplant, I was a little apprehensive about the sitting posture. Not because the posture was awkward but because my riding style is heavily inclined towards the offroad variety. But once I got

FEATURES & TRAVEL going, things turned out right. After we picked up the bikes from Kolkata, we rode 600 kms to Jaigaon…and I can’t really say I enjoyed the journey. I usually keep the bike’s headlights on while on the highway even in the daytime for safety reasons. The Mojo has a set of daytime running LEDs that can be seen from a distance. They are two thin strips of light but they do their job exceedingly well. Jaigaon, in North Bengal, borders the Bhutanese town of Phuntsholing and is a typical border town…Loud, crowded to the brim and chaotic. The last 5 kms to Phuntsholing took us an eternity to cover. We shared the road with overloaded trucks, buses, impossibly crowded mini buses honking like crazy, carts pulled by huge bulls, autos, brightly coloured rickshaws, bicycles and people. At the end of the town is the gate to enter Bhutan and it is a wonder how crossing a simple gate leads to a different world altogether…literally. Beyond the Dragon gate, the cacophony ceases. The traffic moves in an orderly manner, there are no three wheelers, no overloaded trucks and buses and certainly no animals on the road. Everyone seems to be moving in a relaxed manner and in no tearing hurry. The cars stop whenever people cross the street…and no

www.motownindia.com

one lifts a hand to signal the cars to stop like we do in Delhi! At the immigration center, a guy with sleek gelled hair introduced himself as an ‘agent’ and offered to help us get our permits. You can’t escape these particular breed of people but after an exceptionally tiresome first day, I decided to let him do the job. By the time we finished our paper work (non-Bhutanese need permits to enter), it was way past lunch time and I was not really in a mood to start a journey so late in the day. Nevertheless, a full stomach brightened my mood and we hit the road to Paro. The roads are wide and very well laid and the Mojos came into their elements. The Mojo has a long wheelbase and we rode the initial few kilometers in the hills a little tentatively…. taking care not to lean too much too soon! As we got the hang of the bikes, we started hugging the corners. Overtaking on the highway is a breeze. We were never in any doubt as we overtook even if there was an oncoming vehicle. Just open the throttle a bit and the bikes took off. The torque is always there when you need it. Paro is about 160 kms from Phuntsholing but the ride took more time than it should

have. We stopped every few kilometers as the cameras came out and we went click, click, click...The mesmerising landscapes got the better of us and we decided to let it be that way. The mist stopped us a few times and then the clouds opened up in good earnest and delayed us further. I usually don’t like to ride after dark unless absolutely necessary. A weak headlight sometimes throws up very unexpected and dangerous surprises. Fortunately for us, the dual headlight of the Mojo with its long throw and spread, lit up the road bright and clear as we cut a lonely swath on the dark highway. By the time we reached Paro, it was way past sundown and we were greeted by the sight of the strategically lit Paro Dzong. Paro has the only international airport in Bhutan and hence some good hotels too…some very high end ones and some for the budget conscious motorcycle travellers. A motorcyclist would rather save some money on accommodation and tank up to ride a few more miles.

Bhutan has, to a very large extent, managed to hold on to its tradition and custom. One is not allowed into government office without the traditional attire. The people still greet you in the traditional manner….a handshake and a little bow or with a folded hand greeting. People will hand over and receive money with the left hand supporting the right hand. It is a humbling experience. Very often, Bhutan is referred to as the last Shangri-La and with very good reasons too. Almost three quarters of Bhutan is still forested and the government has designated about 25 percent of this as National Parks and other protected area. The natural beauty is all encompassing…mist covered hills, ancient pagodas and monasteries perched on high hills with sheer drops, sacred forests, crystal clear rivers and snow

FEATURES & TRAVEL covered high mountain passes. An example of cultural preservation is the Drugyal Dzong at Paro. It is one of the oldest Dzong in Bhutan which was destroyed in a devastating fire many years ago and lay in ruins. It is now a protected monument and the magnificent ruins stand silently atop a hill. The famed Tiger’s Nest, also known as Taktsang Palphug Monastery, perched high on the mountain above the Paro valley was also destroyed in a fire in 1998 and was rebuilt in 2008. The monastery was first built in 1692 in the same place where Guru Padmasambhava had meditated in the 8th century. One look at the Tiger’s Nest and one is sure to think aloud ‘how on earth did they make this huge structure right out of the cliff?’ It’s a must visit. Akielie and I started the climb together but I soon found out that I was not in the best of physical shape. There are horses that take visitors half way to the Tiger’s Nest but I found it a rather shameful way to climb. So I trudged along while Akielie disappeared round the bend and went nonstop till the Nest. I was happy to let Akielie explore the monastery this time as I sat at the café and watched it through the rain. We were advised to take a longish but much more scenic route to Thimpu and so rode

through Chele La Pass and Haa Valley. We certainly were not disappointed. Chele La is about 35 kms from Paro and as we climbed the 13,000ft pass, we passed only a handful of vehicles. There was a lone van standing at the pass and we realized that it is actually a restaurant on wheels….Just as well, because there are no other place along the way where you can grab a bite. The Pass remains closed from November till April due to heavy snow. Past the beautiful Haa Valley, we reach Chuzom. It’s a confluence of two rivers the Paro Chu and the Wong Chu and crossing the bridge set us towards Thimpu. Chuzom to Thimpu is another stretch of great road. As we entered Thimpu, we became aware of the speed limits and rode accordningly. Thimpu is just as clean, beautiful and disciplined. Somehow I felt that life here moves as on a conveyer belt… very orderly and in a frustratingly straight jacketed manner. But I was wrong to a large extent. The people are extremely fond of their King…enamored is a better choice of word. In this 21st century, absolute monarchy does not exist anywhere else. The monarchy is constitutional everywhere as people want more freedom and democracy. But in Bhutan, when King Jigme

34 | MOTOWN INDIA | FEBRUARY 2017

Singye Wangchuk abdicated his throne in 2006 and bought in democracy, there were people who mourned. They mourned because they could not imagine a life without their beloved King as the absolute leader and also because they were skeptical of the new system of democracy. For a glimpse of the Bhutanese traditional way of life, we went to the National Folk Heritage Museum. The houses were made of wood and mud and there was space for livestock “inside” the house. In today’s world, it would cost one an arm and a leg to construct a house with so much teak wood! Just out of Thimpu is the Dochula Pass which offers a 360 degree view of the Himalayan mountain ranges. On a clear winter day, the view is just breathtaking…literally. Unfortunately, heavy rain clouds and mist blocked out the view completely. On the top of the pass, there are 108 chortans built by the eldest Queen Mother, Her Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk. Right after the Pass, the roads disappeared completely and turned into a slushfest. New roads are being constructed all across Bhutan and the incessant rain had made some section into virtual swamps. A major portion of the way from Thimpu

to Punakha were freshly dug up which meant that we rode most of time in 2nd gear. With our panniers, other bags at the back and us, the bike must have topped the scale at 200 kilos but I am happy that it didn’t get bogged down or overheated. The upside down forks up front had enough damping to tackle the all too frequent big holes and dips in the road. Fortunately, some of the other safety features in the bike were not brought to play. There is a roll over sensor that cuts fuel supply to the engine if the bike tilts too dangerously and a Limp Home mode that restricts the engine sped to a maximum of 5000 rpm if it detects an engine malfunction. I had seen picture of the Punakha Dzong and forever wanted to visit it. It stands in between two rivers and from vantage points, it looks absolutely riveting. When the water rises, the reflection of the white, yellow and burgundy Dzong on the water is something that one can gape at for a very long time. The Dzong is huge and houses some government departments as well as the religious sections. Exploring the Dzong with the heavy boots, jackets and bags sure works up an appetite and at a

lovely eatery along the way, we had some red rice, dal, boiled vegetables, beef with cheese and some really hot chilli curry . I forgot that tobacco products like cigarettes are banned in Bhutan and went to a shop to buy cigarettes. A monk with burgundy stained teeth that matched his burgundy robes, smiled and said that a smoke might be relaxing at that moment but it might get me into a lot of tension if I get caught! One can legally import a limited number of smokes but only for personal consumption and after paying a 100 percent tax. I decided it is not worth the trouble and I can very well stay without a smoke for 10 days. We didn’t stay at Punakha but rode down to Wangdue for the night. It is a nicely planned

breezy little town that is just 7 years old. For Rs 1000, we got a really good hotel with a good restaurant. The sky promised rain when we rode out for Bumthang and the clouds finally broke a couple of hours later. It came thick and fast and forced us into a lovely restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Their next door neighbor was about 10 kms away on both sides. The rain ensured that we rode only till Trongsa and holed up in a lovely hotel run by a Nepalese family. We had a room with a great view of the Trongsa Dzong, said to be the longest Dzong in Bhutan. From my window, the Dzong looked haunting at midnight as it played hide and seek with the mist.

Bumthang is absolutely stunning…Lovely houses with farms all around, horses in the meadow, gushing rivers dissecting thickly forested hills, narrow roads winding through alpine forest, waterfalls and what have you. We wanted to stay at Bumthang but had left our luggage back at Trongsa and so back we went in the rain and slush. The heavy rain had caused massive landslide between Trongsa and Gelephu and Bumthang and Samdrup Jongkhar. And that meant we had to go to Wangdue again and then make our way to Gelephu to exit Bhutan. The sun goes down rather early and after dark, there is not much that you can do although there are some lovely

restaurants and bars in the city. Karaoke bars abounds and you can sing in some bars as they have a good collection of songs We saved the best stretch for the last. Wangdue to Gelephu is one huge stretch of good roads. We rode along the river and raced downhill. On sharp uphill turns, we just had to downshift and open the throttle for an effortless climb. Coupled with engine braking, the 320mm petal front disc sure gives a lot of confidence. When our Happy tour of Bhutan was over, we realised that riding a motorcycle in Bhutan is happiness at its best! It is an amazingly beautiful country and has got its MOJO spot on! The word mojo, if you are not aware, means “a magic charm, talisman, or spell”.

LECTRO CYCLES

STAYING HEALTHY without huffing and puffing! As children we were often reminded of the fact that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. But in today’s world with increasing pollution and unhealthy lifestyles, an apple alone is not good enough to keep you fit. We need to conserve our environment and adopt healthy lifestyles. What better way than pedaling a bicycle for a clean environment and a healthy heart! With this in mind, we found ourselves riding three EPACs (Electrically Pedal Assisted Cycle) from Hero Cycles that went by the brand name Lectro. Hero Cycles, the largest manufacturer of cycles globally, has introduced Lectro Cycles to the Indian market. The company has lined up a range of three EPACs – Spark, Renew and Ozone for India. These pedal assisted cycles come with rechargeable 48v Li-ion batteries which can be detached and take 2-4 hours to charge up. The cycles get a range of 30-40kms per charge and have a negligible carbon footprint. The Lectro Renew cycle and the Ozone cycle get 5 levels of assist while the Spark does not have any option for adjusting the assist level. The battery packs of the Renew and Ozone are situated on the down tube and can be detached. On the Spark, however, the battery has been placed inside the rear wheel hub and is thus cannot be removed. The power assist acts like an invisible force pushing you from behind but it only works till the 25kmph mark which is the legal limit for any form of motorized two wheeler or else the helmet law kicks in. You can push the bike above 25km, but then it’s your stamina that matters. The batteries also charge within 3-5 hours and can last for about 25km for Spark, 45km for Ozone and 50km for renew. You get a handy display in the Renew model that shows you various stats like your current speed, trip distance, maximum speed achieved and power assist level. The Spark on the other hand has the ability to be paired with a special smartphone app which can act as a display. The Renew and Ozone cycles come with 7 shimano gears while the Spark comes with only three and all three cycles come with indicators to tell you which gear your are currently in. The cycles come with some really impressive brakes with Renew and Ozone being fitted with disc brakes both in the front and the rear wheel but the Spark cycle gets a disc only in the front due to the presence of the battery hub in the rear wheel. While the Spark and the Ozone are for more casual and conventional usage the Renew with its beefy tyres is aimed for enthusiasts who like to challenge the various terrains that come across their way. This also makes the cycle the heaviest among the three with a weight of 31.6kgs. But one can easily dismantle the front tyre by a simple push of a lever and pack the cycle into your car. Comparatively the Ozone weighs 22.6kgs and the Spark is the lightest at 19kgs. You will have to shed Rs 83,050 for getting your hands on the renew, Rs 81,150 for the Spark and Rs 42050 for the Spark. The prices might be a bit too steep for some but we feel that it is a price worth paying for saving our priceless environment. I was able to take the Renew model to a top speed of 36kmph, after which fatigue set in. But thanks to the pedal assist levels, I was able to catch my breath as the battery operated motor kicked in every time I pushed the pedal down. With a growing need to become more ecofriendly and green, Lectro cycles seem to have opened up a new avenue for the more conscious citizens to effect a change for the better in the environment and in themselves.

not only destroyed a village but left teams and vehicles trapped for 24 hours. The extreme weather conditions also resulted in two stages being cancelled and another two cut at the half way mark of the timed special when flood waters made it impossible to continue. For the participants, it was a journey beyond fear! Crashes and accidents left many a participant injured, forcing a few to retire. Early on, India’s very own Aravind KP of Sherco TVS quit after a nasty shoulder injury, Toyota’s Nasser Al-Attiyah had to bow out after his car suffered a serious mechanical glitch and Toby Price, KTM’s 2016 winner, exited the race after he broke his femur

in a fall. Team Peugeot star Carlos Sainz too had to retire early on in the race. When the rally started around 318 vehicles took part, but not many were left in the end. Finally, Sam Sunderland of KTM took his first Dakar win in Buenos Aires after two failed attempts in previous years, ensuring the trophy stays with the official KTM team. Stéphane Peterhansel defended his crown at the wheel of an aweinspiring Peugeot and wrote yet another chapter in the history of the Dakar. Saturday’s (January 14, 2017) 64km timed special stage between Rio Cuarto and Buenos Aires concluded Dakar Rally 2017 and its 9,000km route through South America.

Meanwhile, Hero Motosports Team Rally made motorsports history when it’s two riders, Joaquim Rodrigues (came in 10th) and C.S Santosh (came in 47th) climbed up the finish ramp at the Automobile Club of Argentina, ensuring that the Indian manufacturer attained the distinction of achieving 100 percent success in the iconic Dakar Rally in its debut appearance. BIKES Adrien Van Beveren and Gerard Farrés were the last riders locked in a battle for a podium spot at the start of stage 12. Tens of kilometres in which the two men gave it their all came to nothing as they both finished with the exact same time. The Frenchman was declared the official winner, while 27-year-old Sam Sunderland crowned his rally-raid career with his maiden Dakar victory, finishing ahead of teammate Matthias Walkner. The first Briton to win the Dakar, he claimed the rally ahead of KTM teammate Matthias Walkner (+32’00”) and Gerard Farrés (+35’40). Sam Sunderland made history by finishing the last special in sixth place to take the overall win. Both Sunderland and Walkner had never finished the infamous rally before. The duo made up for Toby Price’s abandon, their teammate and defending champion who retired after crashing and breaking his leg on Stage 4. “It’s overwhelming,” admitted Sunderland. “When I crossed the line, the emotion really took over. It’s taken some time to change [from his motocross background], I’ve learned the hard way like everybody. I kept fighting and never gave up and I’m really grateful for all the people I have around me that have guided me. Everybody in the team has worked so hard, they all deserve this victory,” he added.

the closing stage, beating local boy Santiago Hansen by 52 seconds. This enabled him to take second place in the final general classification (+1h14’51) behind Sergey Karyakin, the dominant winner of the race, with Pablo Copetti in third (+4h20’19).

CARS It was a well-known feeling for Stéphane Peterhansel, who popped the champagne for the 13th time after a fierce two-week battle with Sébastien Loeb, who claimed his fifth special today. The man from Alsace came closer to his teammate this time round, but he was still unable to loosen his iron grip on the category. Stéphane Peterhansel edged Sebastien Loeb overall (+5’13) with their Team Peugeot Total teammate Cyril Despres in third (+33’28). Three Frenchmen and three Peugeot 3008 DKRs occupied the podium, with only Carlos Sainz missing after he crashed and was forced to retire during the first week of racing. Loeb did win Saturday’s short stage 19 seconds ahead of the overall leader, with Giniel de Villiers, Toyota’s South African driver, in third place (+0’30). “We were fighting with six or seven drivers at the beginning of the race and after a while, they were only four,” said Peterhansel at the finish line. “And during the last week, we were only two – just Seb and I. We fought really strongly and I am the winner in the end – but it’s a small detail. This is the victory of experience,” he noted.

TRUCKS QUAD Ignacio Casale of Yamaha won the closing stage in the quad category, but Sergey Karyakin put in a commanding performance throughout the rally to grab the overall win in Buenos Aires. Chilean rider Casale claimed

Meanwhile, in the truck category, Eduard Nikolaev restored Kamaz to its former glory and took his second victory in South America ahead of teammate Dmitriy Sotnikov. Eduard Nikolaev was already assured of winning his second Dakar but the Kamaz

driver confirmed his domination with another victory on Saturday. His teammate and fellow Russian Dmitry Sotnikov (+18’58) gave Kamaz the runner-up position in the general. Gerard de Rooy (Iveco) took the third overall spot (+41’19). Dakar legend: Stéphane Peterhansel was already a Dakar legend thanks to his victory records in the motorcycle (6) and car (6) categories. However, “Mr Dakar” is still hungry for more. He was once again resourceful enough to see off Sébastien Loeb’s challenge and claim his 13th Dakar. For perspective, Michael Schumacher won seven titles in Formula 1, Valentino Rossi nine titles in Moto GP and teammate Sébastien Loeb nine in the WRC.

A WORTHY SUCCESSOR The PEUGEOT 3008DKR successfully took over the baton from last year’s winning car – the Peugeot 2008DKR – to make an immediate mark on the world’s toughest cross-country rally. The two-wheel drive car warded off its all-wheel drive opposition to reveal the value of the technical configuration chosen by Team Peugeot Total. In spite of unfavourable changes to the regulations (bigger air restrictor), work on the car’s engine and suspension in recent months paid big dividends. At the same time, the switch to a body shape derived from that of the Peugeot 3008 SUV permitted an aerodynamic package which favoured high top speeds. Team Peugeot Total’s one-twothree finish on the 2017 event is the latest in a long list of Dakar Rally successes for the brand. It is Peugeot’s sixth overall victory and its second podium lockout from seven participations.

LEADS THREE-WAY PODIUM FOR KTM The 2017 Dakar Rally, an edition that delivered its share of drama was finally settled on Saturday January 14 when Red Bull KTM factory riders, Britain’s Sam Sunderland and Austrian teammate Matthias Walkner crossed the line 1-2 to give the Austrian brand its 16th consecutive victory. Spain’s Gerard Farres Guell completed a perfect day when he finished third for a complete KTM podium. Sam Sunderland and Matthias Walkner not only succeeded in taking the top two spots, but also to complete the rally for the first time. Both had retired injured in earlier editions. Sunderland went into the final swift 64 km timed special with 33-minute advantage on his KTM 450 Rally and the task of holding his nerve and getting the job done. He completed the stage in a comfortable sixth place and sacrificed only a couple of minutes. After almost 9,000 km through Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina, he topped the overall timesheets with a total time of 32:06.22 hours. It was also an excellent performance by Walkner, who exited in 2016 with a broken leg that kept him out of competition for much of the past season. He was under slightly more pressure on the run to the finish as he had two riders, Gerard Farres Guell and Adrien Van Beveren, the eventual stage winner, in hot pursuit. Walkner finished fourth in the stage and was 33 seconds off the leading time, which was enough to preserve his position. Sunderland and Walkner stepped up and delivered for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team after teammate and 2016 winner, Toby Price of Australia, went out in the fourth stage after crashing and breaking his

MOTORSPORT leg in four places. After surgery in La Paz, the Australian desert champion has now returned to Australia with the aim of being back on his KTM 450 Rally machine in four months. Spanish KTM factory rider Laia Sanz, who had a very successful second week after losing time in the first week, wrapped up her rally at 16th overall, just one place short of her pre-race goal of a top 15 finish. Also the women’s World Enduro Champion, Sanz is the standout woman rally-raid rider. KTM first won the Dakar Rally in 2001 and has topped the podium every subsequent year, with the exception of 2008 when the race was cancelled on the eve of departure because of terrorist threats in North Africa. It regrouped for the 2008 edition, held in for the first time in South America, where it has developed a huge following and is an annual sporting highlight. The sport is also attracting a new generation of South American rally-raid talent. Alex Doringer, KTM’s Division Manager Enduro and Rally: “The Dakar, with all these circumstances, with the weather, the rain and muddy conditions, it was quite difficult for the team from a logistics point of view. I think for the riders, it was quite a different Dakar. There were not as many kilometers of special stages but it was intensive both physically and mentally. Sam did a fantastic job and he was very consistent. Also Matthias was the same.” Doringer also paid tribute to Sanz, saying: “What the lady does is amazing.” While the Dakar Rally attracts the world’s elite rally-raid riders, it is also a magnet for private teams and amateur riders who make up most of the field of competitors. Ninety-seven, of the original field of 146 were at the finish in Buenos Aires. The remarkable spirit of the Dakar was perfectly captured

in two incidents. Speaking from his hospital bed in La Paz after a massive crash in the fourth stage, Toby Price noted his biggest regret was letting down his team. Then, on Thursday, Slovakian KTM rider Stefan Svitko, who finished second last year collapsed with exhaustion at the end of the special and had to be transported by ambulance to the bivouac. He later returned, picked up his bike and was on the start for Friday’s penultimate stage. Svitko crossed the finish line in overall 25th place.

VAN BEVEREN TOPS FINAL STAGE TO END DAKAR RALLY 2017 ON A HIGH Determined to give Yamaha a place on the final podium at the Dakar Rally 2017, Adrien Van Beveren put in a committed final stage performance in Argentina to claim an impressive stage victory. Ensuring a very positive end to his two-week-long adventure in South America, the Yamalube Yamaha Official Rally Team rider wrapped up the event with an impressive fourth in the overall standings. With Adrien’s teammate Hélder Rodrigues securing ninth overall, Yamaha’s official team saw both its riders finish inside the top 10 of the 2017 Dakar Rally. Entering the rally’s last stage less than a minute behind the third placed rider, Van Beveren gave his best during the 64-km-long timed special. Locked in a fierce battle for the final podium position with Spain’s Gerard Farrés, Adrien pushed hard from start to finish but could not make up any time against his closest rival. Wrapping up the 9,000km adventure in fourth overall, and just 48 seconds behind third, the Frenchman demonstrated his huge potential in what was just the second Dakar Rally of his career. With the 2017 Dakar Rally being one of the most demanding rally races to take place in South

ALL THREE MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS RALLY CARS COMPLETE THEIR FIRST DAKAR Another exciting yet challenging Dakar came to an end with all three new MINI John Cooper Works Rally cars successfully completing their first ever Dakar – demonstrating that the newest cars in the family are set to follow in the ultra-reliable tyre tracks of their predecessor, the MINI ALL4 Racing. Seven out of all eight MINI competitors who entered the 2017 Dakar completed the route. The 2017 Dakar has, as always, delivered a unique set of challenges for the drivers and co-drivers brave enough to tackle it. Poor weather conditions and related flooding have caused the cancellation of two stages and a reduction in distance of others, leading to the loss of some of the most technical parts of the track from the course and a total distance of 1,400 km less than planned. For MINI, Orlando Terranova (ARG) and Andreas Schulz (GER) were the shining stars in this respect, finishing 6th in the general standings on Terranova’s home turf. In the early stages of the race though it was Mikko Hirvonen (FIN) and Michel Perin (FRA) who looked to be the dominant MINI force in the #303 MINI John Cooper Works Rally. The Finn looked in a strong position to challenge for a place on the final podium in only his second Dakar, but navigational difficulties during later stages meant that was not to be. The pair completed the course in an unlucky 13th.

www.motownindia.com

The altitude in the highest sections of the course has proved difficult for some this year though, even for experienced drivers. MINI’s Yazeed Al Rajhi (KSA) suffered from severe sickness in the first part of the event, leading to a temporary withdrawal from the event on Stage 4, before re-entering the following day on Stage 5, which added a 12-hour penalty to the completion time of the #306 MINI John Cooper Works Rally Car. Without that unforeseen delay, Al Rajhi and codriver Timo Gottschalk (DEU) would have finished 20 places higher than their eventual 27th, which is still subject to appeal. The MINI ALL4 Racing continued to be a strong and consistent performer, with the #316 MINI ALL4 Racing of Jakub Przygonski (POL) and Tom Colsoul (BEL) completing the 2017 Dakar in 7th. For Mohamed Abu Issa (QAT) and co-driver Xavier Panseri (FRA), the 2017 Dakar has been a remarkable achievement. This was the first ever Dakar in a car for Abu Issa who is better known for racing quads at the event. The pair’s solid performances, supported by the reliability of the #322 MINI ALL4 Racing, helped them finish in 10th. The experienced Stephan Schott (GER) completed another Dakar, this time with navigation support from co-driver Paulo Fiuza (POR). The pair ended the 2017 rally in 15th. Sylvio de Barros (BR) and Rafael Capoani (BR) finished their first Dakar in a MINI in 18th. Boris Garafulic (CHL) and Filipe Palmeiro (POR) were the only pairing not to achieve full race distance in the #314 MINI ALL4 Racing, choosing to retire just on the penultimate stage. They had ended the previous day (Stage 10) in 7th in the overall standings.

MOTORSPORT While Rodriques came in 10th, his teammate Santosh came in 47th. After completing the 9,000-km run across Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina it was time to pop the champagne. Hero Motosports Team Rally was set up in April 2016 in strategic partnership with German off-road motorcycle specialist, Speedbrain GmbH. But in just a few months, the team set a cracking pace in their race developments and took the plunge into the world’s biggest off-racing event. Rodrigues, not only finished the rally, he exceeded the expectations of the fans and team members by claiming a highly coveted 10th place finish on his first Dakar appearance. Santosh, the team’s second rider, who made his third appearance in the world’s toughest rally, too finished in a highly creditable 47th place in the overall general classification to make it a near perfect Dakar for the Indian Team. In the final stage 12 comprising 64-km, Rodrigues completed his timed run in 33 minutes 57 seconds that put him in 15th place in the stage ranking, while Santosh covered the distance in 40 minutes 39 seconds that put him 45th place for the day. After 12 stages Rodrigues clocked 34 hours 25minutes 59 seconds, while Santosh finished all the timed sections in 42 hours 01 minute 16 seconds. Pawan Munjal, Chairman, MD & CEO Hero MotoCorp, “This was the debut season of Hero Motosports Ream Rally at Dakar 2017. We had full faith in our riders C.S. Santosh and Joaquim Rodrigues and they demonstrated excellent skill, endurance and temperament with their superlative performance. This is indeed a significant milestone in the global journey of Brand Hero”.

HONDA: Monster Energy Honda Team riders Michael

Metge, Paulo Goncalves and Joan Barreda started from positions 84, 92 and 93. Metge finished the stage 3minutes 1second behind the leader in 9th, while Goncalves in 5th (1minute 25seconds behind), and Barreda in 3rd, a close 18 seconds behind the winner of the final stage. Final overall standings for the Monster Energy Honda Team show Barreda in 5th, Goncalves in 6th and Metge in 14th. Also local Argentinian rider Franco Caimi who entered from the Honda South America Rally Team showed his skill and finished an overall 8th, the highest position for this year’s Dakar rookies and was rewarded the Rookie of the Year prize. The one hour sanction all the Honda riders received due to unclear description in the rulebook resulted in letting the rivals dominate the podium. However, the fact that Barreda closed the gap to 43minutes 8seconds when reaching the goal line in Buenos Aires, when he was 1hour 14minutes behind when finishing the 7th stage, shows his determination and how strong he rode despite of the shortened and cancelled sections limiting his chances to catch up. The team winning five stages, four by Barreda and one by Brabec, is a huge achievement and both Goncalves and Metge also were always fighting amongst the top runners. This comes to prove that the CRF450RALLY has further improved its reliability and dependability through the practical testing over the last year, and the advanced team structure has united the Monster Energy Honda Team, and was able to show their ability at the 2017 Dakar. Rajiv Sethu clinches Pro Stock championship Rajiv Sethu of Honda Ten10 Racing clinched the title in the Pro Stock 165cc category after scoring a grand double over the weekend in the fifth and final round of the MRF MMSC FMSCI Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship which concluded at the MMRT track, Sriperumbudur, near Chennai on January 22, 2017. Locked in a tight tussle for the title with team-mate and championship leader Hari Krishnan Rajagopal going into the final round, Sethu, returning from a major hip injury, kept his wits about him to win both the races to clinch the title. Hari Krishnan was under pressure to stay in front and had a disastrous weekend as he failed to pick up any points. Also scoring a double in the National championship was Jagan Kumar of TVS Racing who continued his fine form while retaining title in the top-end Super Sport Indian 165cc class to finish the season with five wins from 10 starts. Jagan, though, had to work hard for his second win this weekend as he was pushed for much of the six-lapper until he managed

to get his nose in front in the latter half to take the chequered flag before doing a lap of honour to celebrate his fifth National title in a row. Equally dominating was Auroville-based Spaniard Ami van Poederooijen of Rockstar Racing in the Super Sport Indian 300-400cc class as he completed a double for seven wins, six of them in a row. He had sealed the championship the previous day after winning the first of the two races, but that did not stop him from further underlining his dominance by topping the second outing on Sunday. The concluding day’s proceedings witnessed its quota of close and exciting racing, especially in the MMSC One-Make Championships as Meka Vidhuraj (Suzuki Gixxer Cup Open), Joseph Mathew (Gixxer Cup Novice), Kannan Karnan (TVS Apache RTR200 Open), Yashas RL from Bengaluru, who won all the three races over the weekend (TVS Novice), Mathana Kumar (Honda CBR 250) and Anish Shetty from Hubballi (Honda CBR 150) clinched the titles in their respective categories.

Sebastien Ogier claims fourth win in FIA World Rally Championship Sebastien Ogier began the defence of his FIA World Rally Championship crown with a fourth consecutive win in the MonteCarlo rally on January 22, 2017. He eased through the final leg in the mountains above Monaco to claim his fifth Monte success in total by 2min 15.0sec in a Ford Fiesta World Rally Car. It was a dream debut for the

Frenchman with the M-Sport World Rally Team, for whom this was a first win since November 2012. Jari-Matti Latvala finished second in a Toyota Yaris on the Japanese manufacturer’s return to the WRC after a 17-year absence. Final day engine problems for Ott Tänak denied M-Sport a one-two as he slipped to third, a further 42.8sec behind.

46 | MOTOWN INDIA | FEBRUARY 2017

Toyota’s last WRC podium came at the penultimate round in Australia in 1999 with Carlos Sainz at the wheel. Latvala’s teammate Juho Hänninen was placed third on the opening night of the four-day rally and was in podium contention until he slid off the road in icy and snowy conditions on day two. He recovered seven places to finish

in 16th. Toyota Gazoo Racing team principal Tommi Mäkinen said the result - with Latvala just 2 min, 15 sec behind the rally winner - was beyond the team’s expectations. Ogier took the lead late on Saturday’s penultimate leg when event-long leader Thierry Neuville broke his Hyundai i20 Coupe’s suspension after an impact. With

Latvala struggled to find a good rhythm initially but changes to his car’s set-up revitalised the Finn. Third overnight became second when Ott Tänak dropped time with a broken ignition coil pack in his Fiesta and Latvala sped by. With no service, Estonian Tänak worked furiously to make repairs and did enough to hold onto third, fending off Dani Sordo’s i20 Coupe with a spirited downhill drive to the finish of the last special stage in falling snow. Craig Breen finished fifth in a Citroën DS 3 with Elfyn Evans completing the top six in another Fiesta. The Welshman won three stages on Saturday to offset a disappointing start when he dropped several minutes in snow and ice.

iBALL CompBook i360 PRICE `12,999

iBall partnered with Microsoft India and Intel to bring Windows 10 touch based laptops closer to the population of a country that has been growing digitally. The CompBook i360 is one of the devices from that line of products. Once you ‘flip’ it open, this budget latop opens a world of convenience for you. The box-pack contains the laptop, a charger, user manual, warranty card and a USB to microUSB cable. The i360 comes in a rather luxurious looking golden colour which combined with the black coloured keys, trackpad and screen bezel really complement each other and give the laptop an elegant look overall and the material is soft to touch. The laptop gets the Home Basic version of Windows 10 and is also packed with Cortana, the virtual assistant from Microsoft. The reason as to why it is called i360 is because you can flip the screen to a full 360 degrees (without breaking it). This combined with the touch display enables you to operate the laptop in four modes - laptop, tablet, stand and tent. A small slider on the right side of the laptop enables or disables the physical keyboard and trackpad. On top of that the display also comes with screen rotation and you can work in portrait mode too. The 11 inch display with a 1366X768 resolution is ideal for single person use as the more you view it from the sides, the darker it gets. The quality is just about average with slightly less punchy colour reproduction, not so deep blacks and a reflective panel. You can tune the way that the display looks slightly within the settings. The touch response how works like a charm and I do not have any complaints in this department. There is a 0.3MP camera right above the display that can be used for taking decent selfies and can record videos at a maximum 640X480 resolution at 30fps. The i360 runs on an Intel Atom Z8300 that clocks between 1.4 to 1.84GHz with Intel HD graphics. There is 2 GB of DDR3 RAM running at 1600MHz which is enough for this laptop but there is no scope for expanding the RAM. The laptop is meant for many first time users and still provides more features

48 | MOTOWN INDIA | FEBRUARY 2017

than many of the laptop which cost 2-3k more. Some slightly higher end games ran but there were some frame drops here and there. Video files ran smoothly till the 1080p resolution post which the videos did lag and stutter. The storage space stands at a mere 32 GB out of which you get close to 29 GB on the first boot. This can be somewhat problematic for some people but there is some relief in the form of an option of adding a microSD card of up to 64GB. Connectivity options present on the i360 include a WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, a USB 2.0 port, a USB 3.0 port, a mini HDMI input, a place to slot in a microSD card, an ethernet connection port and a single 3.5mm audio jack for headphones and mic. Two speakers situated underneath the laptop provide decent level of sound but are not the loudest and they pack quite a punch. They are not the loudest but get the job done. Similarly the power button situated on the right side is prone to accidental pressing as you shift the laptop while it is on. The only thing that bothered me a bit was the response of the keyboard. I had to put a little extra pressure on the keys while typing. The track pad on the other hand behaved nicely except for a few times where it registered a click at the slightest touch. You get a 10,000mAh battery that can gives an amazing running time of 6-7 hours quite easily and charges completely in about 4.5 hours. At Rs 12,999 first time users will get to experience some technologies in the iBall CompBook 360 that are mostly seen in higher end laptops. Yes it has a few shortcomings like the keyboard response and a few placement choices but goodies like decent power under the hood, an HD touch display, Windows 10 and much more, outweigh the shortcomings by a big difference.

Televisions have come a long way from just being able to play a handful of channels in black and white to basically morphing into giant sized smartphones. Along with the addition of features, the number of zeros in the price have been increased. Noble Skiodo, has taken up the task of delivering TVs packed to the brim with features but still costing much less than the competition. The TV comes nicely packed and in the box you get a user manual and warranty card. There is remote and two batteries to power it and you also get all the wall mounting accessories. The TV boasts some really sharp and sleek looks. It is not too fancy on the styling and rather chooses to be elegant. The large 40inch screen occupies most of the front and there is a decently wide bezel along the sides. The side is very thin as well so do not expect a lot of surface for some good old slapping. Most of the connection points are docked on the left and bottom of the small protrusion at the back of the TV. These include 2 HDMI, 2 USB 2.0, 2 sets of AV inputs, an RJ45 port for LAN and a headphone jack. In case you cannot find your remote you can use the buttons situated on the lower right side of the back of the TV. These buttons allow you to change the volume, channel, source and enter menu. The 1920X1080p resolution fits nicely on the 40 inch LED panel and viewing cable TV or content on the web is a great experience. The viewing angles are wide and you can see the display clearly even from some extreme angles. The screen quality is satisfactory at this price point but if you compare it to some of the more expensive 1080p TVs you will feel that the Noble Skiodo TV lacks a certain amount of life and punch in its picture quality. Sound output is decently loud thanks to the dual 8W speakers built into the TV. The speakers favour the high end more thus one should not expect this TV to output a lot of bass. The hardware that powers the TV include a dual core Cortex A7 processor coupled with 1GB of DDR4 RAM and a Mali 400-2 GPU. This setup facilitates for a mostly lag free experience in the user interface however when I tried running games like Subway Surfers and Temple Run, both got installed but did not go past the ‘Tap to play’ screen. Some apps also crashed all of a sudden. Web browsing and watching videos on YouTube and Netflix was mostly fine and if that is what you want from this TV then you won’t have a problem. The 4GB of onboard storage is not much and thus you will have to connect a pendrive or a hard disk to the TV in order to install apps or store your multimedia content. This TV runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat OS and you do get an app for Play Store and Gmail. You can read and reply to e-mails from the TV itself. The builtin browser lets you surf the internet and the combination of a QWERTY keyboard and mouse like functionality of the remote add to the experience. There is an option for mirroring your mobile screen on to the TV and connecting to WiFi is easy as well. At Rs 24,999 this TV might be a no brainer buy for some people who just want a to get a taste of Smart TVs and enjoy content on a large 1080p screen. The premium looks and a smart remote only add to the deal. However if you want to experience the full capacity of a Smart TV then you would want to skip this one and find a much more expensive alternative.

BENTLEY SUPERSPORTS B55 To celebrate the launch of the Bentley Continental Supersports, Breitling for Bentley has created a limitededition chronograph with a titanium case, carbon dial and a connected movement equipped with functions dedicated to motorsports. Issued in a 500-piece worldwide edition, this Bentley Supersports B55 immediately stands out by its resolutely sporty appearance, with a sturdy and light titanium case framing a dial in carbon fibre – a favourite material in the motorsports arena and featured in many details of the new Continental Supersports. TECHNOLOGY

Audi Q7 Piloted Driving Concept Connectivity was everywhere at CES 2017 – enabling nearly every product category, from self-driving cars and smart cities to digital health and 5G – and a major focus throughout CES conference tracks.

AUDI, NVIDIA TEAM UP TO BRING FULLY AUTOMATED DRIVING Audi has partnered with Nvidia to use artificial intelligence in delivering highly automated vehicles starting year 2020. Audi and Nvidia are long-time partners, merging the best of automotive engineering and visual computing technologies on Audi innovations such as Audi MMI navigation and the Audi virtual cockpit. Later this year Audi, will introduce the world’s first Level 3 automated vehicle equipped with a firstgeneration central driver assistance controller, or zFAS, that integrates Nvidia computing hardware and software. To showcase their progress, Audi and Nvidia developed an Audi Q7 piloted driving concept vehicle, which uses neural networks and end-to-end deep learning on Nvidia’s artificial intelligence platform to navigate a complex course. The vehicle learns from both the road and the driver in every mile it travels and can handle unpredictable situations like roadblocks, construction and changes in weather. This demonstration illustrates the power of end-to-

end deep learning and how it will be one of many neural networks running simultaneously inside of an artificial intelligence car.

BMW I PILOTS AUGMENTED REALITY PRODUCT VISUALISER POWERED BY TANGO BMW i is the first automotive brand in the world to offer customers an interactive, 3-D augmented reality experience of their products in a pilot programme which was rolledout from January 5, 2017. Using Tango, Google’s smartphone augmented reality technology, customers can explore their ideal BMW i3 or i8, as a real-size, interactive visualisation. Piloting initially in a doubledigit number of sales outlets, selected Product Geniuses will be provided with a consumer mobile device which is Tango-

enabled. Using this, they can then support customers to visualize and experience the BMW i products, using augmented reality to create a 3-D image which can be explored interactively: the customer can open the boot or the doors, even getting “inside” the car to take a closer look at the interior. Eric Johnsen, Head of Business Development for Augmented Reality at Google, said, “The thing that sets Tango apart is the fact that it understands the context of the space that it’s in. So the wheels are really on the floor, for example, giving the whole experience a much more realistic feel.” BMWi is the first automotive brand to use Tango to provide customers with this interactive experience. The BMW i Visualiser was designed and developed

by Accenture, integrating BMW i picture data of the vehicles into an app which uses Tango technology. It offers customers a new and interactive way to experience the car, with functions that enable customers to open the door or switch on the lights. In order to keep the user-experience as intuitive and simple as possible, the app is a visualiser instead of a full configurator, where features such as interior and exterior colours or wheel rims can be altered at a touch of the screen. Once the visualisation is complete, the customer can save the data and share it with others, including BMW i sales outlets, via social media, email or QR code.

FEBRUARY 2017 | MOTOWN INDIA | 61

COVER REPORT

Faraday Future FF 91 headquarters in Silicon Valley and Southern California in the US and a company which is part of Formula E motorsport revealed FF 91 (“nine one”), its first production vehicle, at an exclusive event prior to the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Built upon the company’s Variable Platform Architecture (VPA), FF 91 represents a bold new breed of electric mobility that combines supercar performance, precise handling, the comfort of an ultra-luxury passenger vehicle, and a unique collection of intelligent internet features, says a company press release. FF’s proprietary VPA is a flexible powertrain system featuring a monocoque vehicle structure in which the chassis and body are a single form – providing measurable improvements in overall vehicle rigidity, safety and handling. An available all-wheel drive system offers greater traction, control and precise power distribution. The VPA also houses classleading battery technology,

multiple motor and battery configurations, as well as the company’s first patent: the FF Echelon Inverter. FF 91’s powertrain features a multi-motor setup, enabling realtime torque vectoring to the rear wheels. generation vehicle display system – technology that allows drivers to keep their eyes on the road and stay informed like never before. Panasonic Automotive’s Head Up Display (HUD) with Augmented Reality (AR) is one of the world’s most sophisticated systems. It is capable of projecting very large virtual images in the driver’s eye line, using AR to enhance the real world with HUDgenerated imagery. Combined, HUD with AR gives the driver more information and can warn him or her of potential dangers. It also replaces the traditional instrument cluster and with everything running through the HUD, many of the car’s traditional physical controls are replaced too. With drivers subjected to many potential distractions on the move – from making Bluetooth phone calls to receiving dynamic satellite navigation instructions – Panasonic’s new HUD with AR seeks to simplify that workload by keeping the driver’s eyes where they should be: on the road. Panasonic’s technology features a very compact HUD system, but one that it is capable of projecting very large virtual images – up to 12-degrees to the horizontal and 5-degrees to the vertical – into the driver’s visual path at a distance of 10m in front of the vehicle. The Concept-i has resulted in a focus on building an immersive and energetic user experience. It is also able to anticipate people’s needs and improve qualitative experiences by leveraging the power of an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) system. The AI in Concept-i is capable of learning alongside the driver and builds a meaningful and human relationship. The AI is able to recognise driving patterns, schedules, measure emotions which have been mapped against where and when the driver travels around the world. The AI system also leverages advanced automated vehicle technologies to help
