P. THARYAN (ROY) t Motown India we have decided not to go for any invite based drives and rides. The reason is simple, ever since we became a B2C magazine in 2014, we have noticed how car and two wheeler manufacturers are spending obscene amounts of money to pamper journalists, social

media influencers and may more while inviting them for their drives and rides across the globe. Obviously, none of them expect us to write any critical articles. This has led to corruption of a different kind. Free business class air tickets, liquor, rich food, stay in five-star hotels, entertainment of all kinds and to top it, expensive gifts. Freebies rule the roost now. Our conscience is no more allowing that. We shall always look forward to vehicles sent to us at some stage for a review, wherein we can execute our job with a clear conscience. We shall now be emphasising more on customer reviews of vehicles. Very soon we shall be uploading such videos on our channel on YouTube. In the meantime, this December 2019 issue contains several launch reports and feature reports. Globally, we saw the launches of the new Honda City, the new Mercedes Maybach GLS 600 4Matic, the new Jaguar F-Type, the new Lexus LC 500, the Audi RS Q8 and several other vehicles including the unveiling of the Tesla Cybertruck, besides several domestic launches. In the B2B section we are carrying an interesting report on the Maruti Suzuki managed IDTR at Bahadurgarh in Haryana.

TESLA’S CYBERTRUCK garners `180 crore in bookings within 5 days of unveiling

For Tesla, the US-based electric car company, the cash registers seem to be ringing all the time. Sometime on November 22, 2019 the company unveiled its latest product, a weird looking vehicle that goes by the name Cybertruck. By November 27, according to a tweet by the company’s CEO Elon Musk, bookings had crossed 250,000 units for the vehicle. The booking amount could stood at $ 25 million or Rs 180 crore. This is bizarre by any

automotive standards. On twitter, Musk has described the cybertruck as a “Better truck than an F-150, faster than a Porsche 911…” Musk has almost 30 million followers on Twitter. After the unveiling, Musk tweeted that “Cybertruck is our last product unveil for a while, but there will be some (mostly) unexpected technology

announcements next year”. And as for its very plain look with no major aerodynamic styling, he tweeted, “Reason Cybertruck is so planar is that you can’t stamp ultra-hard 30X steel, because it breaks the stamping press”. For the massive bookings, he commented through his tweets that it was achieved “With no advertising & no paid endorsement”. In just two days of the unveiling

in the US, Tesla received 146,000 bookings for the Tesla Cybertruck. The booking amount was around $ 14.6 million. That translates to around Rs 104.50 crore or Rupees 1.04 billion. But a few days later, he again tweeted that bookings or orders had gone up to 200,000 and that meant total deposits too had gone up to $ 20 million (Rs 143 crore). By November 27, the figure had gone up to 250,000 bookings. The numbers are bound to increase with every passing day and the

The booking amount is a mere $100 which is a refundable deposit. It has to be seen how many of these deposits will convert to actual orders for the truck, which is currently priced between $39,900 and $69,900. According to Tesla, the production of the tri-motor

The Tesla Cybertruck was unveiled by Musk at the Tesla Design Center in Hawthorne, California. In fact, during the unveiling while demonstrating as to how tough the armoured glass is, it cracked when it was hit by an iron ball. Musk was quick to tweet on that too, “Franz throws steel ball at

The cheapest version is a single motor with a rear-wheel drive model. The cost of this variant will be $39,900 (Rs 28.58 lakh approx.). It will have a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds (3402kgs) and more than 250 miles (402km) of range. The middle version will be a dual-motor all-wheel drive and will have a towing capacity of more than 10,000 pounds (4536 kgs approx.) and be able to travel more than 300 miles (483km) on a single charge. The dual motor AWD model is priced at $49,900 (Rs 35.74 lakh approx.) The third variant, which is the most expensive at $ 69,900 (Rs 50.06 lakh) will have three electric motors and all-wheel drive. It will have a towing capacity of 14,000 pounds (6350kg) and battery range of more than 500 miles (804km). According to the company, the Cybertruck is designed to have the utility of a truck and the performance of a sports car. The vehicle is built to be durable, versatile and capable,

with exceptional performance both on-road and off-road. The single motor version can do 0 to 60 miles per hour (approx. 100kmph) in less than 6.5 seconds. The dual motor one can complete the same distance in less than 4.5 seconds, while the tri motor one can do so in less than 2.9 seconds. Super-slim pixel LED headlights with subtly updated signature ‘Calligraphy’ J daytime running lights, and sweeping direction indicators, blend perfectly into the ‘liquid metal’ surfacing of the new clamshell bonnet, exaggerating the car’s visual width and accentuating its assertive stance. The new front bumper and subtly enlarged grille deliver even more visual impact and presence. The rear haunches enhance the F-Type’s inherently

dramatic, purposeful form, while the new slender rear lights combine an unmistakable LED chicane signature, inspired by the Jaguar I-Pace all-electric Performance SUV, with subtle monogram pattern detailing and a fine ‘pinstripe’ beneath. The interior combines traditional Jaguar craftsmanship with rich, contemporary materials such as Windsor Leather and satinfinish Noble Chrome. As befits a true sports car, the default mode is characterised by the large central rev counter. This feature and the gearshift light subtly convey the F-Type’s driver-focused character and performance potential. Even before the drive begins, the F-TYPE delights the driver with the visual theatre of flush, deployable door handles and deployable air vents. Pressing the start button brings the car to life with its hallmark exhaust flare as purposeful as ever

All engines – 300PS turbocharged four-cylinder and 450PS and 575PS V8s – feature active exhaust systems, which are switchable either as an option or as standard. Customers who choose the 450PS or 575PS supercharged V8s benefit from the new Quiet Start function, which ensures a more subtle, refined sound – the electrically-actuated bypass valves in the rear silencer remain closed until they automatically open up under load. If desired, Quiet Start can be over-ridden by selecting Dynamic Mode or by pressing the switchable exhaust button before starting the engine.

conditions, while retaining its inherent tractability and dayto-day usability. Performance is exceptional: the benchmark sprint to 60mph takes just 3.5 seconds, while maximum speed is an electronically-limited 186mph. The F-TYPE R’s increased

effectively keeps the road bumps at bay. For the first time there is a dedicated Maybach drive programme that ensures even more comfort. Access and egress are also highly convenient: when the doors are opened, the vehicle is lowered slightly, and an illuminated running board made of anodized aluminum quickly and silently emerges on the respective side of the vehicle. The MercedesMaybach GLS 600 4Matic will go on sale in the U.S. in the second

half of 2020. The Mercedes-Benz star surmounts the hood in the classic way, while the fine, vertical chrome struts of the Maybach radiator grille create a pinstripe effect. Effective chrome highlights around the side windows, and the chrome inserts in the side sill panels, lend dignity and elegance to the profile. The 22 or 23-inch wheels were developed exclusively for this model, with the 23-inch version echoing the pinstripe theme. The tailpipe trim elements with

a small cross rib emphasize the model’s identity as a MercedesMaybach. The same applies to the brand emblem, which is positioned at various points such as on the D-pillar. As a special, Maybach-specific feature, two-tone paintwork is available in eight different, elegant color combinations. Another eye-catching feature of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS is the electronically extending running boards. They make accessing and leaving the high seating position both convenient

and safe. With surfaces of anodized aluminum laced with black rubber strips, illuminated in the dark and particularly wide in the area of the rear doors, they ensure a very special visual appeal. When in their retracted state, the running boards are concealed behind the side sill panels. If a rear door is opened, the running board on the side concerned automatically swings into position in around one second. This default setting can be changed using a special menu in the MBUX infotainment system.

Lexus engineers relied on computeraided engineering (CAE) analysis and real-world driving evaluation to match the driving qualities of its coupe counterpart, and the extensive research and development yielded impressive

platforms, as a reduction of un-sprung weight in the front suspension improves the overall stroke. In the rear, engineers were able to further enhance structural rigidity by reshaping and relocating the rear suspension brace tower. Weight was reduced in the rear of the vehicle by utilising a lightweight die-cast aluminum suspension brace, while a performance dampener is employed to enhance ride comfort. Drivers of the front engine, rear-wheel-drive LC Convertible can expect similar breath-taking performance to the coupe, thanks to the powerful drivetrain combination of the 5.0-litre V8 engine paired with the seamless Direct-Shift 10-speed automatic transmission. The naturally aspirated, direct-injection V8 is rated to produce 471 horsepower at 7,100 rpm and 540Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm. The LC Convertible’s soft-top design features an innovative folding mechanism that includes a tonneau cover for when it is stored. The design allowed engineers to focus on accentuating the sleek lines of the convertible without significant intrusions to the trunk and cabin space that can come with a heavier, bulkier hard top. The coupe’s curves are further highlighted with the silhouette of the convertible through a few key changes. At the rear, the trunk is accentuated with a “kicked up” design that lifts its profile slightly, while the surface of the spoiler is laterally broadened to emphasise the low, wide stance of the car. The centre brake light is now integrated into the trunk lid, unlike the coupe where it rests on the top of the rear windshield. The four-layer soft top is designed to retain the flowing roofline of the coupe without the supporting frame visible through the fabric. The roof material itself was carefully selected and manufactured to ensure for optimal tension, to minimize wrinkling and improve sound insulation. The roof can be opened or closed at speeds up to 31 mph, while an animated display on the instrumentation panel shows the top’s progress. NEW FERRARI ROMA V8 2+COUPE unveiled in Rome Italian car maker Ferrari has unveiled the new Ferrari Roma, a V8 2+ coupe. Ferrari’s engineers developed several leading-edge technologies, most notably a mobile rear spoiler integrated into the rear screen designed to retain the car’s formal elegance when retracted and guarantee the downforce essential for the Ferrari Roma’s performance by automatically deploying at high speeds. The Prancing Horse’s new 2+coupé sports a V8 turbo engine that punches out 620 cv @ 7,500 rpm, making it the most powerful in its segment. It features Variable Boost Management for instantaneous throttle response. With the adoption of Gasoline Particulate Filters, meticulous attention was also focused on the sound of

the exhaust system which has been completely redesigned, removing the silencers and introducing new bypass valves. The car’s new 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox is more compact and 6 kg lighter than its 7-speed predecessor. As well as reducing fuel consumption and emissions, shifts are faster and smoother which makes the car even more responsive on the open road, but also especially comfortable in town and during stop and start driving situations. The Ferrari Roma’s chassis benefits from the modular technology developed by Ferrari for its new generation models. Both body shell and chassis have been redesigned to incorporate the latest weight reduction and advanced production technologies. In

fact, 70% of its components are entirely new. The mid-frontengined 2+ Ferrari Roma has the best weight/power ratio in its segment (2.37 kg/cv)which enhances handling dynamics and responsiveness. The full-LED adaptive headlights are traversed by a horizontal light strip that hints at the structure beneath the car’s skin, bringing a sense of tension to the entire circumference of the car. The wraparound rear screen incorporates an active aero device while at the rear you have twin taillight assembly. For the Ferrari Roma’s cabin, the Ferrari Styling Centre designers developed a new formal approach that involved the creation of two separate

cells, one each for driver and passenger, in an evolution of the dual cockpit concept that embraces the entire cabin rather than just the dashboard as was previously the case. The 16” digital instrument cluster provides all the necessary information, while the central display with an 8.4” vertical screen and a new passenger display are exceptionally intuitive and user-friendly. The new Ferrari key with “Comfort Access” function allows the driver to open the car by touching a button next to the new flush handle in the door. Lastly, the Matrix LED headlights and optional Ferrari advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive Cruise Control, make day-today and longer journeys a very relaxing experience.

CAR NEWS

The all-new Audi RS Q8 made its global debut at the 2019 Los Angeles International Auto Show. The Audi RS Q8 combines the genes of a high-performance RS model with the practicality of an SUV and the dynamic design of an Audi coupe. The all-new Audi RS Q8 features a biturbo V8 engine. The RS Q8 recently became the fastest production SUV to lap the renowned Nßrburgring racetrack with an official time of 7 minutes and 42.2 seconds. The 4.0-litre V8 in the RS Q8 delivers 600hp and 800 Nm of torque. The turbocharged engine with direct injection accelerates the large SUV from 0-100 km/h (in 3.8 seconds and achieves a top track speed of 250 km/h or 305 km/h when equipped with the RS ceramic brakes. Its 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 ignition sequence gives the 4.0 TFSI a sportily voluminous sound. As is typical for the RS models, the dual exhaust system features an impressive oval tailpipe on each side. The driver can influence the engine’s sound via the Audi drive select system. The optional RS sport exhaust system with black tailpipe trims offers an even sportier sound. The biturbo V8 in the new RS Q8 combines maximum performance and high efficiency. Its mild-hybrid system (MHEV) is based on a 48-volt main electrical system. The core of the MHEV is a belt alternator-starter connected to the crankshaft. During deceleration and braking, it can recover up to 12 kW of power and store it in the compact lithium-ion battery. If the driver takes their foot off the accelerator at a speed between 55 and 160 km/h, the drive management selects one of two solutions depending on the driving situation and the current setting of the Audi drive select dynamic handling system. The new RS Q8 recuperates or coasts for up to 40 seconds with the engine off. The belt alternator starter starts the engine within fractions of a second when the accelerator is actuated. MHEV technology allows for start/ stop operation at a speed of up to 22 km/h. The mild-hybrid system is connected to the camera sensors for even greater efficiency.

CAR NEWS

When stopped, the engine starts up while the brake pedal is still depressed as soon as the front camera detects that the vehicle in front of the new RS Q8 begins to move. The interplay of the MHEV components improves ride comfort and also has the potential to reduce fuel consumption in everyday driving by as much as 0.8 liters per 100 kilometers. Another efficiency module on board is the cylinder on demand (COD) system. At low to intermediate load and rpm in the upper gears, it deactivates cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8 by switching off fuel injection and ignition and closing the intake and exhaust valves. The switching process takes just milliseconds, and is virtually imperceptible in the car. During four-cylinder operation, the operating points of the active cylinders shift to higher loads and map points with high efficiency, while the deactivated cylinders run largely loss-free as gas springs. They

36 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2019

are reactivated immediately when the driver presses the accelerator. The power of the 4.0 TFSI flows to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system via the standard eight-speed Tiptronic transmission. Wheel-selective torque control can help enhance handling by ensuring additional traction across each axle through individual-wheel braking application. During dynamic cornering, the quattro sport rear differential distributes drive torque between the rear wheels as required. This active torque vectoring helps improve traction, stability and dynamics. The adaptive air suspension with controlled damping means the RS Q8 is equally at home on or off the paved road. Its RS-specific damper tuning offers drivers a choice between long-distance comfort and high performance. The electromechanical active roll stabilization (EAWS) minimizes body roll while cornering at speed. The all-

wheel steering allows for greater agility at low speeds and improved stability at high speeds. With variable ground clearance, short overhangs and hill descent control, the new Audi RS Q8 can carry on confidently when paved roads end. Drivers can customize their driving experience through the standard Audi drive select system with seven different profiles: comfort, auto, dynamic, allroad, offroad and the individually configurable RS-specific modes RS1 and RS2, which can be activated directly via the “‘RS-MODE’” button on the steering wheel. The Audi drive select setting influences the engine and transmission management, power steering, the air suspension, all-wheel steering and engine sound.

EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR DESIGN With the octagonal Singleframe and the RS-specific radiator grille, the RS Q8 has an even more dominant appearance. This

combined with the front air inlets in gloss black and the blade in matte aluminum perfectly highlights the athletic character of the large SUV. The dynamic roofline ends in gently inclined D-pillars, which are supported by the wide, pronounced wheel arches, paying homage to the vehicle’s quattro DNA, creating an unmistakable Audi silhouette. An RS roof-edge spoiler provides a striking finish at the top and provides downforce on the rear axle for improved balance at high speeds. The interior of the new RS Q8 features a clean and refined design. The slim instrument panel and strong horizontal lines convey a feeling of spaciousness. The central element in the cockpit is the MMI touch response system. With its black-panel look, it almost dissolves into a large, black surface when switched off. Special RS displays in the Audi virtual cockpit and MMI display provide

information such as output, g-forces, lap times, temperature, torque and tire pressure. The shift light display prompts the driver to upshift when the rev limit is reached. The optional head-up display also offers several RSspecific graphics.

The RS Q8 further demonstrates its everyday usability in the rear. A sliding three-seat rear bench is standard. With the seat backrests folded down, the luggage compartment under the power rear hatch holds up to 60.7 cubic feet.

Kawasaki unveils electric motorcycle technology with ‘Rideology’ approach The recently concluded annual EICMA show in Milan, Italy witnessed a media event hosted by Kawasaki at which six new machines for the 2020 model year were highlighted by Yuji Horiuchi - President of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Motorcycle & Engine Company. In addition Horiuchi unveiled an Electric Vehicle (EV) concept and explained its background. Revealing that Kawasaki had been conducting EV research for many years, Horiuchi noted that KHI research had so far been based on a mid-capacity style machine with more “rider features” than current

EV machines in the market. Possessing the equivalent of 20kw for acceleration on demand and a cruising output akin to 10kw, the EV project has been tested extensively at the Kawasaki owned Autopolis track in southern Japan as well as in real life urban environments. He continued; “We have focused on the riding sensation during road testing combining an electric power source which enables high level of flexibility in torque and power delivery - with gear-shifting capability. The result is a machine delivering good rider

40 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2019

feeling in line with our overall mission of Rideology”. A compact machine with a size similar to a Ninja 650, the EV bike uses familiar middleweight Kawasaki road bike suspension and brakes plus the same trellis type chassis technology as used on many Ninja and Z family machines. At the core of the 219kg vehicle is a battery pack rechargeable via a quick CHAdeMo style charging system or a conventional 100-240V domestic supply. In this way the EV machine follows current convention

but the Kawasaki “fun to ride” Rideology approach dictated further thinking. The result is an electric powered two-wheeler with a range of approximately 100km with attributes from a conventional machine such as a clutch and four speed gearbox. In this way it would be expected for the vehicle to be attractive to the current profile of Kawasaki owner and to fulfil Kawasaki’s Rideology philosophy. Mooted as simply a research project, KHI has stated clearly that there are no plans to add an EV bike to its range in the near future.

These battery packs will be used in a host of non-automotive applications such as home inverters, commercial & industrial UPS, and renewable energy storage.

Deceptive cheer for Forging and Auto Component industry The apex body of the forging industry in India, the Association of Indian Forging Industry (AIFI) has expressed concern over the lack of demand with respect to fresh orders from the automotive sector. With the ripple down effect of slumping automobile sales, the forging industry is facing the heat with a sharp decline in demand which has resulted in substantial production cuts. With an annual output of about 30 Lakh MT, the Indian forging industry has about close to 400 forging units, of which 83 percent can broadly be categorised as tiny and small enterprises. While 9 percent are medium sized, the remaining being large scale.

than the number of whole ales. This increase comes after a drop-in sale for last two quarters, driven by higher discounts offered by the OE’s (Original Equipment)to allow the liquidation of inventories.

S. Muralishankar President, AIFI While SMEs contribute 30 percent of forging production, the medium and large-scale units contribute 70 percent. With a total production worth Rs 45000-50000 crore the forging industry provides direct employment to more than 300,000 people in the country along with an additional 60000 contract labourers.

Speaking on the issue S Muralishankar, PresidentAIFI noted, “The recent slew of festivals saw few car manufacturers reporting a decent increase in sales at the retail level. As a result, we witnessed inventory clearance at the dealer level. The figures during the festive period clearly indicate higher retail sales

“The production and demand at the manufacturing level haven’t seen any upward movement because of which the forging and autocomponent sector continue to reel under the Auto slowdown. Currently, there is a huge inventory build-up due to poor demand and to curb this, many forging units have been making proportionate cuts in terms of working hours and production. If this scenario stretches further, we anticipate more production loss and job cuts.”

Safety is a core competency and a core value for Daimler and its automotive brands, which include the world famous ‘Mercedes-Benz’. MercedesBenz is renowned worldwide for developing highly sophisticated safety systems. On Indian roads, approximately 150,000 people die every year of road accidents, largely caused due to ignorance of safety norms and rules. Safe Roads was hence conceptualised by Daimler in an effort to reduce this startling fatality rate on Indian roads, by creating more awareness on road safety. Daimler is convinced that such initiatives can begin an era of road safety awareness that supports a new culture of road safety for the Indian people. Manu Saale, Managing Director & CEO, MBRDI stated, “At Mercedes-Benz, safety is an integral part of our brand promise and with Safe Roads, our attempt is to promote and make roads safer for every user. Given the understanding of road safety scenario in India, we laid the foundation by launching the Safe Roads nationwide initiative four years ago. Our journey in promoting road safety across the country, first, through road shows in eight cities and now with the Safe Roads India Summit, has been very fulfilling. This biennial Summit is a significant step to make our initiative touch a larger audience through a sustainable and more effective manner. It’s a conglomeration of automotive safety experts from India and across the globe, sharing and exchanging insights and latest developments in the field of safety through live exhibits and expert speaks.” Martin Schwenk, Managing

Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said, “Safety has remained core to Mercedes-Benz’s DNA and it is one of the key reasons why customers trust in our brand. Apart from presenting some of the safest vehicles across our range, we also keep raising the benchmark in the domain of safety through innovative safety features for our customers. Mercedes-Benz India has been introducing novel safety measures in its product offerings that enhances safety of the passengers. “Our latest contribution towards customer safety is the introduction of the ‘e-Call’ service, which we launched with our connected car application ‘Mercedes me connect’ in India. This is the first-ever ‘e-Call’ service in the industry with the aim of reducing fatalities by enabling faster and specific assistance in case of an accident. The eCall service can immediately deploy on-site emergency assistance upon receiving data set from the affected vehicle’s embedded e-Call unit, and also verbal information from the passenger. This will be available 24/7 and 365 days per year and will cover 27 states and 5 union territories in India. We strongly believe ‘Safe Roads’ initiative will be able to underline all these aspects of road safety comprehensively and make Indian roads, ‘safer’.” Satyakam Arya, Managing Director& CEO, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles mentioned, “We at Daimler India Commercial Vehicles show our commitment to road safety in India by introducing global technologies that revolutionize the CV industry. with crash-tested steel cabins. We will continue to develop and promote safety technologies that save Indian lives through our products and the Safe Roads initiative.” Jochen Feese, Head of Accident Research, Safety Concepts and Child Safety at Mercedes-Benz AG said, “Safety is our core brand value and is a part of the DNA for Mercedes-Benz. That is precisely one of the reasons for building the ESF 2019. We have done so to show the ideas and

concepts on which our safety experts are currently working in research and development. One highlight is the cooperative behaviour and communication with the environment: the ESF takes care of all road users surrounding it.” Child safety is another important field for the safety engineers. Already in the previous edition of Safe Roads India Summit 2017, the focus was on ‘Child safety and vulnerable roads users in India’ – which made an impact across

the country. “With the ESF 2019, we are also promoting our idea for a connected child seat with PRE-SAFE® functions. In dangerous driving conditions, Pre-Safe Child can reduce the belt slack by tightening the child seat belt. Furthermore, side bolsters extend on the door side to provide better lateral support of the seat. These measures can help to significantly reduce the risk of injury for the child”, Jochen Feese added.

In 2017, through MercedesBenz’ nationwide CSR efforts, more than 15,000 children – the future road users -- from New Delhi, Bangalore and Pune received training on road safety measures. At the Summit, 300 school children and 200 college students from New Delhi attended the event. The college students were given a ‘First Responder Training’ by NGO partner Indian Head Injury Foundation.

Vehicle ESF 2019 is safety on wheels. The research vehicle is packed full of surprising and innovative tech and features – coloured lights, projective panels and a warning triangle robot. The car represents how much safer the future of mobility can be. Mercedes-Benz engineers have gone way beyond that with the ESF 2019, exploring new technology to protect passengers and others even more. The ESF 2019 is designed to be intuitive in order to provide

a safety benefit not only to its passengers, but also to the surroundings.

CHILD SAFETY SEAT: It is one of the most important purchases you’ll make for your child when you buy a car. A child safety seat is designed specifically to protect children from injury or death during collisions. • All children aged 12 years and under should be seated in the appropriate child seat and positioned in the rear seat of

the car. • Airbags can kill young children riding in the front seat • Never place a rear-facing car seat in the front seat or in front of an airbag • Appropriate child seats should be used based on child’s size and weight

BODY IN WHITE (BIW): A ‘Body in White’ (BiW) passenger car exhibit highlights some of the core elements of a car structure which have high tensile strength that can absorb most of the energy during a

crash and minimise passenger car intrusions. In addition, safety sensors and restraint system components are visible.

ALCOHOL GOGGLES: Alcohol goggles provide a unique experience. Wearing these special types of glasses simulates the common ‘walkthe-line’ activity which causes loss of balance and delayed reaction times. Visitors could feel their susceptibility to impairments and realise the potential severe consequences due to alcohol consumption.

BMW Group secures long-term battery cell needs The BMW Group is forging ahead with electromobility and deepening its existing business relationships with battery cell manufacturers CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited) and Samsung SDI. The original CATL order volume of four billion euros announced in mid-2018 will now be increased to 7.3 billion euros (contract duration from 2020 to 2031), with 4.5 billion euros for the BMW Group and 2.8 billion euros for the Chinese production site of the BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. (BBA) joint venture in Shenyang. The BMW Group is the first customer of the CATL battery cell plant currently under construction in Erfurt, Germany. “We strongly supported and played an active part in establishing CATL in Germany,” said Dr. Andreas Wendt, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Purchasing and Supplier Network. The BMW Group has also signed a long-term supply contract for its fifth-generation electric drive trains with its second battery cell supplier, Samsung SDI. The contract, with value of 2.9 billion euros, extends from 2021 to 2031. “In this way, we are securing our long-term battery cell needs. Every cell generation is awarded in global competition to the leading manufacturer from both a technology and a business perspective. This ensures we always have access to the best possible cell technology,” Wendt announced at a supplier event today in Seoul, South Korea. The BMW Group will source the cobalt needed as a key raw material for cell production directly from mines in Australia and Morocco and make

it available to CATL and Samsung SDI. The same applies to lithium, which the BMW Group will also source directly from mines, including from Australia. This gives the company full transparency over where both raw materials come from. Compliance with environmental standards and respect for human rights have the highest priority. The BMW Group’s fifth-generation electric drive trains from 2021 on will also be produced entirely without using rare earths. “This means we will no longer be dependent on their availability,” explained Wendt.

EXTENSIVE IN-HOUSE EXPERTISE IN BATTERY CELL TECHNOLOGY The BMW Group possesses extensive in-house expertise throughout the entire value chain for battery cell

technology. In-house battery production takes place at BMW Group Plants Dingolfing (Germany) and Spartanburg (USA), and at the BBA plant in Shenyang (China). The BMW Group has also localised battery production in Thailand and is working with the Dräxlmaier Group in this area. On 14 November, the company opened its Battery Cell Competence Centre in Munich. The aim of the competence centre is to advance battery cell technology and introduce it into production processes. The company invested a total of 200 million euros in the location, which is set to create up to 200 jobs. The production of battery cell prototypes makes it possible to analyse and fully understand cell value creation

processes. “Whether we then produce the cells ourselves at a later date, will largely depend on how the supplier market develops,” according to Wendt. The BMW Group has formed a joint technology consortium with Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt and Umicore, a Belgian developer of battery materials, for the purpose of developing the cell technology crucial to electromobility. The cooperation will focus on creating a complete, sustainable value chain for battery cells in Europe, extending from development and production all the way to recycling. Recycling of battery

components plays a decisive role in closing the materials cycle as far as possible and maximising reuse of raw materials as demand for battery cells grows.

BMW GROUP IS A PIONEER IN ELECTROMOBILITY – 25 ELECTRIFIED MODELS BY 2023 By 2023, the BMW Group will have 25 electrified models in its line-up. The basis for this is created by flexible vehicle architectures for fully-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and models with combustion engines that enable the company to respond quickly to changing conditions. More than

half of the 25 models will be fully electric. The BMW Group will double its sales of electrified vehicles between 2019 and 2021. The company expects to see a steep growth curve up to 2025: Global sales of electrified vehicles should increase by an average of over 30 percent every year. In Europe, the company is also following an ambitious growth logic: The aim is to increase the percentage of electrified vehicles in the new vehicle fleet by a quarter in 2021 and a third in 2025; by 2030, they should account for half of sales volumes. As an e-mobility pioneer,

the BMW Group is already a leading supplier of electrified vehicles. By the end of 2019, the company aims to have more than half a million vehicles with fully-electric or plug-in hybrid drive trains on the roads. Within two years, the BMW Group will offer five fully-electric series-production vehicles: Alongside the BMW i3, with more than 160,000 units built to date, this year will see the start of production of the fully-electric MINI at Plant Oxford. This will be followed in 2020 by the fully-electric BMW iX3 from Shenyang (China) and, in 2021, by the BMW iNEXT, which will be produced in Dingolfing and the BMW i4 from Plant Munich.

n the face of it the Indian commercial vehicle industry may look glamorous and exciting with its good looking buses and large trucks. But you take a closer look into the lives of those behind the wheels of these mammoth machines, you realise their story is one of stress, risks of all kinds, mental and physical discomfort and lack of respect. And to make matters worse, many of them are ill trained too and there are hardly any organised place to receive training. It is here that Maruti Suzuki, the largest car manufacturer in India and the makers of some very popular cars, has stepped in to do some good. The company has since 1999 been relentlessly training people in the country to drive cars, buses and trucks in categories known as Light Motor Vehicles or LMVs and Heavy Motor Vehicles or HMVs. Incidentally, in the financial year 2018-19, the company trained around 4,00,000 people at the 7 Institutes of Driving & Traffic Research (IDTRs) and 16 road safety knowledge centers (RSKC). These have been set up in association with the state governments of Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Bihar and Maharashtra for these initiatives. In fiscal 2018-19 it has invested around Rs 1.54 billion towards Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR initiatives that are focused towards community development, road safety and skill development

ROAD SAFETY AND IDTRS As part of road safety, the company has set up several IDTRs where people are trained to drive anything from a simple car to a big bus or truck. Training is offered to existing as well as new drivers of private as well as commercial vehicles. Also,

specialised training is given to operate forklifts. Additionally, traffic violators and license seekers are also provided guidance. We visited the IDTR at Bahadurgarh in Haryana which Maruti Suzuki has set up with the assistance of the Transport Department of Haryana. Haryana has two IDTRs, one here at Bahadurgarh and the other at Rohtak both of which have been operational since 2011. The course fee is a mere Rs 7500 + GST for an HMV learner and only Rs 3500 for an LMV learner. The former is a 30-day course while the latter is of 21 days. We came to know that there is a huge interest among youth in Haryana to learn HMVs because both at Rohtak as well as Bahadurgarh, the waiting period for admission to a learner course is several months. One may be curious as to how does an IDTR function, who gives the money, what are the revenues and how is the money utilised, because afterall there are a lot of vehicles, equipment, etc to be bought, maintained, salaries to be paid to the staff, etc not to forget acres of land to be acquired? Interestingly Motown India learnt that a handful of senior

Maruti Suzuki full time employees are overseeing these IDTRs and they are paid directly by Maruti Suzuki and they are permanent employees of the car company. They act as the supervisors and are answerable to the top management of the company as well as senior officials of the state government. At the IDTR Bahadurgarh for example, the land is provided by the Haryana state government and it is roughly around 14 acres. Maruti Suzuki chipped in with the initial cash to set it up and run the institution and pay the salaries of the staff and for acquisition of the entire equipment, vehicles etc. After that everything depends on the money generated by the institution. Maruti Suzuki is however always there like a lender of the last resort typically the Reserve Bank of India in the system. If there is a shortfall in revenues, the company is committed to chip

in. But it takes out none for itself. Today after years of persistent hard work, the efforts of the various state governments and of course the commitment of Maruti Suzuki, the IDTRs are making revenue of almost Rs 140 million per annum and there is quite a surplus fund running into several millions of rupees with them. The money is continuously used for upgrading technology and equipment, besides salaries for the staff and maintenance.

HARYANA IDTR NETWORK The Haryana IDTR network today consists of 2 IDTRs and around 18 road safety knowledge centres spread across several places in Haryana. All these are run with the help of Haryana Transport Department officials and the expenses are met by the revenues generated by the IDTRs. Let us now pour through some statistics. In the year 2018, 3159 people had undergone training at the two IDTRs in Haryana for HMV license. Bahadurgarh had 1564 applicants. If one takes into account all the training for learners, refreshers courses and stall evaluation then there were 63,705 applicants. If one were to include road safety trainings at RSKCs, then the number goes up to 243810.

At IDTR it is called Aritra a word meaning navigation or one who shows the right path. It is basically a camera based image processing technology for quality driving training and was developed by IDTR in 2016 with investment from Maruti Suzuki. Here around 27 cameras are installed across the identified path and using go mapping and image sensing technology, a live tracking of the vehicle is done

In order to get a HMV license, the first step is to apply for the course. All transactions for payment are chasless. You have to submit proof of your identity with a copy of your Aadhar card or any other government issued ID. The course consists of several processes which are easy to understand. The technique of training is what is more interesting. The institute initially gives training on a simulator for an aspirant to learn and test his skills. Theory classes, yoga classes follow. bus drivers in the country. It’s not about being a lady or a man; it’s all about being a capable truck or bus driver. That would mean good driving, safe driving and all this will contribute so much to road safety. And that is what Maruti Suzuki is striving for, road safety in a country that has one of the world’s highest number of road accidents and fatalities. For the company, it’s just not about making cars; it’s also about contributing to a safer world.

Haryana woman shows her grit in acquiring HMV license Haryana, the northern state of India, has given birth to several girls who have made an indelible mark in our society. Wrestlers Sakshi Malik and the Phogat sisters are names everyone knows. In fact, Geeta Phogat was the first woman from India to win a gold in wrestling at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The accomplishment of the Phogat sisters inspired the very popular Bollywood movie Dangal starring the versatile actor Aamir Khan. The late Kalpana Chawla was a famous and popular American astronaut, and the first woman of Indian descent to go to space. Her hometown was Karnal in Haryana. Haryana at one time was a state infamous for female foeticide, which in essence meant killing the girl child even before she is born. That resulted in a skewed sex ratio at birth in the state. According a data compiled by the Women and Child Development Department, Haryana, in 2012 in the state on an average

had 743 girls to every 1000 boys. But then because of various government initiatives this ratio remarkably improved to an average of 977 girls for every 1000 boys by August 2019. Motown India now brings to you another real life story about a lady, barely 5’ 2’’ who has come out as a clear winner in a profession dominated by tall and burly men. Yes, we are talking about heavy motor vehicle drivers i.e. those driving big trucks and buses. This is the story about Reena Barak who has successfully completed her training for driving heavy motor vehicles at the Institute of Driving & Traffic Research (IDTR) at Bahadurgarh in the state of Haryana. IDTRs across the country are managed by the transport departments of the respective state governments and India’s leading car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki. Reena works at a charitable institution in Haryana’s Rohtak district.

She is the first female candidate at the IDTR at Bahadurgarh and took part in the training along with several men at the institution. Reena not only was successful in completing her course, but did so in one go without failing a single test, whether it was practical or theory. Officials at IDTR told Motown India that several men are unable to accomplish this despite several attempts. Obviously that also means that Reena has scored where men have failed. Reena works for MTFC or Make the Future of Country Education Society, an NGO based in Rohtak in Haryana. This NGO educates poor children in the district. The motto of the NGO is “Eradicate Illiteracy, spread education. It also says learn and teach. True to the spirit of the NGO, Reena has leant, and learnt quite well. Reena was inspired to drive by her sister Neena who has already acquired a license to drive buses one year back. Reena already knows how to drive a van, a tractor and a bus.

Reena’s father passed away when she was in the 10th standard in school. But she recalls fondly that her father was proud of his daughters and would say that he has got sons and not daughters. Reena got married when she was in her first year in BA but then she continued to study and is now doing her MSW or Master of Social Work.

she drove it like a pro and her senior at the NGO noticed that she could drive a bus well, even though she had no formal training or had a license. He felt that she needed to get a formal training and get a license. That led her to the gates of the IDTR in Bahadurgarh managed by the Transport Department of Haryana along with Maruti Suzuki.

now. She can now ferry the poor children who come to study at the NGO in her bus. Earlier they had to be brought to the NGO in 3-wheeler which could only accommodate few children. Besides, she also feels that since she can drive, the NGO can save money on a driver’s salary and as a driver she can take special care of the children too.

As a child Reena played games that are usually the favourite among boys like playing with a bat and ball or flying kites. From a young age she believed that if boys could do a task so could the girls. Now she cooks food and even drives a bus for the NGO. Driving a bus came naturally to her. She used to drive a van but when she was given the key to a bus,

After a formal training at the IDTR, Reena has acquired a certificate from IDTR. This will now be shown at the government licensing authority where she will get a proper driving license to drive Heavy Motor Vehicles or HMVs.

Reena Barak’s story will surely inspire many such women to come forward and take up driving HMVs or LMVs as a profession and at IDTR they can be rest assured that there will be no distinction between boys and girls, rich or poor, powerful or not so powerful when it comes to acquiring driving skills.

She is happy for more than one reason

Nissan has announced a substantial investment in advanced technologies and equipment for its factories around the world. These innovations will help deliver a new generation of electrified and intelligent automobiles that embody the company’s Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision, while also making production operations more flexible, efficient and sustainable. Following an initial investment of about 33 billion yen at the company’s Tochigi Plant in Japan, with work to finish in 2020, the technologies will be rolled out across factories globally. Since 1933, Nissan has honed its ability to mass-produce vehicles to the highest possible standards. Over

the same period, the company’s takumi master technicians have perfected a range of complex or delicate processes requiring a high degree of craftsmanship. This latest investment represents a necessary rethinking of conventional car making and tackles the structural and technical challenges of producing vehicles that will lead the industry in a new era of electrification and intelligence. “We’re facing an unprecedented evolution in the capabilities of our vehicles,” said Hideyuki Sakamoto, Nissan’s executive vice president for manufacturing and supply chain management. “Our job is to make this evolution a reality by

rethinking how we build cars. This will also mean shifting the efforts of our expert technicians from techniques they’ve already mastered to new, unexplored areas,” he added.

NISSAN’S INVESTMENTS WILL ADDRESS A NUMBER OF KEY ISSUES: BUILDING THE FUTURE OF MOBILITY Nissan’s next generation of cars will be electrified, intelligent and connected. This adds new complexity to design and construction, requiring major advancements in production engineering. One such advancement is the “universal powertrain mounting

system” developed by Nissan’s Production Engineering Research and Development Center. Mounting powertrains in cars is a lengthy process and strenuous work for assembly line staff, who must install multiple components in sequence. Nissan’s new system uses an automated pallet to mount the entire powertrain at once. The system measures the car’s dimensions in real time during mounting, and the pallet makes micro-adjustments accordingly. This ensures that powertrains are installed to within a small fraction of a millimeter’s accuracy. The new system is also highly adaptable. The same pallet can mount three types of powertrains

(internal combustion engine, e-POWER and pure electric), and can assemble and mount 27 different powertrain module combinations. BRINGING CRAFTSMANSHIP TO ROBOTS Nissan has developed certain specialist skills and processes that, until now, could only be performed by trained craftspeople. Through an intensive collaborative process, Nissan’s craftspeople and engineers have digitized parts of these delicate processes and “trained” robots to perform them around the clock. This will allow the craftspeople to focus on new, unexplored areas of expertise. One example of a task that can

TECHNOLOGY

now be automated is sealing – applying a paste-like material to seams around the vehicle body to prevent water intrusion. Sealing is generally done by experts, as the necessary dexterity and speed can be acquired through training but isn’t easy to replicate. In addition to automating the process of applying sealant, Nissan’s engineers analyzed the precise movements and gestures of trained workers when smoothing and finishing sealant, and calculated the pressure applied at each stage. Next, they converted this information to instructions for robots and made further refinements through extensive trial and error. As a result, robots can now apply and finish sealant quickly and precisely along even the most complex of seams. MAKING BETTER WORKPLACES WITH ROBOTS Robots can now perform certain strenuous tasks efficiently, freeing workers to perform more valuable jobs elsewhere on the line. This also improves ergonomics, making factories easier places to work. One example is the installation of a

headliner, the overhead layer of material on the inside of a car’s roof. Workers must enter each vehicle’s cabin to perform this physically demanding job. The task has become even harder as cars come with more connected features, adding to the number of devices in and around the headliners. Nissan’s solution is to use robots to insert the headliner through the front of the vehicle

and then fasten it. Sensors monitor changes in pressure and use a proprietary logic system to determine when the clips have snapped securely into place. LOWER ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT Nissan is also working to reduce the environmental impact of building cars. Changes in the painting process are especially noticeable. Car bodies must usually be painted at high temperatures, because the viscosity of paint

is hard to control at lower temperatures. By contrast, bumpers are made of plastic, so they need to be painted at low temperatures. This requires two separate painting processes for one vehicle. Nissan has developed a water-based paint that maintains the right viscosity at low temperatures, so that bodies and bumpers can be painted together. This will cut carbon dioxide emissions from the process by 25%. Nissan will also use a waterfree painting booth that makes it possible to collect all waste paint and reuse it in other production processes. “These new technologies and innovations are at the heart of the company’s competitiveness,” said Sakamoto, adding that “They will be rolled out globally in the coming years, underpinning the future of Nissan Intelligent Mobility and reinforcing our status as a leader in technology.”

Mercedes-Benz Lab1886 supports Rolls-Royce Power Systems in pilot project for stationary fuel-cell systems Lab1886, the innovation unit for business models within MercedesBenz AG, is now supporting drive and energy system provider Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG in a pilot project in the field of stationary energy supply systems. Zero emissions, long ranges, short refuelling times and a broad application spectrum from passenger cars and buses, to commercial vehicles: the arguments in favour of the fuel cell speak for themselves and make the technology an integral part of the Mercedes-Benz drive strategy. Its potential, with regard to the transformation of energy and transportation, is huge. However, hydrogen and the fuel cell have clear strengths in applications other than just for mobility: for example, as a derivative for conventional generators for (emergency) power supply – a technology for which Mercedes-Benz is already able to relate to with solid experience in area of development. On the basis of automotive fuel cells, a holistic concept for future sustainable and independent (emergency) power supply is expected to be established over the coming months. This is a prime example of the symbiosis of battery and fuel-cell technology and a key step on the road to CO2 neutrality. Fuel-cell technology is an integral part of the Mercedes-Benz’s powertrain strategy. Like no other company, it has vast experience across generations of hydrogenpowered electric vehicles. MercedesBenz has completed millions of test kilometres around the globe and, with the Mercedes-Benz GLC

F-CELL fuel-cell plugin hybrid (weighted hydrogen consumption: 0.91 kg/100 km, weighted CO2 emissions: 0 g/ km, weighted power consumption: 18 kWh/100 km)1, it has recently set a further technological milestone. “Innovation was and remains one of the main drivers of our sustainable success. Cross-sector dialogue and cooperation are absolutely crucial here. We are extremely delighted that as part of the pilot project we are able to support Rolls-Royce Power Systems on a further key step towards a successful energy revolution outside the car itself, too”, says Susanne Hahn, Head of Lab1886 Global. On the basis of automotive fuel cells, in the coming months Rolls-Royce will develop a holistic concept for future sustainable and independent emergency power supply under its MTU product and solutions brand. It is intended primarily for safety-critical areas of application, for example data centres - an area which today is covered by conventional engines. The project is already in the development phase. Construction of plants for the pilot project is planned to begin at the start of next year. “As a provider of integrated solutions, the de-carbonisation of the drive system and energy supply is one of our strategic goals which we

are pursuing in a technology-neutral manner. As part of this, fuel-cell technology is a key technology for us”, says Dr Martin Teigeler, Head of R&D of the Rolls-Royce Power Systems business unit. “The principle of the fuel cell is as ingenious as it is simple, the technology is well-known but nevertheless demanding in terms of its application. Now it is ready for series production and therefore ready for the commercial market”, continues Teigeler. Along with fuel-cell technology, RollsRoyce is involved in the production of hydrogen and other synthetic fuels with energy from renewable sources – also for use in fuel cells. “In this combination, the fuel cell is making an even more important contribution to the energy revolution”, according to Teigeler. “We are delighted that in Lab1886 we

FUEL CELLS AS THE IDEAL CHOICE FOR MICRO-GRIDS IN COMPUTER CENTRES Computer centres are among the largest energy consumers in the new economy, and this consumption is showing considerable growth rates. The increasing energy requirement must be met with a sustainable and environmentally compatible power

supply. Fuel cells are a very promising technology in this sector. No other energy technology offers such high reliability, modular scalability and all the advantages of renewable energy without dependence on the conventional energy market. When constantly supplied with hydrogen, fuel-cell systems continuously generate electrical power. Synergies can also be used in the cooling system: the output temperature of the computer coolant is the same as the input temperature of the fuel-cell coolant. Back at the end of 2017, Lab1886 and Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell extended their

Lubricants make things run smoothly Lubricants are indispensable in industry. Greases and oils perform critical functions, ensuring that engines and machines run perfectly smooth. They extend the service life of machines, protect them from corrosion, cool them by dissipating process heat, act as a seal and prevent the formation of deposits. Depending on the application, lubricants must possess a specific performance profile. For instance, hydraulic oils are subject to different specifications than heat treatment fluids. Lubricant manufacturers use specific additives to obtain these properties in their lubricants. These active ingredients are added to lubricants in order to achieve new, desirable properties and/or to eliminate unwanted ones. Among the focal points of Lanxess’s Additives business unit are lubricant additives and synthetic lubricants for industrial applications such as in metalworking, power generation and aerospace. From synthetic lubricant base fluids to individual additives and additive packages, our high-performance products lubricate engines, machines and transport vehicles of all kinds.
