T

he year 2018 saw launches of several cars and two wheelers in India. But for Mahindra & Mahindra, the year will be ending on a high note with the launch of the Alturas G4 luxury SUV. We drove the vehicle and we must tell you that it’s not like the previous generation Rexton from SsangYong, a south Korean automobile company owned by Mahindras.

SsangYong launched the Rexton G4 or the generation 4 in 2017 and since then the vehicle has

been doing extremely well globally. The Alturas is the Indian name for the vehicle and it’s got an entirely new Mahindra skin. The vehicle will be taking on the big names like Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. We drove it on the roads near Pune and thrashed it around the sandy tracts of Jaipur. All I can say is that it is an extremely capable vehicle.

In this issue we have also driven the new Maruti Suzuki Ertiga which has been launched with a new petrol heart and a lot of new features. Besides these drive reports, we are carrying an exhaustive report on the EICMA 2018, the international two-wheeler show held in Milan, Italy. Enjoy reading this report and the several other interesting ones in this issue of Motown India.

DBX, a prototype of Aston Martin’s first SUV begins testing

A

ston Martin’s first SUV has been named DBX . The first development prototype of the DBX is being put through its paces along a demanding Welsh Rally stage in the hands of the company’s Chief Engineer, Matt Becker. DBX is scheduled to be unveiled in the last quarter of 2019 and will be built at Aston Martin Lagonda’s St. Athan facility; a state-of-theart luxury manufacturing plant that will ultimately become the ‘Home of Electrification’ when the marque’s fully-EV models enter production. This first test for DBX signifies the start of an extensive testing programme. One that has begun in Wales, as a nod to Aston Martins’ new St. Athan production facility in the Vale of Glamorgan. Though simulation

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com

is an essential part of DBX’s early development phase, this first prototype drive in Wales signifies the start of ‘real world’ testing, in which the SUV will be subjected to a punishing regime that will ultimately see development prototypes of the all-new machine tackle some of the world’s harshest environments, from the frozen Arctic and scorching deserts of the Middle East to high Alpine passes and the high-speed demands of the German autobahn and Nürburgring Nordschleife. The unique nature of DBX in the Aston Martin range means it requires a dedicated test programme; one that features new processes, procedures and standards that reflect its allpurpose role. So, while it will perform with the verve and poise of a true Aston Martin, its dynamic envelope has to extend into areas previously offlimits to the marque’s sporting roots. Naturally this includes impressive multi-terrain and towing capabilities as befits a state-of-the-art SUV.

Eight generation Porsche 911 world premiere

E

ntering the eighth generation, the new Porsche 911 celebrated its world premiere on the eve of the 2018 L.A. Auto Show, with the reveal of the 911 Carrera S and 4S CoupĂŠ models. The car comes with a more muscular look and an interior featuring a 10.9-inch touchscreen monitor. The next generation of flat-six turbocharged engines has been further developed and is more powerful than ever before, resulting in a performance of 450hp in the 911 Carrera S and 4S. An improved injection process and a new layout for the turbochargers and charged air cooling system enhance drive efficiency even further. The power is delivered by a newly developed eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (dual-clutch transmission). Additional highlights include new assistance systems, such as the Porsche Wet mode to make driving even safer, Night Vision Assist with thermal imaging camera, as well as comprehensive connectivity now also using swarm intelligence.

Chrono Package reduces the sprint by a further 0.2 seconds. The top speed has been measured at 308kmph for the 911 Carrera S and 306 km/h for the all-wheel-drive version. The exterior design is completely new and emphasises the leap in performance for the 911 internally coded as 992. Significantly wider wheel housings arch over the 20-inch front wheels and 21-inch rear wheels. The rear end is now the same width across all models, highlighting the slimline centre section. At the front, the body is 45 mm wider. Electrical pop-out handles in the doors emphasise the tapered and smooth side contour, while a bonnet with a pronounced recess evokes the design of the first 911 generations. All models feature a rear significantly wider, variable-position rear spoiler and the seamless, elegant light strip. Apart from the front and rear sections, the entire outer shell is now made from aluminium.

Both 911 models beat the four-second mark for acceleration from 0-100kmph: the rear-wheel-drive 911 Carrera S needs 3.7 seconds and the 911 Carrera 4S, with all-wheel drive, just 3.6 seconds. This makes both cars 0.4 seconds faster than their predecessors. The optional Sport

CAR NEWS

Volvo Car India to roll out XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid by end 2019 Volvo Cars announced that it will be the first car company to assemble plug-in hybrid cars locally in India. Following a topdown approach, Volvo XC90 is going to be the first model from Volvo’s portfolio whose plug-in hybrid variant will be assembled locally at the Bengaluru plant by end of 2019. Apart from the XC90, a range of plug-in hybrids are slated for launch in the next 3 years. This announcement places electrification at the core of Volvo’s future business. It also paves way for the complete phase-out of combustionengine-only models. As part of the #BreatheFree initiative, Volvo cars rolled out environment activities to generate awareness of increasing PM2.5 levels in the atmosphere. In association with ASSOCHAM, the outreach activities involved

schools in NCR and dealerships across the nation to make a DIY Clean Air filter kit which was distributed on children’s day in areas where people cannot afford air purifiers. Charles Frump - Managing Director, Volvo Car India said, “The localisation of plug-in hybrids marks the future of electrification for us. Our

customers are increasingly becoming aware about the rise in pollution levels and degrading environment. As a responsible luxury car company, we believe electrification is the future. However, till the time we

have a supporting infrastructure, plug-in hybrids offer the intermediate solution.”

S

ometimes I wonder why it took so much time for Mahindra & Mahindra to get serious about their Ssangyong models, especially the Rexton which they launched several years ago. Nobody in India really knew from where this car had landed and many had no inclination that it was from the overall Mahindra Group stable. Well, all that is history now and we have the new Alturas G4, basically a fourth generation Rexton which had its world premiere in 2017 at the Seoul Motor Show and subsequently shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The luxury SUV has sold more than 40,000 units worldwide and its sports variant has sold another 40,000 units worldwide and they are doing extremely well in the global markets. Finally, it is in India with a reassuring Mahindra skin.

of 4850mm, width of 1960mm and a height of 1845mm with a wheel base of 2865mm. The Alturas G4 looks imposing like many of its competitors and stylish too. The front end is very masculine with a smart vertical grille with chrome slats and the Mahindra logo at the centre. The side profile too is smart with decent looking wheel arches and chrome window surrounds. The roof rails add to the good looks of the vehicle. The windshield has a de-icer function. The SUV has a sunroof and thankfully this comes with an anti-pinch feature which in essence means that if you stick your neck out you will not be guillotined if someone accidentally closes the roof!

With the Mahindra Alturas G4, the company will be setting a new benchmark in its offering. It would be the most elite of the vehicles that would be sold with the Mahindra badging. The Alturas G4 will be exclusively available through a separate high-end showroom with a lot of candies for the customers. This elegant looking vehicle is expected to take on the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, the Ford Endeavour and a whole host of 4 wheel drive SUVs out there in the top notch category. The vehicle sits on 255/60 R18 tyres shrouded around smart diamond cut alloy wheels.

The rear too is smart with an integrated spoiler and a high stop light and a chrome styling towards the bottom of the tailgate. The words ALTURAS G4 carved on the tailgate brings out the character of the vehicle. There is also a Mahindra logo just below S P EC IFIC ATIO N S the rear windshield. The muffler too is hidden at the back. Here the mirror tilts when one reverses the vehicle. The story of the Alturas G4 exterior is not complete if I do not tell you about the tailgate automatic opening. Unlike vehicles where you need to kick sideways or kick in and out, here you need to just stand with your key in the pocket and bingo the door opens. This function can, of course, be deactivated or activated from inside by pressing

certain buttons mounted on the steering wheel!

INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The interiors of the Mahindra Alturas G4 are really plush. You get dual tone quilted Nappa leather interiors in this vehicle and the front seats are ventilated which can be cooled with the help of blowers, the buttons for which are there on the centre console. The centre console is premium and you also get leather finish door trims. The dashboard and door pads are all made of premium material which is soft to touch.

As for the other premium features, there are illuminated front door scuff plate, lamps for the inside door handles and the centre of the dashboard, LED room lamps for all three rows, foot well lighting, illuminated glove box, 8 way adjustable powered driver seat, dual zone fully automatic temperature control, 3rd row AC vents with blower controls, tyre pressure monitoring system, 4D around view camera and front and rear assist parking. The Alturas G4 has a dual smart key system with start/ stop button, front rain sensor

wiper, electronic parking brake with auto hold function, a steering wheel that can be adjusted for tilt and reach and power windows with anti-pinch function. The second row seats are 60:40 split and can be folded and tumbled at the tug of a lever and a flap. The seats tumble gently with the help of pneumatic arms. In fact, with the second row and third row seats down, one can have a spacious space for lots of luggage or one can use the space to sleep by putting in a mattress. For the convenience of the passengers, the second row comes with USB slots

while the third row gets a 12V socket. Entry and exit for the front row is very easy while the second row gets large grab handles for help. Room for the second row passengers is immense, while the third row can be a bit stuffy for adults. The second row gets an armrest with retractable cup holders. Now to get your entertainment going, this vehicle comes with an 8 inches touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The 7 inches digital

SAFETY AND PERFORMANCE The Alturas G4 is built on ultrarigid quad frame and its overall structure is such that it minimises deformation in a collision, thereby increasing protection of all vehicular occupants. The vehicle comes with nine airbags including dual full length curtain, rear 1st seat, and knee protection. Features like Electronic Stability Programme, ABS with EBD, Active Rollover Protection (ARP), Hill Descent Control (HDC), Brake Assist Ssystem (BAS), and Emergency Stop Signal (ESS)- comes into play when there is hard braking. The 2.2 litre diesel engine in the Alturas G4 is mated to a MercedesBenz sourced 7 speed automatic transmission and has a shift on fly 4 wheel drive. The brief distance I drove the vehicle on smooth tarmac brought out the finesses of the engine. It was quick on its feet and the acceleration was amazingly satisfying. Power delivery was very linear and cabin comfort and ride quality were top notch. I could feel the suspension was providing the right comfort within the cabin. The

24 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2018

SUV has a W and S button which when engaged puts the vehicle in snow mode in W. Since S stands for summer, it disengages the W mode. But when we took the huge SUV on to some sandy terrains of Jaipur, the vehicle showed its true blue blooded off-road character. I engaged the 4L mode and drove carefully on the vast terrain that lay before me. There were a whole lot of narrow and twisted paths. Surprisingly, the vehicle performed brilliantly on these tracks. With hill descent control and traction control activated, I had a whale of a time going down some very steep tracks. I was thoroughly impressed by its character both on and off the roads.

VERDICT The Mahindra Alturas G4 is by far the best offering by Mahindra and Mahindra in the passenger vehicle segment. The company has always been known for making some of the sturdiest SUVs, but now they add yet another feather on their cap for their sophisticated skills in making a luxury SUV!

T

he multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) segment in India seems to be experiencing quite a bit of activity lately. The Mahindra Marazzo came into existence and Datsun also refreshed the Go+. Now we have the Next-Gen Ertiga from the beloved automaker of the country, Maruti Suzuki. The original model was received warmly due to the great price and features it had. So how does this new Ertiga fare?

EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The designers at Maruti Suzuki have really stepped their game up by a notch with the new Ertiga. I was quite impressed by the indentation of sharp character lines all across the body. The front especially has been treated to a lot of beautification and now has a sharper look. The MPV has shed its round and cute look for a smart looking one and I am hugely impressed. The front gets a heavily chrome studded grille along with bold looking headlamp

clusters that house projector lamps. The only thing I wish that was added on were LED DRLs. The side has two prominent lines running across, one of which merges with the tail-lamp. The entire B-pillar has been blacked out and provides a nice contrast with the rest of the vehicle. The 15-inch alloys look decent, if a little less impressive than the rest of the design elements. At the back, one can see an all-new tail-lamp design that will give you flashbacks of a certain Swedish manufacturer. Regardless, the LED lamps look great and flow well with the modish look of the car. There is a chrome bar on the boot lid along with a few smart carvings on the rear giving it a more lively appeal.

INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The interiors of the Ertiga have been treated to an overhaul. You get an eye catching wood finish across the dash, extending to the doors. While there is no doubt that it looks great, one must be weary that it is not real wood. Just above the wood finish on the dash is a strip of black which houses the AC vents. While this

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com

aircraft-like design is a bit of an odd choice, it fits decently. The rest of the cabin has been finished in a shade of beige that some might like, but I personally do not enjoy. While most of the things about the cabin look and feel premium, there are some things that miss the mark. One of them is the dated looking AC control unit. It is functional but looks very dated as you lower your gaze from the high-tech touchscreen infotainment system. The infotainment system has been seen in a couple of Maruti Suzuki vehicle now and works pretty great and supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link. The flat bottom steering wheel might be a bit odd to have, since this is not a sporty vehicle. But it does look good and gets a hint of wood finish at the bottom in the top trim. It is only adjustable for height and not reach. Behind the steering wheel you will find the uber cool instrument cluster. There are two analogue dials that show you your speed and rpm and a display in the middle

DECEMBER 2018 | MOTOWN INDIA | 27

that shows you extra information. The display differs depending on whether you have the petrol or diesel model. The petrol models get a fullcolour TFT display that graphically represent a lot of helpful information including the battery charge level, when the torque assist function is being used or when the battery is being charged due to braking. The diesel gets a much simpler display that is limited to displaying figures like trip meters, gear position, range, fuel efficiency etc. It is a shame that you get no colour display in diesel even if you buy the top end. The seat cushion is commendable for all three rows and can keep you comfortable on the longest of journeys. The new Ertiga is a bit bigger in all aspects than the previous model, so there is slightly more space on the inside too. As a person who is 6-feet tall, I had no issues with space in the first two rows. It was only the third row that was cramped for space but that can be understood as that is a place only for kids. Maruti Suzuki has added one touch tumble functions to both the 2nd and 3rd row seats which makes folding and moving them easier. The third row has a recline function that makes the sitting position a bit more comfortable. There are loads of storage spaces throughout the car but the most innovative are the cup-holders in the first

28 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2018

row that are air-cooled and you can control the airflow using a dial. All four doors can easily house 1 litre bottles and then a few papers too. Even the third row occupants get a cup-holder on either side along with a single 12V charging point. I would have been happier if the second row got a USB slot instead of a 12V socket. There are four blowers housed in the cooling unit on the roof that supply cool air to the 2nd and 3rd row occupants. While they certainly do the job for 2nd row passengers, we will have to test the vehicle over a longer period to decide if they are effective for the last row as well.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Maruti is offering the Ertiga with both diesel and petrol smart hybrid engines. The diesel engine is the 1.3L DDiS 200 engine previously seen on vehicles like the S-Cross and Brezza. It comes

mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and performs as one would expect. The motor is quite refined and easy to work with although it lacks life below 2400rpm. The 1.5L K15 petrol engine has been newly developed and is being offered with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. The petrol motor is lively compared to the diesel and you notice that especially when taking off. Since you do not have to wait for the turbo to kick-in, the drive is a lot more fun than the diesel. While driving the manual petrol and diesel cars I also found that the petrol accelerated more quickly in the 5th gear than the diesel, which just seemed to take its own sweet time to catch up. While the 5-speed manual was flawless, the 4-speed automatic also impressed. The gear shifts were not noticeable in normal driving and even when I did floor the accelerator, it shifted rather commendably. However, the new Ertiga is still not a performance vehicle when compared to

others in the market. I found the steering to be weighted quite well and the car was quite maneuverable. It was stable through curves and at high speeds. The NVH levels were decent but could definitely be improved upon as there is noticeable road noise at higher speeds. The 185/65 tyres do a good job of keeping the car on track. With disc brakes at the front and drum in the rear, there is ample stopping power and the brakes have a nice progression. ABS and EBD make things easier. The suspension is something that would be appreciated by all the occupants of the Ertiga as it does a great job soaking in the bumps and undulations. The new Ertiga is built on the Heartect platform, promising a more rigid frame and the car gets dual airbags as standard along with ISOFIX anchorages for child seats. Still,

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com

two airbags is all you get even in the top end model.

VERDICT The new and improved Ertiga is definitely an eye candy, inside-out. The new petrol engine is also a welcome upgrade. The new petrol manual variant of the Ertiga starts at Rs 7.44 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and still remains a budget option for MPV lovers. It now brings along a host of goodies including an automatic transmission. The only problem is that as of now the automatic is not available in the top end variant so you miss out on things like the intuitive touchscreen infotainment system, wood finish and more. The presence of Marazzo in close proximity of the Ertiga does heat things up a bit but I still think that the Ertiga will be able to hold its own.

EICMA 2018 KTM KTM unveiled its most comprehensive, innovative and extreme range ever when it presented five new motorcycles. Leading its 2019 line-up is the eagerly anticipated KTM 790 Adventure and KTM 790 Adventure R. The KTM 790 Adventure is for travel enduro fans of every ambition and ability, ready to discover new roads whichever way it’s pointed at – no matter what the surface is. The KTM 790 Adventure R is a lightweight, agile and technically advanced machine for adventurers that endeavor to challenge themselves while challenging tricky terrain. Both powered by the 799cc LC8c parallel twin – first seen in the KTM 790 Duke – the engine has been tuned to deliver its torque lower down the rev range to fit the specific requirements of adventure riding. The result is

smooth acceleration, plentiful performance and a 450 km range from a 20-litre tank. Powering the KTM 690 SMC R is the latest generation LC4 engine; the world’s most powerful production singlecylinder engine dishes up 74hp and 73.5Nm of torque. Getting the most from this performance in all situations is a suite of rider assistance systems. Two ride modes – Street and Sport – cornering ABS, lean angle-sensitive motorcycle traction control (MTC), motor slip regulation (MSR) and Quickshifter+ are new to the game, with the familiar Supermoto ABS mode aiding rear slides with front-end confidence. All this is packaged in an updated chassis and new subframe, supported by the latest generation fullyadjustable WP APEX suspension

and wrapped up in slimmer, sharper bodywork. The bike now comes with a 1.5-litre larger fuel tank. The new KTM 690 Enduro R is even more perfectly positioned to connect the tarmac and trails, also benefitting from the same engine, electronics and chassis improvements made to its sliding Supermoto sibling, but in a platform completely focused on offroad. The newly developed KTM SX-E 5 is the next step in KTM’s innovative line-up. Combining class-leading knowledge in youth motorcycling with years of development work in the e-sector, the KTM SX-E 5 is based on the incredibly popular 2-stroke KTM 50 SX with a high-end chassis powered by an electric motor. The mission was clear: to create

an ultra-competitive machine that is also easy to ride, even for pure beginners. The KTM SX-E 5 enjoys the advantage of zero emissions, low noise and minimal maintenance, which makes it ideal for youngsters looking to make the first step into the world of motorcycling and thanks to its dynamic design, it is ideal for the growing rider with its adjustable seat height. As unveiled last month in Cologne, also joining the 2019 range is a sharper, stronger and more refined version of the KTM 1290 Super Duke GT. Major updates to this premium machine can be found in the engine, suspension, electronics and bodywork with a focus on improving comfort and performance – be it while twoup touring, continent cruising or track attacking.

be produced in only 300 samples. The history and unique style of this oneof-a-kind bike returns more attractive and modern than ever. The reworked engine is part of the revolution scheme with central distribution chain and radial valves, all has been redesigned, starting from the combustion chamber to the lubrication. The aim? Concentrated performance, smooth running and absolute reliability. A detail that says a lot about the efficiency of this bike is embodied by the winglets on the sides of the radiator; they have the purpose to improve stability when exceeding 250kmph.

MV Agusta showcased the new F4 Claudio, the dream of Claudio Castiglioni that became reality, a model heir to the historical MV Agusta F4 born in 1997, designed by Massimo Tamburini. The all-new Brutale 1000 Series Oro, the most powerful and fastest hypernaked ever, moved by the powerful 4-cylinder engine designed by MV Agusta was also there for the visitors. All the experience that has been accumulated on the racetrack has been poured into the engine of the Brutale 1000 Serie Oro, which sets new records for absolute power while still complying with pollution and noise regulations, making it more advanced in certain aspects than the competition powerplant. Also on display was the brand new MV Agusta Superveloce. The MV Agusta Superveloce 800 made its debut, in concept form, at the EICMA, a precursor to the model that will be produced in the second half of 2019. The carbon fibre fairing envelopes the sleek and functional forms of the engine and frame like a second skin. The upper fairing, with its classic cut lines, makes tribute to design ethos of the nineteenseventies, highlighted by the yellow colour of the plexiglass windscreen and the headlight unit. The latter is a technologically advanced twinfunction full LED poly- ellipsoidal. The daylight running light, also LED, is built into the cover of the new instrument cluster. The elusive, lightweight and minimalistic tail fairing rests on a new sub-frame allowing the user to transform the bike from a single seat to a dual seat version. One of the defining details is the new circular LED tail light unit, elegant, and distinctive.

The name “America” holds a prominent place in the MV Agusta heritage. The primary reference is to the “S America 750”, a model that dates back to 1975 and which boasted an in-line four-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshaft, 75 horsepower and air cooling. The MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR America will be made in a limited edition of just 200 units, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. The saddle boasts stitching with gold highlights and unique materials for the areas dedicated to the rider and the passenger. The beautiful spoke wheels pay homage to the colours of the American flag: blue hub, red spokes and white rim. The glossy black finish of some components stands out, such as the front mudguard with the MV Agusta logo and the side of the radiator with the “America Special Edition” decal which also graces the instrument cluster cover along with the progressive production number.

ABOVE: MV Agusta Brutale BELOW: MV Agusta Superveloce

The collaboration between Pirelli and MV Agusta continues. The result of this partnership is the latest limited edition gem Dragster 800 RR Pirelli, outstanding for its streetfighter design and powerful three-cylinder heart. Pirelli experts not only personalised the look of the bike offering two different colour combinations - black/yellow and white/blue - but also enhanced some other elements, like the fairing and the tank slide, created with a special rubber. Both components are recognisable thanks to the “flash”, symbol that distinguishes the tyres of the Diablo range, including the Diablo Supercorsa SP that equip this exclusive model (120/70 ZR17 front and 200/55 ZR17 rear).

The evolution of the Brutale project finds a synthesis in the 1000 Gold Series, which will

CARLOS GHOSN IMPRISONED FOR “FINANCIAL MISCONDUCT” Ousted from top post in Nissan and Mitsubishi

F

ollowing allegations for financial misconduct against Renault-NissanMitsubishi Alliance chairman Carlos Ghosn and his subsequent arrest and imprisonment in Japan, the legendary corporate leader of the automobile world was shown the door by the managements of both Nissan and Mitsubishi. The decision to discharge Ghosn of his post as Chairman of Nissan was taken by the board of directors of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. which met on November 22, 2018 at the company’s global headquarters in Yokohama. At the beginning of the session, the board acknowledged the significance of the matter and confirmed that the long-standing

Alliance partnership with Renault remains unchanged and that the mission is to minimise the potential impact and confusion on the day-to-day cooperation among the Alliance partners. The Alliance consists of Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi. All three companies have crossholdings in each other. According to a press release, after reviewing a detailed report of the internal investigation, the board voted unanimously: 1. To discharge Carlos Ghosn as Chairman of the Board 2. To discharge Carlos Ghosn as Representative Director 3. To discharge Greg Kelly as Representative Director 4. To study the creation

of a special committee to appropriately take advice from an independent third party regarding the governance management system and better governance of director compensation. Further to the mandate, the three independent directors – Masakazu Toyoda, Keiko Ihara and Jean-Baptiste Duzan – will lead this matter. 5. To approve establishment of an advisory committee chaired by Masakazu Toyoda and including Keiko Ihara and Jean-Baptiste Duzan. The committee will propose nominations from the board of directors for the position of Chairman of the Board. Taking a similar action a few days later on November 26, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) announced that its Board of Directors had resolved to discharge Carlos Ghosn as Representative Director and Chairman of the Board at MMC for the reasons that, “while Mr. Ghosn took the position as Representative Director and Chairman of the Board based on the Strategic Alliance Agreement between MMC and Nissan, he has lost the confidence of Nissan; and that it is considered difficult for Mr. Ghosn to continue conducting his activities as the Representative Director and Chairman of the Board. In the resulting absence of the Chairman of the Board, the Board of

Directors also resolved to appoint Osamu Masuko, Representative Director and CEO, as Chairman of the Board temporarily until next General Shareholders Meetings.” In a joint message issued to the media on November 29, 2018, the three companies said that “Over the past few days, the Board of Directors of Groupe Renault, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation have all – individually and collectively - emphatically reiterated their strong commitment to the Alliance. The Alliance has achieved unparalleled success in the past two decades. We remain fully committed to the Alliance.” Earlier, while removing Ghosn from the Chairman post at MMC, the company had stated that “media outlets reported that MMC’s Chairman of the Board and Representative Director, Carlos Ghosn, had been arrested by Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office on the charge of filing annual securities reports containing fake statement, in breach of the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. In response to the arrest of Ghosn, and since the alleged misconduct is related to a corporate governance and compliance issue, it is to be proposed to the Board of Directors to promptly remove Ghosn from his position as MMC’s Chairman of the Board and Representative Director. We will readily conduct an internal investigation on whether Ghosn has been engaged in the misconduct like the above within MMC. MMC deeply apologizes for any concern caused by the recent event.”

CNG infrastructure development will lead to massive cut in oil bills

A CNG pump in New Delhi. Picture for representation purpose only.

Developing India’s CNG infrastructure could help achieve 50pc natural gas vehicles penetration by 2030 leading to crude oil import savings of Rs 11 lakh crore. In a research report published by Nomura Research Institute (NRI), a leading global management consulting enterprise entitled “CNG Infrastructure Development: A boon for Indian Economy”, it has been noted that as the fastest growing economy in the world, India has an ever increasing demand for energy which has a 35% share of crude oil. The high oil imports [USD 88 Billion in FY18] are fuelling high foreign exchange needs and have an adverse effect on the country’s current account deficit and currency exchange rate. The situation is further worsened by

56 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2018

the negative trickle down effects on the overall economy in the form of subdued GDP growth rate wholesale and consumer inflation. The Economic Survey of 2018 also noted the negative effect of high oil prices through the following: “It is estimated that a $10 per barrel increase in the price of oil reduces growth by 0.2-0.3 percentage points, increases WPI inflation by about 1.7 percentage points and worsens the CAD by about $9-10 billion dollars” [Economic Survey 2018] Transport sector, is amongst the largest consumers of imported oil [70% of diesel and almost all of petrol is consumed by the Transport sector] as the Automotive Sector is expected

to witness an average growth rate of 8% till 2030, the current situation of energy security would further worsen if our energy mix in transportation is not diversified. Natural Gas vehicles are the fastest way to reduce oil imports in the transportation sector. High customer acceptance, availability of CNG vehicles and presence of local component manufacturing could facilitate quick substitute to oil imports and hence an early realisation of the benefits. However, the only major constraint to the adoption of Natural Gas vehicles (NGV) is the NGV infrastructure; dispensing stations. The current plan for Natural Gas infrastructure development unveiled by

B2B NEWS

the Government of India is a step in the right direction. It entails establishing 10,000 CNG stations in the next 10 years. Also the recently announced 10th round of CGD bidding by PNGRB will further catalyse the momentum by establishing more CNG infrastructure to additional 124 additional districts, taking total coverage to 52% of India’s area and 70% of population. These steps could also help achieve 50% sales penetration of natural gas vehicles by 2030 which in turn has the potential to achieve crude oil import savings of Rs 11 lakh crore (USD 153 Billion at current exchange rate) by 2030, the research report said. In addition to the lowering oil imports, CNG infrastructure development will yield additional benefits to the Environment, the end-user and the economy.

Owing to the current plan on CNG infrastructure development plan it is estimated that * By 2030, more than 4 Lakh new jobs would be created * 3W & LCV drivers switching to CNG would see a monthly increase in income by Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 CNG being 20-25% less CO2 emitting than conventional liquid fuels would assist India in achieving the COP22 commitment of carbon footprint reduction. It is worth noting that major problem of pollution in our cities is due to PM emissions (PM 2.5 and PM 10) and in CNG the PM emissions are “almost ZERO” While CNG is a proven and economically viable alternative fuel for ICE cars, 3Ws, LCVs and buses, LNG makes better commercial sense for longhaulage trucks. LNG trucks

enable storage of higher quantity of fuel in less space, leading to lower payload penalty and longer range compared to CNG. LNG is the only validated viable alternative to diesel in heavy commercial vehicles. This is also the reason why many countries globally are embracing LNG trucks. Use of LNG for intercity truck movement should be given priority and Commercial vehicle OEMs should be encouraged to change to LNG use in a definite period of time. While the first step in this direction was making the announcement and developing a policy, it must be followed-up with action on the ground. It is worth noting that while making policies around alternatives fuels and approving more areas for setting up CNG stations needs the Central Government’s

intervention, faster development of CNG infrastructure can only happen with active support of State Governments. Setting up CNG stations requires multiple statutory permissions from state Governments. While permit requirements differ state to state, permissions are required from several different agencies e.g. approvals from District Magistrate, Departments of Forest, Town Planning, Electricity, Fire, Police, Food Supply, Pollution Board, Chief Medical Officer, Traffic, PESO etc. These sometimes add to delays and unnecessary costs. More number of CNG stations and hence associated benefits of CNG can only be realized if CNG infrastructure development projects are accorded great importance by the state Governments.

Log 9 Materials working on metal-air battery to run EVs Log 9 Materials, an IIT Roorkee spin-off working in nanotechnology domain is working on a metal-air battery concept to revolutionise the energy sector. The company is making a commercially viable product on this underlying technology for electric vehicles and stationary applications. It is like literally running your car on water! A metal-air battery works on water and metal. The battery is a primary energy generation technology similar to a fuel cell. The company is using graphene to make the batteries commercially viable and economical. Conventional lithium ion batteries store energy rather than generating the same. Thus an electric vehicle with li-ion batteries could have a range of 100-150 kms post which it has to be charged which in itself takes around 2-3 hours. What Log 9 Materials is doing is that it is developing a solution which charges a silo battery while it is being drained in parallel, thus making the range extend to about 1000 kms. The energy generated is clean as it does not generate harmful toxins in the process of generation of electricity, the company said in a press statement. Log 9 Materials was founded in 2015 by Akshay Singhal and co-founded by Kartik Hajela. Log 9 Materials focuses on graphene nanotechnology, with an aim to innovate and develop end user commercial applications of the wonder material ‘Graphene’. The company recently secured a pre series-A funding of around Rs 3 crore from Metaform Ventures, Hemant Luthra, Chairman, Mahindra CIE, GEMS and other angel investors. This is a continuation of Log 9’s Pre Series-A funding received from GEMS Advisory earlier in 2017 Log 9 functions as a bridge between the market and the research

community providing mankind the access to life changing and ecofriendly products. Log 9 Materials also manufactures high quality nanomaterials in bulk for industrial production of these products. The company claims that its recent research shows extra-ordinary potential for the launch of various life changing graphene based products like non-electric water purification systems, Industrial effluent treatment. Log 9 currently holds 3 patents in graphene synthesis and graphene products. Currently, it is focussing on 6 new technology developments.

SECTORS IN WHICH LOG 9 MATERIALS IS WORKING: ENERGY Better modes of energy generation and storage are vital for a sustainable future. Development of new age forms of energy production and management are not only important from an environmental perspective but also for better lifestyle and human growth. Two-dimensional layered structure of graphene with its extra-ordinary and customisable

electronic properties makes it ideal for improving existing energy platforms. While at the same time, with advancements in graphene it has become possible in realising technologies in the energy sector which were not viable earlier. Log 9 is developing new age energy solutions for electric mobility and remote applications using graphene. FILTRATION Rampant ecological imbalance caused due to multi-faceted pollution has led to a dire need for new and improved filtration technologies for purification of air and water. Also, with diminishing fossil fuel reserves challenges of oil purification are more intense then ever before. Graphene due to its high surface area and unique electronic properties is the best solution to the filtration needs of the 21st century. Log 9 is developing the catalysis, absorption and microchanneling properties of graphene based materials for new age filtration and purification technologies. We are adopting a diversified approach by developing particulate, foam as well as membrane based graphene technologies.

New Magneti Marelli Electronic Control System for the Moto2 The new Electronic Control System developed by Magneti Marelli for the upcoming season of Moto2 was presented during the Technical Press Conference organised by Dorna at Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia to present the 2019 Moto2 Project Development. From next year on, in fact, the Moto2 class will witness a technical step forward with the adoption of a new engine, developed by Triumph, and the new electronic control system, which will be provided to all the teams competing in this class by Magneti Marelli. According to Dorna’s requests, the new system has been designed to fill, with a sensible approach, the technical gap between Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP, adding technical content to Moto2, also with the consequence of improving the handling and the rider safety, and bringing them closer to the standards of MotoGP. The main challenge in achieving these objectives arises from the need to develop a system which is capable of providing complex

technological content, close to that already provided by Magneti Marelli for the premier-class, adapting it to Moto2 vehicles in terms of compact size and affordable costs. With this agreement, all the teams will have access to a complete kit including Engine Control Unit, Inertial Platform, Dashboard, Switch Panel and relative Software. In fact, Magneti Marelli will provide an integrated system, comprised of various components which individually perform a specific function, coordinated by the ECU, and which work together to ensure an harmonised and efficient management of the vehicle. This systemic approach of several components integrated allows, at the same time, for costs to be optimized. Training and continuous track assistance will be guaranteed by Magneti Marelli, in order to help the teams approach the new system. The Moto2 electronic control system project involved 12 Magneti Marelli engineers, who worked for over one year in order to develop the hardware,

basic software and application software, as well as to fine tune and calibrate the system. This also marks a new important step for Magneti Marelli in the collaboration with Dorna, together with the experience in MotoGP, where the company is already supplying the unified Engine Control Unit to all the teams. The electronic control system The Engine Control Unit is a compact and powerful ‘allin-one’ system, specifically designed to control motorbike engines, driving actuators, acquiring data through a data logger from the bike’s strategic sensors and process them through the dedicated software. It is designed to reduce complexity and weight, while providing technical added value. The main challenge consisted in integrating and adapting the highend and complex technology developed for MotoGP to the different requirements of Moto2, also focusing

on size reduction and costoptimization. The Inertial Platform System supplies to the Engine Control Unit all the relevant information about the bike’s behavior in space, like acceleration, rotation speed, lean angle, in order to manage its balance and grip in the best possible way. It hosts sensors (accelerometers and gyroscopes) that allow to reconstruct the bike’s status, maximizing, through the control of some actions, tyres behavior and performance. The system ensures reliability through a redundant architecture. The inertial platform introduced in Moto2 will be the same as the one in MotoGP.
