Scorpion All Terrain Vehicles to make India debut soon Report: P. Tharyan
W
ith several automotive companies in India promoting motorsport activities in the country, including off-road events, a pure thoroughbred off road vehicle is the need of the hour. The Rain Forest Challenge to be held in Goa in July 2017 will see one such vehicle that goes by the name of Scorpion. Subsequently, the Scorpion will be made in India by IronScorpion HMV, a company that was formed in January 2017 after several years of efforts between Jaskirat Singh Nagra and William Dwaine Jungen. In a communication to Motown India from the US, Dwaine said that
“IronScorpion HMV will offer an Indian constructed Scorpion All Terrain Vehicle, and will become India’s provider of quality extreme use off-road vehicle components and modification services.” IronScorpion HMV is a partnership between Preferred Chassis Fabrication Inc, a US based company that is the manufacturer of the Scorpion All-Terrain Vehicle, and Sarbloh Motors, an Indian company based out of Chandigarh, which specialises in off-road and expedition vehicles. The Scorpion to be made in India will initially have a power plant from US — a gasoline powered 5.7L General Motors
OHV V/8 engine with a General Motors Turbo Hydramatic automatic transmission. The engine delivers 290 hp @ 5100 rpm and a peak torque of 442 Nm @ 3750 rpm. These engines are equipped with electronic throttle body fuel injection. “We are also talking with Cummins India on the 4BT and ISF four cylinder diesel engines. These Cummins diesel power plants should be available in the later production units,” said Dwaine Jungen while giving details of this new off road vehicle to be made in India. Jaskirat Singh Nagra told Motown India that the “patented suspension design of the
Scorpion while making it an extremely capable off-road vehicle, allows the vehicle to be extremely nimble, agile and comfortable on-road as well. Scorpion would be India’s first true All-Terrain vehicle”. Dwaine noted that the “Scorpion that is to be constructed in India will be a true All Terrain Vehicle with the goal of acquiring road use certification. This version of the Scorpion will be fabricated with Indian talent and use locally sourced raw materials. The major chassis drive-train components will be provided from the US in component part “kits” for Indian final assembly and installation in

CAR NEWS the locally fabricated chassis”. “The Indian off-road market is showing the need for new vehicle technologies and capabilities. As shown by events such as the Rain Forest Challenge - that has its fourth annual event this year. Vehicle technology is ever evolving, and pushing the limits of vehicle capabilities creates opportunities. These upgraded vehicle technologies will fill a gap in the Indian off-road market,” he added. According to Dwaine, IronScorpion HMV is actively working on cost analysis of Scorpion Vehicle construction in the Indian market. By the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2017, the company will be announcing the price of the vehicle. “The India Scorpion prototypes should start construction within the next two months. The initial low rate manufacturing is targeted for two units per month once the manufacturing process, facility and supply chain is in place,” he informed. Currently the company is actively working towards putting the supply chain in place and to finalise the logistic channels. The company will also be applying for the Type Approval from ARAI for the Scorpion so that it could be road legal too. “The Scorpion, being a true All Terrain Vehicle, is very road friendly as well as extremely capable on special tracks and extreme offroad terrains,” said Dwaine. Meanwhile, Jaskirat Singh Nagra stated that the all-terrain competence of the Scorpion makes it very suitable for varied applications such as Military Operations, Search and Rescue, Law Enforcement, Recreational and daily use. “Besides bringing the unique Scorpion All-terrain Vehicle to India, IronScorpion HMV will also be bringing in specialised off-road equipment e.g., winches, axles, lockers, transmissions to name a few,” he added.

CAR NEWS STOP PRESS TATA TIGOR LAUNCHED AT STARTING PRICE OF 4.70 LAKH Tata Motors launched its stylish Tigor notchback car in four variants each in petrol and diesel. The new Tata Tigor is basically the sedan version of the popular Tiago from the Tata Motors stable. In fact, it comes with the same engine options as the Tiago i.e. a Revotron 1199cc three cylinder petrol engine which produces 84hp @6000rpm and a peak torque of 114 Nm @ 3500 rpm and a 3 cylinder Revotorq 1047cc, 3 cylinder, diesel mill which produces 69bhp@4000rpm and a peak torque of 140Nm @1800-3000rpm. LEXUS DEBUTS IN INDIA WITH THE RX 450H, ES 300H & LX 450D Lexus made its debut in India with their unveiling of three models, the RX 450 SUV, ES 300h Saloon and their range topping LX 450d. The new Lexus LS which was debuted at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show also made a guest appearance at the exclusive media event in New Delhi and will be made available in the Indian market early 2018. The company has made its debut in India with a hybrid focus line up. The Lexus ES 300h gets a 2.5 litre, 4 cylinder, petrol power plant which puts out 158.24bhp at 5700rpm and 213Nm of torque at 4500rpm. Their flagship SUV the LX 450d is powered by a 4.5 litre, 8 cylinder, V-type diesel engine whish belts out 261.5bhp at 3400rpm and turns 650Nm of torque from 1600 to 2600rpm. The engine has been mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with an AI (Artificial Intelligence) shift system. The Lexus RX 450h has been launched in two variants, the first is the RX Luxury while the second is the RX F Sport. The RX SUVs are powered by a 3,456cc, V6 petrol engine which produces 308bhp at 6000rpm and churns out a max torque of 335Nm at 4600rpm. UPCOMING MARUTI SUZUKI SWIFT Suzuki recently previewed the upcoming Swift hatchback at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The hatch will go on sale in UK in June 2017 and is expected to be launched in the Indian market late in 2017 or early 2018. Maruti will launch the 2017 Swift Dzire compact sedan before the hatch back in mid 2017. The new Swift is said to 10pc lighter and 8pc more fuel efficient than the outgoing model. It will carry forward the same 1.2L petrol and 1.3L diesel mill options. At present it is too early to tell if Maruti will launch an RS version of the Swift which will be powered by the same 1.0L, 3 cylinder, petrol Boosterjet engine which recently made its debut in India on the Baleno RS. However this engine option will be available in the UK and returns almost 26.1kmpl with a power output of 109.4bhp. The Boosterjet engine will also be available with Maruti’s mild hybrid SHVS setup. Suzuki is also offering a higher variant of the new Swift on their ‘HEARTECT’ lightweight platform, giving the hatch a kerb weight of just 890kgs, an overhaul of the underbody’s structure and component layout has helped in adopting a highly rigid frame which also enhances the vehicles collision safety. The new platform has resulted in a reduction of 30kgs from the underbody and an overall weight reduction of 120kgs.

CAR NEWS MARUTI SUZUKI BALENO RS Leading car maker Maruti Suzuki India Limited marked its entry into a highperformance segment with the Baleno Road Sport (RS) which comes with a new 1.0 litre Boosterjet Direct Injection Turbo Charged engine - which delivers 20% more power and 30% more torque than a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. It is an all-aluminium, three-cylinder engine. Baleno RS offers a smooth and peppy ride across all driving conditions, thanks to peak torque available for a wide range of RPM (150 Nm @1700-4500 RPM). NEW PORSCHE PANAMERA MODELS LAUNCHED Porsche India has unveiled the all-wheel drive Panamera Turbo. With its powerful petrol engine, the Panamera Turbo’s new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 develops 550 hp at 5,750 rpm, with a maximum torque of 770 Nm between 1,960 and 4,500 rpm. It has 30 hp more than its predecessor as well as a torque increase of 70 Nm. The Panamera Turbo Executive is equipped with various standard features, including a large panoramic roof, comfort seats with multi-way electrical adjustment in the front and rear, and roll-up sun blinds behind the headrests in the rear. The model also offers four-zone climate control and ambient lighting as standard.
MERCEDES-BENZ LONG WHEEL BASE NEW E-CLASS Luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has launched the first ever right hand drive (RHD) long wheelbase (LWB) version of the new E-Class luxury business sedan. From its launch, this sedan will be ‘Made in India, for India’. With over 13 million units sold globally, the E-Class sedan and Estate are the best-selling vehicles for Mercedes-Benz. The new E-Class sedan in its 10th generation boasts of the most spacious rear cabin in the segment. The long-wheelbase version of the new E-Class sedan built in India, for India, introduces numerous technical innovations of the most intelligent luxury executive sedan, and also offers an even more spacious rear compartment with a first-class character. It exceeds the E-Class sedan sold in the world where both the wheelbase (3079 millimetres) and the length (5063 millimetres) are increased by 140 millimetres. The rear compartment of the luxury sedan offers an extra 134 millimetres of legroom for the occupants. CAR NEWS TATA TIAGO AMT Tata Motors has launched a new variant of the Tata Tiago, The Tiago Easy-Shift AMT. The Tiago AMT will be available in the XZA variant with the 1.2 litre 3 cylinder Revotron petrol engine. The car will be on sale across the country in over 597 Tata Motors sales outlets. The Tiago Easy Shift AMT comes equipped with four gear positions – Automatic, Neutral, Reverse and Manual. In addition, it boasts of 2 drive modes– Sports & City, for a peppy driving experience and city cruising. While the sports mode is for performance oriented drivers, the City mode helps zip through traffic with complete ease. The Manual mode helps shift gears at a flick of a gear stick. For ease of manoeuvrability in heavy traffic conditions and during parking, Tiago Easy Shift AMT comes with an in-built ‘creep’ feature, which enables the car to crawl as soon as the pressure is eased off the brake pedal, without pressing the accelerator. VOLKSWAGEN INDIA ANNOUNCES NEW PRODUCT LINE-UP FOR 2017 German car maker Volkswagen has announced its India line-up for the year 2017 and is all set to introduce the Tiguan and Passat in India. The Tiguan is based on the MQB (modular transverse matrix) platform. With a 2.0L TDI engine mated to a 7- speed DSG gearbox the Tiguan delivers good driving performance and comes with several modern features. The new Passat sedan is also based on the MQB platform Passat will also be powered with a 2.0L TDI engine mated to a 6-speed DSG gearbox. For the first time in India Volkswagen Passat will offer 9 airbags providing additional safety for the passengers. The company also has a limited Edition 3 door GTI equipped with a 1.8L 4-cylinder TSI engine mated to a 7-speed automatic DSG transmission producing 189hpof power. Marking a strong line-up with the Ameo, GTI, Tiguan and Passat, Volkswagen will have fresh new products to offer in 2017. BIKE NEWS YAMAHA YZF-R3, CYGNUS RAY-ZR WIN INDIA DESIGN MARK (I MARK) India Yamaha Motor has received the prestigious India Design Mark (I Mark) certification from the India Design Council for its products, the YZF-R3 and Cygnus Ray-ZR. This is the 6th consecutive year that Yamaha has received this certification. Since 2012, Yamaha has received the I Mark certification for products like YZF-R15 version 2.0 (2012), Cygnus Ray (2013), Cygnus Ray Z (2014), Cygnus Alpha (2015), FZ-S FI version 2.0 (2015), Yamaha Fascino scooter and Saluto 125 bike (2016). India Design Council is an autonomous body of Government of India established under the aegis of Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry comprising of eminent people in academia, design and industry organisations. The India Design Council has initiated India Design Mark in cooperation with Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP). India Design Mark symbol is a trustworthy indicator of excellence. The symbol can be used in a wide range of ways, such as advertisements, catalogues, product packaging, and other promotional mediums. The YZF–R3 motorcycle is powered by 321 cc, liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, in-line 2-cylinder, fuel-injected engine. Cygnus Ray-ZR was developed around the concept of a “Next-Generation Real Boy’s Scooter.” The Cygnus Ray-ZR is powered by an air-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, 2-valve, 113cc “BLUE CORE” engine with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) unit. It features a lightweight body (103 kg).
NEW HONDA ACTIVA 4G Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI) launched a new fourth generation upgrade to their popular Activa 110cc automatic scooter. Highlights of the new model are that it is BSIV compliant and has an AHO function. Powering the new Activa 4G is the 109cc, single cylinder engine which is capable of producing 8bhp at 7500rpm and 9Nm of torque at 5500rpm. Honda has added two new colours to the lineup -- Matt Selene Silver Metallic and Matte Axis Grey Metallic, which brings the total colours on offer to 7. Honda has refreshed the Activa in terms of looks and the new Activa 4G gets contemporary style elements like a front centre cover design. The new scooter also features a mobile charging socket, tubeless tyres, generous under seat storage and Convenient Lift up Independent Cover (CLIC) for ease of maintenance. DSK HYOSUNG INTRODUCES 100 LIMITED EDITION 2017 VARIANTS OF AQUILA 250 DSK Hyosung, a leading premium superbike player has announced 100 limited edition Aquila 250 motorcycles in three colour options. The special edition cruiser bikes will be available in Matte Green, Carbon Black, and Desert Brown and will be available across all DSK Hyosung dealerships. The Aquila 250 cruiser bike is powered by a 4-stroke, V-twin, 249cc DOHC engine. Equipped with front telescopic suspension and hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear, the cruiser bike comes with a fuel capacity of 14 litres – ensuring long rides with less fuel stops. rules of road transportation. ITALDESIGN AND AIRBUS unveiled the Pop.Up during its world premiere at the show. It is the first modular, fully electric, zero emission concept vehicle system designed to relieve traffic congestion in crowded megacities. Pop.Up envisages a modular system for multi-modal

fine tradition of Aston Martin ‘V’ cars. Valkyrie name is taken from ancient Norse mythology . AUDI: Audi presented six new models at the show. Making their world premieres were the Audi Q8 sport concept, which is powered by a 3.0 TFSI V6 engine with a mild hybrid system, and the new RS 5 Coupé – the Gran Turismo of RS models. BENTLEY: Luxury car maker Bentley Motors

JAGUAR LAND ROVER: The Jaguar I-Pace Concept made its European motor show debut in a new colour - Photon Red. A few days later the Jaguar I-Pace Concept was driven on the streets of London for the first time. (Jaguar Land Rover is owned by Tata Motors) The I-Pace, Jaguar’s first electric vehicle will be launched in 2018 and will be revealed in late 2017. The I-Pace will be a long distance sprinter that accelerates to 60 mph in around 4 seconds, with a range of more than 500km (NEDC cycle) from the 90kWh lithium-ion battery. JLR also unveiled the Range Rover Velar, the fourth member of the Range Rover family. The luxury SUV was created in 1970 when Land Rover launched the original Range Rover. LAMBORGHINI: Automobili Lamborghini unveiled the Huracán Perfomante, a
Jaguar I-Pace Concept car that combines new lightweight technologies, active aerodynamics with aero vectoring and a new set-up of chassis, all-wheel-drive system and further improved powertrain. The enhanced naturally aspirated Huracán engine is the most powerful V10 produced to date by Lamborghini. Outputting 640 hp at 8,000 rpm and producing 600 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm, it is distinguished by a new bronze manifold that draws on the heritage of previous special edition engines such as the Diablo 30th Anniversary power plant. MASERATI: Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio celebrated the 60th anniversary of the 3500 GT, the very first GT car that segmented the market in 1957, with a Special Edition; the production run will be limited

The ultra-light, all carbon fiber supercar fuses the vision of F1 and Indy Car racing champion Fittipaldi, iconic Italian design

At the heart of the latest enhancement beats a fourlitre flat engine. The extremely high-revving naturally aspirated engine with 500 hp remains virtually unchanged from the thoroughbred 911 GT3 Cup racing car. The car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. Its boasts a top speed of 318 km/h. For proponents of pure unadulterated driving, Porsche also offers the 911 GT3 with a six-speed sports

New Volvo XC60 brands Renault, Alpine and Dacia at the show. Renault presented two world premieres. Fun and powerful, the ZOE e-Sport Concept boasts a standstillto-100kph acceleration time worthy of a supercar. Renault’s new vision of electric motoring channels both its EV expertise and its winning record in the FIA Formula E Championship. Meanwhile, Renault’s product offensive in Europe continues as it enters new market segments with the Alaskan, a one-tonne pick-up, and strengthens its comprehensive line-up of crossovers with the alreadypopular New Captur, and the upper range New Koleos. TOYOTA: Toyota unveiled a daring concept designed to show that future electric vehicles can be fun to drive as well as being environmentally friendly. The i-TRIL Concept that made its world debut at the show, is a viable alternative to city cars, other electric vehicles, public transport and motorcycles. At just three metres long,

1,510mm high and featuring 1,200mm front and 600mm rear tracks, the compact i-TRIL offers spacious seating for three adults in a one-plus-two layout. It is driven by electric-motor power and weighs a mere 600kg (about half the weight of a conventional small car) with Toyota aiming at a range of more than 200km between charges. VOLVO AUTO: Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, revealed the long-awaited new XC60 premium SUV at the show. The new car replaces Volvo’s highly-successful original XC60, which in the nine years since its launch became the bestselling premium mid-sized SUV in Europe with nearly a million units sold globally. The XC60 today represents around 30 per cent of Volvo’s total global sales. The
new XC60, one of the safest cars ever made, is fully-loaded with new technology. Steer Assist has been added to the ground-breaking City Safety system. A new safety system called Oncoming Lane Mitigation uses steer assist to help mitigate head-on collisions, while Volvo’s Blind Spot Indication. Volvo Cars’ new XC60 is set to go into production in mid-April at the Torslanda Plant in Sweden.
VOLKSWAGEN: For Volkswagen it was the world premiere of the new Volkswagen Arteon at the Geneva motor show. Both elegant and dynamic, it offers a remarkable amount of space and comfort with its coupé-like lines. The newly developed fastback model has the latest generation driver assistance systems, which in the past have been reserved for higher car classes.

ll of us who were there at the recent Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland would vouch for the fact that there is another word besides Namo that is getting popular by the day and that is TaMo from Tata Motors. The company pleasantly surprised visitors with
a brilliantly designed car that goes by the name of Racemo, besides of course showcasing the Geneva edition of the Tigor and the Nexon. Moving on to the new Tata Tigor, it is basically the sedan version of the popular Tiago from the Tata Motors stable. In fact it comes with the same engine options as the Tiago

i.e. a Revotron 1199cc three cylinder petrol engine which produces 84hp @6000rpm and a peak torque of 114 Nm @ 3500 rpm and a 3 cylinder Revotorq 1047cc, 3 cylinder, diesel mill which produces 69bhp@4000rpm and a peak torque of 140Nm @18003000rpm. Both the engines are mated to a five speed manual
transmission. But what it does not get from the Tiago is an automatic transmission. That will have to wait for some time, says the company. The Tigor notchback will go up against the likes of the Maruti DZire, Hyundai Xcent, Ford Figo Aspire, Honda Amaze and Volkswagen Ameo. The Tigor has been derived

EXTERIOR The Tigor is quite similar to the Tiago right upto the C pillar which then slopes into a well formed boot, giving the Tigor a stylish notchback look. Maybe that’s the reason why Tata Motors calls this car the Tigor StyleBack. The car has a dual-coloured bumper with the Tata Signature Grille, which is accentuated with a chrome humanity line at the front, with the looks further enhanced by the crystal-like, smoked projector headlamps. What’s new here is that the honeycomb grille has undergone a subtle change for the better and the headlamps are also newly designed ones. Unfortunately, there are no DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) which are in vogue these days. The side profile is enhanced with 15 inch alloys. While the petrol variant gets the 15 inches alloys, the diesel variant has to make do with only 14 inches

alloys. One wonders why? Tata Motors engineers and stylists have worked pretty hard to get the right design flow beyond the C pillar. The belt line seamlessly extends into the boot section of the sedan. The rear features split tail lamps with a chrome strip between them and a long LED stop lamp fitted high above the descending roof line. INTERIOR If you are bowled over by the stylish exterior, you would be pleasantly surprised by the interiors too. In order to make the cabin both chic and practical, Tata Motors has given a darker shade to the dual tone dashboard with the centre console area having a piano black finish. The quality of plastic used is quite upmarket, giving it a rich look and feel. Good quality stretch fabric has been used on the smartly patterned seats of the Tigor and they have been designed with enough bolsters to give the occupants enough under thigh support

as well as decent back support. Legroom for the passengers, especially in the rear is more than adequate, thanks to a large wheel base, the best in the segment. The rear seat now comes with an arm rest in the middle and once folded back, it can accommodate another individual who also gets a small little head rest. Not to miss is a premium knitted roof Liner. As for storage spaces for cups, bottles, mobiles, etc there are 24 utility spaces within the cabin. There is also a huge boot space of around 419 litres which can be fully utilised because the company has smartly done away with the traditional goose neck hinges that would never allow the cargo area to be fully utilised. Instead there are these two pneumatic cylinders that open the boot lid. There is no button or switch to lock the doors from the driver’s side, rather it is the traditional push down / pull up lock mechanism which is there on the inner door frame. Come on Tata, you can do a lot better than that! As for the

boot lid release button on the front console, this becomes active only when the ignition key is turned on fully, engaging the battery. One can also open the boot lid with the key from the outside. The Tigor now has two 12V power outlets, one in the front console area and the other one on the floor console area, the latter addressing the charging needs for those in the rear seat. Automatic climate controls come as a new feature in the Tigor. Not to miss on the dash area is a new infotainment experience for the occupants. The Tigor continues to have 8 speakers from Harman. What’s new here is that the infotainment system comes with a 5” touchscreen

enabled with video playback, voice command recognition, SMS readout and display for the rear parking assist camera. Steering mounted controls are there for adjusting volume and activating voice control. While the system is equipped with a comprehensive app suite with dedicated apps for Navigation – NaviMaps sharing music on-the-go, Juke Car App as well as a Bluetooth based remote – Tata Smart Remote, and a Tata Emergency Assist app, these are compatible to only android smartphones. PERFORMANCE Even though the engines powering the Tigor are the same ones that power the Tiago,

delivering similar amounts of power and torque, it does not seem underpowered at all, despite the fact the Tigor is now 50 kgs heavier in its notchback avatar. Both engines are available with multi-drive modes – Eco and City. The Eco mode is for the more sedate driver, while the City mode, which is also the default mode, optimises engine output for a peppy driving experience and efficiency. The small chunky steering wheel is pure Italian in its genetic buildup and feels quite sporty. The steering wheel is tilt adjustable but is not telescopic. The Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) is designed for a light steering feel and for easy maneuvering. Despite its added length, the car
is planted to the road at high speeds and with its dual path suspension in front and rear, allows good ride and handling. NVH levels in both petrol and diesel are well under control. When it comes to safety, the Tigor has dual front airbags, an energy absorbing body structure, an advance AntiLock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Corner Stability Control (CSC) for improved braking efficiency. All in all, the Tigor is a brilliant product from Tata Motors. It’s obvious that the company has turned a new leaf when it comes to smart design, stylish looks, upmarket performance and reliability.

The new Honda WR-V which comes in both petrol and diesel engine option (a 1.5L, i-DTEC, diesel and a 1.2L, i-VTEC, petrol engine) could give cars like the Hyundai i20 Active, Toyota Etios Cross, Volkswagen Cross Polo, the Mahindra KUV 100 and several other compact SUVs and
crossovers a stiff competition. Honda has termed the WR-V as a ‘Sporty Lifestyle Vehicle’. While the diesel engine is quite peppy with a turbo that kicks in as early as 1500rpm, and liner power delivery, the petrol engine seems to lose steam as the car is pushed into higher gears. It seems a tad under powered. Both the 1.5L diesel and 1.2L
petrol which is being offered by Honda on the WR-V deliver very good mileage figures. While Honda claims the diesel to return 25.5kmpl the petrol will return 17.5kmpl. The diesel mill puts out 98.6bhp at 3600rpm and 200Nm of torque at 1750rpm. The 1.5L i-DTEC diesel mill has been mated to a 6-speed manual transmission which has a wider

The 1.2L i-VTEC petrol engine has been mated to a new 5-speed manual transmission with a cross gear ratio and has lower gear ratios in comparison to the 6-speed transmission. The final gear on this new transmission has been set to a lower ratio for improved acceleration. The 1.2L, i-VTEC, engine puts out 88.74bhp at 6000rpm and 110Nm of torque at 4600rpm. The difference between the top end diesel and petrol versions of the WR-V is that while the diesel engine is mated to a six speed gear box, the petrol engine is mated to a new 5-speed gearbox. As

far as features are concerned, the diesel car has a start stop button while it’s missing in the petrol version. The diesel model also comes with cruise control buttons on the steering wheel while this feature is missing entirely in the petrol version. Honda has designed the WR-V around a few key factors such as a high ground clearance, high seating stance, maneuverable, compact exterior, spacious interiors, high quality interiors and high fuel efficiency. The front fascia features a sharp headlamp cluster with LED DRLs and positioning lamps, the rear gets a polygonal design for the tail lamps which have been integrated into the boot lid. The front gets horizontal lines, a wing faced grille design and an

imposing bumper with oodles of plastic cladding. The sides feature bold cladding all around with 16 inch alloys and roof rails to enhance its macho appeal. Honda will be offering the WR-V in 6 different colour schemes. The interiors of the new WR-V also get 2 colour themes -- Urban Casual (Black & Bluish grey seat fabric) and Urban Sophisticated (Black & Silver). The WR-V features a McPherson Strut suspension in the front and a Torsion Beam in the rear. This crossover will also get an electronic power steering with adjustment available for rake and reach.

aruti Suzuki may be the No.1 car manufacturer in the country and their cars may be the best when it comes to utilitarian advantages. But driving a stock car from Maruti Suzuki on an international high speed race circuit could seem a bit farfetched an idea. Well in all honesty, I entered the BIC (Buddh International Circuit) with the thought that this was just another day at work, with me behind the wheel of yet another car with a fancy name. But what was to come next would simply baffle my logical perception. Yes, I knew there were a few changes in the output figures, no. of cylinders, kerb weight, chassis and suspension. But how well would all of these changes fit on Maruti’s latest baby? Settling in behind the wheel, I gently nudged the accelerator, an almost instant throttle response added a little glee to my expression. As I began pushing the RS a little harder, I was stupefied at how effortlessly this hatchback responded to my demands. Its little 1.0 litre, turbocharged, petrol engine is not humble in the
least, I would rather describe it as the Looney Toons character ‘Taz’. Like an over eager kid in a candy store, I began redlining the Baleno RS on every gear. Mated to a 5 speed transmission, the 1.0L, Boosterjet engine turns 150Nm of torque from 1700-4500rpm and a neat 100.5bhp at 5500rpm. The revs build up in a linear fashion right upto the 6000rpm mark. Despite being turbo charged, the RS has been tuned to deliver power to the front wheels in a seamless manner. Pushing this hot hatch hard on the back straight of the BIC, I was able to achieve a top speed of 172kmph and ran out of road before I could up-shift to 5th gear. The RS is quick through the first two gears, the 3rd and 4th gears have long legs, giving this hatch ample of capability to rev and stretch its legs. Even the gear shifts are smooth and easy to slot, though

I would have loved it if the gear box had shorter throws to improve the sporty appeal of the Baleno RS. Maruti has also included disc brakes on all four wheels, the brakes are progressive and immensely capable and can easily bring this hatch to a halt in seconds. The suspension leans marginally on the stiffer side and feels sporty. Maruti has not dropped the ride height of the Baleno RS. Even the chassis felt a little rigid thus giving the driver more

control, especially while taking corners and speeding out of them. What delighted me most about the Baleno RS was its tail happy nature. It will bring out its rear on sharp corners, but even the gentlest of taps on the accelerator pedal will bring it back in line. There is minimal intrusion from driver aides and its more about the man at the wheel than the technology behind it, thus making it better than competitors and a true driver’s car.

Along with performance, Maruti has also included some safety aspects on the Baleno RS. Launched in the single Alpha variant, the Baleno RS complies with pedestrian safety norms, side and frontal offset impact norms, well before the deadline. Maruti has also slapped on ISOFIX mounts along with dual airbags, seatbelts with pretensioners and force limiters, ABS & EBD and an extensive use of high strength steel in construction. The Baleno RS features most of the kit

that one gets on the regular version of the car along with the addition of a sportier body kit which includes skirting all around, black alloys (same design as standard Baleno), a re-designed front bumper and grille as well as a redesigned rear bumper. To look at there is no stark difference but simple and subtle cues. On the inside the Baleno RS does not feature any updates and the additions of some sportier seats along with mildly tweaked upholstery could have gone a long way with pleasing the customer even more. That being said, if you are behind the wheel of the RS, it won’t really matter because the Baleno RS has the tenacity of drawing your attention to the road ahead. Boiling things down to the price, the RS will cost Rs. 8.69 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). In my opinion this hatch deserves it! Yes it gets a 1.0L, 3 cylinder engine with a power figure of 100bhp but the Baleno RS has a good power to weight ratio, weighing in at just 950kgs. The hatch has also got an ARAI certified fuel average of 21.1kms to a litre, which is quite impressive. All these things combined with Maruti’s service network, economical cost of service and availability of parts, makes the Baleno RS one juicy bet for any petrol head.

The power delivery is seamless and feels like a surge right from the word go. Adding to the pleasure is a 6-Speed DSG gearbox which has been mated to this engine for a more refined drive experience. If you haven’t heard about the DSG transmission, let me tell you it is one of the smoothest gearboxes I have ever come across. Gear shifts are seamless, as smooth as a baby’s bottom sliding over melted butter and also offers a sports mode along with paddle shifters, making me a happy customer behind this wheel. Even to look at, the Superb is svelte. Featuring smooth and chiseled lines that add to the dapper character this sedan has got going for it. A clean and straight belt line running from the front, along the side, right to the rear personifies its elegance in a whetted fashion. Housing projector headlamps in the front with LED DRLs, the fascia of the Superb is imposing and bold. The rear LED tail lamps also add flavor to its sharp design and give it an awe inspiring persona. Step into the cabin and its warm earthy interiors ooze of class and finesse. A rich blend of black and beige blend technology seamlessly for a opulent user experience. Featuring some top class kit, the Skoda Superb gets ample of knobs, buttons and functions to play around with. For convenience, consumers get a three zone automatic climate control, power adjusted front seats with a memory function for the driver’s seat, virtual pedal for boot lid release which opens up 625 litres of boot space and many more such handy functions to ease daily usage. The sedan rides on a mildly soft suspension which proved great to drive on Indian roads. It gobbles up most undulations and bumps quite easily and can tackle the worst of terrain quite well. With discs on all four wheels, the Superb gets potent braking which is progressive in nature and extremely reliable. Since this vehicle can gather high speeds pretty

easily the well engineered brakes also aid driver confidence. Apart from airbags, the saloon gets features like a driver attention assist, ABS with EBD, Hill Hold and Descent control, Multi-Collision braking and adaptive headlamps. ust when a few of us thought that Yamaha champ FZ16 seemed to be losing steam, the company has brought in a new bike to set the tracks ablaze. The strapping new champion is the FZ25. Well sculpted and bold, this new mid-class street fighter has captivated many ever since its launch earlier this year. I landed in Goa to take a shot at it around some twisties and narrow streets. One look at the spec sheet and I knew this bike would demonstrate gazelle like agility. Boasting a kerb weight of just 148kgs, combined with 20Nm of torque and 20.6bhp, the FZ25 has a good power to weight ratio. It comes built on diamond type tubular frame which I found to be adequately rigid and a precision engineered suspension setup that comprises of telescopic forks up front and a monocross swingarm in the rear. The single cylinder, 249cc, fuel injected motor puts out its peak power of 20.6bhp at 8000rpm
and peak torque of 20Nm at 6000rpm. Catering to a smooth and powerful climb up the rev band, the low end torque proves to be quite thrilling. Mated to a 5-speed constant mesh, the FZ25 goes through the first two gears quite fast and helps the bike climb up to the 100kmph mark easily. This motorcycle is happy cruising between 110-120kmph, but post 130kmph it does feel a wee bit sluggish. The meaty midrange also helps in speedy overtakes and is handy while riding on highways. The combination of the diamond type frame and suspension setup along with the light weight enables this motorcycle to change its line very swiftly and in a sure footed manner. While on some tight corners, you won’t need to second guess your moves and can throttle up while
exiting with the tyres lending you more than adequate grip. The suspension leans mildly to the stiffer side and is adept at tackling most of the undulations you will face on Indian roads. Yamaha has also bolted on disc brakes to the front and rear wheels of the bike. While the front gets a 282mm disc, the rear features a 220mm disc brake. The front disc comes with a 2 pot caliper, while the rear
gets a single pot version. The brakes are extremely efficient, even while braking hard I did not get any major wheel lockup which caused a tail out on the FZ25. Yes, ABS would have been a very welcomed addition to the bike and could have been offered as an optional higher variant. That being said, the braking setup on this bike even without ABS is pretty darn good. To look at the FZ25 boasts

to be a hassle free motorcycle thanks to Yamaha’s engineering prowess. Be it city riding or on the highway the Yamaha FZ25 will not let you down, what would have made things even more enticing would have been the additions of a slipper clutch and ABS. The bike offers a fuel efficiency of
43kms to a litre and comes in at a price point of just Rs1.19 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi), making it a lucrative option, not to be overlooked.

T
he future of motorcycling has arrived. It takes the shape of a bike which combines the best of the cruiser world with the DNA and racing heritage of Italian stalwart Ducati. Christened the XDiavel, this motorcycle looks and feels like a cruiser but packs a meaner punch, especially when you push it harder. But Ducati would not stop there. They launched a sportier looking version of an already exquisite motorcycle and called it the XDiavel S. It is the perfect blend of a cruiser and a sport bike. Essentially the XDiavel S is the very same motorcycle as the XDiavel and does not get any mechanical or functional changes. Ducati has designed it to look sportier and even more modish than it already was. It features a high gloss black paint job all around with the same finish on the engine as well. Contrasting the paint work are machined bits here and there which add to a rugged appeal. The XDiavel S also sports turbine like six fin alloys which give the motorcycle a distinct identity no matter where you go. The bike is low slung, long and muscular in its appearance, all of this while being extremely comfortable to cruise on highways or ride in the city as well. At the heart of the XDiavel S is a 1262cc, L-Twin, Liquid Cooled, Ducati Testastretta DVT (Desmodromic Variable Timing) engine which whips out 156hp on the tarmac at a blistering 9500rpm. This new engine also enables the rider with smooth torque at a lower rpm and sports bike like performance at open throttle. The Testastretta DVT engine can bruise the road with a peak torque of 128Nm which comes in as low as 5000rpm. To further this mechanical

prowess of the XDiavel S, Ducati has enabled the bike with three different riding modes -- Urban, Touring and Sport, the rider can chose any of these at the flick of a button. While in urban mode, the throttle response is slightly sluggish and one can happily ride around town without too many jolts and jerks. The XDiavel S has also been equipped with a ride by wire throttle system which ensures smooth acceleration irrespective of throttle inputs. The Touring and Sport modes get a better throttle response which is more crisp and accurate. To milk the machine for all that its worth, one can simply select the Sport mode and the XDiavel S will not fail to deliver a prime performance. The linear power delivery ensures you hit your mark and a mid range peak torque will ensure the rider gets an adrenaline rush each time he opens up the throttle. Ducati has also ensured the XDiavel S gets adequate stopping power, the bike gets two 320mm discs upfront with two pot calipers each and a 265mm disc in the rear with a two pot caliper. Braking performance is progressive and definitely inspires confidence. Like most cruiser motorcycles, the Ducati XDiavel S also provides a very ergonomic seating posture which maximises rider comfort. The rider seat height has been set at 755mm and the rider can also adjust the foot pegs in three different positions. A small niggle I have with the bike is the position of the pillion foot peg which has been placed right over the exhaust, on highways this will not be too much of an issue but in the city your pillion may just have his or her foot roasted. Speaking of a roast, the heat dissipation from the engine is also quite good and even while riding in the city no substantial amount of discomfort is

experienced. Continuing with the Ducati build tradition, the XDiavel S has been built on a steel trellis frame which provides the right amount of rigidity and control. Coupled with the frame are USD telescopic forks upfront and a one sided cast swingarm in the rear. The XDiavel S rides on 170/70 RZ 17 tires in the front and 240/45 RZ17 in the rear. Both are Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires which provide ample of grip on varying surfaces. The suspension setup along with the trellis frame and Pirelli tires empowers the rider to achieve a maximum lean angle of 40 degrees. So even if you are up in the mountains or riding on some winding scenic roads you can take this motorcycle

to its limits and not worry about second guessing your every move. To further their engineering prowess, Ducati has also added Bosch Cornering ABS + DTC which comes in as a standard safety pack. Ducati has also fitted the bike with cruise control and DPL (Ducati Power Launch) to entertain, thrill and enable biking aficionados all over the world. No matter where you go on this motorcycle, it is bound to drop jaws. The reason is quite simple; it’s nothing like you have ever seen before. It is not really contemporary but rather futuristic in every sense and translates into a truly liberating ride. What is not liberating is its price tag of Rs. 19.48 lakh. But then again, not all good things in life come cheap.

hen I was packing my luggage with trepidation and uncertainty, considering that this was my very first adventure trip, I could only think of cold weather, lifestyle changes, food troubles, stomach woes and not to mention elusive wild creatures. I asked myself “Why did I plan this trip?� I should have probably stayed with some small
adventure trip around Mumbai. But, in my heart I knew that I wanted to do something very different. I wanted to get away from the city and challenge myself to achieve something that I had not done so far. Reminding myself of this, I set the alarm and went to sleep. The next morning, the thoughts were the same. Butterflies were merrily prancing in my stomach till the time I

stepped outside Chandigarh airport and saw the smiling TRLT (The Road Less Travelled ) team member welcoming me.
A DREAM TRIP I met my fellow travellers for the first time. We were six of us - each one from interesting and different walks of life. We set out in two Maruti Suzuki Gypsy vehicles (considered one
of the best navigators in such off road terrains) and a 4x4 Ford Endeavour. Our first stop was lunch at the iconic Pal Dhaba in Chandigarh. Once were through with a full meal comprising of saag, mutton, chicken and more, washed down with lassi, we hit the road. I consider myself a fairly good driver but I had never driven along new terrains especially

But then, as we drove towards Kalpa, where we halted for the night, the air was reverberating with an energy which was only expected as we were right next to the formidable Kinner Kailash range. That full moon night, when we reached Kalpa, the sight of the moonlight shimmering in the snow left us breathless with its beauty. We stayed at The Grand Shambhala – a charming beautiful boutique hotel overlooking the Kinner Kailash range. The temperature was a freezing -10 degrees. All the rooms were equipped with heaters. The chefs conjured up a full meal comprising of salad, papad, dal, vegetables, chicken, roti and rice, and fresh dessert. I was looking forward to the frozen Nako lake, which was apparently halfway between Kalpa and Mane. Yes, I know a frozen lake should be expected on a frozen route to a frozen valley with frozen, sorry, the only living thing that’s probably way too comfortable in the freeze. But yet, the sight was like ‘Yo and behold.’ It was

Vettel wins opening F1 race in Australia
A
fter a winless season in 2016, Ferrari came back fully charged with Sebastian Vettel winning the opening race of the 2017 Formula 1 season. At the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix Sebastian Vettel beat Lewis Hamilton. With Nico Rosberg retiring, Hamilton’s new Mercedes team mate, Valtteri Bottas, completed the Albert Park podium. Vettel took the chequered flag almost 10 seconds clear to clinch Ferrari’s first win since Singapore 2015, with team mate Kimi Raikkonen fourth. Sebastian Vettel crossed the finish line in first place after 57 laps, in a race whose key moment came on lap 23, when a perfectly executed pit stop for fresh tyres saw him rejoin the track ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes. This is Scuderia Ferrari’s 225th Formula 1 victory, Seb’s 43rd and his fourth with the Maranello team. It was also his and the Prancing Horse’s first since the
Sebastian Vettel 2015 Singapore Grand Prix, 28 races ago. It’s only the second time in his career that Vettel has won the opening round of the season. The other time was in 2011 when he dominantly led the championship from start to finish. Incidentally the start was in Australia and one of the crucial races was held in India’s
Buddh International Circuit. He was then racing for Red Bull Racing Renault. For India’s Vijay Mallya controlled Sahara Force India, there was good news as the team scored seven when Sergio Perez raced to a well-earned seventh place finish, while Esteban Ocon scored his first
point in Formula One with a strong drive to tenth place. Hamilton who had started in pole position, led the way in the initial part of the race, leaving Vettel to chase him, but the Mercedes had consumed its ultrasoft Pirelli tyres after 17 laps, whereas Vettel managed to get his to the 22nd lap before making his sole pit stop. When Hamilton came out of the pits he had to be behind Max Verstappen’s fifth placed Red Bull, and simply could not pass it despite running on new tyres. Vettel was able to make his stop and emerge still in the lead, much to the discomfort of Mercedes. Vettel thus leads the drivers’ points table with 25 points to Hamilton’s 18, Bottas’ 15, Raikkonen’s 12, Verstappen’s 10, Massa’s eight, Perez’s six, Sainz’s four, Kvyat’s two and Ocon’s one. Ferrari also head the constructors’ stakes with 37 points to Mercedes’ 33, as Red Bull have 10, Williams eight, Force India seven and Toro Rosso six.

Yamaha’s Vinales wins opening round of 2017 MotoGP
I
t was a perfect start from Movistar Yamaha at the 2017 MotoGP season which began in Qatar as Maverick Viñales secured a great win while teammate Valentino Rossi put in a stellar performance during the opening round at the Losail International Circuit, finishing in third place. The Qatar race was interrupted by rain, delays and uncertainty which saw the number of laps being reduced to 20. Then out of the blue stormed Maverick Viñales, beating Andrea
Dovizioso (Ducati Team) in a thrilling desert duel. Valentino Rossi completed the podium in third after coming back from P10 on the grid. As all sessions were cancelled the previous day, due to standing water on the track, thereby lessening the riders’ time to practice and perfect their race settings, the level of adrenaline on the grid was even higher than usual. The race start then being delayed twice, due to sudden
rain causing dangerous track conditions, added even more to the tension. Eventually, after two warm-up laps to give the riders a feel for the track, the race got under way 45 minutes later than scheduled. Viñales secured his first MotoGP pole position thanks to a stunning lap in FP1, but it didn’t help him at the start of the shortened 20-lap race. The young Spaniard gunned off the line and arrived at the first corner
in second place, but had to sit up as 23 riders dashed through the first corner, losing him time and positions and pushing him back to fifth. He slowly picked up the pace as he got a feel for the conditions and, feeling the hot breath of his teammate down his neck, six laps into the race, he knew exactly when to put the hammer down. As fellow Yamaha rider, Johann Zarco crashed out of the lead, the Spanish youngster saw the promise of a podium position dangling in front of him.

THARYAN You supply Automated Manual Transmissions (AMTs) to some leading auto majors in the country. Has this technology evolved big time in India? Pietro Gorlier (PG) : AMT is a great solution for automation of the gear box, particularly for a market like India where the price point is very important. We see a couple of possible evolution points for the AMTs. One is the continuous development of a solution to reduce the cost of AMT to make it even more competitive. We have then the evolution of the technology into the dual clutch transmission that is possible as the next type of transmission when you want to grow into the automatic gearbox space. Last but not least is hybridisation of the automatic gear box, i.e. applying 12 volt motor that provides a form of hybridisation of 12 V or 40 V depending on the type of power you want to use to make the transmission more hybrid and also to contribute to new emission targets that are there in all markets, whether it is Euro VI in Europe or Bharat Stage (BS) VI in India. We seen an evolution of the transmission, but we still think it is a very efficient way to provide an automated transmission for markets like India. Which are the companies
you are in talks with for your AMTs, besides Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki? PG: These are the two companies we are in discussions right now on the evolution of the AMT. Saju Mookken (SM): We are also talking to other car makers. When the automation of the market is increasing, as you see three years ago there was around 2pc automation in the market, now with the AMT coming in, the automation pace has increased. With this, many of the automakers in India, apart from the names you mentioned, are also discussing with us eventually to introduce the product in their cars. PG: We do not disclose names of our future customers, except our current customers. You need to consider that our powertrain business is spread across almost every OEMs, and outside India we have cooperation with names like Volkswagen, GM, FCA, Mazda, to name a few. What is Magneti Marelli’s outlook on the future of powertrains especially as electric vehicles are beginning to become popular worldwide? PG: With the future emission limits some sort of electrification of powertrain

will be required. We see probably an increase in hybrids, but together with that development of some full electric vehicles. Every OEM seems to be working on this dual strategy, starting with mild hybrids. What is important is that the price point of electric vehicles will be relatively high for the next five to ten years. There is still a lot to be done in improving the emission of conventional engines. For instance, the high pressure injectors (GDIs) improve emissions in these engines. The growth for diesel engines may plateau but I do not see them disappearing. Globally your revenues stood at Euros 7.9 billion in 2016. How much does India contribute to this? PG: India is a strong asset in our group. We have worldwide 86 production plants, of which 12 are in India. That is a strong sign of our commitment in this country. Our revenues in India is around Rs 1500 crore (15 billion). We have a solid plan to improve this revenue at a significant pace. In 2016, the revenues grew 10pc. That is a good improvement, but obviously we plan to keep on growing. The proportion to our global sales is small but you need to consider not just the proportion in terms of revenues but the content in terms of vehicles. The
average cost of cars in India as compared to the average cost of cars in the rest of the world is significantly different. For example in Europe and North America, we supply full LED lamps, GDI injectors, high powered electric engines... so these we do not produce in India. For our presence in India for the last ten years, since 2007, it’s a good start here. My predecessor had said that we want to triple our revenues from where we were in 2015. SM: The first manufacturing plant was commissioned here in 2008. We put up the plants here step by step. From this perspective, it’s not that all our plants were there from 2007-8. What is the scope of exports out of India? SM: For different business we have different levels of exports. For example in electronics, in engine control units we produce out of India and export it to different parts of the world. In shock absorbers, we supply directly into Europe and US. Exports from business to business vary. A significant part of business is exports. Obviously the plants here are made first for Indian market and support some export where it makes sense. PG: We have established our

presence in India to support the Indian market. But when we have an opportunity, we export. But the main target is Indian market. It is also part of our strategy of having this local presence to be able to provide support to our customers where they have their production plants. What are currently the major global trends when it comes to technology related to vehicles whether it is pertaining to power trains, connectivity, autonomous driving , etc? PG: There are three mega trends in the automotive market. One is the progressive electrification of the powertrain. The second is the connectivity of cars. The third is the trend in autonomous driving. First of all, it is important to realise that sometime when we talk of the three trends, we tend to look at the extreme band

You have the vision of Tesla on one end which is completely at the extreme spectrum, then there are a lot of intermediary visions that are trying to bridge the gap in such trends. These are moments of high investments for everyone. Is cyber security also going to an important area for Magneit Marelli to tackle while developing new products?
PG: Cyber security is becoming one of our business propositions. We have developed a local solution for cyber security but most important cyber security is very complicated as it relates to the architecture of the car. You need to know where to protect the car. We have developed a sort of programme to support customers in defining where to put the firewalls and create a cyber security. You cannot develop products without providing cyber security. But it also depends on how much the car is connected. Is the AMT business driving maximum growth for you in India? SM: We started our journey with the first joint venture with Maruti Suzuki. That’s where we produce the engine control unit. AMT has been a big boost. A few years ago there were not AMTs in the

Globally there are a few players in AMTs, but we are the leaders and we also have the first mover advantage. We have localised the product at the right time. What are the advantages that India offers for the success of Magneti Marelli business? PG: We have two R&D centres in India and we have around 500 engineers here. We have been growing constantly. India for us is also a very important hub when we have crash programmes where we develop something in two different in two different locations and we can do our 24X7 work wherein we work in Europe, US and then we pass it on to India. asset for us. With a highly qualified engineer base here in India speaking English, so it is easier for communication. Can you throw some light
on your activities in the motorsport arena? PG: Motorsport is important because it is an area where we do a lot of developments of the high end. I think our
highlights of the moment are that we are the unique suppliers for MotoGP of the ECU. It was the decision of Dorna to take a decision to provide everyone the same ECU. (Dorna Sports is the exclusive holder of all commercial and television rights relating to the MotoGP World Championship). In Formula One we supply components to some of the teams like Honda and Ferrari. We provide all the telemetry to Formula One. Motorsport is a developing ground wherein we work with top notch engineers. Last year we launched the high speed camera installed in front of the driver that takes high speed pictures and is mainly used in case of accidents to gauge the situation. Our first hybrid development was for Ferrari, the KERS of F1. From there we used some of the technologies in production vehicles.

remember as a child in school, I hated a few subjects and the moment I saw the teacher entering the class I would brood like no one’s business. Many years later I realised that it was not the subject that had to be blamed, but the teacher who taught the subject in a very boring way. It’s the same with commercial vehicles. It’s a B2B product and is always construed boring by motoring journalists. One fine day I decided that it’s time I begin my
experiment with these vehicles. I took upon the challenge to make these boring subjects come alive to the smart world of B2C vehicles. My journey began a few months back with a couple of Volvo luxury buses which I drove at the Volvo plant in Karnataka. Motown India viewers on youtube loved it and asked us to review lot more of such vehicles. When I got an opportunity to drive the Eicher Pro Series sub 5 tonne vehicle I was only too willing to travel to the Volvo
Eicher Commercial Vehicle (VECV) plant in Pithampur in Madhya Pradesh. I was a tad disappointed with the test track at the plant. It was being re constructed to extend the length of the plant. The track I had to test could barely test the speed of the vehicle because of its limited length. But then I decided not to brood and go ahead with my review. The Pro series of VECV consists of the 1000 SERIES (5 - 14 tonnes), 3000 SERIES (10
- 15 tonnes), 6000 SERIES (16 - 40 tonnes) and 8000 SERIES (25 - 49 tonnes). The Pro 1049 is the latest addition to the Pro 1000 series and is a sub 5 tonne vehicle. While the 8000 series is made at the Hoskote plant of Volvo Eicher in Karnataka, the others are made in Pithampur in Madhya Pradesh. Though the pro series 1049 comes in both BS III and BS IV engine options, I was thankfully given the one with the BS IV engine to drive. The Pro 1049 is

powered by an E483, 4 Cyl, 3.3L CRS diesel engine which delivers around 95hp @ 2600 rpm and a peak torque of 300 Nm @ 1600-1800 rpm. Trucks are not about speed and acceleration but rather about load bearing capacity and its pull power. Torque is a very important factor in such vehicles as they have to climb steep roads bearing tonnes of load. The diesel engine of the Pro 1049 is quite robust and it is mated to a five speed gearbox. Thankfully, this vehicle comes with a Hybrid Gear Shifting Lever (HGSL) which in essence offers less gear shifting effort and reduces driver fatigue. The vehicle has a contemporary designed cabin with “Pegasus” look in front and clear lens integrated headlamps. From the driver’s seat the view outside is wide and clear, thanks to the optimised design windshield. Among the sub 5 tonne vehicles in the CV segment in India, this one stands out for its practical features that it has to offer. Apart from the wide windscreen, the vehicle comes with tilt and telescopic steering, offering driver friendly 30 mm telescopic movement. But more than the looks and speed of a commercial vehicle, it is the spaciousness that really matters. The Pro 1049 has a

spacious cargo with around 5.6 Sqm with a loading deck length of 10ft “the longest” ideal for applications like fruits & vegetable, poultry, milk, LPG cylinder, water can distribution etc. Another practical feature is that it has a best in class cargo body height from the ground (1290 mm) which is suitable for easy and fast loading and unloading. While in passenger vehicles, it is the ease to enter and exit that really matters, here

ACMA Study on Indian Automotive Aftermarket: The Road Ahead
India’s leading two-wheeler manufacturer Bajaj Auto Ltd and Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Kawasaki have decided to end their alliance in India from April 1, 2017. This was stated in a press note issued by the company and signed by Amit Nandi, President of Probiking. Incidentally, Bajaj Auto has had an alliance with Kawasaki for the sale and after sales service of Kawasaki motorcycles through its Probiking network since 2009. Bajaj Auto has been progressively converted its Probiking network to be KTM dealerships. The Bajaj - KTM partnership, launched its first co-developed product, the 200 Duke in 2012. After April 1, 2017 Kawasaki motorcycles will be sold by India Kawasaki Motors Pvt Ltd (a 100% subsidiary of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Japan), established in India in July 2010 through its own dealer network. As for the after sales service, including that for past customers, will also be provided by this subsidiary company.
The Indian automotive aftermarket stood at Rs 56,098 crore (USD 8.4 billion) in 201617 with a total vehicle parc of 228.7 million across the country. The Indian automotive aftermarket is expected to reach Rs. 75,705 Crore (USD 13 billion) by 2019-20 exhibiting a CAGR of 10.5%. These were the findings of a study conducted by Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), the apex body of the Auto Component Industry in India entitled ‘Indian Automotive Aftermarket; The Road Ahead’. The study takes a holistic view of the aftermarket business potential with the growing impact of urbanisation in terms of changing customer preferences, choice of vehicle ownerships, evolving taxi market and a rise in pre-owned car segment. The study also highlights the average vehicle age in India and changing replacement frequencies and servicing patterns in passenger vehicles, two wheelers, commercial vehicles, tractors and off roads.
Volkswagen begins production of Tiguan in India German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen announced its commencement of production of the Tiguan SUV in India. The SUV will be manufactured at the companies Aurangabad facility. The production also marks the company’s entry into a growing SUV segment in India. First showcased in India at the 2016 Auto Expo in Delhi, the Tiguan is powered by 2.0L, Diesel, TDI engine which will be mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox. The Tiguan premium SUV will showcase Volkswagen’s core brand elements of safety, performance and fun driving experience. The Tiguan SUV carries a very sport design with luxurious interiors as well which feature Apple CarPlay, Android Auto connectivity and Driver Alert.

The theme of this year’s conference was “Challenge the Innovation for Global Competitiveness” and “It’s all about the Customer”. The objective for conducting the Annual Suppliers Conference was to share the last year’s result for Sales and Production and the current year’s Sales and Production Plan. Uno Minda Group in JV agreement with Katolec Corporation Minda Industries Limited, the flagship company of Uno Minda Group has entered into Joint Venture (JV) agreement with Katolec Corporation, Japan. The proposed name for the joint venture company is Minda Katolec Electronics Services Private Limited which shall be incorporated with MIL holding 51% and Katolec holding 49% of the equity. Tata Motors, Volkswagen Group, Skoda sign MOU Tata Motors has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a long-term partnership with Volkswagen Group and Skoda, to explore strategic alliance opportunity for joint development of products. The agreement has been signed by Guenter Butschek, CEO & MD of Tata Motors, Matthias Mueller, CEO of Volkswagen AG and Bernhard Maier, CEO of Skoda Auto. Skoda Auto will take the lead on behalf of the Volkswagen Group to drive forward work towards development of vehicle concepts in the economy segment. Tata Motors and Skoda Auto, representing the Volkswagen Group, will detail out the guiding principles and terms of cooperation in the next few months. Post successful completion of definitive agreements, the two companies will start joint development work and joint value-chain activities. Based on this joint work, Tata Motors plans to launch products in the Indian market, starting calendar year 2019.

Motherson Sumi Systems acquires Finland’s PKC Group for Euro 571 million Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd (MSSL) has acquired Finland based global auto component major PKC Group Plc for approximately Euro 571 million (Rs 4026 crore approx.)., a move that will help the Vivek Chaand Sehgal led group to expand its footprint significantly in American and European commercial vehicle market segment. This is the 16th acquisition by MSSL since 2002. A focused approach to product and market expansion has helped the company reach a turnover of USD 5.7 billion by FY15-16 and will help move forward towards the target of USD 18 billion along with business philosophy of 3CX15 meaning exposure to any country, component or customer should not be more than 15% of the company’s total turnover by FY 2020. As announced earlier on Jan 19, 2017, MSSL and PKC entered into a combination agreement pursuant to which MSSL launched a voluntary recommended public tender offer for the acquisition of all the issued and outstanding share capital and voting rights of PKC Group Plc (PKC). The tender offer was launched on Feb 6, 2017.
