Nine trees were decorated the first year, and reaction to this early effort was so favorable that the number of trees increased

First Footin’ At Rural Hill E

njoy the holiday’s pleasures a little too much? Stuffed to the gills from all those parties? Determined that this is the year to make a change for the better? Why not come out to Rural Hill and start 2014 off right with First Footin’ our annual walk and celebration of Hogmanay, or Scottish New Years?

The Tradition Following the Protestant Reformation in Scotland in the latter half of the sixteenth century, it was considered irreverent to celebrate dates of religious importance. Thus, merriment and celebrations were reserved for Hogmanay (pronounced Hog-muh-nay,) this important part of the year combined both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day with a celebration of good will and good fortune. The use of the term “first footin’,” according to legend, is as follows: Fortune would smile on the household if the first person to set foot in the doorway on the New Year was a young man; presumably tall, handsome, healthy, dark haired, dark eyed, and bearing gifts (such as a lump of coal for the fire.) Today it does no harm if the first footer carries a bottle of his best and favorite beverage to offer his host a drink and a toast, stating “Lang may your lum reek.” This traditional Scottish salutation wishes its recipient long life and prosperity. It literally means “long may your chimney smoke.” Several towns throughout the hillsides of Scotland continue an age old annual ritual of walking the town limits Historic Rural Hill to restate or reclaim the boundaries of the 4431 Neck Road township.

Huntersville, N. C. 28078 www.ruralhill.net

These traditions have been adopted as part of the Rural Hill Hogmanay (Scottish New Year)

Destinations for Holiday Wonders Winston-Salem

Itinerary toppers: On the Winston side of the hyphen, Reynolda House Museum of American Art makes an elegant holiday statement. On the Salem side, the season’s soulful dimension resounds along the cobblestone streets of the Old Salem historic district. Candlelight tours and music soften the contrast between tobacco magnate R.J. Reynolds’ sweeping 60-room bungalow, where an Aeolian pipe organ rings out, and the handsome structures of Salem, where a 1800 Tannenberg organ symbolizes the importance of music to the Moravians. The Candle Tea and the Lovefeast at historic St. Philips African Moravian Church move the spirit. And more: The performance calendar includes the University of North Carolina School of the Arts’ acclaimed “Nutcracker” plus the North Carolina Black Repertory Company’s “Black Nativity.” Uncommon gifts can be found at Reynolda Village and the shops at Old Salem — sugar cake and paper-thin Moravian cookies from Winkler Bakery top the list.

Concord Itinerary toppers: Speedway Christmas might be hard to resist if only for the chance to drive on Charlotte Motor Speedway’s quad oval. This year’s newly designed course stretches 3.1 miles with more than 3 million lights plus holiday movies screened on America’s largest HDTV. At the infield Christmas Village, visitors can take in the Bethlehem Village with live actors and animals, a petting zoo, games and activities in Santa’s Workshop.

McAdenville and Belmont Itinerary toppers: If the best things come in small packages, McAdenville makes a heck of a gift. With a population of less than 700, this town west of Charlotte wraps itself in lights to become Christmas Town USA, with virtually all of its 1.5 square miles glowing for thousands of visitors in a tradition that began in 1956. Eight miles away, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in Belmont reflects the season with a festive display of Christmas

trees, including a 16-foot tall “tree” made with 300 live orchids, a garden specialty. Crafts, Santa visits and other activities complete the experience. And more: The planetarium at the Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia illuminates the Yule log, menorah, Christmas tree lights and other holiday customs in its “Season of Light” program. Horse-drawn carriage rides, music, stories and a live Nativity inspire a Christmas visit to the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte.

Blowing Rock Itinerary toppers: With its strollable streets and nifty shops, Blowing Rock has earned acclaim as one of America’s prettiest winter towns. It’s also an ideal destination for travelers who want to take home an evergreen. This is the heart of Christmas tree country, where choose-and-cut farms specialize in the native Fraser fir. With hayrides and other family activities, farms turn shopping into a full-blown event, and many of them partner with area inns on lodging packages. “A

Golden Christmas” at Reed Gold Mine. The event will take place on Saturday, December 7th from 10am - 4pm and will feature choirs, music, crafts, and tours describing Christmas traditions. Admission is free, and open to the public. Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. From this discovery, gold mining spread gradually to nearby counties and eventually into other southern states. During its peak years gold mining was second only to farming in the number of North Carolinians it employed. The estimated value of gold recovered reached over one million dollars a year. North Carolina led the nation in gold production until 1848, when it was eclipsed by the great rush to California.

Deck The Halls Program Is Like A Treasure Map To Yadkin Valley Wineries Y

uletide festivities in the Yadkin Valley wine region are once again highlighted by the Deck the Halls holiday passport program. Folks participating in Deck the Halls receive a wine tasting, hand-crafted ornament, and winerelated recipe at 10 participating wineries. Additionally, there’s live music on weekends at various wineries, while each winery takes a turn serving its special recipe. This program spans the entire holiday season, now through Sunday, January 12. “It’s a fun way for people to celebrate the holiday season - a treasure map guiding them to the Surry Area Wineries,” says Louis Jeroslow, winemaker at Elkin Creek Vineyard. “Come enjoy the season by visiting wineries, seeing beautiful vineyards, and spending time with new friends met along the way.” This year’s participating wineries are: Brushy Mountain, Carolina Heritage, Elkin Creek, Grassy Creek, McRitchie, Olde Mill, Round Peak, Slightly Askew, Stony Knoll and Surry Oak.

purchasing a program passport, available at all 10 wineries. Passports may also be bought online at: www.SurryWineries.com. Passport prices are $60 per person or $95 per couple. In addition to tastings, ornaments, recipes and entertainment, the passports provide discounts at 15 other businesses in Surry County, including accommodations, restaurants and pubs, spas, and retail stores. “The feedback from past years is that people have really enjoyed the experience. They mention the hospitality and warm welcomes they receive,” Jeroslow says. “One of the wonderful things about the Yadkin Valley appellation is that it’s still very approachable and casual. You don’t have to be an aficionado to come taste the wines and enjoy the vineyards.” For info on Deck the Halls, call (877) 999-8390, or go to: www.SurryWineries.com.

et ready for a fresh take on the holidays’ most parodied song with a trip to Sylvan Heights Bird Park. Instead of parroting lyrics, you can scan the 18-acre park for swans a-swimming, geese a-laying and other birds chosen for a holiday scavenger hunt. Sylvan Heights is home to 170 species of waterfowl, many of them rare and endangered, from six continents, and the sight of a Scarlet Ibis alone turns a visit into a festive occasion. www.shwpark.com

eacocks, butterflies, deer and other enchanting creatures take up temporary residence at the Elizabethan Gardens. Created with flowers, seeds and other natural elements, the lighted displays join permanent art elements — which include the world’s largest bronze statue of Elizabeth I, who sponsored England’s first attempt to establish a permanent New World settlement on the island where these gardens honor her. www.elizabethangardens.org

inston-Salem acquired elements of its rich culture from the Moravians who settled there in the 18th century, and their holiday traditions make Old Salem Museum and Gardens an ideal place for distilling the holiday spirit. Visitors can create special memories on candlelight tours, hear holiday music or attend the Moravian Candle Tea, presented by the Home Moravian Church. Stop by Winkler Bakery, where Home Moravian Church - John Dyer Moravian sugar cookies and cakes are baked in a wood-burning oven — just as they were in the old days. www.oldsalem.org

Film Junkies Guide to North Carolina Western Mountain Locations Blue Ridge Parkway Half of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s 469 miles are in western North Carolina.

I

t’s not nicknamed “America’s favorite drive” for nothing. Its scenery, wildlife, recreational opportunities, folk history, and crafts make the Blue Ridge Parkway one of the most visited attractions in the National Park System. A WPA project from the 1930s, the parkway has drawn a number of documentary filmmakers over the years, and countless commercials have also filmed here. The UNC-TV documentary “Blue Ridge Parkway: America’s Grand Balcony” captures the mountain vistas, the farmsteads, the amazing varieties of flora and fauna, the music, the culture, and the oral history of the region. Aerial shots of the real Cold Mountain appear in the film version of Charles Frazier’s bestseller, though most of it was shot in Romania. The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation sponsors the Banff Film Festival World Tour, held each spring at colleges in Boone, Brevard, High Point, and Winston-Salem.

Continued From Page 12 celebration, known simply as “First Footin’”. Traditionally, the fulfillments of Hogmanay’s rituals and folklore have assured good crops, good health, and good fortune in the coming year.

The Walk This will be a vigorous walk around the farm’s 2.25 mile trail, event, and historic sites, stopping along the way to discuss history and folklore. If you do not think you are physically able to do the walk, please come anyway. It’s a great time for fellowship at the new Historic Rural Hill Cultural Center, which will be open for this occasion. This event is FREE, but we do encourage everyone to bring something for the luncheon. (Remember, its bad luck to show up empty handed)
