Honda’s New Civic Tourer to Make Public Debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show Honda’s new British built Civic Tourer will be making its first public appearance at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show alongside the refreshed Civic hatchback. In addition to these two debuts, Honda will showcase a selection of modern and historic racing machines alongside its ultimate sportscar, the NSX Concept, highlighting Honda’s racing DNA and sporty heritage.

Civic Tourer & Refreshed Civic hatchback Developed and designed in Europe, the new Civic Tourer features a sleek and sophisticated exterior combined with class leading interior space. This new model will be built at Honda’s UK manufacturing factory in Swindon alongside the Civic hatchback variant, Jazz and CR-V and is set to be launched in early 2014. Alongside this new addition to the Civic family, Honda is further strengthening the Civic range with a refreshed hatchback model. The Civic will feature exterior and interior design refinements and will also be displayed for the first time at Frankfurt Motor Show. Honda NSX Concept II This concept, first shown in Europe at the Geneva Motor Show earlier in the year, suggests a potential direction for the next-generation NSX’s interior design. The NSX will act as the halo of the Earth Dreams Technology series, embodying Honda’s philosophy of balancing dynamic performance with environmental efficiency. McLaren Honda MP4/4 Heritage F1 Car Powered by a 1500cc V6 twin-turbo engine, this iconic

machine dominated the 1988 F1 series, winning 15 of 16 GPs. It set the record for the number of GP wins in a season and won both the Constructor’s and Driver’s championships. Honda will return to F1 in 2015 under a joint project with McLaren. Honda WTCC Car Honda is competing in the 2013 FIA World Touring Car Championship with drivers Gabriele Tarquini and Tiago Monteiro and Honda will be displaying the 2013 car at Frankfurt 2013. The Civic WTCC car utilises the HR412E engine, a completely bespoke 1.6 litre 4 cylinder direct injection turbo-charged petrol engine, fully conforming to FIA regulations for the WTCC. Honda will also display the RC213V Race Motorcycle that is currently running in the Moto GP for the Repsol Honda team, further demonstrating Honda’s passion and pedigree in the world of Motorsport.

The Subaru is shaking off its image as a ‘boy racer’ classic. According to analysis by MoneySupermarket, drivers of the Japanese brand are the least likely to make a claim for an ‘at fault’ accident on their car insurance. The UK’s number one comparison site analysed over 13 million car insurance quotes run on the site over 12 months, and of the nation’s top 35 favourite car brands it found Subaru drivers make the fewest number of claims for motor accidents, followed by Smart Car and Fiat drivers. In fact, Subaru drivers are less likely to be younger drivers, and more likely to be in their thirties and forties and insuring the popular Impreza model. With lower claims rates than other models this indicates that Impreza owners are in fact careful about looking after their prized wheels. Peter Harrison, car insurance expert at MoneySupermarket, said: “A turn up for the motoring books! The Subaru is shedding its image of a car for pure petrol heads, and is actually being driven by older, safer drivers instead of the ‘drive it like they stole it’ younger motoring generation. “Interestingly though, the fact that Subaru drivers are least likely to make a claim, doesn’t directly translate into them paying the cheapest premiums. While claims are one factor insurers take into account when setting premium prices, other factors also play a part. These include the engine size, the number of miles you clock up, where you park, and your profession amongst other things. Smaller cars are generally cheaper to insure as the cost of repairs and parts are likely to be lower than those on more premium models. If you want to pay less for car insurance, it is worth considering these factors when choosing your motor as this will help reduce the overall cost of running a car.” Neil Greig, director of policy at The Institute of Advanced Motorists, said: “Noisy hatchbacks done up in dubious taste might not be easy on the eye but they are often looked after with tender love and care by their doting owners. From Audi to Volvo the best drivers take care of their driving and their cars because they know crashes will cost them in terms of higher premiums and ultimately second hand value.” The Fiat Cinquecento - despite being immortalised by hapless teenage driver Simon Cooper in The Inbetweeners is the individual car model least likely to claimed for.

The research also unearthed the nation’s claims calamities. Analysis of car brands reveals drivers of the Spanish made Seat, Korean built Kia and British produced Mini take the top spots for most likely to make a claim for an ‘at fault’ motor accident. Also featuring in the top five are drivers behind the wheel of other Japanese brands Honda and Mazda. Pete Harrison continued: “Being involved in a motor accident, however severe and whether you are at fault or not, can be a very traumatic and costly experience. Claiming for either an ‘at fault’ or ‘not at fault’ accident will have an impact on the cost of your car insurance premiums. Our research shows the average claim value for an ‘at fault’ accident is £3,025, and these types of claims represent more than half of all those registered on the site.

“Even if an accident isn’t your fault, and you make a claim on another driver’s insurance policy, your own premiums can still go up. All accidents you are involved in must be reported to your insurer, whether or not they were caused by you. If you’ve recently been involved in an accident, your provider will assess you as being more likely to be in an accident in the future and will push up your premiums at renewal, making it essential to shop around for a better deal at renewal time.”

“Whether you own a Subaru or a Seat, it is worth remembering that car insurance prices vary considerably, so it is important to shop around and get the best deal that meets your requirement.” Accident claims hotspots Further analysis of the data reveals where in the UK the most accidents take place.3 The Watford area leads the charge, closely followed by commuter town Hemel Hempstead, Chelmsford, St Albans and Enfield named as being hotspots for accident claims. Drivers in urban areas Hull and East London make the fewest claims, as do drivers in Welsh community Llandrindod Wells, Cornish City Truro, and Scottish town Falkirk. Pete Harrison concluded: “Living in a commuter town like Watford or Hemel Hempstead will have an impact on the level of the car insurance premium you will pay. Heavily congested areas, particularly around key commuter routes such as Greater London mean statistically you are more likely to make a claim. Regardless of whether motorists are making the most of an open motorway, or are bumper to bumper on the daily commute, they should always be vigilant of their own driving and that of those around them.

DVLA Reveal The Top 10 Excuses For Not Buying A Tax Disc A motorist who claimed to have taken so much Viagra he could not leave the house was just one of a number of excuses from people who failed to tax their car. According to information released by DVLA, motorists caught for not having a tax disc last year used a variety of excuses, which included “My mate said that if the cost of the tax is more than what the car’s worth you haven’t got to pay it.” One motorist claimed to have fallen out of a tree while fruit picking and broke both arms so they could not fill in the necessary forms, while one motorist even blamed their mobile phone. Carolyn Williams, DVLA’s Head of Digital Services, said: “The vast majority of people tax their car on time but it amazes me to see the excuses people come up with. It is easier than ever before for people to tax their car and our digital services are designed to be used any time of day or night to fit in with people’s lifestyles - so there really is no need for silly excuses.”

Mobiles driving motorists to distraction Mobile phones are now such a part of our lives that for most of us theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re the last thing we see at night and the first thing we look at in the morning. Our addictive relationship with the gadget has grown in proportion to the apps we rely on to direct our daily lives - not all of which are to our benefit. The dangers of using a mobile while driving are well documented and do attract a ÂŁ60 fine, three penalty points and higher insurance premiums. Yet new research reveals that despite the practice being illegal since 2003, three quarters of British drivers see others using mobile phones on some or most journeys, while a quarter spot drivers using their mobile on every trip. And itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just talking thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the problem - some drivers are texting, emailing, Tweeting, updating their social networks or taking photographs on the move. The AA/Populus poll of nearly 21,000 drivers found 42 per cent say they used a hand-held phone in the car even though nearly two thirds admitted it distracted them from driving. Some 20 per cent confessed to texting behind the steering wheel, four per cent admit to checking emails and two per cent have sent emails or read Twitter or Facebook updates on the move. Another worrying and morbid development is the advent of digital rubber neckers - drivers who feel the need to use their phones to film or photograph serious crashes on the motorway, says the motoring organisation. In one incident on the M1 in Northamptonshire, police recorded

80 drivers using their phones or cameras to photograph emergency services carry out a four and a half hour rescue of a woman trapped in her crashed truck. The seriously injured driver was eventually flown by air ambulance to hospital and survived the crash. The police have contacted most of the drivers to warn them about their illegal and irresponsible behaviour but have not brought any prosecutions. Edmund King, AA president, says: Drivers need to concentrate on driving rather than be distracted by their digital technology. Our research shows that some drivers are now using their smart phones for more than talking on the move. It is really not smart to talk, text or tweet on the move. Digital rubber neckers who photograph crashes really are morbid voyeurs who should be concentrating on the road not the victims of crashes. It beggars belief that these macabre motorists should put their lives and others at risk through their lust for twisted metal. We would like to see the police target more mobile phone abusers so that the message gets out that it is not worth hanging on the telephone while driving. However, we have seen a 29% reduction in traffic police in the last decade so their resources are stretched. Road safety charity Brakeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campaign urging drivers to put their phones out of sight and out of mind while driving warns that using a phone behind the wheel can lengthen reaction times to a similar extent to drink driving, significantly increasing the risk of crashing. The charity says unlike other types of deadly risk-taking, men and women - young and old - are almost equally guilty of using their phone behind the wheel, showing widespread misunderstanding

of the dangers. Julie Townsend, Brake deputy chief executive, says: Use a phone while driving and you are taking a horrendous risk with your own life and the lives of others. Many drivers who wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t dream of drink-driving are using phones while driving, oblivious that the effect on your reaction times can be similar. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re urging people to drive smart, recognising that phone use at the wheel can and does destroy lives, and no call or text is ever that important. If you need to use your phone urgently, pull over somewhere safe first: itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s as simple as that. We are also calling on the government to do more to tackle phone use at the wheel, including banning hands-free phones and bringing in far stiffer penalties.

Campersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Guide to Carbon Monoxide Safety Often dubbed the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;silent killerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, because of its tasteless, odourless, colourless emissions, carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning kills an average of 15 people each year according to Health and Safety Executive (HSE) government statistics. Holidaymakers heading off to caravan and campsites across the UK are particularly susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning, as fuel powered camping equipment can give off the undetectable toxic fumes. So if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re thinking of taking a camping holiday this year but are clueless about carbon monoxide here are some tips to help you and your family stay safe on the campsite this summer.

A warm, smouldering barbecue will give off poisonous CO, which can kill quickly and without warning, as it has no smell or taste. Never place a lit barbecue near the sleeping area outside your tent. Ensure your caravan has a carbon monoxide alarm. Never use a fuel-burning appliance to heat your tent or awning. Gas and kerosene heaters - unless they are permanently fitted in a caravan or motorhome - should only be used outside. Stoves and barbecues are designed for cooking not space heating. Never run a gas, petrol or diesel-powered generator inside a caravan, motorhome, tent or awning. Ensure tents, campers, motorhomes, caravans, awnings and any other enclosed areas are adequately

Camping in cold weather is especially dangerous for CO poisoning because there is a frequent need for heating units and a strong tendency to stay inside due to the weather. Choosing other alternatives like electrical or batteryoperated models is highly recommended As well as staying safe while camping, it is also important to recognise the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning so you can act fast if needed. The early symptoms of poisoning are similar to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;fluâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, here are the critical signs to look out for. Symptoms of Carbon monoxide poisoning: Nausea, dizziness, tiredness, headaches, stomach pains, chest pains If you experience these symptoms, but feel better when you are outside or away from the appliance, you could be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. More severe symptoms are respiratory problems and brain damage leading potentially to death. If you think you are suffering from CO poisoning get fresh air immediately and call the emergency services. When you buy a CO alarm, make sure it meets current British and European safety standards. Look for alarms marked with the name of the European Standard â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;BSEN 50291:2001â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and with the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;CEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; mark, which should be found on the packaging. If you are concerned about the threat of CO poisoning whilst on holiday in the UK or abroad, you can take a battery-operated carbon monoxide alarm with you.
