DAN TRENT Dan Trent is a freelance motoring journalist and editor. He wrote our inspiring cover story on Mission Motorsport having previously competed in one of the charity's races alongside wounded soldiers.

By day Samarth is a staff writer for Motor Sport magazine; by night he is a secret NASCAR fan. For this issue we sent him to Bradford to meet one of the volunteer rescue crews and their modified vehicle.

Editor’s letter Our cover story on Mission Motorsport nearly fell victim to the snow storm that hit the country at the end of February. The charity helps injured service personnel by using motor sport to give them renewed confidence. It was due to celebrate its sixth anniversary at Goodwood just as the storm hit. The event was called off, but many participants still turned up: it takes more than snow to deter these men and women. Determination and making the most of your situation can be seen as something of a theme in this issue. On page 32 we talk with Greg Symes of the MSA Academy, who has authored ground-breaking research into how young drivers can best develop their skills. And on page 44, Tony Jardine documents taking part in a gruelling rally which took him the length of the country. Motor sport is rarely easy, but then that’s what makes it so satisfying. Finally, apologies to the CSCC for publishing the wrong web address in the last issue’s Club Focus. You can find them at www.classicsportscarclub.co.uk. Joe Dunn, Editor Twitter: @joedunn90

What: Who: When:

Safari Rally, Kenya Richard Burns and Robert Reid February 25-27, 2000

Dust, speed and the subtle colours of a magical landscape: Richard Burns and Robert Reid head for victory on the 2000 Safari Rally, aboard their Subaru Impreza WRC. The event lost its WRC status after 2002, when Colin McRae/Nicky Grist won for Ford, and hasn’t reappeared on the schedule since. Recently, however, FIA president Jean Todt – formerly a leading rally co-driver – has been talking to the Kenyan authorities about restoring the event to the world stage, possibly from 2020.

News WALES GREEN LIGHTS CLOSED ROADS New laws passed following long campaign In a landmark development for Welsh motor sport, new laws facilitating closed-road events have come into force following a long campaign by the MSA and the motor sport community. The MSA spent several years campaigning for a change in the law to allow local authorities to suspend the Road Traffic Act for authorised motor sport events. New legislation enabling that commenced in England on April 10 2017 and, following a further consultation, the Welsh Government

has now published its own statutory instrument facilitating closed-road events in Wales. WRC driver and MSA Team UK graduate Elfyn Evans welcomed the news as a huge boost for motor sport in his home country. “Wales has some of the best driving roads in Europe and this initiative will provide the perfect platform to showcase the very best of the Welsh countryside,” he said. “Welsh motor sport is very much on the up and this will only encourage even more visitors to our region.”

GB WELCOMES CLOSED ROADS Organisers of the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB have hinted that this year’s event (October 4-7) may feature closed-road elements. The MSA’s event-organising subsidiary, International Motor Sports (IMS), said that it would explore fresh opportunities in the wake of new Welsh closed-road legislation. “We are already looking at what this might mean for this year’s event,” said Ben Taylor, Managing Director of IMS. “Whether it’s the introduction of an entire special stage set on closed roads or just closing a small section of highway to link two existing forest tests, we will be considering all the options. It’s really exciting!” The route will be announced on 25 April when tickets go on sale. Follow @WalesRallyGB on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

Winners at the MSA Night of Champions were joined by FIA President Jean Todt and Deputy President (Sport) Graham Stoker

TODT & STOKER CROWN BRITISH CHAMPIONS The FIA’s President Jean Todt and Deputy President (Sport) Graham Stoker crowned the 2017 MSA British Champions during its annual Night of Champions ceremony held in London (January 27). Alan Gow, MSA Chairman from 2006-2017, hosted the winners of UK motor sport’s most prestigious titles at the Royal Automobile Club. They were joined by special award winners,

each recognised for an outstanding achievement. Master of Ceremonies Steve Rider was accompanied by colleague Louise Goodman. “The Night of Champions is our chance to celebrate those who have excelled in their chosen discipline to win the premier titles in UK motor sport: the MSA British Championships,” said Gow. “It also presents a great opportunity to

recognise some of the outstanding, but perhaps largely unseen, achievements by members of the British motor sport community who give their time to enable this great sport to take place.”

Details of all award winners can be found at msauk.org/assets/ champions2018.pdf.

WALKER & WILLIAMS RECOGNISED FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT Formula One greats Sir Frank Williams and Murray Walker OBE have received MSA Lifetime Achievement Awards, the highest honour bestowed by the MSA Board. Alan Gow, former MSA Chairman, presented the first accolade to Sir Frank at the Williams team’s F1 headquarters in Oxfordshire. “This award came out of the blue but I really

MSA CONFIRMS ATTENDANCE AT SPEEDMACHINE The MSA will introduce new people to grassroots motor sport by running an autoSOLO with free passenger rides at Speedmachine, the British round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at Silverstone on 25-27 May. Speedmachine is the first World RX event to be held at Silverstone and will combine the championship action with live music, manufacturer

test drives on the circuit, street food, Group B displays, e-gaming and more. The MSA is working with local motor clubs to add grassroots motor sport to the mix through the autoSOLO feature. In recent years, a similar initiative has given thousands of people their first taste of club motor sport at the Autosport International exhibition. “As an exciting and high-

VNUK UPDATE

Clubs are reminded that new data protection laws come into force on 25 May. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will replace the Data Protection Act 1998; since all motor clubs process personal data, they must comply with the new Regulation. The MSA has begun sending a weekly series of bulletins to MSA clubs with guidance on GDPR, including a template privacy notice. Further information is available from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at www.ico.org.uk.

The MSA has successfully applied for FIA grant funding on behalf of Dare To Be Different (D2BD), the campaign it co-founded with Susie Wolff (left). This will support the UK campaign and also expansion into Germany and Australia. Graham Stoker, FIA Deputy President for Sport, said: “D2BD has been a huge success in the UK, so we are pleased to be able to help with this funding through our FIA Sport Grant Programme.”

The MSA continues to engage with the Department for Transport (DfT) on Vnuk, a 2014 European Court judgement that would require all vehicles to have compulsory third party motor insurance. The MSA is encouraging the DfT to push for an amendment to the Motor Insurance Directive in Brussels to exclude motor sport. The MSA is also due to re-engage with the DfT regarding proposals to change UK law, also to exclude motor sport from any legislative changes.

TOP YOUNG TRIO PICKED FOR TEAM UK Young racers Ricky Collard and Callum Ilott have joined rallycross star Dan Rooke as new members of MSA Team UK, the pinnacle of the MSA Academy. All three have been part of the MSA Academy’s Squad programme, while Collard has also completed the threeyear AASE course run in conjunction with Loughborough College. Collard (21) competed in the 2017 ADAC GT Masters, winning his debut GT3 race. “Graduating to Team UK is the greatest honour,” he said. “I’m extremely excited about the future and look forward to learning the next steps needed to become a young professional.”

14 14_MSA News.indd 1

Ilott (19) finished fourth in the 2017 FIA F3 European Championship with six wins. “After joining the MSA Academy with the intention of reaching Team UK, I am very pleased to be selected as a member of the national squad,” he said. Rooke (20) won the 2016 MSA British Rallycross Championship in his debut year in the Supercar class and finished second in the 2017 RX2 International Rallycross Series. “I hope the programme will give me a more in depth understanding of what it takes to turn professional and to give me the skills to do so,” he said. British GT Championship successfully ran Sunoco CFR 102 octane as the control fuel in 2017

NEW FOR 2018 The MSA fuel regulations have aligned themselves with FIA fuel regulations. Previously the MSA regulations maximised the RON to 100 and the MON to 89. You can now run 102 RON, 90 MON and 3.7% oxygen fuels, in all MSA championships*, and use the same map whether you are racing in the UK or in Europe. We stock several FIA, and now MSA, conformant fuels for normally aspirated or turbo charged applications. View from the MSA

David Richards CBE

MSA chairman on his vision for UK motor sport

Diversity: British motor sport has a wealth of riches, but steps must be taken to safeguard its future prosperity

A

t its pinnacle, British motor sport is in great shape. Last year Lewis Hamilton achieved his fourth F1 championship title; Kris Meeke and our own MSA Academy graduate, Elfyn Evans, took three WRC wins between them; James Calado, another MSA Academy graduate, was crowned GT champion in the FIA World Endurance Championship; and in karting, Danny Keirle and Dexter Patterson won both the senior and junior world crowns. However, that in itself does not tell the full story of motor sport in the UK. In the past few years we are seeing some worrying trends in the health of our sport. In fact, over the last decade we’ve seen a drop of almost 10 per cent in MSA licence holders; that’s more than 3,000 fewer people participating in motor sport in the UK! This has contributed to a 15 per cent drop in entries so the warning signs are already there and cannot be ignored. What will motor sport look like in the future? Are the grass-roots enthusiasts being squeezed out? Will it shrink to a smaller and purely professional sport? Will it become the preserve of a wealthy elite, who can afford to use race tracks to drive in a safe, legal and controlled environment? Will performance cars only be built to be used on closed circuits? When I accepted the role of MSA chairman; it certainly wasn’t to be the honorary custodian of our UK governing body, dutifully passing the baton on after a few years at the

helm. No – I see my role as providing clear and decisive leadership against the backdrop of these crucial and challenging times with a very clear objective: to create a sustainable future for motor sport in the UK. Above all else, sustainability simply means ensuring our future and in order to achieve that I believe we need to address the following areas of concern. First, we need to identify the threats and risks to the sport, then establish plans to mitigate those risks. Secondly, we then need to chart a safe passage through the broader external influences, whether they are political, economic, social or the legal environment in which we operate. Finally, we must safeguard and improve the financial landscape of the MSA – for without the right financial resources we cannot promote the sport effectively, nor invest in the future. To achieve this, it is essential that we take on board a broad range of views, not just those formed by my own experiences, as a long-time participant and enthusiast, but everyone in the sport. We have already started to aggregate insight from across all our sporting disciplines, listening and seeking counsel from those whose years of experience and dedication in their specific categories is unsurpassed. This encompasses competitors, regulators, legislators and volunteer officials from across the motor sport spectrum. Our own motor sport industry is world-leading, having grown from a strong domestic motor sport scene, so we need to listen to their perspective. And, of course, the motor sport media in Britain is second to none – populated with talented journalists who have decades of experience and insight. I’m very confident that the feedback we receive will help to shape the future direction of the MSA and create a forward-looking plan that we can all embrace. n

Nineteen-year-old scrutineer on recruiting other young people

D

uring the Watkins Lecture at Autosport International in January, the new MSA Chairman David Richards delivered a speech on the future of the MSA and UK motor sport, with many of his points focusing on the need for new blood, more females, and a change in the current approach. As I sat listening to all his valid points, I looked around the room and realised of the hundreds of attendees at the lecture, I was one of the few who were below the age of 30. Even more noticeably, I was one of only a handful of women in the room that day. This led me to introduce myself to the room during the question and answer session, when I asked: if we need to get more young volunteers into motor sport, why not use those of us already involved to recruit them? When have youngsters ever listened to their elders? Take football; do we see the legends from the ’80s in schools encouraging students to get involved? No, instead we see the younger stars of today, who can generate a quick and easy rapport. Although this is a difficult concept to apply to officials’ roles in motor sport, it is something that needs to be considered. We need young ambassadors to represent the opportunities that come with officials’ roles, as this will allow us to change the ‘face’ of the sport.

“Personally, thanks to the amazing team of scrutineers I work beside I have been given endless opportunities” www.msauk.org / Spring 2018

MSA Volunteer GC TS.indd 1

The views expressed by the individual contributors are not necessarily those of the MSA.

Let’s take scrutineering as an example. I have worked on numerous events where competitors have arrived at scrutineering and greeted me with a surprised expression. With the lack of young officials, it is sometimes hard to decipher if their surprise is at my age, the fact I’m female, or both! How is it viable to run a sport where 75 per cent of officials are aged over 50? At the other end of the spectrum, Richards stated that of the 450 fully licensed scrutineers, just one per cent are under 25. However, if that one per cent worked together to share the enthusiasm and passion that we have for this sport with other under-25s, there’s no doubt in my mind that this number would rise. Some of you may think this is a job for Go Motorsport, but why couldn’t the MSA have a junior section, a group of young people working together to make a difference? If we attend schools, county shows or motor sport events, we can show people the opportunities these roles have given us and try to change their perspectives. Personally, thanks to the amazing team of scrutineers I work alongside, I have been given endless opportunities, all of which I mentioned when writing my personal statement for university. What better traits could I have written about than having hands-on experience in the sector I was applying to study – motor sport engineering? None of this is to say that older volunteers have no role to play in encouraging young people. However, maybe their efforts would be better spent on mentoring and developing new trainees once they have been encouraged to get involved by young ambassadors closer to their own age. Then one day, when the older generation moves on, there will be people with the knowledge and skills to step up and fill the void. n

Alexander Sims The GT driver on new types of racing

I

n the early days, like many other young drivers, I was foolish enough to think that being in Formula 1 was an actual possibility, and that I had a reasonable shot at it. But although I was lucky enough to drive single-seaters to a fairly high level, ultimately I wasn’t good enough to progress. When the money dried up, it became anything but a realistic proposition. I remember I thought, ‘hang on a second, why do I have this immovable dream of F1? Why don’t I take a step back and see how I can make a profession out of racing in the wider motor sport arena?’ I think there’s an unspoken expectation that Formula 1 is the only goal for young drivers, and that was certainly the case for me. I hadn’t considered all these other formulae that are fantastic and more satisfying to compete in than F1. GT racing is a great place to do that. Having worked with BMW for four years, I’m thoroughly pleased that I made the jump. Reassuringly, some drivers I speak to now are saying: ‘I’ve got my eyes set on GT racing, full stop,’ and they’re 18 years old. That’s great, but it certainly wasn’t the case for me.

“From a career viewpoint competing in Formula E is a nobrainer – it’s an exciting place to be, and there’s lots of money in it” www.msauk.org / Spring 2018

MSA Competitor GC TS.indd 1

I’ve also been involved with Andretti and BMW for the last couple of years in Formula E, and done a lot of testing with them. Formula E is so, so different to conventional types of motor sport in many different ways. The all-weather, treaded tyres are a massive factor. It’s pretty difficult, and the performance window is very narrow. Throw in regenerative braking, with carbon brakes, which stick because they’re not really worked hot enough due to the low speeds, and it becomes very challenging. I don’t think there’s any getting away from the fact that Formula E speeds are relatively slow compared to other top single-seater formulae, but I don’t think that’s a problem – it’s just where the series is at the moment. As technology improves, the speeds are only ever going to match GP2 or perhaps F3 levels, but the cars will become more exciting to drive. From a career point of view, competing in Formula E has got to be a no-brainer – it’s an exciting place to be, and there’s lots of money in it, to be honest. The thing with Formula E is that we can’t force people to like it and go and watch it because it is good for the environment. It needs to be exciting in its own right. And it is up to the teams and race organisers to come with cars and racing formats that do that. I think that will happen, but I am not convinced by the other futuristic racing that people are talking about. Autonomous racing is a very difficult concept to grasp. Roborace has tested before, but we haven’t seen an actual race, and, because there’s a lack of a human aspect, I’m not convinced that it will captivate people. There’s a lot of cool technology, but with so many things we can’t see happening under the bodywork, it’s a hard sell. n

oodwood in the snow is a wonderful sight. Unless you have a paddock full of supercars from McLaren F1s to Porsche GTs waiting to get out onto the track. But that is the situation Mission Motorsport found itself in in February. It had arranged access to the track to celebrate its sixth anniversary and had planned a series of hot laps for supporters and beneficiaries alike. Needless to say, that wasn’t going to happen. Mission Motorsport focuses on helping former servicemen and women put their lives back together after suffering injury or sickness as a result of their service. Its motto is ‘Race, Retrain, Recover’ but it could easily add ‘and never give up’. At Goodwood that military ‘can-do’ attitude was everywhere. No one was despondent that the planned celebrations had been put on ice. ❱❱

Instead, tea and sandwiches were wheeled out and the gathering turned into a big social event. James Cameron, a former major in the British Army, is the public face and founder of the charity. Known universally as Jim, he was unfazed by the snow. “A lot of people have had a far worse day than this,” he says, before explaining the genesis of the charity: “Mission Motorsport was set up by a group of guys who came back from Afghanistan and wanted to help people like them. Motor sport is unique in that there is no disabled category. You adapt the vehicle rather than the sport so disabled people [who may have been injured in combat] can compete on a level playing field. For people who may have lost personal freedom or sense of self that is an incredible feeling.” From its headquarters near Wantage, Mission Motorsport coordinates track days, stunt shows and events such as the Race of Remembrance, which takes place in Anglesey each November and includes a break for a service of remembrance. It also helps with training and qualifications for its beneficiaries, many of whom have found themselves out on their own. Mission Motorsport’s job is to give them a renewed sense of purpose and, at a practical level, the skills and contacts they need to find work in an industry hungry for their particular range of skills. “The simple premise is to help those leaving the military into careers in the automotive industry,” says Cameron. “And so far, we have helped 105 people do that.” Proof of how it works is embodied in the people who’ve benefited directly. People like South African-born Lionel O’Connor, a former infantryman who lost his left leg in an IED explosion in Iraq that killed two of his comrades. Discharged from the army in 2013, he has been with Mission Motorsport from its earliest days, becoming a mainstay of the stunt-driving team and now instructs beneficiaries himself. “When I first got involved I wasn’t doing much beyond drinking,” says Lionel. “Jim invited me along to a race he was doing at Brands Hatch and the next thing I was timing the driver changes and helping in the pits, so it was kind of in at the deep end! Jim asked me what I wanted to do and I said drifting and stunts – from there I haven’t looked back.” Last year he stepped up to racing, completing the ARDS course just two weeks before the Race of Remembrance. Lionel’s car was a Honda CR-V built specially for the race by Mission Motorsport, with the support of Honda’s Swindon facility and the Synchro race team based there. “For me the main part of the injury wasn’t physical, it was more the mental side,” says Lionel. “If you can just flick that switch in people it helps get them energised ❱❱

again.” It is experiences like this that help Mission Motorsport develop processes within the MSA and other bodies to help drivers like Lionel compete. Another beneficiary taking the step from the military into motor sport is Sophie Burt, a former corporal in the Royal Logistics Core who was medically discharged after a debilitating inner ear illness left her unable to work. It also meant the medical suspension of her road driving licence, but this hasn’t stopped her getting back behind the wheel as part of the Live Action Arena stunt team at Autosport International, working with Lionel and his team. “I used to do banger racing, and when I was stationed in Germany I bought a rally car I used for weekend events,” she says. “Motor sport has always been there, but the stunt driving really helped me to get my confidence back.” Suitably inspired she’s now returning the favour and using the organisational skills from her former career to help with Mission Motorsport events, something she’s hoping might become a full-time career having tasted that side of the sport by helping out at Caterham Academy races. “Because you’ve come from a military background you’ve still got that teamwork mentality,” she says. “It’s also nice to be able to give something back and see people at the events with smiles on the faces, knowing they’re having the same positive experience.” One of Mission Motorsport’s more spectacular recent achievements has brought together Superdry co-founder and committed GT driver James Holder with the Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations division, where several beneficiaries have turned placements into full-time jobs. In conjunction with the Invictus Games Foundation, Holder has set up the Invictus Games Racing team to field a pair of GT4-level Jaguar F-types built by SVO to compete ❱❱

Disabled drivers in motor sport Proof that drivers with very obvious physical impairments can still mix it at the sharp end of the grid is evident in the work Mission Motorsport has done with its veterans. Its experience in this field is considerable and now being used to help the MSA develop policies for race organisers and marshals, to help them accommodate those with additional needs and make sure they can compete safely and on a level playing field. Considerable progress in this area has already been established by the British Motor Sports Association for the Disabled (BMSAD), which was founded in 1987 with the express purpose of assisting those with a range of medical conditions successfully to gain race licences for all types of motor sport. Triple amputee David Butler was instrumental in helping the MSA develop assessment procedures to help drivers like him achieve their racing credentials and, since this was established in 1991, BMSAD says more than 200 drivers with a wide range of disabilities and other medical conditions have earned the right to compete. As high-profile cases like that of Alex Zanardi and – more recently – Billy Monger prove, motor sport has come a long way in accommodating disabled competitors with the drive and talent to compete at the very pinnacle of the sport. And charities like Mission Motorsport and BMSAD use their particular expertise in the field to help authorities like the MSA design suitable processes to open the door at every level.

One of those is Ben Norfolk, a former Chinook engineer whose medical discharge from the RAF for PTSD came through the day before he was to drive at the Race of Remembrance. For a first day on civvy street this was an important symbolic and practical step, the race providing the final signature required for his International C licence. “When we unveiled the car at Autosport International it was four deep with reporters and photographers,” says Ben. “From not really having seen any of that kind of media coverage before, it was a bit different to become the subject! It’s been phenomenal being catapulted from sprinting, getting my circuit licence and working up to my International C in what seems like no time. In the build-up it was all about getting those signatures rather than going for every gap, but racing against experienced drivers in a Lotus Elise at Brands was a bit of a baptism!” Ben will be sharing the number 22 Jaguar with professional driver and mentor Jason Wolfe for the first part of the season, before handing over to fellow beneficiary Basil Rawlinson. Rawlinson will be combining his racing with a full-time engineering job at Jaguar Land Rover in a further example of Mission Motorsport’s close ties with UK-based manufacturers and ability to equip

The charity’s job is to give people a target and provide support along the way. With that in place the grit that sustained them through their military careers can be put to good use in a whole new world, one where much can be gained from determination, loyalty and pride in a job well done. n

or decades, it has been accepted wisdom that a young driver aspiring to reach the highest echelons of single-seater motor racing needs to begin their career in karting, which goes largely unchallenged as the first rung on the ladder. Indeed, it is a method that has been producing star talents for decades. However, while this method is tried it is not necessarily tested; since nearly every racer follows it, how can we confirm its merits, or know what happens when talented athletes take a different approach? Now, the MSA has produced the first academic study for talent development in motor sport. This sought formally to acknowledge the benefits of karting, while investigating how budding single-seater racers can make the most of the discipline before graduating to cars – specifically F4, the FIA’s designated first port of call. Conducted by MSA Academy Manager Greg Symes, the 26,000-word, 89-page thesis is titled, ‘Maximising the transition between Karting and F4 Motor Racing’. It is the result of a Professional Masters in Elite Performance at the Institute of Coaching and Performance at the University of Central Lancashire, and has yielded results that Symes hopes can better condition young drivers as they bid to realise their full potential in the modern era. “While karting is certainly a sport in its own right, those on a career path tend to use it to learn their trade and hone their craft in preparation for cars,” says Symes. “It seemed to me that aspiring drivers were dedicating themselves to karting just because that’s what everyone else does and has always done. I felt it would be really interesting to ask why this is the norm, whether it really is the right approach and, if so, what more can be done to enhance karting’s offering as a training and development platform.” The programme of study took place over a two-year period, during which Symes spoke in detail with several team managers on a confidential basis. To expand the scope of his research, Symes also explored career progression in sectors outside motor sport, including other sports, the performing arts, the military and business.

“A lot of time was taken up by research and academic reading, looking at theories and practices that could apply to everything from sport to top-level business,” says Symes. “It’s about taking lots of views from different areas, both sporting and non-sporting, and understanding what the research can tell us about the transition between the various stages of a demanding career. Then it’s looking at what an individual needs to do to equip themselves for each of those transitions.” The world in which we live is changing at a rate of knots in terms of the availability of knowledge and information, and how that it is consumed and understood. Symes’s study has come at an opportune time, not only with this abundance of information but also with the advent of FIA F4 as part of a much clearer path of progression. “Five years ago, there was a less well defined route from karting to single-seater car racing, so FIA F4 made the study more focused,” says Symes. “I had to focus on a specific point of entry into single-seater racing and obviously the FIA intends for F4 to be the first step on the single-seater ladder, which is a philosophy to which the MSA subscribes.” From the in-depth analysis, Symes has been able to confirm that in principle karting offers a strong launchpad for career drivers. However, he has also reached three key recommendations that karters should follow to enhance their time in the discipline and prepare for the transition to F4. “First, they should align their experiences in karting to F4,” says Symes. “This means that the goal in karting shouldn’t just be to win every race, it should be to gain experiences that will prove beneficial in F4, whether it’s to do with racecraft development or working in a structured, professional sporting environment. “Secondly, they should make their experience about themselves, their skills and their learning. This is about understanding where they are now, where they want to go (FIA F4) and how to bridge that gap on a bespoke basis, as ultimately every driver is different. There should be no cookie-cutter approach.

“Thirdly, they should undertake outside education and preparation. Which is to say that if you can’t get what you need to bridge the gap in karting alone, you should seek it elsewhere. Research has shown that specialising early on can be a limiting factor, and a breadth of different structured experiences and learning in the formative years will pay dividends in the later stages of an athlete’s development. It’s about building a broad base of the pyramid and equipping the individual with a wider range of skills, with a view to increasing their agility.” A prime example of Symes’s findings surrounds testing and the way in which kart racers gain seat time away from race weekends. “A common experience for young karters is that their team will say they need to get as much seat time as possible,” he says. “That’s fine but unless it’s focused on specific areas of the driver’s development, with clearly defined objectives, what’s thumping around a kart track going to achieve? “It’s quite common if you’re competing in a kart championship to go and test at each track several times before the main events. But you don’t have that opportunity in junior single-seater racing, so why would you condition yourself to that pattern of behaviour in karting? You are becoming reliant on a method that will be pulled like a rug from under your feet when you make the transition to cars.” ❱❱

FIA F4 is the approved starting point for kart graduates – and requires a little lateral thought

works for you, not just in the way that worked for them.” “I totally agree,” says Harvey, who switched from karting to Formula BMW in 2009. “If I was going to start again with the transition from karting to car racing, I think having a qualified coach would have to be an essential part of the budget, particularly because a lot of championships now are so competitive that you need to maximise your own unique potential in every single area to stand out.” Symes is confident that his study, the first of its kind in the world, will inform the MSA’s future strategy for talent development and the continued success of British talent on the world stage. Meanwhile, he will continue to manage the MSA Academy to help aspiring stars of the future – not only in single-seaters but across motor sport – in line with the principles that he has uncovered during the course of his research. “The next step is to look at how we can implement the outcomes of the research from a practical point of view and certainly our findings will help shape the future philosophy of the MSA Academy,” says Symes. “This is an opportunity to lead the way in talent development and to keep Britain at the forefront of world motor sport, where it belongs.” n

Greg Symes would like to thank the MSA, Dave Collins and Andrew Cruickshank from Grey Matters UK, Robert Reid and all those who participated in the research.

JAKOB EBREY

Symes elaborates: “The higher you climb up the singleseater ladder, the less seat time you get and the more you need to be able to ‘switch it on’ quickly. Therefore, it could be that limiting your running in karting hurts outright results in karting but conditions you much better for the later stages of your career.” One leading racer who concurs is IndyCar star Jack Harvey. As a former MSA British Kart Champion and British F3 title winner, Harvey has experienced the journey that Symes has so carefully studied. “What’s normal and what works for you in karting isn’t necessarily what’s normal or what works in single-seaters,” says Harvey. “When you reach F2, for example, there’s hardly any testing. You can’t afford to become one of those people who can get up to speed but only after a few days lapping the same track endlessly. Of course, testing does help initially as you acclimatise to the dynamics of a car, which are very different to a kart, but if you’re used to testing in a targeted and efficient manner, you’ll be better placed to move up. The more agile you are, the better.” Symes also believes that embedding qualified coaches in kart teams would be of tremendous benefit to young drivers. “A coach is somebody who understands and is qualified in the science and art of coaching, not just somebody who has an impressive motor sport CV,” he says. “Having an MSA Level 2 accredited coach in the team can help to focus and support your development in a way that

n 1968, brothers David and Les Barraclough witnessed a horrifying saloon car series accident while marshalling an event at Croft Circuit. The driver succumbed to his injuries, and the pair felt helpless. Briefly. But rather than simply accepting that this was part and parcel of racing at the time, the brothers resolved to do something about it. Together they decided to set up a mobile rescue unit to attend motor sport accidents at the side of the track. The unit would have basic first aid and crucially the equipment needed to extricate a driver from the vehicle. The thinking was that with those two elements, vital help could be offered in the immediate aftermath of a crash and before an ambulance could arrive. Fellow Yorkshireman Peter Hanson, an F3 single-seater racer, gave the Barracloughs a used Ford Transit van in 1968 and they were up and running, attending as many races as they could. At the time it was a radical proposal. But today the Motor Sport Services Organisation is still going strong and this year will be proudly celebrating its 50th anniversary. Now it’s Paul and Karl Barraclough, Les’ son and grandson, respectively, who run the MSSO, carrying on their father and uncle’s work in supporting safety for drivers and riders across the country. “My father’s rescue unit became the first one in the UK. It sparked a lot of other people wanting to do the same,” explains Paul. “Before we came along, they would drive a crash victim to the hospital and hope for the best; that was it. Les and David started a combined service to extricate and care for the drivers in their state-of-the-art Transit. “They got a lot of press back in 1968, when my father began his rescue unit. Louis Stanley, the chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association and chairman of the BRM team, wanted them to run his revolutionary medical mobile operation theatre [officially known as the International Grand Prix Medical Service] that travelled across the world and attended all the circuits.” Along with Sir Jackie Stewart, Stanley would become a catalyst for F1’s safety advances in the late 1960s and early ’70s, but the Barracloughs had work to do on home soil

first and declined to join the F1 circus. “The equipment in 1969 wasn’t sufficient, not even in international racing. The clerk of the course was equipped with basic cutting equipment, a grappling hook and some fire extinguishers. How are you going to even get anybody out of the car if they crash?” asks Paul. By contrast, the Transit included extrication equipment and all the latest medical mod-cons and was an effective first step for track-side medical treatment. “Racing came on board with safety precautions in the early 1970s,” continues Paul. “It didn’t happen overnight, but I guess it was because Grand Prix drivers were getting killed, and it was shown on television. Jackie Stewart also said that the facilities weren’t good enough. And here we were, screaming at everyone,‘We’ve got the equipment!’” The Bradford-based MSSO attends 60 events per year – including rallies, autocross and drag races – from Brighton to Inverness, but it’s not alone. Clubs such as the BRSCC, BARC, 750MC and others use their own units at circuits, but there are around 40 other rescue units, such as Calder Rescue, run by Richard Ashton. He says that because all crews are volunteers they share a sense of fraternity. “We’re volunteers. We cover our expenses as much as possible, but it doesn’t add up. It costs £6000 a year just to keep the vans mobile. But we all work together, us, MSSO, other units. We’re brothers in arms, in a sense.” The MSA licences rescue, stage safety and recovery units every year, with its own set of conditions which make sure that the compulsory equipment – of which a large list is provided by the MSA – is stored cleanly and tidily. These units are inspected at least once every three years thereafter, to make sure that they carry all of the up-to-date equipment. Depending on the discipline, the crew consists of two or three fully licenced crew members and a doctor, or an MSA-registered paramedic. All emergency crew members have to attend at least two training sessions a year with an MSA-registered trainer. Since Les passed away in 2009, Karl has taken the reins of the MSSO with his own experience as an ambulance driver, working with his wife and other volunteers at ❱❱

Racing rescuers

Meet the team Charley Webber, Chairman of the MSA Rescue and Recovery Panel Nine times out of 10 the first people on the scene of an incident will be either spectators or other competitors. But we aim to be second. I think of our crews as like an ambulance and fire service rolled into one in that we are there to provide rescue and medical services. Any form of motor sport which is governed by the MSA must have at least one rescue vehicle in attendance and some multi-stage rallies, for example, can have up to eight. Getting to the scene depends on the type of event. At a circuit we have a response time of 90 seconds, but on a rally it will be longer. We are usually stationed at the start line of a stage so to get to an incident we have to drive the same route as the rally cars and it might be 20 miles away. We are all volunteers and we cover most of the costs ourselves. However, the MSA is very good at helping with costs: you apply for funding for specific costs and they have a fund which is there to help. We also rely on donations from events. It is a great thing to be involved in but it does take a certain type of person. You need to be into motor sport for a start – that way you can see being part of a crew as a way to indulge your hobby. Most crews are associated with local motor clubs so if you want to get involved, the best thing to do is to contact your club. Or you can contact the MSA directly. I wouldn’t say that it is an easy job to do, but it is a very rewarding one and it is one of the best way of being involved in motor sport.

42 Rescue Crews GC.indd 5

Today Paul (top right) and Karl continue Les and David Barraclough’s pioneer work

weekends – he runs a café and works during weekdays. “I don’t have time to myself, not a day off, really,” says Karl, when we visit him in Bradford. “I joined my dad at tracks when I was six months old. I’ve always loved motor sport, I’ve just grown up with it.” The Barracloughs now use two Ford Super Duty Ambulances – the sort usually seen in American crime dramas – which they keep in a yard a short drive from their house because it’s too big to fit on their driveway. “This ambulance we found from a company down in London,” explains Paul. “I was trawling through the internet, sent them an email and here it is on our drive. Very well built. It’s 20 years old, and we think it’s from a warm place because there’s no rot or rust on it. “We’ll replace it when we get bored with it, but we’d struggle to get anything better. It’s fit for purpose. Everything inside is clean, and all the cutting equipment is kept in lockers outside. When you’re inside, it’s like a little operating theatre. It’s probably a little bit bigger than a normal ambulance but we need space, and all the paramedics that come out with us say it’s ideal.” The hulking ambulance, an imposing, reassuring presence in bright red with the MSSO logo on the side, is unexpectedly roomy inside, with space for a bed and a staggering amount of life-saving equipment and monitoring devices. On the outside, lockers carry the heavy-duty tools that the MSSO uses for safely extricating drivers from cars, such as powered cutters and spreaders – the ‘jaws of life’. “We’ve just invested in updated stuff, battery-operated equipment to extricate drivers. The latest things… It cost thousands. We’ve always carried more equipment than needed, and earlier than it’s been compulsory,” says Paul. “The ambulance is private, but if we’re out seeing an accident at the side of the road, we’ll stop. We have to. If you’re walking down the road and you saw someone on the floor you’d stop to help them. We have a duty of care.” Like many people involved in motor sport, from marshals to scrutineers, the fact that working with a rescue crew is voluntary is one of the attractions. It means that like-minded people are drawn to it and it breeds an esprit de corps. It is still nice to feel appreciated though. “Some drivers show their appreciation but they mostly think that it’s not going to happen to them,” says Karl. “What’s frustrating is that people still think we get paid for this. But we love what we do, and we’ve been doing it for so long, so hopefully we can keep going.” With 50 years under their belts, I ask the Barraclough pair whether they were fazed by those accidents that they’ve witnessed. With a true, nonplussed, Yorkshireman response, Karl replies: “We just get on with it, don’t we.” Paul nods, approvingly. Les and David would be proud. n

Running

Le Jog A road rally running the length of Britain is a great way to experience the thrill of classic motoring, as Tony Jardine found out

tested to their limits, but when the snow and ice descend – as they did along most of the route in December 2017 – it’s the ultimate test of nerve and talent for the drivers, too! I admit I was a bit cynical about keeping to average speeds then performing agility tests as fast as possible over private land, but it is such a tough task when you try to keep pace that when you do hit a control on time you feel elated! Likewise if you set a quick time around a tough test it is so satisfying; your car control and judgement have been sorely tested. You can imagine trying to keep pace over snow-laden

roads and ice-layered passes when you don’t know where the next timing point is… As my patient navigator, Nick Cooper, kept saying: “Try to keep up, Jardine!” With classes of cars from the 1920s to the 1980s, there are Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at stake for the successful crews, but traversing the remote uplands from the west country and Wales to the Pennines and Scotland can be demanding. Through sheer enthusiasm and Nick’s great navigation we achieved bronze medals and a class win as Rookie Le Jogists! It’s a motor sport adventure that you can be involved ❱❱

with at so many levels. Even the car doesn’t have to be a full-spec Porsche 911 or Lancia Fulvia, as proved by Richard Isherwood in his 1985 medalwinning Nissan Stanza, and husband and wife team Robert and Susan McClean in their 1962 multimedal-winning Rover P4 100. Classes and fun for all. Our 1972 BMW 1602, supplied through HERO’s Arrive and Drive scheme which allows people to experience classic motoring without the cost of owning a car, was quick enough and never missed a beat. But speed alone is not of the essence in this trial of reliability and endurance. Take the venerable 1959 Beetle of John and Robert Kiff, running consistently for 1500 miles to a class win. The demanding route, with regularity and speed tests set by Clerk of the Course and competitions chief at HERO, Guy Woodcock, was stunning. Right from the start we were slithering around the Land’s End headland on a private road, while the sheer scale and grandeur of the icy Yorkshire moors was both daunting and beautiful in equal measure. A genteel road section around the edge of scenic Loch Lomond spread calm before the ‘Monster Loch Ness’; end-to-end regularities providing a sting in the tail; and the incentive being the glorious John o’ Groats finish line later in the day. Many had helped each other get there. The camaraderie has to be seen to be believed. That spirit continued as we were invited by our Scottish hosts to sample a variety of malts at the superb Le Jog prize giving in Wick, accompanied by pipers and nourished by haggis. Competitors from 15 different nations soaked it all up. From as far as Australia, USA and right across Europe, the competitors were full of bonhomie. In fact, such was the ❱❱

Historic rallying is booming, with events at all levels The last decade has been one of tremendous growth across historic motor sport and the broad church of historic rallying has grown as quickly as any sector, writes Paul Lawrence. Classic car ownership is booming and many owners want to do a little more than polish their treasured classic. The wide range of road-based events offers an array of rallies, while historic special stage rallying caters for those who seek the thrill of full-on speed. There really is something to suit all tastes, budgets and aspirations. Whether you want to potter along country lanes in a bog-standard Morris Minor or blast through forest special stages in a full-house Group 4 Ford Escort Mk2, historic rallying has something to offer. At the very simple end of the market are scenic tours. Get a group of classic car buffs together, give them a set route in the countryside, a lunch halt and a finish and you have a scenic tour. There is no element of competition: it is simply about enjoying an old car in the company of like-minded individuals. No licences, no safety gear and no timing make this the easiest way of dipping a toe in the water, and the whole day shouldn’t cost more than £100. Stepping up a gear are historic road rallies, which are generally oneday events that incorporate competition. Cars need to have a modest degree of rally preparation and the crews need competition licences, although novices should get along just fine. The action is based around timed special tests on private land and regularity sections on the public road, where the aim is to maintain a predetermined average speed. Costs for such an event are probably in the £200 to £250 region. For those who want more challenge and adventure from their classic car, multi-day events in the UK and Europe up the ante considerably and bring in a far greater challenge for both crew members along with an element of endurance as the action continues into darkness. As well as Le Jog, the other stand-out UK event is the Rally of the

spirit of cooperation the EU could well consider conducting Brexit negotiations in Wick, Scotland, rather than Brussels. We were all in accord! I urge you to consider an involvement. Check out the HERO Summer Trial, which is designed to encourage new people to get involved in classic road rallying (www.heroevents.com). Or the Historic Rally Car Register (www.hrcr.co.uk), who run the Clubman’s Rally Championship. Motor clubs play an active role – top club

Tests, which re-creates the RAC Rallies of the 1950s before the rally moved to special stages on forest roads. Events of this scale ideally require a better prepared car and a crew with some experience, with costs running into four figures. Meanwhile, for those who really seek the adventure of a lifetime, events like the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge offer a month-long adventure across amazing landscapes. This is the top of the tree in terms of cost, challenge and time away and five-figure budgets need to be committed. Then there is historic special stage rallying, which is firmly back on the up in 2018 after a couple of difficult years following changes to the way events are run. Now, a fresh impetus for two-wheel-drive cars has brought the buzz back and entries are booming again. Events fall into asphalt and gravel categories and range from modest one-day events to multi-day challenges such as the biennial Roger Albert Clark Rally. The cost range is enormous, running from around £1000 at the budget end of the scale right up to £100,000 and more for an assault on the nine-day East African Safari Classic Rally. Most stage rally crews contest one-day UK events, notably running in the MSA British Historic Rally Championship where the action centres on pre-81 cars like the Ford Escort, Lotus Cortina, and Porsche 911. The spectacle of a BDG-powered Escort Mk2 in full flight in a Welsh forest remains one of the best things in historic motor sport. Some fine organisations are at the head of historic rallying. The Historic Rally Car Register (HRCR) [www.hrcr.co.uk] is a perfect portal for much of what is going on, including the grass roots events. Some of the best multi-day events come from the Historic Endurance Rally Organisation (HERO) [www.heroevents.eu] and the Endurance Rally Association (ERA), [www.endurorally.com] while the Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club (RACRMC) [www.racrmc.org] is at the forefront of historic special stage rallying.

Knutsford and District MC organise the superb Tour of Cheshire, as just one example, but don’t think this branch of motor sport is just for the grey-haired. The MSA is well aware that young navigators, such as Ali Proctor, Dan Harrison, Rachel Wakefield, Roger Bricknell and Andy Pullan, are proving that the young bloods are bringing a youthful enthusiasm to classic rallying; a form of motor sport that harks back to the 1950s but grows more and more popular every day. n

T

his spring, Nigel Greensall will celebrate 30 years of racing and is planning to be busier than ever this season following the creation of his own race team, Greensall Motor Sport. As a professional racing instructor and racer, he spends much of his life at circuits. In 2016 he spent a remarkable 310 days on track and last year he contested 70 races in UK, America, South Africa and across Europe. His wife Nikki, winner of the Formula Woman title a few years ago, handles the management and co-ordination of a busy schedule. “I started in a Royale RP31 Formula Ford at Mallory Park in April 1988 and could easily have done 1000 races by now,” says Greensall. “I’ve not stopped to count them up, but it’s a lot of seat time!” Along the way, his credits include being the fastest man ever around the original Castle Combe layout, lapping in a mind-blowing 50.59sec, close to 131mph, in a Formula 1 Tyrrell 022 in August 1997. Working life is largely spent coaching in modern and historic racing cars, but for 2018 his new race team, based at Bruntingthorpe in Leicestershire, will run a KTM in the six-round French GT4 Championship and three cars in the UK Fun Cup, with Nigel sharing one of them. He says there is no better place than the Fun Cup to get affordable seat time for novices and more experienced racers alike. Increasingly, Greensall’s schedule focuses on historic racing, and his ability to jump from car to car is widely recognised. Even some more experienced drivers have found benefit in his coaching. At events like the Donington Historic Festival, he has driven seven cars in five races, sometimes jumping between two cars in the same hour-long race. Central to his 2018 historic racing campaign is relative racing newcomer Chris Milner who had his first season of racing last year under Greensall’s guidance. “I’ll do more races with Chris in his Jaguar E-type and the Lister Costin Chevrolet, which is an absolute monster,” he says. Cars with more power than grip rate high on Greensall’s list of most fun to drive, but he is just as much at home in a high-downforce Radical sportscar. In many ways, it is a charmed existence for a driver who had to work hard to find drives in his early years. “It gets better and better!” n

Bishopscourt Circuit, Downpatrick A little-known gem of a track nestling among Emerald Isle hills. By Neil Briscoe

linging to the east coast of Northern Ireland, close to the town of Downpatrick, Bishopscourt Circuit is, it almost goes without saying, a former RAF station. It’s set in gorgeous rolling farmland, not far from the Irish Sea, and with the bulk of the Mourne Mountains glowering in the background. As with so many of the other surplus airfields dotted around the United Kingdom the original RAF Bishopscourt, with its 2000 yardlong main runway, made an ideal spot for motor sport. Unlike most other circuits, though, Bishopscourt actually remained an active RAF radar

installation right up to the 1990s. In the 1960s, the Ulster Automobile Club held its first races on a threemile circuit at Bishopscourt, using some of the main runway and much of the perimeter track. The first race victory at the track, in September of 1962, went to the great John Crosslé, driving in an event for 1172cc Ford sidevalve-engined specials. It was clearly a fast circuit, helped by the long main runway straight, and in 1963 the 100mph lap barrier was broken, by Tommy Reid in a Crosslé-tweaked Shelby Cobra. This being Northern Ireland, and with the Isle of Man only just beyond visible range over the horizon, motorbike

racing has of course been a regular fixture at Bishopscourt. None other than Barry Sheene won a 200cc event here in 1971, the only catch being that he was riding a 125cc bike… Through the 1970s and 1980s, though, racing ceased at the track as the security situation and the encroachment of ‘The Troubles’ put paid to any events. Indeed, in 1973, the radar installations adjacent to the track were actually bombed, and the Ulster Automobile Club was told it couldn’t use the track. When the RAF finally dismantled its radar installations and left in 1990, though, little time was wasted and the circuit was revived, chiefly thanks to the work of Davy and Barbara Beattie and John Griffin along with the Motorcycle Road Racing Club of Ireland. The track was used again for a motorbike race in 1992, won by Leslie McMaster on a 350cc Yamaha. Since then, under the ownership of Jim O’Brien since the early 2000s, Bishopscourt has been largely a ’bike track, with an occasional visit from four-wheeled racers, including a oneoff Eurocar event in 1994. The track now stays away from the old runways, and uses two main loops — the 1.83-mile racing circuit, and the 2.13-mile International track. There’s also a shorter 1.4-mile intermediate circuit. A full resurfacing was carried out in 2011, along with a new race control tower and other facilities. As with the original, there are long straights — the pit straight itself is decent, but what would be a cracker of a back straight, between turns seven and 11, is broken up by two chicanes. Bishopscourt holds the annual Sunflower Trophy races for motorbike categories including 600cc supersport bikes, sidecars, and others. It will also hold the Stages Rally event in March this year. Current lap records are held by Christian Iddon on a Tyco BMW bike, at 100.676mph, and Chris Needham from Cheshire, in an Anderson/FPE kart, which hit 101.63mph during a superkart meeting in 2012. n

Oiled to win Born of American NASCAR team Joe Gibbs Racing, this range of oils puts the racer first Competition drives innovation. The Driven Racing Oil range of race oils were originally created to improve engine and driveline performance in all-out race and high-performance engines. Driven products are unique because they always put the ‘motor ahead of the molecule’. Often oil companies have no real world understanding of how these products are used but Driven keeps things in the proper order. Oil is for the motor, not the other way around. Driven’s product development team always looks at the motor and how it is used. Products are designed for specific applications using a “zero compromise” approach that delivers a measurable performance advantage on the track. www.drivenracingoil.co.uk

National Court

Motor Sports Council National Court SITTING MONDAY 15TH JANUARY

David Munro (Chairman), Mark Heywood, Chris Mount, David Scott CASE No J2017 -45 The National Court has considered the appeal of Stewart Oliver in relation to the decision of the stewards of the British Truck Racing Championship on 26th September 2017. The decision of the championship stewards concerned the allocation of championship points following the last race at Snetterton on 10th September 2017. The championship regulations at regulation 1.6.1 mandate the points awarded to the competitors listed as classified finishes in each class. The regulations do not accord the stewards and discretion to vary that award of points. General regulation W.2.2.1 provides that the championship stewards can only adjudicate upon any disputes, irregularities or appeals arising from the approved championship regulations. The championship stewards decided that the results of the race should be declared null and void for Division One Trucks and that this race should not count towards the 2017 championship. The Appellant contends that the championship stewards had no such power. The Court notes that the race in question was run under very difficult circumstances caused by earlier incidents and delays to the timetable. Faced with these difficulties it is clear that all the officials strove to obtain the best outcome for competitors and spectators alike. The race results were, however, published with the consequence that the championship stewards

www.msauk.org / Spring 2018

National Court_GR.indd 1

had no discretion but to award points to the classified finishers in accordance with the championship regulations. The Court is satisfied that the championship stewards did not have the authority to declare the results from this race null and void and the results will therefore remain as published. It therefore follows that this appeal must succeed and points must be allocated in accordance with the championship regulations. The appeal fee should be refunded. DAVID MUNRO, CHAIRMAN

SITTING THURSDAY 7TH DECEMBER David Munro (Chairman), Mike Garton, Guy Spollen CASE No J2017 -46

The National Court has considered the eligibility appeal of Shaun Traynor. This matter arises from a round of the 750 Motor Club Toyota MR2 Championship, which was held at Snetterton Circuit on 24th September 2017. Following a post-race protest in which it was claimed that an MR2, competition number 27 driven by Mr Traynor, had “excessive camber”, the car’s camber angles were measured, firstly in the Scrutineering Bay and then again on a concrete plinth in the pitlane. On each occasion three of the four wheels were found to be within the maximum permitted negative camber of three degrees specified by the Toyota MR2 Championship Sporting & Technical Regulations 2017. Regulation 5.8.1 states that, “Adjustability of suspension geometry is limited to that provided by the vehicle manufacturer for the original suspension except camber,

which may be no more than three degrees negative”. The rear left-hand wheel of car number 27, when checked, had been found to have 3.1 degrees negative camber and consequently the vehicle was found to be ineligible. It is against that finding that Mr Traynor now appeals. It is noted that: 1. The championship regulations do not specify how the camber measurement is to be taken and do not state whether or not the driver should be in the car. 2. There is a concern expressed by the appellant and not disputed by the Chief Scrutineer that the surface in the Scrutineering Bay was not sufficiently even to permit an accurate camber measurement to be made. 3. The second place of measurement – the pitlane plinth – was also uneven and therefore unsuitable for accurate measurement of camber angles, which again was not disputed by the Chief Scrutineer. 4. The Longacre Digital Castor Camber Gauge used to measure the camber angles of the appellant’s car was probably only accurate to +/-1 degree according to the information provided by the manufacturers. 5. The apparent discrepancy in the angle of the rear left-hand wheel was 0.1 degree. 6. The Chief Scrutineer had not been made aware of the potential tolerance inherent in the camber castor gauge and does not disagree with the matters raised in (1 ), (2) and (3) above. Accordingly, this appeal is allowed. The Court orders that the appeal fee is to be returned and that the appellant is to be reinstated in the results of the race. The Court also notes the concerns expressed about the difficulties encountered in obtaining an accurate camber measurement and asks that consideration is given to establishing the technical suitability of the ‘flat patch’ area to ensure that similar difficulties may be avoided in the future. DAVID MUNRO, CHAIRMAN

SITTING MONDAY 15TH JANUARY

David Munro (Chairman), Mark Heywood, Chris Mount, David Scott CASE No J2017-48 The National Court has considered the Eligibility Appeal of James Gornall, a competitor in the Nankang Tyre BMW Compact Cup. His vehicle, Competition No1, was the subject of postseason scrutineering and as a consequence the engine was stripped and examined by W B Kennedy, the Eligibility Scrutineer for the BRSCC Compact Cup, at the premises of RAW Motorsport on 11th November 2017. Mr Kennedy undertook the examination of the engine together with Roger Trotman, the author of the Technical File used by the BRSCC BMW Race Days Compact Cup Championship. He was entitled to employ a suitably experienced assistance during the examination by virtue of GR G7.1.4. The examination revealed clear evidence that the crankshaft had been ground to the front web, and accordingly Mr Kennedy concluded that it had been modified and was therefore not compliant with Championship Regulation 5. 7 .1 which requires that, “Engine parts must be standard unmodified OEM Parts or standard modified pattern parts manufactured for the M44. “Verification of legality of OEM engine parts will be by comparison to the Compact Club Championship Technical File, or by comparison to standard unmodified OEM parts.” The National Court concludes that the examination was conducted in accordance with the regulations and that the crankshaft did not comply with Regulation 5.7.1. Accordingly, this appeal must fail. The appeal fee is forfeit and the Appellant is ordered to pay £750.00 costs. DAVID MUNRO, CHAIRMAN

Club Focus

Southsea Motor Club runs a variety of events from autosolos, autocross and autotests to the South Downs Stages rally

Southsea Motor Club Rewarded for its efforts to attract young members

S

ome years ago, members of the Southsea Motor Club came to a sobering realisation that will be familiar with clubs up and down the country: the average age of members was heading north. “We just looked around one day and saw that the people who do all the organising and run the club were getting older,” says Keith Shepherd, club chairman. “And we realised that unless we started attracting younger people the club didn’t have a future.” Since then the club has worked hard to encourage younger people to join through a variety of initiatives including getting them involved in scrutineering and marshalling, and in January it was rewarded for its efforts by being named the JLT MSA Club of the Year at the annual Night of Champions awards in London. “It was completely unexpected but a great honour,” says Shepherd. “We now have to try and live up to the award.” Southsea Motor Club was founded in 1931 but its association with motoring goes back to 1922 when the first Southsea Speed Carnival was held, using the sea front as

a sprint course. Notable vehicles at this event included Count Louis Zbronskis’ 23-litre ‘Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang’ (immortalised in the Disney film) and the renowned 1.5-litre AC of JA Joyce. This AC was the first light car to achieve 100mph, winning the Standing Start Mile at the Southsea Carnival at a speed of 69.5mph. According to the club’s website at least two current members can remember being there as children. Today the club puts on a variety of events from autosolos and autocross to the annual South Downs Stages rally. It also has a partnership with the East Hants District Council to put on autotests for youngsters over the age of 14 who want to get behind the wheel of a car in a safe and controlled environment. “The average age of membership is slowly falling and we now have 200 members,” says Shepherd. “It is important because unless you pass on your knowledge and skills to the younger generation, then it disappears.” At the present rate, the club looks to be all set for a healthy centenary in 2031. n
