JOHN SURTEES CBE, 1934-2017 The MSA has paid tribute to motorsport legend John Surtees CBE, who passed away last Friday (10 March) aged 83. John made history as the only man to win world championships on four wheels and two, with four 500cc motorcycle triumphs in the 1950s and ’60s, followed by the 1964 F1 title. In recent years he established the Henry Surtees Foundation in memory of his late son, Henry. He also bought Buckmore Park Kart Circuit in Kent and remained a stalwart support of UK motorsport throughout his life. Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, said: “John’s passing is an enormous loss to motorsport in so many ways; the legend, the history, the heritage, the passion and the commitment, not to mention the success, which will not be surpassed. “I recently spent some time with John at his home, where despite his frailty he was as enthusiastic as ever to talk about further plans for Buckmore Park, the development of karting generally and of course his beloved Henry Surtees Foundation. “We send our condolences to John’s wife, Jane, and to his daughters, Leonora and Edwina.”

BMSAD CHAIRMAN RECEIVED MSA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD David Butler MBE, chairman of the British Motor Sports Association for the Disabled (BMSAD), received the MSA Lifetime Achievement Award during the Motor Sports Council’s annual dinner at the Royal Automobile Club (14 March). Butler is the only disabled driver worldwide to have qualified for both an international race and international rally licence, and has competed in over 600 motorsport events. He has been Chairman of BMSAD for more than 25 years and is also a long-standing member of the MSA Medical Advisory Panel, representing all disabled drivers wishing to participate in the sport. The accolade was presented by MSA Chairman Alan Gow. Butler said: “Having received a lifetime achievement award, I feel I should be standing with a placard saying, ‘the end is nigh’! I have to say that it has been a great privilege to be able to assist in making motor racing a fully inclusive sport. I commend the MSA and its Medical Advisory Panel on their enlightened attitude toward disability. Thank you for the award; I am truly honoured.” This year’s after dinner speaker was Dennis Carter, an MSA Board member, who has lived what Council Chairman Tony Scott Andrews described as ‘a riotous life’ over several decades in motorsport.

MSA SUPPORTS FIA CAMPAIGN IN PARTNERSHIP WITH JCDecaux The FIA and outdoor advertising giant JCDecaux have joined forces to launch #3500LIVES, a new campaign promoting simple and universal messages to save lives on roads. Car crashes are responsible for 3,500 fatalities every day worldwide. They are also the leading cause of fatality in the 15-29 age group. The #3500LIVES campaign promotes the FIA’s 10 Golden Rules through 13 famous ambassadors including athletes, racing drivers, artists and politicians. Billboards, posters and visuals promoting #3500LIVES and featuring the MSA logo are being displayed on JCDecaux advertising space in Greater London and Greater Manchester. There is also a series of YouTube films featuring the campaign ambassadors. Jean Todt, FIA President, said: “We are proud to have worked together with JCDecaux on this campaign, and also with 13 fantastic Ambassadors, each of which is a role model, especially for young people, the group worst affected by road crashes.” Members of the public are also invited to sign a ten point manifesto calling on all governments to make road safety a priority and introduce effective legislation on key risk factors on the road. MG CLUB GEARS UP FOR NEW SEASON The MG Car Club has extended half-price entry fees to young drivers aged up to 25, to help them follow in the footsteps of the likes of BTCC racer Jack Goff, a former MG Trophy star. The club’s 2017 race season gets under way on 9 April at Donington Park and ends at Snetterton on 30 September to 1 October. In between are visits to Brands Hatch, Silverstone for MGLive! and Oulton Park.

NEW ASWMC WEBSITE
The Association of South Western Motor Clubs is pleased to announce that its new website is now live at www.aswmc.org.uk. The new site is another step in the process of revising the Association’s media channels and publications. A small sub-committee of the Association has been working over the past year to completely re-design the website as well as making it compatible with a variety of mobile devices. The site has many new features, including topic links, online championship registration, downloadable calendars, a searchable list of member clubs, and the re-organisation of the extensive ASWMC results archive.

MOTORSPORT MEDICS STAR IN LATEST MSA MAGAZINE The latest issue of MSA magazine is landing on doormats across the UK, featuring a cover story on motorsport medics and their invaluable contribution to the sport. DORSET CLUB HOSTS INTERCLUB RTV COMPETITION The Dorset Land Rover Club organised and hosted a successful inter-club trials competition for Road Taxed Vehicles at Mannington.
Thirty-two drivers signed on to compete in the annual RTV trial, making it the biggest in the event’s four-year history, with vehicles and drivers representing the Hants & Berks Rover Owners Club and the Somerset & Wilts LRC, as well as the Dorset Land Rover Club. Hants & Berks LROC’s Alan Braclik won the standard class aboard an immaculately prepared 90. Alex Moore, of Somerset & Wilts LROC, won the modified class for the second year in a row. Rog Pardy, Chairman of The Dorset Land Rover Club and Clerk of the Course, said: “This is the biggest turn-out for this event that we’ve ever had, and I’d like to thank everyone who helped to organise and run such a successful day.”

EPYNT CLUB DONATES TO GOOD CAUSES Epynt Motor Club raised £1750 for local causes last year through its two major local rallies, the Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally in August and the D.G Jones Agri Powys Lanes Rally. The Powys Lanes event generated £1,500, which was split between the Bracken Trust – supporting local people and their families suffering with cancer – and Wales Air Ambulance. It was the club’s sixth donation to the air ambulance charity, bringing the total pledged since 2011 to £2800. Wales Air Ambulance’s Peter and Joanna Tonks said: “Wales Air Ambulance relies on these donations to help improve and expand the service it provides. The possibility of limited night flying and neonatal incubators fitted to the helicopters will provide a service that will help many more people in Wales.” Meanwhile the Mewla Rally donated £250 to Sennybridge Junior Football Team. Epynt Motor Club also raised £25 for Children in Need at one of its Autotests.
HSCC UNVEILS OULTON PARK GOLD CUP LINE-UP
The Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) has unveiled its line-up of races for the Oulton Park Gold Cup (2628 August), capped by the return of Historic Formula 2. Other headline races include the Super Touring Trophy, the Jaguar Classic Challenge and the Historic Touring Car Challenge for touring cars from 1966 to 1990. A full line-up of HSCC championships for singleseaters, sports cars and touring cars will pack out the weekend and the two F2 races will carry the coveted Gold Cup title. MORE OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLISTS GEAR UP FOR SILVERSTONE CLASSIC RACE CHALLENGE A trio of gold medal-winning Olympic rowers are the latest additions to the ‘star-studded’ grid set to contest the world’s biggest celebrity motor race at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (28-30 July). Brothers Greg and Jonny Searle won gold medals competing together in the Coxed Pair at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, while Mark Hunter’s golden moment came 16 years later in the Lightweight Double Sculls in Beijing. Now all three are hoping to make a splash at the home of the British Grand Prix. Having passed their ARDS tests last weekend at Silverstone, the trio are all set to join an illustrious 50-car grid all racing Austin A30 and A35 saloons – harking back to the late fifties. “I’m thrilled to have passed the test and now all I want to do is drive as much as I can, and as fast as I can,” said Greg Searle. “I was very nervous when I first got in the car but, once the adrenalin and buzz of competition kicked-in, the excitement took over.” “It was awesome, I loved it,” agreed Hunter. “I’m now really looking forward to

putting the learning to the test in July. The concentration side of things is similar to rowing but the adrenalin side is worlds apart – driving wins hands down!” The three rowers will join a glittering lineup which already includes two more of Britain’s gold medallists – Jason Kenny CBE and Amy Williams MBE – as well as former England test cricket captain Mike Gatting OBE, Dragon’s Den TV star Theo Paphitis and a host of other famous faces from sport, film and television. Early Bird tickets for the 2017 Silverstone Classic are on sale until the end of March with adult admission prices starting from £35 and the cost of the three-day weekend ticket priced at £99. BRITISH RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP REVS UP FOR EXCITING NEW SEASON The UK’s premier rally championship gets under way this weekend on the Border Counties Rally, kicking off a raft of changes this season. With new title partner Prestone, the new-look, seven-round MSA British Rally Championship takes in events across Britain as well as an overseas round in Belgium – the first in BRC history. Jedburgh Abbey will provide the dramatic backdrop for the opening round, the Border Counties Rally.
The whistle-stop tour continues with the mixed-surface Nicky Grist Stages, followed by the demanding John Mulholland Motors Ulster Rally before the season finale on the picturesque Isle of Man.
Another new addition for 2017 will be the Kenotek Ypres Rally in northern Belgium in June. The fast and flowing Belgian roads will represent a new challenge for most of the competitors and will offer the opportunity for the BRC crews to go head-to-head with some of the best drivers in Europe.
CIK-FIA NOMINEES ANNOUNCED The MSA is pleased to announce that karters Joseph Taylor and Alex Simmonds will represent the UK in the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy.
Meanwhile 13-year-old Simmonds put in an impressive performance in last year’s British Cadet Championship and earlier this year won at PFI amongst a field of over 60 Junior X30 drivers.
The pair have big shoes to fill with last year’s representative Callum Bradshaw winning the championship.
The MSA also nominated 13-year-old Alicia Barrett to be considered for the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission Academy Trophy entry.
Twelve-year-old Taylor was 2015 Formula Kart Stars Cadet Champion and finished second in last year’s MSA British Cadet Kart Championship.
The world renowned three-round championship kicks off in Genk, Belgium on the 14 May, before rounds in Le Mans (France) and Alahärmä (Finland).

VOLUNTEERS RECEIVE TORCH TROPHY ACCOLADES Two motorsport volunteers were recognised at the Torch Trophy Trust awards – the first time that the MSA has successfully nominated winners of these prestigious accolades. Held at the British Olympic Association (BOA) in London, the silverware was presented by HRH The Earl of Wessex. Gary Nicholls was recognised in his 40th year in the sport, having started as a competitor. He is Chairman of Association of Eastern Motor Clubs, sits on Chelmsford MC’s committee, and is part of the MSA Timekeeping Advisory Panel. Robert Harte was nominated primarily for his work on the Circuit of Ireland rally’s marshal videos; he devised the concept, scripted and presented the films. He also created marshals’ cards with useful phrases on them, including in foreign languages, and he volunteers on a number of events in a variety of roles. Torch Trophy Trust Chairman Paul Dimond said: “There is no doubt that both Robert and Gary have provided outstanding and

selfless volunteer work to support their sport and are fully deserving of their individual recognition. Every year the Trust sets out to acknowledge the terrific army of volunteers who offer priceless support to their chosen sport and local community and they are clearly incredible ambassadors and exceptional contributors. “The Trust has been recognising worthy sports-focused volunteers since 1962 and I’m delighted Robert and Gary are now recognised as part of a distinguished group that dates back more than half a century.” Jonathan Day, MSA Development Director, and Suze Endean, MSA Development Manager, attended on behalf of the MSA.

FIA SAFETY WEBSITE There is a very useful area on the FIA website relating to safety, this is where you will find – amongst other things – useful bulletins detailing any amendments or changes to FIA safety equipment homologations. There is also lots of interesting and useful information on event and venue safety. It is worth regularly checking this site for updates.
FIA HISTORIC DATABASE WEBSITE Competitors are advised that the FIA’s new Historic Database website is constantly increasing the amount of data available. Although development continues and it is by no means complete, there is already a great deal of useful information readily available. The website has a searchable database of vehicle homologations, where the FIA homologation papers and other useful information about the individual vehicles can be viewed. The database also contains a number of period regulations for various formulae, events and championships, along with period copies of FIA Appendix J. It is being added to all the time with new homologations and regulations being uploaded, so it will continue to grow into a very useful resource.

RallyFuture Helping to ensure a bright future for stage rallying in the UK
MSA CLARIFIES ‘BUDDYING’ PROVISION FOR RALLY MARSHALS The MSA has clarified the ‘buddying’ principles for stage rally marshalling, as part of the RallyFuture project to help ensure the sport’s future by further enhancing safety. There are now three types of stage rally marshal: registered, accredited and currently non-accredited. Registered marshals are those who have completed the MSA’s online rally marshals’ training modules and gone on to register with the MSA. Accredited marshals are those who have completed the online training but not registered. Currently non-accredited marshals are those who have done neither. Those marshals who are currently nonaccredited continue to play an important role in the safe and effective running of events but they must be ‘buddied’ with
either an accredited or a registered marshal at a maximum ratio of four-to-one. This means that for every group of five marshals, at least one must be either registered or accredited. Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, said: “The registration and accreditation process has been a well-received and important step among those who have completed the online modules, but it is essential that we continue to welcome those who have yet to undertake the process and this provision ensures their vital inclusion.”
The online rally marshals training modules were designed to ensure – and allow the MSA to demonstrate – that all stage rally marshals have a common understanding of their roles and responsibilities, spectator engagement and how to handle an incident. Academy Equipping the UK’s most promising young drivers
CO-DRIVERS TO CHESTERFIELD
National rally star Steve Perez gave five of the UK’s most promising young co-drivers a money-can’t-buy experience aboard a WRC car in Chesterfield earlier this month (4-5 March). MSA Academy navigators Max Freeman, Aaron Johnston, Siobhan Pugh, Charley Sayer-Payne, Caron Tomlinson, Keaton Williams and Tom Woodburn joined programme leaders Nicky Grist and Paul Spooner for a classroom session on the complex role of a professional co-driver. They then had exclusive use of Perez’s private stage, to test their newfound knowledge and skills. First they made pace notes from the comfort of a road car, before climbing aboard the former BTRDA Gold Star Champion’s Ford Focus WRC and tackling the stage at competition speed. The co-drivers also underwent a sports psychology session and the MSA’s anti-doping presentation by Academy Manager and qualified UKAD advisor Greg Symes.

Academy PRYCE ANNOUNCES BRC COMEBACK Team UK’s rally star Osian Pryce will chase this year’s Prestone MSA British Rally Championship (BRC) title as well as glory on the world stage. Osian will drive a Ford Fiesta R5 in the BRC, starting with this weekend’s Border Counties Rally in Scotland. In addition to his seven-round British commitment, Pryce will tackle three rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) in a Ford Fiesta R5 prepared by twotime world champion squad M-Sport.

Pryce’s entry at Rally Poland and Rally Finland comes courtesy of winning last year’s Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy, the WRC-based one-make series for world rallying’s most promising young drivers. “This is my biggest year ever,” said Pryce, 24, “it’s what I’ve been working towards since I started in the sport at the age of 16. “The BRC is unfinished business for me. I competed against Britain’s best for three years; I finished third in the first season and second in the next two. I’ve got the chance to close the BRC out now and that’s really important for me.” Pryce will be joined at Spencer Sport by fellow MSA Academy members James Williams and Phil Hall, who are contending the Junior BRC.
MARSHALL NAMED AS PADDON’S NEW CODRIVER MSA Team UK graduate Seb Marshall has been named as Hayden Paddon’s new co-driver after John Kennard announced his retirement last week. Marshall will take over for the final four rounds of the WRC season, beginning with ADAC Rallye Deutschland (17 - 20 August). The twenty-eight-year-old partnered Australian champion Molly Taylor for several seasons before joining Kevin Abbring in 2014 in the European Championship. The pair joined Hyundai Motorsport in 2015 but Marshall stepped down as the Dutchman’s co-driver at the start of this season. He has been working with Paddon during testing and the pair will compete together for the first time at the non-championship Rallye Sanremo (29 March - 1 April) in Italy in an i20 R5. Marshall’s new role means that there are now three MSA Academy graduates co-driving in the WRC, with former Rally Elite members Scott Martin and Dan Barritt also in the championship.

MARK HUCKLEBRIDGE, 1978-2017 Mark Hucklebridge was in the first cohort of MSA Academy Coaches when the AASE programme was launched in 2008, and acted as a Coach for the MotoX riders who joined the programme. Prior to coaching Mark was a very successful MotoX rider himself, riding successfully in the World MX Championship for a number of years and claiming numerous British Championships. Despite coming from a two wheeled background Huck was able to bring huge value to those from the four wheeled community. He always had a smile on his face and a passion for developing young people. Huck was diagnosed in 2010 with stage four bowel, liver and lung cancer and was told his illness was terminal in February 2014. His aim from this point onwards was to live life to its fullest. It was this determination and his bright personality which enabled him to live his life right up to the very end.

Huck even set up his own Charity “Friends of Huck” to aid people who find themselves in a place of financial hardship through ill-heath or injury by the provision of grants of money, services, and equipment that the person in need could not afford, or have access to, without the help of the charity. To date the Charity has raised in excess of £100,000. The MSA Academy will remember Huck fondly and send all their thoughts and best wishes to Huck’s wife Emma, son Charlie, the rest of the Hucklebridge family and friends. TEIFI VALLEY MOTOR CLUB Formed in 1959, Teifi Valley Motor Club (TVMC) organise three successful events, the Rali Bro Preseli, Dale Stages and the Cilwendeg road rally.
The Rali Bro Preseli is a charity event, raising somewhere in the region of £35,000 for local charities to date. Last year’s event attracted a maximum entry of 75 cars with 22 reserves and was won by Tim Hand and Jason Davies. The club’s stage rally, the Lawrence Landfill Dale Stages was a round of three different championships and attracted an entry of 73 cars. Won by Bob Fowden and Paul Wakley in a Subaru Impreza WRC, the event was organised by former BRC co-driver and BTRDA Champion, Eurig “Bryngwyn” Evans. The final rally of the year was the Cilwendeg, the final round of the Welsh Road Rally Championship. 2016’s event was oversubscribed with a maximum 90 car entry and 16 reserves. The Cilwendeg was the first event ever organised by TVMC back in 1960, and is still

regarded as one of the events that every road rally competitor wants to win. Last year the club attended four promotional shows and worked with Wales RDO Howard Davies to attract new members at the Cardigan Show. TVMC also do their bit for charity, organising a bike ride in October from Aberaeron to Llangeitho and back. 39 riders took part, raising over £400 for Cardigan Oxygen Therapy Centre and Marie Curie in memory of the late Ceinwen Davies. The active club also found time to run the Myherin stage of Wales Rally GB and organised a gymkhana event for 16 cars between Christmas and the New Year. With over 300 members TVMC has a great deal of success in various events and championships, including the Welsh Historic Rally Championship, which was won by two members. The club shows no signs of slowing down yet!

LARNE MOTOR CLUB
Larne Motor Club strengthened its relationship with Belfast Metropolitan College when club members Jonathan Millar and Gillian Magee visited the venue in February with Northern Ireland Regional Development Officer (RDO), Jonathan MacDonald. The club, which finished runner-up in the 2016 JLT MSA Club of the Year, first visited the college in April 2016 when they laid on a ‘Go Motorsport’ demonstration autosolo within the college grounds. Belfast Met Lecturer Steven McKeegan, who is also a licensed MSA scrutineer, secured the use of the venue, and the demonstration allowed students to enjoy passenger runs in the cars. They also had an opportunity to look around specialist autotest vehicles, as well as watch a car extraction demonstration thanks to the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service. Fast-forward to 2017 and the club is continuing its links with the college. On 27 February, Jonathan Millar arrived with his Citroen C2, a car that he uses at autotests and targa rallies, while RDO Jonathan MacDonald brought a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 2 stage rally car. After a short presentation about motorsport, which included a video showing action from Larne Motor Club›s autotest, the students had an opportunity to look around the cars and ask questions.
“We’ve had three students join the club from Belfast Met,” Jonathan Millar said. “Last year’s event at the college was very well received and a couple of the students were reminiscing about it during February’s visit. It’s great that they still talk about it and you can be sure that they’ve told other people about it too.”
What Next? Larne Motor Club members are also busy planning their motorsport season of events which kicks off with a clubman autotest in the middle of June, closely followed by the two-day Cairncastle Hill Climb, a round of the Northern Ireland Championship. “We’re tagging on to a Road Safety Community Event at the start of March in Larne town centre to promote the club,” Millar said. “We’ll have a couple of cars there, we’ll be handing out flyers and we’ll be telling members of the public all about Larne Motor Club.” “As well as that, we had six new members who attended our club meeting at the end of February,” he continued. “They arrived as a result of our Facebook page. I created an ‘event’ on the page, listed the time, date and location of the club meeting and invited everyone to come along. I couldn’t believe it when I saw six new faces there!” Enticing new blood into the sport isn’t easy. In fact, some might say it’s an impossible task but Larne Motor Club is proving that simply isn’t true. With a bit of dedicated effort from one or two club members, other clubs could mirror the success that Larne Motor Club is enjoying. So what are you waiting for? What role(s) do you volunteer in?
When not competing, and family permitting, I try to help in any event the club or other local clubs organise. I’ve marshalled in 12 cars, Targas, Autosolos, Stage Rallies, Historic… For the last two years I’ve been Chief Marshal in the 2 major events CMC organise (i.e. The Preston and the Brands Hatch Stages).
How long have you been volunteering for?
I first marshalled in 2010, I had recently joined the club and I volunteered to marshal on a Gymkhana. I got hooked…
What or who inspired you to get into motor sport?
I grew up in Asturias (Northern Spain) where closed road rallying was, and still is, a big thing. Since I was very little I remember going with my dad and older brother to spectate on stages and hillclimbs. I was a teenager during the golden era of WRC and, of course, Carlos Sainz was the hero back in Spain.
Brief volunteering history to present?
I had a classic Mini and I was a member of the local Mini club. I soon grew bored of the static car shows and decided to get in touch via the internet with my most local motor club. I felt very welcome and was invited to marshal on a club gymkhana at

Woodbridge. I really enjoyed that and I started volunteering in other club events, a lot of events since CMC is a very active club, including Endurance, Targas, Historic and Stage Rallies as well as autosolos by other clubs in East Anglia. Someone in the club spotted my passion and commitment and invited me to join organising teams. 2014 was the first time I was Chief Marshal on a Targa and since then I’ve been CM in two stage rallies at Brands Hatch and The Preston Navigational rally.
What’s the best thing about being a motor sport volunteer? It’s about putting something back into the sport that I love. Even the smallest club level event requires a great commitment and time effort by the organising team. Seeing competitors smiling at the end of an event after having had a good day/night out is what’s all about.
What piece of advice would you give to a new volunteer?
Get involved and don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if you think it may be a silly question… we all started somewhere. In this era of the Internet, you can ask these questions from home but make an effort to attend your local club meets. Usually held at a pub, it’s a great place to meet likeminded people, share experiences, get advice and, of course, great banter and support. Competitors are very appreciative and without new blood in volunteering the sport cannot survive.

Go Motorsport Bringing newcomers to the sport
EAST MIDLANDS RDO TANIA BROWN The first question to ask is why your club wishes to attract newcomers to motorsport. It may seem like an obvious question but there can be several reasons. We need ‘new’ blood to continue the sport, but at club level there are several variations on this theme. Do you need volunteers, spectators or competitors? Why do you need to attract them? Some clubs may have a constant membership level and wish to increase numbers, and some may lack people who are prepared to get their hands dirty. This is a starting point, only once you know why you want to attract newcomers, and in which area, can you tackle how to do it. Clubs may need people in all areas, certainly nearly every club I have worked with since becoming a Regional Development Officer, is thinking about retaining and recruiting volunteers. It is well known that motorsport cannot happen without volunteers, but it is also true that it cannot happen without new competitors as well. Spectators are part of the equation too. Spectators often turn into marshals and competitors. Competitors usually join a club so they can compete, but there is not the same need for spectators, what can you offer them as a club? Many may be happy with club nights and publications. But how do you know what your members want? Many successful clubs have popular club nights or social media pages. Both can offer a two way conversation that benefits a club, however not everyone wants to attend a club night and not everyone wants to or can use social media.

Knowing your club and what you have to offer allows you to tailor the benefits to your members. Many Land Rover clubs in my area have excellent Facebook pages that are full of useful information as well as upcoming events. To any newcomer on the scene, being able to find information easily from the outside makes it much easier to come along and join in. The advice may seem trite but simply having someone to welcome newcomers to a club night so they do not feel left out can make a huge amount of difference. Having a website, Facebook or Twitter page where people can find information makes it easier for them to take the plunge and get involved. The rally world has seen the introduction of the online marshals’ training and accreditation scheme. It is important to remember that not being accredited does not mean that you cannot come along as a newbie, it just means you have to be buddied up. Much as many of us were in our early days, this is just a more formal setting for it. Hibernation has ended in Scotland, and with the slightly warmer weather, covers have been removed from cars and buggies. The first round of the Scottish Tarmac Rally Championship took place at Knockhill in February and Scotland RDO Alison Clark took along pupils from nearby Woodmill High School. The school has a popular motorsports club, with success in both the Greenpower and F1 in Schools projects. Alison had previously visited the school with a view to forming a bond with Glenrothes Motor Sports Club. With Knockhill being so close, Alison saw the Grant Construction Stages as the perfect
opportunity for the pupils to get under the bonnets of cars and help out in the service area. Despite the brutal weather - which saw the group having to walk backwards across the paddock to avoid the biting hailstones and wind - the pupils’ enthusiasm was clear. Being able to access the pit lane, control room, scrutineering area, media room and marshals’ area created much excitement. Competitors spoke with pupils and took time to explain the mechanics and modifications of their cars, time cards and stage maps. Marshals also explained their safety and timekeeping roles.
