WRGB 2016 ROUTE REVEALED A RallyFest stage at Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire is among the highlights of Dayinsure Wales Rally GB’s extended route, which was officially unveiled on 1 June. Once again based at Toyota’s Deeside engine plant, the event will begin with a ceremonial start at Parc Eirias in Colwyn Bay on Thursday 27 October. Crews will then tackle 208 competitive miles across 22 special stages predominantly across North and Mid Wales. These include reverse runs through Myherin and Hafren for the first time in more than 20 years, and the addition of Pantperthog for the first time since 1997. The winners will be crowned furing the ceremonial finish on Mostyn Street in Llandudno the Sunday afternoon. “The Welsh Government’s support for the Rally shows our continued commitment to the event, which has significant links with the automotive sector in Wales,” said Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure. “Wales is home to around 150 component and systems manufacturing companies and has 18,500 people employed in automotive manufacturing with an

annual turnover of circa £3.4 billion. We look forward to the adventure in October.” Home hero Elfyn Evans added: “It looks as though the organisers are well on their way to producing another great event. All of the classics are in there as well as some exciting new additions. Running three stages in the opposite direction will certainly provide a new challenge and the inclusion of Pantperthog only adds to that. “It was great to see so many spectators out on the stages last year and additions such as the Cholmondeley Castle RallyFest stage should attract even more. Every driver receives an incredible amount of support in Wales, and I’m sure that everyone will be looking forward to all that this year’s edition has to offer.” For full route details and ticket information, visit www.walesrallygb.com.

WRC RETURNS TO HISTORIC CHESTER The FIA World Rally Championship will return to the historic city of Chester for the first time in 20 years on 28 October. The stars and cars from the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB (27-30 October) will visit the iconic walled city having completed their first day of competition in the legendary forests of mid-Wales. As the climax to a special ‘Chester Rally Week’, the crews will start arriving in Chester on the Friday evening, passing under the famous Eastgate Clock before stopping for autographs and selfies on Eastgate. Another photo opportunity will follow when the cars proceed over the official Dayinsure Wales Rally GB ramp and through the official Time Control on Bridge Street en route to an overnight halt at the busy Deeside Rally Village in neighbouring Flintshire. “It’s going to be a fabulous occasion and I’d like to thank all those in Chester who’ve worked so hard to make this possible,” said Ben Taylor, Wales Rally GB Managing Director. “We are constantly looking at exciting new ways to widen the rally’s appeal to both existing fans and new audiences and this special evening in central Chester will certainly do just that. The city has a particularly strong link with the WRC events of the past, so returning to these hallowed streets makes this return all the more exciting.”

D2BD INSPIRES NORTHERN IRELAND One hundred Northern Ireland schoolgirls discovered the exciting and varied world of motorsport when Dare To Be Different visited Nutts Corner last month (17 May). As per the inaugural D2BD event at Sandown Park, 100 girls from ten local schools tried karting for the very first time. Porsche Carrera Cup GB competitor and former Karting World Champion Charlie Eastwood was on hand as they took the track. “Although many of the girls were understandably apprehensive having never done anything like this before, once they began feeling more comfortable out on the circuit, you could see their confidence begin to build,” said Eastwood.

4

“Of course, motor sport is about far more than just driving, and the wealth of career opportunities across the industry is mind-boggling – for every racing driver, there are tens if not hundreds of vital unsung heroes behind-the-scenes making it all possible. Hopefully we have helped to inspire some dreams.” Lewis Hamilton’s title-winning Mercedes AMG F1 car on display at the track, while national flagship programme STEMNET (Science, Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics Network) delivered a fun and educational hovercraftbuilding exercise. The girls also learned presenting skills with Sky Sports F1’s Rachel Brookes – a Dare To Be Different ambassador. There were further workshops on diet and fitness. After each event, there will be a prize for the participant who most effectively communicates and spreads the Dare To Be Different message to her fellow students upon returning to school. “Looking at the smiles across their faces, all of the girls had a fantastic day and I think it truly opened their eyes to the possibilities offered by our sport,” said D2BD co-founder Susie Wolff. “We had a raft of activities that were educational, informative and most of all, fun. Dare To Be Different is all about overturning preconceptions and showing that girls are every bit as capable of forging a career in motor sport as boys are – the opportunities are there for everyone.” MSA Extra / June 2016

STAGE RALLY SAFETY REQUIREMENTS UPDATED Updates to the 2016 Stage Rally Safety Requirements have been published as part of the on-going RallyFuture campaign to further enhance safety in UK stage rallying. The Stage Rally Safety Requirements represent a common template for the organisation of all UK stage rallies. Following feedback from events and organisers, the requirements have been updated with reference to topics such as the Stage Commander, radio requirements, Safety Car procedures and much more. The update is available in two formats. First there is a straightforward updated version of the main document. Secondly and alternatively, the updates are available as a supplementary sheet to the existing main document.

“The Stage Rally Safety Requirements are key to RallyFuture but they’re also relatively new to the sport, so we’ve listened to organisers’ feedback and made adjustments where needs be,” said the MSA’s Rob Jones. “We appreciate that this has been a challenging time for rallying and that the requirements have increased workloads for hard-pressed volunteers, but it has been very encouraging to see the sheer effort and enthusiasm they have put in to help ensure the future of the sport we all love.” 2016 Stage Rally Safety Requirements (updated) 2016 Stage Rally Safety requirements supplementary update sheet For more information click HERE to visit the RallyFuture page.

RallyFuture in brief

EXETER FORUM CONFIRMED The next RallyFuture forum will be held at the Sandy Park Conference Centre in Exeter at 7pm on 16 June. Organised in conjunction with the Association of South Western Motor Clubs (ASWMC), the forum will give delegates the opportunity to discuss stage rally safety and the future of the sport in the UK. All are welcome – to register your attendance, please email britishsprint@gmail.com. The panel in Wales will include Rallies Committee chairman Andrew Kellitt and MSA Safety Delegate Sue Sanders.

NEW TITLE PARTNER FOR WRGB International Motor Sports (IMS) has announced shortterm car insurance firm Dayinsure as a new title partner of Wales Rally GB (27-30 October). The new partnership means October’s event will be known as the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB. Company boss Dennis Ryan said: “This is a highly significant and exciting opportunity for Dayinsure. The availability of temporary vehicle insurance is something of a new concept for many in the UK and this partnership with Wales Rally GB will provide us with the perfect platform to promote not only the opportunity to take out such short-term cover but also its simplicity.” The Welsh Government remains the principal funding partner of the event, having finalised a new three-year agreement to support the rally until the end of 2018.

HYUNDAI RETURNS AS CAR PARTNER Wales Rally GB is delighted to announce that, for the third successive season, Hyundai Motor UK will partner Britain’s round of the FIA World Rally Championship. Building on the successful affiliation of the past two years, Hyundai Motor UK has been reappointed as Wales Rally GB’s Official Car Partner. The rally-winning i20 WRC car will feature prominently on the event’s promotional materials, and Hyundai Motor UK will provide a fleet of liveried vehicles for the organisation team and FIA dignitaries. “Rally sport is in Hyundai’s DNA and we are delighted to be supporting Wales Rally GB for the third consecutive year,” said Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai Motor UK’s President and CEO. “There couldn’t be a better environment for us to showcase the robustness of our road and rally products than over the tough forest rally routes of north and mid Wales in late October.”

REVAMPED BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS A SUCCESS The 28-29 May saw the return of the highly anticipated MSA British Kart Championships now powered by the brand new OK classes. The direct drive engines have brought karting back to the ‘good old days’ with the high speeds and delicate engines requiring a lot of skill and practice to master. The turnout for the event certainly exceeded everyone’s expectations with 43 drivers entered across the two classes. The who’s who of British karting were there, as the UK’s ‘elite’ drivers prepared for battle. One reason for that was the prize at stake, which is by far the biggest in British karting. An all expenses paid trip to the CIK-FIA World Championhips in Bahrain in November to race with a Vortex team. It’s a prize money can’t buy and an opportunity of a lifetime. With just three rounds ahead and all races counting towards the championship you could feel the tension in the air. What followed was some of the best racing witnessed this year. It was fierce, close, exciting and dramatic all at the same time.

Technical Updates, clarifications and advice

SNELL SAH2010 The MSA Technical Department has received new information from the FIA that Snell SAH2010 standard helmets fitted with FHR anchorage points to standard FIA 8858-2010 – and including a correct FIA 8858-2010 standard label (pictured) and hologram – are permitted for use under FIA regulations with an FIAhomologated FHR.

This does not affect competitors running under MSA National events, as the Snell SAH2010 standard alone is approved for use with an FHR in these events; however it is relevant to anybody involved with FIA International events and anybody travelling for other events overseas.

SCREAMER PIPES

FUEL TANK FILLERS Competitors are reminded of regulation (Q)19.1.1 that requires a bulkhead between the fuel tank and filler and the driver/passenger compartment sufficient to prevent the passage of flame or liquid, therefore these filler pipes would need to be covered to meet this requirement. This is often done using a metal concertina pipe to cover the fillers, and this is acceptable providing the construction of the cover is sufficient to create a flame and liquid proof seal around the pipes.

A ‘screamer pipe’ is an exhaust outlet that exhaust gasses are directed through when the turbo is at full boost, to minimise back pressure. There is no issue with this principle, however – as can be seen images below – ‘screamer pipes’ are usually arranged to exit directly from the wastegate, and often through the bonnet. Competitors are reminded that a ‘screamer pipe’ is clearly an exhaust outlet; therefore (J)5.16.6 applies, which states that all exhaust outlets must terminate behind the midpoint of the wheelbase. These examples clearly do not comply with this regulation. It would also make for an interesting noise test as (J)5.18.2 states that the noise reading is taken from each exhaust outlet and the higher reading is used, as you have probably gathered by the name these pipes are loud being effectively an unsilenced exhaust outlet!

Sign up for alerts! To sign up for email notifications when proposed regulation changes are posted online for consultation, click HERE.

Updates & Clarifications TOWING EYE The image shows a webbing loop that appears to have been added to the manufacturer’s original towing eye. If done correctly this arrangement would be OK, as webbing tow strops should be securely anchored to the main structure of the vehicle. However, the way this loop has been created by piercing the webbing with two rusty bolts is not acceptable. Loops should be created by machine stitching the webbing, in the same way as harness straps are stitched together. Piercing the webbing in this way will significantly reduce the webbing’s strength.

TOWING EYES

There have been a number of queries regarding new regulations for towing eyes, published following March’s meeting of Motor Sports Council. First, the MSA wishes to clarify that the extensive new set of regulations are a recommendation only at this stage, but are likely to mandated in due course. For those who do decide to adjust their towing eye setup, the new regulations can be distilled as follows: Minimum material strength: breaking-strain of at least 2 tons Minimum size: external loop diameter of 60mm situated 25mm forward of the adjacent bodywork, with clearance of 100 mm above and below to enable recovery crews to attach straps and shackles Two at the front and two at the rear, fixed to the chassis The length is not regulated and can be chosen to suit the vehicle The fixing point to the chassis is not specified The inner end is not specified. The above is provided for guidance only – please consult the full regulations. Any further queries can be directed to technical@msauk.org.

CORRECTION TO TYRE LIST 1A

Please note another correction to tyre list 1A regarding the Yokohama Parada Spec-2, which should have ‘PA01’ annotated in Brackets not ‘PA02’. The correct entry on the list should be as follows: Parada Spec-2 [PA01]

CAR SUITS AT KART MEETINGS

Competitors are reminded that the only acceptable overalls for use in short-circuit karting are those bearing one of the valid CIK-FIA No. 2001-1 or No. 2013-1 Level 1 or 2 homologation labels (or leather suits), examples of the acceptable labels can be found in Drawing number 11 of section (U) on page 385 of the current MSA Yearbook. www.msauk.org

HONDA GX160 IGNITION SWITCH

The MSA Technical Department has received reports of return springs being fitted to the ignition switch on Honda GX160 engines, which return the switch to the ‘on’ position when activated. The idea being that if the switch is accidentally operated whilst running on circuit it will be immediately re-engaged. Please note that this is simply not acceptable, the Honda GX160 Technical Regulations are clear on this point: “The on/off switch must be fitted and be capable of stopping the engine. A shroud may be attached to the casing to protect the switch, if required”. With a spring fitted, the switch is not going to be effective in cutting the engine as when flicked to ‘off’ it will immediately return to ‘on’, unless physically held in the ‘off’ position.

KART BUMPERS & BODYWORK

A reminder that (U)17.1.3 requires, for Junior and Senior short-circuit karts, front and side bodywork bumper bars to be from the same homologation as their associated plastic fairing or sidepod. So for clarity, the plastic sidepod and the metal side bumper must both share a common CIK-homologation number, as must the plastic front fairing and metal front bumper bars (but that may be different to the sides). All elements must remain unmodified from their homologated specification at all times. The only exception is (U)17.1.3.1, which allows alternative bumpers – with a different CIK homologation number – to be used with a plastic front fairing or sidepod, but only where they are detailed on the MSA published list. This list is now available HERE, please note that this is a live list that may be updated at any time. If a non-matching combination of homologation numbers does not appear on this list, then it simply cannot be used.

HONDA GX160 TECHNICAL REGULATIONS – UPDATE

Please be aware that the Honda GX160 Technical Regulations have been updated, to a new version 11a. This up-to-date version is available to download via the MSA website at www.msauk.org/ karttech. The updated version gives further information regarding the new exhaust (with a photo), new part numbers for carburettor jets, clarification of head gasket dimension, mention of the latest type template tool and a fuller definition of setting TDC for ignition timing check.

CIK-FIA DISMOUNTABLE FRONT FAIRING CENTRAL BLOCK

Competitors are reminded that the exemption to allow ‘unmarked’ central plastic blocks for use with the dismountable front fairing kit expires at the end of this month. So for clarity, with effect from 01 July 2016 the correct CIK-FIA homologated central plastic block must be used, which includes the “1/CA/20” marking and the directional arrow, which must be pointing upwards.

KART BODYWORK

The MSA Technical Department advises that, with all bodywork used in Junior and Senior short-circuit karting being CIK-FIA homologated, it must at all times remain unmodified. (U)17.1.2. is clear in stating that all of the bodywork components – as well as associated bumper bars and fixings – must conform to the relevant CIK-FIA homologation fiche at all times. There is an exception to this in the TKM class regulations whereby it is specifically permitted to include a hole in the sidepod for a starter (see C3.3.14 of MSA Kart Race Yearbook).

GoMotorsport Developing club motorsport for people of all ages and backgrounds

FASTLANE SHOW Members of five North East car clubs joined together to run a GoMotorsport stand and demonstration Autotest at the Fastlane Show last month (22 May). Sunny weather meant that huge crowds filled the show’s new venue, Albemarle Airfield near Newcastle.

Moore’s Month Updates from South West RDO Kevin Moore

Club members displayed a range of competition cars and a team of drivers gave passenger rides to visitors on a fast and open Autotest course. Over 200 visitors had their first taste of competitive motorsport and were given plenty of information about how to get involved in motor sport.

A journey into motorsport

Peter Metcalfe, the RDO for the North East & Cumbria coordinated the GoMotorsport activities: “The show couldn’t have gone any better and it was a real credit to everyone involved. We must make sure we now capitalise on the interest generated by using the contacts we have made.”

“The awareness of grass roots motorsports such as Autotests, Trials, Road Rallying, Sprints and Hill Climbs among enthusiast groups and classic car clubs is minimal at best.

BOURNEMOUTH AND DISTRICT CAR CLUB Bournemouth and District Car Club displayed a wide selection of member’s cars at the recent three-day Wheels Festival. Members were on hand to talk to visitors about the various opportunities to get involved with the club, including an upcoming stage rally and a slalom autotest. Visitors also had the chance to win a club membership which also allowed the club to gather contact details so that they can reach out to prospective members. Andrew Bisping, the local RDO supported the event and said, “Among the fantastic Supercars and other high-end competition vehicles at the event it was great the club could show visitors so many ways of enjoying grassroots motorsport as competitors and volunteers”

“For various reasons the motorsport message that used to be passed from father to child seems to have missed a generation over the last 30 or 40 years.

“In order to raise this awareness and encourage involvement, the ‘journey into motorsport’ needs to be more easily accessed and to appear be less ‘elitist’. “The one thing that target groups know is spectating, so my thinking is to take that concept and add value by arranging to meet a group at a suitable event and ‘walk’ them through the ‘journey’. “The group can meet at the venue around 9.30 for coffee and an introduction before being walked through the whole process of car classes and suitability, scrutineering and signing on, and an explanation of the roles of volunteers and marshals. To finish off, the group can visit a marshal post or rescue unit, leaving the rest of the day to enjoy the event with hopefully the ‘seed’ being planted. “This exercise could be something that a club promotes to local car enthusiast groups, or, if the event is an established spectator event, promotes the ‘Journey’ to spectators by offering tours throughout the day. “If this appeals to you as club or organiser and want help/guidance in moving things forward please do not hesitate to contact your local GoMotorsport Regional Development Officer. If you struggle to find their link just drop me an email and I shall put you in touch: SouthWest@GoMotorsport.net”

NATIONAL MOTORSPORT WEEK National Motorsport Week will run from 1 July – 10 July 2016 as a celebration of UK motorsport. The week kicks off with the UK round of the Formula E Championship at Battersea Park and ends with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Throughout the week motor clubs and organisations are urged to spread awareness of the importance and strength of our domestic sport and its related industry. The MIA and MSA value the role that motor clubs play in developing interest in motorsport and as a result, are awarding a £500 cash prize to the motor club that runs the best promotional campaign during NMW. For more information visit www.nationalmotorsportweek.co.uk

Bisping’s banter Updates from South RDO Andrew Bisping “Last month I visited the University of Bath Motor Club’s development evening. “The evening covered a whole range of topics including how to get involved as a volunteer or competitor and how this experience can be extremely valuable when compiling a CV or going for a job interview. “The practical exercise was the student’s favourite part of the evening. Using some Williams F1 parts two teams competed in a communication exercise. Working in pairs, back-to-back, one member had to describe a previously unseen part to a teammate to identify, with some constraints applied as in F1 radio messages. The students quickly learned that it’s important to include all the basic information such as size, weight and materials to build a picture for their team mate. “This fundamental information, as well as more specific detail, is needed in motorsport event management when there’s an incident and a marshal on scene needs to convey information back to event control to determine the correct response. It emphasised the need for clear, concise and accurate messages to achieve this aim. “The active club takes part in the BUKC karting championship with a season highlight being a fourth overall finish at the Clay Pigeon endurance round. Members have also broadened their experience by marshalling at the first round of the British Sprint Championship at Castle Combe.”

SUTTON AND CHEAM MOTOR CLUB Sutton and Cheam Motor Club’s ‘Interesting Car Night’ in Guildford offered people the chance to see an interesting range of cars, while enjoying a free barbeque and drink from the club. In return the club asked for visitor contact details so that they can email perspective members in the future. Club Chairman Ian Brooks spoke to the members and visitors about how easy it is to get involved in motorsport. He also explained how the club can help newcomers to become active participants and help support them through their early adventures in motorsport.

Academy Equipping the UK’s most promising young drivers

CO-DRIVERS TO CHESTERFIELD

National rally star Steve Perez gave five of the UK’s most promising young co-drivers a money-can’t-buy experience aboard a WRC car in Chesterfield last week. MSA Academy navigators Richard Crozier, Phil Hall, Jack Morton, Ross Whittock and Chris Williams joined programme leaders Nicky Grist and Paul Spooner for a classroom session on the complex role of a professional co-driver. They then had exclusive use of Perez’s private stage, allowing them to test their newfound knowledge and skills. First they made notes from the comfort of a road car, before climbing aboard the former BTRDA Gold Star Champion’s Ford Focus WRC and tackling the stage at speed. The co-drivers also underwent first aid training with paramedic and rally competitor Kim Baker, before a session with Sports Psychologist Andrew Cruickshank on the Psychological Characteristics for Developing Excellence. “It was great fun learning and gaining insight into how world championship teams work, and how we can implement that into our rally team,” said Whittock, who went on to score his first overall rally victory on Severn Valley Stages (4 June). The highlight

22

though was the ride in the WRC Focus with Steve and gaining an understanding of what is needed in a WRC car. Going forward it will all help me become a more professional co-driver and to progress.” Perez added: “It’s fantastic that the MSA are finding new talent and putting them through the Academy. I was very impressed with the standard of delivery and willingness to learn. I was privileged to offer some tips and advice to these stars of the future, and I’m confident that a number of them will be competing on the WRC in the coming years.”

Lynn, 22, said: “I think we had a really positive day. We ran through everything, and probably more than we ever anticipated on the programme. We’ve had a lot of good running for the team in terms of the next few races, and got some good information.” King, also 22, said: “Despite having my first taste of an F1 car in Abu Dhabi last year, driving this year’s MRT05 for the first time was just as exhilarating. As well as being an opportunity for me to get to grips with the car, it was still very much a working test for the team and I had a big programme of items to work through. All in all, I’m pretty pleased.”

Academy “We were delighted with our stage times, especially in the fog and rain as my setup worked perfectly in the bad conditions. Setting that time in Sete Cidades was one of the most enjoyable moments of my career”

TEAM UK’S RALLYING SUCCESS Team UK rally driver Chris Ingram is leading the FIA Junior European Rally Championship after an impressive second place finish on Rally Azores last weekend. The Opel works driver, and German co-driver Kat Becker, led the Junior class after setting a stunning top-10 stage time on the Sete Cidades stage, 20 seconds quicker than the next Junior crew in wet, foggy conditions. A left front puncture on day two lost Ingram 40 seconds but he fought back to finish second overall.

Fellow Team UK rally star Osian Pryce is leading the Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy after a dramatic win on round one, Rally de Portugal, last month (19-22 May).

DMACK

“A P2 on both my Tarmac and Gravel debuts in the Adam R2 gives me great confidence now to push for a victory at the next round in Ypres. We were delighted with our stage times, especially in the fog and rain as my setup worked perfectly in the bad conditions. Setting that time in Sete Cidades was one of the most enjoyable moments of my career,” said Ingram, 21. “I would like to thank my entire team and co-driver for doing a fantastic job once again, it is a brilliant start to our campaign together”

Pryce, and co-driver Dale Furniss, had looked to finish in second place after a solid and measured performance, but a dramatic crash for leader and local favourite Bernardo Sousa on the last stage gave Pryce the lead. Pryce, 23, said: “It’s awesome to be top of the podium, I really didn’t expect it. It’s a bit of a shock because we were just trying to make it round but then people were waving us down and there was Bernardo, standing at the side of the road. It’s been a tough rally but we stuck to our plan and commiserations to Bernardo as he drove really well. The next rally in Poland is really crucial as we have a good chance to extend our lead.”
