Dare to be Different: Driving Female Talent Susie Wolff and the MSA have joined forces to launch Dare To Be Different, a high-profile new initiative that will inspire, connect and celebrate women who work in every aspect of motor sport.
Launched last Thursday (14 January) at Autosport International, Dare To Be Different is about increasing female participation, not just on the track but in all aspects of the sport and other perceived male-dominated industries. It will achieve this in two key areas – creating an expansive online community, and bringing young girls (aged 8-14) together with some of the sport’s most inspiring women in a series of special events.

Dare To Be Different is not preoccupied with finding the next female F1 driver – it is about inspiring women of all ages and backgrounds to break the mould and shatter perceptions. In the coming months, a fully integrated online community will be formed across an all-new website and social channels, bringing together girls and women from all over the UK who share a passion and desire to get involved in motor racing. Susie Wolff said: “This is an ambitious and long-term project that will build an online community of women from all over the world. It will connect them through a shared passion and empower them to become the next wave of role models, whilst also providing access to some of the most successful female names in the sport. “Our UK events for young girls will boost awareness and demonstrate the varied and exciting areas of the sport – showing that they too can dare to be different.”
Our Community The Dare To Be Different network will bring women in motor sport together in an unprecedented way, with members benefitting from direct access to their peers, colleagues and even their idols for information, advice and inspiration. There will be networking events exclusively for Dare To Be Different Community members, bringing aspiring girls and women face to face with our Ambassadors. In addition there will be giveaways, competitions and other benefits. Set up as a non-profit organisation and access to the community is £25 per year. Our Events In its first year, Dare To Be Different will aim to inspire the next generation with five free special events across the UK: 13 April, Daytona Sandown Park, Surrey 5 May, Nutts Corner, Crumlin, Northern Ireland 24-26 June, The Sports Show at the NEC, Birmingham 25 August, Knockhill Circuit, Fife, Scotland 15 September, Daytona Manchester, Manchester (All dates are provisional and subject to change) These events will offer a money-can’t-buy experience to girls, and will be open to school groups as well as passionate individuals. Girls aged 8-14 will be getting tips from some of the top female racers in the world – Susie will be at every event along with an incredible team of ambassadors including current racer Alice Powell to inspire the racing spirit. The Williams F1 show car will be there for the girls to get up close and snap a selfie with, but it’s not just the driving that Dare To Be Different is here to promote.
The girls will be checking out life on the other side of the camera, as Sky Sports will be bringing a crew to showcase the opportunities in the media that come with a life in racing, plus renowned presenter Rachel Brookes will attend several events to give insider tips from the F1 media centre. In partnership with STEM, there will be activities that focus on the engineering side of racing, while the girls will also get to hear about the nutrition and fitness regimes needed to get racers to the top of their game. The events are going to be special, and start some of the next generation down the path to a career in motor sport.
Our Ambassadors Dare To Be Different Ambassadors will play a crucial role in Driving Female Talent. Claire Williams, Deputy Team Principal of Williams Martini Racing, Sky Sports’ Rachel Brookes and racer Alice Powell are all on board already and will be appearing at future events. Claire Williams said: “I am constantly inspired by the women I work with within Williams and I hope that my participation can help to spread that message. Sometimes it takes courage to pursue your dreams, Dare To Be Different will provide that encouragement and support.” Rachel Brookes said: “I always dared to be different. I am proud that I became the first woman to present live cricket updates from the boundary edge, and to host the Post Race FIA Formula One Press Conference.” Alice Powell said: “Motor sport is a male dominated sport and I have witnessed girls turn away from it because of this. I would not have had the most incredible experiences if I did not dare to be different. I always believe that you should aim high and try and better yourself. Sometimes to do that, you need to be different.” There is much more to be revealed in the coming weeks. Watch this space!

FIA President pays the MSA a visit Jean Todt, FIA President, visited the MSA stand at Autosport International after delivering the latest annual Watkins Lecture for the Motorsport Safety Fund. Todt was joined by Graham Stoker, FIA Deputy President (Sport) and former chairman of Motor Sports Council. The pair met a range of MSA staff before catching up with MSA Chief Executive Rob Jones, who talked them through all the MSA’s latest initiatives. Jones said: “For
Jean and Graham to dedicate so much time to the MSA at Autosport International is testament to our reputation as one of the leading National Sports Authorities within the FIA family. It was a pleasure to bring them up to speed with all the latest developments in UK motor sports, including everything we are doing to further enhance stage rally safety through RallyFuture – something the FIA is following with great interest.”
BWRDC GoldStars awarded at Autosport Susie Wolff announced the seventh BWRDC GoldStars winners on the Dare to be Dufferent stand at Autosport International, with Sara Williams and Elen Worthington confirmed as the Elite and Club winners respectively. The awards are decided by an independent judging panel and are designed to highlight top female racing talents looking to take the next step in their careers. As well as a very desirable collection of prizes, the winners have the added kudos of being mentored by two highly accomplished International drivers throughout the 2016 season.

McNish launches Race ‘n’ Respect across junior motorsport Sportscar legend and ex-F1 racer Allan McNish joined the MSA at Autosport International (16 January) to extend the Race ‘n’ Respect campaign across all karting, junior circuit racing and junior drag racing. Race ‘n’ Respect is a code of conduct designed to create a positive atmosphere in motor sports, on and off the track. It was trialled last year in the MSA Bambino and MSA British Cadet Kart Championships with great success. The campaign is underpinned by the Racing Code that applies not only to competitors but also to officials, organisers, parents, guardians and teams. It is based on strong values:

McNish and Jones present Bambino awards Allan McNish and MSA Chief Executive Rob Jones presented awards to the top 10 competitors in last year’s inaugural MSA Bambino Kart Championship at Autosport International. The champion, Taylor Orridge, was thrilled to win a brand new IAME-engined Cadet kart, which was displayed on
the MSA stand throughout the show. “I’m sure that there are some future stars among the current crop of Bambino competitors,” said McNish. “They should all be very proud of their achievements, but most of all as well as racing hard they enjoyed their racing. I just wish I could be their age again, starting out with a world of possibilities ahead!”
MSA selects Dunlop as the preferred supplier of Formula Cadet kart class from 2017 The MSA is pleased to confirm that it has entered into negotiations with Dunlop as the preferred supplier of tyres to the Formula Cadet kart class from 2017.
The move follows an open tender process that the MSA launched last July. The tender document required a halfsecond increase in average lap times, and extensive tests carried out by the MSA showed that Dunlop met this criterion. Rigorous testing also showed that the proposed Dunlop tyre is very durable, with minimal performance drop-off – all tyres were put through the equivalent of 500 laps of use during the testing process. Consequently one set of tyres could theoretically be used for multiple race meetings, and the environmental impact will also be reduced by limiting the number of tyres disposed of. The new tyre will be mandatory in the Formula Cadet class from 1 January 2017. It has been decided almost a year in advance to help manufacturers develop new 2017 chassis that are suited to the new tyre.

general news MSA requests nominations for CIK-FIA Trophy The MSA is seeking applications from competitors wishing to represent the UK in the 2016 CIKFIA Karting Academy Trophy, a world championship for 13- to 15-year-olds.
UCFB Launches World’s First Masters Degree in the Business of Motorsport UCFB, a world first in higher education delivering university degrees and executive education in the sport and events industries, has launched the MSc Business of Motorsport, a revolutionary new motorsport qualification supported by the MSA. Announced and showcased at Autosport International, the world exclusive one-year postgraduate programme will be delivered from within UCFB’s iconic campus inside Wembley Stadium, as well as from inspirational bases within the heart of the UK’s motorsport industry yet to be revealed. The Masters degree is aimed at enhancing the professional and career prospects of those aspiring to work in motorsport and will include modules covering Commerce; Sponsorship; Brands; Venue, Event and Safety Management within the national and international business of motorsport. Professor Philip Wilson, Provost, Chief Executive and Co-Founder of UCFB, said: “The launch of UCFB’s Masters degree in the Business of Motorsport marks an exciting expansion in our offering, addressing the requirement for highly qualified, talented and passionate individuals to step into leadership positions within this globally renowned sport. “The Motor Sports Association shares with UCFB a desire for excellence and a high level of professionalism in the way the sport is taken forward, so partnering with them on this degree came as an obvious choice. Each year the CIK-FIA invites national governing bodies to nominate competitors to represent their country. This year’s championships comprises three events: Essay, France (21-24 April); Portimao, Portugal (24-26 June); and Kristianstad, Sweden (2-4 September). The MSA pays its nomination’s entry and registration fees and the organisers provide identical equipment to all competitors. The winner of this year’s Trophy will be invited to contest the CIK-FIA World Junior Championship at Bahrain in November free of charge. The Trophy’s top five will also receive free entries to whichever 2017 CIK-FIA Championship they choose. Applicants must have been born between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2003, and hold a valid FIA Grade C Junior International Karting Licence. The FIA Women in Motorsport Commission is also offering an entry to one young female karter, so the MSA is seeking interest from competitors wishing to be considered. The successful candidate will be put forward to the FIA WiMC Steering Committee for final consideration. The same age and licence criteria apply. BRC stars at Autosport International As it prepares for its eagerly-anticipated return following a year’s break, the MSA British Rally Championship was the talk of the Autosport International show with a number of exciting announcements. M-Sport FIA World Rally Championship star Elfyn Evans and talented Finn Max Vatanen were present to launch officially the new DMACK British Rally Team in front of hordes of interested show-goers. Thursday afternoon saw the announcement of the Vauxhall Motorsport Junior Rally Team prize recipients. After initial applications, a shortlist was drawn up and a shoot-out was held to find the best three drivers from around the world to pilot a pair of R2 Vauxhall ADAMs. Irishman Robert Duggan, Swede Mattias Adielssen and Australian Arron Windus will take part in a full campaign in the DMACK Junior BRC.
British firm RallyPrep announced they will field a Toyota Motorsport GmbH-blessed GT86 CS-R3 on selected rounds in the BRC3 category. This eye-catching sportscar is set to become a firm fans’ favourite with its rear-wheel-drive, sideways antics. Finally, former European Rally Championship competitor Neil Simpson officially announced he will enter the BRC in a state-of-the-art Skoda Fabia R5. MSA BRC Manager Iain Campbell said: “The British Rally Championship stand provided a great platform for drivers and teams to announce their exciting plans for the upcoming season. To have news from so many categories shows the incredible buzz around the series which kicks off with the Mid Wales Stages on 5-6 March.”
Evans joins revamped BRC with DMACK British Rally Team FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) star Elfyn Evans is looking forward to competing on home turf this year after confirming that he will enter the revitalised MSA British Rally Championship (BRC) with the DMACK British Rally Team. Evans will join forces with another son of a famous rallying father – Finnish sensation Max Vatanen – in DMACK’s two-pronged assault, and will pilot a latest-specification Ford Fiesta R5 in the 2016 BRC, dovetailing his title challenge with his WRC2 duties for M-Sport. Elfyn said: “It’s great to be back in the BRC during a revival year which sees the championship organisers putting so much effort into getting the series back to a high level. It’s looking like a really exciting championship – proper rallies and proper organisation.”

DMACK Tyres gives Junior BRC rubber stamp of approval The organisers of the MSA British Rally Championship (BRC) are delighted to announce that the 2016 Junior BRC Champion will win a subsidised drive in the 2017 Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy worth £60,000. Thanks to the support of Carlisle-based tyre manufacturer, DMACK, the winner will begin their international rallying career on five FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) events in 2017. Open to any driver under the age of 26, the DMACK Junior BRC will be a competitive proving ground for crews as they have the chance to tackle some of the best forest stages and Tarmac tests in the British Isles in FIA-homologated R2 cars. DMACK will supply control tyres for the DMACK Junior BRC series, and the number
of tyres used per round will be restricted to keep costs to a minimum and to create a level playing field for all competitors in the class. BRC Championship Manager Iain Campbell said: “To have DMACK’s support for the Junior BRC is fantastic, not only for the championship but more importantly for the young drivers who will hope to use it as a launch pad for their careers. The winner will earn themselves an amazing opportunity to progress onto the International stage, while all the drivers and co-drivers in the Junior BRC will be supported in their development by the coaches and tutors of the MSA Academy.”
Wales Rally GB gets Channel 5 coverage Channel 5 has confirmed that it will broadcast the 2016 FIA World Rally Championship, including Wales Rally GB (27-30 October). “This is really great news for both Wales Rally GB and the vast number of dedicated rally fans here in the UK,” said Ben Taylor, Managing Director of Wales Rally GB. “Top class rallying is one of the world’s most dramatic sports and Channel 5’s commitment will allow UK viewers to follow more of the action as the WRC builds towards the legendary Welsh forests at the end of October.”

Tyre List 1B Clarification The MSA has previously highlighted an error in Tyre List 1B, whereby the specific OE fitment was missed from the Avon ZZR. That correction still stands, however in consultation with the tyre manufacturers and the Production Tyre Advisory Panel, it has been agreed to open up the use of tyres on 1B listed as ‘OE fitment only’ to all vehicles, not just those models for which the tyre is the OE fitment. Therefore for List 1B, the following tyres with the specific OE markings may be used by any vehicle where a List 1B tyre is permitted.
Helmet Modifications A scrutineer found an interesting helmet modification at a recent, whereby HANS posts were fitted to a helmet in completely the wrong location. The competitor said he also used the helmet in short oval racing, and that he uses the HANS post to attach a ‘bib’ to protect himself from stones. However this is not acceptable as a modification to the structure of the helmet – please see K10.3.3(d).

Important: Honda Cadet exhaust Please note there is a new Honda Cadet exhaust, the DEPHC1600 exhaust from DEP Pipes. This new exhaust may be used in the class with immediate effect. Importantly, from 31 March 2016 only the DEPHC1600 exhaust will be permitted in the class, and the existing Honda exhaust will cease to be eligible. When the DEPHC1600 exhaust is in use the mandatory heat shield (pictured) DEPHG16#01 must be fitted at all times.

The MSA is pleased to announce the appointment of Kate Adamson to the newly created role of Safety Director and the promotion of John Ryan to Technical Director. Both appointments follow John Symes’ retirement as Technical Director – a post in which he had responsibility for both technical and safety matters. John is remaining with the MSA as a consultant in 2016. Adamson joins the MSA from McLaren, where she spent 11 years as Head of Health, Safety and Environment. “With my passion for safety and motorsport, the role at the MSA is an exciting opportunity to which I will bring the experience and enthusiasm I was able to develop during my time with McLaren,” she said. Ryan has been an integral member of the MSA Technical Department for over 17 years, most recently as Technical Executive. He also has extensive experience of international motor sports, and currently serves as Vice President of the FIA SingleSeater Commission.
Airedale and Pennine Motor Car Club have sponsored the football kit of a local primary school. Last week (7th January) club members held a presentation at the school where the football team showed off their new kit. Two APMCC members displayed their competition cars in the playground and allowed the children to get up close with the vehicles. The white Mini of Sam Oddy proved popular, with the children surprised that there were no back seats. John Rhodes, Chairman of APMCC, said: “We were told many stories of interesting cars owned by adult relations or neighbours so some of the children knew a little about motorsport already. We hope the new kit, with a prominent APMCC logo, brings good fortune to all who wear it.”

Safety Delegate report form available online The Safety Delegate report form has been made available on the MSA website via the following link: https:// www.msauk.org/assets/ msaaccreditedmediav2. pdf This has been added so that it is readily accessible to Safety Delegates, and also to help give clubs a better understanding of what the Safety Delegate will be doing on their events. The role of Safety Delegate was created last year, giving appointed individuals overriding authority on matters of safety on all UK multi-venue stage rallies.

Drayson and Williams receive new MSA Environmental trophy Lord Drayson and Claire Williams joined MSA Chairman Alan Gow in London to formally receive the new MSA Environmental trophy and commemorate their award wins in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

Lord Drayson was the inaugural recipient in recognition of the B12/69EV, an electrical prototype racer produced by Drayson Racing Technologies, which recorded the fastest time ever achieved by an electric car on the famous Goodwood Hill: 53.91 seconds. “I was delighted and honoured to be the first recipient of the MSA Environmental Trophy, an award which underlines the importance of sustainability in modern motorsport,” said Lord Drayson. “The rapid growth in the use of hybrid and electric drivetrains over the past five years has produced exciting racing in Formula 1, at Le Mans and in Formula E and is a clear pointer to the future.” The following year Williams Hybrid Power was honoured for developing a
flywheel-based energy recovery system that not only contributed to Le Manswinning Audi sportscars but was also trialled in London buses and used by the world’s largest tram manufacturer. Claire Williams said: “Improving energy efficiency has become a key focus for Williams in recent years, particularly through our Advanced Engineering division which focuses heavily on developing new energy efficient technologies for customers. The MSA Environmental Award honoured our work in clean tech development in 2013 and we are very proud to have been a recipient. This event was a great chance to catch-up with our friends at the MSA and learn more about the environmental initiatives currently taking place in the UK motorsport industry.”

MSA launch a new online training and accreditation scheme Legendary co-driver Nicky Grist helped the Motor Sports Association (MSA) launch a new online training and accreditation scheme for rally and cross country marshals today at Autosport International. Jon Binns, Marshals’ Representative on the Motor Sports Council, said: “I wholeheartedly support what the MSA is striving to deliver with the new online marshals’ training and accreditation scheme. FAQ Why do experienced marshals have to do this?
When do all Marshals have to be registered by?
All marshals should have a common set of basic skills to protect themselves and others on the stages. This includes first-on-scene training. The MSA aims to ensure that the training is useful and relevant to everyone.
From now on, online training and accreditation will be compulsory for new/first-time rally and cross country marshals. Existing registered marshals are encouraged to complete the accreditation as soon as possible and will need to do so before renewing their 2017 registration.
What are the contents and how long does it take to do?

If a Marshal chooses not to register will he/she still be able to marshal? There will continue to be a buddying system, which will allow non-accredited marshals to join accredited volunteers on events. This will also help to ensure we don’t lose opportunities to recruit new volunteers. Lynn to continue with DAMS Team UK’s Alex Lynn will continue to race with DAMS in GP2 next season. The 22-year-old Williams development driver took two wins last year in his maiden GP2 season and finished fifth overall. Lynn said: “I improved all aspects of my driving in 2015, especially my ability to manage a race distance. I am now better prepared than ever before and ready to fight for victory. The target is to win the championship.”

Parry renews GP3 Series title bid with Koiranen GP Team UK’s Matt Parry has re-signed with Koiranen GP to chase the GP3 series title. During his debut GP3 season the Welshman scored three podium finishes Silverstone, Hungary and Bahrain – and finished eighth in the standings. Parry said: “GP3 lived up to my expectations as a very competitive series, but already knowing what each of us require should allow for a flying start once the 2016 campaign gets underway. The championship title can be my only goal and I am already looking forward to getting my head down and working towards that.”

Pryce joins Team UK Welsh rally driver Osian Pryce has been selected to join MSA Team UK after impressing coaches on a high-performance workshop in Edinburgh last year. 22-year-old Pryce finished second in the Junior World Rally Championship class on Rally Poland last year and on Wales Rally GB in 2014. For 2016 Pryce hopes to contest the Drive DMack Fiesta Trophy which involves competing in five rounds of the World Rally Championship. Team UK is a national squad of potentially elite drivers who are hand-picked to receive a bespoke one-on-one performance management programme as they progress towards the sport’s top levels. It is the pinnacle of the MSA Academy talent development pathway. Pryce said: “It’s great to join the UK’s elite drivers in Team UK. It was great to be a part of the workshop in Edinburgh at the end of 2015. I learnt a lot to put into my 2016 plans and I’ll learn more as the year goes on.”

Cookstown Students Get Revved Up with Go Mo! Students at Cookstown Primary School were all revved up last week when they received a visit from local ‹Go Motorsport› Regional Development Officer Jonathan McDonald and had the opportunity to see a rally car in their playground. Northern Ireland RDO, Jonathan, teamed up with Draperstown rally preparation firm, Camillus Bradley Motorsport, to bring a stunning Ford Escort rally car to the school. Students had the opportunity to look inside the immaculate vehicle and spot the multitude of safety enhancements contained within a purpose built competition car. MacDonald was on hand to provide additional information about motor sport as well as deliver a strong road safety message. Students were able to see a variety of motorsport parts, including a Formula 1 race seat and wheel that were once used by current Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg, as well as try on a race helmet. “It’s very important to deliver a strong safety message as well as highlight the opportunities that motor sport can provide,” MacDonald said. «Competitors always wear helmets and their seat belts for their own safety - it’s important that students remember to do the same.” MacDonald will be visiting schools and colleges across the country in 2016. “As parts of the UK come to terms with rainfall and flooding, it was wonderful to see the motorsport community in Cumbria helping each other out and contributing so much financially to those affected. “Now that some time has passed, the people in Cumbria seem to be keen to get back to business. It is well documented how much money motorsport events bring to communities especially in tourist areas over the winter. Events such as The Malcolm Wilson Rally, Northern Trial and Pirelli Rally will bring much needed income to the areas worst affected. Please support the events and the local businesses that benefit from them. “In January many often make resolutions for the New Year. Here are some suggestions: Competitors – Try and marshal more in 2016. It is great fun and seeing things from a marshal’s viewpoint will help you be more competitive. Event organisers – Invite at least one newcomer to join your team this year, it will spread the workload and bring new ideas on how to improve your event. Marshals – Bring at least one newcomer with you on an event this year. Spectators – Try to watch a new discipline of motorsport. Clubs – Try to get at least one new venue. Just because a venue was unavailable last year doesn’t mean it is this, there’s no harm in asking again!”
“There may have been some initial concern amongst competitors at the requirement to using Frontal Head Restraints from 2016. However, a crew competing in the Grant Construction Knockhill Stages at the weekend were extremely grateful of wearing their new purchases. “A dusting of snow and freezing fog had made conditions slippery with very poor visibility. Despite this, Donald Bowness and Ian Parker, out in their Vauxhall Bowyer Nova, were giving it their all. The pair, who had made the lengthy trip from Argyll, finished the first stage 17th overall from their 38th seeding. “The second stage saw the duo hit a patch of mud and then lose control with the car hitting a sturdy fence post headon. The car suffered extensive front-end damage, but both Donald and Ian escaped serious injury. “Co-driver Ian reflected on the incident. “Without the compulsory need for a Hans device, I wouldn’t have worn one. Twelve hours after the crash, I’m suffering some back pain, but I am so pleased that the new regulations have been put in place. I may not have been here to tell the tale.” “For the budget competitor, investing in the new safety devices was a substantial overhead. But, this incident just goes to show how much safer the sport is for crews. This is another great selling feature in attracting new competitors to rallying, and helping to make the sport grow.”

Over a thousand people get a taste of club motorsport at ASI Well over a thousand people got their first taste of club motorsport when Go Motorsport ran an AutoSOLO with free passenger rides at Autosport International. Almost 100 club members and volunteers came together to make the event happen. In total 1,229 show visitors signed on, with more than 2,000 passenger rides delivered over four days.
