this series is the first recognised step. “MSA Formula offers an affordable package, one which will bring toplevel single-seater racing within the budgets of a host of young driving talent. This was the world governing body’s aim when it announced its regulations for FIA Formula 4, and Ford is delighted to assist in delivering that promise. “We have competitively tendered all key elements of the championship, including chassis, engine and tyres. This offers entrants into the series the most affordable single-seat series cost and is the only championship that complies with the FIA global cost cap specified within its F4 regulations. “We are pleased to announce that we are calling on the expertise of Mygale in France with the supply of chassis. Mygale’s FIA-homologated F4 carbon fibre chassis is an impressively designed and engineered race car, and a perfect match for the race-proven 1.6L EcoBoost engine. The experience gained with EcoBoost over the last three seasons of Formula Ford racing ensures that it will be a reliable and inexpensive engine to race and maintain at optimum performance levels. Ford has a century of racing heritage and we are delighted to be involved with the next generation of racers.” Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, added: “The launch of MSA Formula is a really exciting development for UK motor racing, and for young drivers looking to establish themselves in

general news the sport. The objective is to provide young drivers with a clearly defined career path, offer global recognition and a solid foundation in racing. The affordability of the championship and alignment to global regulations will once again establish Britain as the place to come to race. Our driver development programme will offer MSA Formula drivers the best possible learning experience. I firmly believe that the MSA’s adoption of the FIA’s F4 concept makes this the clear choice for young career drivers.” The FIA Formula 4 concept is the brainchild of the FIA Single Seater Commission. Its President, Gerhard Berger, welcomed the arrival of MSA Formula as the UK variant. “FIA Formula 4 is in full expansion and our concept is in the process of establishing itself throughout the world,” he said. “We have developed a modern car, satisfying the latest safety standards while keeping in mind an effective cost control thanks to stable technical regulations. “With Formula 4, the FIA is relaunching single-seater racing on the national level and thus offering a new breeding ground for drivers, not only for Formula 1 but also for all the other top-level disciplines. “With this agreement between the MSA, Ford and the FIA, the United Kingdom will benefit from the best possible combination to ensure the perpetuity of this Formula. Being able to rely on the powerful platform of the BTCC is also an enormous plus. “All the ingredients are thus gathered together to see to it that the MSA Formula – Certified by FIA, Powered by Ford EcoBoost proves a success. It is essential for the United Kingdom, a country that places great importance on motor sport.”

Hamilton & Todt present MSA road safety film competition prizes Ten UK students enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Italian Grand Prix (6-7 September) as they met Formula One World Championship contender Lewis Hamilton and FIA President Jean Todt courtesy of Allianz UK.

Two teams of five received the top prize of £2000 for their educational establishments for their winning entries to the MSA Road Safety Film Competition – part of the FIA Action for Road Safety Campaign. Launched earlier this year, the competition challenged young people in two age categories – 14-18 and 1924 – to create short films emphasising one of the FIA’s ‘Ten Golden Rules’ of road safety. Entries were whittled down to four finalists, which were then judged by Lewis Hamilton and Sky Sports presenters Johnny Herbert and Natalie Pinkham.

The team from Hurtwood House, Surrey, was chosen in the 14-18 category for its entry ‘Melons’ which highlighted the ‘Wear a helmet on two wheels’ rule – click here to view the video. Media Studies teacher Luke Gilchrist said: “What an amazing weekend! The students really got stuck in to this project and to be rewarded for all their hard work with a prize like this – it’s just incredible.” In the 19-24 category it was the entry from Mid Kent College in Maidstone that took top honours for the film ‘Respect’, which focused on the ‘Respect the Highway Code’ golden

rule and can be viewed here. Creative Media Production Course Tutor Ross Buttery said: “Our students have been so excited about this trip and it’s been better than we could have imagined. It’s been an interesting and challenging project for everyone and to be putting the spotlight on road safety is really important.” The two winning teams enjoyed a fantastic weekend in Italy, with grandstand seats for the thrilling Grand Prix as well as a tour of the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team pit garage. 2008 F1 World Champion Hamilton

presented each team with its cash prize that will go to the media departments of the two educational establishments. FIA President Jean Todt was pleased to see the success of the MSA’s contribution to the FIA’s Action for Road Safety Campaign. “We are delighted that the MSA has joined with the FIA in this competition and it is a real pleasure to meet the winners here,” he said. “We have such a strong model in Lewis who always supports our initiatives and this kind of competition and event brings these important road safety messages alive. It is encouraging to have such prestigious partners joining the FIA to address the terrible problem of accidents we see on the roads worldwide. It has been a huge success.” Hamilton has been an avid supporter of the competition since its inception, and said: “It’s fantastic to meet the people behind the winning videos. These guys inspired me so I’m sure they will have inspired the thousands of people that have watched them. Road safety is a hugely important subject and it has been great to see how people can educate others in a fun and engaging way. I hope they all enjoy a weekend

to remember here in Monza - a richly deserved prize for all their efforts.” MSA Chief Executive Rob Jones was also part of the prize presentations at the historic Italian Grand Prix venue. “It’s been a pleasure to meet the students from Hurtwood House and Mid Kent College, and to join the presentation of their prize cheques with Lewis Hamilton and Jean Todt here at Monza,” said Jones. “They are all very impressive young people who clearly put a lot of effort into their winning films, and it was fantastic to see them bring the important message of road safety to life in such creative ways. “I would also like to thank Sky Sports F1 for their backing, and of course Allianz for so generously providing such an incredible prize trip to the Italian Grand Prix.”

Ilott and Ahmed claim European kart titles UK motor sport celebrated a new pair of international champions when Callum Ilott and Enaam Ahmed claimed the CIKFIA KF and KF-Junior Kart titles respectively at Lincolnshire’s PF International circuit last month. Ilott, aged 15 from Hertfordshire, won the first KF round in Italy and took second next time out in Belgium. In the final round at PFI he took control in the Qualifying Heats before winning the Prefinal and ultimately the Final – ahead of title rival Nicklas Nielsen from Denmark – to be crowned champion. In KF-Junior Ahmed, aged 14 from London, was a preevent favourite, and delivered on that promise by winning the Prefinal and Final with speed to spare. Russian Alexander Vartanyan took second ahead of another Brit, Max Fewtrell, who completed the podium. Witnessing Ilott and Ahmend’s triumphs were MSA Chief Executive Rob Jones, MSA Kart Executive Cheryl Lynch and MSA Technical Executive John Ryan. Former karter, F1 driver and sportscar great Allan McNish was also at PFI to watch the action and present trophies. Jones said: “After a fantastic weekend’s motor sport at PFI I would like to congratulate Callum and Enaam, who continue Britain’s long run of success in international karting with the KF and KF-Junior European titles. “I would also like to pay tribute to all the other British karters who took part, and to thank Trent Valley Kart Club for organising such a superb meeting in conjunction with the CIK-FIA. With great racing at a fantastic venue and a pair of British winners, this was truly an occasion of which UK motor sport can be proud.”

IMS and ABIRO agree way forward for 2016 MSA BRC

MSA NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2014

WOMEN IN MOTORSPORT

A BRC working group will be created as soon as possible to consider the key issues to be resolved around the revised championship, including vehicles, class structure and the status of events. It is anticipated that further announcements will be made in due course and the group has set a target to resolve all major points before the end of the year to give competitors the earliest possible indications of the future direction of Britain’s premier rally championship. Ben Taylor, IMS Managing Director, said: “It was a very positive discussion about the future of the championship and what is clear is that we all share a desire to see the BRC as the pinnacle of the British rallying scene. We have undertaken to work together in the coming months to achieve as soon as possible a clear idea of what the 2016 championship will look like. With the knowledge and experience around that table, backed by the commitment of IMS and the MSA to make it successful, we can all be excited about the prospects for the BRC.” Rick Smith, Event Director, Rallye Dorset, added: “For all parties associated with the BRC, the last few weeks have been challenging; organisers, competitors, teams, sponsors, officials and spectators have all been concerned in different ways for the future of what is - and must be - the best championship in the UK. Our discussions with MSA and IMS have now given us confidence that the voices of those who can contribute most to the exciting plans for the future will be heard in the correct forum.”

David DJ Jones

Following a constructive meeting at Motor Sports House, the Association of British International Rally Organisers (ABIRO) and International Motor Sports (IMS) have agreed to work together to formulate plans for the relaunch of the MSA British Rally Championship in 2016.

Morrison takes BRC Challenge title Emma Morrison has been crowned the 2015 NGK Spark Plugs BRC Challenge co-drivers’ champion after navigating Richard Sykes aboard a Citroen C2R2. “This year has really been full of highs and lows for us all,” she said. “However I have finished on a definite high. After a perfect start to the season with wins on the Pirelli and Jim Clark rallies we had the ultimate low of crashing out of the Scottish whilst holding a 30-second lead. Then although we took the win in Ulster that is one I will never celebrate. “So it was going to be winner-takes-all on the Isle of Man. Crossing the finish line in second meant that I took the co-driver’s championship, with my driver Richard one point behind in second place.”

Rewards for WRGB volunteers New initiatives will seek to reward clubs and volunteers supporting this year’s Wales Rally GB, the final round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Event organiser International Motor Sports (IMS), the MSA’s commercial subsidiary, will give a pair of 2015 WRGB Guest Passes to every club that supplies more than 20 people to help with the rally. There will also be a cash prize of £500 to the ‘best turned out club’ during the event. This year marshals will again receive an event programme plus a different gift for each day attended, and all marshals are invited to enjoy the atmosphere at Deeside Service Park, where IMS will provide food vouchers. At the end of the weekend, there will be a prize draw giving all signed-on volunteer marshals and officials the chance to win a trip for two to a European WRC rally of their choice in 2015. Ben Taylor, IMS Managing Director, said: “Since taking over this position, I have been overwhelmed by the number of people and the level of commitment that goes into making the event happen. It reminds me that Wales Rally GB is not IMS’s event; it is the showpiece event for the whole of British motor sport. To find out how to marshal on WRGB, visit www.walesrallygb.com/marshals

“The organisation on of a major WRC event now has many demands that determine how we put the rally together, but nonetheless there has to be scope to make everyone feel involved and appreciated for their efforts.”

Engaging with education

STEM at WRGB

Schools and colleges throughout Wales will maximise the presence of the WRC in the Principality this November (13-16) through a number of initiatives including competitions, exhibitions and events.

The WRGB Service Park will host a twoday Industry Awareness STEM Event (13-14 November) aimed at giving students an exciting and memorable experience that will inspire and motivate them to continue with the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

The Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) is running two special competitions on behalf of the Welsh Government. Both are open to all secondary schools and colleges in Wales, with entry categories for Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 year groups. The first competition requires students to design an item of WRGB merchandise, with the winning entry being brought to life by Performance Clothing. The second asks students to design the livery for a Welsh rally car entering the event; the livery should include a special graphic for the car’s roof vent. The winner will be applied to Elfyn Evans’ M-Sport World Rally Team Ford Fiesta RS WRC in place of his usual Welsh flag. “It’s great to see Wales Rally GB engaging with local schools and encouraging the younger generation to get involved in our great sport,” said Evans. “I can’t wait to see all of the different ideas and it will be a real pleasure to sport the winning design on the roof of my Ford Fiesta RS WRC. Here’s hoping it pushes us to a fantastic performance on home soil.” Entry forms, design templates and further details can be downloaded from the www.stemcymru.org.uk website and the closing date is Friday 26 September. The winners will be invited as VIPs to the Wales Rally GB central Service Park in Deeside to receive their prizes.

Organised by the Welsh Government, the event has lined up around 35 exhibitors to provide interactive activities for visitors as well as tours of the top WRC teams, the adjoining Toyota Engine Plant and two other local companies: UPM Shotton Paper and DRB, the integrated engineering group. In total around 1000 students are expected to visit this special STEM event, which will showcase some 35 exhibitors including Airbus, JCB, the MSA’s Go Motorsport campaign and the remarkable Bloodhound SSC Supersonic Car project. Wales already has strong educational links with the Bloodhound team through Swansea University’s world-class work on computer fluid dynamics (CFD), which is right at the heart of research on the design and aerodynamics of the 1000mph car.

MSA NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2014

TECHNICAL / SPORTING REGULATIONS ROPS and harness mountings MSA Yearbook regulation (K)1.3.2. requires the Roll Over Protection System (ROPS) mounting foot to be attached “… on a steel reinforcement plate at least 3mm thick and of at least 120cm2 area which is welded to the body shell (see drawings K13 to K18).” The reinforcement plate pictured may well meet the 120cm2 requirement – and from the photo does appear to be at least 3mm thick – but it is clearly not welded to the body shell and does not follow any of the principles shown in drawings K13 to K18.

As can be seen, the harness is mounted to the same bolted-in reinforcement plate by way of an eye-bolt. It is quite possible that in isolation this installation meets the requirements of the MSA Yearbook, in particular drawing K40 – although it is not clear that there is the required washer in place, and it is impossible to know from the photo whether the nut on the reverse is held captive to prevent rotation. However, the harness should be mounted to a structural part of the car – and looking at the bigger picture it clearly isn’t. (K)1.3.1 states that the “…vertical part of the main rollbar must be as straight as possible and as close as possible to the interior contour of the bodyshell.”. While not being able to see what is happening further up the B-pillar, from the photo it would appear that the main rollbar is not as close as possible to the interior contour of the bodyshell.

Silencing requirements Regarding silencing, the MSA Yearbook regulations are clear in that (J)5.17.7 states: “Temporary silencers, by pass pipes or the inclusion of temporary parts to achieve silencing requirements are prohibited. Officials may refuse to carry out Sound Checks on vehicles using temporary parts in exhaust systems. Organisers are empowered to exclude in such situations.”

The relevant MSA Yearbook regulation is clear; (K)10.3.3(d) states that “… Fitment of cameras to helmets by whatever means is not permitted unless an integral camera is provided by the helmet manufacturer and that model of helmet is approved under one of the accepted standards.” Therefore an attachment such as this is not acceptable for any MSA-authorised activity where a helmet is mandatory.

Fire extinguishers Competitors are reminded that hand-held fire extinguishers must be accessible, as per regulation (K)3.1.4, which requires a “…Medium Hand Held [extinguisher], for Driver or Rally Codriver use.”

Reportedly, in the example pictured each drinks can was stuffed with wire wool and then lock wired to each silencer!

Helmet-mounted cameras The image shows a mounting bracket attached to a helmet, which is apparently designed to accept a GoPro camera. This was presented for preevent scrutineering at an event recently.

Note the location of the hand-held extinguisher in the image. The reality is that the co-driver in the seat directly in front of the extinguisher is not going to be able to access it, and neither is the driver in the right-hand seat. Remember too that the operation of the plumbed-in extinguisher system must be achievable by both crew members when normally seated and with harnesses fastened (see (R)48.10.5), as is the case for the internal isolating switch (see (R)48.10.2).

Performance Master Classes The Performance Master Classes have continued apace over the last few weeks, beginning with an anti-doping delivery for Super One TKM karters at Rissington, led by MSA Coach Adam Gould. On the same weekend, Duncan Tappy and James Wozencroft were at Silverstone, coaching BRDC F4 competitors – particularly those enrolled on the MSA Academy talent development pathway. Gould continued working with Super One a week later, this time joined by fellow coach Rupert Svendsen-Cook to give Rotax competitors one-on-one coaching as well as the anti-doping education.

Fergus Mumford @FergusM_ SportPC Aug 27 Good catch up day complete with @MSAAcademy at Loughborough. Now in Grantham getting ready for a weekends work in European karting at PF Tom Jackson @TJacksonR Aug 27 Another day up at Loughborough for the @MSAAcademy. Early start and late finish today! Sam Brabham @SamBrabs Aug 22 Really good day at Porsche with the @MSAAcademy lots learnt and some interesting training tests completed

The following day Gould headed down to Lydden Hill, where junior rallycross was in action. In the morning he led a group discussion about the importance of fitness, before turning attention to anti-doping. For the rest of the day he worked with the drivers individually on their driving technique in the tricky wet weather conditions. Gould’s next stop was Glan-Y-Gors and Trawsfynydd with the Junior Rally UK drivers. He gave a theoretical technical driving presentation, and antidoping workshop and a group discussion about the drivers’ options after junior rallying. Gould also coached the competitors on pacenote making skills and driving feedback. Svendsen-Cook was back in action at Rockingham for the Formula Ford and Ginetta Junior Championships. In addition do one-on-one driver support, he facilitated a group talk with the FFord racers about debriefing and analysing race weekends, including how best to support their engineers. Both championships were educated in anti-doping. Finally Phil Glew was at PF International kart circuit last weekend (13-14 September) to talk to Super One competitors and their parents about how they can best achieve their goals in motor sport. Discussions were based around future championships, sponsorship and coaching to develope their long-term skilles.

Another points finish for rising star Evans Team UK members and FIA World Rally Championship (ERC) driver Elfyn Evans continued his impressive debut season with another solid performance on Rally Australia. On their first visit to the Australian stages, Evans and codriver Daniel Barritt secured more points with an eighth place finish after taking a risk-free approach. “Our objective wasn’t to show speed here this weekend,” said Evans, 25. “It was all about learning the stages and the environment. Even though it was a little frustrating at times, I think we managed to do that. “I think we showed some good pace and the driving felt a lot more natural and better than it had been previously. We’ve learnt the stages and got a good set of notes so I think we’re in a position to come back much stronger next year. These stages are amazing and I can’t wait to come back and drive them at full speed.”

Lynn takes step closer to title Team UK’s Alex Lynn has one hand on the GP3 trophy following the latest round at Monza, where he took second and sixth place finishes. Twenty-one-year-old Lynn’s chances of a win were hampered by an inopportune yellow flag in qualifying; he was up on Jimmy Eriksson’s pole time until reaching the final corner, where Alex Fonatana had crashed, forcing him to slow down and leaving him sixth on the grid. Eriksson won the first race with Lynn five places back, but the Essex racer followed fellow Briton Dean Stoneman across the line in race two for second place. “With my main points rival Richie Stanaway having a tough weekend that’s given me a 50-point lead going into the final two rounds,” said Lynn. “There are 48 available at each round, so if I’ve got the same advantage at the end of the next round in Russia then I’m champion!”

Harvey misses Indy Lights title by a whisker Racing Steps Foundation’s Jack Harvey lost the Indy Lights title by the narrowest of margins, tying on points and wins with Gabby Chaves but missing out on count-back of second places. Championship rookie Harvey finished the season in style, with a brace of pole positions and race wins in the season finale at Sonoma Raceway. His endof-season tally was five wins and 10 podiums out of a possible 14.

“To miss out on the championship by such a tiny margin is gutting,” said 21-year-old Harvey. “However, it has still been the most unbelievable season. I want to say a huge thank you to the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team. They have worked so hard all season and this result is for the whole team. I also want to say a massive thank you to the Racing Steps Foundation for their continued support. Without them I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

MSA NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2014

GoMo promotes club motor sport at TRAX Go Motorsport joined Wales Rally GB organisers at Silverstone earlier this month for the TRAX Show, displaying 19 cars representing various types and levels of motor sport that people can get involved in.

GoMo success at Santa Pod Fun Day The second Santa Pod Junior Drag Racing Fun Day attracted over 4,000 people to the UK’s premier drag racing venue, where Go Motorsport ran a Production Car Autotest taster event in conjunction with Loughborough Car Club. The main event featured over 40 junior drag racers taking to the drag strip, which also hosted demonstration runs by a top fuel dragster and Lightning McQueen. Go Motorsport and Loughborough CC took the opportunity to showcase club motor sport with free passenger rides in a range of cars, with local Go Motorsport RDO Richard Egger coordinating the drivers. “Passenger rides are a great way of taking club motor sport to new audiences and highlight that you don’t have to spend huge amounts to have a lot of fun on four wheels,” said Egger. “The visitors all went away with smiles on their faces and information on where their local clubs are based.” Hunts Kart Racing Club was also on hand with a static display to promote local karting and give hundreds of visitors the chance to try some karts for size. Martin Chesterman and his team manned the stand and were overwhelmed with visitors all day long. “We all thoroughly enjoyed the day and most of the questions were based around what age I can start karting, where I can do this and what the best steps to take are,” said Chesterman. “HKRC successfully attracted spectators who may then consider becoming a competitor. The biggest surprise was to have a queue of youngsters, both boys and girls and later parents who would sit in the kart and have their photo taken.” The event raised funds for local charity Niamh’s Next Step, founded in memory of Wellingborough youngster Niamh Curry to help combat neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer. Voluntary donations raised £1,750 and funds have continued to pour in after the event.

Sprint and hill climb, circuit racing, sporting trials, car trials, road rallying, rallyings, autocross, autosolos and volunteer rescue were all represented on the day. All the volunteers manning the stand were impressed with the number of visitors who came to have a look. Kevin Moore, Go Motorsport’s South West RDO, oversaw the stand was thrilled with how many people were genuinely interested in getting involved. “TRAX performance car show provided us with an opportunity to demonstrate the theory of going to events that fall outside of the ‘normal box’ in terms of promoting the clubs and the sport and this has proven to be really valuable,” he said. A number of drift clubs attended and some of their members showed an interest in getting involved in club level motor sport. “Many of the drifters are looking to work with their local club that run AutoSOLOs with a view to involve the drifters in the club life,” said Moore. “Being at the TRAX show has once again shown that working with the new trends is a key way to engage new people in our events.” Go Motorsport would like to thank all of those who volunteered to bring along vehicles and speak to the public about their respective sports; their help is very much appreciated and it is fantastic that so many clubs and individual competitors are so enthusiastic about expanding the reach of grassroots motor sport. Clubs represented on the day were: 750 Motor Club, BTRDA, Cannock and District Motor Club, Owen Motoring Club, Shenstone and District Motor Club, South Hams Motor Club and Witney Motor Club.

Moore’s Month Updates from South West RDO Kevin Moore Following on from one of my themes last month, it was great to see North Devon Motor Club taking advantage of not just one but two promotional opportunities. The first was a club stand at the North Devon Show, a regional agricultural/ country fair. I have long pushed these types of events as being the perfect place to promote motor sport. The key advantages are that the display will almost certainly be unique within the concept of the show, and also by the nature of the event a significant percentage of visitors will be landowners, which offers a good opportunity to secure new venues if approached sensitively and responsibly. The second was that the motor club ran a live action hill climb-style event within permitted guidelines agreed with the MSA. This event was organised as an attraction within the Castle Hill Car Festival held near South Molton in North Devon. The show was organised by a third-party events company along the lines of a miniature version of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The spectacle of these live action sideshows are a fantastic draw of the public’s attention, making them an ideal marketing tool for the organising motor club. If your club would like to organise a similar live action event and you have any queries, please contact your Go Motorsport Regional Development Officer (RDO) for guidance/ assistance. It is essential when running these events at non-established motor sport venues that the proposal is put to the MSA (directly or through your regional Go Motorsport representative) to ensure regulations regarding track licences etc. are not breached. In my experience, club promotion at such events nearly always generates serious enquiries about membership and offers further unexpected benefits for the motor club(s) involved, while also being a valuable PR exercise in raising local awareness and recognition of our sport. North Devon Motor Club confirmed this to be the case, with a healthy number of enquiries about the club’s activities and how to get involved. Any motor clubs wanting advice on promotion should contact their local Go Motorsport RDO; there is a contact list on the www.gomotorsport.net website. South West Motor Clubs can email me directly on southwest@gomotorsport.net for further info.

MSA NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2014

Emergency services get a taste of club motor sport The Emergency Services Show at Hullavington Airfield featured a new addition for 2014, with Go Motorsport running an Autotest giving show-goers the chance to ride alongside an experienced driver.

Displays, competitions and school visits north of the border In addition to compelling track action, the busiest ever BTCC round at Knockhill offered the chance for one lucky spectator to experience the thrill of co-driving, courtesy of Go Motorsport. Scotland RDO Alison Clark organised a competition for the chance to navigate 2013 MSA Scottish Rally Championship runner-up Quintin Milne, whose driving style has made him hugely popular with rally fans. His MkII Escort ensured a steady stream of entrants all weekend, and Kockhill FM commentator Ian Ttichmarsh drew local lady Lauren Dryburgh’s name from the entries. Glenrothes Motor Sport Club donated a free entry to its Kindgom Stages Rally at Crail Airfield on 1 November for Mile and Dryburgh, who was celebrating her 24th birthday; she had got her BTCC ticket as a birthday present and was thrilled that her motor sport experience would continue. The Go Motorsport stand was also supported by Forfar-based 750 Motor Club, which displayed a modified budget autotest Mini and attracted lots of interest from passing fans. Representatives from the Brick And Steel Junior 1000 Ecosse Challenge were also on hand with two junior cars. 750 MC’s Daniel Rae said: “I would like to thank Go Motorsport for giving us the opportunity to take two cars to Knockhill and promote the club. We thoroughly enjoyed the event and had lots of people approach us. Hopefully we will get a few members for our club and also get people involved in car clubs closer to them.” Clark made the most of her time in Fife by visiting nearby Warout and Carleton schools with Matt Reid and Brandon Walsh’s rally cars, which the pupils explored after a classroom presentation. Warout teacher Diane Jones, a scrutineer, said: “The children couldn’t stop talking about what happened that morning and were very excited all afternoon too. I think it is an invaluable programme in schools and will hopefully encourage some youngsters into motor sport.”

P20

Show organisers also provided cars for visitors to have a go themselves on a second course under a tester event permit. Local Go Motorsport RDO Andrew Bisping enlisted the help of local clubs Devizes and District MC and Bath MC – plus fellow RDO Suze Endean – to run the event. All were kept busy during peak times with a constant flow of visitors. The squeal of tyres and beaming faces as visitors got out of cars proved very rewarding, as did the number of prospective new club members. The fastest public driver was Tim Hunter from Manchester, with a time an experienced competitor would have been pleased with. Chris Harvey, chairman of the Organising Committee, said: “The Emergency Services attend many road traffic collisions, so it was great to bring entry level motor sport into this year’s show. The hope is that people can see how they can have fun in a safe, well managed environment, away from the public roads.” Bisping added: “It was great being able to take club motor sport outside our normal environment to a new audience. On a glorious sunny day I understand there are hopes the event may break the £25,000 record collected for the show charities and I’m pleased we’ve contributed to that through our event.”

Newcomers’ Corner As part of the MSA’s Year of the Newcomer, the Newcomer’s Prize Draw is running for a second year, offering a pair of tickets to Wales Rally GB. Anyone who has started out in motor sport either as a competitor or volunteer since January 2013 is eligible to enter. Jess Fack, MSA Development Manager, said: “All you have to do is send us an account of your first experiences in motor sport, explaining how you felt, what you did and how you got on, preferably along with a picture of you in action.” Entries should run to no more than 500 words and must be emailed to newcomer@ gomotorsport.net by 30 September 2014. Entries may also feature in future editions of this newsletter. Here is the first of the entries received so far…

Louise Anderson, aged 48 from Leicester Motorsport? F1 and TT racing. Tulips? I have some of those in my garden. That would have been my response if you asked me those questions in November. Now I know different! I have been introduced to the world of local motor sport. My new partner, an experienced navigator, asked if I wanted to join him in a PCA being run by the local car clubs. ‘You just have to drive the car through some cones as quickly as possible’. What did I have to lose? We turned up at Donington Park very early on a sunny Saturday morning, going in through the Competitors Entrance in a borrowed Sierra (from someone I had never even met – that is kindness and trust!). I got into the driver’s seat to get a feel for the car. To say I was now feeling nervous is a definite understatement. We pulled up to the designated area and were warmly greeted by the organisers and other competitors. After scrutineering (which needed explaining to me) and drivers’ briefing (which made me feel very important!), and walking the course, we waited patiently for my first go. The adrenaline was unreal; my heart was pounding and I could easily have got out of the car and walked away. But I tightened the

harness, took a deep breath and was counted down. I drove at what I thought was breakneck speed through the cones and crossed the finished line. I was then very eager to have my next go! After three goes it was then my turn to be in the passenger seat – then I realised that my driving was more like that of a Sunday driver. Being a passenger (oh, and supposedly a ‘navigator’) was a fantastic experience – being flung around, I crossed the line with the biggest smile on my face, which stayed for the rest of the day. I came last but that didn’t matter; the most important thing was that I had a new experience and met a great bunch of warm and dedicated people, who didn’t judge me on my age or sex but were just pleased that someone else has enjoyed the experiences of motor sport. Since then I have taken part in two more PCAs, a grass autotest (which turned out to be more of a mud test), navigated on a Classic Car Run – the National Drive It Day – marshalled a ‘stop/go’ on the Flying Scotsman Rally and navigated in an Easylarity Road Rally. I may not be top at competing and navigating (yet!) but I take part and enjoy being a member of such a welcoming community. And hey, not everyone can come first!

Go Motorsport Live! East Over 1,100 people have now registered for Go Motorsport Live! – East at Snetterton Circuit on 19 October. Following the success of Go Motorsport Live! at Silverstone event last summer, the Association of Eastern Motor Clubs (AEMC) and Go Motorsport have taken up the baton and are preparing for what promises to be a great day showcasing all things motor sport. The event is designed to showcase volunteering and competing opportunities, and to demonstrate what the sport can offer those on a tight budget. The day will encompass live demonstrations of various disciplines and rescue crews, while passenger rides in an all-forwards Production Car Autotest will allow show-goers to experience club level motor sport for free. “Taking motor sport to the public is proving to be a successful means of generating interest in the sport away from its traditional events,” said Go Motorsport RDO Suze Endean. “There are huge numbers of people who love cars and the thought of being involved in the sport but don’t realise how easy it is to do so. If you are interested in being a part of the day, please contact info@gomotorsport.net for further information.” Anyone wishing to visit Go Motorsport Live! – East can register for their free ticket at www.gomotorsport.net . Why not encourage your friends or colleagues to go along and find out how they can get involved too?
