My short-lived aspiration to play trumpet didn’t make it out of secondary school. Mostly because – as my longsuffering parents can attest to, having endured me practicing at home – I was pretty awful. My ability to tap out a tune on the keyboard also doesn’t extend beyond Twinkle Twinkle. Although if you ask my one-year-old nephew, that’s all you need anyway. And as Team What’s On can affirm after our karaoke night a few months ago, there’s no chance I’ll be securing a record deal anytime soon.
I’m not very sporty either. My lack of hand-eye co-ordination, displeasure at being cold, and limited stamina meant I was always picked last for team sports at school. I go to the gym because I have to, not because I want to. And as much as I’d like to be as enthusiastic as my colleague Miles has become about running, I’m afraid this probably isn’t going to be the year I start half-marathons (2025 will be my year, maybe).
But one thing I will say, is I’m willing to give anything a go – despite how far it might send me out of my comfort zone. I’ve wet-suitted up to swim with sharks, strapped myself into a harness and ziplined off a building in Dubai Marina, and rock climbed across mountains, despite having a fear of heights. And whether you’re learning a new skill or getting a new thrill, this issue we’re inviting you to step outside of your comfort zone, too. I love spending time at the home I’ve created. But if I had to pick my favourite staycation, it would be the Park Hyatt Dubai. It’s one of my favourite hotels in Dubai because of the architecture, the facilities, and the sanctuary being by the Dubai Creek waterfront, which is one of the most underestimated spots in the city.

I truly believe there is no bad time to take a walk around the neighbourhoods in Satwa. If you wander around the back alleys and in between the houses, you will find not only some of the most interesting architecture in the city but also shops and little secrets within every corner.

Aside from visiting Alserkal Avenue and coming to Cinema Akil, I think everyone should experience spending time in the desert, especially if you have friends who are from town and know their way around. Everyone brings food and you start a bonfire, which is a beautiful way to appreciate how close the city is to nature.
A family favourite restaurant that I have been going to for decades now is Shabestan at the Radisson Blu in Deira. The experience is best accompanied by a walk around the neighbourhood and on the creek before heading for a hearty Iranian meal.
When the weather is nice, walking in the UAE is underestimated. One of my favourite walks is along the beach near the Mandarin Oriental. In that area, you can find what I like to call ‘neighbourhood beaches’ –patches of public coastline with connected boardwalks where you can easily wander for a few hours.
In Deira, near the Somali Mosque, there’s a street, almost like a strip, that has some of the best Ethiopian coffee shops, eateries, and braiding spots. This was a really cool find because it’s not only amazing coffee but also super cute and charming stores within the old shopping area of Dubai.

A long-standing ally of regional creative talent, What’s On has supported the annual Art Dubai festival since its inception in 2006. Dubai’s biggest art festival, which takes place each March, has been celebrated on the cover of several issues of What’s On A couple of highlights have included a graffiti version of the Burj Al Arab in 2013, and a recreation of Andy Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans in 2015. But the March 2016 cover, our 455th issue, was a particularly poignant dual-themed cover, which coincided with the annual art extravaganza’s 10-year anniversary.
The Banksy-inspired visual firstly marked a decade of Art Dubai, which that year saw the works of 500 artists from 70 nationalities displayed. The multi-dimensional festival combines galleries with exhibitions, talks and interactive experiences to leave even the most entry level of art enthusiasts inspired. Our guide to this year’s festival can be found on p57. But the lance-yielding delivery driver emblazoned onto a wall in the artsy Jumeirah neighbourhood also gave a nod to another feature from the March 2016 issue, the battle of the food deliveries.
Always keen to be at the forefront of culinary trends in the city, What’s On put the most prominent food delivery companies at the
time through their paces with an anonymous take-out test, to see which would come out on top.
Fast forward eight years, and the rise of Dubai’s food delivery services has only contributed to the city’s footprint on the global culinary map. The Dubai Gastronomy Industry Report, published by Dubai Economy and Tourism (DET) last month, highlighted just how astronomically this sector has accelerated. In 2023, food deliveries accounting for a staggering 87 per cent of all online purchases made by residents in Dubai. Increasingly sophisticated ordering apps, paired with the enhanced accessibility thanks to innovative cloud kitchens, have brought the world’s flavours to our doorsteps at the touch of a button. You can give your stomach a more pragmatic away day with an advanced course of desert motoring via the Emirates Driving Institute. That’s what they say, isn’t it? It’s not a universal truth; sometimes antibiotics make more sense, but when it comes to existential ennui or maladies of the mind, stand-up comedy gets to the site of pain, fast. And there’s no better place in the UAE to watch people on stage saying funny things, live and relatively uncensored – than at The Selfdrive Laughter Factory. The trio for March shows will include local legend Abz Ali, as well a Ukranian-Russian stand up, Dimitri Bakanov. What could possibly go wrong?

“Everyone says I should be on the stage”. Prove it. The Courtyard Playhouse in Al Quoz has been providing a platform for the dramatic arts since 2013, and in between their own ovation-courting performances, comedy nights and National Theatre Live screenings – they offer a range of workshops for kids and adults, including improv. And whilst it might not be technically possible to teach spontaneous creativity, the improvisation maestros at Courtyard can arm you with a humourist’s tool kit for stitching together hilarious hypotheticals from the loose end of whoever’s line it is anyway.

For those that enjoy their food with a side of thermonuclear fallout, there are now a few places in Dubai where you can dance with the (Carolina) Reaper, one of the hottest chilli peppers on earth (shout out to Dave’s Hot Chicken). But if you want to go head-to-head with one of the city’s most fearsome Hot Ones, make your way to one of the Buffalo Wings and Rings outlets. Ask any toddler, there’s something innately human about drawing on walls. Early human cave paintings are almost certainly the oldest surviving examples of homo sapiens ‘doing art’, and whilst it hasn’t dimmed in popularity in the intervening years, it has generally become less socially acceptable to manifest your murals in public spaces. Emirates Park Zoo has an incredibly diverse population of animal inhabitants, some of them cuddly, some of them decidedly less so. Before you take on three dimensions of on-wheel locomotion, it’s generally advised to have a grasp of the basics. Do a quick Google search for bike rides in Dubai and nearly all the results will point you to Al Qudra, and for good reason. This cycling haven is serene, car-free, and unfolds against a backdrop of stunning desert landscapes. While early birds swear by the unmatched beauty of a sunrise ride, the sunsets are equally enchanting. Located in Downtown Dubai, Salvaje is a recent addition to the thriving dining scene in the heart of Dubai. Found a stone’s throw away from Dubai Opera, Salvaje almost feels hidden in plain sight, but when you spot it, you’ll wonder how you missed it.
The brand has conquered such culinary hotspots as Madrid, Miami, Barcelona and Paris, and now the curtain has raised on its Dubai performance. The name ‘Salvaje’ comes from Spanish for ‘wild’ and looking around the venue, it all clicks vibrant colours, tropical-inspired patterns, huge gorilla and rhino statues and more animalistic designs dot the venue, all blended together with Japanese touches.
But the wild side doesn’t stop at the decor. The restaurant comes alive at night with dancers decked in eye-catching cabaret costumes and feathery head pieces. Dancing amidst the tables, you can’t help but down your cutlery and dance in your seat. On other nights, we’ve been told to expect fire dancers – just another reason why the spot is a popular choice amongst celebrities.
We begin our night with sips and the presentation is appropriately fierce. Seaside (Dhs95) is a chemistry experiment unfolding in front of our eyes complete with flasks, a beaker stand, and dry ice. It comes with an oyster which enhances the flavours of the sea as you sip your drink. Not all cocktails are given this eye-catching theatrical touch, but the care put into presentation is clear.
The menu at Salvaje proudly waves the flag of two cultures – Latin America and Japan, with culinary practices that honour both cuisines, but a distinct dish bias of the latter. For starters, the ISLVJ salad (Dhs65) is worth your attention, creamy avocado and a sweet miso sauce, the ensemble rumbled with a flavour so good we went back for seconds. The rock shrimp tempura (Dhs112) by contrast was a fraction too subtle for our particular palate and we were left wishing the dip had a stronger wasabi hit.

As the hours roll by, the music gets louder, and the vibes get wilder. We stay for just one more dance making a mental note to return on other nights to see the other performances – possibly drinks and bites pre our next Dubai Opera performance.

There are few places in Dubai – or in the world for that matter – that can compete with the grandeur of Atlantis The Royal. Home to 90 swimming pools, a record-breaking fire and water fountain, and 17 world-class restaurants, the hotel is a playground for the rich and famous. In fact, within months of opening, the hotel has hosted the likes of Beyoncé, Kanye West, Novak Djokovic, Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez, and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Up on the 22nd floor, sits one of the city’s most sought-after retreats: Cloud 22. The sparkling 90-metre infinity pool opened to the public in December 2023. And, just like everything else at this ultra-luxury venue, it comes with a hefty price tag. Day passes can cost anywhere from Dhs450 per person to Dhs14,000 for a duplex pool villa.
So, we packed our blingiest bikinis for a day of tan-topping, cocktail-sipping, and star-spotting. After all, this is Dubai, who doesn’t love a bit of glitz and glam?
To set the, rather spectacular, scene, there’s a floating infinity pool, swimup bar, luxury cabanas, floating sun loungers,
and central lounge area. It should be impossible to miss the magnificent lotusshaped bar, the flower-inspired crystal chandeliers, and the metallic head-shaped DJ booth, yet here all eyes point in one direction: the breathtaking panoramic views over the Palm Jumeirah and Arabian Gulf – a view which few others can claim to rival.
It’s a place to see and be seen yet nothing feels more private and peaceful than a day spent in one of the 11 luxury cabanas with private plunge pools. Complete with jetsetter-like luxuries, the huge cabanas feature a private bathroom with a motion sensor heated toilet seat; a chic lounge room; airconditioning; your own music system; and a bottle of Champagne.
After taking a dip in the dreamy rooftop pool, we order some cocktails and bites. The Mediterranean menu, conjured up by chef Serhat Meci, proves poolside dining can be just as tasty and high-end as restaurant quality. And the service is equally as impressive. Efficient yet unobtrusive, the staff seem to know what
you want before you know yourself (you’ll never see an empty glass).
Kick off with the Gillardeau oysters (Dhs330 for 6) and the zesty Hokkaido scallop carpaccio (Dhs145), beautifully paired with sea urchin, fresh orange, and radish.
For those who prefer meat, order the steak tartare (Dhs165) topped with confit egg yolk, 24-month aged parmesan, and grated truffle and devoured on toasted crusty bread. But whatever you do, don’t skip the ‘Cloud 22 French Toast’ (Dhs135), bite-sized toasted brioche topped with taramasalata, Oscietra caviar, and finished with gold. I’m aware how obnoxiously ‘Dubai’ this sounds but it was just so good.
The vibe of Cloud 22 is (pleasantly) more subdued that expected but, despite getting a little louder in the afternoon, but the house playlist does start to become a little repetitive. That’s not to say there’s no vibe, Cloud 22 has a personality of its own and the perfect option for those seeking a pool day that combines relaxation with the buzz of a beach club.

Even a seasoned Dubai resident can’t help but marvel at the Burj Al Arab. Its sail-shaped still-shiny-white façade rising from the Arabian Gulf is one of those bucket list Dubai sights you simply can’t help but be blown away by. And few frame it better than Cala Vista, the newest addition to the Jumeirah dining portfolio located at Jumeirah Mina A’Salam.

It’s the latter where we find ourselves on a chilly Saturday afternoon, picking out a table on the expansive terrace that best offers those aforementioned postcard-perfect Burj views. Although truthfully, there’s no bad seat in the house. It’s all outdoors, but there are split levels that create different areas:
the bar and lounge are set just up from the pool, the majority of the restaurant dining space gazes towards the Burj and beach, then there’s another raised dining area, covered by a canopy, where most guests are sheltering from the unpredictable February weather. But we layer ourselves in pashminas and stick to our guns on the edge of the terrace.
This isn’t toes-inthe-sand kind of dining. Instead, it feels like dining in a marvellous Italian garden, surrounded by lemon and olive trees, the floor tiled with geometric blue and white prints. To fully embrace La Dolce Vita theme, we order a refreshing Limoncello Spritz (Dhs85), that’s zesty and light, a homemade limoncello muddled with elderflower and prosecco, and slurp down a half dozen Gillardeau oysters (Dhs245), spiking each with a classic shallot vinaigrette.
The menu isn’t extensive, but there’s still plenty to choose from. The fritto misto (Dhs95) features lightly battered prawns, calamari and strings of carrot and potato, that adds welcome crunch, served with a rich and creamy mayonnaise. The crudo di ricciola (Dhs80) is prettily plated, but the pieces of yellowtail are a bit chunkier than the thin slices we expect, and the tomato coulis does little for the flavour.
For mains, we keep it simple with a bowl of linguine alle vongole (Dhs120), with a solid ratio of clams to linguine ribbons, but lacking the seasoning to take this from good to great. The picante pizza (Dhs125) is a signature that fares much better; the dough is light and airy, the fior di latte has a creaminess to it we love, and the pieces of spicy salami pack a punch.
Dessert gets a theatrical upgrade when we order the lemon sorbet (Dhs65) which is served inside a fresh lemon, and constructed tableside with shavings of lemon cream that come from what look to be pebbles. We dive in with two spoons and finish it with gusto.

I’m the kind of person who tends to associate songs to places, people and things. There is, inside my head, a mental jukebox of theme songs that strike up as soon as I walk into a particular venue or see that specific person. As I strolled into Papas, the first track that popped into my head was the cover of On An Evening in Roma, by Patrizio Buanne. An instant mood boosting track that makes you feel as though you’re floating around the cobble stones of a busy Roman piazza. So please feel free to pause reading this and hit play on the track before you continue – just to experience
the full vibe. Chandeliers twinkle and the yellow, orange and pink hues around the venue replicate an Amalfi sunset.
Already obscured by the buildings, Dubai’s sinking sun is splashing its own pastel paintjob over the panorama, and the Marina views from the terrace are stunning. It’s an enchanting scene, but I’m roused from date night reverie by the arrival of the starters. Scallop gratin (Dhs95) is served. In full candor, I was apprehensive of the scallops, not for any particular reason – they just aren’t ranked very highly on my personal hierarchy of edible mollusks. However, the lemon and parsley breadcrumb the scallops are topped with, added a nice, flavourful crunch, enjoyed alongside the tartness of the sundried tomatoes. It was my favourite dish of the night (at least it was, until I tried the cannoli).
For me, one of the marks of a good Italian restaurant is the pizza, which is why it’s the classic margherita (Dhs70) that steps up to the plate, rather than trying any of the fancier options. The tomato base enjoys a well-pitched acidity level, though is a little too sweet for our palate, and benefits significantly from Papa’s liberal basil sprinkling policy. I felt an instant swell of love for the cannoli (Dhs60) – it might be one sided but for once, this is a one-sided kind of love I am perfectly content with. With a smooth and creamy ricotta filling, light pistachio flavouring, and notes of caramel and dark chocolate, it was all box ticking. The richness of the dark chocolate cannoli took me by surprise in the best possible way and the crunch of the cannoli was excellent.

man that always gives us big golden retriever energy, R&B artist Khalid full name (Khalid Donnel Robinson) will be making his way to Dubai for the one-night-only performance of his postponed gig at the Coca-Cola Arena, now taking place on Friday, March 8. The American singer-songwriter made waves with his breakout hit, Location, which dropped in 2016 when, incredibly, he was just 19-years-old. Clearly not destined to end up Young, Dumb and Broke, his appropriately-titled, Grammynominated debut album American Teen hit shelves (real and virtual) the following year. From in an interview with Redbull recorded around the time of the record’s release we know the then teenage sensation’s favourite tracks from that first LP are 8TEEN, Angels, and Saved.
The artist chalks-up some of the maturity that drove his youthful success to the worldly education of his formative years. With a mother and a grandfather in the military, Khalid found himself moving around a lot,
including a six-year stay in Germany. Travel famously “broadens the mind’ but for some, it also seems to lay down some heavy inspirational backing tracks.
It’s been a minute since the release of his second and most recent studio album (Free Spirit in 2019), which has left his global legion of fans eagerly awaiting the release of a new self-penned Khalid compilation. The third album, with a TBC release date, reportedly has the working title of Everything is Changing.
In the interim and beyond his tour dates, there have been other sorts audio files for his audiophiles to bop to, including a mixtape called ‘Scenic Drive’; and a huge collection of collaborations with the likes of Billie Eilish, Marshmello, Benny Blanco and Halsey, and Ed Sheeran, as well as other huge names in the industry. The hitmaker has amassed countless award nominations including Billboard Music Awards, MTV VMA, iHeartRadio Awards, and Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. And has gone on to win over 20 awards in the short eight years of his musical career.

You’d have been given galactically long odds on Dune: Part Two being a stinker. Sure, it is a sequel and they are traditionally tricky customers, but with the six-Oscar wins and box office blitz of the opening entry, the almost universally praised performance of its cast, the saga being led by a director who is widely regarded as one of the modern greats – and the fact that this follow up is taken from the same source material as the first... Dune: Part Two had the implied dynastic security of a royal heirdom.
But it still would have been a brave soul insisting ahead of time, that this sequel would dramatically improve upon the first. And yet here we stand, at the ornate gates of a science fiction masterpiece. With the run time-consuming chores of backstory building and character establishing swept into the sands of Arrakis, director Denis Villeneuve has two hours and 46 minutes to burrow, giant-worm-like, into the spiceladen narrative dunes of Frank Herbert’s opus.
There’s space to go deep and lock swords with musings of prophecy and destiny, revenge and freedom, colonialism, hegemony, and rebellion. There are, if you choose to see them, religious overtures and many
discernable references to Middle Eastern culture (look at the language). And on a more intimate level, we are invited to grapple with the frailties of love, familial favouritism, harmony with nature, utilitarianism ad absurdum, and faith relationships with pariah messiahs. And it’s all set against the haunting beauty of a wild desert planet, much of it filmed right here, amongst Liwa’s own shifting sandscape.
This movie begins where the last one left us: following the almost-wholesale decimation of his family, our protagonist Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), has found sanctuary with the marginalised indigenous population of Arrakian ‘Fremen’. The more time Paul spends with his hosts, the more he seems to fit the Messianic mould of their prophesied liberator, Lisan al Gaib. At least for a certain contingent of them.
The prophecy, whether Paul truly believes in it or not, provides him an opportunity to exact revenge on the Harkonnens, who so nearly extinguished his entire bloodline. And should he choose to use the prophecy for his own selfish ends, his ultimate goal would mean the incidental fulfilment of the prophecy. Freedom, and the vanquishing of tyranny.
I was in the rare and extremely fortunate position of being able to share, what I took out of the movie with its director. I asked Denis whether his own beliefs around “free will, flavoured the movie’s dealing with prophecy and destiny”. Because those were the subjects playing on my mind long after the credits rolled. His answer suggested a focus shift.
“If you look at the movie, you can absolutely view it from a scientific point of view where you can explain almost everything. It was important for me that it’s more about characters struggling with the impact of colonialism than anything else”.
Colonialism in the desert. For those watching in this region and beyond, it’ll be almost impossible not to draw certain parallels with what’s going on in a galaxy not so far far away.
Villeneuve is often praised for his grandscale cinematography, but this movie demonstrates his skill at manipulating the other end of the spectrum too. In literature, it’s relatively straightforward to communicate the inner workings of a character to an audience. You can just spell out their thoughts, right there on the paper, which may of course be contrary to
what they say, and the way they behave. It’s difficult to replicate in cinema without it emerging as contrived. Instead, filmmakers and actors have to rely on subtle facial gestures, conversations with confidants and the vacuum of inaction.
Credit must go to Timothée Chalamet for this too, he puts down a (what seems unfair, at 28, to say) career-defining performance. Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and Dave Bautista all contribute magnificently, but it’s an unrecognisable Austin Butler who steals the support crown with his layered portrayal of a nepobaby sociopath. Multiple Oscar nominations are once again all but assured.
Speaking to Brolin, I asked him which of his huge scenes he was most concerned about getting right. He responded with “you never really know which ones you’re going to be nervous about. You think you’re gonna be nervous
about the battle scenes, and then you end up doing it, and you just want to be in the right condition. There was a scene that I did with Timothy in the cave. And I got super nervous before it. But it’s what excites you about acting because it just happens. You’re motivated by the fear. You want to get on a helicopter and leave. But there’s no helicopter. And then finally, once you settle into the scene, you go, wow, there’s something really special about this. But you’d never know when it’s coming.”
I asked Dave Bautista what aspects he enjoyed most about working in science fiction. He replied: “I just look forward to interesting layered characters. I never really set out to be a sci fi star. I’m always pursuing working with great directors and great actors. That’s how I measure my success. I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of some great franchises.”

In a stirring display of solidarity, Zawyeh Gallery in Alserkal Avenue has unveiled its latest group exhibition, Posters for Gaza. This compelling showcase features the works of 26 talented Palestinian and Arab artists, each contributing their unique voice to shed light on the ongoing atrocities in the Gaza Strip.
The heart of the exhibition beats with an impassioned call for a cease-fire and the recognition of the fundamental rights of Palestinians to live freely. What makes this exhibition particularly poignant is that four of the participating artists hail from Gaza, lending an even more personal and heartfelt dimension to their creations.
Uniformly sized and designed in a simplified manner, the posters reflect uniqueness in terms of style, materials, and the underlying narratives. Steering away from the digital norm, participating artists poured their effort into producing those posters, utilising a variety of materials, including acrylics, inks, charcoal, collage, and mixed media.
Tapping into the posters’ subjects, the themes vary, yet all the artists call for humanity to prevail. Themes that address human rights violations in Gaza, are evident in the works All Rights Not Reserved by Hosni Radwan and We Are Doing Fine in Gaza… What About You? by Khaled El Haber. Gazan artist Mohammed Joha encapsulates anxiety and worries towards his family living in Gaza in his poster Sleepless, and the heavy weight of grief and melancholy also manifests in Gazan artist Hazem Harb’s poster. A nod to history, the exhibition revives a longstanding tradition in Palestinian activism. Political posters, a potent form of expression, were prolifically produced during the ‘70s and ‘80s by the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, drawing contributions from Palestinian, Arab, and international artists. These visual narratives played a pivotal role in garnering global support for the justice of the Palestinian cause, championing values of freedom, dignity, resilience, and the unyielding pursuit of independence.

There are 32 known species of sharks present in the Arabian Gulf. This includes some of the most infamous species such as bull sharks and tiger sharks (ed: two of the three species most commonly involved in unprovoked attacks globally). There are healthy populations of various shark species in the Arabian Gulf, however interactions between sharks and people are extremely rare in this environment.
Do any of these species often visit the shallow areas along the coastline?
The sharks of the Arabian Gulf will adjust their habits depending on the season. For a lot of the year the shallow water is very hot and with high salinity, during these times most shark species will remain deep. In the Arabian Gulf the most abundant food sources for sharks are not on the coastal beaches and this is why we almost never see them. The sharks tend to be offshore in channels, around islands and on the sea grass flats.
What are the species that have been reportedly spotted recently near the coast in the UAE?
Recently we have seen reports of lemon sharks, bull sharks and some small requiem sharks gathering in schools, almost certainly due to food interest and breeding activity. For example, recent sightings of small schooling sharks under a bridge at Palm Jumeriah could be explained by the lighting under the bridge attracting zooplankton, which attracts squid, which attracts sharks. Regardless of the reason, there are no sharks taking any interest in humans here and this is why the record of negative incidents between sharks and people in the UAE is near zero.
The Arabian Gulf is a very high-nutrient environment, and this is why the water is cloudy. In comparison the Red Sea is low in nutrients and that is why the water is so
now able to see how sharks behave around unaware swimmers and surfers. It is really incredible how little attention a shark pays towards a human. In fact, what we mostly see is avoidance behaviour by the shark, taking the longer route around people out of fear of us. I don’t want to give other animals a bad rep, but certainly bears, hippos, crocodiles and many other creatures would be more likely to react aggressively to the sight of a human than sharks.
Can you tell us about any of the conservation projects currently underway in the UAE and what can people do to help support them?
Save Our Seas specialises in shark conservation here and around the world. It’s a great platform (saveourseas.com). Sharks in general are in crisis with many species on the verge of population collapse.

clear and this can change the way sharks behave. Sharks in the Arabian Gulf have abundant food sources and these food sources are typically offshore, away from people.
Should we be afraid of sharks?
After the incident in Egypt (ed: a fatal tiger shark attack in June, 2023) this region has certainly been more sensitive to the shark topic. It was a tragedy, however, at the same time it was also very much an isolated incident. There is a long list of statistics we can use to help people understand how unlikely a shark attack is, but I think the general public in 2024 do understand the important role sharks play in our oceans and the slim chance one would have for an encounter. For me personally I love to see sharks, I was recently diving with 5m Tiger Sharks in the Indian Ocean, and it was one of the most awe-inspiring moments of my life. We do not know what the knock-on effect would exactly be if we lose sharks in our oceans, but we expect it would affect many other loved species and world food sources through fisheries. The UAE is lucky to have sharks with us and what is most important is we learn how to keep them around.
What are your top three shark facts?
1. Sharks sink…if they are not swimming, they will fall to the sea floor.
2. A shark’s huge liver is the reason they can go long lengths of time without food. It’s like having two giant batteries onboard.
3. Sharks are fish, the only difference is that their skeletons are made of cartilage and not solid bone. That’s why they move in such a fast and effortless way.

How do you advise working out during Ramadan, considering the sudden change in diet and rest patterns?
It depends on your usual training schedule and intensity. Working out during Ramadan is not bad, but it is not the time to try anything new or too intense. Drop the intensity down, listen to your body but some gentle exercise will be good for you and for your mood during this time.
Is it possible to make progress during Ramadan, or is it more a question of
maintaining your healthy habits despite the change in lifestyle?
Realistically, it’s not going to be the best month to improve strength and fitness while your eating and sleeping pattern is so different. But that’s not to say you should put your goals on hold. Find ways to adapt your workouts to stay on track without pushing your body too hard. Focus on maintaining healthy habits so that you don’t feel like you take 10 steps back. My advice is to reduce the intensity and/or duration of your usual

training schedule but don’t stop completely. It is also a good time to sub in a light walk or something like a Pilates class where you might usually be doing something more high energy.
Do you advise easing back into your regular routine after Ramadan, or can you go straight back to normal with your calorie intake and sleep schedule? After fasting, you must give your body time to adjust back into your usual schedule. Listen to your body and be kind to yourself. You may lose a little strength or cardio fitness but just getting your consistency back with your higher energy levels and muscle memory… it won’t take long! Depending on how much you reduce your training will depend on how quickly you build it back up but remember: quality over quantity here, focus on getting in a few high quality sessions in per week when getting back into it, and just build up from there.
What would be three tips do you have for those working out while fasting?
1. Keep moving, drop the intensity and if you need to pull back slightly that’s ok. As I’ve said, the main thing is to listen to your body.
2. Appreciate what your body CAN do. Be positive and try and do the things you enjoy to keep you on track.
3. Always let your trainer know if you are fasting. We are there to support you in any way we can so if we know you are fasting we can help you get the most out of the workouts you are doing.

Laura Coughlin travels to Oman’s southernmost province to experience Salalah outside of its famous Khareef season, and finds it better, and more beautiful, than ever
Plenty of guidebooks wax poetic about summertime in Salalah. Temperatures dip, the rain clouds loom and there’s a magical mist in the air. It’s a hugely popular time, when visitors fly – or drive – down from nearby countries to embrace the cooler, fresher climate while the rest of the GCC roils in the heat of summer. I’ve done it myself and revelled in the uniqueness of a misty and damp August.
But there’s more to this sub-tropical spot than its mystical monsoons. The winter months – November to March –are drier in Salalah and are technically considered the off-season for tourism. I kind of love that post-Khareef exhale when the tourists leave and hotel prices drop. In fact, it’s pretty close to perfect, whether sunbathing on secluded beaches, wading through crystal-clear rockpools, or picnicking by serene waterfalls, Salalah unveils its best without the rain or the ruckus.
During Khareef, the ocean waves are high, the currents dangerously strong and it’s generally prohibited to swim in the sea. Not so in winter. During the off-season, visitors are encouraged to take the plunge into the calmer seas. The ocean is marine-rich, too, making it a wonderful location for dolphin-spotting, snorkelling and scuba diving.
There’s an element of luck involved in seeing the cascading waterfalls of Salalah, and depends solely on the level of rainfall in the area during Khareef. But, if you are lucky – and you visit Wadi Darbat in the wake of monsoon season (around December to March) – you might just see the stunning waterfalls in full flow amid the green valleys.
In summer, you’d have to share the wadis and rock pools with hordes of visiting families. In winter, it’ll be you and a handful of other intrepid explorers able to enjoy the aquamarine waters in peace.
As UAE residents you’ll have seen your fair share of camels: in the desert; strolling beside a quiet road; or galloping at the racetrack. But never swimming. In Salalah’s Wadi Darbat, you’re bound to spot a camel or two making a beeline for the cool waters for a drink or to cross over to reach new pastures. It’s a surreal sight.

as Al Khaimah (RAK) has always been known as the ‘outdoorsy one’ of the seven emirates. A proud ambassador for the ‘North Face jacket and carabiner clip’ crowd. Its flavour – ‘hydration salts and... the taste of adventure’. It’s a reputation justly earned, RAK is of course home to the country’s highest peak – Jebel Jais, its chief UAE USPs include such pioneer pursuits as record-breaking zip-lines, wadi hikes, a via ferrata, a mountainside toboggan ride, survivalist camp, rockface abseiling and rugged off-roading routes.
But it is also an emirate that’s trekking through the foothills of some monumental change. Ramadan is likely to begin on March 11 (depending on the sighting of the crescent moon), with Eid al-Fitr celebrations expected to commence on April 9. Even if you’re not personally observing Ramadan, it’s still important to be respectful towards those who are.
Here’s what you need to know...
What is Ramadan?
The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is a time when Muslims around the world abstain from eating, drinking or smoking between sunrise and sunset.
Lasting about a month, it marks the time when the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Extra tarawih prayers are performed at the mosque throughout Ramadan and each evening 1/30th of the holy book is recited. By the end of Ramadan, observers will have read the entire Qur’an.
Why is Ramadan so important to Muslims?
Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, considered mandatory by believers. The pillars are the framework by which Muslims everywhere
live, and Ramadan is considered the holiest time in the Islamic calendar. It is a time for prayer, reflection and religious devotion, to cleanse past sins and to focus on Allah through good deeds.
Why do Muslims fast?
Fasting, or sawn, loosely translates as ‘to refrain’. So during Ramadan Muslims commit to not eating, drinking or smoking during daylight hours. But sawn isn’t just about physical restraint, it also refers to bad thoughts, actions and words.
Ramadan is often a time to spend with family, breaking fast at sunset. The fast itself is intended to help Muslims learn about selfdiscipline and enable them to empathise with those who have less.
Must everyone fast?
For Muslims, everyone is required to fast, but there are exceptions. Young children, pregnant women and the elderly and infirm are not required to fast due to possible health complications. Women on their monthly cycle do not fast, nor do people who are ill. If there is a temporary break in the fast, Muslims are required to make up the missed days after Ramadan. Non-Muslims are not required to fast. However, they should behave sensitively throughout Ramadan, and be consierate of those around them who may be fasting during the Holy Month.
Does everything close during the day?
Restaurants largely remain
open during Ramadan, but may change their opening times, so it’s best to call ahead at the venue. Everything tends to happen much later in the day during Ramadan. Malls stay open later than usual. Do I need to do anything differently during the day?
It’s important for everyone to dress and behave appropriately during the Holy Month. Even those who aren’t fasting should make sure that their clothes are modest, covering shoulders, chest and knees. Keep music levels down to a minimum and, of course, no public displays of affection.
